<a href="https://www.ckmhc.org/">Central Kansas Mental Health</a> Center (CKMHC) offering a Mental Health First Aid training in Lincoln on Friday, November 10.

Mental Health First Aid is a course that teaches you how to identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illnesses and substance use disorders. The training gives you the skills you need to reach out and provide initial help and support to someone who may be developing a mental health or substance use problem or experiencing a crisis.

No previous experience is necessary; Mental Health First Aiders are anyone who wants to make their community healthier, happier and safer for all.&nbsp;

As a First Aider, you can be the first line of support for youth experiencing a challenge or crisis. Taylor Haws, Community Based Services Coordinator, is one of five certified MHFA instructors at CKMHC.

 “I feel lucky to be a contributor in our area for MHFA awareness and training to help community members recognize risk factors and warning signs for mental health and addiction concerns,” she said. “My hope is to increase community members’ confidence in supporting others in finding appropriate mental health support when it is needed.”

Participants will receive MHFA certification. Lunch, snacks, and all materials will be provided.

Lee Brice to perform at Stiefel in February

Cloud County Community College has received a $50,000 grant from the Earl Bane Foundation. These funds represent an award received by CCCC’s Foundation, and will be used for construction of the college’s Technical Education and Innovation Center. The new facility will provide modern access to quality education in critical need, high-demand careers in Kansas.

“We are grateful for this gift from the Earl Bane Foundation toward our Technical Education &amp; Innovation Center,” said CCCC President Amber Knoettgen. “These funds will be used&nbsp;for&nbsp;equipment that will provide the best educational opportunity for our students.”

The approximately 35,000 square foot Center will house Renewable Energy, which includes Wind and Solar Energy and Drones; Nursing and Allied Health, which also offers high-demand career education for EMT, CNA, CMA, Home Health Aide, and IV Therapy; and Agriculture and Industrial Technology, including welding and CDL training.&nbsp;

Cloud County is in the late stages of fundraising for the Tech Center, and naming opportunities for additional donors are still available.

CCCC receives $50,000 grant from Earl Bane Foundation

On Monday a Salina man was arrested after he allegedly threatened to "cut up" a 16-year-old family member with a knife.&nbsp;

Just after 6 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 6 Salina Police officers responded to a 911 call placed by a 16-year-old reporting a domestic incident in the 1000 block of N. Fifth Street.

Salina Police Sergeant Kyle Tonniges told Salina Post this morning that when officers arrived at the scene they located the 911 caller and his mother who witnessed the argument and alleged threat. 

According to an SPD report, 49-year-old Salina resident&nbsp;Manford Jackson made threats during an argument with his 16-year-old family member.

"They [victims] were involved in arguing with him. At this point he [Manford] pulled out a knife which was described as a five to six-inch knife with a fixed blade knife. He pulled this knife out and threatened the 16 year old said he was going to cut his body up," Tonniges said.&nbsp;

Tonniges said the 911 call was made after Manford issued a threat using a knife.

While officers arrested Manford, they discovered a marijuana pipe which led to additional requested charges.&nbsp;

"We arrested him for aggravated assault and criminal threat and he had a marijuana pipe in his pocket so he was also charged with possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia," Tonniges said.&nbsp;

Bennington State Bank Treasury Officer Debra Adams Honored with 2023 Leadership Kansas Award

&nbsp;Two challenges in retail businesses are anticipating demand and understanding consumers’ buying preferences. To help define customer preferences, many business owners turn to client surveys to guide their decision-making.

With respect to consumers’ directives for beef producers, Kansas State University agricultural economists recently surveyed people across the country to see what is of the greatest importance to them in making decisions about buying retail beef.

“The four factors that consumers consistently rank at the top are product freshness, price, flavor and safety,” K-State ag economist Ted Schroeder said on a recent Cattle Chat podcast. “Consumers just expect that the beef they purchase will have these qualities.”

Having a consistent demand for beef aligns with the industry’s goal of economic sustainability, said Phillip Lancaster, K-State beef cattle nutritionist and sustainability expert for the university’s Beef Cattle Institute.

“From a beef industry perspective, we categorize sustainability in three pillars — economic, social and environmental,” Lancaster said.

He defined economic sustainability as profitability at the ranch level, while social sustainability relates to the public’s perception of how beef producers care for the animals. Environmental sustainability encompasses soil health, water quality and greenhouse gas emissions. 

“From a beef production standpoint, consumers rank animal welfare of greater importance when making purchasing decisions, over greenhouse gas concerns,” Schroeder said.

He added that it is important to remember that not all consumers rank their priorities the same way.

“Consumers are heterogeneous, meaning niche markets are present for even low-rank product attributes,” Schroeder said.

He also said that policymakers need to be cognizant of the costs associated with additional regulations relating to beef cattle production.

“We want to produce beef that is profitable, environmentally friendly, and socially acceptable, and those are all good things. But we have to be careful about imposing regulations on the industry to meet certain criteria because that will add cost, and we know that price is one of the biggest factors that drives consumer beef purchases,” Schroeder said.

KSRE Cattle Chat: Consumer priorites for beef production

After a successful first year,&nbsp;<a href="http://salina.ksu.edu/">Kansas State University Salina Aerospace and Technology Campus</a>&nbsp;is extending its relationship with&nbsp;<a href="https://www.greatplainsmfg.com/scholars">Great Plains Manufacturing</a>&nbsp;and continuing the Great Plains Scholars Program. The campus will host two no-cost virtual information nights for interested students on Tuesday, Nov. 13, and Monday, Jan. 22, 2024.

The Great Plains Scholars Program is a one-of-a-kind scholarship where students can earn a bachelor's degree in one of K-State Salina's engineering technology degrees while also working part-time for Great Plains Manufacturing in Salina. This is the second year that the campus and manufacturing leader have teamed up with current K-State Salina students going to school to earn their degrees while working for Great Plains Manufacturing. By completing this program, students will have accumulated over 2,400 hours of relevant, professional manufacturing experience and a bachelor's degree. Students can also take classes year-round thanks to the expedited process of this program and get to their careers faster.

With the success of the Great Plains Scholars Program, K-State Salina is opening the application process for incoming first-year students for the fall 2024 semester. 

To be eligible, the student must select their major in&nbsp;<a href="https://www.salina.k-state.edu/academics/degree-options/electronic-computer-engineering-technology/">electronic and computer engineering technology</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.salina.k-state.edu/academics/degree-options/mechanical-engineering-technology/">mechanical engineering technology</a>&nbsp;or&nbsp;<a href="https://www.salina.k-state.edu/academics/degree-options/robotics-automation/">robotics and automation engineering technology</a>. Students must also have a high school or college GPA of 2.8 or higher.

K-State Salina to host free, online information sessions for Great Plains Scholars

&nbsp;Big Brothers Big Sisters of Salina expands new mentoring programs, Beyond School Walls and Corporate Bigs.

Beyond School Walls is a program aimed at developing the next generation of employees through oneto-one mentoring relationships. The program, which is part of Big Brothers Big Sisters of America’s national initiative, launched as a pilot program in 2022 in partnership with Vortex and Salina Public Schools. This year Big Brothers Big Sisters of Salina is excited to partner with Great Plains Manufacturing, as an additional participant in Beyond School Walls.

Across the globe, about 40% of employers find it difficult to recruit people with the skills they need for their businesses (The Learning Generation: Investing in Education for a Changing World, 2016). Mentoring can be an integral part of the solution in both better preparing youth for high-demand careers and offering employers a means of engaging and retaining their talented staff.

 The program addresses the challenges of preparing youth for post-high school success. Students from local high schools spend time with their mentor, onsite, at the offices of a local business. The students have an opportunity to visit a professional workplace setting, and learn about different career opportunities, from financial literacy to STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics), while developing meaningful relationships with the employee, their mentor.

As a Corporate Big, partnering businesses’ employees (called a ‘Big Brother’ or ‘Big Sister’) are matched one-to-one to a child (called ‘Little Brothers’ or ‘Little Sisters’) from a local elementary school and spend time together, once per week, at school.

Throughout the school year, these Bigs and Littles will spend one-to-one time together during a day that best fits their schedule. It allows Bigs and Littles individualized time and attention on a consistent basis, with the venue being the child’s school.

Matches in the Corporate Bigs program eat lunch together, have fun at recess, assist with school work, or just catch up all while building a positive friendship.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, November 7 and 8, Morgan Brothers Construction of La Crosse, Kansas plans the following changes to City of Salina roads.

The work is included in a $96,000 project, which is part of the City of Salina’s $4.7 million 2023 street maintenance capital improvement program.

Concrete repairs continue in Salina

The courthouse is often daunting; large, stiff rooms with equally rigid chairs lead to a harrowing experience for anyone who enters.

But once Crenshaw, the professional service dog, enters the 28th Judicial District Community Corrections' drug court each Monday, director Michelle Callam said it almost always breaks the tension.

Starting at his new position as Salina's 28th Judicial District's service dog, Crenshaw helps court-goers and other clients find comfort in and around the judicial system.

This summer, shortly after Crenshaw arrived at the 28th Judicial District, he visited Ottawa County Courthouse to meet its staff, where they almost immediately found an opportunity for his assistance.

In a small witness room that day, an 11-year-old girl prepared to give her statement to the courtroom as a survivor of a violent crime.

Crenshaw is trained to sense shifts in mood, and after witnessing the young girl's fear, he stayed with her from the witness room and sat with her as she gave her statement to the judge.

"We deal with people who are on probation for high-level felonies, and a lot of people that are our clients have been through a lot of trauma in their life," Callam said. "When we are meeting with a client, and they're upset about something, an officer will call and ask for Crenshaw to come into the room — it just takes it from a heightened situation and de-escalates it pretty quickly."

Since Crenshaw arrived at the district, Callam said more clients report for their scheduled court dates and probation visits, and the district has experienced an overall improved mood in and around the court system. 

Pre-trial service staff member and Crenshaw's handler Andrew Pellant said he not only helps clients but often helps the staff of the 28th Judicial District.

"Especially working at an office that we work at, whether you're a client or a staff member, it's always nice to have someone like Crenshaw," Pellant said. "Within days, I saw the immediate response was positive — demeanors and attitudes of staff members and the clients."

Pellant said before Crenshaw arrived, the district had some probation clients who had trouble appearing for scheduled visits, but now those clients come in looking for Crenshaw.

About a year ago, Callam said after some staff returned from a court training event, they told her of a drug court service dog in Pennsylvania. This idea acted as the catalyst for the 28th Judicial District.

Late last year, the district applied for a service dog from CARES Inc., a service dog training facility based in Concordia, KS. Crenshaw arrived at the district in June, just over a year old.

On Monday afternoons, Crenshaw visits drug court to help clients through the stress of appearing, and the rest of the week, Crenshaw moves about the district assisting various cases.

Once done with his day at work, Pellant takes him home, and as soon as the service dog vest hits the floor, Crenshaw knows it's time to relax.

"When you take that vest off, he's a different dog. It's like, 'I'm not working anymore,'" Pellant said. "He has several toys that he loves, and we alternate playing fetch with him. He has a sloth that he likes, an alligator and a pig. So he loves the play — he has a rope. He loves to chase his balls that we have and throw them down, and then really, other than that, he likes to nap a lot of the time."

Meet Crenshaw — 28th Judicial District's newest employee

The Salina Police Department responded to a disturbance call at 11:43 a.m. Sunday morning. Neighbors reported 30-year-old Salina resident Corey Born as acting unusual outside his home.

As officers arrived at the scene at the 200 block of North 10th Street, SPD Sergeant Kyle Tonniges said Born was not cooperative.

"He was acting erratic and then started approaching one of the officers attempting to grab his handgun — he continuously attempted to grab the gun," Tonniges said. "So the officers ended up fighting with him a little bit and had to take him down to the ground."

Tonniges said officers assumed he might be under the influence of drugs or alcohol, so they took him to the Salina Regional Health Center, but screenings showed him as clear.

During the arrest, officers found a small amount of marijuana in his pocket, totaling the requested charges to —

● Criminal Threat ● Battery of a law enforcement officer ● Assualt of a law enforcement officer ● Interference with a law enforcement officer ● Possession of marijuana

According to a press release emailed by Saline County on Monday, Oct. 2, the previous press release emailed on Friday, Sept. 29, communicating that&nbsp;the vote&nbsp;from the Tuesday, Sept. 26&nbsp;<a href="https://salinapost.com/posts/e32e40b5-4b02-4bc7-9579-c992774d9cdd">Saline County Planning and Zoning meeting to deny CUP23-103&nbsp;as&nbsp;invalid</a>, is no longer accurate.&nbsp;

﻿A battery-based electric storage and distribution facility proposed by Mountain Peak Energy Storage, LLC (Plus Power) has been officially denied.&nbsp;The Saline County Planning and Zoning Commission met September 26 to discuss a the facility. The proposed site is located on approximately 40 acres at the southwest corner of McReynolds Road and Simpson Road.

A previous release regarding this issue deemed the application approved; however, after consulting with legal counsel, it was determined that the Planning and Zoning Commission bylaws supersede state statutes. Therefore, the application is denied.

According to the bylaws, four votes are needed to approve a motion in a meeting where six of the nine members of the Commission are present.&nbsp;

The commission voted on approving the facility with three in favor, two against, and one abstention - the Commission deemed the motion failed due to the abstention; unfortunately, this was in error. The motion to approve the application was denied due to the lack of a fourth in favor of approval.
