On Monday, April 8, a total solar eclipse will cross North America. The Kansas Department of Transportation and the Kansas Highway Patrol advise travelers to plan ahead as traffic is expected to increase.

“Remember that the shoulders of highways and interstates are for emergencies only,” said KHP Capt. Candice Breshears. “Finding a safe and secure location to view the eclipse is a must for all travelers to make it to their destinations safely.”

Travelers should be patient, avoid distractions and practice safe driving habits.

“Pay attention to the roadway, not the sky,” said KDOT Director of Safety Troy Whitworth. “Be on the lookout for other drivers who may be distracted. Traffic will most likely be heavy before, during and after the event in the locations where the eclipse can be viewed. So, plan your travel accordingly.”

Kansas is not in the direct viewing area of the total solar eclipse. It will begin in Mexico and enter the U.S. in Texas, and parts of 14 additional states will experience the total solar eclipse as it travels northeast across the country. Then it will enter Canada.

According to the National Weather Service, a total solar eclipse occurs when the moon’s elliptical orbit is towards its minimum distance from Earth, making the moon appear larger than the sun. This allows the moon to completely obscure the sun, and a shadow is cast on the Earth’s surface.

Use specialized eye protection to view the sun during this time. Check the weather and plan accordingly – make sure to dress properly and be prepared for potential weather incidents when driving long distances. Salina Post proudly presents Flashback Friday in partnership with the&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.smokyhillmuseum.org/">Smoky Hill Museum</a>. Enjoy a weekly tidbit of local history from the staff at Salina Post and the Smoky Hill Museum as we present "Salina-Flashback Fridays."

As Salinans began filling Santa Fe Avenue with businesses and shops at the turn of the Century, Lon Smith and his son, Rush Smith, moved to town to purchase the Phillip Young Undertaking business.

Once the father-son duo purchased the business at 131 N. Santa Fe Avenue in May 1906, it began a long history of growth and change for the century-old funeral home.

In 1909, the business moved to the T.W. Roach Building at 141 to 143 S. Santa Fe Avenue, which today houses Apron Strings [LINK], and combined with a furniture store. 

For about seven years, the Smiths continued the undertaking business alongside selling furniture until they purchased land at the corner of Ninth Street and Iron Avenue and began building the Lon Smith and Son Funeral Directors business.

Just over a year later, the father-son pair moved into the building, and it became one of the first funeral homes exclusively built for embalming and funeral services.

Rush and Lon Smith also provided a new service to Salina residents — motorized hearses that replaced the ordinary horse-drawn carriages of the time.

In 1918, Rush Smith purchased the business from his father and continued the business as Rush Smith Funeral Home. According to the Smoky Hill Museum, Lon Smith operated their furniture business until the Smith family sold it to the Gebhardt and Jilka Furniture Company.

In 1936, James Geisendorf moved to Salina from Sedgwick County after graduating from the Williams Institute of Embalming and Mortuary Science for his first job at Rush Smith Funeral Home in Salina.

According to an article by Gordon Fieldler from the Salina Journal in April 2012, provided by the Smoky Hill Museum, Geisendorf began working for $12 a week and continued until he moved to Independence a few years later but moved back in 1945 with his wife, Marjorie Geisendorf.

Once Geisendorf returned to Salina, he continued his career at the Rush Smith Funeral Home for 14 years. On July 1, 1959, more than 40 years after taking over the business from his father, Rush Smith sold his funeral home to Geisendorf.

After the purchase, Geisendorf became a staple in the community.

In that April 13, 2012, Salina Journal article, many said they knew Geisendorf as more than a funeral home director but a local historian documenting Salina's history throughout the 20th Century.

Lisa Upshaw, the curator of collections and research at the Smoky Hill Museum in 2013, recalled that Geisendorf helped her with her early career and educated her on the town's history.

"He was so kind," Upshaw said in the article. "He took the time to drive me around town and show me all the historical spots."

Not only did Geisendorf help document Salina's growth from a "Depression-era flour milling town of 14,000 into a regional trade center of more than 40,000," he also focused on the history of funeral homes and embalming practices.

This turned Geisendorf into a celebrated business in the region, which he operated until he retired on Jan. 1, 1986, and sold the funeral home to long-time employees Roger and Tedi Brent. 

By 1997, the Brents sold the funeral home to Carriage Services in Houston, Texas, who owned the business until November 2002, when Mike and Helen Carlson purchased Geisendorf Funeral Home.

According to the Smoky Hill Museum, the funeral home moved from its historic location at 401 W. Iron Avenue to a state-of-the-art location at 500 S. Ohio Street, complete with an on-site crematory.

 </figure>In 1936, James Geisendorf moved to Salina from Sedgwick County after graduating from the Williams Institute of Embalming and Mortuary Science for his first job at Rush Smith Funeral Home in Salina.According to an article by Gordon Fieldler from the Salina Journal in April 2012, provided by the Smoky Hill Museum, Geisendorf began working for $12 a week and continued until he moved to Independence a few years later but moved back in 1945 with his wife, Marjorie Geisendorf.Once Geisendorf returned to Salina, he continued his career at the Rush Smith Funeral Home for 14 years. "He took the time to drive me around town and show me all the historical spots."Not only did Geisendorf help document Salina's growth from a "Depression-era flour milling town of 14,000 into a regional trade center of more than 40,000," he also focused on the history of funeral homes and embalming practices.This turned Geisendorf into a celebrated business in the region, which he operated until he retired on Jan. 1, 1986, and sold the funeral home to long-time employees Roger and Tedi Brent. <figure>

The spine of the central plains will likely see a line of fast-moving storms move through tomorrow, with broken-up storms beginning in the mid to late afternoon.

Before any lightning flashes, though, most Kansans will experience sustained winds at 35 to 40 mph, with gusts that could reach almost 60 mph. 

"The biggest concern that we're looking at as far as widespread is the strong gusty winds," said National Weather Service Wichita Meteorologist Bryan Baerg. "It's going to be a real thin line of thunderstorms, so maybe at any given location, you'll have storms for about 15 minutes to half an hour tomorrow, so it's not a long-duration storm event by any means." 

Storms will likely begin firing off between 5 and 7 p.m., with most developing from regions of central Nebraska to south-central Kansas. Baerg said the storms will move at a blistering pace, around 50 to 60 mph, moving to the northeast.

The main concern with this weekend's system will be the straight-line winds blowing through the state. Although Baerg said it would be a robust system, cyclonic activity or tornadoes are unlikely due to the gusty surface-level winds.

"The atmosphere just has so much wind in it that when you get a storm that comes over it, it could try to mix down those winds, but shoot, even without the storms, we're going to be dealing with nearly severe-caliber winds of near 60 mph anyways," Baerg said.

The strong winds will continue through Sunday. Baerg said they will switch directions and have sustained speeds of 25 to 30 mph, with gusts reaching near 50 mph throughout the morning.

Yesterday, many ranchers and landowners had a productive day for controlled burns across north central Kansas, with many in the southern portion of the state seeing smoky skies for miles.

Although many remained controlled, one planned burn in east Saline County a few miles north of Kipp eventually got out of hand around 12:30 p.m., requiring Saline County Rural Fire District Five (RFD #5) to respond to the blaze.

"It was a good day to burn. The problem with this burn was that the person who started it did it on the wrong side — so he started with the wind instead of against it," said RFD #5 Chief David Turner. "So the wind just kind of pushed it from there."

A landowner began the then-controlled burn about half a mile north of East Crawford Street near South Whitmore Road in a rural portion of the county. It then burned south, pushed by the northern winds.

Turner said eight RFD #5 units responded to the fire and quickly subdued it about an hour later. During the grass fire event, the flames did not damage buildings, people or livestock.

On Monday, March 25, at about 8:30 p.m., a male subject entered Dollar General, 2000 S. Ninth Street B in Salina, and purchased several items. 

The subject paid with a $100 bill and received over $80 in change.

The subject then went to Gambino’s Pizza, 2000 S. 9th A, and ordered a pizza. The subject paid with a $100 bill and received over $75 back in change. The subject went and sat in a dark-colored SUV but left the area before the pizza was ready.

It was later discovered both bills were counterfeit and had the same serial number.

Counterfeit $100 bills in Salina is this week's Crimestoppers

Salina Police Department Officers are investigating the theft of multiple guns from two different residences in Salina.&nbsp;

A 61-year-old Salina woman told police yesterday that she recently discovered someone stole a Ruger SR9 handgun from her home, Salina Police Capt. James Feldman said this morning. The gun was valued at $500.

The victim told officers she let two individuals stay with her in April 2023. Feldman said these two individuals are being considered suspects.&nbsp;

According to the victim, another unknown suspect stole two more firearms she stored at a friend's home in the 100 block of South Third Street.

She stored a Ruger 57 and a Ruger Carbine at the friend's house, who told the victim last month someone had stolen the guns.

"In November 2023 she had taken two guns to a friend's house," Feldman said. "She noticed last month they were missing. She stated she had shown them [guns] to a friend and then the person who lives at the house stated he later saw the friend running out of the house with both guns."
