Poet and author Camille Dungy will join the University of Kansas for a virtual conversation at 3:30 p.m. Feb. 20 as part of the ongoing series inspired by contributors to the book “All We Can Save: Truth, Courage, and Solutions for the Climate Crisis.”

Dungy, professor, gardener and author of the 2023 collection “Soil: The Story of a Black Mother’s Garden,” will join Megan Kaminski, professor of English and environmental studies, and Imani Wadud, doctoral candidate in American studies, for the series, led by The Commons at KU.&nbsp;<a href="https://bit.ly/DungyKU">Register to attend on Zoom</a>.

The “All We Can Save” series centers climate justice and draws from knowledge across and beyond fields of academic research. Contributors to the book “All We Can Save,” edited by Ayana Elizabeth Johnson and Katharine K. Wilkinson, share from their own experiences and work to inspire collective agency around the urgency of climate. This series highlights activists, scholars, thinkers and others whose life work generates and speaks to ideas for action, survival and nourishment.

“Camille&nbsp;Dungy’s&nbsp;ground-breaking book&nbsp;‘Soil: The Story of a Black Mother’s Garden’&nbsp;celebrates the connections and joy found through growing and tending to her garden and in caring for the natural world,” Kaminski said. “By tracing the roots of her own environmental stewardship through family, literary predecessors and community, she centers the relationship between the peoples of the African diaspora to the land on which they live and invites us all to consider our ongoing relations with and within our own ecosystems.”

Dungy also is the author of four collections of poetry and the 2017 essay collection “Guidebook to Relative Strangers: Journeys into Race, Motherhood and History.” Dungy has also edited anthologies including “Black Nature: Four Centuries of African American Nature Poetry.” A 2019 Guggenheim Fellow, she has received NEA fellowships in poetry (2003) and prose (2018), an American Book Award, two NAACP Image Award nominations and two Hurston/Wright Legacy Award nominations. She is University Distinguished Professor at Colorado State University.

This series is led by The Commons with support from the Environmental Studies Program, the Hall Center for the Humanities, the KU departments of African &amp; African-American Studies, English, Geography &amp; Atmospheric Science, and Geology; the History of Black Writing; the Emily Taylor Center for Women &amp; Gender Equity; the Office of Multicultural Affairs and the University Honors Program.

Camille Dungy will join KU for climate conversation series

On Feb. 18, 2001, auto racing star Dale Earnhardt Sr. died in a crash at the Daytona 500; he was 49.

In 1885, Mark Twain’s “Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” was published in the U.S. for the first time (after being published in Britain and Canada).

In 1970, the “Chicago Seven” defendants were found not guilty of conspiring to incite riots at the 1968 Democratic national convention; five were convicted of violating the Anti-Riot Act of 1968 (those convictions were later reversed).

In 1983, 13 people were shot to death at a gambling club in Seattle’s Chinatown in what became known as the Wah Mee Massacre. (Two men were convicted of the killings and were sentenced to life in prison; a third was found guilty of robbery and assault.)

In 1984, Italy and the Vatican signed an accord under which Roman Catholicism ceased to be the state religion of Italy.

In 1988, Anthony M. Kennedy was sworn in as an associate justice of the U.S. Supreme Court.

Rod Blagojevich for political corruption</a>; Blagojevich left prison hours later and returned home to Chicago. Saline County Jail Bookings, Feb. 18

Admit it: the thought of speaking in front of an audience makes your palms sweaty, maybe even your knees buckle.

Beth Hinshaw, a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kansas4-h.org/">Kansas 4-H</a>&nbsp;youth development specialist, knows that the nerves do not necessarily go away as we get older, but speaking in public does get easier.

“Honestly, it is all about learning how to organize information and deliver it,” she said. “Young people may have a lot of it written out the first time they give a presentation, but as they grow in that skill, they will get to where they are using an outline.”

Beginning in February and throughout March, youth are honing their public speaking skills across the state during Kansas 4-H Days. Hinshaw said the annual events challenge youth to tell about or demonstrate a 4-H project they are working on in front of a judge, who then provides feedback.

“In 4-H, we think of these skills as necessary for college and career,” Hinshaw said. “Youth learn to organize thoughts in a logical manner; find information and research a subject; express ideas clearly and convincingly; prepare visuals to support the presentation; and accept feedback.”

<a href="https://www.ksre.k-state.edu/about/statewide-locations/">Local extension units</a>&nbsp;host Kansas 4-H Days for youth ages 7 to 18. “If you have friends or family who are doing presentations, there’s a good possibility that there is a video somewhere that they could share with you,” Hinshaw said.

Most talks are given individually, though a few are demonstrations by teams of youth. Some youth also give illustrated talks, while others give talks that persuade, inform, entertain or inspire, according to Hinshaw.

“A lot of people will tell us they would not have had the communication skills and abilities (later in life) that they have if not for their 4-H background,” Hinshaw said.

“Ultimately, the goal in any presentation experience is for members to complete the presentation with a good feeling about themselves and what they have accomplished and learned.”

Communication is one of nearly&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kansas4-h.org/projects/">three dozen project areas</a>&nbsp;offered by the Kansas 4-H program. More information about the state’s largest youth organization also is available at its&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kansas4-h.org/">website</a>.

Kansas 4-H Club Days help youth build communication skills

On Valentine's Day morning, an unknown suspect allegedly attempted to steal cash from the Dragon's Ascent strategy game at Sunset Billiards.

Salina Police Department officers received a notification at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 14, the Sunset Billiards security system alerted a break-in at the business.

"When we were responding to the alarm, we were told by the bar owners to disregard," said SPD Lt. Kyle Tonniges. "They didn't need a police response; evidently, they decided to check on it themselves."

Tonniges said at 9:17 a.m., Sunset staff called SPD and reported a burglary at the bar. A suspect forced entry into the back door and, once inside, attempted to pry open two Dragon's Ascent gaming machines.

Dragon's Ascent, A Game of Skill and Strategy, is an arcade-like game that provides cash prizes for its players.

Sunset Billiards staff emptied the games the night before, so the suspect caused $400 in damage to the machines and about $1,200 by breaking the glass door to enter the business.

"There is video surveillance from inside the store, and we're reviewing that and trying to identify who this suspect was," Tonniges said. "We classified it as burglary or damage to property — it was pretty evident that they were attempting to commit a theft."

Kyle Tonniges. "They didn't need a police response; evidently, they decided to check on it themselves."Tonniges said at 9:17 a.m., Sunset staff called SPD and reported a burglary at the bar. A suspect forced entry into the back door and, once inside, attempted to pry open two Dragon's Ascent gaming machines.Dragon's Ascent, A Game of Skill and Strategy, is an arcade-like game that provides cash prizes for its players.Sunset Billiards staff emptied the games the night before, so the suspect caused $400 in damage to the machines and about $1,200 by breaking the glass door to enter the business."There is video surveillance from inside the store, and we're reviewing that and trying to identify who this suspect was," Tonniges said. Salina Post proudly presents Flashback Friday in partnership with the&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.smokyhillmuseum.org/">Smoky Hill Museum</a>. Enjoy a weekly tidbit of local history from the staff at Salina Post and the Smoky Hill Museum as we present "Salina-Flashback Fridays."

Downtown Salina was booming with commerce in the late 1800s, and it quickly became an attractive location for businesses to set up shop in the grand storefronts on Santa Fe Avenue.

One entrepreneur, Louis Rosenwald, sought after Salina to open a clothing store, and in 1900, he had his chance to join Charles Benjamin to open The Hub.

Benjamin worked for the Ober Clothing Company from 1898 until the store moved from 100-02 S. Santa Fe Avenue.&nbsp;

When Ober moved, Rosenwald and Benjamin took the opportunity to claim a spot on the popular downtown strip.

According to the Smoky Hill Museum, The Hub opened its doors with "great fanfare" on Saturday, Aug. 25, 1900, offering Salinans a "full line of clothing, hats, furnishings and shoes for men and boys."

The Hub joined businesses like Sietz Drug Store, Salina Mercantile Co., Stevenson Clothing Company and <a href="https://salinapost.com/posts/91c0feca-0d5d-4b3c-bad0-50c923780047">The Salina Candy Company</a>, providing a range of merchandise for residents and visitors.

Rosenwald and Benjamin aimed to set themselves apart from the competing downtown mercantile, so they appealed to residents with affordable prices and a money-back program on merchandise.

With the prime location on the corner of Iron and Santa Fe avenues, The Hub advertised with the slogan, "When in Salina, visit Louis and Ben!" and began offering accessories like hats and jewelry.

According to the Smoky Hill Museum, The Hub continued operation until around 1922, with new businesses taking over the storefront to continue local Salina commerce.

910KINA Saturday Morning Show lineup

On Monday, February 19, the City of Salina will collect waste as normal.

The Salina Municipal Solid Waste Landfill will have standard hours from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The Salina Household Hazardous Waste Facility, Salina Drive-thru Recycling Center and general services office will be closed in observance of the Presidents Day holiday. 

Standard hours of operation for The Salina Household Hazardous Wste Facility will resume Tuesday, February 20. Normal hours for the Salina Drive-thru Recycling Center will resume on Wednesday, February 21.

Standard hours of operation for The Salina Household Hazardous Wste Facility will resume Tuesday, February 20. City of Salina announces general services schedule for Presidents Day

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Kansas First District Congressman Tracey Mann explained his vote on the impeachment of Alejandro Mayorkas, Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security. He voted in favor of sending the articles over to the Senate. The vote was 214-213.

"It baffles me a little bit that it was so close," Mann said. "To me, it's an easy decision. The Constitution gives the House of Representatives the sole power of impeachment. It states that civil officers of the U.S. can be impeached for treason, bribery or other high crimes and misdemeanors. When you look at Secretary Mayorkas, what's happening with the southern border, his willful decisions not to comply with our nation's immigration laws, breaching the public trust of the Congress and the American people, it's unfortunate that it's to this point. Something must be done, though."

The Senate is set to take up the impeachment trial on Feb. 26.

"Since Biden came into office, we've had 8.3 million folks come into the country illegally," Mann said. "Today, there are at least a dozen things the President could do that would not completely solve the problem, but we would see the numbers plummet."

Mann gave some examples of action the administration could take.

"The Border Patrol tells us that if the President would just reinstate remain in Mexico and also end catch and release, they think that illegal immigration would drop overnight by as much as 70%," Mann said. "That's something the President should have done two years ago and could do today."

The Remain in Mexico policy, when it was in force, required migrants seeking asylum to remain in Mexico until their US immigration court date.

SALINE COUNTY —&nbsp;One person was injured in an accident just after 9:30 a.m. Friday in Saline County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2021 Hyundai Santa Fe driven by Marilyn A.&nbsp;&nbsp;Canole, 61, Abilene, was westbound on Interstate 70 at Ohio Street making a lane change. 

Due to winter weather road conditions, Canole lost control of the Hyundai. The SUV spun out and struck a 2021 International semi driven by&nbsp; Gary A. Garrow, 54, Lenexa.

EMS transported&nbsp;Canole to Heartland Health Care Clinic. Garrow was not injured. Both drivers were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

The items stolen included antique coins, silver coins, different currency bills totaling over $6,000, and prescription medication. The total loss is estimated in excess of $11,000.00.

Salina Police Officers responded to an arson-related dispute at a local motel earlier this week after they received a call from a man whose pants were set on fire while he was wearing them.&nbsp;

At 10 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 15, SPD officers reported to 453 South Broadway Blvd. and spoke with a 48-year-old male victim, from Salina. Officers learned that a 38-year-old Salina woman, identified as Kelsey Hathaway, set fire to the victim's jeans shortly before officers arrived.

"She [Hathaway] was sitting on the floor next to him and she lit his pants on fire," Feldman said. "We think she uesd a lighter and his pants were on fire for about 30 seconds."

The male victim was not injured as a result of the fire and did not require medical treatment.&nbsp;

Feldman said Hathaway was taken into custody, and transported to Salina Regional Health Center to be checked out.&nbsp;

"While at the hospital, Hathaway got upset at a 23-year-old nurse and spit on the nurse hitting her in the face and upper body," Feldman said.&nbsp;

Feldman said both parties told officers that they had been drinking alcohol before the incident occurred.&nbsp;

Hathaway's requested charges include aggravated arson and battery.&nbsp;

Salina woman arrested after allegedly lighting a man's pants on fire

“Under construction, and over the top” was the theme for the 2024 Salina Art Center Gala held Feb. 3, 2024 at The Venue in Salina, KS. This year's fundraising event raised $79,341, smashing the goals set for this year's event.

“It’s hard to beat art and fun with friends all in the same evening, but that is exactly what we did with the Hammers and Heels Gala this year,” said gala committee chairperson, Sydney Soderberg. “It is a fun way to keep art alive in Salina.”

The gala took a fashionable look at construction. Nine artists and fashion designers created unique designs that walked the runway on gala night. The designs were created entirely from construction materials. Artists used guttering, electrical wire, duct work, sandpaper, fencing, drains, plumbing materials, concrete, and more.

Ultimately, Salina Artist Connie Burket was awarded a $1,000 prize. The community chose the winner by voting with their donations to Salina Art Center before and at the gala event.

“Donors, sponsors, and guests for this event boosted Salina Art Center’s community programs while supporting individual artists who deeply appreciate the acknowledgment of their chosen work.&nbsp; This was a perfect representation of the SAC mission.&nbsp; The lighthearted theme, complex creative challenge, and demanding fabrication process gave the artists themselves an all-at-the-same-time chance to have fun, do good, and execute well—what’s not to like in that combination?” Burket.

Burket’s winning dress and other runway event pieces will be displayed at the Salina Art Center to celebrate their reopening on May 23, 2024.

The Art Center's Annual Gala fundraiser supports engaging and innovative programming for everyone. Nearly 3,000 children and adults attended classes, workshops, and special programs annually through Salina Art Center and Warehouse Education Studio, and 8,497 people saw a film at the Art Center Cinema.

“Art viewing, making, and conversation is a necessary building block to personal health and mental wellness,” said Misty Serene, executive director at the Art Center. “Brains crave creativity and thrive when exposed to it. Creativity is an economic driver. Not only training the next generation workforce to be problem solvers but also as a profitable tool for tourism, talent recruitment, and real estate sales. After all, we all want to grow, live, and retire in a community with a vibrant cultural life.”

The Art Center is fortunate to have volunteers serve in multiple capacities throughout the year. The Gala committee consists of community leaders and Art Center patrons. 

In addition to the fashion show, this year’s gala included a catered dinner by Yaya’s Euro Bistro, William Cole wine, an open bar, and a live auction of six unique experiences and items you can only find at the Art Center Gala. Following the gala dinner, guests danced the night away with DJ Carbon at the Hutton After Party.

'Hammers and Heels,' local artist takes home grand prize at Salina Art Center Annual Gala   

Since 1912, the historical limestone building located at 126 N. Douglas in Ellsworth has served as a community cornerstone, providing a rich history of banking, attorneys, advisors, philanthropists, community leaders, and innovators.

The law firm of Sherman, Hoffman &amp; Miller regrettably announces the closure of the office and a transitional plan to assist clients leading to the anticipated final closing date of June 15, 2024. 

The announcement comes after a series of mitigating circumstances, including the departure of Melissa Miller for a new opportunity, the retirement of long-standing partner Greg Hoffman, and the impending retirement of John Sherman, after practicing law for 48 years in the community.

“We are incredibly saddened that the firm of Sherman, Hoffman &amp; Miller LC will no longer be able to serve our clients and our communities. I am looking forward to retirement but will miss the practice, and the friendships made throughout the years. It has been an immense blessing to serve this community,” said attorney John Sherman.

 Although efforts have been ongoing to recruit new attorneys to the area to provide continuity, those efforts have been unsuccessful, as attracting young attorneys to rural communities has becoming increasingly challenging for a variety of reasons.

It is anticipated that the building and physical assets of the firm will be sold. The firm of Sherman, Hoffman &amp; Miller has roots dating back to the 1870s when Ira Lloyd first came to Ellsworth to begin his law practice. The firm still has many historical law books which belonged to Mr. Lloyd. After over a century and half of service to the community and its clientele, the transition comes with regret and the understanding that clients may desire assistance in obtaining final work, and transitioning to a new law firm. 

The firm is asking that clients pick up their original documents and any desired files from the office prior to March 15, 2024. 

Files or documents can be obtained by contacting the office at 785-472-3186. Old files will be destroyed after March 15. Clients are asked to act quickly to request those files and to exercise patience, as limited staff are available to assist.
