The Kansas Highway Patrol continues to see more drivers traveling well above the posted speed limit.

On Thursday,&nbsp; KHP Lieutenant Craig Davis had an encounter with a 2011 BMW on Interstate 70, checking its speed at 151 mph,&nbsp;76 mph over the speed limit, according to a social media report from the KHP.

As Lieutenant Davis moved to intercept, the BMW continued its high-speed journey until the Salina Police Department intervened, stopping it for going 94 mph near the city limits.

Since February 8, the KHP has recorded a number of others driving far over the speed limit, as shown in a social media report by KHP Trooper Tod Heilman.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported two traffic stops for 100-plus miles per hour within 6 miles in the same afternoon, and both vehicles had children in the car, according to a social media report Monday.

The resulting fine for Lieutenant Davis's efforts on Thursday alone amounted to $993, not including the second ticket from Salina Police.

Salina Area United Way is excited to announce that the organization has received a substantial donation of $75,000 from Salina Regional Health Foundation to the <a href="https://www.unitedwaysalina.org/early-childcare-initiative-fund">Early Childcare Initiative Fund</a>.

The donation will help sponsor 15 local childcare teachers and ensure that they not only earn a living wage but also help keep our centers fully staffed, which will open more childcare slots.

According to a Salina Area United Way statement, the donation is a huge and crucial step towards making strong and lasting steps in combating childcare issues and shortages due to the workforce in Saline County. Salina Regional Health Foundation is the seventh business/organization to donate towards the fund.

“We can’t thank Salina Regional Health Foundation enough for their commitment and support to the Saline County community and for helping further the childcare needs here,” said Salina Area United Way Executive Director, Claire Ludes. “This is a great stride forward in momentum on our mission to combat the childcare shortage that we are currently facing in Saline County by working to secure and retain a workforce to care for our local children.”

In April of 2023, Salina Area United Way announced the start and opening of the Early Childcare Initiative Fund at their organization. Through this fund, local centers will be able to apply on an annual basis for wage supplement grants, to bring assistant teachers to $15/hr. and lead teachers to $18/hr. 

Currently, nearly all childcare centers in Saline County, except for one, are paying $4 less than the wages listed above.

Salina Area United Way hopes that the Salina Regional Health Foundation, as well as the other six businesses that have donated to the fund, will continue to encourage and spark other local businesses and organizations in the community to make a donation to the Early Childhood Initiative Fund and see the impact it can make on the workforce and recruitment and retention of workers.

Salina Area United Way accepts sizeable donation from local health foundation

Many people receive Valentine’s Day gifts from loved ones, especially roses, but they decline shortly after Feb. 14. Kansas State University horticulture expert, Cynthia Domenghini offers guidelines to extend the life of floral arrangements and loose stems.

“For floral arrangements, keep the vase filled or floral foam soaked with warm water,” Domenghini said. “Add fresh, warm water daily and if the water turns cloudy, replace it immediately.”

Domenghini suggests recutting loose stems every time water is replaced by removing 1-2 inches with a sharp knife, under water to allow the stem to draw water instead of air.

“Keep flowers in a cool spot (65 to 72 degrees Fahrenheit), away from direct sunlight, heating or cooling vents, directly under ceiling fans, or near radiators,” Domenghini said.

For loose stems, begin by filling a clean, deep vase with water and add the flower food obtained from your florist.

“Remove leaves that will be below the waterline. Leaves in water will promote bacterial growth,” Domenghini said, “Stems should be cut immediately before putting them in water.”

If you cannot get flowers in a food solution right away, keep them cool, Domenghini added.

Domenghini and her colleagues in K-State's Department of Horticulture and Natural Resources produce a weekly&nbsp;<a href="https://hnr.k-state.edu/extension/horticulture-resource-center/horticulture-newsletter/">Horticulture Newsletter</a>&nbsp;with tips for maintaining home landscapes and gardens. Tips to extend the life of Valentine’s Day roses

The Kansas Highway Patrol has arrested a suspect connected to a vehicle crash that killed a Salina woman last year.&nbsp;

According to online booking records, 21-year-old Abygail Emalee Aaron of Wichita was booked into the Saline County Jail just after 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Requested charges for Aaron include second-degree murder, driving under the influence, improper driving on the laned roadway, and driving on the left side of the roadway.

On February 15, of 2023, The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2000 Toyota Tundra driven by Aaron was southbound on Interstate 135 just south of Water Well Road at approximately 1 a.m.

The pickup crossed the center median and struck a 2016 Ford F150 driven by Jose M.&nbsp;Rodriguez, 41, Salina, on the shoulder of the northbound lanes.

EMS transported Rodriguez and a passenger in the Ford identified as Daisha J. Endsley, 26, Salina, to Salina Regional Health Center where Endsley was pronounced deceased.&nbsp; EMS also transported&nbsp;Aaron to Wesley Medical Center.&nbsp; 

Aaron remains jailed. Online booking records do not list a bond for her.

Driver arrested for alleged DUI crash that killed Salina woman last year

Salina Family YMCA will host its inaugural <a href="http://salinaymcatriathlon.itsyourrace.com">Sprint Triathlon</a> on Sunday, April 14.

All funds raised by this event support the Salina YMCA Strong Kids Campaign, which makes it possible for children in the Salina community to participate in youth and childcare programs that might otherwise be out of reach for their families.

“The YMCA’s Strong Kids Campaign provides direct financial support to youth in our community so they can participate in programs that build character and teach skills for life,” said Chris Lehecka, Salina Family YMCA Associate Executive Director. “Strong Kids gives our community’s children a chance to play in youth sports, take swim lessons and receive quality afterschool care.”

The triathlon is open to individuals and teams alike. The adult division (for ages 18 and up) includes a 300-meter pool swim, 6-mile indoor bike on Precor® Spin bikes and 2-mile outdoor run. The youth division (for ages 8-17) includes a 150-meter pool swim, 3-mile indoor bike on Precor® Spin bikes, and 1-mile outdoor run. Awards will be given for the top three male and female finishers in both the adult and youth categories.

“Events that bring people together are fun for everyone involved,” said Lehecka. “As a spectator who is cheering on a friend or family member, a volunteer who provides much needed encouragement, or a participant who is challenging themselves, everyone is bringing their own inspiration and energy, bottled up in to a few hours of excitement.”

Just before 4:30 p.m. Wednesday,&nbsp;police learned a student enrolled at Lakewood Middle School had allegedly posted on social media that he was going to "shoot up the school" due to being suspended from school for a school-related issue, according to a media release from Salina Police. 

School resource officers confirmed the information with the school and observed the victim, and witness's social media information corroborating the initial report.

Just before 8 p.m. officers contacted the student, took them into custody and made an arrest on a requested charge of criminal threat. The juvenile is being transferred to the Saline County Sheriff's office and juvenile intake and assessment&nbsp; with a recommendation of detention at the north Central Kansas Regional Juvenile Detention Facility in Junction City.

Spring often greets Kansas yearly with powerful storms, sending meteorologists on the road while residents take shelter indoors.&nbsp;

Many Kansans become accustomed to severe weather, but at Storm Fury on the Plains, National Weather Service meteorologists Robb Lawson and Kevin Darmofal reminded residents of how dangerous severe weather can be.

"You need to take it seriously; that's what we try to impart to people, especially here," Darmofal said. "It never happens to you until it does, and when it does, it's very tragic."

Storm Fury on the Plains held its first seminar this year at Kansas Wesleyan University Peters Science Hall, beginning a string of 25 different presentation locations across the state.

Lawson opened the presentation on Tuesday, Feb. 6, with varying storm structures, from squall line storms to photogenic supercells.

Squall lines are long lines of storms that often host dangerous wind gusts and hail, while supercells are isolated, rotating storms that regularly produce tornadoes and downpours of rain and hail.

In the presentation, Lawson pointed out various parts of a supercell and how to gauge its severity based on visual information and radar scanning.

As many residents and seasoned storm spotters listened in the audience, one attendee sat eager to learn more about something that scared him.

Rachael Walker and her 6-year-old son, Jaxson Walker, attended the presentation to learn more about storm safety and some new information about powerful storms.

Jaxson Walker once feared storms, but in recent years, he's learned more about severe weather, and now, according to Rachael Walker, it's become a significant interest in his life and something he strives to learn about.

"Especially when we have that fear, I feel like knowledge is power," Rachael Walker said. "I feel like that helps a lot with not being as fearful and just learning about stuff."

Once Jaxson learned more about severe weather, Rachael Walker said he grew confident about protecting himself during a storm and what to look for in the future.

When a powerful storm hits, Rachael Walker said she and her family enjoy taking quick looks out the window to view the squall, and once it's safe, they often venture out to look for rainbows.

Rachael Walker homeschools Jaxson and his two sisters, so teaching about storm safety became essential in the at-home classroom.

Storm Fury on the Plains only reinforced Rachael Walker's teachings at home, with Darmofal stating that knowing about powerful storms leads to safer decisions while looking for safety.

"Know what to do, have a plan, and have that plan in advance, not waiting until the last minute, then you have multiple ways to receive weather information and warnings," Darmofal said. "Those are probably going to keep people safe."

An essential factor that weaved through the presentation for experienced storm chasers and residents was keeping two or more avenues to receive severe weather information.&nbsp;

Darmofal and Lawson stated the importance of having a weather radio on hand, alongside any other source for information, including a smartphone, another radio, or television.

The Saline County Emergency Management team helped facilitate the presentation in Peters Science Hall. The County Public Information Officer, Melissa McCoy, shared easy ways to remember critical storm safety tips.

"When the thunder roars, get indoors. Turn around, don't drown," McCoy said. "Number one, we want people to be safe."

Storm Fury on the Plains will continue its presentations across the state, teaching storm spotters new information on technologies or reporting techniques while informing everyday citizens on how to stay safe during severe storms.

 Kansas Wesleyan is gearing up to host the third Salina Strings Day Thursday, Feb. 15. The event will be held at 7 p.m. at the Gov. Joan Finney Auditorium at the Kansas Highway Patrol Academy, on the former site of Marymount College. Admission is free.

The concert will showcase string orchestras from Salina Central and Salina South high schools, as well as KWU, the event sponsor. Each will perform a selection or two, then the orchestras will combine for “Academic Festival March,” by Katie O’Hara LaBrie. 

Several of the pieces incorporate folk songs, such as “Danny Boy,” a cakewalk and a dance from Mexico. With the exception of “Danny Boy,” all the selections are by 20th and 21st century composers.

“We’re so happy we can make this a local tradition,” said Dr. Leonardo Rosario, director of the KWU strings program and of the KWU String Orchestra. “It’s a great way to showcase all the musical talent in the community.”

K-State beef cattle experts outline when a calving challenge is a medical emergency

K-State Beef Cattle Institute veterinarians share tips for managing cows with retained placentas as well as those experiencing a rectal, vaginal or uterine prolapse.

When a new little one joins the world, it can be an exciting time, but not all births are easy. For beef cattle, it is important to know what is considered a medical emergency, according to the veterinarians at the Kansas State University Beef Cattle Institute.

Speaking on a recent&nbsp;<a href="https://ksubci.org/2024/02/09/post-calving-cattle-on-feed-calving-season-questions/">Cattle Chat</a>&nbsp;podcast, the veterinarians discussed two calving-related challenges that cows can experience — retained placentas and prolapses.

The placenta nourishes the calf while in the womb. Often after the cow calves, the placenta comes out of her body on its own, said K-State veterinarian Brad White.

“With a cow, the attachment between the placenta and the uterus is like fingers going into little holes, and so it is important to let the cow shed that placenta without pulling on it or there will be little pieces of tissue left behind and that can damage the inside of the uterus,” White said.

A retained placenta is not a medical emergency for a cow, and it is best left alone, said K-State veterinarian Bob Larson.

“It is important to monitor the cow and if she is acting normal the placenta will likely come out on its own within a couple of days,” he said.

Larson added that retained placentas often occur following an abortion, or when the cow has had a difficult birth or cesarian section.

Along with monitoring the placenta, producers also need to monitor cows for prolapses. There are three types to watch for — rectal, vaginal and uterine.

“With a prolapse, the parts that should be on the inside of the body are now on the outside and then have little protection from the elements, so those must get put back in place quickly,” White said.

To help producers recognize which part has come out of the cow, K-State veterinarian Brian Lubbers made this analogy: a rectal prolapse is the size of a softball; a vaginal prolapse is the size of a volleyball; and a uterine prolapse is bigger than a beach ball.

“If it is before calving, it is most likely a rectal or vaginal prolapse, while post-calving it is almost always a uterine prolapse,” Lubbers said.

Larson added: “A uterine prolapse is always a medical emergency and needs to be addressed immediately, while the other two types of prolapses need to be dealt with in a timely manner.”

Depending on what type of prolapse has occurred, producers may choose not to retain the cow in the herd, Larson said.

“There is a genetic component to a vaginal prolapse that is related to the structure around the vagina, while a uterine prolapse is almost always related to a difficult birth,” Larson said.

Salina Police Department officers responded to a domestic disturbance after a concerned acquaintance reported violence they heard over a phone call.

At 12:11 p.m., Monday, Feb. 12, SPD officers reported to the 500 block of West Iron Avenue and spoke with a 35-year-old female victim at her residence with her 48-year-old boyfriend, Torick Patton. 

"In speaking with them, we learned that Torick was refusing to let her leave the residence and pushing her away from the door," said SPD Lt. Kyle Tonniges. "At one point, he also took off his belt, raised it above his head, threatening to strike her."

Tonniges said the victim told officers that two days before the domestic report, Patton had held her down in a bed and began to strangle her.

 </figure>By OLIVIA BERGMEIER Salina PostSalina Police Department officers responded to a domestic disturbance after a concerned acquaintance reported violence they heard over a phone call.At 12:11 p.m., Monday, Feb. 12, SPD officers reported to the 500 block of West Iron Avenue and spoke with a 35-year-old female victim at her residence with her 48-year-old boyfriend, Torick Patton. "In speaking with them, we learned that Torick was refusing to let her leave the residence and pushing her away from the door," said SPD Lt. Kyle Tonniges. "At one point, he also took off his belt, raised it above his head, threatening to strike her."Tonniges said the victim told officers that two days before the domestic report, Patton had held her down in a bed and began to strangle her.Officers reported finding visible evidence of injuries on the victim's neck and decided to arrest Patton with requested charges for aggravated domestic battery, domestic battery, assault and criminal restraint.

Salina man arrested after officers find strangling injuries on victim

Salina Public Schools (SPS) recognized two Horizon Teachers at the February 13 Board of Education meeting. An elementary and a secondary teacher is selected each year for the Horizon Award and recognized for excellence during their first full year of teaching.

Elementary Horizon Award – Camdyn Schreiber, Fourth Grade Teacher

Camdyn teaches fourth grade at Sunset Elementary School. She is known as a highly reflective teacher, continuously striving to strengthen student relationships and enhance their lessons.

At the beginning of the school year, she gave each parent or guardian a card that read, “Handle with Care,” and included her email address and phone number. The parents and guardians were instructed to contact Camdyn if their child needed extra care, for any reason, during the school day. When they emailed or called to let her know of a child’s special need, Camdyn offered caring and compassion to her student. And, she followed up quickly, kindly and professionally after each contact with the adults.

In her classroom, Camdyn uses her students’ interests as a starting point to engage them in discussions. She makes sure to highlight important events in their lives and show that her classroom is a community where all of them experience a sense of belonging.

Camdyn received her bachelor’s degree from Kansas State University. She is currently working towards her master’s degree in Instructional Technology at Fort Hays State University.

Secondary Horizon Award – Josh Rubino, English Teacher

Josh is a second year English Language Arts teacher at Central High School (CHS), where he teaches 10th and 12th grade English.

Peer-teaching, where small groups of students become “experts” in a concept, is often used in Josh’s classes. While teacher lectures and individual work are part of the experience, collaboration is at the heart of his teaching strategies.

“When students are working with others to answer a question, solve a problem, or create something, they are being active learners while practicing valuable interpersonal skills,” explains Josh. He gives them options for learning the course material and prioritizes students discovering things on their own, rather than lecturing.

Josh graduated from the University of Kansas with a bachelor’s degree in English and is currently earning his teaching certification through Fort Hays State University. He is an advocate for the humanities in education, and strives to help students find joy and meaning in reading and writing. In addition to his duties as a teacher, Josh is co-coach of the Mustang Scholar’s Bowl team and sponsor of the CHS Chess Club. Always trying new things, Josh hopes to role-model the pursuit of lifelong learning to his students.

Monday, February 19 through June 30, Centennial Road will be closed between Water Well Road and Arnold for the construction of the Centennial Road Improvement project. T&amp;R Construction of Salina will be removing the roadway and installing a new road, along with a curb and gutter for improved drainage.

Centennial Road will be closed to traffic during the project to help expedite construction. Traffic will be detoured to Scanlan Avenue with properties along Centennial Road having access via Vortex Avenue and Wall Street.

The Centennial Road Improvement project has been designed to improve vehicle, bicycle and pedestrian traffic between Water Well Road and the south city limits located near the water tower. The project will include the reconstruction of Centennial Road to handle future traffic loads with new 16-foot lanes and incorporated bike lanes, curb and gutter, the reconstruction of intersections at Vortex Ave and Wall Street, a 10-foot multiuse trail along the east side and a 5-foot sidewalk on the west side for pedestrian access.
