By SALINA POST A Salina man was taken into custody Thursday following a standoff at Candlewood Suites that involved threats, property damage, and a confrontation with Salina Police Department officers.

According to Salina Police Captain James Feldman, officers responded to a report at 10 a.m. of a man attempting to force entry into Goodwill at 2640 Planet Avenue. The suspect, identified as Chase Mann, was reportedly using a knife to pry open the front door while yelling at employees, demanding clothing. Police said there was no damage to the door.

When officers arrived, Mann allegedly pulled a pocketknife and pointed it at an officer. After being given verbal commands, Mann fled the scene. An officer deployed a taser, but it was ineffective. &nbsp;Mann then entered Candlewood Suites, 2650 Planet Avenue, where police said he threatened employees and entered a room that was being cleaned by three workers.

Feldman said the workers, all females from Saline County, fled room after Mann allegedly threatened them with the knife. Inside the room, Mann reportedly caused more than $1,500 in damage by stabbing the walls and furniture.

Officers secured the room and attempted to negotiate with Mann, but he refused to surrender. Salina SWAT was deployed to assist. After negotiations failed, SWAT officers opened an exterior window and observed Mann lying on the bed. Verbal commands were issued, but Mann did not comply. Officers then used a less-lethal rubber projectile, which prompted Mann to surrender.

Mann was taken into custody at 11:58 a.m. and transported to a hospital for evaluation. He was later booked into the Saline County Jail on multiple charges, including aggravated burglary, aggravated assault, criminal threat, and felony damage to property.

No injuries were reported during the incident.

Upon review of the surveillance video, it was determined the subject had also stolen a lighter.

Casey’s General Store incident is this week’s Crimestoppers

The Kansas Commodity Classic returns on Friday, January 31, 2025, at the Hilton Garden Inn in Salina, bringing together Kansas farmers and industry leaders for a day of valuable information and networking.

The Kansas Commodity Classic is the annual convention of the Kansas corn, grain sorghum, soybean and wheat associations. The event is free to attend and includes a complimentary breakfast and lunch, but pre-registration is requested.&nbsp;

Emceed by Greg Akagi, agriculture director for WIBW Radio and Kansas Agriculture Network, the event will include perspectives on long-term weather forecasts, market insights, investment in rural communities, the Kansas State Fair, conservation and legislative developments.&nbsp;

“We have a really interesting lineup of speakers this year,” said Shayna DeGroot, Kansas Wheat director of membership and government affairs. “We’re excited to get these speakers and panelists in front of our farmer members and learn from these experts.”&nbsp;

Registration starts at 7:30 a.m. with speakers kicking off at 8:30 a.m. with remarks from Kansas Secretary of Agriculture Mike Beam, followed by meteorologist Chip Redmond, Weather Data Library and Kansas Mesonet manager at Kansas State University, who will share his outlook on the weather for the 2025 growing season.

Ben Brown, an agricultural markets and policy specialist with the University of Missouri’s Food and Agricultural Policy Research Institute, will discuss markets and share his insights into what to expect as the 2025 growing season begins amid changing markets.

Marshall Stewart, executive vice president for external engagement and chief of staff at Kansas State University, and Ernie Minton dean of the College of Agriculture, will brief attendees on K-State’s efforts to bring value to farmers in all 105 Kansas counties.

Justin Cobb, with Kansans for Conservation, will provide an update on their efforts to advocate for legislation supporting conservation funding. Bryan Schulz, general manager at the Kansas State Fair, will deliver a presentation on the fair’s strategic vision, future initiatives and long-term goals.

Members of the Kansas Congressional Delegation have been invited and are expected to address key policy issues affecting Kansas farmers, along with legislative developments in Washington, D.C., and their implications for the agricultural sector.

The day will conclude with an agricultural exports panel, featuring Verity Ulibarri, chairwoman of the U.S. Grains Council; Mike Spier, vice president of overseas operations at U.S. Wheat Associates; and Lance Rezac, chairman of the U.S. Soybean Export Council. Panelists will discuss exports within their respective commodities and answer questions from attendees.

In addition to the main one-day conference, the Kansas Association of Wheat Growers will conduct its annual meeting along with other commodity-specific meetings the day before.

Kansas Commodity Classic back January 31

City of Salina Jacob Wood, Salina’s deputy city manager since April 2019, has been appointed interim city manager following a special meeting of the Salina City Commission on Wednesday evening.

Before coming to Salina, Wood served as assistant city manager for the City of Hays starting in 2015 and was previously the city administrator in Oakley.

Wood will step into the interim role on February 7, taking over for Mike Schrage, who resigned during the December 23 meeting to accept a similar position in Warrensburg, Missouri.&nbsp; Wood will serve as interim city manager until a permanent replacement is selected.

New Program Provides Support For Patients and Survivors Alike

The Salina Family YMCA is excited to announce the launch of the Wellness Warriors Cancer Exercise Program – a free, 12-week program for cancer patients and survivors living in or around the Salina area.&nbsp; Wellness Warriors is designed to support physical and&nbsp;emotional well-being through structured, supportive fitness classes designed to help&nbsp;participants regain strength, improve endurance, enhance flexibility, and maintain balance—all&nbsp;critical components for long-term recovery and quality of life.

“Cancer treatment can take a toll, both physically and emotionally,” said Ellen Hogeland, Salina YMCA Senior Program Director. “Our goal with Wellness Warriors is to create a welcoming environment where patients and survivors alike can rebuild their strength and confidence among others who understand the challenges of their journey. We believe this program can truly make a difference in their lives, and we’re proud to offer it at no cost.”

This program at the Y is made possible through partnerships with Tammy Walker Cancer Center and the Masonic Cancer Alliance. Funding to support the program has been provided by Salina Regional Health Center Foundation and the Kansas Department of Health and Environment.

“Exercise plays a vital role in cancer treatment and recovery by enhancing physical resilience, and managing side effects by supporting mental well-being and preventing or rebuilding muscle loss," said Megan Katt, RDN, LD; Clinical Oncology Dietitian at Tammy Walker Cancer Center. "Wellness Warriors will provide the support and resources that cancer patients and survivors in our community need to take positive steps toward their health in a safe, encouraging setting."

Set to begin on February 3, 2025, Wellness Warriors classes will provide guided exercise sessions led by specially trained staff every Monday and Wednesday from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. This unique program also includes a complimentary three-month YMCA membership for participants, offering them access to resources and a community to empower their recovery and health journey.

Salina YMCA launches free cancer exercise program

<a href="https://kansasreflector.com/author/ghills/"></a>TOPEKA — Two Republican Senate newcomers say the main reason they beat their Democratic incumbent opponents — and the reason behind the expanded Republican supermajorities in the Legislature — was constituents’ concerns about taxes.

Brad Starnes, who will represent Riley County, is the first Republican to win the seat since 2008. Jeff Klemp, who will represent Wyandotte and Leavenworth counties, won his election by 31 votes — the smallest margin this election season. The two talked about their campaigns and the upcoming legislative session on the Kansas Reflector podcast.

“People are hurting. It’s evident when you go to doorsteps. The No. 1 concern is the amount of taxations,” Starnes said.

Both senators-elect are set to be on the tax committee, and they predict property tax relief will be a Day 1 priority.

Klemp credits Democratic incumbent Sen. Jeff Pittman’s voting record on taxes as a reason for his loss. Klemp referenced how Pittman voted to uphold&nbsp;<a href="https://kansasreflector.com/2024/05/09/gov-laura-kelly-affirms-plan-to-veto-bipartisan-2-3-billion-five-year-tax-reform-bill/">Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly’s veto on a bipartisan $2.3 billion five-year tax cut plan</a>, which Kelly vetoed because of concerns that it would harm the state’s financial foundation.

“When you have truly bipartisan legislation that we know is good for Kansans and we choose to play politics at the expense of Kansans, I think we start making bad decisions,” Klemp said. “Kansans should expect more out of us.”

The governor called a special session in June, where lawmakers, including Pittman, adopted a $2 billion five-year tax cut plan.

Klemp and Starnes said their Democratic opponents also were voting out of alignment with their constituents’ beliefs.

For example, Starnes pointed to Democratic incumbent Sen. Usha Reddi’s vote against the&nbsp;<a href="https://kansasreflector.com/2024/05/10/kansas-governor-vetoes-foreign-threat-land-ownership-bill/">“foreign threat” land ownership bill</a>, which would have restricted “countries of concern” from purchasing real estate within a 100-mile radius of Kansas military installations.

But Starnes said in the district, which has a high number of military members associated with Fort Riley, protections like that are “paramount” to people.

Democrats campaigned to break the Republican supermajorities in both chambers, arguing the imbalance of power harmed the legislative process.&nbsp;<a href="https://kansasreflector.com/2024/11/01/kansas-republican-committees-democratic-governors-pac-spend-big-on-battleground-races/">Kelly ran a $2 million PAC</a>&nbsp;in hopes of electing more Democrats.

Voters instead elected more Republicans in both the House and Senate, expanding GOP ranks beyond the two-thirds threshold needed to override the governor’s vetoes.

Starnes said he doesn’t see this as a concern.

“When we have a much stronger supermajority, that puts more pressure on the entire Legislature — there’s more energy that needs to be on the decisions we make and how we pay for them,” Starnes said.

Kelly has said she will continue to advocate for Medicaid expansion this session, as she has done throughout her administration. Klemp and Starnes both want medical care to be affordable but are wary of expansion. Starnes says improving Medicaid reimbursement rates would be a better solution than expanding eligibility.

<a href="https://kansasreflector.com/2024/09/23/kansas-abortion-rights-activists-breaking-gop-supermajority-at-statehouse-could-safeguard-access/">Abortion-rights activists</a>&nbsp;also warned against a Republican supermajority this year, in fear of further abortion restrictions. Both Klemp and Starnes were endorsed by Kansans for Life, the largest anti-abortion PAC in Kansas.

Klemp says the issue of abortion was “overplayed” this election. Starnes says he knocked on 9,000 doors and had four people bring up abortion. Both said they see abortion as a “decided issue.” They said they want more options for pregnant people before birth and for the adoption process to be less expensive.

Starnes said after talking with the four constituents who were concerned about abortion, two decided to vote for him.

“Personally pro-life, I support giving women more options through things like pregnancy crisis centers, ensuring child support is paid prior to birth,” Starnes said. “I think that’s going to be important in the conversation as we go forward in providing more choices for women.”

Both Klemp and Starnes were endorsed by Kansans for Life, the largest anti-abortion PAC in Kansas.Klemp says the issue of abortion was “overplayed” this election. Starnes says he knocked on 9,000 doors and had four people bring up abortion. Both said they see abortion as a “decided issue.” They said they want more options for pregnant people before birth and for the adoption process to be less expensive.Starnes said after talking with the four constituents who were concerned about abortion, two decided to vote for him.“Personally pro-life, I support giving women more options through things like pregnancy crisis centers, ensuring child support is paid prior to birth,” Starnes said. “I think that’s going to be important in the conversation as we go forward in providing more choices for women.”

Theater lovers and art lovers unite! A beautiful collection of artwork by the talented Art is Ageless® artists from Salina Presbyterian Manor is now on exhibit at Theatre Salina.&nbsp;

The exhibit accompanies the theatre’s main stage production of “Birthday Candles,” a play that runs January 3 – 19.&nbsp;

The exhibit is the brainchild of Meghan Hessman, a local artist and the art curator for the gallery at Theatre Salina, and Lucy Kollhoff, an enthusiastic participant in the Art is Ageless juried competition. Art is Ageless® encourages artists 65 and older to exhibit and/or compete for an opportunity to be featured in the annual calendar. The program started in 1980 as a fundraising tool for PMMA (Presbyterian Manors of Mid-America®).&nbsp;

Meghan and Lucy teamed up with Salina Presbyterian Manor to find artists from the senior living community who wanted to show their work. It all came together on opening night Friday, January 3.&nbsp;

“I thought the staff did a great job hanging and displaying my quilts,” said Martha Oakes, an award-winning quilter and a resident of the Villas at Salina Presbyterian Manor. “I thought it was nice to have the art show coincide with opening night.”&nbsp;

Artist Dean Groves shares this sentiment. “I was very pleased by the way the show turned out. I’m grateful to be included” he said. Groves is a resident at Salina Presbyterian Manor. More than 200 of his paintings are owned by others.&nbsp;

As you wander through the exhibit, you’ll also see works of art from Margie Reed (knitting), Don Schroeder (mixed media), and Lucy Kollhoff (painting). In all, you can view 18 pieces of art from the Art is Ageless competition as well as the 2025 Art is Ageless calendar.&nbsp;

Visitors will also be able to learn about Salina Presbyterian Manor’s fundraising campaign Preserving Legacies, Enriching Lives. The $10-million campaign is more than a renovation – it’s designed to enhance the lifestyles of the residents with beautiful and functional spaces, including a new arts and craft room.&nbsp;

The exhibit runs until January 19, 2025.&nbsp;

Saline County Commissioners formally declared a State of Local Disaster Emergency during today’s board meeting after a record-breaking 13+ inches of snow fell across the county in a single day. Emergency Management Director Michelle Weis presented the resolution following a verbal declaration by Commission Chair Joe Hay, Jr. on January 4.

This declaration allows Saline County to seek state assistance and reimbursement for storm-related expenses, including time, equipment, and repairs.

The declaration remains in effect for seven days unless renewed or terminated earlier by the board.

The American Legion Boys State of Kansas is accepting applications for its 2025 session. The event is set to be held Sunday, June 1, through Saturday, June 7, at Kansas State University in Manhattan. This will be the program’s 33rd consecutive session at KSU and 87th overall.

Traditionally, Kansas Boys State has been for individuals who will complete their junior year of high school in the spring just prior to the start of each session. However, the ALBSK program will again expand the pool of applicants for this year’s session to also include those who will complete their sophomore year of high school this spring.

The American Legion Boys State of Kansas program provides a relevant, interactive, problem-solving experience in leadership and teamwork that develops self-identity, promotes mutual respect and instills civic responsibility to inculcate a sense of individual obligation to community, state and nation. Boys State is a “learning by doing” political exercise that simulates elections, political parties and government at the state, county and local levels, providing opportunities to lead under pressure, showcasing character and working effectively within a team. It’s also an opportunity to gain pride and respect for government, and the price paid by members of the military to preserve democracy.

The cost to attend the Boys State of Kansas program is $375; however, in many instances, sponsors pay the majority of the fees, with the delegate or his family paying $50. Those wishing to attend the 2025 session should visit ksbstate.org to apply. The deadline to apply for the 2025 program is Wednesday, April 30; applications are accepted after that date, but on a space-available basis. In addition, those who register by Friday, Jan. 31, will receive a $50 early-bird discount.

Kansas Boys State attendees are eligible to receive a three-hour course credit (Introduction to Political Science [POLSC 110]) through Kansas State University, as well as earn merit badges to attain the Eagle Scout rank through Boy Scouts of America. Additionally, attendees can apply to win a Samsung American Legion Scholarship. The American Legion Department of Kansas finalist is guaranteed to receive a $1,250 scholarship, with the opportunity to receive up to $10,000 as a national scholar.

Uplifting tunes and exuberant rhythms will abound in this concert of epic proportions. The concert will open with “…the light that breathes…,” a new work by Maestro Segal. “The piece begins with textures and hidden melodies as if searching for the path forward,” said Segal. “[It] ends in a glorious celebration of light and life.”

The principal cellist of The Cleveland Orchestra, Mark Kosower, will then take the stage to perform Friedrich Gulda’s Cello Concerto, a wild and catchy work described by the composer as “jazz, a minuet, rock, a smidgen of polka, and a march.”

On the second half, Tchaikovsky’s monumental and heroic Fifth Symphony paints the ultimate picture of victory over strife. From the lush orchestration to the soaring melodies, you won’t want this concert to end!

Mark Kosower joined The Cleveland Orchestra as principal cello in 2010. Described as “a virtuoso of staggering prowess” by The Plain Dealer, he is a consummate artist, equally known around the world as a recitalist, concerto soloist, and chamber musician.

Did you set a New Year’s resolution this year?

As the calendar flips to a new year, millions resolve to make big changes: eat healthier, exercise regularly, save more money, or spend more time with loved ones. Yet, by mid-February, many struggle to stick to these ambitious goals. Why do resolutions often fail, and how can we make this year different? The answer might lie in the groundbreaking insights from BJ Fogg's book, Tiny Habits: The Small Changes That Change Everything.

Fogg, a behavioral scientist at Stanford University, argues that the key to sustainable change isn’t grand gestures but tiny, manageable actions.

 "The essence of tiny habits," Fogg writes, "is to start small, anchor new behaviors to existing routines, and celebrate even the tiniest victories."

 Many New Year’s resolutions falter because they rely on willpower or unrealistic expectations. For instance, committing to an hour-long workout every morning might seem inspiring at first, but the demands of daily life can make it hard to maintain. Instead, Fogg suggests starting with something so small it feels almost effortless. For example, if you want to get fit, start with one or two push-ups a day.

 These micro-actions bypass the brain’s resistance to change and build momentum over time.

 A cornerstone of Fogg’s method is anchoring—connecting a new habit to an existing routine. For example, if you want to practice mindfulness, you might decide to take three deep breaths each time you sit down at your desk. If you aim to drink more water, place a glass next to your coffee maker and take a sip while your coffee brews.

Anchoring ensures the new habit fits seamlessly into your day. Over time, these small actions snowball into more significant changes.

Yet, by mid-February, many struggle to stick to these ambitious goals. Why do resolutions often fail, and how can we make this year different? The answer might lie in the groundbreaking insights from BJ Fogg's book, Tiny Habits: The Small Changes That Change Everything.Fogg, a behavioral scientist at Stanford University, argues that the key to sustainable change isn’t grand gestures but tiny, manageable actions. "The essence of tiny habits," Fogg writes, "is to start small, anchor new behaviors to existing routines, and celebrate even the tiniest victories."<h2> Why Tiny Habits Work</h2> Many New Year’s resolutions falter because they rely on willpower or unrealistic expectations. For instance, committing to an hour-long workout every morning might seem inspiring at first, but the demands of daily life can make it hard to maintain.
