Master Gardener Garden Tour in Salina on June 8

Combines started rolling in southern Kansas over the past few days after barely getting started last week. Harvest started earlier than normal because the wheat has matured early and farmers are trying to beat upcoming storms.

Overall, yields are better than expected in the area. Although the first quarter of the year was very dry, recent rainfall has helped with grain fill, and this year’s crop is looking to be much better than last year’s dismal crop. Initial reports of test weights are 62 to 63 pounds per bushel, and proteins are averaging 11 to 12 percent.

USDA/NASS estimated the crop at 267.9 million bushels in its May 1 forecast. Their June 1 estimate will be issued next week. Last year’s Kansas wheat harvest resulted in 201.25 million bushels, with abandonment at 29 percent, the highest since 1951.

Wheat crop conditions in Kansas as of June 2 were 34 percent poor to very poor, 32 percent fair and 34 percent good to excellent.&nbsp;Mature was 25%, well ahead of 1% both last year and average.

After a pair of Salina residents left their home in the 600 block of North Seventh Street late Wednesday evening, they returned to find their front door kicked in and multiple personal items stolen.

Salina Police Department (SPD) Capt. James Feldman said at about 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 5, a 45-year-old and a 19-year-old man reported the alleged burglary to SPD officers.

The burglary occurred between approximately 7:15 and eight o'clock. &nbsp;"Taken was a payroll check, a pair of shoes, an Apple iPhone 8, a black backpack and what they described as a lunchbox. Estimating loss at about $250," said Feldman.&nbsp;

Officers investigating the scene determined that the suspect allegedly attempted to break in through the back door but was unsuccessful. The suspect then entered the front door by kicking it.

Feldman said SPD officers continue investigating the crime but have no suspects determined at this time.

"They [the victims] did not list any idea who could have been responsible for the incident," Feldman said.

SPD investigating Wednesday burglary in north Salina

K-State horticulture expert outlines treatment options

Rose rosette virus and rose blackspot have been reported in several Kansas counties, causing signs of stress on many rose plants this spring.

If you are concerned because your garden’s roses are looking a bit stressed right now, you might not be alone.

Kansas State University horticultural expert Cynthia Domenghini said gardeners in several Kansas counties are reporting problems with their roses due to the rosette virus or rose blackspot.

According to Domenghini, the classic symptoms that appear with rose rosette virus include:

⦁‘Witches broom,’ or a clustering of small branches ⦁Branches develop excessive thorns.

⦁Small, deformed, reddish-purple leaves ⦁Certain varieties may develop reddish-purple streaks or blotches on stems and petioles

“Infected plants, including the roots, should be removed and destroyed,” Domenghini said. “Garden tools that come in contact with the plant need to be sterilized to avoid spreading the virus.”

Rose blackspot is a fungal disease that can cause the following symptoms:

⦁ Dark, circular lesions with feathery edges on the top surface of leaves. Domenghini said usually the lower leaves are usually infected first ⦁ Raised, purple spots on young canes

⦁ Yellowing between spots on infected leaves ⦁ Leaf drop

“Prevention is the best approach for controlling blackspot,” said Domenghini, who recommends purchasing resistant rose cultivars.

Mindful gardeners should also consider watering roses with drip irrigation to avoid splashing water on the leaves, and ensure roses are planted in the sun with good air movement.

“Don’t crowd plants together in a planting,” Domenghini said. “Diseased leaves should be removed from the ground, and infected plant parts should be pruned out of the plant.”

For those gardeners who choose to apply fungicide, Domenghini suggests treating the plants on a 10-14 day schedule. Some recommended fungicides include tebuconazole, myclobutanil, triticonazole or chlorothalonil.

“As always, follow all label instructions carefully,” Domenghini said.

How do I get rid of poison ivy growing around my roses?

Individual sensitivity to plant toxins varies; cover arms and legs when handling the plants. When poison ivy plants are growing among desired plants, herbicide treatment may not be ideal due to the risk of overspray and drift. When the soil is wet, use gloves and pull or dig young plants out of the soil.

Large vines can be cut at the base. Treat the remaining stumps with herbicide, including those with the following active ingredients: triclopyr, glyphosate, 2,4-D and dicamba. A second treatment may be necessary. Always follow label instructions.

Two delegates from the 2024 session of the&nbsp;<a href="https://ksbstate.org/" target="_blank">American Legion Boys State of Kansas</a>&nbsp;have been elected by their peers to represent Kansas Boys State as senators at&nbsp;<a href="https://www.legion.org/boysnation/" target="_blank">Boys Nation</a>&nbsp;this summer. The announcement was made this morning during an assembly at Kansas State University in Manhattan.

Alexandro Garcia, a resident of Olathe, Kan., and a senior-to-be at Spring Hill (Kan.) High School, and, Aidan Lessard. , a resident of Leavenworth, Kan., and a senior-to-be at Lansing (Kan.) High School, will attend Boys Nation, Friday, July 19 through Saturday, July 27, at Marymount University in Arlington, Va. Garcia’s brother, Adiel Garcia II, who graduated from Spring Hill High School in May and served as a Kansas Boys State city counselor this year, was one of two Kansas representatives to Boys Nation last year.

Andrew Rodriquez, a resident of Howard, Kan., and a senior-to-be at West Elk High School, and Zheyun “Karl” Shan, a resident of Wichita, Kan., and a senior-to-be at Wichita East High School, were selected as first alternate and second alternate, respectively.

At Boys Nation, Garcia and Lessard will join representatives from each of the 49 Boys State programs across the country (Hawaii does not have a Boys State program) to receive an education on the structure and function&nbsp;of federal&nbsp;government. At the event, each delegate acts as a senator from his Boys State. The young lawmakers caucus at the beginning of the session, then organize into committees and conduct hearings on bills submitted by program delegates. Senators also learn the proper method of handling bills, according to U.S. Senate rules.

Participation in the political process is emphasized throughout the week, including organization of party conventions, and nominating and electing a president and vice president. The week of government training also includes lectures, forums and visits to federal agencies, national shrines, institutions, memorials and historical sites. On Capitol Hill, Boys Nation senators meet with elected officials from their home states.

Kansas Wesleyan announced its honor roll recipients for the Spring 2024 semester on Thursday, June 6. Four hundred fifty-seven students earned distinction across two different listings. The 457 honored are believed to be the most in school history.

On Saturday, April 6, 2024, at about 4:40 PM, a male subject entered T-Mobile, 3015 S. 9th, Salina, Kansas. The subject began looking at display phones and triggered the theft detection alarms on several of the display phones. The subject apologized each time he set off an alarm. The male began talking on his phone and then ran from the business. The subject had been able to remove an iPhone 15 Pro prior to fleeing the business.&nbsp;

The subject ran to the Walmart parking lot where he met up with another male. Both subjects entered what was described as a newer black Chevy Tahoe which drove eastbound on Schilling. Total loss was valued at $1000.&nbsp;

The subject was described as being 5’9” and weighing approximately 140 pounds. He was wearing a black shirt and black jeans. He was described as having a Middle Eastern accent.&nbsp;

ABILENE&nbsp;— Governor Laura Kelly on Thursday joined veterans of World War II, the Eisenhower Foundation, and local, state, and federal leaders at the Eisenhower Presidential Library and Museum to observe the 80th&nbsp;anniversary of D-Day, according to a media release from her office.

“As we commemorate the 80 years since D-Day, we pay tribute to the men and women who bravely fought in World War II,”&nbsp;Governor Laura Kelly said.&nbsp;“General Eisenhower's leadership and expertise were invaluable in carrying out this successful operation, which laid the foundation for the peace he championed throughout his lifetime. May we never forget the sacrifices and stories of those who served.”&nbsp;

The D-Day operation brought together land, air, and sea armed forces on the beaches of Normandy in World War II. Under the leadership of Kansan and then-General Dwight D. Eisenhower, the operation resulted in France's liberation and the Allied forces' subsequent victory.&nbsp;

“Today, we honor those who served and those who gave their all to end the last World War,”&nbsp;said Meredith Sleichter, Executive Director of the Eisenhower Foundation.&nbsp;“As one of the first organizations formed to honor World War II veterans, the Eisenhower Foundation is honored to hold this event alongside the global commemoration of D-Day. We do this to ensure we do not forget the sacrifices made to ensure the freedoms we still hold dear today.”&nbsp;

The Eisenhower Foundation was formed in 1945 to honor President Eisenhower through programs and events that celebrate his legacy. The D-Day remembrance ceremony included a wreath-laying and certificates of honor for 21 World War II veterans.&nbsp;

Gov. commemorates 80th anniversary of D-Day at Eisenhower Library

The world is holding its breath this year for the Kansas wheat harvest to kick into full swing, but 150 years ago, the first harvest of Turkey Red wheat was largely dismissed as a small experiment. The introduction and adoption of this single variety, however, would forever change the wheat industry and establish the genetic lineage for the wheat Kansas farmers will harvest this summer.&nbsp;

“Probably no year holds more significance to the wheat industry in Kansas than 1874,” said Aaron Harries, Kansas Wheat vice president of research and operations. “The Mennonite farmers who emigrated that year to Kansas from Ukraine helped develop Kansas into a rich and productive agricultural economy. These families brought with them Turkey Red winter wheat, and — as they say, the rest is history.”&nbsp;

The Kansas territory officially became the state of Kansas on January 28, 1861. Just months before the start of the Civil War, frontier farming looked very different than today’s modern farmsteads. The soft wheat planted in Western Europe was considered ill-suited for Kansas, requiring substantial labor to plant by hand and to thresh by beating wheat heads against rocks.&nbsp;

The 34th state changed quickly, thanks to the signing of the Homestead Act in 1862, which gave citizens or future citizens up to 160 acres of land if they lived on and improved it for five years. The first train tracks from east to west were laid the next year. Homesteaders loaded into covered wagons and train cars, answering the call to “Go West, young man” and carve out new lives for themselves and their families on the Kansas prairie.&nbsp;

One hopeful homesteader, Bernard Warkentin, a Mennonite miller from Crimea, settled near Halstead, Kansas, in 1871. He carried the seeds of Turkey Red wheat, a hard winter wheat variety that was tremendously successful in Eastern Europe. The hardy variety was planted in the fall and could be harvested in the summer, allowing it to take advantage of timely moisture and withstand the cold Kansas winters that left settlers burning buffalo chips to stay warm. The first field of Turkey Red wheat was planted in Marion County in 1873 and harvested in the summer of 1874.&nbsp;

That same year would change the trajectory of Kansas agriculture forever, thanks to 12,000 German Mennonites who left modern Ukraine specifically to settle in Kansas at the invitation from the railroad and with promised religious freedom from the young state government.&nbsp;

Like Warkentin, his fellow Mennonites brought their favorite wheat, toting hand-picked seeds in large jars and sacks. They also brought game-changing farming practices like leaving fields fallow in between planting cycles, applying fertilizer to fields and using large threshing stones to separate the wheat kernels from the stalks that enveloped them.

Turkey Red was revolutionary, but it took time for the milling industry to adjust from milling soft wheat with lower protein and weaker gluten (think soft cookies) to the new hard red winter wheat, which had higher protein and stronger gluten (think of a loaf of bread that holds its shape). Just as the farmers discovered the hardiness of Turkey Red and the millers unlocked its better quality, the variety quickly spread and took over Kansas agriculture.&nbsp;

By 1919, Turkey Red wheat constituted more than 82 percent of planted acres in Kansas. It remained the most popular variety until 1939 — maintaining its dominance as superior genetics for crossing into new varieties.&nbsp;

“There was simply nothing like it at that time,” Harries said. “Turkey Red became the most desirable wheat in the world, and Kansas became the world’s breadbasket.”&nbsp;

Today, half of Kansas wheat varieties can trace their lineage back to Turkey Red. Wheat breeders improved on Turkey Red wheat, establishing shorter modern varieties with built-in disease resistance and improved yield potential while maintaining milling and baking quality. On Wednesday, the Kansas Golf Coaches Association unveiled their 2024 All-State golf teams, and several of our area athletes were honored.

Those honored included Chapman’s Danny Jackson, Southeast of Saline’s Dylan Esch, Solomon’s Spencer Coup, and Sacred Heart’s Michael Matteucci, Hunter Newell, Luke Newell and Walker Tuttle, from the 2A state champion Knights

Further to the north the Kansas City Royals were looking to get back on track, but that will have to wait as thunderstorms in the forecast postponed their game with the Guardians

The Royals will play in a split doubleheader today, with game one at 1:10 and game two set for 6:40

And finally some news from the Arena Football League where on Wednesday the AFL welcomed in Gary Compton as Director of Football Operations

Compton will oversee all aspects of football ops, including team management, game scheduling, and player development, as well as the implementation of advanced training programs, to promote health and safety

During his time as an AFL head coach Compton won a championship, and has over 25 years of experience in football operations and management.
