Springtime Craft & Antique Bash Friday, Saturday in Fieldhouse

For the first time since 2019, the Salina South Super Cougars will take the court April 26.

The game is scheduled for 1:50 p.m. April 26 in Salina South High School, 730 E. Magnolia Road.

The Super Cougar Basketball Game is a school-wide celebration where the special education students of Salina South will take the basketball court in a unified basketball game, Tyler Smith, Salina South physical education teacher told Salina Post. The Super Cougars first took the court in 2019 and had an extremely successful game, however, they have not taken the court since.

"The band will be rocking, the cheerleaders will be bouncing, and the student body will be electric. We hope that you can join in the celebration of our entire student body," Smith said.

On Oct. 1, 2022, between midnight and 3 a.m., unknown suspect(s) entered a storage unit in the 3300 block of S. Ninth Street and stole multiple firearms and tools from the property. 

One vehicle of interest in this investigation is an unknown-color single-cab pickup.

●Remington model 12, hexagon barrel pump .22, with a dark wood stock, the barrel also had a blister in it from a bad round. Early 1900's

●Pieta Remington black powder pistol, Remington copy, in black case with shooter kit and lead balls.

●(2) Ruger .22 with a dark wood stock, dark wood stocks.

●Baldwin company, single shot black powder 12 gauge, break barrel, says "New Orleans, Louisiana" on the gun, dark brown stock. Rifle had rust patina, from the early 1900's.

Crimestoppers seeks tips about storage unit burglary

Beginning Monday, the City of Salina Public Works Department will be replacing a section of pavement that is cracked and settled in the northbound lane on the north side of the N. Broadway Boulevard overpass.

The roadway will remain open but traffic will be slowed down and detoured around the construction. We encourage motorists to use caution when traveling in the active work area.

Weather permitting, repairs are expected to be completed within three to five days.

Roadwork to begin Monday on Broadway north of overpass

On Monday,&nbsp; the Kansas Department of Transportation will resume resurfacing work on Interstate 135 in Saline County.

Construction crews will be finishing work on the southbound lanes of I-135 as well as completing the final 12 miles of northbound I-135 between the McPherson/Saline County line and the Interstate 70/I-135 junction, beginning with the I-70 ramps and working from W. Schilling Road north to I-70.

During construction, traffic will be reduced to one 16-foot lane at a reduced speed through the work zone. Drivers should expect minimal delays, not exceeding five minutes.&nbsp;

APAC-Kansas Inc. Shears Division of Hutchinson is the prime contractor and has scheduled this $17 million project to now be completed in June 2023, weather permitting.

KDOT urges all motorists to be alert and obey the warning signs when approaching and driving through a highway work zone.&nbsp; To stay aware of all road construction projects across Kansas, go to&nbsp;<a href="http://www.kandrive.org/" target="_blank">www.kandrive.org</a>&nbsp;or call 5-1-1.

Resurfacing on I-135 in Saline County to resume Monday

ABILENE - The Abilene Fire Department and Public Works Department will begin the annual process of flushing city fire hydrant lines and exercising hydrant valves starting Monday.

 All fire hydrants are expected to be completed by the end of the month.

Residents living where the hydrant flushing occurs may experience a drop in their home's water pressure or see rust-colored water coming from their pipes.

The water is safe for drinking or bathing; however, it is recommended that residents wait a few hours before doing laundry.

The City of Abilene is divided into six sections for this process.&nbsp;

●Section&nbsp;1-&nbsp;North of&nbsp;Interstate&nbsp;70.

With Easter coming up Sunday, several local organizations have scheduled Easter egg hunts for later in the week.

K-State Salina Purple Egg Hunt and Pancake Feed Saturday beginning at 8 a.m. 2310 Centennial Road

The family-friendly day kicks off with a pancake feed hosted by the K-State Flight Team at 8 a.m. in the Studen Life Center. There is no cost for the pancake feed, but donations are welcome. 

During the morning, a K-State bunny will be available for photos. Festivities continue with more than 2,000 eggs filled with candy and prizes for the hunt beginning at 9:30 a.m. in the UAS Pavillion (look for the large black nets in the middle of campus.) The egg hunt will also feature one golden egg with a special prize for each age category. There is no cost to participate.

Signs will be up around the campus to help visitors find the locations, according to information from K-State Salina.

Salina Parks &amp; Recreation annual Easter Egg Hunt Saturday beginning at 10 a.m. 841 Markley Road

The Salina Parks &amp; Recreation Department is teaming up with the Salina Optimist to host this free event. It is open to children ages 1 to 10! It will be held on Saturday on Field No. 1 of the Berkley Family Recreational Area, 841 Markley Road. The first hunt will begin promptly at 10 a.m. so be there early! The schedule is as follows.

The City of Salina announced today that Salina City Commissioners will meet in two strategic planning sessions in April.

The first session is scheduled for 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Friday in room 200 of Tony’s Pizza Event Center, 800 The Midway.

The second strategic planning session is scheduled for 9 a.m.-3 p.m.  April 18, also in room 200 at Tony’s Pizza Event Center. 

Both meetings are open to the public. Additionally, members of the public will have opportunities to provide input to commissioners during public forums scheduled for 11:45 a.m. and 3:45 p.m. Friday and 11:45 a.m. and 2:45 p.m. on April 18.

Salina City Commission strategic planning sessions begin Friday

If you have some unused and unneeded prescription drugs that you aren't sure what to do with, the Saline County Sheriff's Office can help.

Sheriff's office personnel will be at multiple locations as a part of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration's (DEA) National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on April 22, Saline County Sheriff's Lieutenant Sean Kochanowski said this morning. 

According to the DEA website, "The National Prescription Drug Take Back Day aims to provide a safe, convenient, and responsible means of disposing of prescription drugs, while also educating the general public about the potential for abuse of medications."

Sheriff's office personnel will be collecting unused and unneeded prescription drugs from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. April 22 at the following locations, Kochanowski said.

●Salina Regional Health Center, 400 S. Santa Fe Avenue

If you can't make it to one of the drop-off sites that day, you can drop off your unused and unneeded prescription drugs in the lobby of the Saline County Sheriff's Office, 251 N. 10th Street, during regular business hours. Additionally, there also is a collection bin for needles and other sharps in the lobby of the sheriff's office.

Kochanowski said that since Oct. 7, 2013, the sheriff's office has collected 12,998.8 pounds of drugs for safe disposal.

On March 21, 1:11 a.m., officers with the Salina Police Department were dispatched to the Comfort Inn &amp; Suites at 1949 N. Ninth Street, regarding an aggravated burglary.

An employee reported she noticed an individual walking around the hotel lobby. When the employee went to investigate, the person jumped over the counter and began taking cash from the register. The suspect fled the area on foot when confronted by the employee. 

The suspect was wearing a dark-colored camo patterned coat, dark-colored blue jeans, gray gloves, a mask over their face, and gray slip on shoes.

CKF Addiction Treatment is asking members of the public to share their concerns and what they would like to discuss and learn more about during an upcoming forum.

"In an effort to engage and inform our community members of the efforts put forth by varying agencies in the Salina and Saline County area, we will be holding an educational forum to discuss developments in the cross-sections of mental health, substance abuse, criminal justice, and homelessness. This forum is to help facilitate growth, improvement, and change in these areas through discussion with our community members," CKF noted in a news release distributed this morning.

The forum is scheduled for 6-8 p.m. May 3 in the Salina Grace Community Resource Center, 142 S. Seventh Street. The forum is being organized by the CIT Council, a collaboration of local services for mental health, substance use disorder, housing, and criminal justice.

Public input sought prior to multi-faceted forum in May

HAYS –&nbsp;Fort Hays State University's Kansas Academy of Mathematics &amp; Science (KAMS) is offering a STEM Summit beginning June 4 and ending June 6. The summit is open to all incoming 8th, 9th, and 10th-grade students.

Students will work in teams, meet new friends, and perform exciting hands-on experiments that make science, technology, engineering, and math come alive.

Campers will choose from a broad range of activities, including:

●Get ready to be dazzled, challenged, and experience a few booms. Check out some of the best science demonstrations used in teaching. Can you survive the bed-of-nails?

●Work as a local game warden attempting to solve the case of the poached whooping crane. Learn how insects can fight crime in the name of conservation and practice molecular biology techniques to nail down the culprit. Collect data in the field and examine the findings in the lab to solve the mystery.

●Perform experiments to approximate Pi and use hands-on and algebraic methods to prove the Pythagorean Theorem.

●Put your STEM knowledge to the test as you work with a team to crack codes, find clues, and solve puzzles in a race against the clock to “Break-out!” Are you ready for a challenge?

●Explore how the chemistry of cooking and art are encountered in everyday life. Work with foods containing carbohydrates, proteins, and lipids. Explore the chemistry of ink, perfumes, and paper-making.

●Learn the science behind the purchasing decisions you make every day and the impact they have on your friends, community, and around the world. Use fun, engaging exercises to illustrate behavior and free markets; you will not look at your next purchase the same way.

●See how research is leading to the science classroom of the future with 360 videos. Work with a team to capture nature in action with a 360 camera and see how this technology can explore the world.

●Use computer-aided design technologies like Autodesk Inventor and Autodesk Revit to produce a one-of-a-kind 3-dimensional object. Learn how 3D scanners and virtual reality will impact the engineering design world.

The registration fee is $25, non-refundable for Kansas residents and $100 for non-Kansas residents. On Wednesday the Salina City Commission will be meeting in a special session to receive, deliberate upon, and possibly take action on presentations from developers in response to the city’s Request for Proposals (RFP) titled Design-Build-Finance for the Salina Market Rate Apartment Project. 

The Salina City Commission meeting will begin at 8 a.m. in room 107 of the City-County Building, 300 W. Ash Street, and continue through the day as detailed on their meeting agenda. The city commission will periodically recess for lunch and dinner, as well as to allow for attendance at the memorial service for Salina Fire Department Battalion Chief John Goertzen.

LINDSBORG - A Volunteer Fair for residents of Saline and McPherson counties is coming up Friday in Lindsborg.

The come-and-go event, hosted by the City of Lindsborg and the Smoky Valley Community Foundation, is scheduled for 4-7 p.m. Friday in the J.O. Sundstrom Conference Center, 102 N. Main Street, in Lindsborg.

Organizations from Lindsborg, Salina, and the surrounding areas are scheduled to take part in the event, which was organized to provide participants the opportunity to learn about community organizations and events that rely on volunteerism, according to information from the City of Lindsborg.

Persons who volunteer during the event will have their names included in drawings for prizes, the City of Lindsborg noted in a news release.
