ABILENE - President Dwight Eisenhower's role in ending the Korean War will be the topic of the next Eisenhower Presidential Library Lunch &amp; Learn.

The program is scheduled for noon Thursday and will be offered both in person and online. The in-person program will be in the library building indoor courtyard. Those attending are asked to arrive by 11:45 a.m. Thursday. A light box lunch will be served on a first-come, first-served basis.

The program also is to be <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SwhymB2vu5w">streamed live on YouTube</a>.

The 2023 Lunch &amp; Learn series is made possible courtesy of the Eisenhower Foundation with support from the Jeffcoat Memorial Foundation.

Guest speaker Edward Keefer is scheduled to discuss the Korean War armistice.

"Drawing upon the documentary record and recent scholarship, Keefer examines Eisenhower's role in ending the Korean War," the library noted in a news release.

Keefer received a Ph.D. in history from Michigan State University in 1974. For 34 years, he was an editor of the U.S. Department of State’s official documentary series, Foreign Relations of the United States (FRUS). During that time, he edited or co-edited 25 Foreign Relations volumes including one on Korea, 1952-1954. He has written on Korea and the Korean War. After 2002, he was the General Editor of the FRUS series until his retirement in 2009. He is currently a historian in the U.S. Secretary of Defense’s Historical Office. In 2017, the Office of the Secretary of Defense published his book, Harold Brown: Offsetting the Soviet Military Challenge, 1977-1981. A second book, Caspar Weinberger and the Military Buildup, 1981-1985, is forthcoming. In 2022, the Society for History in the Federal Government awarded him the Roger R. Trask award for service to history of the federal government.

Water Ceremony for Smoky Hill River set for April 30

On April 13, officers with the Salina Police Department responded to Larry’s Transmission, 801 N. 13th Street, in regard to a theft. 

The owner reported that around 4:30 a.m., a truck entered the lot and cut the cable to a 2002 Titan Trailer. The trailer is a tandem axle trailer with two fold-up loading ramps. A yellow 1991 Case 1840 Skid Steer was loaded on the trailer. The skid steer has "LTR" welded and spray painted onto the back side. The trailer and skid steer were subsequently stolen.

Surveillance video shows a truck entering the lot and committing the theft.

The Salina Police Department announced today that its&nbsp;2023 Law Enforcement Memorial Ceremony is set for May 17.

The annual ceremony is scheduled for 8 a.m. May 17 in Jerry Ivey Memorial Park, 2465 Edward Street, and is open to the public.

On Wednesday, Smoky Hill, LLC, of Salina closed to traffic the intersection of W. Lincoln Avenue and Reynolds Street to repair leaking storm sewer pipes. 

Barricades at the nearest intersections inform motorists that the road is closed to through traffic. Access to all properties will be maintained. 

Weather permitting, the work will be completed in four weeks.

The $153,000 project, which also includes drainage improvements at the intersection of Ninth Street and W. Iron Avenue, was a part of the City of Salina's $4.7 million 2022 street maintenance capital improvement program.

MANHATTAN – Kansas State University will be offering a self-paced, online series of its popular Dining with Diabetes program to help address the health concerns of a disease that affects 1 in 9 Kansas adults.&nbsp;

Christina Holmes, a family and consumer sciences specialist for K-State Research and Extension’s southeast regional office, said the first of five weekly classes is scheduled for May 1. <a href="http://bit.ly/42I3Sdz" target="_blank">Online registration</a>&nbsp;is due by April 26, and costs $25.&nbsp;

“The classes incorporate five sessions, so in the month of May, we’ll have a session that opens each week,” Holmes said. “Individuals have the opportunity to take the classes at their own pace; you can sit down and do it all in one afternoon, or maybe you choose to do it one evening after work.”&nbsp;

The courses cover the basics of meal planning, carbohydrate counting, portion control, reading labels and physical activity.&nbsp;

“We don’t only want to provide education, but we also want to become a support system for individual in making lifestyle choices and changes related to diabetes,” Holmes said.&nbsp;

“It’s important to understand when you sign up that you won’t have a live instructor because you will be taking the classes on your own time and at your convenience. Still, for those attending in the virtual format, they can contact the instructor afterwards and still have a dialogue to brainstorm solutions to issues that they may encounter.”&nbsp;

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment reports that in 2020 – the most recent year for which data is available – approximately 1 in 9 Kansas adults (11.1%), or 245,000 people, reported being diagnosed with diabetes.&nbsp;

The American Diabetes Association estimates that diabetes costs Kansans $2.4 billion per year in direct medical expenses and indirect costs; and for those who are hospitalized for diabetes-related conditions, the average hospital stay is four days.&nbsp;

Nationally, 1.5 million Americans are diagnosed with diabetes every year. In the last 20 years, the number of adults diagnosed with diabetes has more than doubled, according to the American Diabetes Association.&nbsp;

The ADA also says that one dollar out of every four in U.S. health care costs is spent on caring for people with diabetes.&nbsp;

“There is a high percentage of people that are at risk for, or have pre-diabetes, that are not aware of it,” Holmes said. “This class could be for someone who may not currently have diabetes, but wants to learn more about or want to learn how to make lifestyle changes to prevent the onset of the disease.”&nbsp;

The Friends of the Salina Public Library organization needs your help to find homes for thousands of gently used books.

The group has scheduled a Spring Used Book Sale from 9:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday and noon-4 p.m. April 23 in the downstairs Youth Services Annex of the library, 301 W. Elm Street.

“We have thousands of books just waiting to be taken home and enjoyed,” said Gretta Kontas, Used Book Sale chair. “We have westerns, mystery, science fiction, romance as well as general fiction for adults and children. Additionally, we have hundreds of large print books and movies.”

“And our prices are so reasonable that you won’t be able to select just one. On Sunday afternoon, patrons will be able to fill a bag (supplied by Brown’s Shoes) with books for just $5,” added Laura Rhodenbaugh, friends organization treasurer.

Additionally, members of Friends of the Salina Public Library can get into the event early, from 4-6 p.m. Friday. 

Salina Public Library cardholders can sign up to become members of the Friends of the Salina Public Library at the adult circulation desk. The cost is $10 a year for an individual membership and $25 a year for a family membership. In addition to getting first dibs on used book sales, friends members do not pay fines on overdue library materials.

The used book sales offered throughout the year ultimately benefit the library and its patrons. The Friends of the Salina Public Library is a volunteer, board-guided organization that acts as a booster club for the library. 

Some of the organization's activities include providing volunteers for library events, purchasing prizes and youth activities for summer reading programs at the library, supplies for the CLASS program, and providing scholarships for teen library volunteers, the friends group noted in a news release.

“We are excited to be able to raise funds to assist with Summer Reading Programs at the library,” said Debbie Toll, vice president of the Friends Advisory Board.

On April 8&nbsp; at 9:49 p.m., officers with the Salina Police Department responded to the Missing Sock Laundromat, 2013 S. Ohio Street regarding an attempted break-in of vending machines. 

Officers spoke with witnesses who reported a tool was used while trying to gain access to two separate machines. Video surveillance shows the below person of interest.

A promotion to raise money for Kansas Honor Flight will be staged at Applebee’s Grill &amp; Bar restaurants Tuesday in locations from Salina to Wichita in central Kansas and in western Kansas.

All day on that Tuesday, half of the revenue from five special fundraiser menu items at Applebee’s in 13 communities, will be donated to send World War II, Korea, and Vietnam veterans to Washington, D.C. for free.

Diners can choose from Three-Cheese Chicken Penne; Fiesta Lime Chicken; Classic Bacon Cheeseburger; Chicken Tender Platter; or Grilled Chicken Caesar Salad.

The promotion is good for Dine-In, Delivery, or Get to Go.

Locations include 2875 S. Ninth in Salina, also Wichita, Andover, Derby, Park City, Hutchinson, McPherson, Newton, Great Bend, Dodge City, Garden City, Liberal and Hays.

Author Debra Anne Stenstrom will be in the Salina Public Library on Saturday to sign her children's book, It's Okay to Be Different.

The event is scheduled for 1-3 p.m. Saturday in the library, 301 W. Elm Street.

Published in November of 2022, It’s Okay to Be Different shares the story of a special needs puppy named Dumplin who was rescued and loved for 10 years. Crippled at birth, Dumplin’s story shows how she was able to overcome obstacles and make the best out of life. With themes of compassion and unconditional love, this book is sure to touch the hearts of its readers, the library noted in a news release.

Debra Anne Stenstrom lived in the Kansas City area for 36 years. After graduating high school in Spring Hill, Kan., in 1975, she studied hospitality management for two years at Johnson County Community College in 1990. She has always had a love for animals, so in 1992, she began working at a Lenexa animal clinic. She went on to become a professional groomer which she continued for nearly 27 years. Currently, she operates a small animal hospital in Junction City with her husband. Her two children and three grandsons also live in Kansas.

Beginning Monday, the City of Salina Public Works Department will be repairing sections of pavement that are broken and settled at the intersection of S. Fourth Street and E. Mulberry Street. 

The roadway will remain open but traffic may be slowed down and detoured around the construction. We encourage motorists to use caution when traveling in the active work area.

Weather permitting, repairs are expected to be completed within three to five days.

Springtime Craft & Antique Bash Friday, Saturday in Fieldhouse

For the first time since 2019, the Salina South Super Cougars will take the court April 26.

The game is scheduled for 1:50 p.m. April 26 in Salina South High School, 730 E. Magnolia Road.

The Super Cougar Basketball Game is a school-wide celebration where the special education students of Salina South will take the basketball court in a unified basketball game, Tyler Smith, Salina South physical education teacher told Salina Post. The Super Cougars first took the court in 2019 and had an extremely successful game, however, they have not taken the court since.

"The band will be rocking, the cheerleaders will be bouncing, and the student body will be electric. We hope that you can join in the celebration of our entire student body," Smith said.
