The Saline County Sheriff's Office will be participating in a Click It or Ticket campaign next week.

Click It or Ticket is scheduled for Monday through June 4. During this period, drivers will see a heightened enforcement of the Kansas Safety Belt Use Act and the Kansas Child Passenger Safety Act. According to information from the sheriff's office, these statutes require that all occupants in vehicles must be appropriately restrained.

"First, I want to thank the drivers that take their safey seriously and buckle up every trip," said Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan.

"I also want people to know that in the interest of saving lives, day or night, the Saline County Sheriff's Office is committed to vigorously ticketing violators of adult seat belt and child safety laws, as well as other traffic infractions, which make the need for occupant restraint so necessary," Soldan added.

The sheriff's office noted that seatbelts have been proven to be one of the best ways to save lives in a vehicle crash. Yet a number of people still don't buckle up.

"Worse still, not wearing a seat belt is a habit that will pass on to your children and teens who, in turn, will think it is safe to not buckle up," the sheriff's office noted.

Saline County Clerk Jamie Doss announced this morning changes to precincts and voting locations for the 2023 election year.

"The most significant changes occurred within the City of Salina. All precincts were renumbered, several combined, and a few will vote at new locations. Additionally, USD 306 - Southeast of Saline, due to new census numbers, amended their member districts this year," Doss said.

According to Kansas Statutes Annotated (KSA) 25-26a02, precincts may be combined in the year following redistricting and must be numbered consecutively. In accordance with those guidelines, the Saline County Clerk's Office conducted a comprehensive evaluation and restructuring of precincts in the county, Doss noted in a news release.

The clerk's office was to begin mailing updated information to all registered voters today.

Registered voters are encouraged to make themselves aware of the changes and familiarize themselves with their newly assigned precincts and voting locations before the next election. A primary election, if required, is scheduled for Aug. 1, according to the <a href="https://www.salinecountyks.gov/election">Election page on the Saline County website</a>.

Registered voters also can find their precinct and voting location information on the <a href="https://myvoteinfo.voteks.org/voterview/">Kansas Secretary of State's VoterView webpage</a>.

"We appreciate the understanding and cooperation of all residents as we work together to ensure a smooth and accessible voting experience for everyone in Saline County," Doss said.

Saline County Clerk announces precinct, voting location changes

Registration is now open for the Smoky Hill River Run.

Formerly known as the Festival Fitness Five, the event is now in its 42 year. Sponsored by Salina Regional Health Center, the run is part of the Smoky Hill River Festival.

The name of the event was changed to more associate it with the river festival, Brandon Martinez, race coordinator, told Salina Post.

This year's event is scheduled for 7-9 a.m. June 10. The starting line is at the retired steam locomotive in Kenwood Park, near the intersection of Center Street and Kenwood Drive.

The Smoky Hill River Run is for all ages and features a five-mile race and two-mile race or walk, along with age bracketed children's races.

Manhattan Running Company will use a timing mat to time the races this year. 

The top three finishers overall in each of the men’s and women’s runs will receive special Smoky Hill River Run commemorative trophies, according to information from Martinez. In addition, medals will be handed out to the top three finishers in each age bracket of the men’s, women’s, and children’s races.

Additionally, the Smoky Hill River Run will have more than a dozen vendors providing food, entertainment and healthy lifestyle resources.

“We are expanding our entertainment and food options as we want to invest in all of our runners from the youngest to the oldest,” Martinez said. “This event is one that you want to bring the entire family to.”

Biscuits and gravy provided by Salina Regional Health Center Food Services will be available for all race participants, he noted. Additionally, children will be able to burn even more energy by bouncing in a bounce house provided by Bounce-A-Roos, LLC, and Bouncer Express. They also can have their faces painted by Color Me Crazy Face Painting. 

Crown Distributors will be providing 30-40 cases of water for the event.

Martinez said 130 Salina Regional Health Center employees and family members, as well as 20 officers from the Salina Police Department, are assisting with this year's race.

Online registration is now open at <a href="http://srhc.com/riverrun">srhc.com/riverrun</a> or fill out an entry form and mail your form and payment to Smoky Hill River Run, Attn: Brandon Martinez, 400 S. A Youth Tobacco and Substance Free Out of School Bash is coming up Friday.

The event, for sixth-graders to 12-graders, is scheduled for 6:30-8:30 p.m. Friday in Tony's Pizza Events Center, 800 The Midway. It is hosted by CKF Addiction Treatment Center and the Saline County Tobacco &amp; Youth Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition.

The Out of School Bash will include DJ Cash Hollistah, a photo booth, games, an obstacle course, snacks, a raffle, and giveaways. Additionally, there will be teen health and wellness resources available at a variety of booths.

Montrose Street will be closed to through traffic and traffic will be detoured around the construction by the way of S. Phillips Avenue.

Weather permitting, repairs are expected to be completed within three to five days.

The City of Salina has announced the dates for its annual water line free chlorine and fire hydrant flushing.

The flushing is scheduled for May 24-July 9. The city's Utilities Department will temporarily modify the disinfection process used to treat the city's drinking water.

"This is a preventative maintenance process and consists of turning off the ammonia feed and increasing the free chlorine feed in order to maintain a more uniform disinfection level throughout the City’s water distribution system and Saline County RWD No. 3," the city noted in a news release.

City water customers may notice a strong chlorine taste or odor of chlorine in the tap water during this time.

"These temporary conditions are normal during the modified disinfection process and will not cause adverse health effects. If you are especially sensitive to the taste or odor of chlorine, keep an open container of drinking water in your refrigerator for a few hours to allow the chlorine to dissipate. Users of home dialysis machines, owners of tropical fish and managers of stores and restaurants with fish and shellfish holding tanks are advised to seek professional advice as the method for removing free chlorine residuals differs from removing chloramine residuals from tap water," the city noted.

Additionally, the city also will be flushing fire hydrants from May 30-July 3.

"A temporary variation in tap water color, as well as possible sediment may occur. Running water at the tap for one or two minutes should help clear this temporary occurrence," the city noted. "Avoid doing laundry if the water is discolored."

Fire hydrants are flushed as a preventative maintenance activity to "maintain the integrity of the water distribution system and to ensure the delivery of high-quality water to city customers.

"Flushing the water distribution system achieves three objectives: helps to keep the interior of the water lines clean (removes sediment); helps maintain good quality water in the water distribution system; and provides an opportunity to check the operation of all fire hydrants. The water is safe to drink but may cause staining of laundry," the city noted.

The event is scheduled for 9 a.m.-4 p.m. June 3 at the Salvation Army, 1137 N. Santa Fe Avenue.

"This is a great opportunity for you to declutter your homes and make some extra cash by selling your gently used items. It's also a chance to help The Salvation Army help the community through our various programs and activities," the Salvation Army noted in a news release.

Those wishing to sell items are asked to call 785-823-2251 to reserve a space. Each space is eight-foot by eight-foot for $20, or two spaces for $30. All participants are responsible for their own sales, the Salvation Army noted.

Food and soft drinks will be available for purchase during the event.

Salina Salvation Army Community Garage Sale set for June 3

On Monday at 10:30 a.m., officers with the Salina Police Department responded to the 1900 block of N. Fifth Street, Salina, regarding a body that had been located. 

On arrival, officers found human remains that were in advanced stages of decomposition. Detectives have been investigating the death. 

The deceased has been identified as Jason Latham, a 40-year-old Salina resident. Detectives are seeking any information regarding Latham and his whereabouts preceding his death.

Last year, staff came to the decision to return to Funded Partners after many deep discussions with business leaders, engaged community members, and local non-profit organizations. Joining Salina Area United Way as a Funded Partner means joining a funded partnership where the end goal of impact is now.

Applications will be accepted throughout the next month, with a closing submission deadline of noon on June 2. Funded Partners will be selected and awarded based on specific criteria outlined by community volunteer members of the Salina Area United Way Grants Committee and Board of Directors. Salina USD 305 announced today the schedule for its Summer Food Program for children.

The program is set to begin May 30, and both breakfast and lunch is scheduled to be served Monday through Friday. The program will run through June 30, but will be closed June 19.

The free meals are for all children ages one through 18. No signup, eligibility or paperwork is required. 

Adults may eat breakfast for $3 per person and lunch for $5 per person.

Lunchtime activities from 12:30-1 p.m., will be provided by the Salina educators. Additionally, there will be book giveaways by the Salina Area United Way.

USD 305's Summer Food Program for children begins May 30

On Tuesday at 10:26 p.m., officers with the Salina Police Department responded to the Heather Ridge Apartments in the 2100 block of E. Crawford Street regarding multiple gunshots being fired. 

On arrival, officers found several shell casings outside and directly to the west of the apartment complex. 

At the same time, officers responded to the 700 block of Moundview Avenue, where a bullet had entered a residence. It is believed one of the fired rounds struck the home. No one was injured by the gunfire. 

Witnesses reported seeing two males, on the property of E. Crawford, who fled on foot after the rounds were fired.

Saline County Treasurer Jim DuBois this morning issued a reminder that 2022 second-half taxes for real estate and personal property are due Wednesday.

The tax statements were mailed out in November. There will be no second-half notice mailed out.

Those owing taxes are asked to send the remittance stub from the bottom of the tax statement with payment. Those who wish to receive a paid receipt are asked to indicate that on the stub.

If you cannot find your statement, you are asked to call the Saline County Treasurer's Office at 785-309-5860 for the amount due and the tax ID number. A copy of the statement can be emailed or mailed upon request.

Interest is due on any 2022 first half taxes that have not been paid, DuBois noted. Persons who still need to pay first-half taxes are asked to call the Treasurer's Office for the correct amount prior to sending payment.

DuBois: 2022 second-half taxes due Wednesday

Say you’re struggling to pay off your credit cards — which is already difficult with high interest rates — and you hear about a company that promises to reduce or eliminate your credit card debt for a fee. Sounds great, right? But how can you tell if that offer is legitimate or a scam?

The FTC recently announced settlements with&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ftc.gov/news-events/news/press-releases/2023/05/ftc-lawsuit-leads-permanent-ban-debt-relief-telemarketing-operators-debt-relief-scam">the operators of a deceptive debt relief scam</a><a></a>. The FTC sued the three operators and their related companies&nbsp;(which went by multiple names including ACRO Services)&nbsp;for&nbsp;taking tens of millions of dollars from people by falsely promising to eliminate or reduce their credit card debt. The scam charged people fees in the thousands of dollars and even told them&nbsp;to stop making payments to their credit card companies — leaving people in a far worse position — with damaged credit and owing their original debts plus thousands in fees and interest.

As part of the settlements with the FTC, these scammers are permanently banned from running any debt relief services or engaging in telemarketing, and they must turn over assets that will be used to provide any possible refunds to people affected by the scam.

Follow these steps to&nbsp;spot and avoid credit card debt relief scams.

●Don’t pay upfront.&nbsp;It’s illegal for a debt relief company to charge you a fee before they do anything to relieve your debt.

●Talk with your credit card company.&nbsp;For free.&nbsp;Call the customer service number on the back of your credit card. Ask for a payment plan that&nbsp;you’ll be able to afford.

●Consider <a href="http://r.ftc.gov/articles/how-get-out-debt">a&nbsp;reputable credit counselor</a>.&nbsp;They can help you develop a payment plan that works for you.

CONSUMER ALERT: Credit card debt relief that isn’t

Registration is now open for CPR, AED, and first aid classes at Salina Family Healthcare Center (SFHC).

"I took a call late last year asking if our clinic provided community CPR classes. Historically, we’ve only provided CPR classes to our employees. I asked around and the idea really took off on its own," said Genell Heimer, SFHC outreach supervisor.

The first Heartsaver class is scheduled for 8 a.m.-noon Saturday at SFHC, 651 E. Prescott Road. Participants will receive a two-year certification after completing the course. The cost of the Heartsaver class is $75.

"We are really excited to offer both Basic Life Support for healthcare providers and Heartsaver CPR classes for anyone who doesn’t work in healthcare," Heimer said. "Most cardiac arrests occur outside of healthcare settings and quality CPR is the single most valuable action someone can take to save a life before medical help arrives."

Each class will review adult and pediatric CPR, how to use an automated external defibrillator (AED), and basic first aid training. The instructors are certified through the American Heart Association.

Additionally, a class will be offered for persons aged 12-18 from 2-6 p.m. on May 25. The class is recommended for teens who have plans to babysit, work as camp counselors, or coach/officiate sports.

To register for one of the classes, call the SFHC Outreach Department at 785-825-7251, ext 642. Employers are encouraged to call the Outreach Department to inquire about group classes provided at work locations.

Deadline to apply for Junior Police Academy is Friday

The month of May is National Bike Month, and communities all across Kansas are celebrating, including those here in north-central Kansas.&nbsp; Established in 1956, National Bike Month is a chance to showcase the many benefits of bicycling and encourage more folks to give biking a try.

On April 18, the Saline County Sheriff’s Office responded to the 3000 block of N. Lightville Road for the report of a burglary in progress.

Upon arrival, it was learned that a resident of the address had confronted a white male suspect and a white female suspect on the property near the vehicle that had been entered. The male suspect approached the resident swinging a weapon by his side.

The suspect's truck (pictured below) is described as a dark-colored older GMC, or Chevy single-cab pickup truck. The vehicle had lime green or yellow painted rims. A silver toolbox was installed in the bed of the truck.

The male suspect was described as having long black hair, with a long narrow chest-length black beard. The male was approximately 6-foot tall, skinny, unknown weight or age.

The female suspect was described as approximately 5 foot 5 inches and 120 pounds. She had long blonde hair in a ponytail. No other details were observed due to the active threat from the male subject.

Additionally, it was learned that the suspects removed a pair of jumper cables and a Spy Point game camera from the property.

Total damage and loss are estimated to be in excess $1,700.

Crimestoppers seeks tips about burglary northwest of Salina

The Saline County Sheriff's Office is changing the way Saline County Jail inmates receive mail.

The jail has contracted with Smart Communications to provide MailGuard electronic mail services, the sheriff's office announced in a news release this morning.

"The changes are being made to streamline the operations of the Sheriff's Office, improve communications, and ensure the safety and well-being of inmates and staff," the sheriff's office noted. "MailGuard is a quick and efficient way for inmates to receive letters and photos electronically."

Beginning Wednesday, inmate postal mail must be sent to the following address.

Once they are released from the jail, inmates can log in at <a href="https://www.smartinmate.com/">https://www.smartinmate.com/</a> and enter their inmate number and password to download their photos, messages, and postal mail for free.Additionally, the sheriff's office encourages inmate family and friends to subscribe to <a href="https://www.mailguardtracker.com/">MailGuard Tracker</a>, a free account that lets them view delivery status, receive notifications about mail being rejected, and download copies of mail that have been received and processed.
