After financial burdens have been laid upon the owner of Seoul USA, a beloved Korean restaurant in Salina, local community members have rallied together in the support of providing funds to keep the restaurant operating.

"I cannot afford and this place is getting too big," said owner Joomi Bobbett after she explained the struggles of keeping the restaurant going.

Joomi, originally from Seoul, South Korea has been living in Salina for over 10 years and has served the community with authentic, made from scratch Korean recipes at her restaurant, Seoul USA. She calls Salina her '2nd home' as she loves serving the community.

"I want to feed Salina healthy food as long as I can," said Jommi. "I take care of my customers like a family, and I love to feed them with by bare hand. Running this restaurant does not feel like a business to me, I love what I do."

After word went through town that Joomi was struggling to keep up with monthly rent, a GoFundMe fundraiser was started by a loyal customer of the restaurant, Kyle Langley. According to the GoFundMe Communications Manager, Langley 'is now calling on the community to help her through a difficult time.'

The following is a statement from the GoFundMe page:&nbsp;

“Our goal is to raise $7,200, which will cover 12 months of the rent increase and help her stay afloat while she transitions to a new location,”&nbsp;the GoFundMe reads.&nbsp;“Let’s come together as a community to support someone who’s given us so much through her food and her heart. Thank you for your kindness and generosity”.

Joomi described that she plans on moving the restaurant to a different location in Salina, so she can keep doing what she loves to do most. For the time being, she can use some help with additional funds to keep serving Salina.

"After COVID, people do not sit and eat, they just take the food to-go or use delivery," said Joomi. "This is just wasted space and rent, so I told my customers on Facebook about it and they are helping me look for a place."

Joomi is known to help others by giving them jobs at the restaurant and teaching them Korean culture. She commented that many students have worked and are currently working at the restaurant as she not only wants to help them build funds for school, but to educate them on Korean culture and cuisine.

"I want to keep this open, especially to let people know about Korean culture," said Joomi. "I am not just selling food here, but I am also educating the people of Salina with the culture and the food."

Rhonda Dixon, employee of Seoul USA described that Joomi is a 'key part of community growth.' Dixon stated that Joomi taught her how to do 'everything in that kitchen.'

"She (Joomi) taught me that when we marinate the food, to think about the people who will eat it, how it will nourish their bodies and to pray over it so they can have good, quality food that is handmade," said Dixon. "She has supported me and gave me alot of confidence in so many areas of my life."&nbsp;

Joomi stated that she travels out of town frequently to buy resources for her Korean recipes. She described that she pays her travel expenses and purchases the resources 'out of her own pocket.'

"Even though I travel to get food, I do not upcharge that towards my menu," said Joomi. "Because I love this community so much, I am more than happy to do that."

According to the US National Weather Service, on Thursday Salina has been a issued a 'Flood Watch' for this evening. Reportedly, heavy rainfall is expected to develop into the afternoon and becoming more widespread overnight, with rainfall rates of 2 to 4 inches per hour possible.

Be aware on the roads as 'Flash Flooding' is likely, according to the US National Weather Service.&nbsp;The highest flooding risk period will occur from late this afternoon through Friday morning.&nbsp;If water begins rising near your location,&nbsp;immediately seek higher ground. 

Saline County Emergency Management states that the main concerns are low water crossings and low-lying areas, where it's difficult to see the shoulder of the road. Drivers should exercise extreme caution, especially in areas known to flood frequently.

Mulberry Creek near Salina:&nbsp;Forecasted to crest above flood stage at 24.75 feet overnight. Exercise extreme caution around waterways and low-lying areas.

Smoky Hill River near Mentor:&nbsp;Expected crest at 17.87 feet, nearing moderate flood levels. Avoid areas prone to flooding.

Smoky Hill River near New Cambria:&nbsp;Projected crest at 23.59 feet tonight, causing minor flooding. Monitor conditions and be prepared to move to higher ground.

Another round of storms are anticipated to occur on Wednesday evening, after the flooding from Monday evening.

According to the US National Weather Service (Wichita, KS), a round of storms are anticipated for Wednesday evening with the best chances occurring across central Kansas. Reportedly, the strongest storms may produce wind gusts near 60 mph and heavy rainfall.

Salina is depicted to have a 30-60% chance of storms for Wednesday night.

LINCOLN COUNTY &amp; SALINE COUNTY - The US National Weather Service (Wichita, KS) has issued a flash flood warning for northern Lincoln County until late Monday evening.

According to the US National Weather Service (Wichita, KS), north Lincoln County is under a flash flood warning until 11:45 pm. Reportedly, radar is estimating 4 to 6 inches of rainfall across northern Lincoln county between Barnard and Lincoln.&nbsp;The storms are nearly stationary with more heavy rainfall likely.

The US National Weather Service stated this flash flood warning is a "very dangerous flooding situation" and to not drive in flooded areas. They are advising people to report any&nbsp;flooding problems to local officials.

According to the US National Weather Service, northwest Saline County is under a "high risk" of flash flooding,&nbsp;especially near the town of Glendale with slow moving thunderstorms producing 4 to 5 inches of rainfall.

Saline County Emergency Management advises people in the Saline County area to stay home during this flash flood warning. Saline County Emergency Management has stated the following:

Avoid low-lying areas and roads near creeks or ditches.

Keep headlights on and drive slowly if travel is absolutely necessary.&nbsp;

Flash flood warning issued for northern Lincoln County and high risk for northwest Saline County

The US National Weather Service has issued an 'extreme heat warning' for Central Kansas until Wednesday evening.

According to the&nbsp;US National Weather Service, on Saturday, July 19th an 'extreme heat warning' was issued to be in effect from now until Wednesday evening (July 23rd). Heat indices were reported to be as high as 110 degrees, with high's being over 100 degrees. 

It was reported that humidity will also remain in place through this period, which will make it feel even hotter. Chances of showers and storms could occur through the week, with the best chances occurring on Thursday, July 24th.

The US National Weather Service has left some tips about staying safe during this advisory:

Work outdoors early or late in the day, and take breaks in the shade as often as possible

Check up on the elderly, sick and those without A/C

Never leave children or pets unattended in your vehicles ('look before you lock')

Extreme heat warning issued in Central Kansas until Wednesday evening

The US National Weather Service Wichita, KS has announced that rain and storms are beginning to move east into central Kansas as of 9:45 pm, late Thursday evening.

According to the US National Weather Service Wichita, KS, the strongest storms will be capable of producing up to '60 mph winds and quarter size hail.

The National Weather Services advises to stay vigilant and have multiple ways to receive any updates or warnings.

UPDATE: Storms moving towards Central Kansas late Thursday evening

Thunderstorms are expected to occur on Thursday evening throughout parts of central Kansas.

According to the US National Weather Service (Wichita, KS), scattered thunderstorms are expected to move into central Kansas this evening with a few strong to severe storms possible. The storms are expected to occur around 7:00 pm and likely last till about 2:00 am, early Friday morning.

The National Weather Service encourages to ensure you have a plan if you are outdoors and storms start to approach your location.

Eagle radio/media stations&nbsp;99.9FM KSKG&nbsp;and&nbsp;910AM/107.5FM KINA&nbsp;will be giving live updates on air if necessary.

Thunderstorms expected throughout central Kansas on Thursday evening

The Saline County Emergency Management team continues to monitor severe weather conditions and the associated flood risks, as the region enters an active weather period today through tonight on Tuesday, June 17th.

According to Saline County Emergency Management, the National Weather Service has placed much of central and south-central Kansas, including Saline County, under a 'moderate risk' for severe storms beginning this afternoon and continuing into early Wednesday morning. 

Residents should expect the potential for:

Wind gusts of 60 to 80 mph, tennis ball-sized hail, a few tornadoes﻿ and heavy rainfall that could result in localized flooding overnight.

Saline County Emergency Management also notes that&nbsp;area rivers and streams are forecast to rise significantly.&nbsp;

Mulberry Creek near Salina: Expected to crest near 26.5 feet, reaching major flood stage.

Smoky Hill River near Mentor: Forecasted crest near 24.2 feet, approaching moderate flood stage.

Smoky Hill River near New Cambria: Projected to crest around 30.3 feet, above moderate flood stage.

River levels are currently well below flood stage but are expected to rise rapidly as rainfall moves through the area. Residents in low-lying areas near rivers, streams and creeks should prepare for possible flooding and monitor conditions closely. Saline County encourages residents to not drive through flooded roadways and to always follow official detours and barricades.

Saline County Emergency Management remains in close coordination with the National Weather Service and regional response partners and will provide additional information as conditions warrant.

UPDATE: Possibility of severe thunderstorms and flooding for Saline County to continue throughout Tuesday evening into Wednesday morning

The notorious 'log jam' along the Smoky Hill River near Bill Burke and Indian Rock Park is looking to be cleaned up after Salina City Commissioners approved a quote price from a construction company.

On Monday, Commissioners and Utilities Director Martha Tasker discussed matters going forward regarding the current 'log jam'&nbsp;along the Smoky Hill River near Bill Burke and Indian Rock Parks. Tasker presented four quotes that were bidded by four construction companies, with one of those being DIEHL Enterprises Inc. from Salina.&nbsp;

DIEHL Enterprises proposed a quote totaling&nbsp;$411,231 with a (10%) construction contingency, for a total project authorization not to exceed $452,351. The log jam removal that DIEHL proposed would be a 6-week log removal process.&nbsp;

City Commissioners approved the bid from DIEHL Enterprises Inc.&nbsp;

The City sent&nbsp;the required documents to the United States Army Corp of Engineers and the Department of Agriculture Division of Water Rights for approval. Approval is anticipated prior to the notice to Proceeds for the log jam removal.

Tasker stated she has minded ways to prevent this from affecting the river again during the Smoky Hill River Renewal Project process. 

DIEHL Enterprises said 'they want it to be a safe operation' as far as removing the log jam at a 'reasonable time.'

The City is also hoping for some additional funding, especially after the flooding events from last week.

Tasker stated that she hopes by mid-August to remove the log jam.

Plan approved and set for the removal of the notorious log jam near Bill Burke and Indian Rock Parks

Salina Commissioners accepted a grant agreement that helps with&nbsp; homelessness prevention and the facilitation of permanent, stable housing.

During the Salina City Commission meeting on Monday, commissioners voted to accept a grant agreement with the Kansas Housing Resources Corporation (KHRC) for the 2025 Kansas Emergency Solutions Grant (ESG), totaling&nbsp;$216,348.&nbsp;

According to the City of Salina, the ESG is a federal block grant authorized by Subtitle B of the McKinney-Vento Homelessness Assistance Act and is administered by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). 

The primary focus of this grant program is homelessness prevention and the facilitation of permanent, stable housing.

"We are doing things to address homelessness and those are that are less fortunate," said Commissioner Longbine.

The four agencies that are receiving the grant are Ashby House, DVACK, Central Kansas Mental Health Center (CKMHC) and Salina Grace. 

Community  Relations Specialist and grant administrator for the Emergency Solutions Grant (ESG), Marissa Patton said the grant will help these agencies with:&nbsp;

Street Outreach, Emergency Shelter, Homeless Prevention and Rapid Re-Housing.&nbsp;

The amount the agencies will receive are:&nbsp;

The City of Salina provided an additional amount of&nbsp;$5,693 of&nbsp;staff administrative costs.

Salina Commissioners accepts grant for homelessness prevention and stable housing

An Abilene man was arrested by Salina Police after allegedly assaulting a woman from Abilene.

According to the Salina Police Department (SPD) on the evening of Friday, July 25th, two people from Abilene, KS were leaving downtown Salina after attending 'weekend events.' Allegedly, a man identified as 32-year old Jonathan Picking and a 32-year old woman got into an argument on Ohio St.&nbsp;

During the argument, it was reported that when the woman attempted to call police that Picking 'took the phone away from her and threw it away in a backyard of a home.' SPD stated that Picking also 'knocked a cup out of her hand, which caused a minor injury to the woman.'

SPD officers then tracked the phonecall and arrived to the area where Picking and the woman were at. Officers then arrested Picking without incident and booked him into the Saline County Jail on the following requested charges:

Robbery, Domestic Battery and Criminal Damage to Property.

The victim did not need any medical treatment from the injury she suffered on her hand.

Abilene man arrested after alleged assault on a woman

Violent argument results in a man's arrest and being accused of assault charges.

According to the Salina Police Department (SPD) on Friday, July 25th an argument occurred between a man and a woman at a home in the 2400 block of Simmons. Allegedly, a man identified as 30-year old Dimitrios Laskou and a 26-year old woman were arguing over 'certain living arrangements.' As the argument boiled, Laskou reportedly 'put his hands around the neck' of the woman and 'impeded her breathing.'&nbsp;

The woman was able to call SPD about the incident and when officers arrived, they found both Laskou and the woman inside the home. Officers arrested Laskou without incident and booked him into the Saline County Jail on the following requested charges:

Aggravated Battery, Domestic Battery and Violation of a Protection Order.

SPD stated the victim received 'minor marks to her neck' and did not need any medical attention.

Violent argument results in a man's arrest and being accused of assault charges

Salina Police arrested a man after he allegedly threatened two people with a knife.

According to the Salina Police Department (SPD) on Friday, July 25th, three people were involved in an argument over 'living arrangements' on the 600 block of S. 5th St. Allegedly, a 47-year old man identified as Abraham Glover, 'threatened' the other two residents with a knife during the argument. The two victims were identified as a 56-year old man and a 67-year old woman.

Subsequently, Glover had left the residence without harming the two victims. SPD was then notified about the alleged threat and when officers arrived, they located Glover about a block away from the home.

Officers then arrested Glover without incident and allegedly found a marijuana pipe he had during the arrest. 

Glover is facing requested charges of Possession of Marijuana, Criminal Threat and Disorderly Conduct.

Man arrested after allegedly threatening two people with a knife

ABILENE - A special horse will be the mount for an Abilene cowgirl this weekend. 'Jackie the horse' might be blind, but that doesn’t make her useless.

This week, at the Wild Bill Hickok Rodeo in Abilene, Kansas, Lindsey Hughes will breakaway rope on her 21-year-old mare, a sorrel with two white back socks.

Hughes acquired Jackie three years ago when she retired her other horse, Topper, after injury. Jackie had sustained an injury at age two, which rendered her blind. The mare has adjusted to her disability. She has no sight on the right side, which works in the breakaway roping because the calf is on her left side.

“When you walk into the stall, I let her know I’m there,” Hughes said. “Other than that, she doesn’t spook. She’s adjusted to it. She’s pretty cool.”

A native of Augusta, Kansas, Hughes lived in Oklahoma for several years before she met Ty Bryant, a Hope resident and a team roper, at a rodeo in Nebraska. She moved to Abilene two years ago, and the couple is engaged to be married next April.

Hughes has competed in rodeo since she was in high school, first in the International Pro Rodeo Association (IPRA) and now in the Women’s Pro Rodeo Association (WPRA). In 2023, when her horse Topper was hurt and retired, she didn’t think she would compete again. But that’s when she was persuaded by a friend to consider Jackie, and she bought the horse.

When Jackie came home with Hughes and was introduced to Topper, the two became friends.

“Topper didn’t like many horses,” she said, “but they were best buds and ran together. She just loved him.”

When Topper died in September of last year, Jackie was there for Topper and Hughes as well. As Hughes stayed with Topper in the barn as he passed, Jackie “stood beside me. I think she grieved like we did.” Jackie has plenty of personality, Hughes said. “We call her a fire breathing dragon. You would never know she’s 21. She doesn’t act like it at all. She’s pretty feisty and pretty sassy most of the time. We like to say it’s her world, we’re just living in it.”

Hughes does not compete full time; she is an apparel sales representative and travels across the state.

She’s had a “standout” career, she said, having won IPRA world and average titles. “I’ve had major accomplishments and I’ve gotten to do and see things through rodeo.”

She appreciates the growth of breakaway roping.

“It’s amazing to see the talent and the growth and be part of it,” she said, “and I’m thankful for the Kansas rodeos who have breakaway.”

Jackie is close to retirement age, but she’s an inspiration to Hughes.

“She is my everyday reminder that we can be older and have imperfections and still be very competitive," said Hughes.

Hughes will compete in Abilene on Friday, August 1.

The Wild Bill Hickok Rodeo is July 29-August 1, with performances at 7:30 pm each night.

Tickets are $12 for adults in advance and $15 at the gate. Children’s tickets, ages 4-10, are $8.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Ronald Acuña Jr., Marcell Ozuna and Austin Riley homered as the Atlanta Braves snapped a five-game losing streak with a 10-7 victory over the Kansas City Royals, who equaled a club record by walking 14 batters Monday night.

It was the fourth time the Royals walked 14 and the first since 2006.

Acuña hit a two-run homer, his 14th, in the third and an inning later Ozuna added another two-run shot, also his 14th. Riley hit a solo homer, his 15th, in the seventh — and his three-run double in the eighth made it 9-3.

HUNT:&nbsp;“I know (Chiefs President) Mark Donovan spoke to you all a week ago and shared that we've made a lot of progress, and that's absolutely true, and that progress is on both sides of the state line. We're grateful to have two really good options. I don't want to get into how close we're making a decision, because we've found over time with stadium situations, that until they're done, they're not done. There's a lot of work, a lot of moving parts, and we're working through those. Certainly, I would say we feel an urgency to bring the process to a conclusion. But that doesn't mean I can will it to happen in any specified period of time.”

Q:&nbsp;On the two good options for the future stadium.

HUNT:&nbsp;“Well, I think if we were to move to Kansas, it would obviously involve a new stadium, and our priority on Missouri side has been a renovation of GEHA Field at Arrowhead. So, those are the two primary options.”

Q:&nbsp;The two projects would cost different amounts of money, and the two states have structured things differently. How big of a factor is getting a vote done, and how much is the cost to you and your family?

HUNT:&nbsp;“The two projects obviously cost different amounts, that's absolutely true. And you know, from a family standpoint, we're not really focused on our financial commitment. We're more focused on getting it right, picking the option that's best for our fans, one that's best for the community, and best for the organization for the next several decades.”

Q:&nbsp;This is the most momentous decision for the organization since your dad moved the team here. Can you describe the family dynamics when you and your siblings are ready to break it all down and make a decision?

HUNT:&nbsp;“Yeah, Vahe (Gregorian), you're exactly right that it's a very big decision, and it's one I certainly want my family's input on. It's something that will affect our family for multiple decades and maybe several generations. So, having broad input is really important. I'm hopeful that the decision will be clear cut for us. I don't know that it will be when we get to that point, but certainly having a collaborative process is important.”

Q:&nbsp;On balancing emotion and sentimentality when making this decision.

HUNT:&nbsp;“Well, I think anybody who has been coming to Chiefs games for decades understands what a special stadium GEHA Field at Arrowhead is. And you know, it's fun being here at training camp and getting to interact with our fans. And I certainly hear from them in terms of their thoughts. And many of them have grown up going to games with their dad, their mother, their family, and so it's a very special place for them. So that'll be part of the calculus for sure.”

Q:&nbsp;On how progress is going for World Cup modifications and how those might impact the stadium for the start of football season.

HUNT:&nbsp;“So that process has been going on for a couple of years now. This summer was really the bulk of the work where we had to take out a number of rows of seats on the north side of the stadium so that we can have the proper width for a World Cup pitch. And we pretty much have that complete, and the stadium will be back in its normal configuration come late August, when we host our preseason game here.”

Q:&nbsp;We heard there were new beds in the dorms this year at training camp. How did that come about?

HUNT:&nbsp;“Yeah, we’re always looking for ways improve the amenities for our players. Certainly, sleep is really important, particularly at training camp. Something you've probably heard the players talk about over the years is how challenging it is to sleep in a dorm room. And I'll second that, because when I'm here, I sleep in the dorm room with them. A number of our veteran players in the past have brought in their own mattresses. We were able to partner with a local furniture store this year to provide mattresses for all the players and the staff. Having spent a few nights here, I'll say the sleeping is definitely better.”

Q:&nbsp;On it being the 15th&nbsp;year of training camp at St. Joe.

HUNT:&nbsp;“This is our 15th year hosting training camp here out of the last 16 years. The experience has been fantastic for the organization. First of all, starting with the football team, I know you've heard Coach Reid talk about how important he thinks it is in terms of bringing the team together to be up here in this environment. The facilities are outstanding. The folks in the cafeteria do a great job with the food. So, it's been an all-round win for the football team. But, I also really like it in terms of the opportunity it provides our fan base to attend practices. It was great to see so many fans out here the last couple of days. Many of them are local. Some have driven up from Kansas City or really across the bi-state region. And having the fans here helps the players from an intensity level at practice, and then also creates a very special environment where the fans and players are able to interact, like we saw here just a few minutes ago with our players signing autographs. So, it's really been great for the organization. We were glad to be able to extend our relationship going forward. We do believe it's been a key part of helping us win a few championships.”

Q:&nbsp;On overall feelings on how the Draft went.

HUNT:&nbsp;“Following the Draft, Brett Veach and his team felt like they had knocked it out of the park again. And we've seen some draft classes here recently where we've been able to bring a number of new starters to the franchise. And I think he feels the same way about this Draft class. We've only been out there for a week, a lot of it was without pads, but the early returns are really positive. I think it's going to be a special Draft class. Part of that was shoring up the offensive line that you mentioned, I would also say the defensive line as well. Both sides in the trenches, we think we’ve added some players that are really going to be able to help us, but they're rookies and they’ve got a lot to learn, and there's a learning curve that they'll have to go through.”

Q:&nbsp;On the urgency of making a stadium decision.

HUNT:&nbsp;“The urgency for us really comes from the timeframe of our existing lease, which expires in the spring of 2031. So, we're coming up on five and a half years left on the lease, and stadium projects generally are four and a half to five years from the time you start designing, getting the entitlements and then building whatever you're building. They're not short-term projects. So, it's important for us to be able to make a decision somewhat in the in the near term to be able to be on schedule to have the renovated or new building open in ’31.”

Q:&nbsp;On potential development around a stadium.

NAGY:&nbsp;“Yeah, he (Jalen Royals) is doing a good job. He got to OTAs, again like a lot of these rookie wide receivers, we put a lot on them, and I think that he has grown from OTAs till now in the summertime. He has been able to – there is some little things that he is doing within his routes, whether it is in zone or winning versus man. So, he is doing some good things, and we want to keep making him grow, leading through what he sees. I think he is a visualizer, so when he sees it, it takes him one time, then the next time he comes back and does a good job.”

Q:&nbsp;Thoughts on deep passing in general.

NAGY:&nbsp;“That has been a focus for us. That’s – I think we all talk about last year and how it went as far as the lack of explosives. Being able to figure out where does that start at? What are we doing, making sure we’re doing our jobs as coaches. What are the players doing, putting it all together? Without a doubt that has been an emphasis and we want to speak it into existence, and it starts with teaching it. Making sure the guys understand it and then when we get out there in practice, we execute it.”

Q: What impresses you most about Josh Simmons?

NAGY:&nbsp;“His (Josh Simmons), yeah, the glimpse of athleticism is rare, it is special. I like his mental right now, where he is at mentally. You know, we all see what goes on out here in practice but then we take it to walk through inside (and) he is, so laser focused and understanding from (Offensive Line Coach Andy) Heck on maybe there’s a mistake or a mental where his assignment wise, he doesn’t go to the right spot. So, we repeat it and go through it. He cannot have enough of those. Physically, he is super talented. It’s the mental side, and it is the communication part with the left guard and the rest of the O-line, but I really like where he is at, and he is a true pro right now and this is just the beginning.”

<a>Q</a>: Is this wide receiver group as good as any group you’ve had?

NAGY:&nbsp;“Yeah, for me – and not to take anything away from any receivers that we’ve been with here or anywhere else for me, this collective group of wide receivers from top to bottom is very, extremely competitive and talented, and they’re competing, they’re pushing each other. I’ll bring up a guy that right now isn’t – I don’t want to take for granted, is JuJu Smith-Schuster. Unbelievable right now with what he is doing, as far as a leader in that room. Watching guys out here in walkthroughs, he is taking these young guys and using his experience and giving his knowledge to them, and it is exciting because he is a great player. So, from top down we have a lot of speed. The guys have knowledge, they’re smart, they play fast and tough. Now, it is just the timing of Pat (Patrick Mahomes) and we’re excited to take this aggressive mentality every day into practice and then take it into the season. We are ready and we are locked in.”

Q: On his chemistry with the other receivers.

BROWN:&nbsp;“I feel like we mesh together really well, on and off the field. We’re like brothers, so when we’re out there playing with each other, it’s a lot of fun.”
