SALINE COUNTY —Two adults and two teens were injured in an accident just before 4p.m. Tuesday in Saline County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2024 Buick Encore driven by&nbsp; Marvin Leroy&nbsp; Steenbock, 83, Longford,&nbsp;merged onto northbound U.S. 81 from westbound Interstate 70.

The SUV turned left in front of 2017&nbsp; USD 405 Lyons school bus&nbsp; transporting the girls high school basketball team and driven by Lelisa Dawn&nbsp;  Gilbert, 29, Chase. The bus struck the Buick SUV.

After impact the SUV came to rest across the center median and left shoulder. The bus struck the guardrail and came to rest in the center median.

EMS transported&nbsp;&nbsp;Steenbock&nbsp; Gilbert and two teens on the bus to Salina Regional Medical Center. The drivers were properly restrained, according to the KHP.&nbsp; There were 23 occupants on the school bus.

SALINE COUNTY—The Kansas Highway Patrol is investigating an injury accident involving a USD 405 Lyons school bus in Saline County.

Just after 4p.m. Tuesday, Salina Police notified the KHP&nbsp;of a crash involving a school bus and a passenger vehicle that occurred slightly north of the Cloverleaf at the Interstate 135 and I-70 interchange. Multiple troopers responded to the scene.

The driver of the school bus and a couple of high school students were transported as a precaution due to slight injuries, none of which are significant.

According to a statement from USD 405, " Our high school girls basketball bus was in an accident on their way to Minneapolis. There were no apparent major injuries, although a couple were transported to the hospital for minor injuries. Parents have been notified."

The driver of the passenger vehicle was transported to the hospital with elevated, but non-life-threatening injuries, according to Trooper Ben Gardner.

Eligible accidents: Any non-hit and run, non-personal injury motor vehicle accident that does not require towing, and does not involve alcohol or drugs.

Driver requirements: Exchange personal information with the other driver(s) involved or property owner.

Complete an Emergency Accident Reporting Plan accident report form as completely as possible and mail or deliver the completed report to the Salina Police Department within 48 hours.

Emergency Accident Reporting Plan forms are available at the Salina Police Department. They are also available on-line at https://www.salina-ks.gov/police by selecting the Emergency Accident Report Form.

The local media will be notified when the Emergency Accident Reporting Plan has ended.

 USD 306 went ahead and closed for today. Campus is closed with no activities. 

Salina USD 305 is canceled for Friday, January 10. This is due to new and expected snow accumulation on top of existing conditions. We appreciate everyone's patience as we work through continuing weather challenges.

Mid-November marks the peak of the deer rut season, a time when deer are more active as they search for mates, increasing the likelihood of vehicle collisions. Since November 11, the Saline County Sheriff’s Office has responded to 11 deer-related crashes, with only one resulting in minor injuries, according to Saline County Sheriff's Office Operations Captain Jim Hughes.

It is important not to swerve to avoid hitting a deer, as that can result in a more serious crash, potentially involving other vehicles or objects off the road.

Drivers are advised to reduce speed in areas where deer are commonly seen, especially at dawn and dusk, and to use high beams when appropriate to improve visibility.

Always wear your seatbelt and ensure children are in appropriate safety seats. Use bright headlights when there is no oncoming traffic, and scan for the reflective eyes of deer along the roadway.

A letter to the editor is a written way of talking to a newspaper, magazine, or other regularly printed publication. Letters to the editor are generally found in the first section of the newspaper, or towards the beginning of a magazine, or in the editorial page. They can take a position for or against an issue, or simply inform, or both. They can convince readers by using emotions, or facts, or emotions and facts combined. 

Letters to the editor are usually short and tight, rarely longer than 300 words.

Using a few carefully placed letters, you can generate plenty of community discussion. You can also keep an issue going by preventing it from disappearing from the public eye. You can stimulate the interest of the news media and create more coverage for the matters you're working on. You can also send a "good news" letter to bring recognition to people who deserve it or acknowledge the success of an effort.

The Salina League of Women Voters held its 2024 General Election Forum on Oct. 20 at 1:30 in the Watson Room at the Stiefel Theatre in Salina.

Kansas Highway Patrol It’s a busy time for farmers in Kansas with fall harvest underway. The Kansas Highway Patrol would like to remind motorists to use more caution and patience when traveling around farm trucks, tractors, combines, and other implements.

“As the busy farming season is underway, each traveler in Kansas needs to be more aware of increased farm implement and truck traffic,” said Captain Candice Breshears. “In Kansas, we have many trucks exiting and entering the roadways at any given time. Traveling around these vehicles requires extra caution.”

Most farm equipment is not designed to travel at highway speeds and may only travel 15-25 mph. Farm equipment is often wider than the lane of traffic, so extra room should be allowed when sharing the road. Caution should be practiced on all roads, but especially on busy rural roads with unmarked intersections.

Don’t assume the farmer knows you’re there.

Although most farmers regularly check for vehicles behind them, the majority of their focus must be spent looking ahead to stay on the road and watch for oncoming traffic. Implements are very loud, hindering their ability to hear your vehicle.

Don’t pass unless you can see clearly ahead of both your vehicle and the equipment you are passing. If there are curves or hills blocking your view, wait until you can clearly visualize the area you are passing in. You should not pass in a designated “No Passing Zone,” even if you are stuck behind a farm vehicle. Do not pass if you are within 100 feet of any intersection, railroad grade crossing, bridge, elevated structure, or tunnel.

When a farm vehicle pulls to the right side of the road, it does not mean it is turning right or allowing you to pass.

Due to the size of some farm equipment, the farmer must execute wide left turns, so allow it plenty of room and time to turn and remain aware of any potential driveway or field they may be turning into.

Don’t assume that a farmer can move aside to let you pass. Shoulders may be soft, wet, or steep, which can cause the farm vehicle to tip, or the shoulder may not support the weight of a heavy farm vehicle. They understand you are being delayed and will move over at the first safe location available.

Think of the slow-moving vehicle emblem as a warning to adjust your speed.

When you see the slow-moving vehicle emblem, immediately slow down. While the emblems are visible from a long distance, it is difficult to judge the speed at which you are closing in on the vehicle, especially at night.

When you are not focused solely on the road, you increase your chances of a collision, especially if you should come upon a slow-moving farm vehicle.

KHP: Extra caution needed on Kansas roads during harvest

Salina is set to welcome its first indoor pickleball facility, “Salina Smash,” slated to open in February. The premier indoor pickleball courts will be at 1820 South Ninth Street Unit B, next to Sky Trampoline Park.

Jason Hardy, the general manager of <a href="https://salinasmash.com/?fbclid=IwY2xjawIGERxleHRuA2FlbQIxMAABHewKfYv2QvxIRhC1YxVdIs8dRFslYLT86vHF4zrSjQWRe7lo9dqqQD1HDw_aem_Mdgp8T3JN8JzJxcPt7O-Kw">Salina Smash</a>, was inspired by pickleball’s popularity in Wichita and wanted to provide Salina residents with an indoor, year-round option for enjoying the sport.

"It is really big here in Wichita and I wanted to grow the sport in some of the smaller communities," Hardy said. "Even when you have nice weather outdoors, if you don't have good windscreens, then your ball is&nbsp; just going to go everywhere." Hardy noted that an indoor facility allows for year-round tournament play, whether to support a good cause or simply to enjoy one of the fastest-growing sports in the country.

The facility will feature four professional-level indoor courts with plans to expand.

"We will have one or two table tennis games, a dart board, a pool table to keep people busy as they wait for games," Hardy said. "We will have small food plates and a full-service bar."

Fifteen-time GRAMMY® Award-winner Ricky Skaggs and his acclaimed band, Kentucky Thunder, will take the stage at the Stiefel Theatre on Friday, April 4, at 7:30 p.m. Tickets start at $39 and go on sale Friday, January 31, at 10 a.m.

Ricky Skaggs describes his band, Kentucky Thunder, as a group of pickers that “totally amazes me in every show… and that, to me, outweighs any award we could ever win.” The all-star lineup includes Russ Carson (banjo), Jake Workman (lead guitar), Dennis Parker (baritone vocals, guitar), Gavin Kelso (bass), Mike Rogers (tenor vocals, rhythm guitar), and Billy Contreras (fiddle).

Born in Cordell, Kentucky, Ricky Skaggs began his journey in music at an early age, performing with bluegrass legends like Bill Monroe and Lester Flatt &amp; Earl Scruggs before joining Ralph Stanley’s Clinch Mountain Boys in 1971. His career spans decades and genres, from bluegrass to mainstream country, with 12 #1 hits, eight CMA Awards, and recognition as a driving force behind country music’s “new-traditionalist” movement in the 1980s.

In 1997, Skaggs returned to his bluegrass roots with the formation of Skaggs Family Records and the release of Bluegrass Rules!, earning a GRAMMY® and solidifying his influence on the genre. The Salina Area Chamber of Commerce, in association with the NetWork Kansas ECommunity Partnership, announces that the USD 305 Youth Entrepreneurship Challenge will take place in Salina this March as part of the 2024-2025 Youth Entrepreneurship Challenge (YEC) series.

The competition will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesday, March 4, at Salina Area Technical College, 2562 Centennial Road. 

The goal of the competition is to expose Kansas middle school and high school students to entrepreneurship.

“We are so excited to bring back the Youth Entrepreneurship Challenge to Salina this year. This competition empowers the next generation to dream boldly, innovate fearlessly, and build a future fueled by their own ideas,” Jaclyn Crow, Economic and Workforce Development Director of the Salina Area Chamber of Commerce said, “We welcome anyone in the community to stop by on March 4 and see all the wonderful businesses these kids have designed.”

Salina is one of many communities across Kansas hosting a locally organized event designed to give students hands-on entrepreneurship experience. The competition will involve students preparing a written business plan or executive summary, a “tradeshow” booth, and an elevator pitch or presentation.

The students will compete for $500 in prize money. Their work will be judged by local entrepreneurs, public-sector partners, teachers, or other adults. This is the tenth time Salina has brought this competition to its community.

“The YEC Series allows students to gain hands-on entrepreneurial experience and begin to deepen their connections to the local business community. Students are empowered through the process and begin to see entrepreneurship as a viable career option. The exponential growth of the YEC Series has reiterated that there is a hunger for youth entrepreneurship in Kansas,” says Bailee Henry, Manager, E-Community Programming.

During the 2023-2024 season, 1,159 students participated in 58 locally hosted entrepreneurship competitions as part of the YEC series. The 2024-2025 academic year marks the twelfth annual YEC Series coordinated by NetWork Kansas and the E-Community Partnership. 

The annual YEC series culminates in a statewide championship, where the top students from each local competition compete for prize money and other honors. The 2025 statewide championship will be held on April 17 at Kansas State University.

This competition is put on in partnership with NetWork Kansas, K-State Research and Extension, and K-State Center for the Advancement of Entrepreneurship.

Salina to host student entrepreneurship contest in March

<a href="https://salinatheatre.com/project/soprano/#1624046130752-e32e98fc-adb4">Theatre Salina</a> is gearing up to bring laughter and chaos to the stage with Lend Me a Soprano, a screwball comedy by acclaimed playwright Ken Ludwig. Based on Ludwig’s Tony Award-winning Lend Me a Tenor, this updated version puts women in leading roles, offering a fresh and hilarious twist on a classic farce.

Set in 1934, the story centers on Lucille Wiley, the fiery manager of the Cleveland Grand Opera Company, as she prepares for a one-night-only performance of Carmen featuring the world-class soprano Elena Firenzi. Chaos ensues when Elena arrives late, her jealous husband Pasquale causes an uproar, and Lucille’s unassuming but determined assistant, Jo, must step up to save the day.

Directed by John Hendrick, the talented cast includes:

The excitement of opening night for "Lend Me a Soprano, January 31, will extend beyond the stage with a special #MeetTheArtist event featuring the work of two Salina-based creatives, Anna Pauscher Morawitz and Rachel Miller.

Anna Pauscher Morawitz is an interdisciplinary artist who creates cyanotype prints and fiber art inspired by her garden and the natural world. She is also the mind behind Enna and the Snapdragons, a musical project that combines viola, ukulele, banjo, vocals, and even the saw to craft melodies inspired by traditional pop and everyday moments..

Rachel Miller is a Salina-based English teacher and artist who began her creative journey at the age of four. Passionate about both music and art, Miller pursued her talents through high school, eventually earning a vocal scholarship to Kansas Wesleyan University, where she continued to develop her artistry.

Theatre Salina debuts screwball comedy ‘Lend Me a Soprano' Friday

Salina Police Department (SPD) officers are investigating the theft of a vehicle reported on Sunday afternoon in the 600 block of North 11th Street.&nbsp;

According to Capt. James Feldman, officers were dispatched around 2 p.m. after a 29-year-old male resident reported his red 2010 Ford Fusion stolen.&nbsp;

"The victim reported he had jump-started his vehicle and left it running, and went to check on something. When he came back, the vehicle was missing," Feldman said.&nbsp;

A witness in the area reported seeing a white female wearing a floppy light pink beanie and a black coat near the scene. SPD officers believe they may have identified the suspect and are actively searching for the vehicle valued at $6,000.

The stolen vehicle has a Kansas license plate number 968AGP.

The Salina Public Library is proud to host “50 in 25,” an art exhibit presented by the Salina Central High School Visual Arts Department. This showcase features the talents of top junior and senior students, highlighting their creativity and artistic growth over the past year.

Under the guidance of instructor Larry Cullins, students have explored originality and variety through class assignments, independent projects, and their own artistic discoveries. Many participants are Advanced Placement Art students preparing to submit a portfolio of 15 pieces for potential college credit by May 1, 2025. 

Additionally, several promising juniors are exhibiting alongside their upperclassmen peers, demonstrating their own exceptional talent and vision.

The exhibit will be on display in the library's art gallery from Jan. 31 through March 14. The community is invited to a reception on Wednesday, Feb. 7, from 4 to 5:30 p.m., to meet the artists and view their artwork. Light refreshments will be served.

“We are looking forward to showcasing out-of-the-box work from these talented young artists,” said Cullins. “This exhibit offers a glimpse into their creativity and dedication, and we hope the community enjoys experiencing it as much as the students enjoyed creating it.”

&nbsp;Treasurer Steven Johnson urges all residents to participate in National Unclaimed Property Day on Saturday, February 1. This day is dedicated to raising awareness about the billions of dollars in unclaimed property state governments hold nationwide.

Unclaimed property, such as an abandoned bank account, an uncashed check, or forgotten insurance proceeds, can be found in nearly every community.

“On National Unclaimed Property Day, I encourage everyone to take a few moments to see if there are funds out there waiting to be claimed,” said Treasurer Johnson. “This day is a reminder that reuniting people with their money is a priority for my office. We want everyone to know that even small amounts can make a big difference.”

Unclaimed property typically includes assets from dormant bank accounts, unpaid wages, life insurance policies, utility refunds, safe deposit box contents, and more. Through the state’s unclaimed property program, Treasurer Johnson’s office works diligently to safeguard these funds until rightful owners step forward.

2. Provide your basic information — Searches only require minimal information, typically your name and county of residence.

3. If a match is found, submit a claim. Follow the instructions for providing proof of ownership and identification.

Since businesses and financial institutions report unclaimed property to the state, the amounts held can range from a few dollars to thousands. Many residents and businesses are surprised to discover they have missing or forgotten funds, so checking regularly is a wise practice.

“It only takes a few minutes to see if you or a family member might have unclaimed property,” Treasurer Johnson added. “This National Unclaimed Property Day, spread the word and help us ensure that people get back what is rightfully theirs.”

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Zeke Mayo scored 24 points, including a pair of clinching free throws with 3.1 seconds left, and No. 11 Kansas rallied to beat UCF 91-87 on Tuesday night to avoid its first back-to-back losses in Allen Fieldhouse in 36 years.

Hunter Dickinson added 24 points and Flory Bidunga had 10 points and 11 boards for the Jayhawks (15-5, 6-3 Big 12), who were coming off a double-overtime loss to sixth-ranked Houston.

The Knights (13-7, 4-5), who got 34 points from Keyshawn Hall and 19 from Darius Johnson, led by nine early in the second half before the Jayhawks used a 12-2 run to take their first lead since midway through the first half.

The Jayhawks were clinging to an 87-86 lead when KJ Adams, back after missing three games to a shoulder injury, made a pair of free throws with 4.6 seconds left. Kansas fouled Johnson at the other end and he made one of two foul shots, and Mayo then went to the line for the clinching free throws.

Kansas has not lost consecutive games at the Phog since dropping four straight under Roy Williams in 1989.

UCF lost to the Jayhawks by 51 points at home a couple of weeks ago. So the fact that the Knights were able to take Kansas to the wire in Allen Fieldhouse speaks volumes about their resiliency.

Kansas played without Dajuan Harris Jr., who hurt his ankle in practice. The Jayhawks could have used his experience, especially when their guards got into foul trouble. He's played in 159 games and had started the last 98 of them.

Adams only scored 12 points, but his free throws in the final seconds were crucial.

Kansas got 29 points from its bench. UCF got two.

UCF plays BYU on Saturday. Kansas heads to Baylor the same day.

LAWRENCE, Kan. -&nbsp;Kansas Athletics once again excelled in the classroom, as 81 student-athletes were named to the Fall 2024 Academic All-Big 12 Team, the conference announced this week.

The 81 honorees represent football, volleyball, soccer, and cross country. Of those recognized, 76 KU student-athletes earned Academic All-Big 12 First Team honors, which requires maintaining a 3.20 or higher grade point average (GPA) and participating in at least 20 percent of their team’s contests. Five student-athletes Tori Wingrove (women’s cross country), Tanner Talley (men’s cross country), Dylan Downing (football), Luke Hosford (football), and Caroline Castans (soccer) all earned a 4.0 GPA in the fall semester.

The football program contributed 37 Academic All-Big 12 selections, which tied for the most in the conference with Iowa State. Kansas Cross Country had 22 honorees, with 20 of those student-athletes earning first team recognition. Volleyball posted 10 total selections, with all 10 placing on the first team. Soccer also delivered an impressive showing, with 10 student-athletes recognized overall.

Kansas' success in earning academic honors in the Big 12 reflects its strong commitment to supporting student-athletes both on and off the field. KU student-athletes achieved a combined 3.45 GPA during the Fall 2024 semester, setting a new program record. Impressively, Jayhawk student-athletes have now set or tied a program GPA record in each of the last four semesters.

Kansas Earns 81 Academic All-Big 12 Selections and Sets New GPA Records for Fall 2024 Semester

LAWRENCE, KAN. –&nbsp;Kansas’ Jared Casey was named Second Team Academic All-America as selected by College Sports Communicators (CSC) on Tuesday. The team recognizes the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom.

Casey, from Plainville, Kansas, earns his first CSC Academic All-America honor with a 3.91 GPA in Sport Management at KU. Casey becomes the 15th Jayhawk in program history to earn the Academic All-America distinction, including the fifth in the past three seasons, joining Mason Fairchild (2023), Jalon Daniels (2022), Sam Burt (2022) and Earl Bostick Jr (2002).

Casey recently finished his senior season as a Jayhawk, earning First Team All-Big 12 honors in 2024. Casey was fifth on the team with 18 receptions for 203 yards and two touchdowns as a senior. He was previously named a semifinalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy, and he was on the Allstate Wuerffel Trophy Watch List.

To qualify for the Academic All-America teams, student-athletes must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.50, be at least a sophomore athletically and academically with a year in residence at the school and appear in 90 percent of all contests. Upon being named Academic All-District, individuals are placed on the All-America ballot.

Jared Casey Named to CSC Academic All-America Team

MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;–&nbsp;Kansas State senior offensive lineman&nbsp;Easton Kilty&nbsp;and senior defensive end&nbsp;Brendan Mott&nbsp;were honored for their work in the classroom on Tuesday as the duo was named to the 2024 Academic All-America football team as selected by the College Sports Communicators.

Kilty was named to the first team and Mott was named to the second team, and both players were honored for the first time in their careers. It is the seventh time in school history that the Wildcats had two players earn Academic All-America status in the same season, including the second-straight year after Cooper Beebe and Ben Sinnott were named to the first team in 2023.

A transfer from North Dakota, Kilty holds a 4.00 GPA in communication studies. He was an All-Big 12 Second Team honoree by the league’s coaches in addition to picking up votes for the Big 12 Offensive Lineman of the Year award. The Stratford, Wisconsin, native started all 13 games at left tackle, helping lead an offensive line unit that aided the Wildcats in setting school records in rushing yards per carry (6.08) and offensive yards per play (6.57) as they finished second and 13th nationally in those two categories, respectively. Protecting the quarterback’s blind side, Kilty helped K-State surrender only 13 sacks on the season – its fewest since 2000 – while the Wildcats’ 1.00 sacks allowed per game average ranked 10th in the nation.
