Salina Police are currently searching for a suspect who fled from an officer after a vehicle pursuit.

According to the Salina Police Department (SPD) on Thursday, July 17th at around 4:35 am, an officer observed a gold 2003 Hummer traveling at high speeds of 53 mph on a 30 mph zone around 1600 E. Republic. The officer pursued after the vehicle and attempted a traffic stop, but the driver did not comply.

The officer then chased after the driver for about 2 minutes throughout west of Salina. The driver eventually came to a stop in front of a home in the 500 block of S. 11th and allegedly, exited the Hummer and fled on foot. The officer went after the suspect on foot, but was unable to locate the suspect.

SPD is currently searching for the suspect and are following up with surveillance video they captured.

The suspect is identified as a man. No further description was given at this time.

A letter to the editor is a written way of talking to a newspaper, magazine, or other regularly printed publication. Letters to the editor are generally found in the first section of the newspaper, or towards the beginning of a magazine, or in the editorial page. They can take a position for or against an issue, or simply inform, or both. They can convince readers by using emotions, or facts, or emotions and facts combined. 

Letters to the editor are usually short and tight, rarely longer than 300 words.

Using a few carefully placed letters, you can generate plenty of community discussion. You can also keep an issue going by preventing it from disappearing from the public eye. You can stimulate the interest of the news media and create more coverage for the matters you're working on. Cope Notes is a text message-based service that provides individuals with randomly timed messages that contain anything from psychology facts to exercises and journaling prompts. Every subscriber’s text sequence is unique so that no two users ever receive the same message at the same time. 

Each <a href="https://copenotes.com/">Cope Notes</a> text must first undergo a thorough review process by a panel of peer-support advocates and mental health professionals, in order to ensure that the messages will have a positive effect on the subscriber’s health. The ultimate goal of the service is to train the brain to disrupt negative thoughts and promote a more positive pattern of thinking.

"We believe in the importance of mental health. We want to ensure our residents have access to the resources they need to stay healthy and thriving," said Saline County Health Officer Jason Tiller. "In my own personal experience with Cope Notes, I have found that the right messages seem to come at exactly the right time. It was been an uplifting experience for me, and I am thrilled we get to continue this service to our residents."

In 2022, Saline County initially offered the service for free to 300 residents. Because of the overwhelming response and in an effort to provide the service to more Saline County residents, the program is being offered at a 50 percent discount, according to information from the county.

Saline County continues to offer Cope Notes at 50-percent discount

Not seeing precipitation totals from your area after a rain or snow event? Consider becoming a CoCoRaHS volunteer.

"CoCoRaHS is an acronym for the Community Collaborative Rain, Hail and Snow Network. CoCoRaHS is a unique, non-profit, community-based network of volunteers of all ages and backgrounds working together to measure and map precipitation (rain, hail and snow). By using low-cost measurement tools, stressing training and education, and utilizing an interactive website, our aim is to provide the highest quality data for natural resource, education and research applications," the organization noted on its website.

After rain, hail, or snow storms, CoCoRaHS volunteers take precipitation measurements. Those totals are then recorded on the CoCoRaHS&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cocorahs.org/ViewData/StateDailyPrecipReports.aspx?state=KS">website</a>&nbsp;(Kansas reporting).

The precipitation totals are used by various organizations and individuals, including the National Weather Service, other meteorologists, hydrologists, emergency managers, insurance adjusters, farmers and ranchers, and, of course, Salina Post.

Precipitation reporting organization seeks local, area volunteers

What’s worse than a bogus charity? A bogus charity with a dishonest fundraiser. The FTC has sued and stopped dishonest charity fundraisers that&nbsp;<a href="https://consumer.ftc.gov/consumer-alerts/2020/09/spot-and-stop-dishonest-charity-fundraisers">called people</a>&nbsp;to get them to donate to fake charities. Some prey on your kindness and desire to help people impacted by weather emergencies or a disaster. But when you get a call from a charity fundraiser, how do you know the caller is telling you the truth?

Ask the caller specific questions.

What is the charity’s name, phone number, or address? Write these down so you can confirm them later. Keep in mind that many charity names sound alike, and that sham charities often use names that are sound and look like names of legitimate charities.

How much of your donation will go directly to the programs you want to support?

Will your donation be tax-deductible? Not every call seeking a donation is from a charity. Some calls might be from Political Action Committees or other groups where donations are not deductible. See more questions to ask here.

Resist the pressure to donate on the spot.

After you’ve listened to the caller, hang up the phone and think about what they said. Then, go online and do your own research:

Search for the organization’s name and phone number, plus the word “scam” or “complaint.” What you find might help you decide if you want to make that donation.

Look up the organization’s name and address. Does it show up? If it doesn’t, that could be a sign the caller was lying to you.

FTC: How to spot and stop dishonest charity fundraisers

TOPEKA&nbsp;– The start of a new school year is an expensive time for families. If you are struggling to pay for phone and internet services, there are programs to help you stay connected.

During Digital Connectivity and Lifeline Awareness Week, the Kansas Corporation Commission joins utility regulators nationwide in encouraging those in need of assistance to apply for Lifeline and the Affordable Connectivity Program.&nbsp; Both programs help low-income individuals and families stay connected so they can access health care, attend classes, find employment, and call for help in an emergency.

Lifeline provides federal and state discounts up to $17.02 per month on phone service (wireless or residential) and broadband. Seven million Americans currently benefit from the program, including approximately 30,000 Kansans.

The Federal Communication Commission’s Affordable Connectivity Plan&nbsp; provides a monthly internet service discount of up to $30 and a one-time device discount of up to $100 for a laptop, desktop computer or tablet. According to FCC data, more than 20 million U.S. households are currently enrolled, including approximately 120,000 in Kansas.

Eligibility&nbsp;is based on income&nbsp;(at or below 135% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines for Lifeline and at or below 200% for Affordable Connectivity Plan)&nbsp;or participation in certain assistance programs&nbsp;such as:

•&nbsp;&nbsp;Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) •&nbsp; Medicaid, Supplemental Security Income (SSI) •&nbsp; Federal Public Housing Assistance (FHPA) •&nbsp; Veterans Pensions &amp; Survivors Pension Benefit •&nbsp; Bureau of Indian Affairs General Assistance •&nbsp; Tribally Administered Temporary Assistance for Needy Families •&nbsp; Head Start Tribal Programs (income based) •&nbsp; Food Distribution Program on Tribal Lands&nbsp;&nbsp;

Anyone who qualifies for Lifeline is automatically eligible to participate in Affordable Connectivity Plan. Others may still qualify for the plan if they meet any of the following criteria:

• Are approved to receive benefits under the free and reduced-price school lunch program or the school breakfast program, including the&nbsp;USDA Community Eligibility Provision.&nbsp; • Received a Federal Pell Grant during the current award year.&nbsp; • Meet the eligibility criteria for a participating broadband provider’s existing low-income program.&nbsp;

Due to higher income maximums, Affordable Connectivity Plan  also has the potential to help families that may not qualify for other types of assistance. The maximum income for a family of four to qualify for the&nbsp; program is&nbsp;$60,000 per year compared to $40,500 for Lifeline. Both Lifeline and Affordable Connectivity Plan offer additional discounts for subscribers living on tribal lands.

<a href="https://www.grains.k-state.edu/academics/majors/bakery-science-management/">Bakery science</a>&nbsp;students at Kansas State University are now eligible for scholarship assistance through a gift from global bakery manufacturer and ingredient supplier Dawn Foods. The Dawn Foods Bakery Science Scholarship is open to undergraduate juniors or seniors and will provide two recipients each with a $5,000 scholarship annually, beginning with the 2025-2026 school year.

"Dawn's partnership with Kansas State University reflects a long-term investment in building strong industry-academic connections — fostering collaboration, innovation and a stronger pipeline of skilled talent for the future of baking," said Felisa Stockwell, vice president of North America people and global talent management at Dawn. "With this scholarship, we aim to invest in emerging talent and provide students with the opportunity to focus more fully on their academic and professional growth within bakery science."

The new scholarship is an extension of a longstanding partnership between Dawn Foods and K-State, the only university currently offering a four-year degree in bakery science and management. In addition to the scholarship, the collaboration delivers important opportunities for future baking industry professionals, including applied learning experiences in the form of internship opportunities at Dawn Foods' headquarters in Jackson, Michigan, or its other U.S. locations.

Dawn Foods invests in K-State bakery science students through new scholarship

Community members, partners, and stakeholders are invited to join a meaningful conversation about mental health in our region.

The Association of Community Mental Health Centers of Kansas and Central Kansas Mental Health Center will co-host a community mental health town hall at 5:30 pm on Monday, August 4. The event will take place at CKMHC’s Crossroads Building, 800 Elmhurst Blvd, in Salina.

This town hall offers an opportunity to bring voices together, exchange ideas, and explore how we can work collectively to support mental wellness and improve behavioral health services in our communities.

“At CKMHC, we are committed to increasing access and meeting people where they are,” said Glenna Phillips, CEO at CKMHC. “Community input is essential to shaping services that truly meet local needs.”

All are welcome, including those with lived experience, providers, educators, caregivers, health professionals, and anyone with an interest in improving mental health outcomes. Every year on&nbsp;July 24th, International Self-Care Day reminds us that caring for our health is not something we do once but it is something we can and&nbsp;should&nbsp;do 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Self-care is a vital part of living a healthy life and building a stronger, more resilient community.

The World Health Organization (WHO) defines self-care as the ability of individuals, families, and communities to promote health, prevent disease, and maintain well-being, either independently or with support from a healthcare provider (WHO, 2023). Self-care includes everything from making healthy lifestyle choices to managing minor ailments and seeking professional help when needed.

To help people understand how broad and empowering self-care can be, the International Self-Care Foundation has outlined Seven Pillars of Self-Care, which offer a well-rounded approach to improving and sustaining health.

The 7 Pillars of Self-Care and What They Are

1.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Health Literacy

Health literacy is the ability to understand how to access and use health information and it is the first step in self-care. People with strong health literacy are better able to make informed decisions about their health, such as reading labels, following medical instructions, or recognizing when to seek care. Yet, according to the CDC, nearly 9 out of 10 adults in the U.S. struggle with health literacy (CDC, 2022).

2.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Self-Awareness of Physical and Mental Condition

Self-awareness requires being tuned in to your body and mind, recognizing stress, fatigue, or unusual symptoms. This self-awareness allows you to take action before issues become more serious. Self-monitoring tools, like blood pressure cuffs or mood tracking apps, support this awareness and early intervention (Pascoe et al., 2017).

3.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Physical Activity

Movement is medicine. Just 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity per week, like walking or biking, can dramatically reduce the risk of chronic diseases and improve mood (CDC, 2022). It also enhances energy levels, immune function, and sleep quality. For individuals with diabetes, 30-45 minutes of exercise after the evening meal has been shown to help reduce blood sugar levels (Fardman et al., 2025).

4.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Healthy Eating

Nutrition is a cornerstone of long-term health. A balanced diet rich in vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and lean proteins supports digestion, heart health, and brain function. Reducing processed foods, added sugars, and sodium also lowers the risk of hypertension and diabetes (HHS, 2020). Some examples of processed foods include soda, energy drinks, margarine, and potato chips.

5.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Risk Avoidance or Mitigation

Self-care includes making choices that reduce health risks. This means not smoking, drinking responsibly (or not at all), using seatbelts, wearing sunscreen, and practicing safe sex. Risk reduction also includes mental health practices, such as setting boundaries or avoiding toxic stressors.

6.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Good Hygiene

Hygiene is not just about appearance—it is critical for disease prevention. Regular handwashing, dental care, and food safety habits protect against infection and support overall health, especially in community settings (WHO, 2023).

This pillar emphasizes the use of health products such as medications, supplements, or services, appropriately and only when necessary. This includes taking prescribed medications as directed and avoiding the unnecessary use of antibiotics or over-the-counter remedies.

Engaging in self-care is not just good for individuals; it is good for public health. Studies show that regular self-care improves results across physical and mental health, leading to reduced stress, lower risk of depression and anxiety, and a stronger social support system. When people are empowered to care for themselves, they are also less likely to need emergency or long-term care services, reducing strain on healthcare systems and giving healthcare professionals the opportunity to focus on more critical conditions that require timely or immediate intervention.

Saline County Health educator issues helpful information on 'self-care'

Jobseekers and employers searching for available talent is encouraged by the Kansas Department of Commerce, to take part in the upcoming “Hire a Veteran Day” virtual job fair, hosted by&nbsp;KANSASWORKS, from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, July 25.

This job fair is open to all jobseekers but primarily is aimed at veterans preparing to transition to civilian careers.

“Military veterans don’t just get the job done — they lead with purpose and strive for greatness in all things they do,”&nbsp;Lieutenant Governor and Secretary of Commerce David Toland said. “Their leadership, discipline and diverse skillsets make them invaluable to our workforce — and I encourage any transitioning servicemembers who are exploring their next chapter to attend and connect with our state’s outstanding employers.”

KANSASWORKS is hosting this special event to connect veterans with employers who recognize the value of military experience. Participating employers understand military skillsets and actively are seeking to hire those who have served.

The Virtual Job Fair format allows anyone searching for a position to fill out applications, chat live and interview virtually with participating employers.

The Virtual Statewide Job Fair portal features helpful information such as a jobseeker training video, a list of participating employers and channels for attendees to register and log in. Jobseekers are encouraged to dress professionally, as they might be asked to engage in an interview.

Registration open for virtual job fair that focuses on transitioning U.S. Veterans to civilian careers

Beginning Wednesday, July 16, 2025, Smoky Hill Construction will continue working along Glen Avenue from Marymount Road to Beechwood Road. Pavement will be removed, existing utilities will be located, and a new water main will be installed. Eastbound Glen Avenue will be closed to traffic from Marymount Road to Beechwood Road. 

Northbound Marymount Road will be reduced to one-lane through Glen Avenue. The intersection of Glen Avenue and Aullwood Road will be closed to traffic. Access to adjacent properties will be maintained. Work is expected to last three weeks and be completed by August 6, 2025, weather permitting.

Appropriate barriers will be in place to ensure the safety of workers. Motorists may encounter minor delays and are encouraged to find alternate routes.

City of Salina announces construction along Glen Avenue to Beechwood until August

In response to citizen concerns and in an effort to improve public safety for motorists, bicyclists, and pedestrians, the City of Salina has implemented traffic sign changes near the Magnolia Road bridge over the Smoky Hill River.

The Magnolia Road bridge, located between Markley Road and the levee, has been identified as functionally obsolete due to its narrow width of just 24 feet from curb to curb. While there have been no reported crashes on or near the bridge in the past five years, the bridge’s limited width and vehicle speeds have prompted safety concerns from area residents.

To address these concerns, the City extended the 40 mph speed limit from the levee to east of the bridge and installed "Narrow Bridge" warning signs with a 30 mph advisory speed plaque before the bridge to alert drivers to the reduced width.

These adjustments are intended to increase driver awareness and promote safer travel through the area.

In addition to these short-term improvements, the City is also planning a significant infrastructure project for this section of Magnolia Road. 

In 2027/2028, Magnolia Road from Markley Road to the levee—including the bridge—will be widened, and a new sidewalk will be added, creating a safer and more accessible corridor for all users

An 85-year old Cedarhurst Senior Living resident in Salina, has broke the internet with his passion and engagement of teaching others on how to 'save energy, money and reducing your carbon footprint.' 

Dr. George Potts, aka "Energy Green Grandpa" is originally from Wichita, a Youtube star and educator that teaches others about the topic of 'climate change' and the conservation of money and energy in an entertaining, yet engaging way. Dr. Potts uses fun and entertaining Youtube videos, to inform homeowners on how they can save energy, money and reduce the 'carbon footprint' (total amount of greenhouse gases released into the atmosphere from an individual).&nbsp;

Dr. Potts found his love for the biology/chemistry realm at an early age, where he spent quality time outside and interacting with nature. After he graduated high school, Potts attended Friends University (Wichita, KS) where he earned a Bachelor's in biological and chemical sciences in 1961. He then studied medicine at the University of Kansas School of Medicine until 1963. Furthermore, Potts went back to his hometown to earn a Master's in Science Education/Environmental Sciences (1970) at Wichita State University and where he also received his&nbsp;Secondary Education Certification back in 1964. After he received his teaching certification, he moved to Los Angeles where he landed his first teaching job as a biology, physics educator.

After his 3 year tenure in Los Angeles, he moved back to Wichita in 1967 where taught at Wichita North until '74 and then at Wichita South for a year. Moreover, Potts taught at&nbsp;Wichita Northeast Magnet High School from 1994-2000, after teaching at a few different Kansas universities.&nbsp;

With Potts' veteran teaching experience, he describes that this is something he has 'always wanted to do.'

"I have always enjoyed engaging with my students," said Potts. "Students learn by hands-on experiences and actively collecting and analyzing data. The best teachers are those who engage with their students."

Throughout Potts' time as an educator, he stated that he became 'concerned' of the fact that 'not many people are aware of the topic of climate change.' He described that he asked himself the question of, "how can I engage the public about informing them of climate change?"

After some time of reflection, Potts and with the help of his son Rolf Potts, thought of the idea to create a Youtube channel titled, "Energy Green Grandpa." His channel puts forth entertaining, yet helpful videos that benefit homeowners on how they can use their energy more efficiently and mitigate the amount of carbon dioxide molecules put in the earth's atmosphere.

"It seemed to me that not many people were aware of climate change," said Potts.

<a href="https://www.youtube.com/@EnergyGreenGrandpa-xp4zg">"Energy Green Grandpa"</a> consists of a wide range of about 5 minute long videos pertaining from, LED lightbulbs to renewable energy solutions. George handles research and scripting, while Rolf handles filming and editing.

“I love the research,” said George Potts. “It keeps me sharp and I’ve always been a reader, even as a little boy. I preferred a good book to playing outside.”

Not only does the "Energy Green Grandpa" help the public through Youtube, but he also is the program director of "Energy Green Community," which is designed for households/homeowners to become more efficient in their energy use. This program is meant to encourage homeowners to encourage others in a specific community to become "Energy Green" by applying the "22 Energy Saving Tips."

MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;– Three players –&nbsp;Brendan Hausen,&nbsp;Max Jones&nbsp;and&nbsp;David N’Guessan&nbsp;– were selected to the 2024-25 National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Honors Court in announcement by the organization on Thursday (July 17).
