A man was arrested after allegedly assaulting a woman inside a home.

According to the Salina Police Department on the early morning of the 4th of July, a man allegedly assaulted a woman inside a Salina home in the 2800 block of Argonne. Police stated that the woman aged 31, got into an argument with the man identified as 30-year old,&nbsp;Rogelio Lopez De Lara Sanchez.&nbsp;

Police stated that during the argument, the woman was 'punched in the head area&nbsp;multiple times' by Sanchez. It was also reported that Sanchez began 'strangling' her.&nbsp;

Officers arrived to the home at around 1:30 am and took Sanchez into custody without incident. Sanchez is facing requested charges of&nbsp;Aggravated Domestic Violence Battery and Domestic Violence Battery.

Police reported that they were called about the incident when children who live in the home, went to a neighbor’s house to seek assistance.

There was no report given by police on what type of medical assistance was provided for the victim.

A letter to the editor is a written way of talking to a newspaper, magazine, or other regularly printed publication. Letters to the editor are generally found in the first section of the newspaper, or towards the beginning of a magazine, or in the editorial page. They can take a position for or against an issue, or simply inform, or both. They can convince readers by using emotions, or facts, or emotions and facts combined. 

Letters to the editor are usually short and tight, rarely longer than 300 words.

Using a few carefully placed letters, you can generate plenty of community discussion. You can also keep an issue going by preventing it from disappearing from the public eye. You can stimulate the interest of the news media and create more coverage for the matters you're working on. You can also send a "good news" letter to bring recognition to people who deserve it or acknowledge the success of an effort.

The Salina League of Women Voters held its 2024 General Election Forum on Oct. 20 at 1:30 in the Watson Room at the Stiefel Theatre in Salina.

Cope Notes is a text message-based service that provides individuals with randomly timed messages that contain anything from psychology facts to exercises and journaling prompts. Every subscriber’s text sequence is unique so that no two users ever receive the same message at the same time. 

Each <a href="https://copenotes.com/">Cope Notes</a> text must first undergo a thorough review process by a panel of peer-support advocates and mental health professionals, in order to ensure that the messages will have a positive effect on the subscriber’s health. The ultimate goal of the service is to train the brain to disrupt negative thoughts and promote a more positive pattern of thinking.

"We believe in the importance of mental health. We want to ensure our residents have access to the resources they need to stay healthy and thriving," said Saline County Health Officer Jason Tiller. "In my own personal experience with Cope Notes, I have found that the right messages seem to come at exactly the right time. It was been an uplifting experience for me, and I am thrilled we get to continue this service to our residents."

In 2022, Saline County initially offered the service for free to 300 residents. Because of the overwhelming response and in an effort to provide the service to more Saline County residents, the program is being offered at a 50 percent discount, according to information from the county.

Saline County continues to offer Cope Notes at 50-percent discount

Not seeing precipitation totals from your area after a rain or snow event? Consider becoming a CoCoRaHS volunteer.

"CoCoRaHS is an acronym for the Community Collaborative Rain, Hail and Snow Network. CoCoRaHS is a unique, non-profit, community-based network of volunteers of all ages and backgrounds working together to measure and map precipitation (rain, hail and snow). By using low-cost measurement tools, stressing training and education, and utilizing an interactive website, our aim is to provide the highest quality data for natural resource, education and research applications," the organization noted on its website.

After rain, hail, or snow storms, CoCoRaHS volunteers take precipitation measurements. Those totals are then recorded on the CoCoRaHS&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cocorahs.org/ViewData/StateDailyPrecipReports.aspx?state=KS">website</a>&nbsp;(Kansas reporting).

The precipitation totals are used by various organizations and individuals, including the National Weather Service, other meteorologists, hydrologists, emergency managers, insurance adjusters, farmers and ranchers, and, of course, Salina Post.

Precipitation reporting organization seeks local, area volunteers

What’s worse than a bogus charity? A bogus charity with a dishonest fundraiser. The FTC has sued and stopped dishonest charity fundraisers that&nbsp;<a href="https://consumer.ftc.gov/consumer-alerts/2020/09/spot-and-stop-dishonest-charity-fundraisers">called people</a>&nbsp;to get them to donate to fake charities. Some prey on your kindness and desire to help people impacted by weather emergencies or a disaster. But when you get a call from a charity fundraiser, how do you know the caller is telling you the truth?

Ask the caller specific questions.

What is the charity’s name, phone number, or address? Write these down so you can confirm them later. Keep in mind that many charity names sound alike, and that sham charities often use names that are sound and look like names of legitimate charities.

How much of your donation will go directly to the programs you want to support?

Will your donation be tax-deductible? Not every call seeking a donation is from a charity. Some calls might be from Political Action Committees or other groups where donations are not deductible. See more questions to ask here.

Resist the pressure to donate on the spot.

After you’ve listened to the caller, hang up the phone and think about what they said. Then, go online and do your own research:

Search for the organization’s name and phone number, plus the word “scam” or “complaint.” What you find might help you decide if you want to make that donation.

Look up the organization’s name and address. Does it show up? If it doesn’t, that could be a sign the caller was lying to you.

FTC: How to spot and stop dishonest charity fundraisers

TOPEKA&nbsp;– The start of a new school year is an expensive time for families. If you are struggling to pay for phone and internet services, there are programs to help you stay connected.

During Digital Connectivity and Lifeline Awareness Week, the Kansas Corporation Commission joins utility regulators nationwide in encouraging those in need of assistance to apply for Lifeline and the Affordable Connectivity Program.&nbsp; Both programs help low-income individuals and families stay connected so they can access health care, attend classes, find employment, and call for help in an emergency.

Lifeline provides federal and state discounts up to $17.02 per month on phone service (wireless or residential) and broadband. Seven million Americans currently benefit from the program, including approximately 30,000 Kansans.

The Federal Communication Commission’s Affordable Connectivity Plan&nbsp; provides a monthly internet service discount of up to $30 and a one-time device discount of up to $100 for a laptop, desktop computer or tablet. According to FCC data, more than 20 million U.S. households are currently enrolled, including approximately 120,000 in Kansas.

Eligibility&nbsp;is based on income&nbsp;(at or below 135% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines for Lifeline and at or below 200% for Affordable Connectivity Plan)&nbsp;or participation in certain assistance programs&nbsp;such as:

•&nbsp;&nbsp;Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) •&nbsp; Medicaid, Supplemental Security Income (SSI) •&nbsp; Federal Public Housing Assistance (FHPA) •&nbsp; Veterans Pensions &amp; Survivors Pension Benefit •&nbsp; Bureau of Indian Affairs General Assistance •&nbsp; Tribally Administered Temporary Assistance for Needy Families •&nbsp; Head Start Tribal Programs (income based) •&nbsp; Food Distribution Program on Tribal Lands&nbsp;&nbsp;

Anyone who qualifies for Lifeline is automatically eligible to participate in Affordable Connectivity Plan. Others may still qualify for the plan if they meet any of the following criteria:

• Are approved to receive benefits under the free and reduced-price school lunch program or the school breakfast program, including the&nbsp;USDA Community Eligibility Provision.&nbsp; • Received a Federal Pell Grant during the current award year.&nbsp; • Meet the eligibility criteria for a participating broadband provider’s existing low-income program.&nbsp;

Due to higher income maximums, Affordable Connectivity Plan  also has the potential to help families that may not qualify for other types of assistance. The maximum income for a family of four to qualify for the&nbsp; program is&nbsp;$60,000 per year compared to $40,500 for Lifeline. Both Lifeline and Affordable Connectivity Plan offer additional discounts for subscribers living on tribal lands.

Plans available to help Kansans unable to pay for phone, internet services stay connected

According to Facebook post from Saline County, a testing of outdoor warning sirens will occur today (Monday, July 7th) at 4:00 PM.

Saline County states that sirens are meant to warn people who are outside to go indoors and get more information. The encourage other to be sure to have other ways to get weather alerts, like a weather app or a NOAA radio.

It’s a busy time for farmers in Kansas, with wheat harvest underway. The Kansas Highway Patrol would like to remind motorists to use more caution and patience when traveling around farm trucks, tractors, combines, and other implements.

“With wheat harvest season beginning, you’ll see heavy farm implement and truck traffic moving in and out of Kansas wheat fields and on to Kansas roadways. It’s important to remember that traveling around these vehicles requires extra caution. By taking your time and giving farm and heavy equipment plenty of room on the roadways, you can help ensure that yourself, your loved ones, and our Kansas farmers all make it home safely,” said Captain Stephen La Row, Kansas Highway Patrol.

Most farm equipment is not designed to travel at highway speeds and may only travel 15-25 mph. Farm equipment is often wider than the lane of traffic, so extra room should be allowed when sharing the road. Caution should be practiced on all roads, but especially on busy rural roads with unmarked intersections.

KHP reminds drivers to be safe on Kansas roads during harvest

A Colorado man was arrested after allegedly breaking a window of a convenience store with a hammer in Salina.

According to the Saline County Sheriff's Office on the 4th of July, a 38-year old man named Nathan Seltzer who is from Aurora, CO went to the Singh Travel Plaza (2124 N. Hedville Rd.) and allegedly 'broke a window with a hammer.' The convenience store was closed when he broke the window at around 7:00 pm and according to the Sheriff's Office, Seltzer was 'frustrated' that the store was closed.

Seltzer then walked away, but the owners of the&nbsp;convenience store were still inside when the crime occurred. The owners went out to confront him and one of them reportedly 'took the hammer' from Seltzer and stated they would call the police.&nbsp;

Sheriff Roger Soldan stated that Seltzer then 'pushed' the owner that had the hammer, retrieved it and threatened both of the owners as he was 'swinging the hammer' towards them.

Saline County deputies arrived to the scene shortly after the owners called about the incident. They then arrested Seltzer who was still in the area.

He is facing requested charges of Criminal Damage to Property, Battery and Aggravated Assault.

Colorado man arrested for breaking a convenience store's window in Salina

A woman was cited by the Sheriff's Office after allegedly shooting fireworks towards a grassfield and catching it on fire.

According to the Saline County Sheriff's Office on the 4th of July at around 6:00 pm, deputies arrived to a field that was fire in the area of the 3000 block of E. Cloud.

Allegedly, a 47-year old woman of Salina was driving when she pulled over in the area and shot fireworks towards the field, catching it on fire. She was cited for the incident.

Saline County Rural Fire District extinguished the fire and there were no reports of any injuries.

An unknown suspect allegedly stole over $5,000 worth of allergy medication from a store and is currently being sought out by Salina Police.

According to the Salina Police Department on Saturday, July 5th at around 4:45 pm, employees from Sam's Club (2919 Market Pl.) reported to police about a theft that occurred. Allegedly, at 4:00 pm a Hispanic man entered the store, 'picked up a 40-gallon tub and went to the allergy medicine aisle.

Furthermore, the man&nbsp;began putting numerous boxes of Zyrtec, Flonase, Allegra and Nasacort boxes in the tub. The man then walked out of the store and was last seen getting into a white Toyota 4-Runner, leaving the store.

It was estimated that over&nbsp;$5000 worth of allergy medications were stolen.

Melissa Herrera, Emergency Assistance Coordinator at Catholic Charities of Northern Kansas, has been selected as one of just 40 individuals nationwide to be featured in&nbsp;People of Hope: Faith-Filled Stories of Neighbors Helping Neighbors&nbsp;— a new traveling museum exhibit launched by Catholic Charities USA (CCUSA).

Out of more than 240 submissions from across the country, Herrera’s heartfelt video sharing her experience working with a local man named Michael, was chosen for professional recording later this month at CCUSA’s national headquarters in Alexandria, Virginia. The finished exhibit will launch in Spring 2026 and travel the United States for two and a half years.

Funded by a $5 million grant from Lilly Endowment Inc.,&nbsp;People of Hope&nbsp;will feature immersive, first-person stories that showcase the transformative power of Christian service. Housed in a retrofitted tractor trailer, the mobile museum will highlight sacred encounters of compassion and dignity from Catholic Charities staff and volunteers across the country. Visitors will also be invited to record their own stories of service, with a national advertising campaign to accompany the tour.

Herrera’s story centers on a man named Michael, who first walked through the doors of Catholic Charities in Salina three years ago. Homeless, struggling with addiction, and feeling hopeless, Michael found not only practical support but also the compassion and encouragement he needed to change his life.

“Something tugged at me, saying, ‘This guy right here, he needs help. And you’re going to help him,’” Herrera recalled. “I told Michael, ‘When you’re ready to change, you’re going to come back and see me.’”

She offered him a second chance — and he took it.

Because of Catholic Charities and generous community support, Michael received food, shelter, and help finding employment. With Herrera’s guidance, he reconnected with a former employer, moved into his own apartment, and eventually obtained identification documents that opened doors to even more stability. Today, he is working, housed, and proudly sober for more than two and a half years.

“You made me feel like I was a person,” Michael told Herrera. “You helped me be more confident about myself. Thank you for everything. Keep doing what you’re doing. You’re doing an awesome job helping the community.”

“This recognition is such a joy—not just for Melissa, but for all of us,” said Megan Robl, Executive Director of Catholic Charities of Northern Kansas. “We are so proud of Melissa and the way she shared her heart. Her story is a beautiful reflection of what it means to serve others with compassion and hope. It’s a reminder that the quiet, faithful work happening here in Northern Kansas matters. HUTCHINSON - Kansas stands to lose $3.897 billion in federal and state Medicaid funding under the Senate-approved version of the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” which will result in Kansas hospitals losing $2.65 billion in funding over 10 years.

Under the Senate plan, 13,000 Kansans are still projected to lose access to Medicaid for health insurance. Such losses would lead to higher uninsured rates and create more financial struggles for rural hospitals already on the brink of closure.

The Senate-approved bill includes more than $1.2 trillion in cuts to Medicaid when taking into account federal and state funding losses due to changes incorporated into the bill.

The Senate did include a $50 billion rural hospital relief fund to help offset funding losses, which would provide $811 million to Kansas hospitals. However, that still leaves hospitals billions short in Medicaid funding.

“We appreciate efforts to help our rural hospitals. However, it’s not enough,” said David Jordan, president and CEO of the United Methodist Health Ministry Fund. “It’s not a viable long-term solution. Our hospitals cannot afford to absorb billions of dollars in Medicaid cuts without cutting services and or possibly closing their doors. Our rural communities are aging and will only need more health care in the coming years – not less. This isn’t a sustainable solution to offsetting these losses, which will exacerbate the struggles our rural hospitals face.”

These results were recently released by Manatt Health, which conducted the analysis at the request of Kansas health philanthropies United Methodist Health Ministry Fund and REACH Healthcare Foundation. The two organizations wanted to better understand the financial and enrollment impacts of the latest bill, which implement deep cuts to Medicaid on top of reducing $300 billion from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).

Medicaid, the public health insurance program that covers more than 366,000 Kansans, is funded jointly by the state and federal government. It provides health insurance for low-income parents, children, seniors and people with disabilities. Adults who do not have children do not qualify for Medicaid in Kansas.

The Senate proposal will have a direct and disproportionate impact on rural communities, where higher rates of residents rely on Medicaid for health insurance. In Kansas, more than half of rural hospitals are already at risk of closure. According to Manatt’s model, Kansas hospitals would lose $1.608 billion in federal Medicaid funding alone over 10 years, in addition to another $1.042 in state Medicaid funding for a combined $2.65 billion in lost funding.

Kansas already has more hospitals at risk of closure than any other state in the country. Sixty-three rural hospitals are currently at risk, and 87% of Kansas rural hospitals are operating in the red. These hospitals struggle to survive with existing federal funding. Provisions in the bill would cause them to lose billions, making it even harder to stay open. When rural hospitals close, it removes job opportunities in addition to access to health care, creating a ripple effect in small communities.

"This bill is a serious threat to the health and well-being of thousands of Kansans,” said Brenda Sharpe, president and CEO of REACH Healthcare Foundation. “Cutting Medicaid funding and SNAP would weaken the safety net that holds our communities together, especially in rural communities where health care options are already limited. This would move us further from a future where everyone has the opportunity to thrive. We strongly urge the House to consider the long-term consequences of this bill and vote to protect the programs that sustain our communities.”

Manatt said these estimates are understated due to a lack of publicly available data. In addition, the model did not speculate how Kansas would respond if it were faced with steep losses in funding. Without an investment of new state dollars, the state may have to constrain base payments to providers, eliminate or narrow eligibility and benefits. Coverage losses due to the bill’s&nbsp;changes to the Affordable Care Act’s Health Insurance Marketplace also couldn’t be modeled; however, they will result in additional Kansans losing health insurance.

“This bill makes sweeping changes to programs that help Kansas families access health care and put food on their tables,” Jordan said. “If approved, these changes will be devastating for Kansas families.

KWU announces Spring 2025 Honor Roll recipients

KANSAS CITY, Mo.—Major League Baseball announced today the rosters for the 2025 All-Star Game, which will be played on Tuesday, July 15 at Truist Park in Atlanta, Ga. The American League team will feature two Royals players, including shortstop&nbsp;Bobby Witt Jr.&nbsp;and left-handed pitcher&nbsp;Kris Bubic, who were selected by the Commissioner’s Office.

This will mark Witt Jr.’s second straight All-Star Game, after he was elected by the players last season. The 25-year-old entered today with a Major League-most 30 doubles and tied for 2nd in the American League with 24 stolen bases, ranked 3rd with 104 hits and 44 extra-base hits and 5th with 173 total bases. Witt Jr. is just the second Royals shortstop to be named an All-Star multiple times, following three-time All-Star&nbsp;Fred Patek&nbsp;(1972, 1976, 1978).

Witt Jr.’s 30 doubles entering today are tied for the 2nd most by a Royals player before the All-Star break and trail only&nbsp;Mike Sweeney, who had 35 doubles before the break in 2001. In fact, Witt Jr. is the fourth Major League player to record at least 30 doubles, 20 stolen bases and 10 home runs before the All-Star break, following&nbsp;Ian Kinsler&nbsp;(2008),&nbsp;Alfonso Soriano&nbsp;(2002) and&nbsp;Chris Sabo&nbsp;(1988).

Witt Jr. entered today with 13 Outs Above Average on defense, 2nd in the American League at all positions.

Bubic, 27, is an All-Star for the first time this season thanks to a 2.36 ERA (27 ER in 103.0 IP) through 17 starts, which ranked 6th in the American League entering today, behind&nbsp;Hunter Brown&nbsp;(1.82),&nbsp;Max Fried&nbsp;(2.13),&nbsp;Jacob deGrom&nbsp;(2.13),&nbsp;Tarik Skubal&nbsp;(2.15) and&nbsp;Garrett Crochet&nbsp;(2.34).

Bubic’s 2025 season has been highlighted by, among other things, a banner month of May, in which he was named American League Pitcher of the Month. Bubic went 3-0 in 5 May starts with an American League-best 0.56 ERA (2 ER in 32.1 IP), which was the best mark in the month of May in Royals history (min. 5 starts) and was the 3rd best in any month, trailing only&nbsp;Zack Greinke’s&nbsp;0.50 ERA (2 ER in 36.0 IP) in April 2009 and Greinke’s 0.55 ERA (2 ER in 33.0 IP) in September 2009.

Bubic has recorded 11 quality starts (T-6th in the AL) in 17 outings and has induced 13 groundball double plays (T-4th in the AL). He has made 10 starts this season in which he’s recorded at least 6.0 innings and allowed 2 earned runs or fewer and has made 5 starts in which he’s completed 7.0 innings and allowed 1 run or fewer.

Bubic has allowed just 6 home runs in 103.0 innings for a 0.52 HR/9, 2nd best in the American League entering today.

Bobby Witt Jr. and Kris Bubic Selected to 2025 All-Star Game

PHOENIX (AP) — Michael Lorenzen struck out seven in seven dominant innings, Bobby Witt Jr. homered and the Kansas City Royals beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 4-0 on Sunday.

Lorenzen (5-8) kept the Diamondbacks off-balance all afternoon with a mix of mid-90s fastballs and changeups. He struck out the side in the first inning and didn’t allow a hit until Randal Grichuk’s two-out double in the fifth.

Lorenzen allowed two hits and walked one.

Witt hit a solo homer off Anthony DeSclafani (0-1) in the fifth inning to extend his team-record road hitting streak to 26 games. Salvador Perez also hit a solo homer in the Royals' fourth win in six games.

Arizona had three hits and didn't get a runner past second base to lose for the fourth time in five games.

Witt's homer with one out in the fifth — hit 12th of the season — was the first hit off DeSclafani. Perez followed with his 10th later in the inning.

John Rave chased DeSclafani with a run-scoring single in the fifth inning and Kyle Isbel followed with another to put Kansas City up 4-0.

DeSclafani allowed four runs on four hits and struck out six in four innings.

Witt's homer in the fifth was the first hit by either team.

Witt's road hitting streak ties for the second-longest in the last 10 years, behind the 32-game streak by the Dodgers' Trea Turner from 2021-22. Marcus Semien also had a hit in 26 straight road games for Toronto in 2021.

Kansas City LHP Noah Cameron (2-4, 2.56 ERA) pitches the opener of a three-game home series against Pittsburgh on Monday night. Arizona RHP Zac Gallen 6-9, 5.45) opens a four-game series at San Diego on Monday night.

⚾ Lorenzen dominant, Witt homers in Royals win over Diamondbacks

WICHITA, Kan. (July 6, 2025)—Ricardo Olivar ties the franchise individual RBI record with seven in a 15-13 Wichita Wind Surge win over the Tulsa Drillers at Equity Bank Park. After trailing 7-0 in the bottom of the first, the Wind Surge completed the biggest comeback in the history of the team to round out Independence Day Weekend.&nbsp;

The first inning saw 12 total runs on nine combined hits over 40 minutes. Tulsa put up seven tallies in the top of the first on four hits and an error as 10 men came to the plate to open the afternoon. The big swings of the frame were a two-RBI single to center from Kyle Nevin and a two-run blast to left field by Sean McLain.&nbsp;

Kala’i Rosario smoked a grand slam, his second salami of the season, down the left field line in the home half of the first. Jose Salas doubled to the wall in right field to score Ben Ross and change the score to 7-5 Drillers, though Tulsa got a run back in the top of the second on a sacrifice fly to center from Nevin.&nbsp;

Olivar crushed a game-tying three-run home run in the bottom of the second inning, and then Walker Jenkins singled to right for the lead in the next frame, with Ross scoring for the second time in the game, 9-8 Wichita.&nbsp;

The Drillers scored twice in each of the fifth and sixth innings on a respective John Rhodes two-run home run and RBI singles from Nevin and Ezequiel Pagan. A sac fly to center off the bat of Olivar made it a two-run game at 12-10 Tulsa through six full frames.&nbsp;

Four runs tied and gave the lead to the Wind Surge in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI single by Jenkins and a bases-clearing double from Olivar.&nbsp;

Runs alternated in the eighth on sacrifice flies to center from Nevin and Ross. Cole Percival shut the door in the ninth to secure a 15-13 Wichita winner, and his first save as a member of the Wind Surge. Joel Cesar also got the win to improve to 2-3, giving up an earned run on a hit with three strikeouts over two innings.&nbsp;

PHOENIX (AP) — Ryne Nelson retired the first 16 Kansas City batters and the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Royals 7-1 on Saturday to end a three-game losing streak.

Nelson (5-2), who moved into the rotation full-time when Corbin Burnes was sidelined for the season by elbow surgery, gave up four hits and one run over seven innings. The right-hander threw 86 pitches, walked none and struck out five.

Freddy Fermin’s sharp single to center with one out in the sixth ended Nelson’s perfect-game bid. Fermin scored on Bobby Witt Jr.'s two-out single.

Josh Naylor and Eugenio Suárez had RBI singles in the third off Michael Wacha (4-9), and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. doubled in two runs in the fifth for Arizona. Gurriel also tripled in the seventh off Taylor Clarke and scored on James McCann’s double.

Wacha lasted four-plus innings, giving up four hits and four runs. He threw 97 pitches, walking four and striking out four.

Randal Grichuk hit an&nbsp;<a href="https://x.com/Dbacks/status/1941628353775272246">inside-the-park homer</a>&nbsp;in the eighth. With a man on base, he hit a long fly to right-center that bounced away from outfielders Jac Caglianone and Kyle Isbel and into center field as Grichuk scored standing up for his fifth homer of the season.

Before the game, the Diamondbacks activated outfielder Corbin Carroll from the injured list. The 2023 National League Rookie of the Year, who has 20 homers and a major league-leading nine triples, was 0 for 5 in his return. He had been sidelined since June 18, when he sustained a chip fracture in his left wrist when he was hit by a pitch in Toronto.
