By SALINA POST The Greater Salina Community Foundation (GSCF) will host Salina’s annual Match Madness giving day on Thursday, March 13, 2025, marking the 14th consecutive year of the event.

On Match Madness, donations to any of the 104 participating charities will be matched up to 50%. The funds raised are directed to each charity’s permanent endowed fund held at the GSCF, ensuring a steady stream of income that eases the pressure of annual fundraising. Additionally, every gift to a nonprofit’s endowed fund will receive a proportional cash match—up to 50%—in the form of a cash grant available immediately for urgent needs. This year, private donors have contributed $300,000 in matching funds.

“This event is a win-win for everyone, and a great example of community collaboration. Donations of all sizes are pooled together to provide long-term support for our charities, and the match given can be used instantly by the charities to meet urgent needs,” said Jessica Martin, Executive Director of the GSCF.

Donors can contribute in one of three ways:

	•	In Person:Visit the Salina Fieldhouse, 140 N. 5th Street, between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m.

•	Online:Donate via&nbsp;<a href="http://www.matchmadnessgscf.org/">www.matchmadnessgscf.org</a>from midnight to 11:59 p.m.

	•	By Mail:Send donations postmarked on March 13 to GSCF, PO Box 2876, Salina, KS 67402-2876.

The event will feature a variety of activities, including:

	•	Bill Grevas Memorial Free Throw Contest:Sponsored by Bennington State Bank, nonprofit representatives will have one minute to shoot free throws for a chance to earn up to $100 in bonus cash for their organization. The contest runs from 10:30 a.m. until 5 p.m.

	•	BE Wealth Half-Court Shot for Charity:Nonprofit representatives will take a half-court shot, with the winner receiving an extra $1,000 for their organization. The competition starts at 5:30 p.m.

	•	Refreshments and Food:Enjoy coffee and treats from Ad Astra Books &amp; Coffee House throughout the day, along with food truck offerings from Paradise Eats and 805 Taco’s from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. outside the fieldhouse.

	•	Nonprofit Booths:These will be set up from 7 a.m. until 6 p.m.

In a unique community initiative, all Saline County fifth graders will participate in Match Madness for the third year in a row. Each student receives $10 to donate to the endowed fund of their favorite nonprofit—matched up to 50% by the Foundation. A local teacher emphasized the importance of the experience.

 “We can’t teach this. This is something that the students experience, and in our realm of the day anytime we can let a student have an experience outside of the classroom, it’s a home run!”

A letter to the editor is a written way of talking to a newspaper, magazine, or other regularly printed publication. Letters to the editor are generally found in the first section of the newspaper, or towards the beginning of a magazine, or in the editorial page. They can take a position for or against an issue, or simply inform, or both. They can convince readers by using emotions, or facts, or emotions and facts combined. 

Letters to the editor are usually short and tight, rarely longer than 300 words.

Using a few carefully placed letters, you can generate plenty of community discussion. You can also keep an issue going by preventing it from disappearing from the public eye. You can stimulate the interest of the news media and create more coverage for the matters you're working on. You can also send a "good news" letter to bring recognition to people who deserve it or acknowledge the success of an effort.

The Salina League of Women Voters held its 2024 General Election Forum on Oct. 20 at 1:30 in the Watson Room at the Stiefel Theatre in Salina.

Cope Notes is a text message-based service that provides individuals with randomly timed messages that contain anything from psychology facts to exercises and journaling prompts. Every subscriber’s text sequence is unique so that no two users ever receive the same message at the same time. 

Each <a href="https://copenotes.com/">Cope Notes</a> text must first undergo a thorough review process by a panel of peer-support advocates and mental health professionals, in order to ensure that the messages will have a positive effect on the subscriber’s health. The ultimate goal of the service is to train the brain to disrupt negative thoughts and promote a more positive pattern of thinking.

"We believe in the importance of mental health. We want to ensure our residents have access to the resources they need to stay healthy and thriving," said Saline County Health Officer Jason Tiller. "In my own personal experience with Cope Notes, I have found that the right messages seem to come at exactly the right time. It was been an uplifting experience for me, and I am thrilled we get to continue this service to our residents."

In 2022, Saline County initially offered the service for free to 300 residents. Because of the overwhelming response and in an effort to provide the service to more Saline County residents, the program is being offered at a 50 percent discount, according to information from the county.

Saline County continues to offer Cope Notes at 50-percent discount

Not seeing precipitation totals from your area after a rain or snow event? Consider becoming a CoCoRaHS volunteer.

"CoCoRaHS is an acronym for the Community Collaborative Rain, Hail and Snow Network. CoCoRaHS is a unique, non-profit, community-based network of volunteers of all ages and backgrounds working together to measure and map precipitation (rain, hail and snow). By using low-cost measurement tools, stressing training and education, and utilizing an interactive website, our aim is to provide the highest quality data for natural resource, education and research applications," the organization noted on its website.

After rain, hail, or snow storms, CoCoRaHS volunteers take precipitation measurements. Those totals are then recorded on the CoCoRaHS&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cocorahs.org/ViewData/StateDailyPrecipReports.aspx?state=KS">website</a>&nbsp;(Kansas reporting).

The precipitation totals are used by various organizations and individuals, including the National Weather Service, other meteorologists, hydrologists, emergency managers, insurance adjusters, farmers and ranchers, and, of course, Salina Post.

Precipitation reporting organization seeks local, area volunteers

What’s worse than a bogus charity? A bogus charity with a dishonest fundraiser. The FTC has sued and stopped dishonest charity fundraisers that&nbsp;<a href="https://consumer.ftc.gov/consumer-alerts/2020/09/spot-and-stop-dishonest-charity-fundraisers">called people</a>&nbsp;to get them to donate to fake charities. Some prey on your kindness and desire to help people impacted by weather emergencies or a disaster. But when you get a call from a charity fundraiser, how do you know the caller is telling you the truth?

Ask the caller specific questions.

What is the charity’s name, phone number, or address? Write these down so you can confirm them later. Keep in mind that many charity names sound alike, and that sham charities often use names that are sound and look like names of legitimate charities.

How much of your donation will go directly to the programs you want to support?

Will your donation be tax-deductible? Not every call seeking a donation is from a charity. Some calls might be from Political Action Committees or other groups where donations are not deductible. See more questions to ask here.

Resist the pressure to donate on the spot.

After you’ve listened to the caller, hang up the phone and think about what they said. Then, go online and do your own research:

Search for the organization’s name and phone number, plus the word “scam” or “complaint.” What you find might help you decide if you want to make that donation.

Look up the organization’s name and address. Does it show up? If it doesn’t, that could be a sign the caller was lying to you.

FTC: How to spot and stop dishonest charity fundraisers

TOPEKA&nbsp;– The start of a new school year is an expensive time for families. If you are struggling to pay for phone and internet services, there are programs to help you stay connected.

During Digital Connectivity and Lifeline Awareness Week, the Kansas Corporation Commission joins utility regulators nationwide in encouraging those in need of assistance to apply for Lifeline and the Affordable Connectivity Program.&nbsp; Both programs help low-income individuals and families stay connected so they can access health care, attend classes, find employment, and call for help in an emergency.

Lifeline provides federal and state discounts up to $17.02 per month on phone service (wireless or residential) and broadband. Seven million Americans currently benefit from the program, including approximately 30,000 Kansans.

The Federal Communication Commission’s Affordable Connectivity Plan&nbsp; provides a monthly internet service discount of up to $30 and a one-time device discount of up to $100 for a laptop, desktop computer or tablet. According to FCC data, more than 20 million U.S. households are currently enrolled, including approximately 120,000 in Kansas.

Eligibility&nbsp;is based on income&nbsp;(at or below 135% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines for Lifeline and at or below 200% for Affordable Connectivity Plan)&nbsp;or participation in certain assistance programs&nbsp;such as:

•&nbsp;&nbsp;Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) •&nbsp; Medicaid, Supplemental Security Income (SSI) •&nbsp; Federal Public Housing Assistance (FHPA) •&nbsp; Veterans Pensions &amp; Survivors Pension Benefit •&nbsp; Bureau of Indian Affairs General Assistance •&nbsp; Tribally Administered Temporary Assistance for Needy Families •&nbsp; Head Start Tribal Programs (income based) •&nbsp; Food Distribution Program on Tribal Lands&nbsp;&nbsp;

Anyone who qualifies for Lifeline is automatically eligible to participate in Affordable Connectivity Plan. Others may still qualify for the plan if they meet any of the following criteria:

• Are approved to receive benefits under the free and reduced-price school lunch program or the school breakfast program, including the&nbsp;USDA Community Eligibility Provision.&nbsp; • Received a Federal Pell Grant during the current award year.&nbsp; • Meet the eligibility criteria for a participating broadband provider’s existing low-income program.&nbsp;

Due to higher income maximums, Affordable Connectivity Plan  also has the potential to help families that may not qualify for other types of assistance. The maximum income for a family of four to qualify for the&nbsp; program is&nbsp;$60,000 per year compared to $40,500 for Lifeline. Both Lifeline and Affordable Connectivity Plan offer additional discounts for subscribers living on tribal lands.

The 2024 People’s Choice winner from the Salina Sculpture Tour, 'Going Home' by artist Sondra Johnson, will soon have a permanent home at the Saline County War Memorial in Sunset Park.

Salina city commissioners approved the sculpture’s placement during Monday’s City Commission meeting.

Crystal Hammerschmidt, Arts Services Coordinator, said the installation will help bring public art exposure to neighborhoods that don’t have as many artistic displays. She also noted that the sculpture would be elevated for better visibility.

According to Johnson, Going Home represents the final journey of a fallen American soldier. A date for the sculpture’s establishment has not yet been announced.

Peas, leaf lettuce, spinach, arugula, carrots, beets, radishes, and other cool-season crops are eager to start growing soon. These crops are typically direct-seeded in the garden and require a soil temperature of at least 40°F to germinate. With temperatures rising, that time is fast approaching. In Kansas, gardeners can plant peas and other cool-season crops anytime from early March through April, and the seeds will sprout as soon as the soil reaches the right temperature.

Peas are a joy to grow and even more fun to eat straight from the vine. When selecting pea seeds, it’s important to know what type you’re planting, as varieties differ in vine length and harvesting needs.

Check the details on seed packets carefully—some compact varieties grow just 12 to 15 inches tall, while others can reach 3 to 4 feet. Pea plants have weak stems, and as they grow and develop pods, they tend to flop over. To help support them, plant seeds 2 to 4 inches apart and keep rows about 6 inches apart, allowing plants to lean on each other. This natural support system is easier and more cost-effective than setting up a trellis.

Once peas germinate, it's a good idea to provide some protection. Rabbits and birds love tender pea shoots just as much as gardeners do, and they can quickly devastate young plants. Fencing or netting can help keep these hungry visitors at bay.

Peas mature by early to mid-June unless succession planting is used, in which case the harvest can extend until summer heat ends the growing season.

Garden (English) peas – These require shelling once mature and include Kansas favorites like ‘Little Marvel,’ ‘Green Arrow,’ ‘Frosty,’ ‘Knight,’ ‘Sparkle,’ and ‘Burpeeana.’

Snow peas – Valued for their thin, edible pods, these are harvested before the peas fully develop and are commonly used in salads and stir-fries. Recommended varieties include ‘Dwarf Grey Sugar,’ ‘Mammoth Sugar,’ and ‘Snow Green.’.

Sugar snap peas – A favorite among gardeners, these have thick, crunchy pods and can be eaten raw or cooked like green beans. They’re great for snacking right in the garden—kids love them too! Popular varieties include ‘Sugar Ann,’ ‘Sugar Bon,’ and ‘Sugar Snap.’

Once peas reach the ideal picking stage, harvesting can continue daily for several days or even weeks with successive plantings. Peas are best enjoyed fresh but can be stored in the refrigerator for a few days if cooled immediately. For the best quality, freeze or can them within hours of picking.

Peas are just one of many vegetables that thrive when direct-seeded in the garden. As we welcome the slow but steady arrival of spring, enjoy planting peas and other cool-season crops that will soon bring fresh flavors to your table.

Fathers in Saline County will have an opportunity to connect, learn, and gain valuable parenting insights at the “Fathers in Focus” event on Friday, April 4, 2025, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Webster Conference Center.

Hosted by the Saline County Health Department, the event aims to empower fathers by providing practical parenting strategies, resources for supporting their families, and guidance on navigating fatherhood and mental health.

Attendees will enjoy a complimentary dinner of beef brisket or pork ribs while engaging with other dads and learning from expert speakers. The evening will also feature door prizes and discussions on strengthening family connections.

The Salina City Commission will hold a special meeting on March 12, 2025, beginning at 2:30 p.m. in Room 107 of the City-County Building, 300 West Ash Street.

🎥Salina City Commission Special Meeting Agenda, March 12

Smoky Hill Construction will continue working along East Crawford Street. Beginning Thursday, March 13, 2025, East Crawford Street will be limited to one-lane traffic in the westbound lane between Roach Street and Lewis Street. The outside lane will be closed to locate utilities for the replacement of a water main. Access to adjacent properties will be maintained. This phase of the project is expected to last an additional two weeks and be completed by March 25, 2025, weather permitting.

Appropriate barriers will be in place to ensure the safety of workers. Motorists may encounter minor delays and are encouraged to avoid work zones when possible. Sidewalk closures are expected. Pedestrians are asked to follow the posted detours.

City of Salina announces road closure, delays expected

On Wednesday, the Abilene Cowboys embarked on a short 22-mile journey to Salina for the 4A State Basketball Tournament – a trip they've made four times in the past five seasons.

As the seven seed, the Cowboys faced a familiar foe in the opening round: the 2-seed Rock Creek Mustangs, a fellow NCKL League foe who had defeated them twice in the regular season.

Abilene started strong, scoring the first four points, but Rock Creek quickly responded, taking a two-point lead with a conventional three-point play and an outside three-pointer. 

The Cowboys tied the game at 6-6, but the Mustangs pulled ahead with an 11-2 run to close the quarter, capitalizing on a 14-5 rebounding advantage.

The Mustangs continued to dominate in the second quarter, outscoring Abilene 16-7 and taking a commanding 33-15 lead into halftime. Rock Creek's stifling defense limited Abilene to just two field goals and seven points in the second period while forcing four turnovers.

Abilene's defense improved in the third quarter, initially limiting Rock Creek's scoring, but, the Mustangs eventually found their rhythm, ending the period with a 9-3 run and extending their lead to 44-24.

Rock Creek opened the final quarter with a three-pointer, building their largest lead of the game at 23 points. This margin held for the remainder of the game, with the Mustangs ultimately winning 56-33.

Coley Burgess led the charge for Rock Creek, equalling his season average of 13 points in the first quarter alone on the way to a 21-point performance.

Burgess was the only Mustang to score in double figures but had seven different teammates chip in at least one bucket in the win.

On the Abilene side, Ian Crump (15) and Tyler Holloway (10) led the way but the rest of the team combined to score just eight points all game.

For the Cowboys, another strong campaign comes to a bittersweet end in Salina at 16-7, while the Mustangs advance to face Andale (20-3) in the state semifinals on Friday.

Cowboy campaign comes to close in state quarterfinals

One year ago, they stood at a crossroads.

The quartet could have bid basketball adieu and moved on with their lives. There was, however, the opportunity to continue playing basketball - the game they loved and had played for many years.

<a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/c6cfb2a6-96ac-4cb6-9c03-958f6beff4dd?elinkdata=21778">Alexis Dixon</a>, <a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/4ca9de41-53cd-4646-b00f-31382f1a8afc?elinkdata=21778">Angel Lee</a>, <a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/8548e9a0-e133-41b8-9600-287ef73cb59f?elinkdata=21778">LaMyah Ricks</a> and <a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/6391228b-422f-4907-a2f2-2f221bf2cdab?elinkdata=21778">Jill Stephens</a> separately made the same decision to continue playing for the Kansas Wesleyan women's team for a fifth and final season.

"It was important," coach <a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/88bf5b90-2a3c-4c44-9122-e23cdc80fdbd?elinkdata=21778">Ryan Showman</a> said. "On some level they all played a really important role in our success."

They joined four teammates who were entering their season senior years, but did not have a fifth-year option. The presence of eight seniors who have been with the same school for extended periods is a rarity in the emerging world of collegiate free agency.

"Things change, priorities change and goals change," Showman said, "but to get a group of eight seniors is really incredible. That was our strength. It was our leadership; it was our experience."

Their impact was immediate and profound. The Coyotes landed a berth in the NAIA Women's Championship by winning the Kansas Conference's regular season title with an 18-4 record. They play 10th-ranked MidAmerica Nazarene (27-2) in the First Round at 6 p.m. Friday in Olathe.

"We knew in the summertime coming in that this was our chance to make a run," Showman said. "There was that connection and that buy in on what was really important to them. You saw it every day from the preseason on. ... They held everybody together and this team stayed locked in on one goal.

Lee and Dixon were returning to Wesleyan to finish their degrees anyway - Lee in nursing and Dixon a fitness and wellness major.

Ricks and Stephens decisions were a bit more complicated. Each had earned their degrees but had to be accepted into graduate school to continue playing. They succeeded and are in KWU's (Master of Business Administration) program.

"Angel and Alexis still had school to finish so that helped their decision," Showman said. "But I know their choice to come to Kansas Wesleyan when they transferred was tied to being able to play that fifth year.

"LaMyah and Jill didn't have to come back. They could have gone on with their lives, they could have joined their professional fields and started making a name for themselves there. But they wanted to come back to help us win a championship and be part of that team that got us back (to the NAIA tournament)."

Ricks is a standout four-year starter at point guard and was a First Team All-KCAC and All-Defensive Team selection this season. She averages a team-best 12.0 points along with 5.0 rebounds and 2.4 assists.

"All of us deciding to come back was really big for the team and just knowing the potential we had, I knew it'd be a really good year," she said. "We have a very similar team from last year, but this year we put the puzzle pieces together and we played really well together. We trust one another and for sure just refusing to lose."

Ricks said her focus is on the here and now in terms of her playing career.

"I try not to think about it, but it is in the back of my mind a lot of the time," she said. "It's kind of a bittersweet moment but it is winding down for sure."

Stephens transferred from Independence Community College three years ago and averages 9.7 points and 3.3 rebounds off the bench. She's the team's best 3-point shooter (69 of 154, 44.8 percent) and is shooting an uncanny 92.4 percent from the free throw line (61 of 66).

Stephens, who was named All-KCAC Honorable Mention, has worn a large brace on her right shoulder all season after suffering a dislocation and torn labrum during a preseason practice session.

"I practice with it every day and it's become part of my body, so I feel more comfortable," she said.
