SHAWNEE COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating two suspects on multiple charges after an arrest.

Just before 3a.m. August 10, a K9 Unit conducted a traffic stop on a 2002 gold Ford Ranger with an expired registration in the 1600 block of NW Topeka Boulevard, according to Deputy Abigail Christian.

The driver 37-year-old&nbsp;Christopher D. Kittle  and passenger 27-year-old Ashley Dixon both of Topeka had warrants for their arrests. During the investigation, the K9 was utilized and illegal narcotics were located.

Deputies arrested them. Dixon had three warrants for her arrest, according Christian. Kittle had a felony warrant for his arrest and was booked on requested charges that included&nbsp; possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia, operating a vehicle without a valid driver’s license and operating a vehicle with an expired registration.

Nevertheless, those publications as well as other media are filled with even more advertising, futuristic calls to utilize more computers in the classroom, continuing messages similar to “you can’t teach tomorrow’s students with today’s technology.” The educational technology complex that predicted handheld screens would end all need of printed books by 2015 and end brick-and-mortar schools long before now. In his last days in office, President Eisenhower warned of the dangers of the “military industrial complex.” If he were alive today, he might very well add the “education technology complex.”

The dangers of replacing proven effective teaching and printed books with on-screen methodology have long been detailed by a series of academic books summarizing the problems with digital screen formats: “Mind Over Machine: The Power of Human Intuition and Expertise in the Era of the Computer by Hubert and Stuart Dreyfus (1986); “Failure to Connect: How Computers Affect Our Children’s Minds—and What We Can Do About it” by Jane Healy (1998); “Oversold and Underused: Computers in the Classroom” by Larry Cuban (2001); “The Flickering Mind: The False Promise of Technology in the Classroom and How Learning Can Be Saved” by Todd Oppenheimer (2003); “What the Internet Is Doing to Our Brains” by Nicholas Carr (2010); “Mindless: Why Smarter Machines are Making Dumber Humans” by Simon Head (2014) and many others.

Four decades of research has been conducted. A meta-analysis is an overall analysis of the many published research articles in a field, and a total of three meta-analyses have been conducted: “Reading on Paper and Digitally: What the Past Decades of Empirical Research Reveal” by Singer and Alexander, The Journal of Experimental Education, 85: 155-172 (2016); “Don't Throw Away Your Printed Books: A Meta-analysis on the Effects of Reading Media on Reading Comprehension” by Delgado et al., Educational Research Review, 25: 23-38 (2018); and “Reading from Paper Compared to Screens: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis” by Clinton in Journal of Research in Reading 42(2): 288-324 (2019). All found comprehension and distraction problems with screen reading that the industry has never addressed. And now these last years of pandemic have provided a massive field test confirming face-to-face teaching and reading printed books is superior for the majority of students.

At the university level many publishers have faced the fact that they only make money on a new printed textbook the first semester it is released. The used book market provides students with the print that they overwhelmingly prefer. One strategy was to publish new editions each few years despite such updates not being needed. Then many publishers offered the texts slightly cheaper but only online and with access suspended at the end of the semester. Students printed it off in order to do “deep reading” on paper. Now one publisher has speculated on using NFTs (non-fungible tokens) in order to claim some profit each time a book is sold, similar to a new trend for artwork.

Now we also face a most serious threat from libraries discarding printed books under the assumption that everything is now available in online archives, which is not true. This danger was clearly documented back in 2003 in the journal Science in “Going, Going, Gone: Lost Internet References” by Dellavalle et al. and updated in “Dozens of Scientific Journals Have Vanished From the Internet, and No One Preserved Them” by Brainard in Science September 8, 2020. Acid-free paper can last up to 500 years while digital archives—when they exist—must be migrated up every decade. &nbsp;

Following the pandemic, other countries have moved back to face-to-face teaching and students using printed books. Many schools in the U.S. have chosen to ignore these lessons.&nbsp;&nbsp;

ED. FRONTLINES: Pandemic showed print superior to screen

Kansas Wesleyan University, led by its Advancement office, closed the books on another outstanding fundraising year July 31. The university raised more than $9 million in cash, pledges and other gifts.

"We like to say, 'It's a great time to be a Coyote!' and it truly is," said Ken Oliver, executive vice president of advancement and university operations. "The generosity of our friends, supporters and alumni has not only helped take KWU to new heights but it has positioned the university for the future."

The 2021-22 success means that KWU's best fundraising years have been the past three. By most metrics, including money raised for the university's annual fund, this past year was the best in school history.

Thanks to the university's tremendous fundraising efforts, KWU's endowment now exceeds $45 million. It has nearly doubled in the past 10 years.

The financial growth has helped drive millions of dollars in campus improvements, record enrollment figures and numerous on-campus successes, including athletics, DECA and debate, and faculty honors and recognitions. The university is also making significant progress towards completion of a $4.5 million campaign for music, which will enable the renovation of KWU's centerpiece facility, Sams Chapel, as well as various other departmental spaces. Overall, KWU has surpassed $25 million raised during the last 38 months toward its $26 million Power of AND campaign.&nbsp;

"Our supporters have helped us accomplish so much these past few years," said Oliver. "We believe, however, thanks to the rock-solid foundation KWU is built on, that the best is yet to come. We look forward to 2022-23 being a year to remember!"

Richard L. Palmquist, 79, of Concordia, KS died on August 12 at Sunset Home. The facility held special meaning as he was born April 24, 1943 in the same building when it was Concordia Hospital and he worked as Director of Maintenance at Sunset Home as well. 

He was the eldest child of Robert and Frances (Peterson) Palmquist. Richard graduated from Concordia High School and attended Kansas State University.

He began farming with his Uncle Reuben Palmquist in 1961. In 1962, Richard completed basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, MO. He was a heavy equipment operator in Company A of the 81st Engineer Battalion. He served in the National Guard until August 1969.

On July 20, 1963, Richard married Linda Jean Basso. They had two children, Tim (Maureen) Palmquist of Portland, OR, and Tammy (Kevin) Mitchell, of Kenilworth, IL, and celebrated over 55 years of marriage. 

Richard farmed for over 30 years in rural Concordia. In 1993, they sold the farm and Richard worked for Big A Auto parts for a brief period before joining Sunset Home as the Director of Maintenance in 1995. He retired in May 2011.

Richard loved farming, hunting, fishing, and tinkering in his shop. He was a 4-H leader, active in Young Farmers and Ranchers, and The Baptist Church. On Christmas Eve, he enjoyed dressing up like Santa Claus and surprising friend’s children with candy and gifts. Richard was also a volunteer firefighter, and a Cloud County storm chaser.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and his wife Linda. 

Richard is survived by his sister Martha (Ron) Peterson of Omaha, NE, his two children and their spouses, four grandchildren Brett (Chau) Palmquist of Westminster, CA, Chad Palmquist of Portland, OR, Megan Palmquist of Portland, OR, and Lauren (Thanh) Orr of Gardner, KS; as well as nine great-grandchildren, Rocco, Brett, Isabella, Rhys, Kade, Harrison, Charlie, Abigail, and Emma.

The family has chosen cremation. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, September 10, 2022 at The Baptist Church, Concordia. Friends may sign the register book from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday, September 9, 2022 at Chaput-Buoy Funeral Home, Concordia.&nbsp; Burial of the cremains will be in the Gotland Cemetery, rural Concordia.

Memorial contributions may be given to The Baptist Church, or The Michael J. Fox Foundation in care of the funeral home.

Naida Jane (Bell) Sanders passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 6, 2022 at Chapman Valley Manor, where she had been a resident for the last four years. Naida was born in Osborne, KS on September 12, 1927, the daughter of Ruby and Alice Bell. 

She is survived by her daughters Randee (Steve) Werts of Prairie Village, KS and Sandra Sanders of Kansas City, MO; and also her nieces Susan (John) Moyer and Peggy (Mark) Roser of Junction City, Sherry Boyer of Topeka, KS, and Linda Filby-Fisher of Overland Park, KS. 

She was preceded in death by her beloved sisters and nephew, Nila Irene Filby in 2013, Norma Jean Horner in 2022, and Jeffrey Barton Filby in 2009. Naida and her family moved from Osborne to Junction City in 1942. She was the youngest of the three Bell sisters and graduated from JCHS in 1945.

She was married in 1947 and had two daughters. Being the mother of Randee and Sandy was central to Naida's life, as well as being one of the Bell sisters. Naida had many friends, among them members of two bridge clubs. She enjoyed making candy—butter almond toffee and peanut butter balls—as gifts on special occasions. She enjoyed books and crossword puzzles her entire life. She worked as secretary to the Chief of Staff 1st infantry Division and Garrison Commander, Ft. Riley for over 22 years, retiring in March of 1990. She served as a docent for the Fort Riley Historical Society, taking visitors on tours of the fort. She was active in her community, serving as co-chair of the Red Cross blood drives for many years. Naida was a member of the Friends of Dorothy Bramlage Library, Junction City Theater Guild, The Notables singing group, Geary County Historical Society, Geary County Hospital Auxiliary, and the National Assoc. of Retired Federal Employees. She was a life-long member of the First United Methodist Church in Junction City and loved singing with the choir.

A celebration of Naida's life will be held at the church on September 8, 2022 at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to JC First United Methodist Church and the Dorothy Bramlage Library.&nbsp;&nbsp;

SEDGWICK COUNTY— Two suspects accused in the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.legacy.com/us/obituaries/kansas/name/german-clerici-obituary?id=14196667">the death</a> of a Kansas man whose body was found in a culvert in 2010 made their first court appearance Thursday.

&nbsp;Kristopher Valadez, 32,&nbsp; Simpsonville, South Carolina is charged with 2nd degree murder, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney. Candace Valadez, 32 of Simpsonville, S. Carolina, is charged with aiding a felon. 

Both are former Wichita residents and are free on bond, according to the district attorney.&nbsp; Their next court hearing is August 22.&nbsp;

The couple were extradited from South Carolina to Kansas on Tuesday and booked into the Sedgwick County Jail.

In February of 2010, 19-year-old&nbsp;<a href="https://www.legacy.com/us/obituaries/kansas/name/german-clerici-obituary?id=14196667">German Clerici's </a>mother reported him missing after she had not heard from him since late January, according to a statement from the Butler County Sheriff's office.&nbsp; Clerici's car was also missing.

Several days later, investigators found <a href="https://www.legacy.com/us/obituaries/kansas/name/german-clerici-obituary?id=14196667">Clerici </a>shot to death in a culvert east of Augusta. Four months later, deputies found his car in the 3000 Block of East 21st North in Wichita.

In 2021, Butler County Sheriff Monty Hughey had investigators take a fresh look at the case.&nbsp; They discovered information that prompted investigators to conduct follow-up interviews and learned more information and new evidence in the case.&nbsp;

&nbsp;In July,&nbsp; investigators from the Butler County Sheriff's officials traveled to South Carolina. With the assistance of the Greenville South Carolina County Sheriff's Office and Wichita police, deputies arrested the couple. Both are former Wichita residents.

A multi-platinum-selling band is coming to the Stiefel Theatre in the fall.

Jane Gates, Stiefel Theatre executive director, announced today that Goo Goo Dolls are scheduled to perform in the Stiefel Theatre at 8 p.m. Nov. 11.

Darlyne Standley, 100, passed away August 10, 2022 at her farm in Courtland, Kansas.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; She was born on June 16, 1922, in Republic County, the daughter of Darrell George Standley and Eda (Sallman) Standley.&nbsp;

She was a lifelong resident of the rural Courtland area, except for a year during WW II when she moved to Orange, California, and worked in a factory for the war effort. &nbsp;Darlyne remained on the family farm and kept books for the Standley Partnership owned by Darlyne and her two brothers, Ralph and Frank.

She was preceded in death by her parents Darrell and Eda Standley, and her&nbsp;three brothers&nbsp; Raymond, Ralph, and Frank.

Survivors include her aunt Edith Sallman Linden, of Concordia,KS; &nbsp;her sister-in- law Elizabeth Standley of Jamestown, KS; eighteen first cousins, and numerous other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, August 17, 2022 at the Amana Lutheran Church, Scandia, Kansas with PMA Marilyn Dunstan officiating.

Interment will be at the Lutheran Cemetery, Scandia, Kansas.

Friends may call from 1 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Tuesday, August 16, 2022 at the Bachelor-Surber Funeral Home, Scandia, Kansas where the family will greet friends from 5 p.m. until 6 p.m. on Tuesday.&nbsp;

She made lots of friends throughout her years of working in the family businesses and had a smile for everyone.&nbsp; She retired in 1999 to provide child care for her grandsons.&nbsp; She enjoyed making donations to several charities throughout the years.&nbsp; She was an avid book reader and loved playing Yahtzee.

She loved her family thoroughly and loved the family get -ogethers.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sister Cheryl Taylor, and son Brian Beasley, Sr.

She is survived by her husband Don; her children LaLoni Coble (Ron), Tohnya Davis (Dennis), William Beasley, DeLynn Burdick, Michael Beasley and the grandson that she raised, Brian Beasley, Jr.; her stepchildren Dennis Stevenson (Rita) and Linda Gray (Bill); her siblings Leon Pfannenstiel, Carol White (Paul) and Jerome Pfannenstiel (Sharon); 14 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

JOHNSON COUNTY&nbsp;–&nbsp;The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) arrested an Edgerton man Wednesday morning following an investigation by the Northeast Child Victim Task Force (NECVTF) and the Collin County, Texas Sheriff’s Office, according to a media release from the KBI.

Just before 8a.m. Wednesday, agents from the NECVTF, assisted by the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office, conducted a search warrant at 207 E. 6th&nbsp;St. in Edgerton, Kansas. 

During the execution of the warrant,&nbsp; agents arrested Tony L. Hamer, 57, of Edgerton on a Texas warrant for suspected solicitation of prostitution of a person younger than 18-years-old.

Following the arrest, Hamer was booked into the Johnson County Jail. Extradition proceedings are expected.

WASHINGTON (AP) — An Iranian operative has been charged in a plot to murder former&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/john-bolton">U.S. national security adviser John Bolton</a>&nbsp;in presumed retaliation for a U.S. airstrike that killed the country’s most powerful general, offering $300,000 to “eliminate” the Trump administration official, the Justice Department said Wednesday.

Shahram Poursafi, identified by U.S. officials as a member of Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard, is currently wanted by the FBI on charges related to the murder-for-hire plot.

After the strike, Bolton, who by then had left his White House post, tweeted, “Hope this is the first step to regime change in Tehran.”The FBI believes that Poursafi was acting on behalf of the Revolutionary Guard when he sought to have Bolton killed, according to an affidavit unsealed Wednesday. Law enforcement officials located photographs of Poursafi in fatigues and with posters of Iran and Soleimani in the background to back up their allegation that he is a uniformed Revolutionary Guard member.The Justice Department traces the plot to the fall of 2021, when Poursafi, 45, an Iranian citizen who officials say has never visited the United States, asked an unidentified person he met through social media and who was living in the U.S. to take photographs of Bolton for a book he said he was writing.The person introduced Poursafi to an associate that could take the requested photos and videos. After the two connected, Poursafi encouraged that person, who was actually a confidential source working with the FBI, to hire someone to kill Bolton and offered to pay $300,000 for the job. Poursafi told the person that he wanted “the guy” to be purged or eliminated.Poursafi provided the person with Bolton’s office address, including the name and contact information for someone who worked in the office, the FBI affidavit says.“This was not an idle threat,” Assistant Attorney General Matthew Olsen, the Justice Department’s top national security official, said in a statement released by the department. “And this is not the first time we’ve uncovered brazen acts by Iran to exact revenge against individuals in the U.S.”In 2011, for instance, the FBI and Justice Department revealed an Iranian government plot to assassinate the Saudi ambassador to the U.S. while the ambassador was in the U.S.A spokesman for Iran’s foreign ministry, Nasser Kanaani, called the latest accusations baseless and politically motivated, state-run media reported.He said Iran “reserves the right to take any action within the framework of international law to defend the rights of the government and citizens of the Islamic Republic of Iran.”In his own statement, Bolton thanked the FBI and Justice Department for their work in developing the case and the Secret Service for providing protection.“While much cannot be said publicly right now, one point is indisputable: Iran’s rulers are liars, terrorists, and enemies of the United States,” he said.The unsealing of the complaint comes two days after negotiators seeking to revive&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/russia-ukraine-iran-dubai-nuclear-middle-east-45ce172ef6fbcf367c77b11ea8c045f5">the Iran nuclear accord</a>&nbsp;in Vienna closed on a “final text” of an agreement, with parties now consulting in their capitals on whether to agree to it it.The 2015 deal granted Iran sanctions relief in exchange for tight curbs on its atomic program. Since the U.S. withdrew from the agreement under President Donald Trump, Iran has sped up its nuclear enrichment program. Bolton has been among the most hawkish critics of the deal and efforts by the Biden administration to rejoin it.In his statement, Bolton said “Iran’s nuclear-weapons and terrorist activities are two sides of the same coin” and asserted that America re-entering the 2015 deal would be an “unparalleled self-inflicted wound, to ourselves and our closest Middle East allies.”The Justice Department described Poursafi as at-large abroad but did not elaborate on where he might be located. It is not clear when or if he will be taken into custody. He faces charges of using interstate commerce facilities in the commission of murder-for-hire and attempting to provide transnational support to a murder plot.The Revolutionary Guard is a paramilitary organization formed in the wake of Iran’s 1979 Islamic Revolution to defend its clerically overseen government. The Quds Force is the Guard’s expeditionary unit, responsible for operations abroad.Soleimani was the head of that force, and the Defense Department said at the time of the January 2020 strike that it killed him because he “was actively developing plans to attack American diplomats and service members in Iraq and throughout the region.”
