Police: Kansas man caught transporting homemade explosive

SHAWNEE COUNTY—Law enforcement are investigating a suspect for numerous allegations after a traffic stop.

Just before 3 a.m. Tuesday, police observed alleged traffic violations and initiated a traffic stop near SW Clontarf Street and SW Tara Avenue in Topeka, according to Police Lt. Jennifer Cross.

The driver, later identified as 36-year-old Justin K. Boston then fled.

A short time later, officers located Boston and determined that he had narcotics, a firearm and an improvised explosive device (IED).

TPD’s Bomb Squad was called to the scene. The device was rendered safe and then transported to an evidence storage location. Investigative assistance was provided by the local Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco Firearms and Explosives (ATF) office.

Officers arrested Boston and booked him into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on requested charges of Criminal Use Of Explosives, Distribute Opiate, opium, narcotic or certain stimulant, Possession of opiate, opium, narcotic or certain stimulant, Criminal use of weapons; Poss of firearm by person addicted/use contr, Flee or attempt to elude; five or more moving violations, Interference with LEO; unknown circumstance; felony, Possession of marijuana, Taxation; Drugs; No drug tax stamp for marijuana or cont substance and other traffic violations, according to Cross.
