MONTGOMERY COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas woman on multiple charges after a traffic stop.

Just after 4p.m. August 19, Sheriff's deputies conducted a vehicle stop at  14th and Walnut in Independence on a 2001 GMC Yukon for displaying a tag that belonged to a different vehicle, according to Sheriff Ron Wade.

&nbsp;Deputies identified the driver as 25-year-old Jade T.M. Ramirez-Gonzalez of Coffeyville, Kansas and learned she had an active federal warrant from the US Marshalls, stemming from a narcotics case. 

Deputies took her into custody for the warrant.&nbsp; Deputies also searched the vehicle and located marijuana. 

 Jade was transported to the Montgomery County Department of Corrections and upon arrival and as she was being booked it was discovered that she had brought methamphetamine into DOC. 

She remains in custody without bond on requested charges of no vehicle registration, no liability insurance, possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of marijuana and trafficking contraband into a correction facility.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Kan. woman wanted by U.S. Marshals captured during traffic stop

LAWRENCE –&nbsp;The No. 23 Kansas volleyball team moves to Salt Lake City, Utah for the Utah Classic hosted at the Jon M. Huntsman Center on Friday and Saturday.

The Jayhawks will play three matches in two days with the first match being on Friday at 1 p.m. CT against Utah Valley, followed by an 8 p.m. CT matchup against No. 22 Utah and ending with a match on Saturday at 2 p.m. CT against Loyola Marymount.

Sophomore Caroline Bien returns to Kansas after a stellar first season. The Overland Park native earned All-America Honorable Mention, Big 12 Freshman of the Year, AVCA Regional Freshman of the Year and a spot on the AVCA Midwest All-Region Team. Junior Kennedy Farris, super-seniors Rachel Langs and Anezka Szabo and sophomore Camryn Turner also return to the Jayhawks.

During the 2021-22 season, Bien led the Jayhawks in kills with 336 (.216) and kills per set, averaging 2.947. Also leading KU was Farris. The Lansing, Kansas native recorded 296 digs in 100 sets played, bumping her career total to 751 digs.

In her fifth season a Jayhawk, Langs has 532 kills as a middle blocker and played in all 30 matches during the 2021-22 campaign. Langs was second during the season in blocks for KU with 81.5 blocks and averaged 0.721 blocks per set.

Tournament play isn't over for the Jayhawks as they hit the road to West Point, N.Y. for the Black Knights Invitational hosted by Army. The tournament will consist of Temple, Army, UConn and Kansas. KU will play on Sept. 2 at 12:30 p.m. CT against Temple at the Gillis Field House. At 5 p.m. CT, the Jayhawks will play again on Sept. 2 to face off against host Army. Rounding out the Black Knights Invitational will be a match up against Kansas and UConn at 10 a.m. CT on Sept. 3.

On Sept. 17, Kansas will be retiring two jersey's at the conclusion of the Omaha vs. Kansas match at the Jayhawk Classic. Ainise Havili (2014-2017) and Kelsie Payne (2014-2017) will be honored with a jersey retirement ceremony where their jersey numbers will be displayed in the rafters of Horejsi Family Volleyball. No. 23 Jayhawks begin tournament play at Utah Classic

KANSAS CITY, Kan.—&nbsp;A week ago the Kansas City Monarchs (54-34) went to Canada and had their way with the Winnipeg Goldeyes (49-39) winning all three games. What a difference a week has made, as after two games of the four game series, the Goldeyes have a 2-0 series lead following a 7-5 win at Legends Field Tuesday night.

The Monarchs Mallex Smith started the game with a walk and stole a pair of bases and would come home on a Darnell Sweeney fielders’ choice to take a 1-0 lead after one. The game stayed that way a matter of minutes as Winnipeg got rolling in the second.

The Goldeyes borrowed a page from the Monarchs play book using the long ball off of Monarchs starter Jordan Martinson. Logan Hill walked and then came home on a two run homer from Kevin Lachance to make it 2-1 Winnipeg. The fish then got another walk from Deon Stafford Jr. followed by a fly out by Reggie Pruitt Jr for out number one. &nbsp;Raul Navarro then stepped to the plate and launched a home run to left to give Winnipeg a 4-1 lead. The Goldeyes added another run on an RBI single from Max Murphy and it was 5-1 in favor of Winnipeg.

The Monarchs would grab a run back in the top of the third on an RBI single from Darnell Sweeney off Goldeyes starter Alex Hart. Winnipeg came right back with an answer in the top of the fourth. Newly signed Monarch Jalen Miller provided Navarro with free transportation to first. A throwing error on a pickoff attempt and a wild pitch moved the runner to third. Max Murphy picked up his second RBI of the game and 82nd&nbsp;on the season on a sacrifice fly scoring Navarro.

On the mound neither starter would figure in the decision. In the pen, Miller would allow just one earned run in 4.2 innings of hitless ball in his Monarchs debut, while R.J. Martinez would allow one earned run in two innings to pick up the relief win.

With the Monarchs trailing 6-2 in the sixth Jacob Robson hit a solo home run to right off Martinez. It was his third game with at least one long ball and his sixth of the season. The Monarchs would load the bases in the seventh, but Zac Ryan struck out Sweeney to end the threat for “kay-see.”

In the top of the ninth the Goldeyes picked up a big insurance run on a double from Max Murphy off Jameson McGrane. David Washington would single to right and move Murphy to third. Jacob Rhinesmith would hit a sac fly to left to score Murphy and the lead was 7-3.

The Monarchs would battle back in the ninth to make it interesting. Pete Kozma singled and Alexis Olmeda doubled off lefty Tasker Strobel. Mallex Smith singled to load the bases for Kansas City. Ryan Grotjohn hit a fielder’s choice to score one run but force out Smith at second. Darnell Sweeney would single in Olmeda for his third RBI of the night to cut the lead to two runs. JACKSON COUNTY, Kan. —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Texas man on drug charges.

Just after 8p.m. Sunday, a sheriff’s deputy stopped a Honda Civic for allegedly speeding and displaying a fraudulent Texas temporary tag, according to Sheriff Tim Morse. 

The deputy arrested the driver, Daniel Avila-Lopez, 28, of Dallas, Texas, and booked him into the Jackson County Jail on requested charges of possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia, driving without a license and displaying an illegal registration.

January 24, 1932 ~ August 11, 2022 (age 90)

John William Woodruff was born on January 24, 1932, in Kansas City, Missouri, the son of John William and Eunice Mae (Tucker) Woodruff. He passed away at his home in Belleville on August 11, 2022, at the age of 90 years, 6 months and 18 days.

John graduated from El Dorado (Missouri) High School in 1950, and joined the Army in 1952. He was honorably discharged in 1954, and relocated to Belleville, Kansas, where he worked for the City of Belleville in the power plant, where he retired as the plant superintendent.

John was united in marriage to Betty Francis, and to this union one daughter was born, Betty Lynn. John was later remarried to Dorothy Jeanette Carlton on June 17, 1982.

John is preceded in death by his parents, his sister Sena Lou Watkins and her husband Raymond, daughter Betty Lynn Rott. 

He is survived by his grandchildren Monica Meyerhoff (Mark), Sarah Jones (Brian), Elizabeth Spellman (Scot), Andrea Jurgensmeyer (Bryan), son-in-law Robert Rott, other relatives and friends.

Memorial services will be Saturday, August 27, 2022, at 11:00 a.m., at Tibbetts-Fischer Funeral Home, with Pastor Craig Roberts officiating. Visitation with family greeting friends will be one hour prior to the services, at the funeral home.

Friends may sign John’s book on Friday, August 26, from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m., at the funeral home.

A private, family inurnment will occur at a later date, at the Kansas Veteran’s Cemetery, Fort Riley, Kansas.

Memorials are requested to the Golden Bell Haven, and may be sent in care of the funeral home.

He passed away at his home in Belleville on August 11, 2022, at the age of 90 years, 6 months and 18 days.John graduated from El Dorado (Missouri) High School in 1950, and joined the Army in 1952. He was honorably discharged in 1954, and relocated to Belleville, Kansas, where he worked for the City of Belleville in the power plant, where he retired as the plant superintendent.John was united in marriage to Betty Francis, and to this union one daughter was born, Betty Lynn. John was later remarried to Dorothy Jeanette Carlton on June 17, 1982.John is preceded in death by his parents, his sister Sena Lou Watkins and her husband Raymond, daughter Betty Lynn Rott. He is survived by his grandchildren Monica Meyerhoff (Mark), Sarah Jones (Brian), Elizabeth Spellman (Scot), Andrea Jurgensmeyer (Bryan), son-in-law Robert Rott, other relatives and friends.Memorial services will be Saturday, August 27, 2022, at 11:00 a.m., at Tibbetts-Fischer Funeral Home, with Pastor Craig Roberts officiating. SHAWNEE COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a shooting and have a suspect in custody.

Just before 10:30 p.m. Sunday, police were dispatched to the area of the 400 Block of NE Gordon in Topeka, in reference to a shooting, according to Lt. Donna Eubanks. First responders found a 70-year-old man at the scene suffering from a gunshot wound and he was transported to a hospital by American Medical Response. 

The two individuals involved are known to each other, according to Eubanks.

As a result of the investigation, Benjamin E. Folsom, 34, Topeka, was booked in to the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on requested charges of Aggravated Battery and Criminal possession of a firearm.

Karen was born in Salina, Kansas on September 17, 1939, a daughter of Evelyn (Hepner) Wamser and David Porter. Karen attended rural country grade school, Riley, Kansas and graduated Salina Central High School, Salina, Kansas in 1957. She was a lifelong member of Galva United Methodist Church serving on numerous committees and was involved in all aspect of church life. Through the years Karen worked as a school cook for Galva grade school, framer at the art gallery, McPherson, Kansas, and was an owner/perator over-the-road truck driver for many years.. Karen enjoyed doing art work, reading mystery books, bible studies, dancing and spending time with her friends and family. Karen Porter was united in marriage to Terry Lane Fay on Feb. 7, 1958 in Salina, Kansas. This union established their first home together in Salina, Kansas. This union was blessed with the birth of three children, two sons and a daughter, Timothy, Teia and Daniel. She is survived by her husband Terry Fay, of Inman, Kansas; her children Timothy Fay and his wife Cindy, of Inman, Kansas, Teia Janzen and her husband James, of Galva, Kansas and Daniel Fay and his wife Janet, of Inman, Kansas; her siblings Don Porter, of Gallatin, Missouri, Judy Hall and her husband Darrel, of Ocala, Florida, Rick Lyttel and his wife Jo Beth, of Las Vegas, Nevada, Judy Huff and her husband Lonnie, of Grove, Oklahoma and Debbie Creamer and her husband Lee, of Solon, Iowa. 'Country Jam in the Flint Hills' festival will benefit K-State's Johnson Cancer Research Center's colorectal cancer research.

Country music fans will head to Alma on Saturday evening to enjoy a concert with headliner, nationally known, <a href="https://www.facebook.com/CraigCampbelltv">Craig Campbell</a>, and secondary opener, <a href="https://www.facebook.com/travismarvin">Travis Marvin</a>&nbsp;of Ottawa, KS.&nbsp;

Opening for Marvin and Campbell is Indiana country music artist, <a href="https://www.facebook.com/JohnRyanMusic36">John Ryan</a>, who credits his interest in music to his mom.&nbsp;

"We talked about it a little bit, in there, and I honestly think my mom. So my mom always sang and my mom's a pretty good singer. She won't...she won't say it and she acts like she's not but she a...she's a good singer. We just to go to Karaoke bars, like in Florida, the kids could go in, we'd go down on vacation and she'd always sing 'Harper Valley PTA,' that was like her song. She'd always kill it, and I thought it was the coolest thing in the world. So I don't know, I never dreams of being a live musician. I just kind of did it as a hobby, and then I started playing shows and people are like 'Man, you sound pretty good.' and I'm like 'Well, thank you.' and I enjoyed writing the music and it's been kind of a snowball effect after that of just enjoying it. I love meeting new people and partying with new people. It's the best." John Ryan says.

Ryan made his way to Kansas for the first time to perform in Saturday's concert.

"First time in Kansas, ever, ever. I've never been, I've flown to Denver, I've been to Colorado and I've flown to Vegas twice, but I've never been in the 'in between states' if you will. It's beautiful, it's absolutely gorgeous out here." Ryan says.

Ryan says opening for such a well known artist is like a dream.

"Super exciting, we've been, I think we've had this in the books for about a year, now, right, it's been about a year or so and you know, I've...it's kind of been one of those things, it came up super quick, but you just throw it out there, 'yeah, I'm opening for Craig Campbell, you know, the guy that sings, 'Outskirts of Heaven'...it's really, really cool. It's an honor, I thank Bryan for having me and believing in me to come out and put on a good show for y'all. Hopefully we can do that." Ryan says.

hard line on privacy. Even kids, it contends, ought to be able to check 
out a book without someone looking over their shoulders.

hard line on privacy. Even kids, it contends, ought to be able to check 
out a book without someone looking over their shoulders.“All 
people, regardless of origin, age, background, or views, possess a right
 to privacy and confidentiality in their library use,” the group 
declares in its <a href="https://www.ala.org/advocacy/intfreedom/librarybill" target="_blank">Library Bill of Rights</a>.“It’s kind of Rule No. 1,” said Rachel Yoder, president of the <a href="https://www.ksschoollibrarians.org/" target="_blank">Kansas Association of School Librarians</a>. “You can’t have intellectual freedom without privacy. … But there’s an added twist to it, as a school librarian.”That twist? School library histories are part of a student’s educational record. Parents can see those records.The
 Goddard school district, west of Wichita, recently emailed families 
with step-by-step instructions for how to view their children’s library 
history, going back as many as 500 titles.Officials said the 
district’s library software has given parents online access to their 
children’s records for years. But recent, high-profile book challenges 
prompted the reminder.“Parents have always had access to review 
curriculum, to know what the books are that are in our libraries,” said 
district spokesman Dane Baxa. “This just gives them access to that 
information.”Last fall, the Goddard district <a href="https://www.kmuw.org/education/2021-11-09/goddard-school-district-orders-29-books-removed-from-circulation" target="_blank">removed more than two dozen library books from circulation</a> in school libraries after a parent complained about some titles. Administrators quickly reversed the decision after receiving <a href="https://www.kmuw.org/education/2021-11-10/goddard-school-district-reverses-decision-to-pull-library-books" target="_blank">national pushback from authors and free speech advocates</a>.But those school officials pledged to review the district’s vetting process for library materials.In the recent email to families, Goddard school librarians touted the district’s <a href="https://www.follettlearning.com/education-technology/library-management-system" target="_blank">Destiny Library management system</a> as a way to collaborate and partner with parents. The district also posts<a href="https://library.goddardusd.com/" target="_blank"> library catalogs for all Goddard schools</a> on its website.“We
 encourage you to periodically check your child’s Destiny Library 
account to spark conversations about books and what your child is 
reading,” the email said.The Destiny software is used by many Kansas school districts, including <a href="https://destiny.usd259.net/" target="_blank">Wichita</a>, <a href="https://tl.topekapublicschools.net/cms/one.aspx?portalid=9484689&amp;pageid=9532813" target="_blank">Topeka</a>, and <a href="https://destiny.smsd.org/" target="_blank">Shawnee Mission</a>.Follet School Solutions, which owns and distributes Destiny, announced plans earlier this year to <a href="https://librarytechnology.org/document/27189/follett-to-develop-tools-in-response-to-new-legislation-targeting-k-12-schools" target="_blank">beef up parental controls</a>,
 including a feature that would alert parents each time their child 
checked out a book and would let them limit their child’s access to 
materials they deemed inappropriate.Officials pointed to new <a href="https://www.tampabay.com/news/education/2022/07/22/floridas-new-parental-rights-law-means-more-paperwork-for-pasco-parents/" target="_blank">parents’ rights measures</a> in Florida, Texas and Georgia, where school districts are scrambling to comply with parental notification requirements.But the company <a href="https://www.publishersweekly.com/pw/by-topic/childrens/childrens-industry-news/article/88929-follett-reverses-course-on-parental-controls-for-customers-facing-censorship-legislation.html" target="_blank">walked that plan back</a>
 after an outcry from librarians, educators and authors, who said that 
those monitoring tools could invade the privacy of vulnerable students, 
especially those who identify as LGBTQ.Sara Moesel, assistant 
director of the Mulvane Public Library, said many students assume — 
incorrectly — that their school library history is confidential.Library
 workers in K-12 schools are bound by federal laws, such as the Family 
Educational Rights Act (FERPA), that those in public libraries might not
 be. Compare that to the <a href="https://mulvane.scklslibrary.info/about/policies/" target="_blank">Mulvane Public Library’s privacy policy</a>,
 which says patrons can’t access or use another person’s account without
 that person or the card being present. “This includes parental access 
to juvenile cards,” the policy says.“Unless the (school) 
librarians have been telling them all along, ‘Hey, your parents have 
access to these records. Just be aware,’ it just becomes a real risk for
 children who are in vulnerable situations,” she said.Moesel, a 
lesbian, said she experienced that fear as an adolescent when she read 
queer-themed books but didn’t want her family to know. She worries about
 children in similar situations.“Maybe I’m going to encounter 
verbal abuse at home. Maybe I’m going to risk homelessness,” she said. 
“There are real serious consequences to what’s essentially doxxing.”The free speech group PEN America has reported a massive spike in book bans and challenges nationwide. A <a href="https://pen.org/banned-in-the-usa/" target="_blank">report released in April</a> showed that the majority of books being targeted involve race, racism, sexual orientation or gender identity.In
 Kansas last school year, parents made a number of attempts to remove 
certain books from school libraries, including districts in <a href="https://www.kmuw.org/education/2022-02-07/salina-parents-want-lgbtq-memoir-removed-from-school-libraries" target="_blank">Salina</a>, <a href="https://www.kmuw.org/2022-03-08/derby-district-removes-novel-from-class-materials-and-middle-school-library-after-anonymous-complaint" target="_blank">Derby</a> and the <a href="https://www.kcur.org/education/2021-12-03/conservative-parents-are-trying-to-ban-books-in-kansas-city-schools-students-wont-let-them" target="_blank">Kansas City area</a>.Yoder,
 the Kansas Association of School Librarians president, said parents 
have always had the right to know about their child’s education and to 
weigh in on the curriculum. But the recent political battles around 
books have been disheartening to her.“It’s a hard time to be a 
school librarian. We’re trying to meet a lot of different needs,” she 
said. “As educators, we want to do our best to provide a safe and
