FORT PIERCE, Fla. (AP) — A man charged with&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-shooting-gunshots-florida-f62f8378d3a8ce7b2e99d6a8fb40aba9">trying to assassinate</a>&nbsp;Donald Trump while he played golf last year in South Florida wanted to ask potential jurors Monday on the first day of jury selection about their views on the war in Gaza and the talk of the U.S. acquiring Greenland, but a judge said those questions were irrelevant.

U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon earlier had signed off on&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-routh-assassination-attempt-ukraine-suspicions-florida-530098c668f283d8a38eb5dd5570f1b2">Ryan Routh’s</a>&nbsp;request to represent himself but said court-appointed attorneys needed to remain as standby counsel. Routh also wanted to ask jurors what they would do if they were driving and saw a turtle in the road.

The judge on Monday approved most of the other questions for jurors submitted by prosecutors.

Routh wore a gray sports coat, red tie with white stripes and khaki slacks, in accordance with Cannon's instructions that he be dressed in professional business attire, and he was partially shackled at the defense table. Three batches of 60 jurors arrived at the federal courtroom in Fort Pierce, Florida, on a staggered schedule Monday and spent the morning filling out questionnaires.

The court has blocked off four weeks for Routh's trial, but attorneys are expecting they’ll need less time.

Jury selection was expected to take three days in an effort to find 12 jurors and four alternates. Opening statements were scheduled to begin Thursday, and prosecutors will begin their case immediately after that.

That gunman had fired eight shots, with one bullet grazing Trump's ear, before being shot by a Secret Service counter sniper.

Prosecutors have said Routh methodically plotted to kill Trump for weeks before aiming a rifle through the shrubbery as Trump played golf on Sept. 15, 2024, at his West Palm Beach country club. A Secret Service agent spotted Routh before Trump came into view. Officials said Routh aimed his rifle at the agent, who opened fire, causing Routh to drop his weapon and flee without firing a shot.

Law enforcement obtained help from a witness who prosecutors said informed officers that he saw a person fleeing. The witness was then flown in a police helicopter to a nearby interstate where Routh was arrested, and the witnesses confirmed it was the person he had seen, prosecutors have said.

The judge last week unsealed the prosecutor's 33-page list of exhibits that could be introduced as evidence at the trial. It says prosecutors have photos of Routh holding the same model of semi-automatic rifle found at Trump's club.

In 2010, police searched a warehouse Routh owned and found more than 100 stolen items, from power tools and building supplies to kayaks and spa tubs. In both felony cases, judges gave Routh either probation or a suspended sentence.

In addition to the federal charges, Routh also has pleaded not guilty to state charges of terrorism and attempted murder.

Last year, Cannon sided with Trump’s lawyers who said the special counsel who filed the charges was illegally appointed by the U.S. Justice Department. Cannon’s ruling halted a criminal case that at the time it was filed was widely regarded as the most perilous of all the legal threats the president faced before he returned to office last January.

Cannon was a former federal prosecutor who was nominated to the bench by Trump in 2020.

Trump was uninjured, and there’s no evidence that Routh fired his weapon at the golf course. U.S. Secret Service agents stationed a few holes up from where Trump was playing golf noticed the muzzle of an AK-style rifle sticking through the shrubbery that lines the course, roughly 400 yards away. An agent fired, and the gunman dropped the rifle and fled in an SUV, leaving the firearm behind along with two backpacks, a scope used for aiming and a GoPro camera. He was later stopped by law enforcement in a neighboring county.

Trial begins for man accused of trying to assassinate Trump 

WYANDOTTE COUNTY –&nbsp;The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) shared an update on the July 5th death of Charles Adair at the Wyandotte County Detention Center.

In the final autopsy report, the coroner ruled Adair's cause of death as complications of mechanical asphyxia. Contributory factors were noted as hypertensive cardiovascular disease and hepatic cirrhosis due to chronic alcoholism. Adair's manner of death was determined to be homicide.&nbsp;

At approximately 8:30 p.m. on July 5, Charles L. Adair, 50, of Kansas City, Kansas, received medical care in the detention center’s infirmary for a pre-existing wound on his leg.

Preliminary information indicates that when personnel attempted to transfer him back to his cell, Adair caused a disturbance by yelling, refusing to listen to commands, and physically resisting. Multiple sheriff’s deputies responded and handcuffed Adair to gain compliance. They transported him to his cell, where several deputies placed him on the lower bunk. They began attempting to remove the handcuffs, while Adair continued to resist. They gained control, removed the cuffs, and left the cell.

Immediately after, at 8:37 p.m., medical staff were called to evaluate Adair who they found&nbsp; him unresponsive. Life-saving measures were initiated. EMS responded to the facility and continued medical intervention. Despite efforts, Adair was pronounced dead at 9:19 p.m.

This week the KBI concluded its investigation and presented findings to the Wyandotte County District Attorney's Office.&nbsp;

Southeast of Saline won their second-ever 2A state championship in 2024, capping off a perfect 13-0 season. The Trojans will be celebrating the 20th anniversary of their first-ever state title this year, which came back in 2005.

Minneapolis will be eager to get back on the right side of the .500 mark this season after finishing 2024 3-6.

According to the US National Weather Service (Wichita, KS), these storms will gradually increase from the west later tonight and persist through early to mid-evening on Friday. Pockets of heavy rainfall are likely, with a few isolated storms capable of dime to nickel size hail.

Salina has a 68% chance of showers and thunderstorms for tonight.

Another round of thunderstorms anticipated throughout Central Kansas tonight

JoAnn Loree Roy, 89, of Salina, KS, formerly of Stockton, KS, passed away on September 1, 2025, at Pinnacle Park in Salina. She was born on September 20, 1935, in a two-story farmhouse north of Plainville, KS, to Ellis and Ada Louise (Sites) Wolcott.&nbsp;

JoAnn grew up in Plainville and at a young age lost her mother when she passed away in 1938 after the birth of JoAnn’s sister, Janice. From then on, she was lovingly raised by her father and her aunts, Lenna McCune and Leona Bice. She graduated from Plainville High School in 1954.&nbsp;

On May 17, 1954, JoAnn married Clifford Roy at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Damar, KS. They first made their home in Plainville before moving to Albuquerque, NM, where Cliff worked in construction. His career later took them to Wichita, Manhattan, and Wilson, KS. In 1964, they settled in Smith Center and established their own business, Roy’s Crane and Dozer Service. More than two decades later, in 1987, they moved the business to Rooks County, where they purchased a farm and built their home. For over 50 years, JoAnn was a devoted partner in the business - managing the books, helping move equipment, and lending a hand wherever she was needed.&nbsp;

JoAnn had a passion for collecting, especially crocks, pink depression glass, oil lanterns, and antique furniture. She enjoyed gardening, attending auctions, refinishing antiques, reading, watching westerns, and listening to Elvis and all country music. She was deeply patriotic, always displaying the American flag and filling her home with Americana décor. JoAnn delighted in her family’s activities, from sporting events to square dancing with Cliff in their younger years. She had a special love for Christmas decorations and fourth of July fireworks, often sewing handmade flags for her grandchildren’s birthdays. Her grandchildren fondly remember donut runs to Alice’s Bakery during visits to Grandma’s house. Every family member also had a favorite meal or dish she prepared, with dumplings, fried chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy, pancakes, and her banana pudding dessert topping the list of most-loved recipes.&nbsp;

JoAnn is survived by her children, Doug Roy of Rose Hill, KS, Tracy (Claudia) Roy of Salina, KS, Corey (Gail) Roy of Norton, KS, Paris (Gerald) Bremer of Otterville, MO, and Gina (Barry) Brooks of Smith Center, KS; brother, Larry (Cynthia) Wolcott of Hutchinson, KS; nine grandchildren, Piper Simons, Sean (Krista) McIntire, Katharine (Ashton) Draper, Bethany (Spencer) Shirk, Christian Bremer, Megan Bremer, Paige Brooks, Grady (Lindsey) Brooks, and Louis (Payton) Frazier; 10 great-grandchildren, Kloie Simons, Dean Simons, Charlie McIntire, Griffin McIntire, Clara Draper, Calvin Draper, Eleanora Shirk, Mabel Shirk, Solomon Shirk, and Parker Frazier; and many nieces and nephews.&nbsp;

JoAnn is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Cliff; brother, Eddie (Leah) Wolcott; and sister, Janice (Manuel) Cortez.&nbsp;

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, September 5, 2025, at 2:00PM at the St. Thomas Catholic Church in Stockton. Burial will follow at the church cemetery. Visitation will be before the service on Friday, 11-1PM at the funeral home in Stockton.&nbsp;

In both felony cases, judges gave Routh either probation or a suspended sentence.In addition to the federal charges, Routh also has pleaded not guilty to state charges of terrorism and attempted murder.

TOUB:&nbsp;“Yeah, I mean, you know you think about Nikko (Remigio). I mean, he’s been our starter. For the last eight games that we’ve played, he’s been our guy. And I’ve gotten used to having him back there, and he just keeps getting better and he really had a great training camp. He’s become a leader for us, as far as his work ethic, and everything he’s about, and he’s a great teammate and he’s a good guy. And I’m happy he’s on the team.”

Q: What have you seen from Tyquan Thornton regarding kickoff returns?

TOUB:&nbsp;“I saw somebody that hits it fast, he’s (Tyquan Thornton) got great speed. He’s a willing blocker, so that’s important. I talked about that before how important that off returner is to be able to single block somebody. He’s going to have to block somebody. Nikko (Remigio) does that as well, if he gets the ball and Brashard (Smith) is still working on it and getting better and better each day. He (Brashard Smith) had a good game too, by the way, in that last game, so that was good to see with him. We talked about getting him a lot more touches and we did, and he showed up and it was good to see.”

Q: What have you seen from the Chargers return game?

TOUB:&nbsp;“Yeah, (Chargers WR) Derius Davis. He’s very good. Excellent dynamic. Not a real big guy but man, he is quick and fast and shifty, you know, and you have to be sound covering him. You can’t over commit one way or the other. He’ll cut it back on you. So, we got our hands full with him for sure, and we know those guys. We play them (Chargers) twice a year. A great coach, (Special Teams Coordinator Ryan) Ficken does a great job and the punter and the kicker, (Chargers K Cameron) Dicker the kicker, they’re both excellent. And the thing they have, they have a change at the long snapper (position), but it looks like they got a veteran, (Chargers LS Rick) Lovato. So, we played against him. He was at the Eagles last year, so we know him, but he’s an experienced guy, so they won’t miss a beat. They’re solid across the board.”

Q: On Ashton Gillotte and Omarr Norman-Lott.

SPAGNUOLO:&nbsp;“I thought he (Ashton Gillotte) played really good, too. He had some explosive plays, a tackle for a loss where he busted right through. It was slow-go at the beginning with both (of) those guys from the standpoint of learning the system. But Ashton (Gillotte) just gets better and better. He impresses guys in one-on-ones and the things that he’s doing, he’s real strong from the waist down. Omarr (Norman-Lott) is just kind of taking a little while to get going, you know? He makes strides and then he gets an injury here, and that’s been a tough thing for him to get through. So, we’ll see where we’re at by (the) time we get to gametime. But as we get going here in the course of the season, we’re going to rely on both of those guys.”

Q: When you go into an opener, do you have a sense of what you have defensively?

SPAGNUOLO:&nbsp;“It’s always a good question. Like right now, I was just doing something with Mitch (Holthus) in there, he just asked the same question. I’m a firm believer that you don’t fully know what you have, what you’re going to be, (and) what you’re going to be able to do from a defensive scheme standpoint until you’re in the first quarter of the season. I think offenses feel the same way. I mean, a lot of times when we are doing an offseason study on a team, sometimes I throw the first four games out, because everybody’s doing that. They’re trying to figure out what they have, and the pieces change every year, I mean, there are guys that we had last year that we don’t have anymore. We’ve got some new pieces, so it's going to take a little bit. I do think in these early games, the in-game adjustments are really important, and I think (that) the defensive staff we have does as good (of) a job at that as anybody, and then we get in there at halftime and decide to maybe do something different that we hadn’t planned on. I think all that’s really important.”

Q: What strategy do you use to build your season?

SPAGNUOLO:&nbsp;“Yeah, we’re building every week. I mean, listen, these early games, especially a divisional game, we’re probably not going to hold anything back because we’ve got to win the division games. So, there’s not a portion of that, that we’re trying to hide anything. We do a lot of self-scouting. We’ll get six weeks into it and have six games of our defense on film (and) try to do things differently – there’s a lot of that. But right now, it’s going in the game, and kind of figuring out as quick as you can what they’re trying to do to you and trying to combat that.”

Q: How do we know the deep ball is a priority this season?

NAGY:&nbsp;“I think it’s for sure the mindset. It started not just right now, but it started in OTAs. For him (Patrick Mahomes) it’s when you start looking at just - whether it’s a progression. I’ll use for example: If there’s something where there’s a post over the top or if there’s something as simple as a guy in the flat with an intermediate route, it’s the mindset of being able to know you might not throw the post, but you’re going to start there and it’s always been that way but I think the repetitive nature of where we’re at, it’s important and he’s had that since OTAs. We talk internally. We have some reminders for him and it’s good for him and those guys, they’re embracing it, and I think now we (have) got to just go out there and play within the play.”

Q: What has changed most in Patrick Mahomes since he entered the league?

NAGY:&nbsp;“Probably his (Patrick Mahomes) consistent drive to be great. And when I say that it sounds pretty easy to say but when you do the things that he has done early in his career, and he comes back the next year and wants to do more and work harder and be a greater leader. He truly leads by example. He’s not a guy that – he leads in every way possible. On the field, I think what’s happened is we’ve really done a good job – he’s done a good job at being able to step back where he’s at now in his career and say: ‘You know what, let’s get back to the basics. Let’s get back to fundamentals and let’s get back to progressions.’ And that’s where we’ve been challenged as a staff to make sure that we hold him accountable and he wants that. And so, like it’s an all-encompassing deal, but the leadership, the drive to be great every year and be better is just not normal and I think he does a great job with that.”

Q: On what makes him most eager about Isiah Pacheco having a full offseason.

NAGY:&nbsp;“Well, we’ve always said Nate (Taylor) that he’s (Isiah Pacheco) our energy guy. Whatever he does he brings it every single play. Last year we lost a little bit of that when he got hurt and then he came back, and I don’t know with his weight and everything with where exactly he was, but he came into this year in OTAs and then into training camp with a really good weight, playing fast. You see it on tape, you just – you see him finishing every single play. There’s this focus that he has right now. He's locked in. I think he’s very, very motivated. He felt what we felt last year and so, he’s a leader now. This is no longer his first or second year, he’s become a leader. We need him.”

Q:&nbsp;What has your anticipation been for this season?

JONES:&nbsp;“Getting through the process of training camp, first and foremost. Seeing what type of talent we got amongst the team and building from it. Building from it and preparing for the Chargers in Brazil. I think it’s sweet we get to play international (for the) first game of the season. I think that is a challenge for us as a team, a division rivalry. So, we got a lot of things to look forward to and also, we get to test where we’re at on this team.”

Q:&nbsp;What do you see from Justin Herbert as he approaches this season?

JONES:&nbsp;“You know, (Chargers QB) Justin Herbert is always improving. Players are always improving, so we understand he had a big arm. They got some new talent amongst the offensive line. The backfield set is different, (Chargers RB) Najee Harris (has) came over from Pittsburgh, who’s a heck of a (running) back, who I have great respect for. (Chargers WR) Keenan Allen is back, who I have a great amount of respect for. So, they have a lot of talent over there, and it’s going to be a challenge for us. And last year we didn’t get to play against (Chargers WR Ladd) McConkey – if I’m saying his name right, last year, so that’s a challenge for us also because they tend to get him the ball.”

THE TOP 51) Coming off a 38-35 come-from-behind win over North Dakota last week in its home opener, K-State now turns its attention to Army as the Black Knights visit Manhattan on Saturday evening inside Bill Snyder Family Stadium. The game, which kicks off at 6 p.m., will be shown on ESPN with Roy Philpott (play-by-play) and Louis Riddick (analyst) and Kris Budden (sideline) on the call.

2) Quarterback Avery Johnson is set to make his 17th-career start under center. The Wichita, Kansas, product enters the game with a 157.7 pass efficiency ranking and is 49-of-73 (67.1%) for 591 yards and five touchdowns on the year. He enters the week ranking 14th nationally in passing yards per game (295.5) and 16th nationally in completions per game (24.5).

3) K-State has seen 11 different players record catches this season, and wide receiver Jayce Brown is coming off his best game as a Wildcat. Brown had 12 catches for 109 yards and a touchdown, while Jaron Tibbs and Joe Jackson each hauled in TD receptions last week.&nbsp; Brown leads the team in receiving with 16 catches for 187 yards and three TDs, while Jerand Bradley has eight catches for 121 yards and a score.

4) In two games, K-State’s defense has held its opponents to an average of 2.9 yards per rush on 79 attempts and also has 16 tackles for loss and seven sacks, the latter of which ranks 24th nationally. 5) The Wildcats’ defensive backs have totaled 10 pass breakups through the first two weeks of the season. • On offense, the Kansans are quarterback Avery Johnson (Wichita), running back Dylan Edwards (Derby) and offensive linemen Taylor Poitier (Kansas City) and Sam Hecht (Shawnee).

• Defensively, the list includes defensive tackle Damian Ilalio (Manhattan), linebacker Des Purnell (Topeka) and defensive end Cody Stufflebean (McPherson).

• Kansas State played nine night games a year ago – going 6-3 in those contests – and the Wildcats begin the season with each of their first four games kicking off at 5 p.m. local time or later.

• The season opener against Iowa State kicked off at 5 p.m. (Irish Standard Time), while K-State’s first two home games each kick off at 6 p.m. (Central Time). Then, the Wildcats travel to face Arizona in a game that will kick off at 6 p.m. (Mountain Standard Time).

• Last season was the first time that K-State played nine night games during the regular season in the Big 12 era (1996).

• A proven winner with a championship history, Chris Klieman holds a 121-42 career record, as his 74.2% career winning percentage ranks fourth among current FBS coaches that have completed at least 10 seasons. He is also one of just 16 current Power 4 head coaches with at least 100 career victories.

• Klieman, who is 49-29 since arriving at K-State, has led the Cats to five victories over teams ranked in the top 10 of the AP Top 25, the most of any active Big 12 program since 2019.

• K-State earned four come-from-behind wins in 2024 when trailing in the fourth quarter – which tied for the second most in the country (Illinois, 5) – and the Cats added another one in 2025.

• The Wildcats’ four wins last season when trailing in the fourth quarter tied the school record originally set by the 2011 squad.

• At Tulane, a Dylan Edwards touchdown run and a Jack Fabris fumble return erased a 27-20 deficit in a 34-27 win.

• At Colorado, a 50-yard touchdown pass from Avery Johnson to Jayce Brown with 2:14 remaining swung a 28-24 deficit to a 31-28 victory in the Buffaloes’ lone home loss of the season.

• K-State trailed Kansas, 27-26, until Chris Tennant’s 51-yard field goal with 1:42 left earned the Wildcats a 29-27 win.

• The Wildcats recorded their largest bowl come-from-behind victory in the 2024 Rate Bowl as they trailed Rutgers by 17 points in the third quarter and by 12 points in the fourth quarter before a 44-41 victory.

• In last week’s home opener against North Dakota, the Wildcats trailed, 35-31, with 1:33 remaining and needed to go 81 yards for a touchdown. Avery Johnson connected with Joe Jackson on a six-yard touchdown pass with 0:42 left for the win. It was the first game-winning touchdown with less than 1:00 remaining in regulation since a Skylar Thompson-to-Isaiah Zuber pass on the final play of the game against Iowa State in 2017.

• K-State is the nation’s best in non-offensive touchdowns over the last 25-plus seasons as it has 135 since 1999, nine more than the next closest team (Alabama – 126) and 17 more than the next Big 12 program (Utah – 118).

• K-State recorded four non-offensive scores during the 2024 season, its most since also recording four in 2020.
