The 41st Salina Spring Poetry Series, sponsored and organized by Salina Arts &amp; Humanities, continues on Tuesday, April 22, with a reading by Luisa Muradyan.

The reading will begin at 7 p.m. at Red Fern Booksellers (106 S Santa Fe Ave). Admission will be $5 at the door and free for students with ID.

Traci Brimhall, Kansas Poet Laureate, curated this year’s series. Brimhall selected poets with a broad range of perspectives, who will share their work in Salina this April.

“Originally from Odesa, Ukraine, Luisa has lived in Kansas for most of her life. I knew Luisa’s poems before I was lucky enough to know her as a person, and on both the page and in person discovered she’s remarkably funny. Her poems defy so much of what I thought poems could do. Celebrities show up, pop culture is everywhere, and she can make you laugh and cry in the span of a page,” says Brimhall.

Luisa Muradyan to read in Salina Spring Poetry Series, April 22

SEDGWICK COUNTY — A Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office Detention Deputy suffered serious burns just before 7:30p.m. Monday after an inmate identified as 21-year-old James Edward Chavez launched a targeted attack inside the Sedgwick County Adult Detention Facility, according to a media release from the sheriff's department.

The incident happened while the deputy was speaking with inmates in a housing pod.&nbsp; Chavez obtained a pot of boiling water and threw it on the deputy, causing second and third-degree burns to the back part of his body.

Sedgwick County EMS transported the deputy to a local hospital, where he was admitted to the Burn Unit. The 30-year-old deputy who has served with the Sheriff’s Office for nearly two years, remains hospitalized but is expected to fully recover.

Chavez was originally booked into the detention facility in March 2024 on pending juvenile charges and later faced an additional charge for trafficking contraband into a correctional facility He has had 39 documented disciplinary incidents since entering the facility.

Following the attack, a charge of aggravated battery of a law enforcement officer has been added to Chavez’s current charges. Sheriff’s detectives are continuing the investigation and will present their findings to the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office for formal charging consideration.

Inmates have traditionally had access to hot water for preparing coffee, tea, and food items like Ramen noodles. The Sheriff’s Office is now reviewing that policy.

“Our office remains committed to the safety of our employees,” Sheriff Jeff Easter said. “We are in close contact with the deputy and his family, and we are praying for his speedy recovery. This type of violence will not be tolerated.”

Saline County Jail Bookings, April  15

KANSAS CITY —Law enforcement are investigating a suspect on multiple allegations after a high-speed chase in a Kansas City suburb.

Just after 3:30p.m. Saturday,&nbsp; police officer observed a vehicle speeding and driving recklessly on Watson Drive near Price Chopper Kearney, Missouri, according to a media release. As the officer got behind the speeding vehicle, he noticed a paper temporary tag that expired in 2024. The officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle, but the driver had other plans. 

The vehicle continued south on Watson Drive past the water tower and toward 19th Street, failing to stop. The vehicle then took the 19th street bridge to southbound Interstate 35 where he continued to evade officers who were now in pursuit.

Assistance was requested to other law enforcement agencies for help. Deputies with the Clay County Sheriff's Office set up a perfect cascade of tire deflation devices (stop sticks) near the 69/Lightburne exit ramp from Interstate 35. The suspect drove over all the sticks and every tire was quickly deflating. The driver then took the 291 Highway exit into Liberty, turning onto N Church Road near the Price Chopper.

As all the tires were shredded, the vehicle stopped, and the driver immediately got out and started to run from the vehicle. After a short foot pursuit, the suspect was tased and taken into custody without further incident. 

The driver was revealed to have a revoked driver's license and had 6 active warrants for his arrest to include resisting/evading arrest . There were no damages to any other property and no other people were injured during this pursuit.

The 33-year-old male of Gladstone, Missouri was transported to the Clay County Detention Center where he was booked in requested felony charges of aggravated fleeing in motor vehicle (Valentine's Law). He was charged in custody by the Clay County Prosecutors Office with a bond of $75,000.&nbsp;

Wanted suspect captured after running from KC area high-speed chase

A Salina man was arrested Sunday morning following a domestic disturbance in the 1300 block of Derby Avenue.

According to Salina Police Captain James Feldman, officers were dispatched at approximately 9:40 a.m. after a third-party caller reported receiving a text from a 36-year-old woman asking them to contact 911 on her behalf.

When officers arrived, they spoke with the woman, who reported that she had gotten into an argument with 35-year-old Darnell Roberson, who also lives at the residence. She told police that after she went to lie down, Roberson forced her into another room, strangled her, and struck her head on the ground multiple times. 

She was eventually able to get up and move to a different room, but Roberson followed and choked her again, according to the report.

"The victim did not lose consciousness and was able to send a text message to a third party asking for help. Officers took Roberson into custody at the scene without incident," Feldman said.&nbsp;

Roberson was booked into the Saline County Jail on requested charges of aggravated kidnapping, aggravated domestic battery, domestic battery, and a warrant for failure to appear.

Friends of the Library spring book sale set for April 24, 26 & 27

SEDGWICK COUNTY — A woman accused of driving a stolen vehicle that was involved in a crash that killed a Hutchinson woman attended an arraignment hearing on Monday morning.

Katelyn Barrioz, 24 of Wichita, pled guilty to 2nd degree murder, fleeing or attempting to elude an officer, and theft in Judge Seth Rundle’s courtroom, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office.

In November she was charged with First-Degree Felony Murder, Second-Degree Murder – Reckless, Felony Flee and Elude, Aggravated Burglary, Auto Theft and Criminal Damage to Property, according to Wichita Police spokesman Andrew Ford.

On October 27, police located an occupied stolen vehicle at the Riverwalk Apartments, according to Officer Kris Gupilan. Officers monitored the vehicle using unmarked cars, and air support was requested from the Kansas Highway Patrol.

&nbsp;The vehicle stopped at Walmart, 29th and Rock Road in Wichita. Officers deployed spike strips to prevent the vehicle from leaving, successfully deflating two tires.

Despite this, the suspect later identified as Barrioz, fled the Walmart parking lot, striking a police vehicle.

Officers did not pursue the vehicle, but KHP air support continued to track it from above. The vehicle proceeded to a business on North Webb Road, where two individuals exited the vehicle and fled on foot.

One individual was apprehended, while&nbsp; Barrioz stole the van from the business and fled south on Webb, then west on 29th Street, according to Gupilan.

KHP Air maintained surveillance of the stolen vehicle, which, at 29th and Wilderness, collided with a&nbsp; Chevy Cobalt.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported the stolen 2024 Ford Transit Van driven by Barrioz, 24, Wichita, was westbound in the eastbound lanes in the&nbsp;8700 block of E 29th St N in Wichita traveling in the inside lane.

The van struck an eastbound 2010 Chevy Cobalt driven by Mandy Lynn&nbsp;Buckwalter, 43, Hutchinson, head-on.

Buckwalter was pronounced dead at the scene. EMS transported Barrioz to Wesley Medical Center for treatment. She was booked into the Sedgwick County Jail later that week, according to online jail records.&nbsp;

She is now scheduled for sentencing on April 28.

Katelyn Elizabeth Barrioz, 24, Wichita, is schedule for a preliminary hearing before Judge Seth Rundle, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office.&nbsp; The hearing was delayed twice in March.

Buckwalter was pronounced dead at the scene. EMS transported Barrioz to Wesley Medical Center for treatment. She was booked into the Sedgwick County Jail on Tuesday evening, according to online jail records. Police presented their case to the district attorney on Thursday.

Barrioz remains jailed on a bond of $1.2 million.&nbsp;

The vehicle proceeded to a business on North Webb Road, where two individuals exited the vehicle and fled on foot.One individual was apprehended, while&nbsp; Barrioz stole the van from the business and fled south on Webb, then west on 29th Street, according to Gupilan.KHP Air maintained surveillance of the stolen vehicle, which, at 29th and Wilderness, collided with a&nbsp; Chevy Cobalt.The Kansas Highway Patrol reported the stolen 2024 Ford Transit Van driven by Barrioz, 24, Wichita, was westbound in the eastbound lanes in the&nbsp;8700 block of E 29th St N in Wichita traveling in the inside lane.The van struck an eastbound 2010 Chevy Cobalt driven by Mandy Lynn&nbsp;Buckwalter, 43, Hutchinson, head-on.Buckwalter was pronounced dead at the scene. EMS transported Barrioz to Wesley Medical Center for treatment. She was booked into the Sedgwick County Jail on Tuesday evening, according to online jail records. Police presented their case to the district attorney on Thursday.Barrioz remains jailed on a bond of $1.2 million.&nbsp;

Suspect enters plea for stolen vehicle crash that killed Kan. woman

The next installment of A Prairie Conversation with Wes Jackson and Friends will feature a poetic twist. Renowned poets Robert Hass and Jesse Nathan will join Jackson for an evening exploring ecology, history, literature, and visions of a sustainable future.

The event is scheduled for 6–8 p.m. on Tuesday, April 30, in Room 201 of Peters Science Hall on the Kansas Wesleyan University campus. Admission is free.

Jackson, a 1958 KWU graduate, professor emeritus of biology, and co-founder of The Land Institute, will moderate the discussion and an audience Q&amp;A following the presentations.

Hass, a former U.S. Poet Laureate (1995–1997), is the author of Time and Materials, which won both the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award. His other acclaimed works include Sun Under Wood, Summer Snow, and Poet in the New World, a 2024 release of translated works by Czeslaw Milosz. Hass is professor emeritus at the University of California, Berkeley.

Joining the conversation is Jesse Nathan, a Kansas-raised poet whose debut collection, Eggtooth, was published in 2023 and received the Great Lakes Colleges Association's New Writers Award and the Housatonic Book Prize. A Bethel College graduate, Nathan’s poetry has appeared in The Paris Review, Best American Poetry, The New Republic, and the I-70 Review. He teaches English at UC Berkeley and frequently returns to his family farm near Turkey Creek in McPherson County.

Books by both poets will be available for purchase at Red Fern Booksellers in downtown Salina.

In the days leading up to the poetry conversation, Kansas Wesleyan and The Land Institute will host a weekend of events celebrating Kernza—a perennial grain developed under the guidance of Dr. Wes Jackson that has the potential to revolutionize sustainable farming.

 The celebration begins Friday, April 25, with free public tours of the Heartland RIFT farms and The Land Institute, followed by lunch and a spring plant identification walk. That evening, guests are invited to The Farm and Odd Fellows in Minneapolis for a beer tasting featuring Kernza-based brews, dinner, and screenings of the documentary Beer Saves the World.

The weekend concludes Saturday, April 26, with the red carpet world premiere of Prairie Prophecy, a new feature-length documentary about Jackson’s life and legacy, at the Stiefel Theatre in downtown Salina. SEDGWICK COUNTY —A woman arrested in connection with an accidental shooting that injured a 4-year-old girl is no longer in custody.

On Friday,&nbsp; police arrested 50-year-old Ana Rosa Sorto of Wichita on requested charges of Aggravated Child Endangerment, according to online&nbsp; booking records.

Just before 2p.m. Friday, police responded to the 2500 block of E. Harry in Wichita following reports of a shooting, according to Officer Kris Gupilan.

First responders found a 4-year-old girl who had sustained a single gunshot wound to her lower torso. She was immediately transported to a local hospital and was still in critical condition Saturday, according to Gupilan.

After preliminary investigation, it was found that the child's guardian, identified as Sorto, left a firearm unsecured, allowing the child to access it, resulting in the child unintentionally shooting themselves.&nbsp; At 11:39p.m. Friday police booked Sorto into the Sedgwick County Jail. She bonded out of jail Sunday evening, according to online jail records.

Police will the case to the District Attorney for formal charges.&nbsp; Police did proved an update on the child's condition.

According to Salina Police Capt. James Feldman, officers were called to the 900 block of W. South Street just after 5:30 p.m. on April 10. A 39-year-old Salina man reported that while he was riding his bicycle eastbound, a gold Chevy S-10 pickup approached heading westbound. The driver, later identified as 38-year-old Christopher Hess of Salina, allegedly crossed the center line and swerved toward the bicyclist in what the victim believed was an attempt to hit him.

The cyclist swerved off the road and fell into nearby grass. A witness in the area confirmed the victim’s account, Feldman said.

Hess was located a short time later in the 300 block of N. Santa Fe and taken into custody without incident. He was booked into the Saline County Jail on requested charges of aggravated assault, violation of a protection order, and failure to maintain lane.

National Award-winning <a href="http://Salinatheatre.com">Theatre Salina</a> is announcing the titles for its 65th season. The new season will include three shows from the theatre’s past and four new titles. Two of the new musicals have just been made available to community theatres.

The season will open in September with Disney’s FROZEN. This production features music and lyrics from Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez with the book by Jennifer Lee. The story follows Princesses Anna and Elsa in their frozen kingdom of Arendelle. Taken from the Disney movie of the same name, songs include “Do You Want to Build a Snowman” and “Let It Go”.

In October, the Theatre is pleased to present a world-premiere of the comedy LISTEN by Brigid Amos. This production is part of the American Association of Community Theatres New PlayFest. In this story, Kelly opens her first gallery in New York. Dale, a renowned but reclusive artist, wanders into her gallery with his latest painting. Kelly’s initial excitement dies when she realizes Dale has begun to copy PBS’s Bob Ross in his work. Dale’s caretaker sister and his greatest rival only make matters funnier.

Theatre Salina is excited to be one of the first community theatres in the country to present DR. SEUSS’S HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS, THE MUSICAL. The Grinch hates all the joy down in Whoville, so he and his dog, Max, decide they will steal all the joy from the hapless WHOs. You’ll be delighted with all the characters you’ve known for decades in this new musical retelling including the Grinch, Max, Cindy Lou Who, and all the Who family. Songs to delight all audiences are “Welcome Christmas” and “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch”.

January’s presentation is the classic drama TWELVE ANGRY MEN by Reginald Rose. This supremely entertaining production will be directed by Salina’s own Tyrees Allen. Coincidentally, Tyrees’ first role after reaching Hollywood was in the remake of this movie including George C. Scott, Jack Lemon, and Ossie Davis. The action takes place in a jury room where a seemingly “open and shut” case gets turned around when one juror isn’t quite sure it should be so easy to send a 19-year-old to his death.

February brings the hilarious comedy SWEET DELILAH SWIM CLUB by Jones Hope Wooten. This comedy follows five female college swimmers as they meet every year in the same beach house. This hit comedy was produced here previously under another title with great success. Follow Lexie, Dinah, Sheree, Vernadette, and Jeri Neal through a lifetime of love and friendship.

The Theatre will again partner with Kansas Wesleyan University in April with the exciting and slapstick THE PIRATES OF PENZANCE. This hilarious retelling of the Gilbert and Sullivan operetta was recrafted at the Public Theatre and became a new instant classic. The topsy-turvy world of pirates and maidens will come to life on our stage with vaudeville physicality and humor.

The season closes in June with another new musical, JIMMY BUFFET’S ESCAPE TO MARGARITAVILLE.

Featuring popular Jimmy Buffet classics, including “Cheeseburger in Paradise”, “Margaritaville”, “It’s Five O’clock Somewhere”, and “Volcano”. The show tells the story of a handsome bartender and singer in the Caribbean who falls for a career-minded tourist. Created by Jimmy Buffet, Greg Garcia, and Mike O’Malley, this hilarious and heartwarming musical will have all the Parrot heads singing along.

Theatre Salina unveils 65th season with Disney's 'Frozen,' new comedies, and classic favorites

Kansas State University's Michael Krysko, associate professor of history, has published a new book that explores radio's propensity to traverse political and cultural borders.

"Contested Airwaves: American Radio at Home and Abroad, 1914-1946," published by the University of Illinois Press, spans a tumultuous period encompassing two world wars and investigates the often-hostile reactions provoked by border-crossing broadcasts considered to be foreign, unwelcome and even threatening to many outraged and protesting listeners.

In trying to make sense of varied listener and policymaker reactions, "Contested Airwaves" considers how radio engaged the knowledge, assumptions and prejudices that fueled such animosities.

As American radio broadcasting became increasingly tethered to commercial entertainment programming, widespread opposition to non-English language broadcasting grew in intensity during the 1930s.

"Even Groucho Marx weighed in with his complaints," Krysko noted about the increasingly widespread concerns about foreign language broadcasting before the U.S. entered World War II.

According to Krysko, efforts to use broadcasting to teach languages across borders floundered in the face of the misunderstandings and prejudices that infused the radio educators' approaches. Fierce diplomatic controversies about national rights to radio frequencies and cross-border interference pit nations against each other in futile battles.

"I particularly enjoyed writing about listeners who were utterly so furious about what they heard on the radio that they took time to write some angry missive and mail it to whomever they held responsible for supposedly un-American broadcasts," Krysko said. "The emotion and hyperbole often infused into these letters often offered insight into more pervasive ideas about race, ethnicity and nationalism that ran through American society in the first half of the twentieth century."

John Brinkley, a pioneering broadcaster and nearly successful Kansas gubernatorial candidate, figures prominently in the study. He was the spark for a decade-long U.S.-Mexico radio dispute that spanned the 1930s. It erupted when he began broadcasting from south of the U.S.-Mexican border deliberately intending to interfere with some of the most popular American radio stations.

"The road to completion for this book was a really long one and I’m both delighted and relieved it’s finally finished. I first researched John Brinkley in the late 1990s, never imagining that I might someday wind up at Kansas State University just a few miles away from John Brinkley’s old stomping grounds in Milford," Krysko said.

A member of the Department of History since 2006, Krysko teaches and writes on the history of technology and U.S. foreign relations. "Contested Airwaves" is his second book and is part of the University of Illinois' series in the History of Media and Communications.

Saline County Jail Bookings, April 11

&nbsp;JACKSON COUNTY, Kan.—Law enforcement are investigating a suspect on drug allegations.

Jus after 1:30p.m. April 4, the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office received a call of a reckless driver on U.S. 75 near 266th Road. The suspect was driving on the shoulder of the highway and into oncoming traffic.&nbsp; A Jackson County Sheriff’s Deputy located the vehicle, a 2019 Toyota Avalon driving south on U.S. 75, just north of Holton.

 The deputy initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle near 192nd Road. As a result of the traffic stop, the driver, Josiah Desmond Jerrell Williams, 38, of Topeka was arrested and booked into the Jackson County Jail on requested charges that include possession of cocaine, possession of stimulant, possession of drug paraphernalia, driving under the influence of drugs/alcohol, incapable of safely operating; 2nd offense, transporting an open container of alcohol, violation of driving restrictions, improper driving on laned roadway and traffic contraband into correctional facility.

Saline County Jail Bookings, April 10

A Salina man was taken into custody Tuesday afternoon after allegedly stealing a pickup truck and shoplifting from a local business, according to the Salina Police Department.

SPD Capt. Feldman reported that at approximately 2:50 p.m. on April 8, a 32-year-old woman reported her gold 2014 Dodge Ram 1500 pickup stolen from her residence in the 1000 block of E. Beloit. The truck, valued at $19,000, had been taken shortly before officers arrived.

The victim identified the suspect as 30-year-old Hugh Alden of Salina, an associate who had been at her residence earlier that day. According to the victim, the two had a verbal argument, during which Alden allegedly took the truck’s keys without her knowledge. The victim told officers the keys were equipped with an AirTag, which showed the vehicle’s location near Waters True Value at 460 S. Ohio.

As SPD officers responded to that location, employees at Waters True Value contacted police to report a theft in progress. Upon arrival, officers observed Alden walking away from the store and took him into custody.

Further investigation revealed Alden had allegedly shoplifted two shirts and a pair of pants, valued at $126. The items were recovered at the scene, and the stolen vehicle was also returned to the victim without any reported damage.

Alden was booked into the Saline County Jail on requested charges of one count of felony theft and one count of misdemeanor theft.

TOPEKA — Gov. Laura Kelly signed bipartisan legislation Tuesday establishing a task force dedicated to developing a long-term investment strategy for Kansas water resources modeled after the state’s rolling 10-year transportation program.

The Democratic governor praised members of the Republican-led Legislature for approving&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kslegislature.gov/li/b2025_26/measures/documents/ccrb_hb2172_00_03252025.pdf" target="_blank">House Bill 2172</a>&nbsp;to create a dedicated funding source for addressing&nbsp; the state’s water challenges. “Developing a comprehensive, long-term and sustainable water program is long overdue and a significant step forward in ensuring Kansas’ water supply is preserved for generations to come,” Kelly said. “I commend the Legislature for advancing my proposal and acting on this critical issue.”

The bill passed the House on a vote of 116-8 and it received unanimous support in the Senate. In January, Kelly recommended the Legislature authorize the task force. The Kansas Water Authority and Kelly administration conducted 14 public meetings last year to gather input on water policy.

The task force, with members from each of the state’s five conservation regions, must work to evaluate major risks to Kansas’ water quality and quantity, including issues of current and future economic growth. It must evaluate water infrastructure needs in every corner of the state.

“This is a critical step forward in addressing Kansas’ water challenges by establishing a dedicated task force and work group to guide our state’s water policy and funding decisions,” said Senate President Ty Masterson, R-Andover.&nbsp;“This bill reflects a bipartisan legislative commitment to ensuring sustainable water resources for future generations, and I’m proud to see it move forward with the governor’s support.”

It wouldn’t apply to dealers of semitrailers and travel trailers.Her signing of&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kslegislature.gov/li/b2025_26/measures/documents/ccrb_hb2122_00_0000.pdf" target="_blank">House Bill 2122</a>&nbsp;meant the annual license fee of electric and hybrid vehicles would increase. The fee for electric hybrid vehicles would go from $50 to $70, while the plug-in electric hybrid vehicle fee would rise from $50 to $100. Meanwhile, Kelly signed&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kslegislature.gov/li/b2025_26/measures/documents/supp_note_hb2242_01_0000.pdf" target="_blank">House Bill 2242</a>&nbsp;to authorize a Kansas governor to accept requests for concurrent jurisdiction from the federal government.
