SHAWNEE COUNTY —Law enforcement are investigating a suspect on multiple allegations after a standoff in Topeka.

Just before 9:30a.m. Friday, police responded to a report of an Aggravated Battery in the 1200 block of SW Washburn Avenue in Topeka, according to Police LT John Trimble.

Through the investigation, officers were led to an address in the 5000 block of SW 28th Street in Topeka. Multiple resources from the Topeka Police Department were utilized at this secondary location. Police didn't find the suspect.

The investigation led police to the 2100 block of SW Potomac Drive. After a brief standoff, 37-year-old Dylan James Gragson was arrested and booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on requested charges, Aggravated Kidnapping, Aggravated Battery, Aggravated Domestic Battery, Aggravated Intimidation of a Victim, Criminal Threat, Criminal Restraint, Domestic Battery and Felony Interference.

The former vice-president said she hasn’t decided whether to mount a 2028 presidential campaign. But she dismissed the suggestion that she’d face long odds.

“I have lived my entire career a life of service and it’s in my bones. And there are many ways to serve,” she said. “I’ve never listened to polls.”

She’s recently given a series of interviews following the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kamala-harris-book-democrats-donald-trump-53cd29f4e85ff80dcea8ee3d201204f7" rel="nofollow">September release</a>&nbsp;of her book,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kamala-harris-donald-trump-campaign-book-f8663d56a637bd1be494348021141eba" rel="nofollow">“107 Days.”</a>&nbsp;It looks back on her experience replacing then-President Joe Biden as the 2024 Democratic presidential nominee after&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/biden-drops-out-2024-election-ddffde72838370032bdcff946cfc2ce6" rel="nofollow">he dropped out</a>&nbsp;of the race.

Kamala Harris leaves door open for 2028 presidential run

Marilyn Joyce Correll Helmer, 84, of Tescott, KS died October 22, 2025, at St. Francis Via Christi Hospital in Wichita, KS. Marilyn was born August 29, 1941, in Detroit, KS to Alice McCosh Correll and Frank Edison Correll. Marilyn’s mother Alice was a homemaker and Marilyn’s father Frank was the superintendent of Dickinson County schools and Secretary of the Mutal Aid Association of the Church of the Brethren. Marilyn graduated from Chapman High School in 1959 and attended McPherson College.

It was at McPherson College that Marilyn met Martin Helmer of Canton, KS. They got married on December 23, 1961. Martin and Marilyn started their married lives in Buckeye, KS. 3 children followed, Patty, Paul and Jon.

Marilyn was gifted as a vocalist. At Chapman High School, Marilyn performed with the Harmonettes quartet, who received recognition and awards regionally and at the state level. Marilyn was a member of the Sweet Adelines in Abilene.

The family moved to Tescott in 1965 where Martin was Principal of Tescott Grade School for 36 years and Marilyn immersed herself in community and school activities. She entertained many friends, neighbors, relatives and her children’s friends in their home. Everyone was welcome and greeted with a beverage, snack or meal.

Marilyn had two grandchildren, Aaron and Conner, and two great-grandchildren, Thomas and Nathan. Visits to Grandma and Grandpa’s house through the years resulted in consuming Grandpa burgers, many pies and cookies, Kansas history lessons, family history and soaking up lots of love.

Marilyn was especially fond of children, and was the mom, aunt or cousin who always “sat at the children’s table” to help entertain the children. Her relatives, friends, neighbors, grandchildren and great-grandchildren have witnessed, benefitted and maybe gotten into some trouble due to her fun-loving and slightly rebellious nature.

As her children left the nest Marilyn started her career as a business owner and Kansas Ambassador. Marilyn opened Village Lines in Lincoln, KS in 1986, supporting and featuring Kansas artists. Marilyn incorporated her knowledge and desire to provide healthy, natural and gluten free food items to her line.

Through the year she has forged friendships in Lincoln and across Kansas in the effort to showcase the Sunflower state and the town of Lincoln. She helped launch Kansas Originals located on 1-70, showcasing Kansas artists and makers. She twice served as Lincoln Chamber of Commerce President, helped establish the Northeast Kansas Tourism Commission, and served on a year-long Governor’s Tourism Task Force. She was recognized as a “We Can” recipient of the Kansas Sampler Foundation, was recognized by the Kansas Legislature as one of Kansas’ businesses of the year, and was featured with life-long friend Terry Tietjens in Kansas! Magazine as a “Kansas Finest” for promoting Kansas.

Marilyn co-authored with Shirley Buchanan “A True Account of the 1911 ‘Tar Party’ of Shady Bend, Kansas”, blending her love of Kansas history and story-telling. Marlin Fitzwater, former White House Press Secretary and a friend of Marilyn’s wrote the forward for the book and helped promote it.

Survivors include her husband, Martin of Tescott;&nbsp; daughter Patty Sargent and husband Andy of Papillion, NE; son Jon Helmer of Denver, Co; son Paul Helmer of Henderson, NV; grandsons Aaron Sargent of LaVista, NE and Conner Sargent of Pelham, NH; great grandchildren Thomas Sargent and Nathan Sargent of LaVista, NE; sister Nadene Lauer (Keith, deceased) of McPherson, KS; sister-in-law Eleanor Correll (Dale, deceased of Abilene, KS.&nbsp; Marilyn is also survived by brothers-in-law David Helmer (Marilyn), Paul Helmer (Charlene), Ted Helmer (Carolyn), sister-in-law Cynthia Helmer (Luther, deceased) and brother-in-law Keith Stuewe (Ruth, deceased), and many nieces and nephews who held a special place in her heart.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by sister Doris Moore and husband Maurice of Waterloo, IA, and brother Dale Correll (deceased) of Abilene, KS.

Whether doling out sunflower seed cookies, pie, a cup of coffee or imparting wisdom, showing love through hospitality was her passion. Marilyn shared her infectious personality, generous spirit and genuine caring nature to all who knew her. She was a deeply committed Christian who shared the light of Jesus through the way she lived her life and through her love and caring concern for everyone she encountered.

Celebration of Life service will be held Saturday, November 1,&nbsp;2025, 11 AM, at the Lincoln High School gymnasium, 701 E. North St., Lincoln, KS. Luncheon to follow at the Lincoln County Historical Museum, 216 W. Lincoln Ave, Lincoln, KS.

WYANDOTTE COUNTY —Law enforcement are investigating suspects in connection with a drug distribution ring and have seized a large amount of fentanyl.

On October 16, the Kansas City Kansas Police Department’s Narcotics and Special Operations Units served a warrant at a home in downtown Kansas City, Kansas, according to a media release.. Officers seized 9.2 lbs. of fentanyl, as well as guns and other drugs. 

“This was our biggest, if not the metro’s, biggest fentanyl seizure since we began tracking the drug in late 2020,” Captain Shawn Magee, KCKPD Narcotics Unit, said. 

“One kilogram of fentanyl has the potential to kill thousands of people. In this instance, police seized a little over four kilograms. You don’t need to be good at math to know, this one operation saved a lot of lives."

”One hundred times more potent than morphine, fentanyl is a synthetic opioid used for severe pain. Illicitly manufactured fentanyl is often mixed with other drugs, or pressed into counterfeit pills, that resemble prescription opioids."

"However, because of a lack of quality control, illicit fentanyl is often deadly. In 2025, the KCKPD Narcotics Unit has handled 79 overdose cases. Six of those cases involved juveniles, resulting in 21 fatalities. One juvenile died.

As a result of KCKPD’s operation, three individuals were arrested and booked on requested charges of conspiracy to distribute.

Police also seized 11 firearms, 2 with fully automatic switches; 4,186 grams of fentanyl; 64.6 grams of methamphetamine (2 ½ ounces); 232.8 grams of marijuana (half pound: and 786 miscellaneous pills, most will contain fentanyl.

There were no injuries. Police are not identifying the individuals arrested because this remains an ongoing investigation. The owner of the short-term rental cooperated with police in advance of the operation, and is not facing charges. 

“The owners are victims too,” Magee said. “This isn’t a crime-ridden neighborhood; they had no clue they were renting to drug dealers. Unfortunately, switching locations by booking different rentals is appealing to these dealers, because it creates a covert setting, making them more difficult to track. They are clever, but so are we.”

Q: On the shutout against the Raiders.

SPAGNUOLO:&nbsp;“That was special. I mean we enjoyed it for an hour (and) moved on (laughs). I think what gets lost a little bit in that is credit to the special teams, (they) didn’t give up any points, and the offense didn’t turn it over or have one of those. That’s part of it, and then a lot of credit to our guys (the defense). Then the other guys that I don’t want to get lost in all of that is somewhere in the fourth where we changed a lot of – those guys went in and did a nice job too. The Jack Cochrane’s and the Jeffrey Bassa’s and all the guys that went in there (and) Cooper McDonald. They were on point. We all remembered what happened in the Baltimore game where they had that long run. So, I think everybody was thinking about that. It’s a special thing. I’ll think more about it when the season is over. What I did tell the guys was, I hope that’s not the best game we play this year. That would be kind of nice, right?”

Q: What’s the difference between preparing for this Washington team without Jayden Daniels?

SPAGNUOLO:&nbsp;“That’s a great question and I’ll be perfectly frank; it didn’t change at all, and I’ll tell you why, I think they (Commanders) did a really good job for their team by getting a backup quarterback who I think fits exactly what their – it doesn’t feel like, sometimes we play a drop back quarterback and the backup is an athlete. We always got to talk about and maybe have a couple of reps in practice in case this happens. I don’t think they skip a beat in terms of what they’re doing offensively. I think (Offensive Coordinator) Kliff (Kingsbury) just runs the offense because he just knows the next guy in there and I got a lot of respect for (Commanders QB) Marcus (Mariota). I think he’s – 11 seasons in this league. (I) put a highlight tape on yesterday morning, first thing we started off with of just plays he’s had with his feet and with his arm. I think he fits this offense really really well.”

Q: What have you seen from Leo Chenal over the last three years?

SPAGNUOLO:&nbsp;“Leo (Chenal) is a key guy to what we do and what we’ve become because of how many things he can do. You guys have all seen it. He’s played linebacker then we put him at end, he’s gone in there and played tackle. Eventually probably have him out at corner or playing safety or something. The versatility of Leo, especially, and Drue (Tranquill) with the things that they can do have really helped us to kind of put things out there that are maybe a little bit unconventional at times. Leo has been terrific. He’s as valuable as anybody getting in there in key situations, we use him for a lot of different things.”

Q:&nbsp;On the offensive line’s performance.

NAGY:&nbsp;“It’s been good. It’s been really well. The guys are prepared. That’s part of the deal there is make sure that you’re prepared and make sure you understand your role and then a guy like (Mike) Caliendo comes in and does a great job stepping in last week. These guys are ready. They practice the right way and then when you have – really being good in the red zone last week, being great situationally (on) third and fourth down and then protecting the football you got to take advantage of that. We want to keep that going. We want to show – you also have to be careful, in my opinion of when you win, some of the stuff that you’re not doing right getting deodorized by winning. You got to make sure that you stay on top of that and on Monday when they come back in, you show them what we didn’t do right and how we need to make sure that just because we won, that’s not okay. We need to stay on top of that.”

Q:&nbsp;What’s the challenge that you give the offense to keep raising the team’s floor and ceiling?

NAGY:&nbsp;“To keep the execution at a high, right now, which it is. The execution by these players has been great. Protect the football. That has been a key element is making sure that with our defense that we have, if we protect the football and we score touchdowns, we’re always going to be in good shape. And then never get relaxed with the details. This is a detailed offense, and so just when you think you’re doing everything the right way, all of a sudden one little detail can hurt you. I think our coaching staff, (Head) Coach (Andy) Reid, all the guys (and) the players, they’re professionals.”

Q:&nbsp;On Commanders Offensive Coordinator Kliff Kingsbury’s influence on Patrick Mahomes during their time at Texas Tech.

NAGY:&nbsp;“Really really good stuff. I think that when you go back and you look at the amount of time that we invested in looking at Pat (Mahomes), you automatically right away go to who his coach is and what he did with him. I have so much respect for (Commanders Offensive Coordinator) Kliff Kingsbury as a person, as a coach, what he has done on the college level (and) professionally in the NFL also with (Commanders Head Coach) Dan Quinn. Coach Quinn has been great. From the head coaching side too, what he has done – that’s a separate deal from me I just really have a ton of respect for both of them (Dan Quinn and Kliff Kingsbury). What Kliff has done with Pat is really he used his strengths and just gave him confidence to be able to just be himself is what I saw the most. Just go cut it loose and it’s okay if you make a mistake, we’ll reel it in a little bit. He’s doing that now with his quarterback (Jayden Daniels) in Washington and I think that that’s a credit to Kliff.”

Q:&nbsp;On Mike Caliendo and Jaylon Moore subbing in and being just as effective.

HUMPHREY:&nbsp;“These guys, they work really hard in this building. You know, (I’m) proud of the guys in the room. They do a great job (and) everybody stays prepared. They both (Mike Calideno and Jaylon Moore) have done great jobs.”

Q:&nbsp;On the running game right now and if the momentum is going in the right direction.

HUMPHREY:&nbsp;“Yeah, definitely. It feels like we’re moving in the right direction. Obviously, there’s still things to clean up. Continuing to come in every week, improve on our technique, fundamentals all those things and execute on gameday. It feels like things are moving in the right direction. Feels like things are looking good, and just got to keep that up and be consistent with it.”

HUMPHREY:&nbsp;“Really talented front. (Commanders DT Javon) Kinlaw (and) (Commanders DT Daron) Payne inside are really good players. They got really good edge rushers too so the whole front seven, it’s a really good front seven. We got our work cut out for us this week but everybody’s excited (and) everybody’s taking the right approach right now.”

Q:&nbsp;How does your body feel after the lower number of snaps against the Raiders?

JONES:&nbsp;“Life is good man, I can’t complain. Mentally staying sharp (and) the body feels really really good. Knock on wood. But I feel really really good heading into this week. We got a few guys banged up, got to get those guys healthy, but overall, I think we’re in good shape.”

Salina man arrested after allegedly assaulting a woman at a home.

According to the Salina Police Department (SPD) on Thursday at around 10:45 pm, SPD received a 9-1-1 call from a home address in north Salina, regarding a domestic violence incident.

Allegedly, a 42-year old female reported she was assaulted by a 32-year old man identified as, Nalo Bishop. The victim and Bishop are reportedly acquainted.

SPD stated an argument occurred and Bishop proceeded to throw CD player towards her. As a result, she received injuries to her face.&nbsp;

Police added the woman was pushed to the ground and strangled by Bishop.

Officers arrived after the incident and arrested Bishop. He was booked into the Saline County Jail on the following requested charges of Aggravated Domestic Battery.

It was unsure if the victim needed or received medical treatment.

Domestic violence incident results in arrest 

SEDGWICK COUNTY —A third suspect accused in a fatal drug overdose involving a 15-year-old Kansas girl&nbsp; is no longer in custody.

Danielle D. Wheeler, 53, made her first court appearance on Tuesday and was charged with&nbsp; involuntary manslaughter and child endangerment in the death of 15-year-old&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cozine.com/obituaries/kennedy-herren" target="_blank">Kennedy Herren</a>, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office.&nbsp;

Just after 10a.m. Wednesday, she was booked into the Sedgwick County jail. She met the requirement of bond and was released just after 5p.m. Wednesday, according to online jail records.

On September 14, police responded to the report of a deceased 15-year-old in Wichita, according to a media release from police. The investigation determined the death of Kennedy Herren was the result of a drug overdose.

Since then, Wichita police overdose analyst worked to pursue justice and ensure accountability for the people responsible for this senseless death.&nbsp;

On October 15,&nbsp;K-9 officers arrested 24-year-old Isaac L. Hord and on October 19 they arrested 24-year-old Niklas Wiley in connection with this case. 

They have both been harged with first-degree murder and aggravated  endangering a child. Wiley is also facing charges of criminal sodomy,&nbsp; sexual exploitation of a child and&nbsp; aggravated indecent liberties with a child, according to the district attorney's office.

Both remain in custody in the Sedgwick Count Jail on a one-million dollar bond, according to online jail records.

All three suspects are scheduled to return to court on November 3.

Woman accused in Kan. teen's overdose death is out of jail

MONTGOMERY COUNTY—Law enforcement are investigating a suspect on multiple allegations after an arrest following a pursuit.

Just before 10:30p.m.&nbsp;October 20, sheriff's deputies attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a vehicle near Main and Liberty Street in Cherryvale, Kansas, according to Sheriff Ron Wade.

The vehicle did not display a visible rear license plate. The driver failed to stop, and a short vehicle pursuit ensued. The vehicle eventually came to a stop at a residence in the 200 block of Neosho Street in Cherryvale. 

Deputies made contact with the driver, later identified as Jacob Hamilton, of Cherryvale, Kansas. Hamilton resisted arrest but was quickly taken into custody without further incident. He was transported to the Montgomery County Department of Corrections. During the investigation, deputies determined that Hamilton had discarded approximately 48 grams of methamphetamine from the vehicle during the pursuit. 

A loaded firearm was also located inside the vehicle. Deputies developed probable cause and obtained a narcotics search warrant for Hamilton’s residence. With the assistance of the Cherryvale Police Department, deputies executed the search warrant and located additional drug paraphernalia, evidence indicating narcotics had been destroyed, and multiple stolen items linked to thefts in Cherryvale, Coffeyville, Labette County, Wilson County, and Neosho County.

Hamilton was booked into the Montgomery County Department of Corrections on requested charges of Distribution of methamphetamine,&nbsp; Possession of drug paraphernalia, Interference with law enforcement, Fleeing and attempting to elude law enforcement, Transporting an open container, Failure to use a turn signal, No vehicle registration and No vehicle insurance.

Kan. man accused of throwing meth from vehicle during chase

SEDGWICK COUNTY —A Kansas woman accused in a crash that killed a Kansas teen was in court for a pre-trial conference on Wednesday.

Trisha Greer, 43, Derby, pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter while driving under the influence before Judge Quentin Pittman, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office.

In June she plead not guilty to&nbsp; charge charges and was to face a jury trial last month.

Just after 11p.m. May 14, Greer was driving without headlights at 55th Street South and Hoover, according to Sheriff's Lt Nathan Gibbs. The vehicle struck and killed 18-year-old Bethany Aillen Callista Leggio who was standing with a group of people at the location.

Greer was booked into jail just after 1a.m. the following morning, according to online jail records. She met the requirements of bond and is no longer in custody.&nbsp;Senencing is scheduled for January 29, according to the district attorney's office.

 </figure>SEDGWICK COUNTY —A Kansas woman accused in a crash that killed a Kansas teen was in court for a pre-trial conference on Wednesday.Trisha Greer, 43, Derby, pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter while driving under the influence before Judge Quentin Pittman, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office.In June she plead not guilty to&nbsp; charge charges and was to face a jury trial last month.Just after 11p.m. May 14, Greer was driving without headlights at 55th Street South and Hoover, according to Sheriff's Lt Nathan Gibbs. The vehicle struck and killed 18-year-old Bethany Aillen Callista Leggio who was standing with a group of people at the location.Greer was booked into jail just after 1a.m. the following morning, according to online jail records. She met the requirements of bond and is no longer in custody.&nbsp;Senencing is scheduled for January 29, according to the district attorney's office.

Salina Central theatre arts and music departments present: "Catch Me If You Can"

Disturbance at a Salina home leads to a male suspect assaulting a man and threatening two women, before his arrest.

According to the Salina Police Department (SPD) on Wednesday at around 8:50 pm, officers arrested a male suspect who allegedly assaulted a male in the 1200 block of Gypsum.

Before the arrest, SPD stated the suspect identified as 39-year old, Demetrius Carruthers and a 32-year old man were inside Carruthers' home, when a disturbance occurred between them.&nbsp;

Reportedly, Carruthers allegedly swung a knife at the victim. The victim then exited the home and ran away, as Carruthers chased after him. SPD stated the victim then fell on the ground and Carruthers began kicking and hitting him.

Afterwards, neighbors heard the commotion and two women told Carruthers they were going to call the police. Carruthers then threatened the two by saying he was going to "shoot them and the police." He then returned to his home.

Officers then arrived to Carruthers' home and was arrested him without incident. He was booked into the Saline County Jail on the following requested charges of:

Aggravated Battery, Criminal Threat (2 requested charges) and Intimidation of a Witness (2 requested charges).

The victim was transported to Salina Regional Health Center for injuries he sustained.

Kesterson is one of the best kept secrets in southwestern Kansas. An accomplished author who first published a work at the age of 68, her career as a "wordsmith" has been a long time coming. She can trace her love of stories all the way back to her childhood.

Kesterson grew up in New York as a child, born in on the island of Manhattan in New York City, and living on the outskirts in the developing suburbs of Long Island. As a girl, she would blaze through books at an advanced level. Her hunger for stories even came out when she was playing.

"If you were an only child and it was raining, you made up stories." Kesterson continued, "I played house with my dolls and of course they talked back to me."

While she maintained her love of stories, Kesterson moved north to attend the University of Maine. There she expanded into the sciences, graduating with a bachelors in zoology. 

Following that, she continued in the sciences in Detroit, where she attended nursing school, and meet her first husband. They had a daughter, and moved to Jackson, MS when his company transferred him. While in Jackson, Kesterson would go on to start a Star Trek fan club and join the Mississippi Opera Company as a chorus member.

Kesterson would go on to perform on stage, staying true to her love of stories. Eventually, she settled down in Southwestern Kansas, raised a family, and in 2018, published her first work. 

Her first&nbsp;professionally&nbsp;published short story appeared in Tales of the Interstellar Bartenders Guild, which gave her the first official writing credit. The anthology, like her two co-authored time travel novels, are no longer available due to the publisher going out of business. However, it was an important step on her journey as a writer.

Her first novel, Resort to Murder, is inspired by a variety of memories. The titular, Lauren Kaye is heavily based on Kesterson's witty personality. Kesterson also wrote the plot based on her medical knowledge and some scuba experience she had from college.&nbsp;

Her second novel, Staged for Death, is heavily inspired by her time with the Mississippi Opera Company. Kesterson used the chaos of theatre as she experienced it to benefit her novel's narrative. While her theatrical career in real life is devoid of murder, all the backstage mishaps and conflicts seen in the book are true.

Kesterson's use of lived experiences is not her only tactic for writing. Research plays a major part in shaping her murder plots. 

Her questions have been answered both from medical professionals and academic sources. Kesterson fully commits to keeping her novels based in reality. Her dedication shines through when it comes to shaping her murder plots. Her newest novel took hours of research to perfect.

One of the highlights of writing for Kesterson is seeing how her fans dig into her work. She attends fan conventions, such as the recent comic-con in Hutchison, KS. Events like these have brought fans of all ages to visit her.&nbsp;

"One of the biggest thrills I have is to watch a 10, 11, 12, or 13 year old walk off with the entire collection of mysteries, knowing that they are going to enjoy them," said Kesterson.

The preliminary hearing for the ongoing case of Kayla Errebo (32), has been rescheduled for next year.

Errebo was arrested back on Friday, August 8th for a&nbsp;<a href="https://salinapost.com/posts/3e716804-4732-43e4-a3cf-086e2bdc9859">head-on collision</a>&nbsp;into Mark Sommerfeld (61) and Deanna Sommerfeld (55) on a rural Saline County road.&nbsp;Errebo fled from the crash site, but deputies located and arrested her at an address in Ellsworth.&nbsp;

She is booked into the Saline County Jail and is currently facing requested charges of: 

Murder in the second degree, Failure to report an injury accident, Circumvention of ignition interlock device and Probation violation.

Errebo also plead guilty back on October 2024 for&nbsp;<a href="https://salinapost.com/posts/fca0f97b-593e-429a-8d0d-ebba84210fe7">fleeing and eluding law enforcement, driving under the influence (DUI) and leaving the scene of an accident.</a>

UPDATE: Court hearing for Errebo rescheduled to next year 

SEDGWICK COUNTY —A suspect arrested in connection with a violent abduction shown on a doorbell video last week in Wichita made his first appearance in court Monday.&nbsp;

A judge charged 22-year-old Daniel T. Espitia Guevara with&nbsp;aggravated domestic battery and misdemeanor counts of domestic battery and&nbsp; criminal restraint, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office. He is also on an Immigration and Customs Enforcement hold.

Last week, the Wichita Police Department asked for the community’s help in identifying and locating a woman in a doorbell video who was seen being taken by force on October 12, at approximately 2 AM., in the 1400 block of North Volutsia in Wichita.

Just after 3p.m. October 14, Wichita Police Investigators received a phone call, from a woman claiming to be the individual investigators were attempting to identify. Investigators immediately responded to her location, made contact, and transported her to City Hall so detectives could conduct a victim interview. Police confirmed the identity of the woman as a 35-year-old who lives in the area where the video was captured. Police believed this incident is a case of domestic violence where the woman was victimized by her boyfriend. The woman did not have any significant injuries.

Just after 7 p.m. October 14, officers with the Wichita Police Domestic Intervention and Violence Reduction team (DIVRT) located and arrested Guevara in relation to a doorbell surveillance case and booked him into jail.

He remains in custody on a $75,000 bond, according to the district attorney's office.

 </figure>Last week, the Wichita Police Department asked for the community’s help in identifying and locating a woman in a doorbell video who was seen being taken by force on October 12, at approximately 2 AM., in the 1400 block of North Volutsia in Wichita.Just after 3p.m. October 14, Wichita Police Investigators received a phone call, from a woman claiming to be the individual investigators were attempting to identify. Investigators immediately responded to her location, made contact, and transported her to City Hall so detectives could conduct a victim interview. Police confirmed the identity of the woman as a 35-year-old who lives in the area where the video was captured. Police believed this incident is a case of domestic violence where the woman was victimized by her boyfriend. The woman did not have any significant injuries.Just after 7 p.m. October 14, officers with the Wichita Police Domestic Intervention and Violence Reduction team (DIVRT) located and arrested Guevara in relation to a doorbell surveillance case and booked him into jail.He remains in custody on a $75,000 bond, according to the district attorney's office.

Suspect in Kansas doorbell camera abduction faces a judge

SEDGWICK COUNTY —A man who&nbsp;admitted killing a Kansas woman who was reported missing is going to prison for the rest of his life. 

On Monday Judge Jeffrey Goering sentenced 31-year-old Kyle Bearden to a life term for the murder of 30-year-old Mariana Christian, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office. The earliest possibility of parole is 25 years and an additional 181 months in prison if parole is granted.

In August, Bearden entered a plea of guilty during an evidentiary hearing before Judge Goering.

The plea agreement called for the parties to jointly recommend a prison sentence of life with parole eligibility after 25 years, to be followed by an additional 15 years of imprisonment if parole is granted.

Around 10:30 a.m. on July 21, a friend of Mariana Christian filed a missing person report. The friend said Ms. Christian had a history of mental health challenges and often relied on them for transportation to work. That morning, Christian was not at her home in the 1200 block of S. Paige when the friend arrived to pick her up.

At the residence, the friend encountered an unidentified man later identified as Kyle Bearden who said he didn’t know Ms. Christian’s whereabouts.

He claimed Mariana Christian had left the apartment on Friday, July 18, in a truck with an unknown man and woman and hadn’t returned. He also expressed concern for her safety. Although not listed on the lease, the man appeared to be living in the apartment.

Although Ms. Christian was last seen on Friday, July 18, she wasn’t reported missing until Monday, July 21. After multiple failed attempts to reach her and finding her absence unusual, the friend contacted police. Officers issued an attempt-to-locate alert, and investigators took over the case.

WPD investigators identified Bearden as a person of interest. They followed leads to locate Ms. Christian, discovering evidence of her death and where her remains were left in Cottonwood Park near Armor and Bayley in Wichita.

Wichita Police officers responded to the area and located human remains. Investigators believe Bearden shot Ms. Christian.

Crime scene investigators processed Ms. Christian’s apartment and found evidence of foul play. On the morning of July 31, the Sedgwick County Regional Forensic Science Center positively identified the remains as those of Mariana Christian.

Kyle Bearden was arrested on July 30 and booked into the Sedgwick County Jail.&nbsp;

Its customers include government departments, universities and businesses, including The Associated Press.Cybersecurity expert Mike Chapple said “a slow and bumpy recovery process” is “entirely normal.”As engineers roll out fixes across the cloud computing infrastructure, the process could trigger smaller disruptions, he said.“It’s similar to what happens after a large-scale power outage: While a city’s power is coming back online, neighborhoods may see intermittent glitches as crews finish the repairs,” said Chapple, an information technology professor at the University of Notre Dame’s Mendoza College of Business.<h2>Amazon blames domain name system</h2>Amazon pinned the outage on issues related to its domain name system that converts web addresses into IP addresses, which are numeric designations that identify locations on the internet. Those addresses allow websites and apps to load on internet-connected devices.DownDetector, a website that tracks online outages, said in a Facebook post that it received over 11 million user reports of problems at more than 2,500 companies. Users reported trouble with the social media site Snapchat, the Roblox and Fortnite video games, the online broker Robinhood and the McDonald’s app, as well as Netflix, Disney+ and many other services.The cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase and the Signal chat app both said on X that they were experiencing trouble related to the outage.Amazon's own services were also affected. Users of the company's Ring doorbell cameras and Alexa-powered smart speakers reported that they were not working, while others said they were unable to access the Amazon website or download books to their Kindle.Many college and K-12 students were unable to submit or access their homework or course materials Monday because the AWS outage knocked out Canvas, a widely used educational platform.“I currently can’t grade any online assignments, and my students can’t access their online materials” because of the outage’s effect on learning-management systems, said Damien P. Williams, a professor of philosophy and data science at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.The exact number of schools impacted was not immediately known, but Canvas says on its website it is used by 50% of college and university students in North America, including all Ivy League schools in the U.S.Ohio State University informed its 70,000 students at all six campuses by email Monday morning that online course materials might be inaccessible due to the outage and that “students should connect with their instructors for any alternative plans.” By late afternoon, the system was still down, said spokesman Benjamin Johnson.<h2>Record of past outages</h2>This is not the first time issues with Amazon cloud services have caused widespread disruptions.Many popular internet services were affected by a brief&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/amazon-outage-aws-cloud-services-be93bc744e4e69d04055683830a409c3">outage in 2023</a>. AWS’s longest outage in recent history occurred in late 2021, when a wide range of companies — from airlines and auto dealerships to payment apps and video streaming services — were affected for&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/technology-business-amazoncom-inc-web-services-3ba6c35f2c86245231c03a2dc7f0c995">more than five hours</a>. Outages also happened in 2020 and&nbsp;<a href="http://apnews.com/article/32dc4dceb18a4214b23b2930ebd1e05f">2017</a>.The first signs of trouble emerged at around 3:11 a.m. Eastern time, when AWS reported on its “health dashboard” that it was “investigating increased error rates and latencies for multiple AWS services in the US-EAST-1 Region.” Later, the company reported that there were “significant error rates” and that engineers were “actively working” on the problem.Around 6 a.m. Eastern time, the company reported seeing recovery across most of the affected services and said it was seeking a “full resolution." As of midday, AWS was still working to resolve the trouble.Sixty-four internal AWS services were affected, the company said.<h2>Just a few companies provide most internet infrastructure</h2>Because much of the world now relies on three or four companies to provide the underlying infrastructure of the internet, “when there’s an issue like this, it can be really impactful” across many online services, said Patrick Burgess, a cybersecurity expert at U.K.-based BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT.“The world now runs on the cloud,” Burgess said.And because so much of the online world’s plumbing is underpinned by so few companies, when something goes wrong, “it’s very difficult for users to pinpoint what is happening because we don’t see Amazon, we just see Snapchat or Roblox,” Burgess said.“The good news is that this kind of issue is usually relatively fast" to resolve, and there’s no indication that it was caused by a cyberattack, Burgess said.“This looks like a good old-fashioned technology issue. Something’s gone wrong, and it will be fixed by Amazon,” he said.There are “well-established processes” to deal with outages at AWS, as well as rivals Google and Microsoft, Burgess said, adding that such outages are usually over in “hours rather than days.”
