Nancy K. (Cassidy) Stonebraker, 83, of Ellsworth, Kansas, passed away peacefully on June 27, 2026, in Ellsworth. Nancy was born on August 11, 1942, in Hutchinson, Kansas, to Lawrence and Myra Cassidy. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, community leader, and tireless advocate for individuals with disabilities. On October 29, 1960, she married the love of her life, David Stonebraker. Together they shared nearly 66 years of marriage, building a life centered on faith, family, and service to others.

Nancy was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters; and her beloved son Spencer Stonebraker.

She is survived by her husband David Stonebraker; her daughter Deb Gordon (Gregg) of Salina; her son Ken Stonebraker (Amy) of Salina; four grandchildren, Lindsay, Allison, Jessica, and Justin; seven cherished great-grandchildren; along with many extended family members and dear friends.

Nancy devoted much of her professional life to Citizen’s State Bank, where she served as the drive-in manager before retiring in 2003. In addition to her banking career, Nancy owned and operated her own shoe store for seven years.

Inspired by her love for her son, Spencer, who had Down syndrome, Nancy made it her life’s mission to create opportunities for individuals with disabilities. Determined that Spencer and others like him would be able to live fulfilling lives within their own community, she led the effort to bring a Bethphage group home to Ellsworth. Through her vision and perseverance, that dream became a reality for Spencer and many other individuals with disabilities and their families.

Nancy was active in the local Association for Retarded Citizens, now known as the ARC, served as an advocate for individuals with disabilities throughout Ellsworth County, and was appointed as Vice Chair to the Kansas Governor’s Task Force on mental health reform in 1988. Through her faith at the Ellsworth Methodist Church, Nancy faithfully taught a Sunday school class for individuals with disabilities for approximately 15 years, sharing God’s love through compassion, patience, and acceptance.

Nancy’s dedication to her community was recognized in many ways. She served as president of the Ellsworth Chamber of Commerce and was honored as Ellsworth’s Citizen of the Year in 1986. She was also recognized as the State of Kansas Volunteer of the Year for her outstanding service on behalf of people with disabilities.

Nancy will be remembered for her servant’s heart, steadfast faith, determination to make life better for others, and the unconditional love she gave to her family and everyone whose lives she touched. She believed every person had immeasurable worth and deserved to be treated with dignity, compassion, and love. Her kindness, generosity, and legacy of advocacy will continue to inspire all who knew her.

Kansas Department of Transportation

TOPEKA — The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) is alerting motorists on I-70, I-135 and other highways in north central Kansas that numerous traffic signs – including stop signs and other regulatory signs – are missing or damaged because of high winds the evening of Monday, June 8.

Traffic signs primarily in Saline, Ottawa, Lincoln and Ellsworth counties were impacted by the high winds.

KDOT maintenance crews are working to repair or replace missing signs while also assessing the numbers of signs that were damaged or are missing.

Motorists are asked to drive with caution in the affected areas and be aware of possible directional signs not being on the highway.

Repairing signs and determining all missing signs and replacing them could take time as many signs may need to be ordered, produced and delivered. KDOT area offices with locations that were not affected by wind damage are providing assistance in this effort.

Winds damage, remove traffic signs on north central Kansas highways

Kansas Attorney General Kris Kobach is urging Kansas residents to use caution to avoid scams by unregistered contractors following yesterday evening's storms.

Kansas experienced hail damage in Dickinson, Douglas, Ellis, Phillips, Rooks, Saline, Sherman, and Smith counties, as well as damaging winds in Butler, Chase, Dickinson, Douglas, Ellsworth, Johnson, Linn, Lyon, Marion, McPherson, Miami, Mitchell, Osage, Osborne, Ottawa, Russell, Saline and Shawnee counties.

“After a storm, our instinct is to clean up and make repairs as quickly as possible,” Kobach said. “When considering roofing work on a home or business, it is important that consumers make sure their roofing contractor is properly registered before signing any contract or having any work done.”

Consumers should request a copy of their roofing contractor’s registration certificate or the company’s registration number.

Consumers may confirm the company’s registration has an “In Good Standing” status here.

Working with a roofer that is registered is a bare minimum to help prevent problems. The attorney general’s office also recommends the following tips in dealing with any unregistered contractors, including roofers:

- Get at least three written estimates from different contractors.

- Check contractor complaint records with the Better Business Bureau here.

- Understand your payment options and right to cancel.

Staff from the attorney general’s Roofing Registration Unit have been in contact with local officials to assist in responding to roofing contractors and consumers. The requirement to register with the attorney general’s office is in addition to any other local requirements that may be imposed by cities or counties.

With few exceptions, the Kansas Roofing Contractor Registration Act requires roofing contractors to obtain a registration certificate from the Kansas Attorney General in order to legally solicit or provide commercial or residential roofing services for a fee in Kansas. It is designed to ensure that legitimate roofing contractors are complying with state requirements, such as carrying appropriate insurance, and to help prevent fly-by-night operators from taking advantage of Kansas consumers.

The attorney general requests that Kansans promptly report any unregistered person or company attempting to sell roofing services. Any Kansans, who have problems with unregistered roofing contractors, may report the occurrence to the attorney general’s Civil Division, Licensing and Inspections Unit on the website here, by calling 785.368.6644.
