Kansas man struck and killed at scene of earlier crash

RICE COUNTY—One person died in an accident just after 12:30a.m. Sunday in Rice County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 1994 Buick Roadmaster 4-door driven by Lucas D. MacLaren, 42, Chase, was northbound on Kansas 14 Highway three miles north of Sterling. The driver came upon an injury crash.

A pedestrian identified as Willie J. Sanders, 70, Wichita, was standing in the middle of the northbound lane. MacLaren attempted to brake for the crash but did not see the pedestrian. The Buick struck Sanders. 

Sanders had been driving a 2001 Acura southbound on Kansas 14. He attempted a left hand in front of a northbound 2017 Honda Pilot driven by Mark P. Klein, 62, Ellsworth.  The Acura and Honda collided in the northbound lane. After impact, the Acura came to rest on the southbound shoulder and the Honda came to rest in the west ditch.

Sanders was pronounced dead at the scene. 

EMS transported MacLaren, Klein and a passenger in Honda  Kerry A. Klein, 53, Ellsworth to Rice Community Hospital.
