Bob Dylan’s Nobel Prize in Literature might have its detractors (should musicians qualify for their song lyrics?) but the award does speak to the globally-recognized artistic legacy of the folk-rock scene that developed in the 1950’s and ‘60’s. But if Dylan did earn the Nobel, this documentary from filmmakers Karen O’Connor, Miri Navasky, and Maeve O’Boyle make a compelling case that one of Dylan’s contemporaries (and a former romantic and creative partner) is equally deserving: Joan Baez.

Following her final world tour four years ago, this film showcases the breathtakingly eclectic nature of Baez’s genius: not just as a songwriter and singer, but as a poet, writer, and visual artist. Her intellect encompasses unique self-awareness and an abiding interest in the relationships between famous figures and the public. And of course, her social activism was always a big part of her persona, and we see archival footage showing her genuine commitment to the Civil Rights Movement and other progressive causes. Rather than come across as an ivory tower, “out of touch” liberal stereotype, though, Baez is extraordinarily empathetic and willing to withhold final judgment on her own perceptions—including, intriguingly, ambiguous memories of childhood sexual abuse that corroborate the stories of her younger sister (and talented folk singer in her own right), Mimi Fariña. This is a fascinating portrait of artist fully aware of herself and the world, not just an imaginative interpreter (and incisive critic) of society.

The title comes from an evocative self-declaration from one of Joan’s youthful writings: “I’m not a saint, I am a noise.” An odd sentiment for someone fondly remembered for her angelic voice and seemingly gentle nature… but also hinting at the emotional turbulence she continually held at bay, and transfused into her art, lifting the world’s spirits and speaking truth to power with impressive calmness and clarity. This film is unrated, containing some mature content and runs a duration of 113 minutes.

Film descriptions are written by friend and cinema supporter, Dave Cooper.
