Wind and warmer temperatures, NWS-Wichita five day weather forecast

A prolonged period of widespread rain and embedded thunderstorms will impact the region this evening through Sunday. Locally heavy rainfall may support areas of minor low-land flooding. Pea-size hail and gusty winds are possible this evening.

Despite the month ending on a warm note, much of the region still averaged colder than normal for the month. In fact, Wichita experienced it's coldest January since 1996, Salina since 1985, and Russell since 1993.

NWS-Wichita five day weather forecast

According to the Wichita National Weather Service, areas of patchy fog will continue this morning across central and south-central Kansas.

Visibility may be reduced to around one mile at times. 

NWS Meteorologists also forecast light rain in some regions of south-central parts of the state, and freezing fog may create slick spots throughout the morning.

Light snow and flurries will spread across central and eastern Kansas from mid-morning through the afternoon. An inch or so of accumulation is possible in central with trace amounts further south.

Freezing cold temperatures, light snow — NWS Monday Forecast

After rounds of snow across the state, multiple bouts of arctic air will impact most Kansans this weekend and early next week, with windchills in the 20s below zero.

Wichita National Weather Service Meteorologist Chris Jakub said temperatures will fall dangerously low Friday evening and Saturday morning, following that pattern through Tuesday morning.

"A daytime high of around five degrees on Saturday, a high of two degrees on Sunday, Monday, four degrees, so we're going to have low single-digit highs," Jakub said. "We're going to be setting some records with this."

According to Jakub, Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday, all have chances to break records from as far back as 1909.

Alongside the frigid conditions, windchills will dip to around 20 below zero throughout the weekend, lasting until Tuesday afternoon.

These conditions can become deadly — Jakub said that only 30 minutes of skin exposure to the cold can cause frostbite and hypothermia for those venturing outside.

Jakub recommended that staying indoors is the safest place for residents, but this weekend can become deadly for those stranded outside.

Forecasted flurries of snow will also move into Kansas alongside the frigid temperatures.

Many Salinans either live without a home or become stranded outside during harsh winter conditions, causing frostbite, hypothermia and sometimes death.&nbsp;

Due to this, Saline County Emergency Management created an <a href="https://www.salinecountyks.gov/alerts">information hub</a> for all Salinans in need.&nbsp;

"We have a banner on the County website that lists all the weather updates and all of our resources that are available for any condition that might come out of a winter storm," said Saline County Emergency Management Director Michelle Weis. "If you need places to go, they're listed — same-day shelters and their hours."

Often, winter weather causes power outages in neighborhoods across Saline County, plunging homes into dangerous conditions for children or senior residents.

"Be a good neighbor and check on your friends," Weis said. "If you're out of power... the mall is always a great place to just hang out, walk around and burn a couple hours, and it's free."

Weis mentioned a few other community locations and services but stressed that finding somewhere warm to go is critical.

In Salina, some community resources for individuals and families in need include the Salina Salvation Army, the Salina Grace Foundation and the Ashby House.

Ashby House serves women, families and children challenged by poverty by offering various programs — from emergency housing to financial and employment coaching.

Ashby House Executive Director Darrell Burgoon said the current Ashby House emergency and transitional shelters have very limited space but have plans to triple that capacity in the next few years.&nbsp;

In the fall of 2019, Ashby House began a project for a new emergency shelter made from a residential home, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, all progress halted until recently.

&nbsp;"From the minute that I got hired a year and a half ago it was my goal to get that thing finished," Burgoon said. "So we hope to complete that house by this summer."

The house would have enough space for 22 adults and numerous children with an expansive basement.

Burgoon said even though the Ashby House's emergency shelter may have little availability, staff will help residents who visit them for help by directing them to other community resources.

KDOT reminds motorists to drive with caution and give crews room to work as they continue to clear the roadways. Travelers are cautioned not to drive around employees, signs and gates marking these closed highways. Doing so may result in a citation or fine.

UPDATED: Winter weather closes highways in north central Kansas

All highways in north central Kansas have been reopened following the recent winter storm, according to the Kansas Department of Transportation.

Some highway closures were necessary due to so many vehicles sliding off the roadways or being stranded on the road. KDOT reminds motorists to drive with caution and give crews room to work as they continue to clear the roadways. Winds are causing snow to blow back and drift on highways, and some areas may be snow packed or icy.

Another round of winter weather is expected later this week. Motorists are encouraged to stay up to date with road conditions and prepare for the incoming weather.

The "Emergency Accident Reporting Plan" has been implemented due to severe weather and/or hazardous driving conditions as the number of motor vehicle accidents exceeds the Department's ability to respond in a timely manner.

Eligible accidents: Any non-hit and run, non-personal injury motor vehicle accident that does not require towing, and does not involve alcohol or drugs.

Driver requirements: Exchange personal information with the other drivers) involved or property owner.

SPD enacts emergency accident reporting plan

Even though Friday's snow just settled across most of the western two-thirds of the state, another chilly storm is on its heels, with possible whiteout conditions for early next week.

According to Wichita National Weather Service Meteorologist Venessa Pearce, the weather system will impact most of Kansas, beginning as rain showers on Sunday with temperatures in the low 40s.

Rain showers will continue on Monday before transitioning to a winter weather mix that will impact the northwestern half of Kansas.

Then, during the later hours of Monday night, the storm system will transition from rain to heavy snow, with possible blizzard conditions for north central Kansas and western Kansas.

"The worst part of the timeframe is Monday evening and Monday night into Tuesday morning," Pearce said. "There could be some potential challenges on the Tuesday morning commute."

Another Wichita NWS meteorologist, James Cuellar, provided a forecast earlier in the week on Wednesday, Jan. 3.&nbsp;

The models then forecasted a broader scope of the storm, but Cuellar said the storm system would be much different than the November storm and the recent Friday morning snowfall.

"It'll be a completely different, completely new system," Cuellar said. "It's going to be a little bit different — it'll have a lot more moisture. That's going to be the most significant difference."

By Saturday morning, NWS forecasters found another significant impact from the storm in its models — high windspeeds early Tuesday morning with a single-digit windchill.

"Most of the precipitation should exit by Tuesday morning," Pearce said. "But, because we expect winds with sustained speeds of 25 to 30 mph with gusts approaching 45 mph, any fallen snow could drift and blow around on Tuesday."

"We've got wind chills on Tuesday morning in the single digits, around five degrees."

Pearce stressed that with the hazardous conditions on Monday and Tuesday, residents prepare by altering schedules and packing supplies when necessary to travel.

Critical travel supplies for the car include a thick winter coat, snow boots, water, small food items and extra clothing items.

"Make sure to stay tuned to the latest forecast as things change," Pearce said. "Consider adjusting different plans for that time if at all possible."

Friday morning's snowstorm brought Kansas another round of multiple inches of snow.&nbsp;

According to Wichita NWS, the Wichita Dwight D. Eisenhower broke the record snowfall set in 1929 at 2.6 inches, with 3.3 inches of accumulation on Friday.

NWS early-week storm forecast and Friday snow totals

Snowfall will impact most parts of western and southern Kansas beginning on Thursday evening and carrying over into most of Friday.

Widespread snow will reach cities like Wichita, Hutchinson and Pratt by late Thursday, and periods of heavy snow will be possible across that region during the morning commute.

Most of Kansas has seen increased precipitation this winter, with much of it contributing to diminishing the drought conditions for many residents. 

This Friday, another weather system will move into the state, bringing about an inch of snow to most parts of western and central Kansas.

According to Wichita National Weather Service, NWS, Meteorologist James Cuellar, Kansans have seen more snow this winter compared to past years.

"Last year we were in a La Niña, and that's why we were so dry the entire winter," Cuellar said. "We already had that big snow event in November, so that's pretty much already gotten out average for a lot of places."

Cuellar said Friday's weather system will move into the state late Thursday night into the early hours of Friday morning. Forecasted temperatures will drop overnight on Thursday from low 40s to high 30s, with a high of 41 degrees on Friday.

Most of western and north central Kansas may receive up to an inch of snow, while a wintery mix of rain and snow is more likely near the Kansas-Oklahoma border.

"Northeast Kansas will miss out a little bit on it, but they could still get at least a trace, a trace to an inch," Cuellar said.

The weather system will impact travelers on Friday morning, with roadways becoming slick from chillier precipitation across the state. 

Elevated roadways like bridges and interchanges will be dangerous in adverse weather conditions.

National Weather Service snow totals across the state

Instead of a 50-degree Christmas like anticipated, Kansas may see a wintery Christmas this year, with snow probabilities for Salina hovering at 64%.

Much cooler air than initially forecasted will arrive behind a cold front on Monday, allowing rain to change to snow across central and northern Kansas.

Christmas Day has an increasing probability of snow accumulating over northern Kansas, likely into Tuesday morning.

Road conditions may become slick, especially along and north of Interstate 70.

From a balmy to possibly snowy Christmas for Kansans

Most of central Kansas received a soggy Christmas Eve, with some regions of Kansas receiving more than an inch of rain.

Salina topped at 0.75 inches of rain by 7 a.m. Sunday morning, with McPherson reaching 1.39 inches of rain.

Showers will continue throughout the day in some areas of Kansas.

Multiple inches for Salina — many more across the state: Snowfall totals this weekend

Temperatures plummeted this week in Salina, with the recorded temperature from Saturday, Nov. 18, at 70 degrees and this Saturday, Nov. 25, with an expected low of 23 degrees.

Randy Picking, 910 KINA Coffee Talk Co-Host, said during the morning talk show, "Four inches is what the models that I follow are forecasting. The good news is, wind is not going to be a problem."

Wind chills may not be a problem on Saturday while multiple inches of snow accumulates. Still, according to Saline County Emergency Management Deputy Director Natasha Cundy, Sunday morning would be frosty.

"Sunday, the windchill is going to be in the single digits, so be prepared to bundle up if you're going outside," Cundy said. "Remember, if you have to shovel snow, it will be heavy due to the wet snow conditions."

Current predictions from the Wichita National Weather Service show a few more inches of snowfall for the Salina region, with expected precipitation to accumulate quickly during the day.

Sunday and Monday will follow with single-digit wind chills during the early morning hours, followed by afternoon temperatures around 40 degrees.

According to Wichita NWS Meteorologist Vanessa Pearce, the predicted snowfall for Salina will be around five to seven inches.

Some parts of the state may see more of a wintery mix than snow, but snowpack is likely for north and western Kansas towns.

"We're thinking it'll be snow up there — you won't see that mix," Pearce said. "The mix will be more across South Central into Southeast Kansas, kind of closer to the Kansas turnpike."

Wichita NWS predicted that 3 p.m. would be the peak of Saturday's storm,  with a predicted high temperature of 33 degrees.

This storm will likely cause reduced visibility in the afternoon, and the thick snowfall will cause slick conditions for motor vehicles.

"It's falling during the daytime hours when people are out and about or trying to do different activities," Pearce said. "Especially with the rates that are going to be occurring — the snowfall rates are going to cause that accumulation."

Pearce warned against unnecessary travel during the afternoon storm, encouraging residents to push plans to Sunday when the snow will have entirely left the state.

The predicted temperatures for Sunday remain in the low 40s, but travel should be safer due to clear skies and drier driving conditions.

"If you can, adjust your travel plans to a different day or time," Pearce said. "That would be highly encouraged — avoid any kind of going out if you don't need to on Saturday."

 </figure>By OLIVIA BERGMEIER Salina PostTemperatures plummeted this week in Salina, with the recorded temperature from Saturday, Nov. 18, at 70 degrees and this Saturday, Nov. 25, with an expected low of 23 degrees.Randy Picking, 910 KINA Coffee Talk Co-Host, said during the morning talk show, "Four inches is what the models that I follow are forecasting. The good news is, wind is not going to be a problem."Wind chills may not be a problem on Saturday while multiple inches of snow accumulates. Still, according to Saline County Emergency Management Deputy Director Natasha Cundy, Sunday morning would be frosty."Sunday, the windchill is going to be in the single digits, so be prepared to bundle up if you're going outside," Cundy said. "Remember, if you have to shovel snow, it will be heavy due to the wet snow conditions."Current predictions from the Wichita National Weather Service show a few more inches of snowfall for the Salina region, with expected precipitation to accumulate quickly during the day.Sunday and Monday will follow with single-digit wind chills during the early morning hours, followed by afternoon temperatures around 40 degrees.According to Wichita NWS Meteorologist Vanessa Pearce, the predicted snowfall for Salina will be around five to seven inches.Some parts of the state may see more of a wintery mix than snow, but snowpack is likely for north and western Kansas towns."We're thinking it'll be snow up there — you won't see that mix," Pearce said. "The mix will be more across South Central into Southeast Kansas, kind of closer to the Kansas turnpike."<figure>

 </figure>Wichita NWS predicted that 3 p.m. would be the peak of Saturday's storm, with a predicted high temperature of 33 degrees.This storm will likely cause reduced visibility in the afternoon, and the thick snowfall will cause slick conditions for motor vehicles."It's falling during the daytime hours when people are out and about or trying to do different activities," Pearce said. "Especially with the rates that are going to be occurring — the snowfall rates are going to cause that accumulation."Pearce warned against unnecessary travel during the afternoon storm, encouraging residents to push plans to Sunday when the snow will have entirely left the state.The predicted temperatures for Sunday remain in the low 40s, but travel should be safer due to clear skies and drier driving conditions."If you can, adjust your travel plans to a different day or time," Pearce said.
