NWS-Wichita issues heat advisory from noon to 8 p.m. today

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a heat advisory effective from noon to 8 p.m. CDT on Friday, June 28, 2024. The advisory includes numerous counties and cities across central, south-central, and southeast Kansas.

Residents in the following areas should prepare for extreme heat conditions: Russell, Lincoln, Barton, Ellsworth, Saline, Rice, McPherson, Marion, Chase, Reno, Harvey, Butler, Greenwood, Woodson, Allen, Kingman, Sedgwick, Harper, Sumner, Cowley, Elk, Wilson, Neosho, Chautauqua, Montgomery, and Labette counties. Major cities affected include Wichita, Salina, Hutchinson, McPherson, El Dorado, and Great Bend.

Advisory Details:

What: Heat index values are expected to reach up to 109 degrees Fahrenheit. The highest heat indices are anticipated in south-central and southeast Kansas

When: Friday, June 28, 2024, from noon to 8 PM CDT.. Impacts: High temperatures and humidity levels may lead to heat-related illnesses.

The NWS urges residents to take the following precautions to stay safe during the advisory:
