ST. LOUIS (AP) — Maikel Garcia homered, doubled and scored three times, and the Kansas City Royals beat the St. Louis Cardinals 7-5 in the second game of a day-night doubleheader on Thursday night.

Royals starter Cole Ragans pitched three innings in his return from the 15-day injured list with a left groin strain. He allowed five runs on five hits, struck out four and walked three.

Angel Zerpa (3-0) pitched three scoreless innings in relief, giving up one hit, one walk and striking out four. Carlos Estévez earned his 18th save in 21 tries.

Cardinals starter Matthew Liberatore (3-5) was pulled after four-plus innings with fatigue-related issues. He allowed a season-high seven runs on eight hits.

The Cardinals rallied to take game one of the doubleheader 6-5 on Willson Contreras' RBI single in the tenth.

Garcia's two-run homer in the first gave the Royals a 2-0 lead in the nightcap.

Freddy Fermin hit a curveball 406 feet into the third deck in left field to lead off the third, sparking a three-run rally. Jonathan India singled and scored and Garcia doubled and scored on a Salvador Perez single to give the Royals a 5-1 lead.

Contreras singled home the Cardinals' first run in the first inning and jump started a four-run third with a two-run double. Nolan Arenado followed with a two-run homer to tie the game at 5-all.

Nick Loftin's RBI single scored Mark Canha to break the tie in the fourth. Garcia walked and scored on a Perez single in the fifth.

Liberatore left the game after surrendering a leadoff walk to Garcia in the fifth.

Garcia's homer gave the Royals a first-inning home run for the third straight game.

The Royals are at the Chicago White Sox on Friday night to open a series, while the Cardinals are home against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

<a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/e9a8aa85-570d-4fe6-ad71-892ef5d79ecd?elinkdata=26986">Tyler Favretto</a> and <a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/ef875b48-ea54-4770-bdbb-7aebd6921d10?elinkdata=26986">Ritter Steinmann</a> have been named as 2025 NAIA Baseball All-Americans as announced by the NAIA and the American Baseball Coaches Association.

Favretto was stellar for the Coyotes finishing the season batting .423, which ranked No. 32 in the NAIA. He had a .579 on base percentage, which ranked fourth best in the NAIA and his .755 slugging average ranked 38th in the country. Favretto finished the season with 63 walks, which was the second highest total in the NAIA this season after finishing tied for the most walks in the country a year ago. He had 19 doubles on the season which tied him for 24th in the NAIA and hit 14 homeruns on the season as he finished with 35 extra base hits on the season that ranked No. 28 in the NAIA.

Steinmann was excellent as the closer for the Coyotes this season. He made 28 appearances, some in middle relief as well as closer, tossing 61 innings with 77 strikeouts and a 1.38 WHIP. He averaged 11.36 strikeouts per game. His 28 appearances was the second highest total in the NAIA this season. He led the country in saves with 10, more than double of any other player in the NAIA. His innings pitched total ranked among the country's best among relief pitchers. His strikeout total ranked No. 75 in the NAIA among all pitchers. His strikeouts per nine innings average ranked No. 24 in the NAIA.

The teams are selected by members of the American Baseball Coaches Association and the NAIA-Baseball Coaches Association All-America Committee. Starting in the 2024 season, the NAIA started recognizing a third All-America team. This year's All-America teams include 28 student-athletes who participated in the 2025 Avista NAIA World Series in Lewiston, Idaho.

Q: What areas of improvement are you looking for in Matt Araiza?

TOUB:&nbsp;“That’s a good question. We’re looking for him (Matt Araiza) – he’s got a bomb of a leg; he can hit the ball long. We need more hang time on his punts, more vertical power and then we need more accuracy in the pooch area, which is getting balls inside the 20. That’s what he’s really emphasizing during this offseason.”

Q: How does the change in the kickoff return rule change what you’re looking for in a return guy?

TOUB:&nbsp;“It’s going to change – it’s not going to change the style of the guy, but it’s going to change how many reps we get because everybody’s going to kick it into the target zone now. You can’t afford to kick a touchback (and) give up the ball to the 35 (yard line) automatically. The average last year throughout the whole season I think was 29.5 yards getting the ball out that far, so it was kind of a wash to kick a touchback, you’re not giving up anything. Now, that extra five yards, that’s going to make all the difference in the world. It’s good for special teams now. Kickoff team, you have to kick it in there (the target zone) every time. Kick return, you’re going to get returns every time. I think it’s going to be 85 percent returns – to 90 percent so it’s going to be a lot more fun for the fans, better for special teams coaches and players and jobs so it’s all good.”

Q: Do you need more speed back there?

TOUB:&nbsp;“You have to make sure that you have guys that are good at it (returning kicks). I mean, the speed is always something that you’re – you’re always looking for that dynamic guy that can field it with speed. Brashard (Smith) brings that to the table, the new rookie we got. I like him back there – (Jalen) Royals has talent and then Nohl (Williams), he’s done it too in college, so we have a lot of guys, with the young guys to work with.”

We’ll find out a little bit more about him when we get pads on, and we can go live but he’s done a pretty solid job for us right now.”

Q: Can you share your initial reaction to the other draft picks?

SPAGNUOLO:&nbsp;“When all four (Omarr Norman-Lott, Ashton Gillotte, Nohl Williams and Jeffrey Bassa) of those guys kind of came in – and I was happy to get all four of them. I thought they were all similar and that they – when we evaluated them and talked with them, they all have football – (they) get it. They all love the game of football. I really like – I think Ashton (Gillotte) is a really good knee bender, I think Omarr’s (Norman-Lott) got a lot of power to him, Jeff (Bassa) is a change of direction guy and really smart. In the rookie – I don’t know if you guys noticed (but) in the rookie minicamp we put him (Jeff Bassa) at mike linebacker. We knew he was going to be outside, but he learns the whole defense. I thought he did a great job at that then we’ve talked about Nohl (Williams) so I’m hoping all those guys can help us. We’ll see.”

Q: Do you feel like Omarr Norman-Lott can end up contributing a lot this season?

SPAGNUOLO:&nbsp;“That’s the hope. Yeah, that’s the hope. There isn’t anything that has happened right now that would lead me to say that he would be able to do something for us.”

It reminds me of last year where he was going into this part of the year where – the second year he just looks like – even with Xavier (Worthy) right now, you can tell he knows where he’s going so those guys are looking sharp.”

NAGY:&nbsp;“Well, we talk about talk is cheap, right? You can’t talk about it; you have to be able to do it. I think it’s a mentality of every day in practice trying to make sure you stress not only the importance of talking about it but then doing it in practice. There were times that we were but I think it’s our job as coaches to emphasis it more and then let these guys go out there. Then their mindset too is just cutting it loose every now and then. Not everyone is going to be perfect and incomplete, but it’s equity.”

⚾️Royals, Cardinals postponed; split doubleheader Thursday

SPRINGDALE, Ark. (June 3, 2025)—Aaron Sabato singled in the tying run and scored as the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth of a 2-1 Wichita Wind Surge victory over the Northwest Arkansas Naturals at Arvest Ballpark. On the backs of a quality start by Aaron Rozek and the late rally, Wichita jumps up to sole possession of second place in the Texas League North, a game back of the Springfield Cardinals.

Rozek and Frank Mozzicato didn’t let in any runs as the Wind Surge and Naturals starters. Rozek ended his night throwing a quality start of six innings of five-hit baseball with four strikeouts. Jaylen Nowlin also pitched a scoreless seventh inning of relief as the first man out of the visiting bullpen.&nbsp;

After Wichita stranded the bases loaded and Northwest Arkansas left two in scoring position in the top and bottom of the seventh, Dustin Dickerson laid down a sacrifice bunt right in front of the plate in the home half of the eighth. Javier Vaz ran over to third and later scored on an infield throwing error to give the Naturals a 1-0 lead late in the ballgame.

Sabato singled the opposite way to score Ricardo Olivar and tie the game in the top of the ninth. Amid a later mound visit, Sabato took off toward the empty bag on third and came in to cross the plate on a wild throw from the pitcher for a 2-1 Wind Surge lead.&nbsp;

Cody Laweryson took over for the bottom of the ninth, and then Rubel Cespedes gobbled up a hit off the handle of Justin Johnson with the lead runner heading toward third. MANHATTAN, Kan. – Five Wildcats qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championship on Saturday (May 31) on the final day of the NCAA West Preliminary at E.B. Cushing Stadium in Bryan-College Station, Texas.

Senior Shalom Olotu qualified for her second event at nationals in the women’s triple jump, juniors Sharie Enoe and Tamaiah Koonce each earned bids in the women’s high jump and discus, respectively, while fellow juniors Safhia Hinds and Jourdin Edwards collected nods in the women’s 400-meter hurdles.

All five are advancing to the NCAA Outdoor Championship for the first time in their respective careers. Olotu had already qualified in the women’s long jump on Thursday (May 29) with a new personal-best mark.

With its five national bids on Saturday, Kansas State will send a total of nine athletes in eight events to the NCAA Championship, which is set for Wednesday-Saturday, June 11-14 at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. They will be joined by senior Monique Hardy (women’s hammer), sophomore Riley Marx (men’s javelin), freshman Selva Prabhu (men’s triple jump) and senior Emil Uhlin (men’s decathlon).

For the second time in three days, Olotu posted a personal-best mark to qualify for her second event at the national meet to place 11th and earn one of the 12 qualifying spots in the triple jump. Her leap of 13.45m (44’-1 ½”) was not only a personal high but ranks as the No. 5 all-time outdoor mark in K-State history. It is the best performance by any Wildcat in the event in four years since Chantoba Bright recorded a jump of 13.53m (44’-4 ¾”) at the 2021 Guyana Senior National Championships.

Olotu had already qualified in the long jump on Thursday (May 29) with a new personal-best mark of 6.44m (21’ 1 ½”) (0.7) to finish ninth. Her performance ranked as the No. 4 best outdoor mark in school history in the event, as she recorded a new personal best in the event for the first time in two years.

Koonce placed sixth in the discus with a season-best mark of 55.99m (183’-8”). It was her best throw in the event in more than a year since her personal-best toss of 56.14m (184’-2”) at the 2024 Ward Haylett Invitational. It was also more than 10 feet better than her effort at the 2025 Big 12 Championship (52.88m/173’-6”) and nearly 3 feet better than her mark at last year’s West Preliminary.

Enoe continued her impressive spring in the high jump, placing fourth in the event with a mark of 1.84m (6’-0 ½”). She was one of four athletes to hit 1.84m on her first attempt but placed fourth overall due hitting her previous heights of 1.76m (5’9 ¼”) and 1.81m (5’-11 ¼”) on her second attempt. She has now recorded a mark of 1.8m in the high jump in all four outdoor meets, including her season-best mark of 1.88m (6’-2”) to finish as the runner-up at the 2025 Big 12 Championship.

Enoe will look to replicate her First Team All-America honors in the high jump at the NCAA Indoor Championships, where she tied for eighth place with clearance of 1.85m.

Hinds and Edwards each qualified in the women’s 400-meter hurdles with fourth- and seventh-place finishes, respectively, while senior Ludivine Aubert placed 19th with a time of 58.38. Hinds recorded a time of 56.34, which was her second-fastest mark of the season and the fastest since winning the 2025 Big 12 Championship in 55.90 seconds. Edwards ran a personal-best time of 56.73, which represented the fourth- fastest time in K-State’s all-time top-10.

The NCAA Championship kicks off Wednesday, June 11 with Marx in the finals of the men’s javelin and Uhlin in the first five events of the decathlon. She was one of four athletes to hit 1.84m on her first attempt but placed fourth overall due hitting her previous heights of 1.76m (5’9 ¼”) and 1.81m (5’-11 ¼”) on her second attempt. Five Wildcats Qualify for Nationals on NCAA West Preliminary Final Day

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Zach McKinstry hit a leadoff triple in the third inning and scored on Kris Bubic's wild pitch to lift the Detroit Tigers over the Kansas City Royals 1-0 on Sunday.

Riley Greene had two of Detroit's five hits as the Tigers bounced back from a 1-0 loss to Kansas City on Saturday that ended their five-game winning streak. They took two of three from their AL Central rivals for their 14th series win this season.

Detroit entered June with the best record in the majors for the first time since 2006.

Tigers starter Keider Montero permitted seven hits in 4 2/3 innings. Chase Lee (2-0) got four outs for the win, and Will Vest earned his ninth save.

Bubic (5-3) tied a career high with nine strikeouts in seven innings, giving up four hits with two walks. The left-hander has fanned nine batters in three of his last four starts.

Salvador Perez had three of Kansas City's nine hits, but the Royals stranded eight runners. They have scored four or fewer runs in 50 of 60 games this season.

Kansas City infielder Maikel Garcia was scratched from the starting lineup with right thumb soreness.

McKinstry scored when Bubic's sweeper in the dirt deflected off Perez and rolled near the Royals' dugout on the first-base side.

In the last 12 games between the division foes, 10 have been decided by two or fewer runs.

RHP Jack Flaherty (3-6, 3.94 ERA) starts Monday night when the Tigers continue their seven-game trip against the Chicago White Sox.
