For 102 years the people who knew and loved her were blessed by Mabel’s presence on this earth. Mabel Erline Patterson passed from this life on February 17, 2022 in Kearney with family by her side. Private family graveside services will be held at Hillcrest Cemetery in Florence, KS. Visitation will be 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 22, 2022 at O’Brien Straatmann Redinger Funeral Home in Kearney. Mabel was born at her parents’ home in Florence, Kansas, on May 13, 1919 and was the first child of Elmer and Irene (Bowlby) Johnson. Her siblings were LaVere and Jim. She spent her early life in the small town of Florence, graduating from Florence High School in 1937 where she was part of the “Wicked Five,” a group of fun-loving girls known for their youthful antics. She married John Martin in a double wedding ceremony with good friends Charles (Chuck) and Lenora (Pankratz) Graham on September 30, 1939 in Florence. In the spring of 1940 John was killed in a car accident and the following October their son John was born.

In Florence she served the Methodist Church as treasurer, worked at Kansas Power and Light company and worked in her parents’ business, Johnson’s Variety Store. She also worked for a short time as a “parts runner” at the Great Bend, Kansas Army Airfield during World War II. On April 14, 1946, she married James Howard (Pat) Patterson who was a widower with a young son, James (Jim) Jr. The family made their home in Arkansas City, Kansas, moving to El Dorado, Kansas in the late 1940s. Their daughter, Barbara Jean was born there. Pat worked as an auto parts man at Barnes Motor and later as the auto parts manager for McClure Motor Company. Mabel was a homemaker and worked at the El Dorado High School cafeteria and sold Avon. In 1974 they moved to Great Bend, Kansas, where Pat worked for Standish Ford. He passed away in 1984. Mabel moved to Fremont, Nebraska in 1986 to help her daughter and son-in-law with their children which included newborn twins. In 1987 she moved to Kearney when Jean’s family moved there. Mabel was a wonderful daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, homemaker and cook. She was well known for her chocolate chip cookies, cinnamon rolls, sweet pickles and pickle relish.

 She volunteered in each church she was a member of and you could always find her in the kitchen helping prepare for wedding receptions, church potlucks, funeral dinners, etc. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and volunteered many hours for Legion activities, including cemetery flag placement. 

She and Pat loved camping and spent many happy days with friends who enjoyed the same - Kenneth &amp;and Frances Hurd, Abe and Zena Martin, Elmer and Norma Davis, Noel and Martha Talkington and many others. She and Pat were members of the Bluestem Campers and Good Sam camping clubs. She also enjoyed playing cards and bingo. She was very independent and wanted to do for herself as much as possible. She was always concerned for her family and other people and tried to help wherever and whenever she could.

She lived on her own until breaking a hip in April, 2018. In July, 2018 she moved to Homestead Assisted Living and after breaking the other hip in November, 2018 she moved to Mother Hull Home where she was lovingly cared for. She celebrated her 100th birthday at Mother Hull Home with friends and family in May, 2019. She was preceded in death by her parents, her two husbands, her brother and sister, her son Jim; and daughter-in-law Sheila Patterson. Survivors include children John L. Patterson, Jean and Jake Jacobson; daughter-in-law Carol Patterson; grandchildren Mike Patterson, Megan Patterson, Briana Patterson and her children Annabella and James, Benjamin Jacobson, Amy Jacobson, and Connor Jacobson. December 22, 1937 ~ February 19, 2022 (age 84)

With the passing of&nbsp;Joan Ruth Totten Seim Kogler&nbsp;on Feb 19, 2022, (age 84) we lost a kindred spirit, infectious smile, bright eyes that could see through anything and anybody, an engaging wit, and compassionate friend who was more interested in helping others than herself.

Joan was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother. 

She was preceded in death by her brother Wayne Totten, d.1945; mother Ester Gentry Totten, d.1952; father Harry Totten, d.1957; first husband Gale Seim, d.1959; stepmother Alvina Schwartz Totten, d.1986; sister Jean Totten Huff, d. 2003; and second husband Stan Kogler, d.2020.

Joan was born in Shelbyville, Indiana on December 22, 1937.&nbsp; Her family moved to Udall, Kansas when she was three following her grandfather who was a Methodist minister.&nbsp; They soon relocated to Gypsum, KS. where her father found work as a prison guard in the Falun WWII prison camp.&nbsp; Those “dumb-assed boys” of Gypsum never knew what hit them from third grade on!

Joan grew up quick when her mother lost her life on the operating table at the young age of 44.&nbsp; Joan, only 15, she had to be “mom” to younger sister Jean, and homemaker for the family.&nbsp; To help make ends meet, she made their clothes, becoming an excellent seamstress, even teaching 4-H sewing later in life.&nbsp; She also helped the Ade’s process chickens for the Abilene Hospital, even to the point of chopping off the chickens heads and fully dressing them!&nbsp; She graduated from Gypsum High school as valedictorian of her class, was a cheerleader, baton twirler, played both the bass and snare drums and was rarely challenged in ping-pong during her lunch hour!

Soon after high school she married Gale Seim and bore two children, Larry of Southport, NC, and Pam of Steamboat Springs, CO.&nbsp; The tragic farm tractor death of Gale left Joan a widow at age 21.&nbsp; 

Fortunately for the young family, a great friend, Stan Kogler, came to their rescue and married Joan, raising her kids, and their own son, Duane of Vancouver, WA.

With their children all graduating from college and pursuing their own careers, Stan and Joan continued living on the farm near Kipp, KS for over 60 years.&nbsp; During that time, along with farming, they ran a successful country electrical and plumbing business, with Stan providing the knowledge and labor, and Joan “doing the books.”&nbsp; Not engaging enough for Joan, she also worked as a legal secretary, drove the kids’ school bus, and of course, was an excellent homemaker and cook.&nbsp; Her cinnamon rolls and pies were used to bribe Stan to do work on “their” house and delight the kids’ college friends and hunting buddies!&nbsp;

Joan also had a love for drawing and drafted the family’s country home.&nbsp; That led to an interest in artistic painting and she learned several types, but thoroughly enjoyed oil painting.&nbsp; Stan had given her painting lessons and even converted the home’s one car garage to a painting studio where she perfected her craft and even taught classes. Her work was published in local newspapers/mags and exhibited in fairs, where she won several awards, including Wheat Hearts Lifetime Achievement award.&nbsp; Over a 40 year period, she recreated over 100 renderings and detailed over 300 porcelain “Santas” she gave as gifts to family and friends.&nbsp;

Her love for painting and her painting friends took her around the country attending workshops, with favorite experiences being Canyon de Chelly, AZ and 4WD jeep rides around Ouray, CO.&nbsp; Her travels also developed an interest in diverse nativity sets and she amassed over 500 pieces, many from her painting friends and family, that she would display in her home and decorate her Christmas tree.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Some of her favorite memories were attending athletic events of her kids and family vacations to Indiana, Colorado and California, and of course visiting her kids and grand-kids living in Illinois, Oklahoma, Texas, California, Connecticut, Washington, Colorado and North Carolina.&nbsp; She also enjoyed her 50th wedding anniversary when the kids surprised her with a family cruise through the inside passage of Alaska.

Joan lived a full life, despite numerous family deaths in her early years, and struggles later with heart condition and diabetes that limited her mobility.&nbsp; But her memory and vision were exceptional right until the end, and the family was able to reminisce personally and via Facetime many great memories.&nbsp; She will be missed by family and friends here on earth, but looks forward to seeing all of those that preceded her, hoping that Gale and Stan will be fighting for her affection!&nbsp;

Joan leaves behind son Larry of Southport, NC, daughter-in-law Laura and grandchildren Michael and Meredith Smith (Michael); daughter Pam Beardmore of Steamboat Springs CO, son-in-law David, grandchild Allison Nash (Ben) and great-grandchildren Charli, Kimbal and Sloane; grandchildren Madison and Emily; son Duane of Vancouver, WA, daughter-in-law Karen, and grandchildren Mathew, Daniel and Katie; and many nieces and nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, February 25, 2022, at the Trinity United Methodist Church, Salina, KS. Burial will be in the Gypsum City Cemetery, Gypsum, KS. Friends may call at the Ryan Mortuary on Thursday, February 24, 2022, from 4 until 8 p.m. that evening where the family will receive friends from 4 until 6 p.m.

She was preceded in death by her brother Wayne Totten, d.1945; mother Ester Gentry Totten, d.1952; father Harry Totten, d.1957; first husband Gale Seim, d.1959; stepmother Alvina Schwartz Totten, d.1986; sister Jean Totten Huff, d. 2003; and second husband Stan Kogler, d.2020.Joan was born in Shelbyville, Indiana on December 22, 1937.&nbsp; Her family moved to Udall, Kansas when she was three following her grandfather who was a Methodist minister.&nbsp; They soon relocated to Gypsum, KS. where her father found work as a prison guard in the Falun WWII prison camp.&nbsp; Those “dumb-assed boys” of Gypsum never knew what hit them from third grade on!Joan grew up quick when her mother lost her life on the operating table at the young age of 44.&nbsp; Joan, only 15, she had to be “mom” to younger sister Jean, and homemaker for the family.&nbsp; To help make ends meet, she made their clothes, becoming an excellent seamstress, even teaching 4-H sewing later in life.&nbsp; She also helped the Ade’s process chickens for the Abilene Hospital, even to the point of chopping off the chickens heads and fully dressing them!&nbsp; She graduated from Gypsum High school as valedictorian of her class, was a cheerleader, baton twirler, played both the bass and snare drums and was rarely challenged in ping-pong during her lunch hour!Soon after high school she married Gale Seim and bore two children, Larry of Southport, NC, and Pam of Steamboat Springs, CO.&nbsp; The tragic farm tractor death of Gale left Joan a widow at age 21.&nbsp; Fortunately for the young family, a great friend, Stan Kogler, came to their rescue and married Joan, raising her kids, and their own son, Duane of Vancouver, WA.With their children all graduating from college and pursuing their own careers, Stan and Joan continued living on the farm near Kipp, KS for over 60 years.&nbsp; During that time, along with farming, they ran a successful country electrical and plumbing business, with Stan providing the knowledge and labor, and Joan “doing the books.”&nbsp; Not engaging enough for Joan, she also worked as a legal secretary, drove the kids’ school bus, and of course, was an excellent homemaker and cook.&nbsp; Her cinnamon rolls and pies were used to bribe Stan to do work on “their” house and delight the kids’ college friends and hunting buddies!&nbsp;Joan also had a love for drawing and drafted the family’s country home.&nbsp; That led to an interest in artistic painting and she learned several types, but thoroughly enjoyed oil painting.&nbsp; Stan had given her painting lessons and even converted the home’s one car garage to a painting studio where she perfected her craft and even taught classes. Myrna Smith passed away Feb. 17th at the age of 99 years and 2 days. She was born Feb. 15th, 1923, in Miltonvale, Kansas to Ed and Blanche (Fosdick) Paronto.

At the age of five, the family moved to Wakeeney, Kansas and resided there until 1939 and then returned to Miltonvale, Kansas. Myrna graduated from Miltonvale Rural High school in 1942, then continued her education at Brown Mackie College. 

She was employed by Southwestern Bell Telephone as an operator until 1953. During this time of employment, Myrna was introduced to her husband, Charley Smith, a lineman also employed by SWB. Myrna also worked for a lumber company in Salina, as well as Wyatt Manufacturing and Great Plains Manufacturing. After retiring, she continued part time employment at these locations: Salina Regional Health Center formerly known as Asbury Hospital, YWCA and KACCRRA.

She enjoyed playing softball for company teams and bowling at state tournaments. One of her greatest hobbies was sewing, in which she sewed many of her own clothes as well as clothes for her son, wife and granddaughters, making several of the granddaughters' formal dresses. Myrna also loved to garden, making the best pickles around.

Myrna is survived by her only son, Michael, and his wife Rhonda of Salina; granddaughter Kerry Miles of Kansas City, granddaughter and caregiver Joey Smith of Salina; great-granddaughter Kylie Meyers of Smolan. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews and many friends that came to love her as as "Grams".

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother Frances (WWII), sisters Lorena, Leah, Beth, and their husbands.

There will be no funeral service and cremation was chosen at her request. 

A celebration of her life will be held 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, March 5, 2022, at the V.F.W.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in honor of Myrna Smith to be designated at a later date in care of Ryan Mortuary.

SALINA -&nbsp;Janet K. Williamson, 73, passed away on February 18, 2022 at her home in Salina, Kansas, after a long battle with cancer.

She was born October 29, 1948 in Topeka, Kansas to Charles R. and Lila M. Shepard. She grew up on the family farm in Carbondale, Kansas. She graduated from Carbondale High School in 1966 and attended Emporia State University.

In 1970, she married Tom A. Williamson and to this union two children were born, Scott and Laura. She worked for USD 305 for a number of years and before she retired, she was the athletic secretary at Salina South High School. 

She loved to sew and quilt and to take road trips with her sewing pals to fabric and sewing stores throughout Kansas. She enjoyed visiting the national parks and seeing the great outdoors.

She was preceded in death by her parents. 

She is survived by her husband Tom; son Scott Williamson of Overland Park, Kansas; daughter Laura (Joe) Hodgson of Topeka, Kansas; grandchildren, Cole and Kaci Hodgson; and sister Karen (Dennis) Long of Carbondale, Kansas.

Family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Friday, March 4, 2022 at Ryan Mortuary. It was Janet's wish to be cremated. A private family memorial service will be held at a later date.

Quentin Charles "Q" Kaiser, loving son, brother, uncle, nephew, cousin and friend, 34, of Salina, Kansas, passed away Wednesday, February 16th, 2022.

Quentin was born in Great Bend, Kansas on November 22, 1987, a son of Laura (Hopkins) Ploutz and the late Curtis L. Kaiser.

Raised in Claflin, Kansas, he was a sweet, caring, kind-hearted, intelligent, talented, beautiful soul who would give the last dollar he had to a homeless man. He was an artist, a musician, photographer and had many God-given gifts to do anything and go anywhere. He was brilliant and talented in so many ways. He was gifted with a beautiful smile and a personality that was bigger than life. He loved nature, the outdoors and his family. To know him was to love him and he never met a stranger. He was the rose among the thorns. Anyone who knew him and not his demons, were lucky to have been given that opportunity. He truly was a gift of God.

Survivors include his mother Laura Ploutz (Alan) of Ellsworth, Kansas; three brothers, Brandon Kaiser (Pam Beeck), of Salina, Kansas, Aaron Kaiser (Kendra), of Claflin, Kansas, Logan Larson, of Ellsworth, Kansas; two sisters, Ashley Schauf (Brian), of Hays, Kansas, Casey Webber (Catlin), of Wilson, Kansas; stepsister Danielle Dittman (Josh) of Ellsworth, Kansas; grandmother Pauline Kaiser of Salina, Kansas. Left to also cherish his memory are aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, especially Tristan, who will be forever bonded to the uncle who loved him beyond measure; cousins and many extended family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father Curtis Kaiser; grandparents Royce Kaiser, Floyd Hopkins and Victoria Weber.

John Carl Watson&nbsp;was born on October 6, 1948, in Long Beach, California to Charles Frederick Weiss and Katherine Mae Glover Weiss and passed away peacefully with tender loving care from Kindred Hospice on February 15, 2022. &nbsp;

He was preceded in death by his parents. 

John lived in Salina most of his life with his Salina family for over 40 years. 

John is survived by his Salina family, Nancy and Richard Main, Brad Weiss, Brenda Weiss Miller (Nyle) Michelle Weiss Hoesli, Mark Weiss (Kristi) and Greg Weiss (Denise) and his sisters and brother, Sandy Weiss Ogilve (Bruce) of Aiken, SC, Charles Frederick Watson of Seneca, SC, Sharon Weiss Kampsen (Jeff) of Milton, GA, Susanne Marie Watson of Vestavia Hills, AL, Teri Watson Marshall of Apex, NC and multiple nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. &nbsp;

John loved bowling, swimming, and being part of Salina Special Populations.&nbsp; He graduated from Salina High School South and worked for OCCK for many years as a cleaner and general laborer.

John was parish member of St. Mary’s Queen of the Universe Catholic Church in Salina and loved attending mass each week.

John will be remembered by many for always have a ready, sunny smile and a soul warming hug for those he knew and loved.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Saturday, February 26th at St. Mary Queen of the Universe Catholic Church at 11:00 a.m. with a burial service immediately following for family and close friends at All Saints Catholic Cemetery.&nbsp; &nbsp;

Survivors include his wife Patricia of the home; son, Scott Allen (Amy); daughters Tonya Allen and Jody Mai (James); four grandchildren, Keeli Mai, Jamie Mai, Justin Allen, and Cree Carmichael.

Patrick Flynn, 66, of Abilene passed away February 16, 2022 at Via Christi Hospital in Manhattan. He was born March 19, 1956 in Wichita, the son of Maurice Elvin Flynn and Willa May Haynes. He graduated from Abilene High School in 1974. 

After high school he worked for a service station in Abilene as a mechanic and also worked for Paul Llamas Construction. He later went on and worked for Union Pacific Railroad. He owned and operated Conland Concrete from 1990-2009. After retiring from his concrete business he stayed busy working for DD Ranch. 

Pat loved wrestling and coached many kids in the AKWC; he also coached various other sports as well. 

He married Sherri Kessler. They later divorced. He later married Cheri Everett. 

Patrick is survived by his sons Josh, Andrew, Caleb and Mason Flynn;&nbsp; grandchildren Haven, Brinlee, Kaylin and Kash and a grandson on the way, Jaymeson and ex-wife Cheri Everett Flynn. 

He was preceded in death by his brother Brian Flynn and mother Willa May. 

Pat’s wishes were to be cremated. Memorial Services will be 3:00 p.m., Friday, February 25, 2022 at Danner Funeral Home in Abilene. Inurnment will follow at the Abilene City Cemetery. Family will receive friends Thursday evening from 5-6 p.m.PM at Danner Funeral Home. 

The family suggests memorials be given to the Abilene Kids Wrestling Club (AKWC).

Melanie Jo Nuss, 64, of Herington passed away peacefully on February 16, 2022, at Menorah Medical Center in Overland Park, KS. She was born February 18, 1957, in Herington to Charles Herbel and Pauline McCollum.

Melanie lived her whole life in Herington, graduating from Herington High School with the class of 1975. 

On July 6, 1974, she married the love of her life, Craig Nuss, in Herington. To this union they were blessed with three children.&nbsp; Melanie was a railroader’s wife, taking care of the home and children. She loved spending time with her family and especially her grandkids.

Melanie is survived by her husband of 47 years Craig; sons Nathan Nuss, of Herington, Taylor Nuss, of Shawnee; daughter Tarah Jo Haffner of Herington; sisters Susan Wolf, of Whitehouse, TX, Patricia Cox, Abilene, Linda Stone, Ottawa, and Terry Bricker, of Escondido, CA; brothers Mike Herbel, Herington, and David Herbel, Marion. &nbsp;&nbsp;

She is preceded in death by her parents, infant son Joseph, brother Jimmy Herbel and father-in-law Robert Nuss.

Robert M. Koster died Friday, February 18, 2022 at the Hilltop Lodge in Beloit, Kansas at the age of 90. He was born August 30, 1931 to Henry and Susan (Thomas) Koster at Cawker City, Kansas. He graduated from St. Theresa’s in Cawker City.

Bob was inducted in the United States Army on May 23, 1951, and served with the 23rd&nbsp;Signal Construction Battalion in Korea. He was honorably discharged with the rank of Corporal at Camp Carson, Colorado on April 30, 1953. He was a lifetime member of Beloit VFW Post #6242, and past member of the Cawker City American Legion Post #379, and was very active in both organizations. He retired from Richardson Manufacturing.

Bob enjoyed riding his Harley, and parading his ’35 Chevy. He loved his family, especially being around his nieces and nephews. He was known as a generous, loving, and caring person that was always willing to help family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters Marcella Hyde and husband Warren, and Janice Koster; brothers Charles and wife Leona, Richard and wife Rosie, Harold, Jerome and wife Patricia, and Raymond; brother-in-law Clifford Quenzer; sisters-in-law Mary Koster and Martha Koster; nephews Patrick Koster, Jerry Koster, Steve Lingg, and Tim Holman.

Bob is survived by his sisters Dolores Quenzer and Marilyn Lingg and her husband Wayne; brothers Cecil, and Henry and his wife Phyllis; and many beloved nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, February 25 at the Sts. Peter &amp; Paul Catholic Church. Visitation will be at 9 a.m. followed by a rosary service at 10 a.m.Friday at the Church. 

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Church.

She was also preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Velma.

MSG Vigilio “Virgil” Garcia (U.S. Cav, RET) was born April 18, 1948, in San Antonio, TX to Vigilio Santos and Lupe Garcia.&nbsp; The oldest of three children he grew up in Torrance, CA and graduated from Narbonne High School in 1966.&nbsp; 

Virgil was a lifelong soldier. He joined the Air Force and became a crew chief, serving from 1968 to 1970. He then took a five-year separation from service to be a crew chief for NHRA racer “Big Daddy Don Garlits,” until joining the Army in 1975. His service took him from Vietnam, Japan, Korea, Germany, to all over the United States. He proudly served in the 3/7 and 3/8 Cavalry, 1st&nbsp;Armor Division, 250 Mechanized Infantry, Big Red 1.&nbsp; Virgil instructed Bradley Fighting Vehicles and retired in 1991 at Fort Riley, Kansas.&nbsp; He was proud to have served his country and always believed in the integrity of a handshake.&nbsp; God, Family and Country! 

Virgil married Lynn Elliott on January 8, 1982. They made their home in Wakefield in 1987. He served his community as a city councilman and he and his family owned and operated the Lakeview Restaurant.&nbsp; 

He loved the Chargers, Bomber Football, drawing, and anything to do with cars.&nbsp; Virgil’s greatest love was spending time with his loved ones and dancing in the kitchen with his wife and family.

Spencer Graeme Stucky, age 32, was born on a full moon Friday, October 13th, 1989, and is survived by his loving parents, Roger P. and Ruthanne Stucky of Moundridge, KS.&nbsp; 

He passed away due to a freak accident on February 18, 2022. 

Additional survivors include sister Alisa Stucky of Lawrence, KS, with nieces Zoe and Bridgette Stucky-Dorris; sister Dixie (Doug) Weilert of Leoti, KS, with nephews Phillip (Lizzie) Weilert and Trenton (Ellisa) Weilert; sister Susan Stephenson of McPherson, KS with niece Jenni Stephenson; cousin Roger Hernandez of Wichita, KS with Emily and Eli Hernandez; and aunts, uncles, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Kathy Stephenson; grandparents Marvel and Elbert Guyer; and grandma Kathleen Stucky.

Spencer graduated from Moundridge High School with the class of 2008, attended Salina Automotive Vo-Tech, and worked part-time at Moridge Manufacturing in the fabrication department.&nbsp; He always liked working with steel.

At an early age, he learned to handle equipment and enjoyed working on the farm with his dad.&nbsp; Currently, he was looking forward to a&nbsp; product demonstration position with the Grasshopper Company.

Spencer endured life’s challenges and medical setbacks, loved his family dearly, and was famous for his bear hugs.&nbsp; He loved skiing the Blacks with his sister Dixie and her family.&nbsp; The holidays were a great time with his nieces, sharing good dog and cat stories with each other. He was very proud to be Bridgette and Zoe’s uncle.

Spencer was very patriotic, loved his country, and had great political discussions with cousin Roger.&nbsp; Sister Susan, was a nurturer to Spencer.&nbsp; When Spencer was a small boy helping Susan pull weeds, he asked, “Who in the world plants weeds?”

He loved music, nature, beautiful Kansas sunsets, the outdoors, 4-wheeling on family ranch land, and was always willing to help anyone in need.

The funeral service will be held at 5:00 p.m., Friday, February 25, 2022, at the First Presbyterian Church, McPherson, KS.&nbsp; A time of fellowship will follow the service at the church. A private burial will be held in the Mound Township Cemetery, Moundridge, KS.

Barbara Jean Jenkins, 87, of McPherson, KS, peacefully passed away on Monday, February 14, 2022, surrounded by family at her home in McPherson.&nbsp; 

She was a retired registered nurse, working at Northview Manor and The Cedars, both in McPherson, and Sandstone Heights in Little River.

Barbara was born on August 20, 1934, near Galva, KS, the daughter of Nathan Franklin and Matilda (Becker) Giesel.&nbsp; She graduated from Galva High School and Halstead Hospital School of Nursing.&nbsp; 

On June 26, 1955, Barbara was united in marriage to John Clayton Jenkins in Tacoma, WA.&nbsp; He preceded her in death on August 10, 2020.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Little River, KS and was a member of United Methodist Women.

Survivors include three children, John Clayton Jenkins, Jr. of Maize, KS, Marcé Lorenzen of Raleigh, NC; and Jeff Jenkins and wife, Darla, of Las Cruces, NM; a sister, Bernice Lorenzen of McPherson, KS; four grandchildren, Nathan Jenkins, Stephen Jenkins (Madison), Tim Jenkins, and Sarah Jenkins; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family.&nbsp;

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and a brother, Chester Giesel.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, February 25, 2022, at First United Methodist Church, Little River, with Pastor Jeff Goetzinger officiating.&nbsp;

Roberta Marie Mohler Reed, 95, of McPherson, died at the Cedars on Feb. 15, 2022.

Roberta was born July 23, 1926, to Robert E. and Velma Landis Mohler in McPherson. She was an unexpected delight to her parents, who having lost two babies previously, adopted two children, Elizabeth and Richard. Robert and Velma did not expect another baby to live and were not prepared for her arrival, but because Roberta’s rh-negative blood matched her mother’s, she not only lived, she thrived.

Roberta had a happy childhood growing up on College Hill just blocks from McPherson College where her father taught. Despite the Depression, the community provided support and friendship. As a child she swam in the old round pool in Lakeside Park; she walked to Washington School, home for lunch and back for the afternoon; she marched in the All Schools Day parade; and she made lifelong friends most of whom she outlived.

A defining moment was the death of her mother when she was 10. Roberta seldom spoke of it but once said she remembered little of the next two years. She spent a summer or two with her beloved aunt in Michigan and was blessed to gain a new mother when Robert married Fern Shoemaker and then younger siblings Edwin and Genelle.

Roberta graduated from McPherson High School in 1944 and McPherson College in 1948 with a bachelor’s degree in sociology. 

But she often mentioned getting her MRS degree, marrying Marvin Krehbiel a week after graduation, June 5, 1948. She loved living on the farm where they raised their children Susan, Mary, John, and Tim. 

She was a loving mother who guided in gentle ways and led by example. She read endlessly to her children and showered them with her time. Later she showed the same love and support to her grandchildren. Family gatherings, vacations, and birthday parties were special. She bragged that all four of her children and all four of their spouses graduated from McPherson College—and they’re all still married!

After her divorce, she began a new phase of her life as owner/operator of McPherson Travel Center. She married Don Reed on Feb. 7, 1981, and shared much fun and many adventures with him until his death in 1999.

When asked her favorite trip, she always replied, “my last one.”She was a lifelong active member of the McPherson Church of the Brethren and a 50+ year member of Chapter EU of the PEO sisterhood. A social person, she enjoyed entertaining in her home and being with friends in book clubs, bridge clubs, and gatherings formal and informal. Throughout her seven-plus year struggle with dementia, she retained her positive outlook on life, her cheerful nature, her beautiful smile, and her inner strength. She died as peacefully as she lived. And yes, she was right. Her last trip is her best.
