Life Sketch Taken from the Funeral Bulletin

DeVerne Buchholz passed into eternity peacefully in his home on Saturday, March 19, 2022. He was born in Hays, KS to Jane and LaVerne Buchholz on August 17, 1949, and grew up in WaKeeney.

Visiting his grandparents' farm was the highlight of his life, where he developed his exceptional ability to watch, listen, and learn how the physical and mechanical things of the world worked.

He was the oldest of three children, having a sister, Jan, and little brother, Kirk.

The family relocated to Hillsboro KS when DeVerne was in 8th grade. As a senior in high school, he special ordered a 1967 royal plum SS/RS Camaro which he customized to his liking and enjoyed over many high-speed miles.

DeVerne served in the Navy during the Vietnam War, although he preferred not to talk about this portion of his life.

In his effort to fit into life, he was lured into a life of drugs and alcohol where he became addicted and struggled for many years. But by the grace of God and the loving support of others, a new life of sobriety began for him at the age of 38. He was very proud and thankful for the strength to live sober for 34 years.

He worked hard, raised his daughters, and was always learning new things.

Always one to lend an empathetic ear, he attended the University of Montana in Missoula where he studied social work.

He considered himself a jack-of-all-trades, working in maintenance, mechanics, truck driving, oil field work and his total renovation of the old railroad depot on 140th and Indigo.

Church was an important part of his life, seeking to know God and follow His ways, which he did best by going outside every morning and night to spend time in nature as the sky proclaimed God to him.

DeVerne is survived by his wife Sue; three daughters, Krystal Dahn Aucutt, Elisha Adel Buchholz, and Bryna Tralise Siemens (Brad) from a previous marriage to Dixie Mead; his sister Jan Frantz (Leonard); and eight grandchildren – Lance Aucutt, Nathan Aucutt, Ely Smith, Cole Chapman, Audrey Buchholz, Isac Speer, Hunter Siemens and Nevaeh Siemen.
