Morris "MOE" Eugene Mills passed away Saturday October 22, 2022 at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita, Kansas surrounded by his family. Morris was born in Russell, Kansas on February 12, 1952, the son of Mildred (McCord) Mills and Melvin Mills.

Morris graduated from Russell High School in 1970 and attended Salina Area Vocational Technical College for auto body repair.

Morris met the love of his life while in college and was united in marriage to Marsha Titus eight months later on July 31 st , 1971, and were able to share 51 loving years together.&nbsp;Morris and Marsha established their home in McPherson, Kansas.

He was a member of the Presbyterian Church, McPherson, where he served as an elder.

Morris worked as a carpenter building homes for Harold Schlender. He then worked at Turtle Top, where he painted fancy designs for van conversions. He later became ASE certified in mechanics. Morris brought his dream of business ownership to reality and SureStart Automotive was built at 2150 E. 1st Street in McPherson. He then transitioned to fabricating and designing airplane tanker trucks for Integrity Refuelers. With the devastation of 9/11 the, airplane industry slowed, and Morris found himself at age 50 starting over. Morris knew that he wanted to continue to serve his community and support his family. It was then decided he would reopen his mechanics shop with a revamped name of Moe’s Muffler and Brake. He was given the opportunity to sell his business and spend his days on the golf course where he served as golf course superintendent at Rolling Acres Golf Club until 2021 when he officially retired.

Morris and Marsha owned several homes throughout the years, in 1997 they built their dream home right next to Rolling Acres where he could&nbsp; ride his golf cart across the yard to enjoy his retirement days with Marsha and Callie, their beloved dog.

Moe enjoyed bowling, restoring antique vehicles, woodworking projects and golf, spending every free moment he had on the golf course, but most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family.

Morris and Marsha had three beautiful daughters Teresa Bonham (Tim) of&nbsp;Louisburg, Kansas, Tamara Wilson (Shawn) of Lyons, Kansas, Tonya Mills (Derric Thompson), of Salina, Kansas; grandchildren Kylee Webb, Jacob Bonham, Gabriel Bonham, Kynlee Bonham, Stripes Wilson, Shane Wilson, Skylar Mills, Stasia Bard, Shado Bard, Shaedyn Maley, Shawntay Crawford, and Mariah Daniels; and six great-grandchildren.

Morris was preceded in death by his parents and brother Marvin Mills.

She preceded him in death on November 8, 2017. Elwood was lifelong farmer and stockman, retiring in 2014. He is survived by his daughters, Sharon (Donald) Unruh of Galva, Linda (Steven) Unruh of Knippa, TX, and Sondra (Phillip) Giesbrecht of Macon, MS; son Lavern (Cindy) Koehn of Canton; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and sister Elfrieda Becker of Moundridge. She was a 1967 graduate of Marquette High School.

On June 10, 1967, Dianne was united in marriage to Bradley Lowell Surface in Garnett. He preceded her in death in 2006.

On July 5, 2008, Dianne was united in marriage to James Wesley Deckard. He survives.

Dianne loved quiltmaking, sewing, spending time with family and her two loving dogs.

Other survivors include her two sons, Michael Surface and wife, Wendy (Swisher), of Topeka, KS and Greg Surface and wife, Victoria (Goss), of Marquette, KS; two stepsons, Jeremy Deckard and wife, Amy (Hammerschmidt), of Topeka, KS and Chad Deckard and wife, Tere (Bertrand), of Assaria, KS; 13 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; one nephew, Brandon Watkins; and one sister, Linda Bowen.

She was preceded in death by her parents, an infant son, a brother, Jim Watkins, and a nephew, Jeremy Watkins.

 Patricia married Loyd K. Patterson on March 14, 1969.&nbsp; She farmed in Clay County with her husband and worked at the Clay County Treasurer’s office for 20 years.

Patricia was a member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Clay Center.&nbsp; &nbsp;She is preceded in death by parents.

Roberta “Ruth” Clark was born on April 26, 1939, in Delavan, KS. She is the daughter of Harry and Francis (Filkin) Yakle.

 She graduated from Wilsey High School in 1956 and went on to study at Emporia State University. 

She was united in marriage to Robert Clark on June 01, 2002, in Herington, KS.

Ruth worked as a proofreader for the Herington Newspaper. She was also a paraprofessional in the Hope School District. Ruth was a very active and strong member in her church and was on the board of the Herington Senior Center for 20 years. In her free time, Ruth loved to cross stitch, and would custom make birthday cards for all her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Ruth, at the age of 83, passed away on October 22, 2022, at her home surrounded by her loving family. 

She is preceded in death by daughter Angela Prince, parents Harry and Francis Yakle and sister Harriet Roselle Calihan. 

Her family will gather to greet friends on Tuesday, October 25, 2022, at 12:00 noon, with funeral service to follow beginning at 1:00 p.m. all at First Christian Church, Herington, KS. Services will be led by Pastor Jordan Stevens. Ruth will be laid to rest in Delavan Cemetery.

She is the daughter of Harry and Francis (Filkin) Yakle. She graduated from Wilsey High School in 1956 and went on to study at Emporia State University. She was united in marriage to Robert Clark on June 01, 2002, in Herington, KS.Ruth worked as a proofreader for the Herington Newspaper. She was also a paraprofessional in the Hope School District. Ruth was a very active and strong member in her church and was on the board of the Herington Senior Center for 20 years. Billy Dean Allred, age 73, of Concordia, Kansas, went to be with His Lord and Savior on Friday, October 21, 2022 at Cloud County Health Center in Concordia, Kansas.&nbsp;&nbsp;He was born on February 5, 1949 in Dallas, Texas to Jesse &amp; Lou (Jenkins) Allred.

Billy grew up in the Dallas, Texas community and attended Seagoville High School.

Billy served in the United States Army from July 26, 1966 ~ July 24, 1972 during the Vietnam War.&nbsp; He enlisted in the Army Reserves upon returning home to the states.&nbsp; Billy was honorably discharged as a PFC E-5.

He married Patricia Anderson in Mesquite, Texas.&nbsp; They were united in marriage for 30 wonderful years.

He was a member of the Victory Baptist Church in Scurry, TX.

He was an over-the-road freight relocation engineer driver for 40 years until he retired in January of 2010.

Billy enjoyed his retirement where he gained the hobby of woodworking.&nbsp; He loved making and personalizing canes, birdhouses, and tables.&nbsp; He also was a avid clock collector.&nbsp; Through life Billy enjoyed pranking his family and having fun joking around for everyone’s amusement.

He is survived by his wife Patricia Allred, Concordia, KS; brother Vernon Allred and (Sharon), Mesquite, TX; mother-in-law Janette Thorpe, Glasco, KS; sister-in-law Michell Thompson and (Chris), Ft. Worth, TX; daughter Camri Tidwell, Ft. Worth, TX; his three grandchildren, Isaiah, Genesiz, and Isaac; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents Jesse and Lou, sister Shirley Vaden, and brother Kenneth Allred.

It was Billy’s wishes to be cremated and the family will have a Celebration of Life service at the Victory Baptist Church in Scurry, Texas at a later time to be announced.

Carl West, age 58, died Wednesday, Oct. 19, 2022 at the KU Medical Center, Kansas City, Kansas.&nbsp; He was born on August 10, 1964 in Salina, Kansas to Raymond C. and Sally K. (Jackson) West.

In his youth Carl attended school in Salina, Kansas and after moving to Clay Center he attended Clay Center Schools.

Carl was a cook in the cafeteria for Mount Joseph Senior Village for 20 years, serving great food for the residents.&nbsp; Carl also worked as a cook for Bobbie and Dots and the Thunderbird Motor Inn, both of Concordia, for many years.&nbsp;

He enjoyed fishing and the outdoors.&nbsp; Most of all Carl enjoyed spending time with his family and friends and will be missed by many.

Carl is survived three sisters, Annie Desmarais (Dave), Clay Center, KS; Marie White (Jim), Concordia, KS; Christine Hartley (Don), Clay Center, KS; three brothers, Robert Jordan (Patty), Kokomo, IN; Jeff West (Leslie), Indianapolis, IN; Mike West of Concordia, KS; the staff and residents at Mt. Joseph Senior Village, best friend Vonda Clemons, Concordia, KS; many nieces and nephews.

Gordon Dean Ryff, 87, passed away peacefully at Stormont Vail Hospital Topeka, Kansas on Wednesday, October 19, 2022, surrounded by his family. 

Gordon was born on September 24, 1935 in Elmo, Kansas on the family farm. He was the fourth and youngest son of Henry and Erma Ryff. 

He attended a country school near Elmo during his elementary years and graduated from Hope High School in 1953. Gordon married Juanita Beem on December 29, 1956, at the Navarre Church of the Brethren. They were married just shy of 66 years.

He is preceded in death by his parents and his three older brothers,&nbsp; Kenneth, Marvin, and George. 

He is survived by his wife, Juanita, of the home; three children, Tony (Kathy) of Wichita, Barb of Abilene, and Mike of Hope (Sheila Mae, fiancé of Carcar City, Philippines); five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and many nephews and nieces. Gordon and his family lived and farmed in the Elmo area.

He attended Ebenezer Baptist Church from his youth and was baptized there. As a boy, he was enrolled in Bible Memory Association and memorized hundreds of verses. The training that his mother invested in him served as a foundation for the rest of his life. 

In addition to farming, he enjoyed serving and helping others. He worked at the Navarre Farm Service Co-op for many years. He loved his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was always willing to lend a helping hand to neighbors and friends, and he enjoyed woodworking. Gordon was also active in the Navarre Lions Club. There will be no visitation. Services will be held on Saturday, October 29, 2022, at 10:30 a.m. at the Ebenezer Baptist Church near Dillon. Burial will follow at the church’s cemetery on the grounds. Mary Elizabeth Ryan (Schneider), 100, of Solomon, passed away Saturday, October 22, 2022 in Salina,&nbsp;KS.&nbsp;She was born September 12, 1922 on a farm west of Salina, to John J. and Lucy Grace (Seramur) Schneider.

She graduated from Sacred Heart High School and received her teaching degree from&nbsp;Marymount College. She taught in Grainfield, Kansas, and then Salina Sacred Heart prior to getting&nbsp;married and starting her family. 

She married Francis Ryan on December 29, 1954 in Salina, KS and they had 36 years together until his death in 1990.

Mary was active in her church where she taught religion, served on the Solomon Altar Society, lectured&nbsp;and led the rosary. She served on the Solomon USD #393 Board of Education, as well as the Solomon State Bank Board. She played cards for the 51 Club, Sunflower Shufflers and Y&amp;O Club, as well served as&nbsp;a 4-H food leader for many years.

She was a devoted wife, mother to seven, grandmother to 21 and great-grandma to seven.

The month prior the family was able to celebrate her 100 th birthday which&nbsp;she truly enjoyed.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Francis, five siblings, Frances Schneider, John Schneider,&nbsp;Sister Monica Schneider, Lucy McCann and Sister Lucy Schneider. 

She is survived by her children, Joe&nbsp;Ryan (Kym), Margaret Shaver (Rick), Pat Ryan (Marcia), Lucy Alexander (John), Jim Ryan (Lisa), Jane Oeser (Jon), and Tom Ryan, and her grandchildren Ben, Nick and Meaghan Ryan, Jessica Ward, Lauren,&nbsp;Drew and Seth Shaver, Elizabeth, Luke and Kyle Ryan, David, Ryan and Lucy Alexander, Michael, Janae, Devin, Emily and Peyton Ryan, Lawson, Lexi and Lauren Oeser and seven great-grandchildren, M.J. Ward,&nbsp;Jayce and Levi Alexander, Logan, Kray and Landyn Kirmer, and Elena Ryan.

Visitation will be Monday, October 24, 2022 from 6:00-7:00 p.m. at the Immaculate Conception Parish in&nbsp;Solomon, with the rosary beginning at 7:00 p.m.. Services will be Tuesday, October 25, 2022, at 10:00 a.m.at the Immaculate Conception Parish in Solomon. Burial will follow at the Mt. Calvary Cemetery in&nbsp;Solomon. Marlene was born in Salina, KS on October 14, 1938 to Carl and Emma Shuberg.&nbsp; 

She graduated from Salina Central High School in 1956, where she met the love of her life and husband of 63 years, Jerome.&nbsp;&nbsp;

 Marlene completed course work in stenography at Brown Mackie College and worked for Great Plains Insurance before going into the future family business, Town and Country TV, with Jerome.&nbsp; 

Marlene and Jerome were married in First Methodist Church in Salina in 1959, and recently celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary on October 11.&nbsp; 

Marlene became a huge sports fan cheering her children and grandchildren all through the age groups, from “little league” to college athletics.&nbsp; She was a loyal Chiefs and Royals fan, even when that wasn't popular.

Marlene was famous for her baking, which she enjoyed doing frequently with her mother.&nbsp; The Christmas season was always upon us when Marlene would bake a wide variety of delicious cookies, candies, and treats for all of her children, grandchildren, and friends.&nbsp; Marlene also had a magical twinkle in her eye and would always seem to find and encouraging word of support even in some of the most painful times.&nbsp; Her laugh was infectious and frequent.&nbsp; She was always a great card player, usually winning all the time at her pinochle nights.&nbsp; However, in the past several years, she really honed those skills and reached “card shark” status playing various games with her children, grandchildren, or any unsuspecting card player willing to take her on.

Left in mourning her passing is her husband, Jerome, of the home, son Dr. Kyle Gunnerson of Saline, MI, daughter Nikole Zegunis (Gunnerson) and her husband Michael of Lenexa, KS, brother Ronald Shuberg of Topeka and his wife Marge, cousin Alan Weiser and his wife Marilyn of Arvada, CO, nephew Eric Shuberg, Topeka. Grandchildren are Zack Zegunis and his wife Riley, Seth Zegunis, and Luke Zegunis of Kansas City metro area and Brigid Gunnerson, Keira Gunnerson, Thomas Gunnerson, and Maeve Gunnerson of Saline, MI.

Barbara Jean Wood, 72 of Salina, passed away Monday, October 17, 2022. She was born July 8, 1950, in Ransom, Kansas

She worked as a trust clerk / teller for UMB Bank here in Salina for 30 years.

She was preceded in death by her parents Ivan E and Dorothy A. S. (Roths) Stetler, and her husband Earl Wood.

Survivors include her three sons, Jeff &nbsp;Wood of Salina, Jeremy (Heather) Wood of Bennington, and Jason (Patty) Wood of Salina, her sister Jan (Don) Leiker of Strasburg, Colorado, six grandchildren, four nephews and one niece.

Cremation has been chosen and a memorial service will be planned for a later date.

Nancy Kay (McGavran) Robbins went to be with our Heavenly Father on October 19, 2022, at the age of 84.

Nancy was born April 15, 1938, in Abilene, KS to Carl and Rovena (Windhorst) McGavran. 

Nancy graduated in 1956 from Minneapolis High School. 

She married Eugene E Robbins July 15, 1956, at the Methodist Church in Wells, KS.&nbsp;Nancy and Eugene (Gene) were married for 34 years before he preceded her in death April 12, 1990.

During their marriage, Gene and Nancy welcomed five daughters. Nancy was a loving mother, wife, and homemaker. For each daughter, she was roommother, Girl Scout Troop Leader, “beautician" and seamstress.

Nancy worked at numerous places in the community, including Boogaart’s, Perry’s Liquor, E lDorado and the bowling alley. Nancy is fondly remembered for her many years at the bowling alley. She was an avid bowler and Gene built her a special cabinet for her many trophies. In 1991, Dean Johnson offered her a job at the City Pharmacy. Nancy loved this job and most of all, her pharmacy family. She worked at the pharmacy for 29 years before retiring in 2020.

Nancy enjoyed sports; she attended many Minneapolis High School football and basketball games. You always knew where to find her when the Royals, Chiefs, or KU Jayhawks were on TV.

She is survived by her five daughters Sharon Hatfield of Lincoln, KS; Karen Arias and husband Jairo of Hays, KS; Janet Robbins of Wamego, KS; Jill Robbins and partner Hans Cathers of Hays, KS; Jeannie Robbins of Minneapolis, KS; 12 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren; brothers Fred, Ray, and Tom McGavran. She is also survived by her best friend of 60 years, Di Fraser. At one of her family reunions, Nancy looked at her large family and exclaimed “I started all this!”&nbsp;

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Eugene; sister Deanna Cross; son-in-law Curt Roach; father and mother- in-law, Frank and Wilma Robbins; brother-in-law Dean Robbins; and sister-in-law Dolly Mae Andrla.

Visitation will be Sunday, October 23 from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Wilson Family Funeral Home 405 Argyle Ave., Minneapolis, KS, where the family will receive friends from 4:00 to 6:00. Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m., Monday, October 24 at the First United Methodist Church 418 N. Rock St., Minneapolis, and burial will follow in the Highland Cemetery Minneapolis.

Rachel Lee Johnson, 80, of McPherson, Kansas, passed away at 12:16 p.m., Tuesday, October 18th, 2022 at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita, Kansas. Rachel was born in McPherson, Kansas on November 16, 1941, a daughter of Bessie Arlene (Anderson) and Thomas Samuel Miller. Through the years Rachel was a homemaker, farmer's wife and had a daycare business out of her home, worked for A&amp;W as a carhop where she met her husband Verle, was a nurse's aide at McPherson Hospital, then worked at the McPherson County Courthouse as a payroll clerk for 33 years until she retired. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in McPherson. Rachel was known for her servant heart for others and her favorite place to be was anywhere surrounded by her friends and family. She always had great stories to share and was always up for a game of cards or dominoes. She enjoyed watching all sports and could be found in the kitchen baking her famous pies and cakes. If she wasn’t covered in flour baking in the kitchen, she was knee deep in thread sewing quilts. She loved seeing things grow in her garden and canning what she grew. No matter if she was canning or baking, she loved sharing what she made with others. Wherever Rachel was, Bella was right by her side and was her four-legged companion for 10 years. Rachel Lee Miller was united in marriage to Verle I. Johnson on Aug. 2, 1959 in Roxbury, Kansas. The young couple established their first home together in McPherson. This union was blessed with the birth of two children, a son and a daughter, Verle Kevin Johnson and Kristie Lee Johnson.

Verle and Rachel made many memories during their 56 years of marriage, 45 of those years on the farm raising cattle, chickens, donkeys and much more. Two of their favorite activities to do together on the farm were deer hunting and wheat harvest. While Verle was spending hours on the combine cutting wheat, Rachel would be in the kitchen preparing meals to take to the field. She is survived by her children, Kevin Johnson and his wife Rhonda of Dayton, Ohio and Kristie Torgerson and her husband Brennan of Hutchinson, Kansas; her brother Ken Miller of Salina, Kansas. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Amelia(Chris) Fisher, Angela (Kaleb) Sortman, Trevor (Helen) Torgerson and Taryn Torgerson, one great-grandchild, Ella Grace Torgerson, with two on the way. Rachel was preceded in death by her parents; her sisters Shirley Unruh and Opal Specker and her two brothers, Robert Tom Miller and Richard K. Miller. Bill Dean Williams, 76, of McPherson, KS and formerly of Downs, KS, passed away peacefully on Monday, October 17, 2022, at Overland Park Regional Medical Center (Overland Park, KS).&nbsp; 

He worked as a welder at Kent Manufacturing in Tipton, KS prior to farming.&nbsp;

Bill was born on December 3, 1945, in Beloit, KS, the son of Dean Harrison and Ida Ann (Leonhart) Williams.&nbsp; 

He graduated from Downs High School in 1962.&nbsp;

 On October 15, 1967, Bill was united in marriage to Carol L. VanWey in Smith Center, KS.&nbsp; Three children were born to this union, Candee, Dana, and Kyle.

In Bill’s younger years, he enjoyed fishing and hunting. He was an avid KC Chiefs, KC Royals, and KU Jayhawks fan.&nbsp; Bill’s personality was very easy going, and he thoroughly enjoyed giving everyone a hard time.

He is survived by three children, Candee Nightingale (Larry), Dana Dossett (Monte), and Kyle Williams (Jennifer), all of McPherson, KS; 12 grandchildren, Nicole, Kelsey, Mayce, Rachel, Hannah, Noah, Alexandra, Tate, Hope, Clara, Surie, and Calypso; eight great-grandchildren; a sister, Deanna White of McPherson, KS; former wife Carol Madron of McPherson, KS; and many extended family and friends.

A graveside service will be held in Downs Cemetery (Downs, KS) at a later date.

Gary N. Connellis, 81, lived a full life on his terms and departed from this life on his terms. He was a proud Brooklyn boy born on February 25, 1941, to Harry and Caroline Connellis. 

He dedicated his life to protect, serve, and connect with every type of person from all walks of life.

 A U.S. Army veteran, he protected our country by repairing and maintaining military helicopters. Upon leaving the military, his goal was to become a fire fighter. Instead, his path led to proudly protecting and serving as a New York City police officer. His integrity and ability to connect with those he was protecting, while building trust, with those he was arresting made way for advancement to becoming a respected detective. A job-related injury retired his 20+ years of fighting crime.

 Greyhound racing, what began as a hobby, transformed into a business venture. Gary left the big apple in 1988 and found Clay Center- the land of Oz- as his new home. GNC Spartan Kennel was where his dream of raising, breeding, training, and racing this royal dog breed was realized. With blue blood running deep in his veins, Gary was led back to public service as a part time Clay County Court Service Officer.

Gary’s gifts were many. He championed the underdog, provided second chances to those who just needed a hand up, and advocated for systemic change for Clay County’s vulnerable. As the greyhound business was being overshadowed by slot machines and casinos, Gary retired his 20+ year dream and hung up his leash from the greyhound business. After years of connecting, listening, and encouraging his clients, he stepped aside from his court service officer role. 

His focus then shifted to managing his own medical diagnoses such as diabetes, A-Fib, weak heart muscles, and recovering from a heart attack all while keeping connected to his community through volunteer service. 

This humble, yet determined, Greek/Italian man did not allow anything to dim the mischievous twinkle in his eyes. He passed on this twinkle to one adult daughter and three adult sons from his first marriage. Filling the role of stepdad to his second wife’s two adult daughters, he was pleasantly surprised by the twinkle in the eyes of his youngest adult stepdaughter who proposed an adult adoption. Proudly displayed on his home office wall is the 2015 legally recognized adult adoption certificate of his then 38-year-old daughter.

In 2021, Gary was tasked with the hardest case of his life. The perpetrator was identified as chronic kidney failure with an accomplice named diabetes. Hitting the highway three days a week to Marysville for dialysis treatments was his new routine. The last year was a battle hard fought with his troops by his side including the Clay Center Public Transportation program, his family, and many friendships he cultivated in Kansas. 

He made it clear that his wish was to die in the home he worked hard to create, sleeping, and surrounded by his wife, his son Peter, and daughters Caroline and Julia. On October 6, 2022, his wish was granted as he heard Caroline’s voice that morning, heard Peter’s voice that afternoon, and had the love of his wife and Julia surrounding him as he napped in his recliner where he took his last breath. He lived a full life on his terms and left this life on his terms!

Gary was preceded in death by his younger brother, Peter H. Connellis; father Harry Connellis; and mother Caroline Connellis.

 Gary’s legacy will continue through his surviving spouse Miriam (Mimi) Fonseca of Clay Center, KS, and four biological adult children: daughter Caroline M. (Connellis) Morris and son-in-law Jim, Milford, PA (3 granddaughters and one grandson); son Gary V. Connellis, Nyack, NY (1 granddaughter); son Peter Connellis, Milford, PA (1 granddaughter); son Matthew J. Connellis, Milford, PA (2 grandsons and 1 granddaughter); stepdaughter Michelle (Vargas) Rivera and son-in-law Alex, Bangor, PA (2 granddaughters and 1 grandson); and adopted daughter Julia C.F. Connellis (1 fur granddaughter-dog and 1 fur granddaughter-cat), Topeka.

Connellis, 81, lived a full life on his terms and departed from this life on his terms. He was a proud Brooklyn boy born on February 25, 1941, to Harry and Caroline Connellis. He dedicated his life to protect, serve, and connect with every type of person from all walks of life. A U.S. Army veteran, he protected our country by repairing and maintaining military helicopters. Upon leaving the military, his goal was to become a fire fighter. Instead, his path led to proudly protecting and serving as a New York City police officer. His integrity and ability to connect with those he was protecting, while building trust, with those he was arresting made way for advancement to becoming a respected detective. A job-related injury retired his 20+ years of fighting crime. Greyhound racing, what began as a hobby, transformed into a business venture. Gary left the big apple in 1988 and found Clay Center- the land of Oz- as his new home. GNC Spartan Kennel was where his dream of raising, breeding, training, and racing this royal dog breed was realized. With blue blood running deep in his veins, Gary was led back to public service as a part time Clay County Court Service Officer.Gary’s gifts were many. He championed the underdog, provided second chances to those who just needed a hand up, and advocated for systemic change for Clay County’s vulnerable. As the greyhound business was being overshadowed by slot machines and casinos, Gary retired his 20+ year dream and hung up his leash from the greyhound business. After years of connecting, listening, and encouraging his clients, he stepped aside from his court service officer role. His focus then shifted to managing his own medical diagnoses such as diabetes, A-Fib, weak heart muscles, and recovering from a heart attack all while keeping connected to his community through volunteer service. This humble, yet determined, Greek/Italian man did not allow anything to dim the mischievous twinkle in his eyes. He passed on this twinkle to one adult daughter and three adult sons from his first marriage. Filling the role of stepdad to his second wife’s two adult daughters, he was pleasantly surprised by the twinkle in the eyes of his youngest adult stepdaughter who proposed an adult adoption. Proudly displayed on his home office wall is the 2015 legally recognized adult adoption certificate of his then 38-year-old daughter.In 2021, Gary was tasked with the hardest case of his life. The perpetrator was identified as chronic kidney failure with an accomplice named diabetes. Hitting the highway three days a week to Marysville for dialysis treatments was his new routine. The last year was a battle hard fought with his troops by his side including the Clay Center Public Transportation program, his family, and many friendships he cultivated in Kansas. He made it clear that his wish was to die in the home he worked hard to create, sleeping, and surrounded by his wife, his son Peter, and daughters Caroline and Julia. On October 6, 2022, his wish was granted as he heard Caroline’s voice that morning, heard Peter’s voice that afternoon, and had the love of his wife and Julia surrounding him as he napped in his recliner where he took his last breath. He lived a full life on his terms and left this life on his terms!Gary was preceded in death by his younger brother, Peter H. Connellis; father Harry Connellis; and mother Caroline Connellis. Gary’s legacy will continue through his surviving spouse Miriam (Mimi) Fonseca of Clay Center, KS, and four biological adult children: daughter Caroline M. (Connellis) Morris and son-in-law Jim, Milford, PA (3 granddaughters and one grandson); son Gary V. Connellis, Nyack, NY (1 granddaughter); son Peter Connellis, Milford, PA (1 granddaughter); son Matthew J. Connellis, Milford, PA (2 grandsons and 1 granddaughter); stepdaughter Michelle (Vargas) Rivera and son-in-law Alex, Bangor, PA (2 granddaughters and 1 grandson); and adopted daughter Julia C.F. Harlin Jay Timmons, Sr., 64 of Solomon, passed away Wednesday, October 19, 2022. He was born February 9, 1958 in Salina, the son of Warren James and Marva Lea (Rice) Timmons. 

On May 18, 1990 he was united in marriage to Rosemarie “Rose” Gabel in Salina. She preceded him in death July 23, 2009.

Jay worked as a grounds keeper for the Salina Country Club for over twenty years, retiring in 2017. Jay is survived by his daughters Melissa Timmons and Amber Keil and two sons, Jay Timmons JR and Walker Timmons; grandchildren Brittney, Damion, Autumn, Tyler and Bennett; and great-granddaughter Adalynn; two sisters, Peggy Hawk and KLynn Green; and one brother, Marvin Timmons. He was preceded in death by his parents, loving wife, Rose and two brothers, Dennis and Pete. Graveside services for Jay will be 1:00 p.m., Saturday, October 22, 2022 at Mt. St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery with Father Peter O’Donnell officiating. Family will receive friends Friday evening from 5-7 p.m., at Martin-Becker-Carlson Funeral Home in Abilene. Family suggests memorials be given to the Hospice of Dickinson County or to Village Manor Nursing Home.
