Vanessa J. Leite, PhD., passed away on April 7, 2023, after a short, yet courageous, battle with cancer. She was surrounded by her loved ones throughout her battle and at her passing. Her strength and grace during her cancer fight was profound and she never once complained or felt sorry for herself.

Vanessa was born on May 16, 1978, to Armin and Elizabeth (Unruh) Klassen in Filadelfia, Paraguay. During her early years, you could always find her playing outside in the dirt with the dogs, playing with her friends, visiting at her grandparents’ house, getting treats from Oma, fixing something with Opa, or swimming in their pool (once we got all the frogs out of course). She had a wonderful childhood in Paraguay.

In 1983, Vanessa, her mom, and her sisters, Tanya and Olivia, moved to Newton, KS. After living there a short time, her mom met and married Alcione (Al) Leite in 1984. This union brought Vanessa a brother and a favorite playmate, Dustin Leite. &nbsp;In 1986, Al adopted all three of the girls, and we all became the Leite Family.

Throughout her life, Vanessa would make fast friends with anyone. Her sense of humor and shenanigans always made her someone that people gravitated towards. Her laugh was one of the BEST laughs ever and if you could get her laughing, it made you feel like you were on top of the world. The loss of her is felt deeply by hundreds of people, all who felt an intense connection to her.

Vanessa loved to play sports, especially soccer, and was always stronger and faster than most of the boys. In fact, there were times, as a child, that people thought she was a boy because of how she dressed and behaved. Some of her favorite things to do were to ride her banana seat bike around town, play kick the can, climb trees, beat her siblings in Super Mario, make forts, and go mess around down by Sand Creek and hope that we didn’t fall in. She also enjoyed watching scary movies while one of her sisters sat on the stairs as a lookout for her parents, so she could warn her if she needed to turn off the movie quickly. One year for Christmas, our brother put her present in a Barbie box, and Vanessa opened it and started crying. She DID NOT want a Barbie! Once she opened the box, she was relieved to see that it was actually an action figure.

Vanessa attended Newton Public School and graduated in 1996. After graduation, she attended Cowley County Community College for one year before transferring to Bethel College. She graduated from Bethel College in 2001 with a bachelor of arts in biology and German, which had been her first language in Paraguay. While at Bethel, she studied abroad in Germany and Costa Rica and played forward on the women’s soccer team. She is still one of the top three goal scorers there with 103 goals scored.

Bethel is also where she met the love of her life, Matthew Westerman, and the group of women that she would call her best friends for 24+ years. She had an intense bond with these women, and they had many adventures and trips over the years. Most memorable were their float trips on the Elk River where she always made sure to give her “Vanessa glare” at the men trying to vye for their attention. She made sure to spend a couple of days with them when she would come home for the holidays.

After graduation from Bethel, Vanessa did voluntary service at the Richard M. Cohen AIDS hospice in San Francisco, CA, where she helped homeless men who were dying from AIDS. This experience really opened her heart to those in need, and she gave of her time and talents throughout her life. After working at the hospice, she moved back to Newton and worked at Prairie View Mental Health Hospital for several years.

In 2005, Vanessa moved to Kansas City where she became a certified personal trainer. During that time, she specialized in training women and helping them feel more confident inside and out. She also began competing in figure competitions and won several trophies. She spent many weekends traveling back to Newton or McPherson to love on and spoil her six nephews. Being Auntie Nessa was one of her titles that she was most proud of.

In 2011, Vanessa moved to Fresno, CA to attend Alliant University to study Forensic Psychology. She earned her doctorate in Forensic Psychology in 2016. She began her career with Coalinga State Hospital as an intern in 2015 and over the next eight years, she would work her way up to senior psychologist specialist in the Assessment Center.

In May 2018, she opened K &amp; L Clinical Forensic Practice with her best friend and business partner, Tamar Kenworthy, PsyD., who had been her professor at Alliant University. In her practice, Vanessa was a mentor to doctoral students, and she was highly respected, both personally and professionally, by the various individuals that she worked with. She worked with local courts and attorneys conducting forensic evaluations and assessments of clients. She was extremely goal-oriented and always looked for ways to expand their practice.

In Fresno, Vanessa enjoyed hiking, watching movies and the Golden Girls, hanging out with friends at the local wineries, taking trips to the beach, and working out. She worked out at Title 29 Fitness where it was known that the men working out would peek over and see what she was lifting so that they could add just a little more weight to their bar!! Vanessa really enjoyed eating and was known to eat several plates of food and then ask if she could eat everyone else’s leftovers. Her favorite food was anything that her mom, Betty, would cook, especially Brazilian food. She loved spending time with her precious rescue dogs, Moose, Bear, and Zero, and with her best friend, Tamar and her sons, Logan and Cole. Vanessa was a second mother to those boys and had a special bond with them.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Robert G. and Myrtle Unruh, fiancé, Matthew Westerman, a nephew, Gabriel Fetsch, and biological father, Armin Klassen.

She is survived by her parents, Alcione (Al) and Elizabeth (Betty) Leite, her sisters, Tanya Leite, Olivia Fetsch (Clay), Sophia Klassen (Bruno González), and Pia Klassen, and brother, Dustin Leite, as well as her stepmother, Bodil Klassen, brother-in-law, Jeremy Chalfant, and her nephews, Ayden, Sylas, Corbyn, and Zeke Chalfant; Owen and Dylan Fetsch; Bruno Gabriel González and nieces, Isabella Maldonado and Viktoria González. She is also survived by a host of family members and friends in Brazil, Paraguay, Germany and Austria as well as in the U.S.

Vanessa’s wishes were to have her ashes spread at her grandfather’s experimental farm in The Chaco, Paraguay. Her family and friends will travel there in 2024.

A Celebration of Life is planned for May 28, 2023, from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the CRU Winery in Madera, CA. A second Celebration of Life will be on June 4, 2023, at Grace Hill Winery in Whitewater, KS.

Thomas A. “Tom” Frederking, of Plainville, KS, passed away on April 12, 2023, at the Rooks County Health Center in Plainville. He was born on May 8, 1960, in Ellsworth, KS to Theodore C. and Saundra (McGee) Frederking. He married Lori J. Panzer on October 17, 1981, in Hays, KS. They were blessed with four children: Shawn, Brandon, Katelyn, and Logan.

Tom grew up in&nbsp;Sylvan Grove, KS&nbsp;and graduated from&nbsp;Sylvan&nbsp;Unified&nbsp;High School&nbsp;in 1978. He then went on&nbsp;to Barton County Community&nbsp;College&nbsp;for a year.&nbsp;Tom was an oilfield sales manager for Crawford Supply for&nbsp;the past&nbsp;7&nbsp;years, and before that he worked many years for Harbison-Fischer.&nbsp;

He was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church and&nbsp;4th&nbsp;Degree Member of the&nbsp;Knights of Columbus Council 1857.

Tom&nbsp;never met a stranger. To him, everyone was just a friend he hadn’t yet met. He&nbsp;was an avid KU Basketball fan. He enjoyed youth sports through coaching&nbsp;and refereeing, starting when he was 21 years old&nbsp;in&nbsp;1981&nbsp;until 2019. He was head&nbsp;boys’&nbsp;basketball coach for Plainville Cardinals from 2004 through 2008.&nbsp;He also&nbsp;enjoyed playing cards at Ruder Oil&nbsp;and never hesitated to take money from all the guys!&nbsp;He loved spending time with his family, especially his three grandchildren.&nbsp;Some of Tom’s favorite&nbsp;times&nbsp;were those&nbsp;spent&nbsp;together&nbsp;at the Lake of the Ozarks.

Tom is survived by his wife, Lori of the home in Plainville; children: Shawn Frederking and fiancé Bradi Blanco of Edmond, OK, Brandon Frederking (Kendra) of Bentonville, AR, Katelyn Dunlap (Michael) of Ottawa, KS, and Logan Frederking of Kansas City, MO;&nbsp;siblings: Richard Frederking (Brenda) of Plainville, Dale Frederking of Russellville, AR, Tracy Frederking of Sylvan Grove, KS, and Joanna&nbsp;Donley (Tracy) of Salina, KS; step-mother, Ruby Frederking of Russellville, AR; and three grandchildren: Harper, Henry, and Addison Jo.

He is preceded in death by his parents,&nbsp;Theodore&nbsp;and Saundra Frederking.

Tom was a good-hearted man who worked hard, enjoyed&nbsp;life,&nbsp;and cherished his family and friends. Although he was taken from us far too soon, we know that those we enjoyed and loved, we can never lose, for all that we love deeply becomes a part of us. We can smile because he lived and left us with cherished memories that will live forever in our hearts. He will be remembered in love.

A Mass of Christian Burial was Monday, April 17, 2023, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Plainville. Burial was at the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery.&nbsp;

Thomas A. 'Tom' Frederking

Betty Jean Robinson, 94, of Perham, Minn., passed away on April 9, 2023, of natural causes.

The oldest child of Maurice and Goldie (True) Harding, she was born 
on May 28, 1928, in rural Cheney, Kansas, and graduated from Cheney High 
School in 1946. She went on to earn a bachelor's degree in home 
economics and art at Kansas State University in 1950, later completing 
postgraduate studies at Fort Hays University and the University of 
Minnesota.

While at K-State, Betty Jean met George H. Robinson, and they were 
married in the chapel there on January 27, 1951. They were blessed to 
have three children: Eugene, George and Audrey.

Betty Jean started her career in K-State Extension Education as the 
first home demonstration agent for Lincoln County. She also served as 
home agent for nearby Ellis County and as associate 4-H agent for 
Sedgwick County. Later, she served as dietitian to the first men's 
dormitory at Fort Hays University.

Upon the death of George's brother and business partner Wallace, 
Betty Jean helped her husband run their truck stop, the Robinson 
Transport Inn, and their creamery, Kings Kwality Ice Cream, in Hays, 
Kan. An adventurous capable woman, she spent two summers as the chef for
 Wagons Ho, a covered wagon tourist experience based on the historic 
Butterfield Trail near Quinter, Kan.

Arriving in rural Perham in 1968, Betty Jean substitute-taught for a 
few years at Perham High School and taught adult education classes. She 
volunteered as a 4-H project leader, judged 4-H fairs for many years and
 was active with the Minnesota Horticulture Society. A University of 
Minnesota Master Gardener, Betty Jean, together with George, grew a 
bounty of fruit and vegetables in their Boedigheimer Lake garden.

True to her Christian faith, Betty Jean served her church as a youth 
leader, choir member, board member (including chairing the board) and 
treasurer of United Methodist Women. She also taught both children's and
 adult Sunday School. While serving 25 years as the Perham United 
Methodist Church historian, she authored history booklets commemorating 
church centennials.

A creative spirit, Betty Jean said she was never happier than when 
she was arranging flowers or painting with watercolors. Welcomed into 
the folds of the Perham art community, she took painting classes and 
advanced her skills. She shared her knowledge and passion for watercolor
 by teaching painting to fellow retirees while wintering in her Texas 
retirement community and summering at home in Perham.

Struggling with the pain of rheumatoid arthritis for decades, Betty 
Jean said she was eternally grateful for the loving care her family 
members provided. Even though her physical capabilities diminished over 
time, her mind remained sharp, and her curiosity about the natural world
 proved to be inexhaustible.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George H. Robinson, and 
sisters Maxine Harding and Joan Kannarr. She is survived by her sister 
Darlene Hansen and brother Richard (Marie) Harding; two sons, Eugene 
(Julie Olson) Robinson and George (Carla) Robinson; and daughter, Audrey
 (Craig) Robinson Favorito.

Betty Jean's pride and joy were her ten grandchildren and three-plus great-grandchildren (one on the way).

A memorial service will be held at Perham United Methodist Church on 
June 10, 2023, at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests 
donations be made to the Perham United Methodist Church in her memory.

John L. Schrag, 87, passed away on March 4, 2023. John was born on July 7, 1935 near Moundridge, Kansas, the son of Martin C. and Elsie (Stucky) Schrag. John married Hulda Voth on October 26, 1954 at Tabor Mennonite Church. They started married life together in Denver where John completed his 1W service as a baker’s assistant at Denver General Hospital. John worked in the manufacturing field his whole career with stints at the Hesston Corp, DMI, and the Bradbury Company, among others. Some of his titles included draftsman, experimental engineer, plant superintendent, and production supervisor. John passed his mechanical aptitude on to his children, and lots of time was spent together working on projects in the garage and workshop. John loved his family and he loved giving back to the community. There are many fond memories of him mowing the alfalfa field and hosting weekly softball games for community youth.

In retirement, he used his creativity writing poetry to keep his mind sharp. His goal was to do one 6-line poem each day that he shared with his friends and family. John’s faith was important to him, and he lived it 24/7. Those remaining to celebrate his life include his children Connie, Oris (Kathy), James (MaryBeth), Steve (Marsha), and grandchildren Allison (Ky), Liz (Matt), Nik, Amy, Kelli, and Adam. Richard “Dick” Stover was born July 16, 1942 in Beloit, KS to Henry and Margaret Stover. He peacefully left this world at 3:15 p.m. April 14th, 2023 at Hilltop Lodge Nursing Home Beloit, KS at the age of 80 years old. 

He had two older siblings, sister Johanna and brother John “Al” and a younger brother Thomas.

Dick grew up in Beloit and attended grade and high school at St. John’s Catholic School graduating with the class of 1960. He was active in football, basketball, and track and loved to play baseball in the summer and was a big LA Dodgers fan.

Following graduation, he attended K-State for a year followed by Fort Hays State for a semester. 

He worked during the winters for Farmway Coop for several years but his true love was farming. He took over the family farm with his brother Al after his dad passed away. Even in the last few years of his life, he loved to talk farming and going for a ride to see how the crops were doing. 

Dick joined the National Guard and was very proud to have served his country. 

He has been a faithful and lifelong member of St. John’s Catholic Church and even when out of town, always found a church to attend. He was also a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus.&nbsp; &nbsp;

Dick has always been a true sports fan. He and his brother Al were Chiefs season ticket holders for 40 years. He drove all over the state to watch basketball whether he knew anyone playing or not. Dick was a walking encyclopedia of sports knowledge and loved following his nieces and nephews and even great-nieces and nephews throughout their high school and college sports careers. Dick had quite a collection of sports cards and Sports Illustrated magazines.

Dick loved to gamble and was known to fly to Las Vegas every year either by himself or with his brother Tom or other friends. Dick also enjoyed the horse races in Grand Island and local casinos with friends.

Dick never married or had kids of his own so his family was extremely important to him. He had a great relationship with his siblings, nieces and nephews, and also his great-nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents Henry and Margaret Stover, sister-in-law Janice Stover, brother-in-law Kenny Peters, nephew Dennis Stover, and great-nephew Jake Bowers. 

He is survived by his sister Johanna Peters of Wichita, brother Al Stover of Beloit, brother Tom and wife Karen Stover of Beloit, and many nieces and nephews. 

Dick was a very generous supporter and his life impacted many. He will be deeply missed.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 19 at the temporary St. John's Church location (former Dollar General building). A rosary service will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Roberts Family Funeral Home, and visitation will be from 1 p.m. until the rosary service begins. 

Memorials may be given to the St. John's Restoration Project or St. John's Schools.

Richard 'Dick' Stover

Pastor Earl Jack Haggard, 69, of Cawker City, Kansas, and formerly of
 Russell, Kansas, entered into his eternal reward on &nbsp;Thursday, April 
13, 2023, at the University of Kansas Health System Hospital in Kansas 
City, Kansas.

Earl was born on February 9, 1954, in Abilene, Kansas, the son of 
Cliff Youngblood “Jack” and Delores May (Rager) Haggard.&nbsp; The family 
moved to Texas and Earl lived there until he was in the 6th 
grade then moved back to Abilene.&nbsp; He finished his schooling at Abilene 
High School in the class of 1972.&nbsp; He met, fell in love, and was united 
in marriage to Paula Miles on December 16, 1977, in Huntington, 
Indiana.&nbsp; From this union Earl and Paula were blessed with a daughter 
Hannah.&nbsp; Early in life, he was called into full time Christian Ministry.
 Through his affiliation with the United Brethren Church, and the United
 Methodist Church, he served churches in Colby, Abilene, Gypsum, Kipp, 
Russell Otterbein, Bunker Hill, Independence, Cawker City and Glen Elder
 Kansas. He also served in Junction City, Ohio. He enjoyed researching 
genealogy, reading, watching crime TV, spending time with his friends 
and family and was a fanatical Dallas Cowboys fan.

The surviving family includes his wife Paula, daughter Hannah and dog
 Archibald Oscar all of the home.&nbsp; He was preceded in death by his 
parents, brother Dean Haggard, special aunt Bertie Boaz, who helped 
raise him, and his beloved dog, Brutus Alexander.

A celebration of Pastor Earl’s life will be held at 10:30 A.M. on 
Wednesday, April 19, 2023, at the Otterbein United Methodist Church in 
Russell, Kansas.&nbsp; Later that day, a graveside service will be held at 
3:00 P.M. at the Abilene Memorial Cemetery in Abilene, Kansas. Pastor 
Earl loved bright colors, and since this is a celebration of his life, 
the family asks that you wear bright colors on Wednesday! Visitation 
will be held at the Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary in Russell, Kansas,

Stephen L. Mick, 71, Minneapolis, died Tuesday, April 11, 2023, at the Salina Regional Health Center.&nbsp; He was born August 17, 1951, in Beloit to James and Leola (Belden) Mick.

Steve was a 1969 graduate of Bennington High School.&nbsp; 

After serving a four year apprenticeship, he worked for 44 years with the Local 441 Plumbers and Pipefitters Union where he became a foreman and supervisor. 

He also served six years in the United States Air Force Reserves.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife of 35 years, Patricia (Simpson) Mick; and his brother, Michael Mick; and stepbrother, Gary Copple.

Survivors are his wife Karen; daughters Sharie Thille and Kris Schwartz and her husband Mitch; stepson, DuWayne Suffield and his wife Jodi; brother Norman Mick and his wife Nancy; sister-in-law Leanna Mick; stepbrothers Roger and John Copple; grandchildren Alyssa, Kaden, and Ky Schwartz, Morgan, Logan, and Leiryn Thille; Braden and Mallory Suffield, and Bryce and Meggan Suffield; great-grandchildren Hayley and Caleb Suffield, Presley Werth, Dexter and Asher Dreher, and Leonard and Theoden Pinzenscham; mother-in-law, Irmagene Goodman; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Marvin Elm, age 86, died at the Washington County Hospital on April 12, 2023.&nbsp;

 He was born the youngest of four, and only boy to Andrew and Laura (Schwalm) Elm in Baldwin City, KS on July 26, 1936.&nbsp; 

Marvin graduated from Assaria High School in 1954. 

He married RaNay Schiffman on April 12, 1958, in Seattle Washington. To this union two sons and a daughter were born, Kevin, Brian, and Kimberly.&nbsp; 

Marvin worked as the branch manager at the Clay Center office for Interstate Securities Company. He then worked for Conseco Finance in Topeka, KS retiring in 2001. 

Marvin and RaNay spent their retirement years traveling the continental United States in their motor home, eventually settling in San Benito, TX in 2015. They moved to Morganville in 2021.&nbsp; 

He is preceded in death by his parents; son, Brian; and his sisters, Mildred, Esther, and Lorraine.

Leo M. Baker, 89, Minneapolis, passed away Friday, April 14, 2023, at the Ottawa County Health Center, Minneapolis.&nbsp; He was born January 7, 1934, in Ottawa County to Guy and Ina (Smith) Baker.

Leo was a 1951 graduate of Minneapolis High School, and he served in the United States Army from 1955-56.&nbsp; 

He married his high school sweetheart, Evelyn Liby, on June 21, 1953. 

He worked for the City of Minneapolis for 42 years and served on the Minneapolis Fire Department for 31 years. Leo was a member of the V.F.W. Post #3201 and the First United Methodist Church.

Evelyn passed away on February 26, 1981. He married his second love, Marilyn Breneman Smith, on December 10, 1981. They were married for 41 special years.

Besides Evelyn, he was preceded in death by his parents; son Kenny Baker; grandson Doug Cain; and sister Norma Lee Johnson.

Survivors are his wife Marilyn; daughters Darla Cain-Karst and her husband Sam and Sandra Hendrix and her husband Kenny; sons Mike Smith and his wife Kim, Mark Smith and his wife Kellea, and Marvin Smith; grandchildren Matt Villalpando, Devon Hart and her husband Dan, Mark Cain and his wife Sarah, Jessica Owens and her husband Tyrel, Kassi Jones and her husband Scott, Sheyanne Krier and her husband, Alijah, Zach Smith and his fiance Lauren Cyr, Drew Smith and his wife Fayth, Alyssa Breen and her husband Garrett, Trevor Smith and his wife Nikki, Amanda Ervin and her husband Derek, and James Villalpando and his fiancé Cait; and 17 great-grandchildren. Lloyd Elmer Stanton was born December 26, 1939, in Parkville, Missouri, the son of Jaspar and Arlene (Carver) Stanton. 

He graduated high school from Jennings (Kansas) then went on to Kansas City Community College where he studied business law and accounting. 

In 1966, he married Sharon (Guise) Brown, who had been widowed. Without hesitation, Lloyd took on the responsibility of Sharon’s three children and they were blessed with a daughter. Lloyd was united in marriage to Leanna (Becker) Goosman on May 19, 2018.

Having lost the lower part of his left leg as a child in a farm accident, Lloyd did not let that slow him down. His artificial leg was just as much of a tool to him as his hammer (it came in handy when dogs on a job site needed something to bite). He could climb ladders, roof houses, and put in skylights–it didn’t matter what it was, Lloyd could do it.

Lloyd was a loving father, husband, and friend. He came to know the Lord in his early 20s and continued to walk in faith throughout his life. Lloyd relied on God’s strength through thick and thin; God was always faithful to provide. He regularly attended church until he was physically unable to. Even when he could no longer go to church, he and Leanna hosted Bible studies in their home.

Lloyd spent 20 years in the mortgage banking business and over 30 years doing construction and remodeling. He was loved by many and always aimed to please. He did everything with excellence and was a true craftsman when it came to his fine woodwork. With Lloyd you could count on humility (he often said, “I’m just a carpenter”) and laughter.

Lloyd passed away Wednesday, April 12, 2023. 

He is survived by his loving wife Leanna of Bennington; children Cynthia Frese and husband Glen of Montrose, Colorado, Steven Brown and wife Erma of Salina, Karen Gray and husband Glenn of Francesville, Indiana, and Sheryl Allen and husband Darrel of Little Rock, Arkansas; 10 grandchildren, Suzanne Birk, Terry Frese, Raymond Brown, Rhonda Cox, James Brown, Andrew Brown, Anthony Gray, Jason Gray, Heather Allen, and Bobbie Lynn Mulberry; 20 great-grandchildren; stepsons Brady and Barry Blake and nine stepgrandchildren; sister, Marge Prince of Missouri and brother Gail Bailey of Kansas.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother Harold Stanton and his wife Sharon; and three grandchildren, Heidi Gray, and Keith and Jacob Mulberry.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m., Friday, April 21, 2023, at the Bennington Bible Church, 824 N. Nelson, Bennington, KS, with Pastor Carson Johnson officiating. The family will receive friends starting at 9:00 a.m. Graveside services will be at 3:00 p.m. at the Pleasant View Cemetery in Logan, KS.

Patrick Andrew “Pat” Seeman, 83, passed away April 13, 2023, at Diversicare of Larned. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Pat was born November 23, 1939, the oldest of 6 children, to Junior 
and Maudie (Hill) Seeman in Larned, KS. He attended a country school 
north of Larned close to his family farm. Later, he lived with his 
grandparents while attending Larned High School, graduating in 1957.

Pat received track and football scholarships to Garden City Community
 College. Shortly before graduating, a new coach at Garden City 
Community College recruited him to play at Oklahoma State University. 
However, the National Guard called him to serve. He spent several months
 at Ft. Smith in Arkansas. He later attended 1 year at Fort Hays State 
University. He met and married Laurie Niedens, they were married for 
over 56 years, later divorcing.

Pat began his long banking career with BIC in Great Bend, KS. He was 
transferred around the state as he worked his way up. In 1976, he was 
hired by the First State Bank of Larned and was able to return to his 
home town as a loan officer, primarily focusing on ag lending.

He enjoyed over 20 years of refereeing football and basketball. Pat 
was an avid hunter and trapper, actually being appointed by the State of
 Kansas to trap nuisance animals. He spent time volunteering with 
Pheasants Forever.

After his retirement, Pat spent years attending Carr Auctions buying 
and collecting antiques, particularly enjoying art glass and pottery.

He is survived by: two children, Shellie Thill, husband David, of 
Bella Vista, AR, Michael Seeman and wife Leigh Anne of Larned, KS; four 
grandchildren and three step grandchildren: Emilie Thill, fiancé Brad 
Carlson, Kansas City, MO, Ashlie Nevola, husband Dylan, Kansas City, MO,
 Thomas Thill, wife Haley, Derby, KS, Katie Carlton, husband Brian, 
Larned, KS, Tyler Stelter, Orlando, FL, Megan Stelter, Salina, KS, and 
Jack Stelter, Manhattan, KS; two great grandchildren, Emmett and Jocee

HOPE - Walter “Wally” Lee Gruber, 76, of Hope, KS passed away at home on April 11, 2023. He was born on January 1, 1947, to Martin and Katie (Katherine Krause) Gruber, in Hope, KS. 

Wally made his life in Hope, where he attended school and graduated from Hope High in 1965.&nbsp; 

After high school he spent several years in the Army Reserves, used his skills as a carpenter to build numerous homes in the area and assist with 4-H projects, and was a long-time dedicated farmer, growing crops and raising cattle.&nbsp; Wally was also a member of the Kansas Young Farmers Association and enjoyed hunting and fishing in his younger years, occasionally taking out-of-state fishing adventures.&nbsp; In his later years he was able to lend his many skills in helping to complete renovations on the building that now houses the Hope Historical Museum. 

He is survived by his brother Rano Gruber of Hope, sister-in-law Vicki Gruber of Hope; nieces and nephew Kelli (Ryan) Almes of Manhattan and Kai Gruber of Manhattan; greatnieces and nephews Kendon and Della Almes and Ethan, Aiden, and Abigail Gruber.&nbsp; 

He is preceded in death by his parents Martin and Katie, brother John Gruber, and nephew Chris Gruber.&nbsp; 

Wally’s family and friends will gather on Monday April 17, 2023, at 11 a.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery, Lyons Creek, for a graveside service. A celebration of life will be held at the First National Bank Annex and Community Center following the graveside service on Monday.

Juan Bustamante-Espinoza, 30, passed away on April 09, 2023 in Salina, Ks. Juan was born on December 27, 1992 in Salem, Oregon to parents Bruno Bustamante and Narsedalia Espinoza. Juan would say he would find the feeling of peace when he would work out at the gym. He loved to go and always tried to find someone to go with him. He enjoyed spending time with his nieces, spoiling them and bonding with them. Every time he went to his sister's house first thing he would do was raid her fridge to get a homecooked meal. Every time his brother Teddy came in to town they always, always, had to go play pool. Just like every New Year's for the past four years it became a family tradition to ring in the new years playing cards with the whole family. Juan had the charisma to make friends wherever he went, no matter the situation he always said hi with a sincere smile. He wanted to go to Mexico this year to visit his parents after 11 years of not seeing them. Juan was working as a formation operator at Stryten Manufacturing. Preceded in death by Bruno Bustamante (father). Juan is survived by Narsedalia Espinoza (mother), Elizabeth Morris (sister), Tyler S. Morris (brother-in-law), Teodoro Bustamante (brother), Juan Bustamante (uncle), Concepcion Bustamante (aunt), Sabina Diaz (niece), Gracie Diaz (niece), Natalie A. Morris (niece). John D. Snedden, also known as “JD,” son of John D. Snedden Sr. and Evelyn V. (Hobbie) Snedden, was born on February 28, 1939 in Osborne, KS. He went to be with our Lord on April 11, 2023.

He grew up in Beloit, KS and graduated from Beloit High School in 1956. 

After graduation he joined the Navy. He served his country from November 14, 1957, until October 30, 1961. His duties were served on the USS Currituck. His occupation was hydraulics assembler.

On March 26, 1960, he married Janet Heidrick and later divorced. To this union four children were born, daughters Chris (JB) File, Gina (Robert) Chitty, Kimberly Kay, (deceased) and a son, Shannon (Kelly).

During his lifetime he drove a truck for 7-Up in Beloit, and a local co-op in Beloit. He worked for Archer Daniel Midland, ADM, as a welder, in Salina, and retired for about six months and went work for Ellsworth Correctional Facility, as a guard. He also did a short stint as a guard at the Minneapolis jail.

JD’s favorite pastime hobbies were hunting with his cousins in Smith Center, and fishing with his son and a couple friends out in Assaria. Making furniture was also something he liked doing. He also liked going to our local racetrack once in a while. He attended several cooking seminars and was a great cook.

He married Carol Snedden on June 23,1983.&nbsp; Rob McKown was also brought into his family at that time.

He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Kimberly; brothers Frank (George) and Larry, and father-in-law Max Slothower.

He is survived by his wife Carol; daughters Chris (JB) File, Gina (Robert) Chitty; son Shannon (Kelly) Snedden and stepson Rob McKown; a sister, Nancy Heiman and seven grandkids, and eight great-grandkids and a host of nieces, nephews and friends and family.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 a.m. Monday, April 17, 2023, at St. Mary Queen of the Universe Catholic Church. Inurnment will be in the All Saints Catholic Cemetery, Salina.

Memorials are suggested to the family to help defray medical expenses.

Larry Edward Larson, son of George C. Larson and Ruby A. Aspegren Larson was born August 9, 1943, in Concordia, Kansas. He passed away April 10, 2023, as the result of a tractor accident in rural Scandia, KS, at the age of 79 years, 8 months.

Larry attended school in Scandia and graduated from Scandia Rural High School in 1961. He attended college at Fort Hays State University and Kansas State University, receiving a bachelor of science degree in agriculture from KSU in 1968.&nbsp;&nbsp;

On May 28, 1973, Larry was united in marriage to Coleen M. Kemper at St. John’s Catholic Church in Logan, Kansas. The couple made their home in rural Scandia. To this union, Karen, Kelly, Edward, and Kristen were born.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Throughout his life Larry was a farmer, rancher, and truck driver. 

He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, neighbor, and friend to many. Also, he was an active member of St. Edward’s Catholic Church and the Scandia Lions Club. In countless ways, Larry spent his life serving his faith, family, farm, and friends and will be dearly missed by many.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents George and Ruby Larson, his brothers Gene Larson, Don Larson, Harold Larson, and Richard Larson, and sister Helen Sankey.
