Cynthia Clara (Avila) Merrill, 83, was welcomed home to join her loved ones and her Lord Jesus Christ on January 28, 2025. She was born November 3rd, 1941 in North Dartmouth, Massachusetts to Joseph and Mary (Motta) Avila.&nbsp;On September 5th, 1959, she married Gary James Merrill.&nbsp;&nbsp; They made Salina, Kansas their home to work and raise their family. Cindy worked at Duffens Optical as a clerk for over 30 years.

 Cindy had many friends but she loved being with family most of all. Rarely did she miss one of her grandchildren's many events. She and Gary became snowbirds in retirement and headed to Florida in the winter months. Their RV was home in the sunny state and was also parked many days in the summer at Milford Lake. 

They have been season ticket holders to Kansas State Football since the early 70's and still have the same seats. As the family grew, seats were purchased around them and the family has a total of 18. We all know better not to schedule anything on a day the Wildcats play at home. After Gary's death in 2013, Cindy and her daughters started delivering Meals on Wheels one week a month for 11 years.&nbsp; Cindy leaves behind many who adore her and feel the void as much as her family does. She was always ready for an adventure with us. Four wheeling in the mountains, white water rafting in Colorado, parasailing in Florida, paddleboarding at Wilson Lake, riding horses in Branson and any concert in the area are just a few. She is preceded in death by her husband Gary, her parents Joseph and Mary Avila, her brothers James and Joseph Jr., her sisters, little Shirley who passed at the age of 4, Betty Avila and Shirley Avila.&nbsp; Father and Mother-in-law Russell and Winifred Merrill, Brother-in-law Mike Merrill and Sister-in-Law Marilyn Herwig.

Survivors include her three children, David (Carol) Merrill, Briana (John) Olson, and Linda (Dan) Mendicina. Sister Rosalie (Louie) Baptiste, and sister-in-law Suzanne Canada. Grandchildren, Chelsey (Adrian) Nolasco, Shawncie (Ryan) Hamilton, Hailie (Warren) King, Dylan Mendicina, Paige (Michael) Cook, Joshua (Jessica) Olson, Carlie Olson, Chris (Jennifer) Fritz, Justin (Melissa) Fritz, and Jackie (Sergio) Correa, 17 great grandchildren and two twin boys due in April. Also, many nieces, nephews and her faithful four legged buddy, Chevy. &nbsp;

We will celebrate Cindy's life February 21, 2025 at First Covenant Church, 2625 E. Magnolia, Salina, Kansas at 10:30 am. Lunch will follow immediately after the service followed by a private burial for family members.

Memorials may be made to Meals On Wheels or the Salina Animal Shelter.

Thank you for loving our Cindy as much as we do. She was such a gem in our family and made everything in life so much fun. Our loss is truly Heaven's gain. Her great grandson Jace described her perfectly….she made our dark clouds disappear and brought in the sunlight.

With profound faith and a heart filled with love, Linda Sue Weiland, 76, of Minneapolis, Kansas, passed away on February 12, 2025, surrounded by her loving family.

Sue was born in Salina, Kansas on February 24,&nbsp;1948, daughter of Francis “Buck” and LaVada (Hofflinger) Istas.

She and Steve Barnett were married July 5, 1969, and two sons, Eric and Justin were born. On October 14, 1989, she was united in marriage to William (Bill) Weiland. They lived most of their married life in Bennington, Kansas. She retired from Bennett Autoplex in Salina, Kansas after working for more than 30 years. Sue loved gardening, decorating for all the holidays, and making “birthday signs” for her family.

She was a devoted parishioner of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Minneapolis, Kansas and she found great strength in prayer.

Beloved by all who knew her, Sue is survived in death by her sons, Justin Barnett (Jenny) of Tescott, Kansas,&nbsp; Jeremy (Diane) Weiland of Ellsworth, Kansas; and daughter, Meredith (Nick) Gleason; grandchildren, Brookelyn, Luke, Owen, Bristol, Brynlee and Jessica; sisters Midge (Terry) Gartner and Nancy Muehl of Minneapolis, Kansas; Aunts Shirley Lott of Minneapolis, Kansas and Theresa Peltier of Concordia, Kansas; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Michael “Wally” Roy Gray, of Salina, Kansas, passed away Tuesday, February 11th, 2025, peacefully in the presence of his family

Mike was born in North Platte, Nebraska on September 11, 1959, to Bob and Lois Gray (Camenga).

Mike (Wally) grew up in Imperial, Nebraska and graduated from Chase County High School. He spent many weekends and summers farming with his family. He maintained his love of farming throughout his life by helping various farmers around Salina and he had a large garden for many years.

Mike has spent the past 30 years as a mechanic on industrial turbochargers for Cooper Machinery Service in Salina, Kansas.

In his free time, he loved skiing, hunting, ATVing, watching Nebraska Husker football and the Kansas City Chiefs. He was an avid welder, and he created some beautiful metal sculptures. Wally was not a stranger to anyone, and he leaves behind a large host of friends and family. There was nothing more important to him than keeping in touch with those he cared about.

Survivors include his mother, Lois Gray; sisters, Gretchen Sutherland (Tim), Carrie Johnson (Brian); brothers, Kass Gray (Melinda), Todd Gray (Maureen), Dirk Gray (Sandra) and his devoted and loving dog Bella.

He is also survived by nephews and nieces, Jill Smith, Brooke Kotz, Kyle Gray, Adam Johnson, Karlee Grant, Skyler Sutherland, Alex Gray, Brittney Scherrer, Kade Gray, Joel Gray and numerous great nephews and nieces.

Michael is preceded in death by his father, Robert Gray, paternal grandparents, Roy and Mary Gray, maternal grandparents, Silas and Lillian Camenga.

Mike chose cremation and services will be announced at a later date.

Jimmie “Jim” Lee Ehrlich, 85, of Wilson, KS, passed away on February 11, 2025, at the Salina Regional Health Center in Salina, KS. He was born on May 14, 1939, in Susank, KS to Julius and Eunice (Steinle) Ehrlich. He married LaNita Thompson on March 11, 1965, in Salina, and together they were blessed with four sons: Rob, Monty, Cliff, and Cody.

Jim grew up in Claflin, Kansas and attended Claflin High School. He proudly served in the United States Navy as a Machinist’s Mate. Throughout his life, Jim had a varied and successful career, working as the Vice President for Ehrlich Drilling Company and was owner/operator of A-1 Radiator and J&amp;L Trucking both based in Wilson. He also served as a general maintenance and repair technician for the Kansas Department of Wildlife &amp; Parks. Jim was a board member of the Rolling Hills Electric Cooperative. He was proud to be a licensed private pilot.

A man of many interests and commitments, Jim was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, a Master Mason with the Freemasons, a Shriner with Iris Temple, and a member of the American Legion. His dedication to family, community, and country was reflected in all that he did.

Jim is survived by his wife, LaNita of the home in Wilson; sons, Rob (Kristy) Ehrlich of Tulsa, Monty (Susie) Ehrlich of Topeka, Cliff (Michelle) Ehrlich of Topeka, and Cody Ehrlich of Salina; sisters-in-law, Annie Ehrlich of Haven, KS, and Vera Ehrlich of Wilson; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Julius and Eunice Ehrlich, and brothers, Darrell and Tom Ehrlich.

Jim’s presence will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who knew him.

Jimmie “Jim” Lee Ehrlich

Norma E. Bruns, 106, of McPherson, KS, and formerly of Abilene, KS, passed away on Thursday, January 30, 2025, at Pine Village, Moundridge.

Norma was born on a farm east of Milford, KS on August 26, 1918, the second of six children born to Charles Ernest Martin and Johannah Augusta (Steinbruck) Martin. She grew up in the Longford area, graduating valedictorian of the Longford High School class of 1936. She started her teaching career that fall under a Normal Training Certificate, just two weeks after her 18th birthday. She later got her Bachelor’s degree from Kansas State University and continued teaching until 1980.

She taught at several one-room schools in the Milford and Longford areas, as well as in public schools in Junction City, Chapman and Abilene. She taught a great number of students over the years and most always had a positive attitude and great hopes for each one. At age 99, Norma was putting names on pictures of her students from 1943.

She also taught me that a cinnamon roll will catch fire in a microwave if you cook it long enough (9+ minutes, but who is counting?). These things you learn from life’s experiences.

She loved music and played piano and after her prized piano at home became unrepairable, she had the shell made into 2 blanket chests. Her passions were family and friends, music, birds, books and her devotion to God.

She married Kenneth Ivan Bruns on January 24, 1950 and had one child, Kendall Dean Bruns. They were later divorced.

She outlived her parents, five siblings, a niece (Sherry Puckett) and four nephews (Tom Diehl, Lowell Brown, Dana Brown and Stephen Brown).

She is survived by her son Dean and his wife Julie of McPherson, KS; grandchildren Jayme (Roy) Hamilton of Phoenix AZ, Michael (Amanda) Bruns of McPherson, KS, and Carolyn (Lee) Collins of Stem, NC; great-grandchildren Braedon Hamilton, Aliya Bruns, Evan Bruns, and Annalise Collins (another is expected in June).

Other survivors include nieces Denise (Mike) Poorman of Lynnwood, WA and Pam (Carl) Rowson of Savage, MN; nephews Terry (Diana) Owens of Los Fresnos, TX and Martin (Kay) Brown of Omaha, NE.

She cherished a great many friendships over the years.

Norma was fiercely independent, resourceful and at times, more than a little bit stubborn. With help from her family and other caregivers, Norma was able to stay in her own home until the final three months of her life.

Norma E. Bruns, 106

Esther R. (Montague) Harner, 90, of Salina, Kan., passed away Monday, February 10, 2025. She was born October 12, 1934, in Minneapolis, Kan., to Floyd E. and Bertha E. (Ayers) Montague. Esther was one of 11 children and grew up and attended school in Minneapolis.

Esther was a devoted mother, wife and friend to many.&nbsp; Her favorite activities included cooking large meals for her family, baking, and spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.&nbsp; She loved to garden and her peonies were the envy of many.&nbsp; She fiercely loved her family and was happiest when she was surrounded by them.&nbsp; She has been described as the “rock” of her family and will be dearly missed by her children and grandchildren.

Esther enjoyed doing volunteer work and would often bring a casserole, provide transportation, or assist with finances for those in need. She was an active member of the Cornerstone Community Church (Free Methodist Church) holding positions in teaching, music, and was treasurer for World Missions for 40 years. She was a life member of the Free Methodist Church.

She is preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, Don J. Harner; brothers, Elmer “Bob”, Virgil, Victor, Billy, Frank “Bud”, and Larry; sisters, Elma Postlethwaite, Josephine Werneke, Verla Smith, and Albertha Adam.

Esther was one of 11 children and grew up and attended school in Minneapolis.Esther was a devoted mother, wife and friend to many.&nbsp; Her favorite activities included cooking large meals for her family, baking, and spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.&nbsp; She loved to garden and her peonies were the envy of many.&nbsp; She fiercely loved her family and was happiest when she was surrounded by them.&nbsp; She has been described as the “rock” of her family and will be dearly missed by her children and grandchildren.Esther enjoyed doing volunteer work and would often bring a casserole, provide transportation, or assist with finances for those in need. She was an active member of the Cornerstone Community Church (Free Methodist Church) holding positions in teaching, music, and was treasurer for World Missions for 40 years. She was a life member of the Free Methodist Church.She is preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, Don J. With heavy hearts yet smiling faces, we announce the peaceful passing of Rosa Lee Lucas-Hall on February 6th, 2025. Born on July 6, 1932, in Ottawa County, Oklahoma to Sara Alma Crabtree (née Newcomb) and Charlie Benton Crabtree. Rosa Lee graced us with 92 fabulous years filled with laughter, love, and an unending zest for life.

Rosa Lee was born to loving parents and raised on a farm with 5 siblings: Clifford, Harry, James, Nellie, and Sue; where she learned and demonstrated hard work, self-sufficiency, and, if her stories are to be believed, a history full of adventures mischievously forgotten to time. From a young age, Rosa Lee had an infectious laugh and a penchant for turning even the dullest moments into a grand adventure.

Never one to sit still, Rosa Lee began working as a waitress early in life and was fortunate to make the acquaintance of a quiet plumber named William Travis Lucas. Outgoing and spunky, Rosa Lee turned out to be the perfect match for William and they married in 1951 and raised three wonderful children: Charlie Rhodes, Deborah (Tackett) and Beverly (Rohr). From opening Lucas Plumbing in Salina, building a house, owning a farm with ducks, chickens and a horse (named Diamond), taking the RV to Glacier National Park, traveling to annual family reunions in Baxter Springs, and fishing all over Kansas, Rosa Lee was always on the go, even if not leaving town!

After the passing of William in 2000, Rosa Lee was blessed to befriend and fall in love with Bill Hall of Derby, Kansas. They married in 2011 and spent their time traveling, dancing, and enjoying life together. Bill passed in 2013, which was way too soon for such a vibrant couple.

Rosa Lee leaves behind a family as vibrant as she was – daughters Deborah and Beverly; grandchildren Preston, Nathan, and Jason (Tackett), and Heather, Carrie, Travis, and Tiffany (Rohr); 15 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren who carry forward her spirit of vivacity and kindness. She taught us all that life is too short to take seriously and that love, and laughter are the best legacies one can leave behind. Her grandchildren, all adults now, will forever remember how Granny would always mute the television when they visit, offer coffee made from a percolator so hot you’d think it was heated by the sun, and try to persuade us that mincemeat pie is a superior desert choice while sitting in a kitchen filled with rooster décor.

Rosa Lee Lucas-Hall may have left this world, but her laughter echoes in our hearts, reminding us to find joy in every moment.

There will be a visitation from 11:00 AM until service time at 1:00 PM on Saturday, February 15, 2025 both being held in the Roselawn Memorial Heights Chapel; 1920 E. Crawford, Salina, KS 67401. Interment will follow in the Roselawn Memorial Park Cemetery.

Jerry Gene Patterson, 81, of Wakefield, KS died on February 8, 2025, at the Good Shepherd Hospice House in Manhattan, KS.

Born in Syracuse, KS, to Eugene and Linda (Weinman), Patterson, Zordel, Jerry was a devoted son, husband, father, grandfather, and friend. While leading freshman tours in college, he met the love of his life, Norma Jean (Jeannie) Boor, whom he married on September 7, 1964. Together, they built a life filled with love, raising four children: Craig Patterson, Christine (Tom) Fritzsche, Clay (Tammy) Patterson, and Kathy (Erik) Ganstrom. He cherished his 13 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

A graduate of Hill City High School and Fort Hays State University, Jerry’s leadership qualities emerged early, as he naturally stepped into roles that found him. He dedicated 40 years to banking in Wakefield, KS, beginning as a teller and working his way up to President, CEO, and Chairman of the Board at Farmers and Merchants State Bank. He was appointed by Governor Mike Hayden to serve two terms on the Kansas State Banking Board, three years of which he was the Chairman.

Beyond his profession, Jerry was deeply committed to his community. He was passionate about the Kansas Landscape Arboretum, where he played a vital role in its leadership, promotion, and ongoing care. Jerry was an Eagle Scout with the Boy Scouts of America, earned the St. George Emblem, and lived by the principles of the Scout Law. He served with the Kansas Guardianship Program, providing conservatorships for over 25 individuals. Most recently, he served on the Catholic Foundation Board for the Salina Diocese.

Jerry’s gift for storytelling brought family history and tall tales to life in his writing. An avid outdoorsman, he found joy in nature and cherished every opportunity to share his love for hunting, fishing, and adventure with his grandchildren. His wonderful sense of humor filled our lives with laughter, bringing warmth and joy to every gathering. Joshua Ryan Leck, 47, of rural McPherson, KS, died Friday, February 7, 2025.&nbsp;

Joshua was born on January 14, 1978, to John and Mary (Shaw) Leck in Washington, KS, where he grew up with his three younger siblings: Jessica, Justin, and Johnny. He graduated from Washington High School. Joshua was an outstanding student with a love for the outdoors. He was fond of walking the creeks and pastures of the family farms and while working for the Farm Service Agency conservation district.&nbsp;

Joshua met his wife of 25 years, Shana (Irish), while majoring in Chemistry at Fort Hays State University. They married on May 22, 1999, at the City Park in DeSoto, KS. In the same year, Joshua began his most-loved career, gaining the title “Dad” at the birth of their firstborn son, Aaron. He enriched his faith under mentorship of the pastoral team and community of Hays Christian Church. He graduated from FHSU with a BS in Chemistry in 2001.&nbsp;

After establishing a home in McPherson, KS, where Joshua was a chemist for 23 years at Pfizer Pharmaceutical Plant, his family grew to include Elizabeth and Elijah.&nbsp;

In addition to being a chemist, Joshua was an ordained minister and part of the pastoral team at Monitor Community Church of the Brethren for a number of years. He was also a foster parent to many children. In the roles of pastor and foster parent, he delighted in gleaning wisdom from others, especially the kids.&nbsp;

In 2006, the family moved to a small acreage in rural McPherson County, where Joshua rekindled his love of Kansas prairies by planting trees and restoring pastures to native grasses. With a love for all things that grow, his largest joys included romping through the pasture, tending the animals, and storytelling with his children. Joshua cherished opportunities to pick mulberries, watch sunsets, and scatter seed by hand. He was fond of firewood stacking and woodworking.&nbsp;

Joshua sought God’s truth in the mountains as much as the prairie. He traveled lightly, with only his hat, boots, canvas bag, and just enough sustenance to nourish his body and soul. Accompanied by his family, he filled his journal and photo albums with notes and images of trees. In the Cottonwood, Burr Oak, Persimmon, and Ancient Redwood alike, he marveled in God’s creation and love.&nbsp;

As a son, husband, dad, pastor, and co-worker, he sought to imitate Christ and engage with others as neighbor and friend.&nbsp;In all his communities, he was known as a quiet, gentle soul who loved with his whole self.&nbsp;

Survived by his wife, Shana; children, Aaron, Elizabeth, and Elijah (Malia); parents, John and Mary Leck of Washington, KS; siblings, Jessica Leck, Justin (Emily) Leck, and Johnny (Michelle) Leck; and a niece, aunts, uncles, and cousins.&nbsp;

Tammy Jo Main

David Allen Ditto, 81, of Abilene, Kansas died Sunday, February 9, 2025 at his home&nbsp;surrounded by&nbsp;his&nbsp;family. He was born on November 7, 1943 in Salina, Kansas to John (Jack) and Olive (Forsythe) Ditto. On August 5, 1962 he married Janice Prater. Together they had three children, Chandra, David&nbsp;Jr.&nbsp;and Troy.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, John Ditto, sister, Shirley Acklin and infant son David Ditto Jr.&nbsp;

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Janice; daughter Chandra (Hank) Steckman and son Troy (Darci) Ditto; 4 grandchildren, Drew Miley, Courtney (Brett) Cross, Brody Ditto, Reece Ditto; and&nbsp;six&nbsp;great grandchildren, David Miley, Dannie&nbsp;Mae Miley, Gracie&nbsp;Case, Derek Miley, Eli Case and Mack Cross.&nbsp;

Dave spent most of his working career as a welder/machinist working for Exline Inc. and then Turbine Specialties&nbsp;where he retired&nbsp;in 1998. Dave and Janice,&nbsp;together,&nbsp;owned and operated Ditto Kennels in Abilene, Kansas where they raised and trained racing greyhounds for themselves, as well as many customers from all over the world.

Dave had a love for all things “animal.” He raised and cared for about every animal you could imagine in his lifetime. Dogs, pigeons, and horses took up most of his time, but horses were truly his passion. He raised&nbsp;Quarter&nbsp;Horses, and together with his wife, operated as D&amp;J Quarter Horse Ranch for over thirty years. They raised, trained, and showed horses all over the United States.&nbsp;

Dave was the President of the Eastern Kansas Horseman Association for many&nbsp;years, and served as a Horse Show judge for many&nbsp;area&nbsp;shows and fairs.&nbsp;

Dave’s hobbies included raising show pigeons, racing pigeons, and raising and training hunting dogs. He spent many nights “coon hunting” and many days “coyote hunting” with family and friends.&nbsp;

 </figure>David Allen Ditto, 81, of Abilene, Kansas died Sunday, February 9, 2025 at his home&nbsp;surrounded by&nbsp;his&nbsp;family. He was born on November 7, 1943 in Salina, Kansas to John (Jack) and Olive (Forsythe) Ditto. On August 5, 1962 he married Janice Prater. Together they had three children, Chandra, David&nbsp;Jr.&nbsp;and Troy.He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, John Ditto, sister, Shirley Acklin and infant son David Ditto Jr.&nbsp;He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Janice; daughter Chandra (Hank) Steckman and son Troy (Darci) Ditto; 4 grandchildren, Drew Miley, Courtney (Brett) Cross, Brody Ditto, Reece Ditto; and&nbsp;six&nbsp;great grandchildren, David Miley, Dannie&nbsp;Mae Miley, Gracie&nbsp;Case, Derek Miley, Eli Case and Mack Cross.&nbsp;Dave spent most of his working career as a welder/machinist working for Exline Inc. and then Turbine Specialties&nbsp;where he retired&nbsp;in 1998. Dave and Janice,&nbsp;together,&nbsp;owned and operated Ditto Kennels in Abilene, Kansas where they raised and trained racing greyhounds for themselves, as well as many customers from all over the world.Dave had a love for all things “animal.” He raised and cared for about every animal you could imagine in his lifetime. Dogs, pigeons, and horses took up most of his time, but horses were truly his passion. He raised&nbsp;Quarter&nbsp;Horses, and together with his wife, operated as D&amp;J Quarter Horse Ranch for over thirty years. They raised, trained, and showed horses all over the United States.&nbsp;Dave was the President of the Eastern Kansas Horseman Association for many&nbsp;years, and served as a Horse Show judge for many&nbsp;area&nbsp;shows and fairs.&nbsp;Dave’s hobbies included raising show pigeons, racing pigeons, and raising and training hunting dogs. David Allen Ditto

Martha Ann "Marty" Ashenfelter, a beloved longtime resident of Salina, Kansas, passed away on January 23, 2025, at the age of 99. Born on April 23, 1925, in Salina, she was the daughter of Ferdinand and Victoria (Gehr) Kubitschek and the youngest of three children.

Martha graduated from Washington High School in 1943 and married Russel L. Ashenfelter on October 27, 1949, at Sacred Heart Cathedral in Salina. Russel, originally from Linville, Virginia, was stationed at Schilling Air Force Base in Salina. Martha dedicated 12 years to working in the Stiefel’s Department Store office. When the Stiefel family sold the business to Klines Department Store in 1974, she continued her service for another 20 years until Kline’s closure in 1994. She also worked part-time at Warden’s Ready to Wear office until April 1994.

Martha was a devoted member of Sacred Heart Cathedral of Salina and, previously, the Kansas Native Daughters. She enjoyed cooking, sewing, crocheting, crafts, gardening, solving word find puzzles, TV game shows and news, reading newspapers and magazines, and writing letters to family and friends. She had a lifelong passion for watching baseball, rooting for her favorite teams, the Royals and Cubs, and enjoyed K-State basketball and football. &nbsp;Above all, she cherished spending time with her two grandsons and watching them grow.

Martha was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Russel Ashenfelter, who died November 22, 1969, her brother and sister-in-law, Raphael and Leilla Kubitschek, her sister and brother-in-law, Helen and Delmar Samsel, and her brother-in-law, Bob Branner.&nbsp;

She is survived by her loving daughter, Becky, and husband, Melvin Augustine, of Salina; two grandsons, Andrew Augustine and wife, Jackie, of Topeka, KS, Adam Augustine and wife, Lisa, of&nbsp; Bartlesville, Oklahoma, and two great grandchildren, Logan and Aubree Augustine, both of Bartlesville; sisters-in-law, Joan “Kay” Coffman and husband, John, and Jean “Fay” Branner, both of Timberville,Virginia; nieces, Vicki LaHay and husband, David, of Springfield, Missouri; Kay Williams and husband, Ron, of&nbsp; Bluffton, South Carolina; Kathy Fitzpatrick and husband, Bob, of Overland Park, Kansas, Michele Minnick and husband, Richard, of Harrisonburg, Virginia; Joni Biller and husband, Tony, of Timberville, Virginia; and Beth Branner-Gore and husband, Will, of Charlottesville, Virginia; nephews, Tom Samsel and wife, Joyce, of Springfield, Missouri; Dr. Kenneth Kubitschek and wife, Janice, of Asheville, North Carolina; as well as great-nieces and nephews and friends.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, February 22, 2025, at 10:30 AM at Salina Presbyterian Manor, 2601 E. Crawford, with Chaplain Dave Parker officiating. A luncheon will follow at Presbyterian Manor, with burial at Mount Calvary Cemetery, Salina.

Robert William Mermis, age 99, of Salina, Kansas, passed away peacefully on February 4, 2025.&nbsp; He was preceded in death by his wife of 72 years Violet Mermis on August 17, 2024. &nbsp;

Robert was born on October 28, 1925, in Walker, Kansas to John A. Mermis and Anna Kisner Mermis. He was a resident of Salina since 1954, having previously lived in McCook, Nebraska.&nbsp; Robert served honorably in the Army Air Corps as a Sergeant from December 1943 to May 1946.

Robert married Violet C. Klaus on June 18, 1952, in Severin, Kansas. He worked as a Sales Engineer at Frisbie Construction Co. in Gypsum, Kansas, for 26 years before retiring in 1992. His career also included employment at Simpson Evans &amp; Laybourn Grain Company.

He was an active member of the community, participating in organizations such as the Knights of Columbus, VFW, Municipal Senior Golf Association, and the Meals on Wheels program. Robert was a devoted member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church.

Robert is survived by sons, Michael Mermis of Watauga, Texas, and Greg Mermis of Kansas City, Missouri; daughters, Patricia Bluhm of Austin, Texas, and Marjorie Horton of Derby, Kansas; brothers, John Mermis of Saratoga, California; sisters, Remigia Quint of Grand Junction, Colorado, and Joan Von Feldt of Victoria, Kansas. He was preceded in death by his brother Clarence Mermis and sisters Irene Berens and Celesta Von Feldt.&nbsp; Robert was a proud grandfather to six grandchildren: Becky Quigley of Great Bend, Kansas, Chris Vroom of Decatur, Texas, Katie Horton of Wichita, Kansas, Beth Horton of Wichita, Kansas, Elke Mermis of Evergreen, Colorado, and Shae Mermis of Brooklyn, New York.

A Mass will be held at St. Mary’s Church on February 15 at 10:00 am, followed by interment at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Section #14. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary’s Building Fund.

Robert will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who knew him.

Donald “Don” Dean, age 76, passed away on Thursday, January 30, 2025 at Belleville Healthcare and Rehab, Belleville, KS.&nbsp;&nbsp;He was born on November 28, 1948 in Olney, IL to Robert Henry &amp; Eva A. (Mahan) Dean, Sr..

He graduated from Marion Harding High School in Marion, Ohio in 1966.&nbsp;&nbsp;He received a bachelor's degree in civil engineering from the University of Rolla in 1972.&nbsp;

He married Carol Sue Frye on December 26, 1971 at the Red Brush Christian Church in Louisville, IL. She passed away on Monday, February 3, 2025. He and Sue moved to Kansas in 1972 and lived in Garnett, KS and Chanute, KS.&nbsp;&nbsp;Don moved to Concordia in 1998 and Sue later joined him in 2004 after their son, Justin finished high school and community college.&nbsp;&nbsp;Don worked as a civil engineer for the State of Kansas and later Campbell &amp; Johnson when he came to Concordia.&nbsp;

He was a member of The Baptist Church, Concordia and later joined the First Christian Church, Concordia to attend church with his granddaughters. He was also a member of the Optimist Club, Boy Scouts of America, AWANAS, and The Cloud County Community Suppers.&nbsp;

Don is survived by his daughter, Kristin Sue Halfhide of Concordia, KS; daughter in law, Angela Decoster, Chanute, KS; grandchildren, Zachary Dean (Kayla), Mikaela Dean (Shane), Kaylee Halfhide and Aivree Halfhide; great grandchildren, Weston Dean and Adrian Halfhide-Sterling; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.&nbsp;

He was preceded in death by his sons, Travis Judd Dean &amp; Justin Dean; his parents; brother, Robert H. Dean, Jr., sisters, Carolyn Perkins, Gloria Dean &amp; Phyllis Gross.&nbsp;

Carol Sue Dean, age 75, passed away on Monday, February 3, 2025, at Belleville Healthcare and Rehab, Belleville, KS.&nbsp;&nbsp;She was born on January 16, 1950, in Flora, IL, to Gerald “Jud” and Betty L. (Dawkins) Frye.

She graduated from Louisville High School in Louisville, IL, in 1968.&nbsp;&nbsp;She received her undergraduate degree from Eastern Illinois University in mathematics and a minor in library science.&nbsp;&nbsp;She later received her master’s degree from Pittsburg State University.

She married Donald N. Dean on December 26, 1971, at the Red Brush Christian Church in Louisville, IL. He preceded her in death on January 30, 2025.&nbsp;She and Don lived in Garnett, KS and Chanute, KS, prior to them moving to Concordia, KS, in 2004.&nbsp;&nbsp;She worked as a librarian for USD 333 until her retirement.

She was a member of the AAUW in Garnett and Chanute, KS.&nbsp;&nbsp;Her passion was going to her children’s and grandchildren’s ball games and events.

Sue is survived by her daughter, Kristin Sue Halfhide of Concordia, KS; siblings, Jim Frye (Joyce), Apopka, FL, Scott Frye (Kim) Ocala, FL, Cathy Clark (Bud), The Villages, FL, and Nancy Kessler (Alan), IL; daughter-in-law, Angela Decoster, Chanute, KS; grandchildren, Zachary Dean (Kayla), Mikaela Dean (Shane), Kaylee Halfhide and Aivree Halfhide; great-grandchildren, Weston Dean and Adrian Halfhide-Sterling; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Robert “Bob” Eugene Williams,&nbsp;76,&nbsp;of Stockton, Kansas, passed away on February 3, 2025, at the Hays Medical Center in Hays, Kansas.&nbsp;He was born on July 17, 1948, to Karl and Quetona (Bird) Williams in Stockton, where he lived his entire life.&nbsp;

Bob married the love of his life, Nancy Atwill,&nbsp;on April 3, 1976,&nbsp;at the&nbsp;Assembly of God Church in Stockton. Their wedding was officiated by&nbsp;Nancy’s&nbsp;grandfather. Together, they raised two daughters,&nbsp;Brandy and Jessica.

Bob graduated from Stockton High School in 1966&nbsp;and&nbsp;briefly&nbsp;attended&nbsp;college&nbsp;before&nbsp;enlisting&nbsp;in the U.S. Marine Corps, where he proudly&nbsp;served&nbsp;in Vietnam. Following his military service,&nbsp;Bob&nbsp;spent time in Denver where he&nbsp;attended&nbsp;school to&nbsp;become a skilled&nbsp;meat&nbsp;cutter. He then&nbsp;pursued a lifelong career as a rural mail carrier, retiring after many years of dedicated service.&nbsp;

Alongside his professional work, Bob spent much of his life on his farm, raising cattle and hunting with his beloved bird dogs. He had a great love for nature, wildlife, and was known for his passion for training hunting dogs.&nbsp;Family gatherings were filled with laughter, and Bob could always be found either first or second in line for meals, often joining the kids' table during Christmas celebrations.

A true Kansas sports fan, Bob proudly supported the Kansas City Royals and the University of Kansas Jayhawks. He was a man of deep roots, having spent his life in the Stockton community, and his legacy of hard work, love for his family, and loyalty to his friends will always be remembered.

Bob is survived by his wife, Nancy of the home in Stockton; daughters, Brandy Williams of Denver, CO and Jessica (Steven II) Pinkerton of Kansas City, MO; brothers, Richard (Barbara) Williams of Stockton and Ronald (Jonita) Williams of Stockton; two grandchildren, Steven III and Olivia Pinkerton; and many nieces, nephews and great-nieces and&nbsp;nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Karl and Quetona; and his sister, Rhonda Kollman&nbsp;and husband Gary.

A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, February 10, 2025, at 11AM at the funeral home in Stockton. There will be no public visitation.

Aleda was an Assaria High School graduate and she attended Brown Mackie Business School. She also completed a program to receive a nursing certificate. During World War II, while her husband Philip was in the Air Force, Aleda did housework, washed windows, and worked at Bethany Home. She also did office work for Camp Phillips POW camp. She was active at church and in her family life, as well. Aleda was a member of Assaria Lutheran Church and WELCA. She was also a Boy Scout Room Mother and enjoyed all the time she spent with many church and family activities.

Aleda is survived her son: Philip Penn , Jr. (Kim) of Arizona; grandchildren: Amanda Penn, Travis Penn, Brett Siemsen, and Briana Zinni; great-grandchildren: Aahliya Penn, Arryona Penn, Paityn Beagle, Carson Zinni, and Beau Zinni; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband: Philip Penn Sr.; brothers: Delton and Levoy Carlson; and daughter-in-law: Vicky Penn.

Gary Lee Sutton, Culver, died Wednesday, February 5, 2025. He was born on the family farm near Bennington on September 14, 1938, to Wayne and Leota (Zuker) Sutton.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Gary graduated from Chapman High School in 1956. He and his family moved to Culver in 1958.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; He married Elouise M. Miller on October 28, 1961. To this union, their daughter, Anita Lynn was born December 8, 1965. She resides in Lindsborg.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Gary worked for the Motor Service Company in Salina from 1961-1984. From 1984 until his retirement in August of 2008, he was the route salesman for Long McArthur Ford in Salina. He joined the Kansas Army National Guard in 1960 and after 23 years he retired after a jeep accident.

Mark was born in Salina, Kansas on March 18, 1977, to Joleen (Farless) and John Kohman.

Mark graduated from Salina South High School in 1995, where he was active in drama. He enjoyed all the behind the scene aspects like lighting, sound, and set design. Mark worked at a variety of jobs over the years. The most recent and longest was a Schwan’s Pizza Plant in Salina.

Mark loved his niece, Penelope, very much and always said yes to playing all the board games whenever he came over. They both shared a love of Anime. Mark's lifelong dream was to visit Japan. He was even learning Japanese.

Survivors include his parents John and Joleen Kohman; sister, Angela Nieves (Hiram); niece, Penelope Nieves; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins.

He is preceded in death by infant niece, Isabela Nieves.

A celebration of life will be held at 1:00 PM on Friday, February 7th at Carlson-Geisendorf Funeral Home in Salina, Kansas.

Howard Eugene Lamer, age 85, of Salina, KS passed away Friday, January 31, 2025, after a long battle with dementia.

Howard was born in Salina, KS on February 12, 1939, to John and Aileen “Billie” Lamer. At the young age of 7, he started working at his father’s grocery store, Lamer’s Market, located at 709 E North St. Later, the store relocated to 145 N Phillips and Howard took over ownership when his father retired. Lamer’s Market was well known for their charge accounts and grocery delivery and was something that Howard had the utmost pride and joy in, making sure none of his customers ever went hungry. Customers to this day will share fond memories and funny stories they have of Howard and the store. Howard was known for his generosity and giving his customers many different nicknames throughout the years.

While working, Howard met Judy while she was shopping at the store. He offered to cook her dinner that night and the rest is history. Howard and Judy were married on October 7, 1973. During the 1970s, Howard also served as a Deputy for the Saline County Reserve Program. He and Judy continued working together at the store along with their five children until they retired and sold the store in 2002. Lamer’s Market was eventually turned into a house on Phillips St. During retirement, Howard and Judy bought a camper and sold roasted nuts at malls across the Midwest for about 7 years. They enjoyed their travels and meeting new people during that time.

Howard will be remembered for being goofy, cheating during intense games of Spoons at family gatherings, not knowing a stranger, having a pristine yard, instilling a strong work ethic in his children, making sure his loved ones had plenty of flashlights in case of an emergency, and doing anything he could to help those in need. He touched many people’s lives and left behind a true legacy.

He touched many people’s lives and left behind a true legacy.Howard is preceded in death by his parents, John, and Aileen “Billie” Lamer; two sisters, Norma Gerry, and Daisy “Darlene” Burke; one brother, John Lamer, who died at birth; and daughter in law, Lori Lamer.Howard is survived and missed by his loving wife, Judy Lamer, of 51 years; his two beloved dogs, Scarlett and Joey; his children Brad Lamer (Cindy), Brenda Buckley (Francis), Brian Lamer, Renee Nelson, and Toni Taggart (Scott); his eight grandchildren, Tami Keller (Kevin), Brett Lamer (Mallory), Melanie Perez (Chad), Jenny Buckley (fiancé Alex), Kelsi Unruh (Jarek), Casey Prester (Zach), Annie Stein (Cole), and Cooper Taggart; his twelve great grandchildren, Trever and Tysen Keller, Kirstin Adams (Collin) and Trenton Keller, Brecken and Britton Lamer, Mitchell and Reid Perez, Iylah and Wrenlee Unruh, and Baker and Beau Prester; and his one great great granddaughter, Bellemy Adams.A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, February 11, 2025, at Ryan Mortuary, 137 N 8th St in Salina, KS, 67401.In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Salina Emergency Aid/Food Bank​, The Salina Rescue Mission, or Journey Ventures to help those in need.
