Sister Jean Befort died July 23, 2025, at Nazareth Motherhouse in Concordia, KS.&nbsp;&nbsp;

She was 85 years old and a Sister of St. Joseph for 66 years.&nbsp;&nbsp;She was born in Hays, KS on July 23, 1940 to William and Leona Marie Pfannenstiel Befort, the oldest of five children, and was baptized Mary Rose.&nbsp;&nbsp;She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph, Concordia, Kansas on September 8, 1958.&nbsp;&nbsp;On August 18, 1959, Jean received the habit of the Sisters of St. Joseph and was given the name Sister Margaret Jean.&nbsp;&nbsp;She pronounced first vows on March 19, 1960 and final vows on March 19, 1963.

Sister Jean received a BS from Marymount College in 1968 in Psychology; a masters in Religious Education in 1975 from the University of St. Thomas, Houston, TX and a MA from Creighton University, Omaha, NE, in 1992 in Spirituality.&nbsp;&nbsp;For 21 years, in the Salina Diocese, Jean served in 10 parishes working with the religious education programs in the rural areas.&nbsp;&nbsp;In the years following, she served a four year term on the Community Leadership Team, served as staff member at Manna House of Prayer, and then began the Neighbor to Neighbor ministry beginning in 2009.&nbsp;&nbsp;She retired from this ministry in 2020 and moved to the Motherhouse.

Sister Jean was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Theresa Gottschalk.&nbsp;&nbsp;She is survived by one sister, Margaret Ann Hines; and two brothers, Donald and William.&nbsp;&nbsp;A Bible Vigil Service will be held August 4, 2025, at 6:30 p.m. in the Nazareth Motherhouse Chapel with Sister Marilyn Wall as the eulogist.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Mass of Christian Burial will be August 5, 2025 at 10:30 a.m. in the Motherhouse Chapel with Father Barry Brinkman presiding.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Sister Jean Befort

Rosalie (Rose) Catherine Gasper Maginness, age 87, passed away peacefully on July 22, 2025, at Salina Regional Health Center in Salina, Kansas. She was born on January 14, 1938, on her parents’ farm near Tipton in Mitchell County, Kansas, where she learned the values of hard work, family, and resilience that guided her throughout her life.

Rose married William Robert “Bill” Maginness, with whom she built a life and raised three daughters: Patricia Johnson of Wellington, Colorado; Pamela (Maurice) Pianalto of Wasilla, Alaska; and Paula (Stuart) Roegge of Concordia. Bill preceded her in death on August 7, 2005.

Rose dedicated 56 years of her life to working at the hospital in Concordia, with over 50 of those years spent in the radiology department. She served in multiple capacities and touched the lives of countless individuals in the community. Many came to know her through an X-ray, sonogram, or during cancer treatment. Her kind and gentle presence comforted patients in their most vulnerable moments, and her professionalism earned the respect of her colleagues and the gratitude of those she served.

After her retirement, Rose continued her service as a member of the Hospital Auxiliary. She was often seen pushing a cart through the halls or lending a hand behind the desk in the gift shop—always offering a smile and a quiet kindness to those she encountered.&nbsp;

Rose’s Catholic faith was always the center of her life. Once her children were grown, she devoted herself to serving her church in many ways. She spent time in Adoration, served on the Church Board, and was a Eucharistic minister who brought communion to the sick and elderly. Her quiet devotion and compassion were evident in all she did, both inside the church and out.

Rose took great pleasure in playing cards with her neighbors, passing many afternoons at the card table. She also played with family members when visiting, and was very competitive. Other hobbies were rosary making and sewing. Rose made many quilts that are treasures to those who knew her.&nbsp;

She was a proud grandmother to Alexandria Puderbaugh of Junction City, Catherine (Steven) Mills of Richmond, Virginia, Dusty (Anna) Pianalto of Wasilla, Alaska, Evan (Kealila) Johnson of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Maci Johnson of Wellington, Colorado, and Charles Roegge of Concordia. She was also blessed with four great-grandchildren: Catherine, Talitha, Aletheia, and James Pianalto, all of whom reside in Wasilla, Alaska.

Rosalie was preceded in death by her husband Bill Maginness, parents Edward and Alfreda Gasper, brother Eugene Gasper and sister Judy Gasper. Rose is survived by her daughters, six grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and her siblings: Edward (Dianne) Gasper of Victoria, Madonna Duffy of Tipton, Lee Gasper of Tipton, Alan Gasper of Marquette, Neal (Judy) Gasper of Tipton, Glennen (Patsy) Gasper of Wichita, Annette (Lyle) Muths of Tipton, and Regina (Bud) Bryant of Halstead, and many nieces and nephews.

Rose will be lovingly remembered for her calm spirit, unwavering patience, and deep care for others. Her life was a quiet testimony of faith, family, and selfless service.

Visitation will be held Sunday, July 27, 2025, from 1-8 p.m.

A Rosary/Vigil service will be held 6:00 p.m., Sunday, July 27, 2025, at the Chaput-Buoy Funeral Home, Concordia, Kansas led by Fr. Joseph Kieffer.&nbsp;&nbsp;The family will receive friends after the Rosary/Vigil Service.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on 10:00 a.m., Monday July 28, 2025, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, Concordia, Kansas with Fr. Joseph Kieffer officiating.&nbsp;&nbsp;Burial will follow in the Nelson Center Cemetery, rural Concordia.&nbsp;&nbsp;Family and friends will gather afterwards at the Church where a luncheon will be served.

Marvin Joseph “Lefty” Pfeifer, 94, of Salina, Kansas, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 23, 2025.

Born in Hays, Kansas, on July 20, 1931, Marvin was the son of Mary Seib Pfeifer and Frank Pfeifer.

Marvin spent over two decades working at Western Auto, where he was known for his dedication and friendly spirit.

Marvin found joy in the simple pleasures of life—fishing trips with his children, weekend garage sales with his beloved wife Carole, and sharing stories with anyone who would listen. He was rarely seen without a pocket full of strawberry candy, always ready to offer a sweet treat and a smile.He is survived by his son, Todd Pfeifer (Tresa) of Salina, Kansas; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Marvin was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Carole Pfeifer; his daughter, Joannie Plunkett; brothers George, Robert “Dudley,” Alfred “Al,” Francis Jr., and Eugene; and sisters Bernice Rhea and Velma Dreiling.In accordance with his wishes, cremation has been chosen. A graveside service will be held at Roselawn Cemetery in Salina, Kansas.

Melvin James Gabel, 84, of Salina, Kansas, passed away peacefully on July 18, 2025, surrounded by his family.

Melvin was born on May 22, 1941, in Hays, Kansas to Leo and Emma Gabel. He proudly served in the United States Navy, an experience that helped spark his lifelong love of travel and&nbsp;exploration. Whether it was a cross-country road trip or simply discovering a new backroad, Melvin was always up for an adventure—especially if there was a good map involved.

In 1964, he married Jeanette Dechant in Hays, Kansas. Together, they raised three children: Ursula, Cornel, and Jessica. Later in life, Melvin married Nancy Timmons in 2013. The couple made their home in Salina, where Melvin enjoyed retirement by planning travels, visiting family, and studying historical politics.

Melvin was a man of quiet curiosity, gentle humor, and kindness. He found joy in the simple things: the best fried egg sandwiches, perfectly folded laundry, and the company of family. His presence brought calm, and his stories left lasting impressions on those lucky enough to know him.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy; his children and their spouses: Ursula and Kevin Baird, Cornel and Donna Gabel, and Jessica and Ryan Cino; and his beloved grandchildren: Kiera and Max Gabel, and Gabe and Cooper Cino.

Mel’s adventurous spirit, big laugh, and love for life will be dearly missed.

A memorial service will be held at Brock’s-Keithley Funeral Chapel in Hays, KS, on Monday, July 28, 2025 at 10am.

Jerry “Pete” Jay Petersen, 77, of McPherson, KS, peacefully passed away on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, at the Robert J. Dole VA Medical Center, Wichita.&nbsp;

He was born on October 1, 1947, in Sioux City, IA, the son of Vern and Mary Etta (Higginbotham) Petersen.&nbsp; Pete graduated from Galva High School in 1966.

Pete was a United States Army veteran, serving in the Vietnam War.&nbsp; He was a member of the American Legion Post #24 and V.F.W. Post #2715.

Pete dedicated over 20 years of his life as a maintenance technician at Central Plastics, and spent the majority of his career working as an auto mechanic, a trade he was passionate about.&nbsp; He also served his community with pride and commitment as a volunteer firefighter for both the Galva Fire Department and the McPherson Fire Department.

He is survived by his two daughters, Barbara Petersen-Hurd (CW Hurd) of McPherson, KS and Rayleen Layfield (Todd) of Canton, KS; four grandchildren, Cassandra Rose (Nick), Joleta Petersen (Jeff Silhan), Jaidn Jay Petersen, and Daltn Layfield; one great-granddaughter, Skarlyt Petersen; siblings, Leroy “Butch” Petersen (Grace), Benny Petersen, and Karen Koehn, all of McPherson, KS; and many extended relatives and friends.

Pete was preceded in death by his parents; a brother &amp; sister-in-law, William “Bill” &amp; Mary Petersen; brother-in-law, Dave Koehn; nephews, Mark Koehn and Marty Koehn; and great-niece, Heidi Unruh.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM, Monday, July 28, 2025, at Stockham Family Funeral Home.&nbsp; The funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM, Tuesday, July 29, at New Hope Evangelical Church with Pastor George Bocox officiating.&nbsp; Burial with military honors will follow at McPherson Cemetery.&nbsp;

Royal Eugene Diers, 78, of McPherson, KS, passed away on Monday, July 21, 2025, surrounded by family at McPherson Hospital.

He was born on February 17, 1947, in Beloit, KS, the son of Adolph Walter and Lois Amelia (Davey) Diers.&nbsp; On May 10, 1969, Royal was united in marriage to Beverly Ann Chase in Charleston, SC.&nbsp; This union was blessed with two daughters, Lynette and Christina.

Royal served in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War and was a member of the American Legion.&nbsp; He was also a longtime member of Grace Lutheran Church.

He owned and operated his own auto repair shop, Diers Auto.

Survivors include his loving wife of 56 years, Beverly of the home; daughters, Lynette (Troy) Sovde of Galva, KS and Christina (Kevin) Klinkerman of Canton, KS; brother, Enos (Bonnie) Diers of Cawker City, KS; sister, Teresa Peterson of Asherville, KS; four grandchildren, Cole Sovde, Caleb (Katelynn) Sovde, Grace Klinkerman (Tayln Huff), and Chase (Madison) Klinkerman; two great-grandchildren, Norah Gene Sovde and Sky Royal Klinkerman; and many extended relatives and friends.

Royal Eugene Diers

James (Jim) Lee Farney, 82, of Salina, Kansas, passed into his eternal home on Friday, July 18, 2025. He was born on December 8, 1942 in Hutchinson, Kansas to Harvey and Viola (Kleck) Farney.

Jim was raised to love and serve the Lord and attended, with his family, the Sterling Mennonite Church. He accepted the Lord as his Savior at a revival meeting as a youth. He served faithfully on boards and committees in whatever church he was attending, and was a current member of First Covenant Church, Salina.

Jim attended Union 5 Grade School, rural Sterling and Nickerson High School, graduating in 1960. He graduated from Sterling College in 1964 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Education, and Emporia State University with a Master’s Degree in Physical Education in 1968. He taught school and coached for 15 years at various Kansas schools: North Reno, Hutchinson; Alma; Towanda; and Leon.

He loved sports, especially basketball and tennis, and played on the school teams in high school and college. His position as guard proved him to be a feisty player on the basketball court. After retirement, he enjoyed attending Kansas Wesleyan basketball and volleyball games. When he wasn’t playing on the court, he enjoyed watching any sport that was on television.

He married Donna Mehl in 1964. Two children, Jeffrey James and Darcy Lynn, were adopted into this union. He married LaVonne Anderson in 1983 and she survives.

In 1989, Jim was hired as the fifth employee at Kejr Engineering (now Geoprobe), Salina, working there for 21 years until his retirement in 2010.

He was raised on a farm and worked alongside his dad and brother (and uncles/cousins) with livestock and in the field. That love of farming continued throughout his lifetime.

Jim received the Gift of Extended Life on November 9, 2016 when he had a liver transplant. He was 73 at that time, and his donor was 80 years old! What an incredible gift!

Jim is survived by LaVonne, his wife of 42 years; his daughter Darcy (Doug Krier), Beloit; granddaughters Molly, Lawrence; and Joslynn, Beloit; brother, Robert Farney, Hutchinson, KS; sisters Donna Broadus, Hutchinson, KS, and Shirley Marlow, Aurora, CO; brother-in law Leland Anderson (Patsy), DeLand FL, nieces Diane Thompson (Gary), Gayle Fehr (Rick), Janet Marlow, Keva Farney, Debra Lemons (Tim), and Wendy Anderson, and nephews Jack Farney (Kay), Mark Broadus (Nancy Dye), and David Marlow (Nancy).

He was preceded in death by his son Jeff in 2023, his parents, nephew Tyler Farney, brothers-in-law Jerry Broadus, Robert Marlow, and sister-in-law Lavonne Farney.

Visitation will be Thursday July 24, 4-8 p.m. with family present from 6-8 p.m. at Ryan Mortuary, Salina. The burial will be Friday July 25, 9:30 a.m. at Mission Hill Cemetery, Rural Smolan followed by a memorial service at 11:00 a.m. at First Covenant Church, Salina. Pastor Tyler Henoch officiating. Donald Dale Ross

After a long illness, James “Jim” E. McClain, 89, of Minneapolis, KS passed away peacefully on July 20, 2025, at Cedarhurst Memory Care, Salina, KS. Jim was born on December 12, 1935, on the family farm near Gaylord, KS to Ernest and Fannie (Winters) McClain and graduated from Portis High School in 1953. After graduating Kansas Wesleyan University, Jim married Karen Wilson in November 1957 and started 67 years of marriage in Densmore, KS as a coach and teacher.

He continued his education at Fort Hays State during the summers and moved to Bennington, KS in 1962 to first serve as Principal of Bennington Public Schools, then following school unification in 1966 became Superintendent of USD 240, retiring in 1992.

Family and community were very important to Jim as he served on many boards and committees during his life including KSHSAA Executive Board. He was a member of the United Church of Bennington for over 60 years, was a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge, a long-term member of Bennington Lions club and many other community organizations. Jim was also a founding member of the all-volunteer Bennington Ambulance Service and served as a volunteer EMT and Director for over 30 years. He also was appointed multiple times to the Kansas Board of Emergency Medical Services.

Jim was known for his deep bass voice and enjoyed singing with many groups and choirs over the years.

He is survived by his wife Karen, of the home, brothers Ernest “Buck” (Helen) McClain of Hesston, KS and Jack (Edith) McClain of Gaylord, KS; his sons, Scott (Donatta) McClain of Salina, KS and Kelly (Michelle) McClain of Gilbert, AZ; his four grandchildren, Nolan (Hanna) McClain of Tucson, AZ, Brianna McClain of Anchorage, AK, Jordan (Annemarie) McClain of Costa Mesa, CA and Kyle McClain of Gilbert, AZ; great-granddaughters, Thalia and Felicity and many nieces and nephews.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Gwen “Punky” Nelson.

Larry Alan Usher, born February 27, 1933, in Salina, Kansas, passed away, Thursday, July 17, 2025, surrounded by family and love. He was the son of Ellis R. and Freida M. (Kilcoyne) Usher.

A proud graduate of Salina High School, Class of 1952, Larry went on to marry his high school sweetheart, Barbara M. Hayden, on October 16, 1954. Their union would span more than seven decades, filled with love, partnership, and shared adventure.

Larry and his brother Jim ushered in a new chapter in 1965, purchasing Ginder Hydraulic and Machine Shop from Ray Ginder. He worked with dedication and ingenuity until his retirement in 1994.

Never ones to sit still, Larry and Barbara joined Campers on Mission shortly before retiring. In their RV, they traveled widely, lending their skills and generous spirits to building and repairing churches and youth camps. Among the places closest to Larry’s heart were the Webster Conference Center in Salina, King Solomon’s Christian Camp in Solomon, and Weir Baptist Camp in Weir.

Larry had a deep love for working with wood and a knack for restoring clocks. He was a loyal NASCAR fan, a spirited game player among friends, and spent many cherished winters in Mesa, Arizona. His faith was a steady compass throughout life—he was a longtime member of Bel Air Baptist Church and later attended First Covenant Church, both in Salina.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 70 years, Barbara; his daughter, Connie Kvacik (Dan); son, Alan Usher (Amy); grandchildren, Matthew Kvacik (Kayla), Joe Kvacik, Sarah Nunemaker (Lucas), Ben Usher, and Alexandra Glover (Power); step-granddaughter, Kristin Cuddy; great-grandchildren, Nora and Lily Kvacik, and Hayden Kvacik, Gideon Nunemaker, Audrey Glover; brother, Jim Usher (Joan); and many other extended family members.Larry was preceded in death by his parents.

Larry Alan Usher

Judith (Judy) Ann Adam, passed away peacefully at her home in Tipton, Kansas, on July 19, 2025, after a long, courageous battle with cancer. She was born on December 20, 1950, in Beloit, Kansas. She was the cherished wife of Edward (Ed) Adam, whom she was united in marriage with on July 5, 1969.

Judy earned her high school diploma from Lebanon High School in 1969 and embarked on a diverse career journey. She worked various jobs, including owning and bartending at The Town Pump and providing in-home daycare. However, it was her time at Farmway COOP that defined much of her professional life. Judy spent many years there, first at the service station and later transferring to the elevator, from where she retired in 2016. Her work ethic and friendly demeanor left a lasting impression on all who knew her.

Judy was known for her easy-going personality, great sense of humor, and her willingness to lend a helping hand. Her love for family was evident in everything she did, particularly during the holidays, which she cherished as special times for gathering and creating lasting memories. Famous for her exceptional pie-baking skills, she delighted in sharing her creations with friends and loved ones.

Judy found joy in various hobbies and interests beyond her professional life. She took immense pleasure in watching her grandchildren participate in extracurricular and school activities, always cheering them on enthusiastically. Her leisure pursuits included cross-stitching, nurturing her garden, and the thrill of slot machines, which she enjoyed greatly.

Judy is survived by her loving husband, Edward Adam, of Tipton; her daughters Stephanie Walker of Wichita, Tammy Adam of Graham, Washington, and Kala Phillips, along with her son-in-law Joe Phillips, of Tipton. She was the cherished wife of Edward (Ed) Adam, whom she was united in marriage with on July 5, 1969.Judy earned her high school diploma from Lebanon High School in 1969 and embarked on a diverse career journey. She worked various jobs, including owning and bartending at The Town Pump and providing in-home daycare. However, it was her time at Farmway COOP that defined much of her professional life. Judy spent many years there, first at the service station and later transferring to the elevator, from where she retired in 2016. Her work ethic and friendly demeanor left a lasting impression on all who knew her.Judy was known for her easy-going personality, great sense of humor, and her willingness to lend a helping hand. Her love for family was evident in everything she did, particularly during the holidays, which she cherished as special times for gathering and creating lasting memories. Famous for her exceptional pie-baking skills, she delighted in sharing her creations with friends and loved ones.Judy found joy in various hobbies and interests beyond her professional life. She took immense pleasure in watching her grandchildren participate in extracurricular and school activities, always cheering them on enthusiastically. Judith (Judy) Ann Adam

Kenneth “Ken” Alfred Dechant, 73, of Salina, Kansas, passed away on July 15th, 2025, at Smoky Hill Health &amp; Rehabilitation. Born on April 14th, 1952, in Hays, Kansas, the son of Alfred “Fritz” W. Dechant and Dorothy (Honas) Dechant.

Ken graduated from St. Joseph’s Military Academy in 1970, then joined the Army Reserves in 1971. He was stationed at the 388th Medical Battalion in Hays, Kansas, and served there until he was honorably discharged in March of 1977. He then went on to receive his associate’s degree in accounting and business administration/management from Brown Mackie College in 1991.

On July 8th, 1972, Ken married the love of his life, Judy Ann Werth. Fr. Steve Letourneau united them in marriage at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Hays, Kansas. Their union was a celebration of love and dedication that prospered over the next 53 years.

Ken worked as a grocery manager at Dillons in Great Bend, Kansas for 10 years. After moving to Salina, he worked 9 years as the safety coordinator at Dillons. He then went on to work for Kansas Highway Patrol Troop C as a Communications Specialist II, retiring in September of 2014.

On any given day of the week, you could find Ken watching the KC Chiefs, KC Royals, or Gunsmoke. He also enjoyed playing card games with family and friends, such as pitch or pinochle. His favorite pastime of all was watching his children and grandchildren's sports games, band concerts, Special Olympics bowling, and various other activities. Rain or shine, he would be in the crowd cheering for his family at every event.

He was a member of St. Mary Queen of the Universe Parish in Salina, Kansas.

Ken was preceded in death by his father Alfred “Fritz” W. Dechant, younger sister Joyce D. Dechant, and nephew Wade M. Dreiling.

Remaining to cherish Ken's memory are his wife Judy, his mother Dorothy Dechant; &nbsp;Sisters: Linda Rohr (Allen), Janice Prater, and Marybeth Dreiling (Bruce); Children: Ryan Dechant (Courtney), Tara Dechant, Erica Dechant, and Adam Dechant (Chaneil); Grandchildren: Ashlyn, Ariel, Skylar, Cooper, Finley, and Kaidyn Dechant; and many more nieces, nephews, and relatives.

Visitation will be held at St. Mary Queen of the Universe on Thursday, July 24th from 6:00 to 8:00 pm, located at 230 E Cloud St. Salina, KS 67401.

A funeral mass will be held at 10:00 am on Friday, July 25th at St. Mary’s, with Fr. Kevin Weber officiating. An Inurnment ceremony will be held immediately after at All Saints Catholic

Cemetery, located at 3350 E Crawford St. Salina, KS 67401.

Jerome Koester Johnson, age 92, of Concordia, KS, passed away on Wednesday, July 16, 2025, with his family by his side at the Salina Regional Health Center, Salina, Kansas. He was born on November 28, 1932, in the Nelson Township area of rural Concordia, Kansas to Charles D. and Mary L. (Mayme Koester) Johnson.

He graduated from Concordia High School in May of 1950. He married Joan Hoover on September 16, 1956, at the Presbyterian Church in Concordia, KS. From this union, Deanna, Kenneth, Brenda, and Rhonda were born.

Jerome was a proud veteran. He served in the United States Army from 1953 – 1955. After completing high-speed radio operator school at Camp Gordon, Georgia, he shipped out to Erlangen, West Germany, where he served in the 48th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Battalion (Self-Propelled). This was during the Cold War and the unit spent much of its time near the border with Czechoslovakia. For his service, he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the Army of Occupation Medal (Germany), and the Good Conduct Medal. After returning to the United States in 1955, he was honorably discharged at the rank of Corporal.

He was a member of the Huscher United Methodist Church, American Legion Post #76, V.F.W., Masonic Lodge at St. John’s Lodge #113, Concordia Chapter #45, Concordia Commandry #42, Hiram Council #10, 32nd Degree Scottish Rite of Freemasonry and ISIS Shrine.

Jerome farmed in the Huscher area. He loved farming, enjoyed owning and operating Johnson Electronics and talking on his Ham Radio. Jerome was happiest while spending time with wife Joan, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Jerome is survived by his children: Deanna Leon (Stuart), Surprise, AZ; Kenneth Johnson, Concordia, KS; Brenda Johnson (Michael), Salina, KS; and Rhonda Ailslieger (Kristafer), Topeka, KS; grandchildren Joshua Leon (Susan), Sarah Kilpatrick (Troy), Stacy Duis (Jeremy), Michelle McKittrick (Jake), Katie Whitley (Levi), Emily Black (Colton), Ryan Johnson, Megan Johnson, Lauren Ailslieger, Morgan Ailslieger, Braden Ailslieger and 20 great grandchildren.&nbsp;

Wilfred John Vargas, 101, passed away on July 14, 2025, at Bethany Home in Lindsborg, KS. He was born on November 6, 1923, to Benjamin and Paula (Ramirez) Vargas.

Wilfred became an orphan at the age of 9 and was placed, along with his brother Alfred, in the St. Joseph Orphanage in Abilene, KS. The brothers attended school in Abilene.

He joined the United States Marine Corps and served during World War II in the Pacific, as well as in the Korean War. After his military service, Wilfred held numerous jobs, including work as a plumber and carpenter. He was also employed in the electrical field, lead wiring, and sheet metal work; worked as a machinist at an aircraft manufacturing plant; and later worked for the Union Pacific Railroad.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Sarah Cordero, Josephine Sanchez, Hope Rojas, and Francis Vargas; and brothers, Rudolph, Alfred, and Gregorio.

Although Wilfred never had children of his own, he had many nieces and nephews who were very dear to him.

A private graveside service will be held at a later date.

The family would like to thank Bethany Home and Interim Hospice for their compassionate and professional care.

John Richard Turner&nbsp;(JT), 81, of McPherson, Kansas, and formerly of Glendale, Arizona, passed away peacefully at noon on July 16, 2025, with his loving wife by his side.

John was born on January 1, 1944, in Wichita, Kansas, the second son of Elbert S. and June F. (LaMar) Turner. John grew up in Alden, Hutchinson, and McPherson, Kansas where he graduated from McPherson High School, Class of 1962.&nbsp; John graduated as Safety Club President.&nbsp; On August 23, 1985, John was united in marriage to Sandy Bergman in Phoenix, Arizona.

John retired from the automotive industry after 43 years and continued working another seven years at both Home Depot in Phoenix, AZ and Lowes in Kansas City, MO.&nbsp;

He is survived by his older brother, Gary (Susie) Turner of Shawnee Mission, KS; his loving wife of nearly 40 years, Sandy Turner of the home; his children, Terri (Mike) Lacy of McPherson, KS, John W. Turner of Oklahoma, and Jim (Diane) Turner of Noblesville, IN; his four grandchildren, Shelby (Christopher) Neilson of Manhattan, KS, who are expecting a baby in August; Jenna (Blake) Bowman of Manhattan, KS, and their children, Bennett and Avery; and Ashlynn Turner and Adyson Turner, both of Noblesville, IN; and many extended relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Elbert Turner and June Turner-Frick; brother, Phillip D. Turner; and son-in-law, Marty Crampton.

John will be laid to rest in McPherson Cemetery with a graveside service at a future date to be announced.

Janeth Kay Burch, 78, of Salina, Kansas, passed away on Thursday, July 10, 2025.

Born in Salina on May 31, 1947, Janeth was the daughter of Hermenia L. (Younger) and John G. Waldschmidt. She remained deeply rooted in her hometown, where she built a life centered around family and compassion.

Janeth is survived by her three children, Nicole Burch of Salina, Rebecca Burch of Wichita, and Christopher Burch (Christina) of Salina. Her legacy continues through nine grandchildren—Patricia Carney, Brandon Burch, Cheyenne Phillippe (Larry), Tanner Martindale, Justin Burch, Gage Burch, Chase Martindale, Ephram Martindale, and Trinity Burch—as well as two great-grandchildren, Rory and Andrew, with one more on the way.

She is also survived by her sister, Bernita Powell of Danville, Virginia.Janeth was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Chuck Byer; and siblings Herbert Waldschmidt, John Waldschmidt Jr., Bernard Waldschmidt, Melvin Waldschmidt, Donald Waldschmidt, and Leveda Peters.

In keeping with her wishes, cremation has been chosen. Graveside services will be held at 10:00 am, Friday, July 25, 2025 at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Salina.

Sandra Lee McCord, age 82, passed away on Monday July 14, 2025, at the Osborne County Memorial Hospital in Osborne, KS.

She was born the daughter of Charles Riedi &amp; Alice Schepple in Dubuque, IA on May 1, 1943.

Sandie graduated from Dubuque High School in the 1961 class. She married Gerald McCord in 1975.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Gerald; in laws Don &amp; Mildred McCord’ maternal grandparents Frank &amp; Celia Schepple; her fraternal grandparents Martin &amp; Bertha Riedi.

Merlin Duane “Pete” Peterson, 94, Minneapolis, was born June 3, 1931, in Tescott, to Christian Oswald and Nora Rebecca (Werries) Peterson. He died July 14, 2025, in Salina surrounded by family.

Pete served in the Air Force from 1951-1953 during the Korean War. He and Eva Mae Bradbury were married on September 4, 1954, in Ada. He worked for the United States Postal Service as a rural mail carrier and at Eldorado Motor Corporation.

Pete was passionate about cars and flying airplanes. A highlight from later years in life was his 90th birthday lunch/celebration/flight at Stearman Field in Benton.

Pete was preceded in death his parents; wife, Eva; two brothers, Lloyd and Melburn; and an infant sister.

He is survived by three daughters, Lu Ann Stewart and husband, Greg, Jacque Havice and husband, George, and Lisa Parker; 11 grandchildren, Kimberley (Chad) Abresch, Stephanie (Andrew) Pedersen, Preston (Carissa) Stewart, Sierra Stewart, Madeleine Stewart (Robert Duff), Jodi (Karl) DeArmond, Jenny (Kyle) Weiser, Jessica (Taylor) Hess, Lindsey (Seth) Rohde, Alex Parker, and Kaleigh (Devin) Knox; 18 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Graveside services with military honors will be at 10:00 A.M., Monday, July 21, at Highland Cemetery, Minneapolis.
