The Salina Area United Way (SAUW) is now accepting grant proposals for the 2020 Make A Difference Grant funding cycle.  

"We are excited to announce we will be awarding $75,000 in Make A Difference Grants this year," noted Claire Mullen, SAUW executive director.

The purpose of the Make A Difference grant is to be responsive to community needs.  Consideration will be given to programs that make a difference in the communities. The Salina Area United Way fights for the health, education and financial stability of every person in every community.

All 501(c)(3) charitable organization or government/public or educational institution or church or other organizations in the Salina Area United Way 10 county service area (Saline, Ottawa, Cloud, Republic, Jewell, Mitchell, Lincoln, Ellsworth, Russell, Osborne) that provide programs with measurable impact in one of SAUW's three locally determined focus areas, are eligible to apply for funding. The 2020 Make A Difference Grant application is available on the website at https://www.unitedwaysalina.org/2020MakeADifference or may be obtained by calling 785-827-1312 or emailing info@unitedwaysalina.org.

SAUW now accepting applications for Make A Difference grants

The Saline County Sheriff's Office is investigating the theft of an 18-foot trailer from a rural property east of Salina.

Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said this morning that a 2004 black, 18-foot H&amp;H tilt-bed trailer with a wooden deck was stolen from the 1800 block of South Cunningham Road sometime within the past 12 months. The owner, who lives out of town, told deputies that the trailer was discovered missing several months ago but the theft was only just recently reported because it was originally believed that another family member had the trailer, Soldan said. 

The trailer, valued at $1,900, has a Kansas license tag of XCJ 590, he said.

Sheriff's office seeks info about trailer stolen from east of Salina

Salina Police were called to the intersection of North Ninth Street and West North Street Sunday morning for the report of a man passed out in a vehicle at the railroad tracks.

When officers arrived shortly before 8:30 a.m., the driver, Terrius Jones, 30, of Wichita, appeared to be passed out behind the steering wheel of a green 2000 Mercury Sable, Salina Police Captain Gary Hanus said this morning. 

The person who reported the incident told police that the Sable and other vehicles were stopped at the tracks for a train moving through, but when the train cleared and traffic was allowed to resume, the Sable didn't move, Hanus said.

A K-9 was brought in and indicated on the vehicle for illegal drugs, prompting a search of the vehicle, according to Hanus. During the search, a used drug smoking device was found, and it later tested positive for methamphetamine, he said.

After officers were able to wake up Jones, he was arrested on suspicion of the following, Hanus said.

Police respond to report of man passed out in car at railroad tracks

A Salina man was arrested after a chase through parts of south Salina, Saline County, and McPherson County Saturday night.

Salina Police Captain Gary Hanus said this morning that a patrol officer observed a gray 2015 Honda Civic driving without tail lights at approximately 10:40 p.m. Saturday in the 200 block of North Broadway Boulevard. When the officer attempted to stop the vehicle, it took off southbound and led police on a chase through the south part of Salina before getting on southbound Interstate 135 (I-135, Hanus said.

Once the vehicle was on I-135, Saline County Sheriff's deputies and Kansas Highway Patrol troopers took over the chase, he said. The vehicle eventually stopped because troopers put out spike strips in McPherson County, Hanus said.

The driver, Mason Barnes, 19, of Salina, was arrested on suspicion of the following, Hanus said.

Teen arrested after chase from Salina into McPherson County

OKALOOSA COUNTY, FL. — Authorities are working to determine the cause of Sunday plane crash in the panhandle of Florida.

The pilot and passenger aboard a Beech Bonanza aircraft that went down short of the Destin Executive Airport runway Sunday morning in are identified as a father and son from Kansas who were flying into the Destin area for vacation, according to a media release from the Okaloosa County Sheriff's office.

&nbsp;Just after 10a.m., Jason Dougherty, 47, of Garden City and Caleb Dougherty, 22, Salina, as well as a Labrador retriever flying with them, somehow survived without a scratch after just missing a home and landing in a tree in&nbsp;the area of Main Street and Planet Drive&nbsp;

They say the plane began experiencing engine trouble as they were coming into land, according to the sheriff's office.

The National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the accident.

HAYS – Lilly Duncan and Ethan Couture are two of several current college students who have benefitted from participating in field camps through Fort Hays State University’s&nbsp;Sternberg&nbsp;Museum of Natural History since 2014.

The renowned museum in Western Kansas this year is adding another step to keep students connected to the earth and life sciences during high school and beyond.

The list of nine&nbsp;Sternberg&nbsp;camps for high school students now includes two sessions on comparative vertebrate anatomy, which is a two-week intensive short course for students interested in biology. The first of two sessions will be held at&nbsp;Sternberg&nbsp;Museum and FHSU beginning June 21, and the other at the University of Oregon, set to begin on July 26.

Sternberg&nbsp;administrators hope this camp draws some students to Fort Hays State as one did for Duncan. She grew up near Wilson State Park and spent a lot of time outdoors as a youngster. She said she was interested in FHSU during high school, but “it sealed the deal” after she attended a&nbsp;Sternberg&nbsp;field camp. A freshman biology major, Duncan works for&nbsp;Sternberg&nbsp;and will be a teaching assistant for the Prairie Natural middle school camps this summer.

Couture also is a freshman biology major, at the University of Maine, near where his family now lives. He attended a variety of&nbsp;Sternberg&nbsp;camps since he was in middle school in Junction City when his father was in the military and stationed at Fort Riley. He will be back in Kansas this summer as a counselor for the comparative vertebrate anatomy camp at the FHSU site and is looking forward to learning right along with the students.

“Sternberg&nbsp;camps make you think and go beyond what’s given to you, so what I learned at camp really helped me in high school,” Couture said. “It’s definitely given me an edge in college, and I’m excited to be a part of this particular camp in its first year.”

Couture stressed that students also take away other valuable lessons from&nbsp;Sternberg&nbsp;camps. He was the only person he knew while growing up who was interested in paleontology or science in general. Attending Sternerg camps helped boost his confidence to continue following his interests.

“I no longer felt alone in my passion,” he said. “To this day, the friendships I made at the camps are some of my best.”

David Levering, camp director, listened to past participants who asked for an anatomy camp. He selected third-year camp instructor Catherine Sartin, a faculty member in biological sciences at FHSU, as the instructor for the comparative vertebrate anatomy camps, which have 10 slots available for each session.

The camp is open to students interested in a variety of life science fields, ranging from paleontology to&nbsp;human and veterinary medicine. Students will learn&nbsp;how to apply natural history concepts to other medical fields, how structures work together in humans as well as animals and how they are similar but different at the same time, and how natural history concepts can inform medical science.

“I’m not limited in scope by sticking to a strict biology box,” Sartin said. “Being a paleontologist, I find that the basis for understanding an animal and anything that it does can be found in its skeleton. The sooner we start learning those basic building blocks, the easier it is to build the rest of the knowledge around that.”

With a background in medical biology from Johns Hopkins University, Sarti is excited to introduce students to the full extent of vertebrate organs and structures.

Students&nbsp;will learn about the body tissues of the animals, how bone structures evolved and even a little about geology in the fossil record of modern vertebrates.

“Part of our mission is to teach that these areas of science aren’t islands,” Levering said. “They interface with others. This is a great way to&nbsp;apply natural history concepts to other biomedical fields.”

Because of the rigor of anatomy and physiology courses, Levering thinks any prior exposure to that content before college is beneficial. At camp, this prior exposure is also made actively engaging and fun.

“We are creating opportunities for students to explore the field and lab sciences when students still have time to choose what they want to study in college,” said Dr. Reese Barrick, director of the museum.

“These camps create opportunities students wouldn’t get until well into their college careers,” he said. “It’s a huge thing to hold their interest in science during that transitional period, and we are able to ground their interest in science through&nbsp;Sternberg&nbsp;programs.”

Sternberg adds comparative vertebrate anatomy camp

The City of Salina has announced another round of street crack sealing.

Monday through Friday, Circle
C Construction of Goddard will continue sealing cracks on the following City
of Salina streets, weather permitting:

Residents will be asked
to remove their cars from streets to facilitate the work, which will take place
generally between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Access to properties within
work zones will be maintained at all times. “Road Work Ahead” signs will be
placed in advance of work zones, and temporary single-lane closures are to be
expected. Motorists are asked to proceed with caution when approaching work
zones for the safety of the crews performing the work. 

The annual crack and
joint sealing program is an important and cost-effective preventive maintenance
component of the City of Salina’s annual street repair program. Crack sealing
the pavement helps prevent water from penetrating into the pavement structure
or sub-base material and aids in reducing a number of pavement problems which
include: crack spreading; formation of voids under pavement; swelling and
shrinking of sub-base materials; freeze-thaw action; alligator cracking; potholing;
and complete failure. Because of its importance and cost- effectiveness, the
Department of Public Works strives to seal each asphalt street in Salina no
less often than every seven years. Approximately 20 centerline miles of streets
will be sealed in 2020.

The $259,000 project is
a major component of the City of Salina’s $5.4 million 2020 maintenance capital
improvement program.

According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, rainfall amounts will generally be a half inch or less, though locally higher amounts to near one inch will be possible.

The Salina Symphony will present an afternoon of Rodgers &amp; Hammerstein at the Stiefel Theatre later this month.

The concert, under the baton of Dr. David Littrell, interim music director and conductor, is scheduled for 4 p.m. March 22, in the Stiefel Theatre, 151 South Santa Fe Avenue.

Tickets may be purchased at the Stiefel Theatre box office, by calling 785-827-1998, or online at www.salinasymphony.org. Single admission is $29/$39 and $20 for students/children ages five and up. 

The orchestra, along with guest vocalists and choruses, will present songs from The Sound of Music, Oklahoma!, The King &amp; I, Carousel, South Pacific, and State Fair.

The symphony will be joined by Amy Rosine, soprano; Janie Brokenicky, soprano; Patricia Thompson, mezzo-soprano; Reginald Pittman, tenor; Bryan Pinkall, tenor; and Drew Horton, baritone.

“We’re featuring five fabulous soloists from the K-State vocal faculty as well as the Wamego High School choir director,” said Littrell. “I’ve had the honor of collaborating with these artists in the past, and Salina is in for a treat hearing them perform these beloved songs by Rodgers and Hammerstein.”

The concert will also feature the Salina Chorale, Kansas Wesleyan University Choral, and Salina South High School’s New Dawn Singers.

A fire weather watch means that critical fire weather conditions are forecast to occur.

NWS in Wichita has issued a fire weather watch in effect from noon through this evening for the following counties in our area.

Winds: South 25 to 30 mph with gusts up to approximately 40 mph.

Impacts: Any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly and become very difficult to control. Outdoor burning is not recommended.

NWS is Topeka has issued a fire weather watch in effect from 10 a.m. through this evening for the following counties in our area.

WIND: South winds of 20 to 30 MPH with gusts up to 45 MPH.

HUMIDITY: Minimum relative humidity values of 30 to 35 percent in the afternoon.

HIGHEST THREAT: The very strong winds along with critical fuels   could create very high fire danger even though relative humidity is expected to increase today.

IMPACTS: Any fires that develop could spread rapidly. Outdoor   burning is not recommended.

UPDATE: Fire weather watches, wind advisories issued

Unsung heroes. They can take many forms, from a hard-working single parent to an inspirational teacher to your local firefighter or police officer. Today we’ll learn about a Kansas-based educational center which is seeking to share examples of unsung heroes so as to improve our communities and our world.

Last week we met Norm Conard, a long-time social studies teacher at Uniontown High School. His students did many award-winning history projects through the years, one of which was a play about Irena Sendler. Sendler was a Polish social worker who rescued 2,500 Jewish children from the Nazis during World War II.&nbsp;&nbsp;After the communists overtook Poland, they suppressed her story for another 45 years before Mr. Conard’s students became aware of it.

Three of Mr. Conard’s high school students did a play for National History Day about Irena Sendler. Eventually her story gained national recognition. The unsung heroism of this woman became known to a grateful world.

Having seen the transformative power of this work, Norm Conard thought about how to create more impact. During his teaching career, he was a USA Today All-American Teacher, Kansan of the Year, member of the National Teachers Hall of Fame, and recipient of many other honors.

As he sought to enhance education using these stories of unsung heroes, he developed a grant proposal to the Milken Family Foundation to create an educational center based on this idea. Not only was the grant ultimately approved, Norm retired from teaching to become the center’s executive director.

Today the Lowell Milken Center for Unsung Heroes is located in Fort Scott, Kansas. Its mission is to “transform&nbsp;classrooms and communities through student-driven projects that discover unsung heroes from history and teach the power of one to create positive change.”

The center works with students and educators to develop history projects that highlight role models demonstrating courage, compassion and respect. “It is project-based learning, which allows the students to take ownership,” Norm said.

The Lowell Milken Center for Unsung Heroes provides tools, resources and ongoing support for students and educators who are engaged in the development of Unsung Heroes projects. Project participants conduct primary research and interviews to discover and develop an Unsung Hero’s story through an interactive learning process that cultivates critical-thinking, problem-solving and leadership skills. They then create ways to share the story, including student-driven plays, documentary films, websites, museum exhibits and more.

“We present the stories of unsung heroes in history who have made an impact,” Norm Conard said. The museum’s Hall of Unsung Heroes features these stories, one of which is about Irena Sendler herself. “The impact of the Irena Sendler story is world-wide,” Norm said.

“We’ve become a repository of these great stories of people who you might not have heard of,” he said. The center has developed books and school curricula about unsung heroes. The center sponsors national competitions for historic unsung heroes’ presentations with cash prizes totaling $14,000 for students.&nbsp;&nbsp;Each year, the center also sponsors an LMC Fellows program through which educators nationwide are selected for high-level professional development.

Ultimately, the goal of these projects is to help create lasting change in attitudes and behaviors within classrooms, schools and communities across the U.S. and throughout the world.

“A trip to the center is a `wow’ experience,” Norm said. “Last year we had record attendance of 12,000 people.” Visitors have come from all 50 states and 100 countries.

One of Norm’s co-workers, program director Megan Felt, was one of those three high school girls who wrote that original play and began this remarkable movement in support of Irena Sendler. Megan came from the nearby rural community of Bronson, population 323 people. Now, that’s rural.

 </figure>By RON WILSON Kansas State UniversityUnsung heroes. They can take many forms, from a hard-working single parent to an inspirational teacher to your local firefighter or police officer. Today we’ll learn about a Kansas-based educational center which is seeking to share examples of unsung heroes so as to improve our communities and our world.Last week we met Norm Conard, a long-time social studies teacher at Uniontown High School. His students did many award-winning history projects through the years, one of which was a play about Irena Sendler. Sendler was a Polish social worker who rescued 2,500 Jewish children from the Nazis during World War II.&nbsp;&nbsp;After the communists overtook Poland, they suppressed her story for another 45 years before Mr. Conard’s students became aware of it.Three of Mr. Conard’s high school students did a play for National History Day about Irena Sendler. Eventually her story gained national recognition. The unsung heroism of this woman became known to a grateful world.Having seen the transformative power of this work, Norm Conard thought about how to create more impact. During his teaching career, he was a USA Today All-American Teacher, Kansan of the Year, member of the National Teachers Hall of Fame, and recipient of many other honors.As he sought to enhance education using these stories of unsung heroes, he developed a grant proposal to the Milken Family Foundation to create an educational center based on this idea. Not only was the grant ultimately approved, Norm retired from teaching to become the center’s executive director.Today the Lowell Milken Center for Unsung Heroes is located in Fort Scott, Kansas. Its mission is to “transform&nbsp;classrooms and communities through student-driven projects that discover unsung heroes from history and teach the power of one to create positive change.”The center works with students and educators to develop history projects that highlight role models demonstrating courage, compassion and respect. “It is project-based learning, which allows the students to take ownership,” Norm said.The Lowell Milken Center for Unsung Heroes provides tools, resources and ongoing support for students and educators who are engaged in the development of Unsung Heroes projects. Project participants conduct primary research and interviews to discover and develop an Unsung Hero’s story through an interactive learning process that cultivates critical-thinking, problem-solving and leadership skills. They then create ways to share the story, including student-driven plays, documentary films, websites, museum exhibits and more.“We present the stories of unsung heroes in history who have made an impact,” Norm Conard said. The museum’s Hall of Unsung Heroes features these stories, one of which is about Irena Sendler herself. “The impact of the Irena Sendler story is world-wide,” Norm said.“We’ve become a repository of these great stories of people who you might not have heard of,” he said. The center has developed books and school curricula about unsung heroes. The center sponsors national competitions for historic unsung heroes’ presentations with cash prizes totaling $14,000 for students.&nbsp;&nbsp;Each year, the center also sponsors an LMC Fellows program through which educators nationwide are selected for high-level professional development.Ultimately, the goal of these projects is to help create lasting change in attitudes and behaviors within classrooms, schools and communities across the U.S. and throughout the world.“A trip to the center is a `wow’ experience,” Norm said. “Last year we had record attendance of 12,000 people.” Visitors have come from all 50 states and 100 countries.One of Norm’s co-workers, program director Megan Felt, was one of those three high school girls who wrote that original play and began this remarkable movement in support of Irena Sendler. Megan came from the nearby rural community of Bronson, population 323 people. MCPHERSON COUNTY —One person was injured in an accident just before 10:30 p.m. Saturday in McPherson County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2002 Ford F150 driven by Daniel I. Gaylor, 53, Little River, was northbound on Interstate 135 five miles south of McPherson.

The pickup was rear-ended by a 2016 Hyundai Sonata driven by Tyus J. Price, 24, Wichita.&nbsp;

EMS transported a passenger in the pickup Dana C. Clifford, 48, Little River, to the hospital in McPherson. Gaylor and Price were not injured.

All three were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

Salina South students tour CCCC departments

LINDSBORG -- Bethany Lutheran Church soon will have a new pastor.

The church has announced that Rev. Christopher Deines has accepted the call to serve the church. The Deines family is scheduled to arrive in Lindsborg sometime in mid-March and Deines’ first Sunday serving the church will be Easter Sunday, April 12.

Deines and his wife, Chelsea, are both graduates of Bethany College, classes of 2007 and 2006 respectively. They have three children aged 9, 7, and 2. Deines, ordained in 2012, graduated from Wartburg Seminary in Dubuque, Iowa. He comes to Lindsborg from a two-point ELCA parish in southwest Missouri, which he has been serving for about the last eight years.

“It is with great joy that we have been called to walk with one another in ministry. I am excited to build relationships with God’s children and to move into the future guided by the love and grace of God,” said Deines.

A new Salina League of Women Voters program emphasizing increased voter turnout is the topic for the organization's upcoming Lunch and Learn Program.

Members and non-members will meet 12:15 p.m. Tuesday in the Prescott Room of Salina Public Library, 301 West Elm Street, to discuss SalinaVotes.

League members will discuss ways to increase voter turnout with proven methods. Get voter registration training and learn about online tools such as <a href="http://VoterToVoter.org">VoterToVoter.org</a> and <a href="http://MapTheVote.org">MapTheVote.org</a>.

Funding for this months-long project comes from the Greater Salina Community Foundation, YWCA Legacy Fund, and UUVotes. Assisting in the work is the LWVK, NAACP, Salina Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, and others.

The program is open to all. The league will provide refreshments.
