Area students receive honors from Concordia University

Little Caesars love kitchen is making a stop in Salina this week. 

The Love Kitchen is an 18-wheeler that travels the country to help feed the hungry, respond to natural disasters, etc.

It will be located in the parking lot off of South Ninth Street behind Ashby House at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday to provide free pizza to those in need.

The local Little Caesars franchise will be supplying the food and workers for the event as a way to give back to the community for the franchise's 10th anniversary, according to franchise owner Tom Perrin.

MANHATTAN –&nbsp;Kansas State University’s 2020 Swine Profitability Conference is planned for Feb. 4 at the Stanley Stout Center in Manhattan.

Each year, the Swine Profitability Conference focuses on the business side of pork production.

“We will be discussing important swine business topics of risk management, pork demand, value-added production, and biosecurity,” said Mike Tokach, University Distinguished Professor in the Department of Animal Sciences and Industry, and swine extension specialist. “This conference is designed for producers to increase their competitiveness in today’s swine industry.”

The conference will feature speakers from many swine-related businesses and organizations, including:

Bob Taubert, managing partner at New Horizon Farms, will address the approach to risk management.

Joe Kerns, Kerns and Associates, will discuss the world meat dynamics and US pork price outlook for 2020.

Kaden and Emily Roush, R Family Farms, will share their story of raising pigs in north central Kansas.&nbsp;

Daniel Linhares, Iowa State University, will talk about ways to prevent, control and eliminate swine infectious diseases.

Steve Dritz, Kansas State University, will focus on the past, present and future of bio-security.&nbsp;

“We believe the speakers for the 31st annual profitability conference are industry leaders with diverse backgrounds and understanding of the swine industry,” said Joel DeRouchey, K-State Research and Extension swine specialist. “They will provide take-home information for swine producers and allied industry partners alike.”

The Stanley Stout Center is located at 2200 Denison Avenue, north of the K-State campus. The day begins with coffee and donuts at 9:15 a.m. and the program starting at 9:30 a.m. Lunch is included in the conference, which will end at 3 p.m.

K-State Swine Profitability Conference set for Feb. 4 

An exciting event is coming to Salina Feb. 4-8, as “Fusion!: KWU Festival of Music,” is held at locations throughout the city. 

All events are open to the public at no charge, and both Kansas Wesleyan University students and the public will have opportunities to participate during the nearly week-long festival.&nbsp;

“We are very excited to announce this festival,” said Dr. Milt Allen, chair of the KWU Department of Music. “We believe that ‘Fusion!’ is a very appropriate title that builds on previous festival efforts, as it better reflects what we value both musically and educationally as a department. From multiple styles of music, diverse performers, a deep educational commitment and a wide choice of events for the public, there’s truly something for everyone during Fusion, the KWU Festival of Music!”

The event gets underway at 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 4 in Sams Chapel, as the festival’s first concert features acoustic performances from popular local bands Everyday Lights and The Radicles. Everyday Lights, a six-person band that includes KWU alumni, will be performing on campus for the first time.

The following day brings another top-notch experience, as the KWU Wind Ensemble—directed by Dr. Carl Rowles—and the Festival High School Trumpet Choir perform with special guest, trumpeter Dr. Courtney Jones. Jones is currently the assistant professor of trumpet and artistic director of jazz and chamber ensembles at Florida Atlantic University, and has previously shared the stage with such greats as B.B. King and Stevie Wonder. The Feb. 5 event also begins at 7:30 p.m. in Sams Chapel.

Feb. 6 features two unique sessions, including “Coyote Fest,” a chance for KWU students to perform musical works from all genres. It will be held at Ad Astra Books and Coffee House from 7:30–9 p.m., and will be followed by the festival’s “Jazz Jam” at Old Chicago Pizza and Tap Room. Members of the public are invited to bring their instruments and join KWU faculty members Dean Kranzler—2020 Kansas Music Hall of Fame Inductee—on drums, and Steve Lueth on piano, for an informal evening of musical stylings that will run from 9:30–11:30 p.m. Local band Jazz Tangent will open the night with a brief set.

The third, and final, concert of the week is Feb. 7 at 7:30 p.m. in Sams Chapel, as The President’s Concert features special guests maestro Dr. Carolyn Watson and bass Dr. Nicholas Miguel, who will be alongside the KWU Festival Orchestra and the KWU Concerto winners.&nbsp;

Watson is the director of orchestral studies at the University of Kansas, and is the former director of the Interlochen Arts Academy Orchestra. She has made guest appearances with the Dallas Opera, the Kansas City Chamber Orchestra and numerous other professional orchestras. Miguel has performed throughout the Midwest for the past several years, including with the Grammy-nominated group True Concord.

The festival wraps up Saturday, as Watson and the KWU Festival Orchestra will be part of a conducting symposium in Sams Chapel from 10 a.m.–4 p.m. Area conductors will be participating as well.

TOPEKA — The 2020 Kansas Legislature is 
underway. And while Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly laid out some of her top
 priorities during the State of the State address on Wednesday, 
Republican leaders of the House and Senate (and Kelly's fellow 
Democrats) have some different goals.&nbsp;

Here are five issues that will be top of mind for the governor and lawmakers as the session heats up.

The short of it: A new bipartisan compromise might pave the way for Medicaid expansion in Kansas, but it’s not a done deal.

The details: Just days before lawmakers returned to Topeka, Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly and Senate Republican Leader Jim Denning <a href="https://www.kansaspublicradio.org/kpr-news/kansas-paves-medicaid-expansion-path-after-governor-and-top-republican-break-partisan" target="_blank">unveiled a Medicaid expansion compromise.</a>

The
 plan potentially could add another 150,000 low-income Kansans, and 
includes some things Republicans have been looking for, like a 
work-referral program and a provision aimed at stabilizing costs on the 
federal health-insurance exchange.

Kelly was clear in her State of the State about what expanding Medicaid would mean.

“When
 we do add this to our list of bipartisan accomplishments, it will not 
only save lives,”&nbsp;she said, “it will close the book on a long, 
senseless, expensive political fight — making room to improve access to 
health care and grow the Kansas economy.”&nbsp;

The agreement marks a 
major shift, as Denning was one of the lawmakers who helped block 
Medicaid expansion in past sessions. But other Republican leaders have 
not endorsed the compromise, including House Speaker Ron Ryckman.&nbsp;

“We
 all agree that we need to have a safety net for folks that need it,” 
Ryckman said. “This will be the first time in our history we’re 
extending benefits to folks that can work.”

Still, with the 
compromise drafted, expansion advocates believe they’re starting the 
session in a strong position to succeed after years of failed efforts.

The short of it: Kelly and Republican leaders are likely to clash over tax policy in the wake of federal changes.&nbsp;

The details: Republicans
 may take another run at tax changes after the governor last session 
vetoed their proposals — including helping businesses — due to concerns 
they would cause budget troubles.

Republicans, however, say that 
some Kansans and businesses saw their state taxes go up in response to 
federal changes, which is something the GOP wants to counteract. Larger 
businesses with overseas income would have benefitted under the <a href="http://kansaspublicradio.org/kpr-news/governor-kelly-strikes-down-tax-bill-veto" target="_blank">vetoed bills</a>.

Trying to get those changes through is again a priority for some lawmakers and the influential Kansas Chamber of Commerce.&nbsp;

“Corporate
 income tax liability in Kansas increased,” Chamber President Alan Cobb 
said last month. “We’re at a corporate competitive disadvantage.”

Many
 lawmakers want to cut the food sales tax, which is a popular idea 
that's difficult to accomplish because of the cost. Cutting it by a 
single percentage point would reduce tax revenue by <a href="http://www.kslegislature.org/li/b2019_20/measures/documents/summary_sb_22_2019" target="_blank">more than $60 million</a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Kelly
 has proposed reinstating a food sales tax refund, which lower-income 
Kansans would file for on their taxes. The thought is lessen the 
financial burden for people who need it most while limiting the impact 
on the state budget.

The short of it: Kansas took a baby step last session toward allowing medical weed, something advocates hope is the sign of a tipping point.&nbsp;

The details:
 More and more states are legalizing medical marijuana, including 
neighboring states of Missouri and Oklahoma, or outright recreational 
use of the drug (see: Colorado).&nbsp;

Kelly has said she supports 
medical marijuana, but the question is what type of bill lawmakers could
 craft in order for it to make it to her desk, considering previous 
efforts <a href="https://www.kcur.org/post/cannabis-oil-advances-kansas-legislature-other-medical-marijuana-proposal-dies" target="_blank">have failed.</a>

Lawmakers did venture into the cannabis caucus<a href="https://www.kcur.org/post/doctors-note-might-get-you-hook-possessing-cbd-thc-kansas#stream/0" target="_blank"> last year</a>,
 giving people a legal defense if they use CBD oil containing limited 
amounts of THC, the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana.&nbsp;

<a href="https://www.kcur.org/post/no-smoking-kansas-medical-marijuana-push-aims-edibles-and-topicals#stream/0" target="_blank">One idea</a>
 that a committee studied before the 2020 session would allow only 
edible and topical forms of weed, not products that you can smoke. 
Another bipartisan proposal <a href="https://www.kmuw.org/post/kansas-lawmakers-introduce-bipartisan-medical-marijuana-bill" target="_blank">introduced last year</a> would give veterans the first access to medical cannabis for treating PTSD or physical injuries.&nbsp;

Democratic Sen. David Haley believes enough states have taken action that Kansas may follow suit.

“Finally,
 the learning curve is coming to Kansas,” Haley said. Later, he added, 
“Let’s no longer look at the stigma. We have passed those days.”

The short of it: Abortion opponents want to change the Kansas Constitution to protect the dozens of abortion laws already on the books.

The details: Abortion opponents in Kansas were rattled by <a href="https://www.kcur.org/post/kansas-supreme-court-state-constitution-protects-abortion-rights" target="_blank">a court ruling</a>
 last year that found, in essence, the right to abortion is in the state
 constitution. They’re concerned that’ll lead to knocking down abortion 
restrictions already in state law, such as banning many abortions after 
22 weeks unless the mother’s health is at risk.&nbsp;

Conservative 
lawmakers and advocacy groups will push this session to change the 
constitution to specifically say it doesn’t provide a right to abortion,
 thus protecting restrictions already in place. Approving a 
constitutional amendment, which forces a statewide vote, is a top 
priority for Ryckman.

“We want the folks of Kansas to make that decision: if we’re going to be a pro-life state or not,” Ryckman said.&nbsp;

<a href="https://www.kcur.org/post/abortion-opponents-divided-best-way-undo-kansas-supreme-court-ruling#stream/0" target="_blank">There’s division</a>
 among opponents of abortion on the issue. Some would like to go as far 
as a constitutional amendment that would fully ban abortion. The 
influential anti-abortion group Kansans for Life doesn't favor that 
tactic, though, because they believe it would probably not stand up in 
court.&nbsp;

The short of it: The governor wants extra time to pay off the $9 billion in state pension debt so that Kansas’ budget doesn’t fall off a cliff.

The details:
 Lawmakers have made strides in recent years paying down a long-term 
deficit in the state pension, the Kansas Public Employees Retirement 
System. Still, the shortfall amounts to <a href="https://www.kpers.org/annualreport2019.pdf" target="_blank">$9 billion</a>.&nbsp;

There’s
 a plan in place to pay off the debt in about 15 years. Kelly said the 
payments will grow in the coming years to approach $1 billion annually, 
and the state should extend the payoff period for smaller payments. 
That’s known as reamortizing.

Her idea was roundly rejected by 
lawmakers last year, because extending the payoff period could 
ultimately add billions to the cost of eliminating the shortfall. 
Republican Senate President Susan Wagle hasn’t warmed up to the idea, 
either, saying on the first day of this session: “I just don’t think 
that’s a healthy thing to do for a budget.”

underway. And while Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly laid out some of her top
 priorities during the State of the State address on Wednesday, 
Republican leaders of the House and Senate (and Kelly's fellow 
Democrats) have some different goals.&nbsp;Here are five issues that will be top of mind for the governor and lawmakers as the session heats up.<figure>

2020 legislative fights in Kansas: Taxes, weed and your health

With colder air moving in, Sunday night looks to be a three-dog night.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Wichita, colder air will begin to work its way into the area from northeast Kansas on Sunday. High temperatures will range from lower 30s in Salina to the upper 30s in Wichita.

Colder air will continue to spill into the area for Sunday night. Under mostly clear skies, expect low temperatures in the teens, NWS noted.

Salina's Cobb named to Drury University Dean's List

McPHERSON -- Hess Fitness Center at McPherson Hospital is bringing a new “run anytime, run anywhere” 5K concept to McPherson, Feb.&nbsp; 1-15.

Called the Heart of McPherson Virtual 5K, the race format provides an easy way for runners and walkers of all levels to participate in a "race." Participants can run or walk the 5K anywhere--even on a treadmill. Official times and race completions are "on your honor," but Strava running app users will be able to “compete” for a top time.

“Virtual 5k’s have been a huge success in other communities, and we’re excited to bring this format to McPherson to bring attention to cardiac rehab and fitness during Heart Health Month in February,” said race director Krysti Bergkamp. “It’s also a great goal for people wanting to jump start their fitness routine in the new year.”

McPherson’s 'Virtual 5k' to raise funds for cardiac rehab



HAYS – There’s more than one way to make it to the NFL from an NCAA Division II school. 

Even before graduating from D-II Fort Hays State University in December, Tatyana Legette – who grew up in Topeka – took on a seasonal position in event operations for the Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium.

After dazzling FHSU basketball fans in Gross Memorial Coliseum for four years, Legette - an All-American last season - graduated with a bachelor’s degree in health and human performance with an emphasis in sports management and recreation and a minor in leadership. Her dream is to work in some capacity for a professional sports team. 

She mentioned that to one of her professors, Dr. Lynn Maska, and in passing to FHSU President Tisa Mason last summer. They forwarded Legette contact information for Nick Capo, head of external event operations for the Chiefs, who happens to be an FHSU graduate.

Voilà! Legette landed the seasonal gig and hopes it develops into a full-time position. She will be super busy Sunday, checking in ticket takers and reserved-section tailgaters at the AFC championship game in Arrowhead Stadium. One of the perks of the job is getting to watch the games after she gets finished with her pre-game responsibilities.

Even before graduating from D-II Fort Hays State University in December, Tatyana Legette – who grew up in Topeka – took on a seasonal position in event operations for the Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium.After dazzling FHSU basketball fans in Gross Memorial Coliseum for four years, Legette - an All-American last season - graduated with a bachelor’s degree in health and human performance with an emphasis in sports management and recreation and a minor in leadership. Her dream is to work in some capacity for a professional sports team. She mentioned that to one of her professors, Dr. Lynn Maska, and in passing to FHSU President Tisa Mason last summer. They forwarded Legette contact information for Nick Capo, head of external event operations for the Chiefs, who happens to be an FHSU graduate.Voilà! MANHATTAN – Kansas State University faculty will be presenting the annual Kansas Dairy Days at two locations in Kansas in late January.

The event is hosted annually to update and inform dairy producers and allied industry on hot topics and findings from research projects relevant to the Kansas dairy industry. Organizers have announced that this year’s events will be held in Whiteside on Wednesday and Seneca on Thursday .

“This event is a great opportunity to keep up-to-date on relevant and timely topics in the dairy industry,” said Luis Mendonca, a dairy extension specialist. “Presenters will share take-home messages about choosing beef sires to breed dairy cows, updates about robotic milking, and dairy replacement heifer economics. In addition, speakers will give an update on research projects that were conducted last year at K-State related to reproduction, health, and nutrition.”

“Never Give Up” is the theme of this year's community celebration.

Activities begin today and run through Monday. Following is the schedule.

Community Potluck Dinner. New Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church, 321 North Eighth Street. Bring a dish to share. Drinks and tableware provided.

Citywide Celebration. New Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church. Speaker: Dr. Adrian Douglas, president of Cloud County Community College. Music will be provided by various soloists and “sing-along” selections with attendees.

Youth-Centered Celebration. St. John’s Missionary Baptist Church, 215 South Chicago Street. Douglas also will be the featured speaker for this celebration, which also will include musical entertainment.

On Monday Jan. 6, 2020, the Saline County Sheriff’s Office responded to the area of South Simpson Road and East Water Well Road in Saline County for a report of damaged mailboxes of several Saline County residences. 

Sometime between Sunday, Jan. 5, at 5 p.m. and Monday, Jan. 6, at 6:40 a.m., unknown suspect(s) participated in what is known as “mailbox baseball” and damaged mailboxes along the side of the road.

Eight mailboxes were damaged between the 1000 block and 3000 block of East Water Well Road and six mailboxes were damaged between the 300 block and 3000 block of South Simpson Road.

Total loss and damage is estimated to be in excess of $750.

Crimestoppers seeks tips about damaged mailboxes

OLATHE, Kan. – Fruit and vegetable growers can meet the training requirements of the Food Safety Modernization Act Produce Safety Rule at workshops across Kansas, including Feb. 18 in Colby, March 19 in Olathe, and May 29 in Wichita.&nbsp;

Farms subject to the FSMA Produce Safety Rule must have at least one supervisor who has successfully completed specific training requirements, said Londa Nwadike, food safety specialist with K-State Research and Extension and the University of Missouri Extension. The FSMA rule includes standards related to water quality, use of manure and compost, and worker health and hygiene.

For adequate planning, advance registration is encouraged. Participants will receive a training certificate and training manual. Lunch is provided. Registration is $20, thanks to funding and support from the Kansas Department of Agriculture Produce Safety Program, through funding from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Dates set and cost-share available for GAP certification

Produce growers who have a USDA Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) audit between Oct. 1, 2019 and Sept. 30, 2020 are eligible for cost-share assistance. Qualifying farm operations can receive up to half the cost of their USDA GAP audit, to a maximum payment of $1700. To assist produce growers in preparing for a GAP audit, K-State Research and Extension is also holding workshops to assist growers in preparing the food safety plan and record keeping documentation required for GAP certification. Workshops will be held in Colby on Feb 19, Olathe on March 20, and Wichita on May 28.
