UPDATE: NWS places multiple counties in winter storm warning

TOPEKA—The 12th Judicial District Nominating Commission has selected Regine Thompson to fill a magistrate judge vacancy in Republic County.

The commission conducted public interviews of nominees for the position today in Belleville. Three people had applied for the opening. The vacancy was created by the resignation of District Magistrate Judge Starla Nelson.

Thompson's new position will be effective on her swearing-in. She is a partner in the law office of Thompson &amp; Thompson, Scandia.

The 12th Judicial District is composed of Cloud, Jewell, Lincoln, Mitchell, Republic, and Washington counties.

Kansas law requires that a district magistrate judge be:

a resident of Republic County at the time of taking office and while holding office;

a graduate of a high school, a secondary school, or the equivalent; and

either a lawyer admitted to practice in Kansas or able to pass an examination given by the Supreme Court to become certified within 18 months.

After serving one year in office, the new magistrate judge must stand for a retention vote in the next general election to remain in the position. If retained, the incumbent will serve a four-year term.

Salina Presbyterian Manor issues Art is Ageless call for entries

ABILENE -- The 2020 Winter Film Festival is underway in Abilene.

The 2020 Winter Film Festival, which began Sunday, continues each Sunday through February in the Eisenhower Presidential Library Visitors Center Auditorium, 200 Southeast Fourth Street in Abilene. The free films are open to the public. Registration is not required.

Following are the remaining films in the festival.

Sunday at 2 p.m.: First Man | PG-13. The riveting story of NASA's mission to land a man on the moon, focusing on Neil Armstrong and the years 1961-1969.

Jan. 26 at 2 p.m.: The Peanut Butter Falcon | PG-13. A young man with Down syndrome escapes from a residential nursing home and befriends a wayward fisherman on the run. As the two men form a rapid bond, a social worker attempts to track them.

Feb. 2 at 2 p.m.: Maiden | PG. The story of how Tracy Edwards, 24-year old charter boat cook, became the skipper of the first-ever all-female crew to enter the Whitbread Round the World Race in 1989.

Failure to stop at a stop sign led to a high-speed chase through part of Salina and onto Interstate 70 (I-70) early this morning.

Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning that at 1:10 a.m. Thursday, an officer observed a gray Pontiac Grand Prix that was southbound in the 100 block of South 11th Street turn west on West Walnut Street without stopping at the stop sign or using a turn signal. Forrester said the officer followed the car and attempted to initiate a traffic stop in the 800 block of University Place, however the vehicle accellerated and went northbound on Baker Street. The chase continued on the following roadways, Forrester said.

West on Iron Avenue, where the vehicle failed to use a turn signal or stop at the stop sign at College Avenue.

Driving in the center of the street while northbound on College Avenue and failing to stop at the stop sign at West Ash Street.

Continuing east where College Avenue turns into Bishop Street and failing to stop at the stop sign at North Ninth Street.

North on North Ninth Street at speeds as high as 65 mph.

West on I-70 at speeds in excess of 90 mph.

Forrester said the vehicle finally stopped near the Halstead Road exit, approximately one-half mile east of mile marker 249. The driver was Eric Goldberg, 41, of Salina, he said. Narcotics and drug paraphernalia were located inside the car, Forrester said.

Additionally, a passenger, Marcus Vinyard, Jr., 38, of Salina, told police that Goldberg would not let him out of the car, Forrester said.

Goldberg was arrested on suspicion of the following, Forrester said.

MANHATTAN – Students from across the country with an interest in the livestock industry and related careers can apply now for the Kansas State University Animal Sciences Leadership Academy (KASLA).

The academy, now in its 12th year, is an intensive four-day educational experience designed to enhance the leadership skills and animal science knowledge of students in grades 9-12.

Hosted by the K-State Department of Animal Sciences and Industry and sponsored by the Livestock and Meat Industry Council (LMIC, the academy’s goal is to develop young leaders within the livestock industry and prepare them for a successful future in this field.

“The biggest benefit that I received from KASLA was identifying my strengths and weaknesses and figuring out how to play to my strengths,” said Gavin Beesley, 2019 participant from Conway Springs, Kansas. “I would encourage others to apply. You get to have learning experiences while also being able to meet people in the agriculture industry. I got to meet so many fun people who were interested in similar&nbsp;things that I was and we got to have fun while learning.”

The academy will take place in Manhattan, June 24-27. Applications are due April 15, 2020, and can be found at&nbsp;<a href="http://www.youthlivestock.ksu.edu/" target="_blank">http://www.YouthLivestock.KSU.edu</a>.

The program’s itinerary will feature interactive workshops, tours and faculty mentor time with animal sciences and industry professors. Industry leaders will also join the participants frequently to share their knowledge and expertise.

Throughout the week, participants will work in teams to evaluate current events within the animal science industry in order to educate others. The leadership academy will culminate with team presentations and a closing reception on Saturday morning.

Only 20 students will be accepted for each session so that counselors, professors and industry leaders can provide individualized attention. Participants will stay on campus in university housing with program staff for the duration of the event.

MANHATTAN – Students from across the country with an interest in the livestock industry and related careers can apply now for the Kansas State University Animal Sciences Leadership Academy (KASLA).The academy, now in its 12th year, is an intensive four-day educational experience designed to enhance the leadership skills and animal science knowledge of students in grades 9-12.Hosted by the K-State Department of Animal Sciences and Industry and sponsored by the Livestock and Meat Industry Council (LMIC, the academy’s goal is to develop young leaders within the livestock industry and prepare them for a successful future in this field.“The biggest benefit that I received from KASLA was identifying my strengths and weaknesses and figuring out how to play to my strengths,” said Gavin Beesley, 2019 participant from Conway Springs, Kansas. “I would encourage others to apply. You get to have learning experiences while also being able to meet people in the agriculture industry. I got to meet so many fun people who were interested in similar&nbsp;things that I was and we got to have fun while learning.”The academy will take place in Manhattan, June 24-27. The leadership academy will culminate with team presentations and a closing reception on Saturday morning.Only 20 students will be accepted for each session so that counselors, professors and industry leaders can provide individualized attention. In our area, the National Weather Service (NWS) in Wichita has issued a winter weather advisory in effect from 5 p.m Thursday to noon Friday for the following counties in our area.

Mixed precipitation is expected. Total snow accumulations of up to one inch and ice accumulations of up to two tenths of   an inch, with winds gusting as high as 35 mph.

In central Kansas, snow and/or sleet may persist longer before transitioning to a wintry mix. In central Kansas, lighter ice accumulation but potentially a heavier snow/sleet accumulation will be the primary concern.

Slick roads, parking lots, and sidewalks are expected. Even a small amount of ice accumulation can create hazardous conditions and could impact the Thursday evening and Friday morning commutes. Slow down and use caution while traveling.

ABILENE -- Memorial Health System has a new respiratory care director.

After a thirty-seven year career in respiratory therapy, Eric Kohn retired Monday as MHS's respiratory care director and is ready to move on to other things. 

“I am sure my wife, Debra, will have a list of honey do’s for me,” Kohn said and smiled. “I have also signed up to be a volunteer for the American Red Cross National Disaster Relief. So, we will just have to wait and see where that leads me.”

Kohn says his wife plans to retire from her job as the school to career coordinator at Salina South High School in 2021. 

“We have two grandchildren, who don’t live too far away, and we have a new puppy, Riley, who will keep me busy until my wife retires in another year.”

Taking care of others is how Kohn has spent his entire professional career. Even as a director, he says he never gave up time working with patients because he did not want to lose touch with what his staff was doing and he enjoys people and building relationships with his hospital coworkers.

“Eric has brought a wealth of knowledge and experience to the respiratory care department, and has done an excellent job working with his staff to ensure he leaves them prepared for a successful future,” Chief Nursing Officer Angie Johnson said. “I will miss his ability to have a quick, witty joke during morning huddle time on, particularly challenging days. He really enjoys his grandkids, and has some super interesting hobbies – I’m excited for him to get to spend more time enjoying these things!”

Kohn came to MHS in the summer of 2008 as a part-time respiratory therapist. 

“I would fill in as they needed me,” he said. 

In 2009, he became the director of the department. 

“At the time, respiratory care was a very small department, with one full-time therapist, one PRN therapist, and one LPN on staff,” he said.

Over the past 10 years, Kohn has seen the respiratory department grow in size and services. 

“We’ve doubled our staff size and offer more services to provide our patients with the local care they need,” Kohn said. 

Respiratory care oversees the cardiac rehabilitation program, the sleep lab, and they work closely with the obstetric unit at Memorial Hospital to provide infants with respiratory care when needed. 

“We’ve built strong relationships with our physicians, APPs, and nursing staff, and we are proud to be able to help them provide patients with excellent health care; we make a great team because we all work well together,” he said.

Kohn said he is very comfortable about leaving the respiratory care department in the hands of Matt Mead, who he has worked with since 2010. 

“Matt is an instant fit for this role,” Kohn said. “I am glad Matt wanted to take on this position because I feel like he is the best person for the job. Why would we look outside of the organization for a new director when we have a great leader right here in the department?”

Mead is no stranger to the way Kohn has led the department.

“I am proud and heavily invested in the organization,” Mead said. “I am looking forward to continuing building our department and adding services for our patients.”
