MCPHERSON -- The McPherson County Health Department has reported another confirmed case of COVID-19.

The newest case is a male in his 20s who is currently isolating at home and has an unknown exposure, the healt department noted in a news release issued this afternoon.

Additionally, the case reported on Monday is related to a long term care facility, the health department reported.

"McPherson County is working with this facility to complete facilitywide testing, where we plan to complete over 350 specimen collections. At this time, no one in this facility is symptomatic and all families and staff have been notified and are cooperating with the testing strategy," the health department explained in the news release.

According to the health department, McPherson County now has 40 total confirmed cases and one case identified as probable by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE). Of the total confirmed cases, 30 have met KDHE recovery guidelines, the health department noted.

Robert “Rebob” Wayne Bartholic, age 58 of Ogden, passed away Saturday, June 13 at the Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, due to injuries suffered in a motorcycle accident, <a href="https://littleapplepost.com/posts/5ee8ecb4ebfb13423b27d858">according to his obituary.</a>

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 1992 Chevy pickup driven by Raul Martinez, 57, Chase, was northbound on U.S. 56 three miles south of Kansas 4 Highway.

The driver failed to stop at the stop sign at U.S. 77 and rear ended Harley Davidson motorcycles driven by Bartholic and&nbsp; Mark P. Brown, 40, Council Grove which were&nbsp;stationary facing north sitting at the stop sign of U.S. 77 and U.S. 56 in Herington.

EMS transported Brown and Bartholic to the hospital in Abilene. Bartholic was later transferred to Wesley Medical Center.&nbsp; Martinez was not injured. Brown and Baretholic were not wearing helmets, according to the KHP.

Kansas man dies 6 days after injured in motorcycle crash

Two people were injured in a two-vehicle accident Tuesday morning in South Salina.

A 2003 Chevrolet Silverado driven by George McLaughlin, 66, of Salina, was northbound on South Ninth Street and attempting a left turn onto West Magnolia Road when it collided with a southbound 2015 Infinity driven by Christian Browne, 22, of Salina, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning. The impact rolled the pickup on its side, he said.

McLaughlin was transported by EMS to Salina Regional Health Center for an evaluation, Forrester said. A 15-year-old male passenger in the pickup was treated on the scene by EMS for a cut hand, he said. A 13-year-old female passenger in the pickup was not injured, Forrester added. 

Both vehicles sustained disabling damage and were towed from the scene, he said.

According to Forrester, the wreck remains under investigation.

Two injured in two-vehicle wreck in south Salina Tuesday

UPDATE: The Salina Police Department has corrected information given to media concerning this story. The information about the owner of the parked pickup was corrected and the the driver of the Salina Fire Department Suburban was named.

An on-duty police officer was cited for failing to stop at a stop sign after a two-vehicle accident Tuesday afternoon in north Salina.

Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning that a department Ford Explorer driven by Officer Karl Scheppelmann, 25, of Salina, was southbound on North Columbia Avenue just before 2:30 p.m. Tuesday when Scheppelmann failed to stop at the stop sign at the intersection with East Ash Street and collided with an eastbound Salina Fire Department Chevrolet Suburban that was running on East Ash Street with lights and siren. The Suburban was driven by&nbsp;Todd Gerbrandt, he said.

The view of the stop sign was partially blocked by a tree and an illegally parked pickup with a ladder leaned up against it, he noted.

Scheppelmann complained of neck and arm pain and Gerbrandt complained of left arm pain, Forrester said. A passenger in the Suburban, a 20-year-old male from Lindsborg, was not injured, he added.

Scheppelmann was cited for disobeying a stop sign, Forrester said. 

Additionally, the owner of the illegally parked 1989 Ford F150, Luther Martin, 63, of Salina, was cited for parking within 30 feet of a stop sign, Forrester explained.

Both the Explorer and the Suburban had disabling damage and had to be towed from the scene, he added.

Scheppelmann was not responding to the same incident as the Salina Fire Department vehicle, Forrester said.

UPDATE: SPD officer runs stop sign, collides with SFD vehicle

No one was injured when a Lexus caught fire in eastern Saline County on Tuesday afternoon.

Juan Reveles-Murillo, 20, of Salina, was driving a 2001 Lexus in the 400 block of South Gypsum Valley Road at approximately 2:30 p.m. when the vehicle went into the ditch and got stuck, Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said this morning. When Reveles-Murillo got out of the vehicle, he smelled smoke, Soldan said.

By the time deputies and firefighters from Rural Fire District No. 5 arrived, the Lexus was engulfed. The loss was estimated at $2,000, Soldan said.

Driver escapes injury when Lexus catches fire

A boat stolen from its mooring on the Solomon River on Saturday has been recovered in Dickinson County.

Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said this morning that the 12-foot aluminum Meyers semi-V boat with 9.9 hp Evinrude outboard motor belonging to Saline County resident Michael Stinchcomb was located Tuesday in Dickinson County.

The boat appeared to be nearly as it was before it was stolen, Soldan said. Only a couple of dents in the boat were reported, he explained. Damage was estimated at $150, Soldan said.

Wow, we blew right through spring and are bearing down on summer, and in the Farm Bureau world that means annual meeting time is right around the corner. Annual meetings are vital in the life of our organization and something many members look forward to. It is a time to conduct the business of our organization but also a time to fellowship with our neighbors and friends.

Just like our policy positions, the decision on each county’s annual meeting is left up to the grassroots level and your local board is deciding what your meeting will look like this year.

Some may decide the risk is low in their county and continue with their traditional annual meeting, and that is fine. However, many of our local boards will decide a different mode of annual meeting needs to happen this year. It may be a business only meeting, meant to lessen the time we spend together and therefore lower the risk of passing a virus on. I suppose some may take the route of a "virtual" annual meeting utilizing the technology available to us. That is the lowest risk option and may be the best in some areas.

No matter what type of meeting your county decides to have, you can rest assured  the board did it with the health and wellbeing of their fellow farmers and ranchers in mind. It may not look like the annual meeting we are used to, and that may be a cause of disappointment. Hopefully it will be a one-time measure. You can rest assured that the decision was made after a great deal of thought and planning with the best interest of everyone in mind.

On a similar note, continue to check in with us on news about Kansas Farm Bureau’s Annual Meeting. That seems like a long way down the road, but I am sure that December will be here before we know it. Just know your state staff and board members are also watching the situation closely and developing alternate plans with the hope they’re not needed. I promise you when a decision is made, it will be just like the one at your county level and have the best interest and safety of all members in mind.

We have never done anything like this before because we have never seen anything like this before. Patience is a virtue, and we want to make sure that all members are safe and healthy. Hang in there, take the proper precautions and we will all make it through this healthy and happy and ready for annual meetings in 2021. It will be worth it.

ABILENE -- Memorial Hospital has announced a change to its visitation policy during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Memorial Hospital is now allowing one designated visitor, per patient, for the duration of the patient’s stay.&nbsp; The designated visitor must be at least 18 years old.

No visitors will be permitted for patients that have a COVID-19 diagnosis.

When members of the Saline County Sheriff's Mounted Patrol &amp; Rescue Squad (MPRS) say "at your service," they mean it. 

Since mid-April, the 24-member group has been delivering essential items to people in Saline County who are at a higher risk for contracting COVID-19. The service is possible, in part, thanks to a $2,000 grant from the Salina Area United Way's COVID-19 Relief Fund.

Through the program, MPRS members pickup and deliver necessities such as groceries and prescriptions. The service is offered free of charge to Saline County citizens in need.

"We noticed other counties had groups offering to pick up and deliver essential items and when we were looking for a way to help during the COVID-19 pandemic, we identified this as an area that we could be of service," Deputy Cain Humphrey told Salina Post. 

Because of the grant from the Salina Area United Way, MPRS was able to purchase personal protective equipment that then provided them the ability to help others.

"This allowed us to offer this service while limiting exposure to those members of the community who are at a higher risk for COVID-19 while also protecting our members," Humphrey said.

It would appear that their efforts have been well received.

"We were met with open arms and so much appreciation.  Tears at times even and comments like, 'this help came just in time,'" Humphrey said of the people the group has assisted.

The group's efforts to help, however, have not been limited to this delivery service.

On Saturday, MPRS joined forces with the Salina Area United Way, North Salina Community Development, and the Greater Salina Community Foundation to deliver 160 essential supply kits to those in need. The kits included food items, hygiene items, and grocery coupons and gift cards to several locations around Salina.

"These three groups were instrumental in organizing and making these supplies available and we took part in putting them together and delivering them," Humphrey explained.

Additionally, MPRS members also have taken deliveries of personal protective equipment (PPE) from both federal and state stockpiles, secured these supplies, and assisted with their delivery, while working with Saline County Emergency Management.

Humphrey stressed, however, that the program to deliver essentials to members of the community who are at a higher risk for COVID-19 is ongoing.

"It is important to note that we are still available should folks need us," Humphrey said.

Mounted Patrol & Rescue Squad provides essential services to help others

TOPEKA&nbsp;– The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE, in conjunction with the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism (KDWPT, issued a warning for blue-green algae for Marion Reservoir in Marion County today.

When a warning is issued, KDHE recommends the following precautions be taken:

•Lake water is not safe to drink for pets or livestock.

•Lake water, regardless of blue-green algae status, should never be consumed by humans.

•Water contact should be avoided.

•Fish may be eaten if they are rinsed with clean water and only the fillet portion is consumed, while all other parts are discarded.

•Do not allow pets to eat dried algae.

•If lake water contacts skin, wash with clean water as soon as possible.

•Avoid areas of visible algae accumulation.

Additionally, watches remain in effect for the following locations:

Kanopolis Reservoir, Ellsworth County

Gathering Pond at Milford Reservoir, Geary County

Lake Perry&nbsp;Zone D, Jefferson County

Cheney Lake, Reno/Kingman/Sedgwick Counties

A watch means that blue-green algae have been detected and a harmful algal bloom is present or likely to develop. People are encouraged to avoid areas of algae accumulation and keep pets and livestock away from the water.

Blue-green algae warning for Marion Reservoir; watches remain

A 2021 budget proposal presented to the Saline County Commission this morning would include new positions and a possible raise for county employees without an increase to the mill levy.

County Administrator Phillip Smith-Hanes presented his recommended 2021 budget to commissioners during their weekly meeting this morning. According to information from the county, Smith-Hanes' "recommended budget provides funding for 10 new positions and a possible 1% increase to employee salaries, with no increase to the mill levy. This is possible because of the amount of carry-over cash the county is estimated to have on hand at the end of this year, even after accounting for a downturn in sales tax and other revenues."

Another discussion of the 2021 budget will occur in the next couple of weeks, with commissioners providing direction on the issue "no later than July 21 so a final budget can be published in time for a public hearing on Aug. 11," the county information noted.

•Commissioners unanimously approved a memorandum of understanding with Fort Hays State University to employ a summer intern, with the intern’s wages paid through the Dane G. Hansen Foundation. The county will contribute $500.

•County Engineer Justin Mader discussd with commissioners a FEMA Alternative Procedures Pilot Program that involves identifying costs FEMA would have spent to help the county make repairs for damage related to the 2019 floods and then spending that money on alternative projects that are more cost-effective in serving the community.

TOPEKA—The 28th Judicial District Nominating Commission will convene by telephone conference at 2 p.m. Wednesday to review the nomination form and set the schedule for accepting nominations for a district magistrate judge vacancy created by the Aug. 14 retirement of Judge Mary Thrower.

The meeting is open to the public, and anyone who wants to listen may request instructions by emailing&nbsp;<a href="mailto:info@kscourts.org" target="_blank">info@kscourts.org</a>.

The 28th Judicial District is composed of Ottawa and Saline counties.

Kansas law requires that a district magistrate judge be:

•a resident of Ottawa County at the time of taking office and while holding office;

•a graduate of a high school, a secondary school, or the equivalent; and

•either a lawyer admitted to practice in Kansas or able to pass an examination given by the Supreme Court to become certified within 18 months.

The nominating commission will seek nominations, then convene to interview nominees. Interviews are open to the public. The commission will then appoint a district magistrate judge.

After serving one year in office, the new magistrate judge must stand for a retention vote in the next general election to remain in the position. If retained, the incumbent will serve a four-year term.

Salina High School Central announces spring 2020 honor roll

HUTCHINSON — Even pollinators like to dine at the Kansas State Fair.

The Kansas State Fair’s Education Department is recognizing the important role of bees, butterflies and other pollinating insects during National Pollinator Week while having some fun at the same time.

The Fairgrounds will be abuzz June 23 with the Fair’s inaugural Pollinator Picnic. The day’s festivities are from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and include hands-on activities at the Fair’s Education Center, talks at the Lake Talbott pollinator garden and food trucks. The Fair’s new mascot, Ike, will also make an appearance for photos at 5:30 p.m. at the Education Center.

Food trucks include a Pronto Pup trailer, along with cheese curd and funnel cake vendors. Fair staff also will be giving away 200 seeded sunflower plants and 2020 Pollinator Partnership posters.

Pollinators are vital to production agriculture. The global food supply relies on pollinators for crops to flourish. The U.S. Department of Agriculture estimates that one out of every three bites of food Americans eat exists because of pollinators.

The Fair has expanded its pollinator education the past few years, which includes four pollinator gardens across the Fairgrounds and curriculum centered on their significance.

The Pollinator Party is free and open to the public. Vendors will be selling food from their trucks. The Fair’s Sunflower Gift Shop also will be open in the Education Center. While the event is mainly outside, the Fair reminds people to be considerate of others and to social distance. Hand sanitizer stations will be on location, but visitors are also encouraged to bring their own sanitizer.&nbsp;

Cookies for Courage Program shares something sweet with healthcare professionals

This spring, Girl Scouts of Kansas Heartland launched a new program to deliver Girl Scout Cookies to essential workers on the front lines of the COVID-19 outbreak. 

Now the professionals at Salina Regional Hospital have something sweet thanks to generous Kansans. This week, Girl Scout cookies donated through Cookies for Courage were delivered to Salina Regional Hospital to enjoy. Through this initiative, Kansans have purchased packages of Girl Scout Cookies to donate to health care providers, grocery store clerks, and others who have been required to work amidst the pandemic. “Cookies for Courage has offered Kansans an opportunity to thank those keeping our communities strong,” Liz Workman, CEO of Girl Scouts of Kansas Heartland. “Kansans are known for helping others in need, and this new option has delivered a sweet treat to our essential community members on the front lines.” Girl Scout cookie season was set to run through March 22, but due to COVID-19, in-person sales were suspended. Cookies for Courage has offered generous Kansans the option to give individual Girl Scouts or entire troops credit for these donations. This has helped girls continue to reach their goals and power amazing experiences throughout the Girl Scout year. The hot and dry weather we are experiencing brings with it high grassland fire danger.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Wichita, hot and dry weather will prevail across the region for today and Wednesday.

Very high grassland fire danger levels will affect locations west of Interstate 135 (I-135) for this afternoon afternoon, NWS noted. Outdoor burning should be avoided. Additionally, very high grassland fire danger is forecast on Wednesday for locations west of I-135 in central Kansas. Timing is from about 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. each day, NWS reported.

A front will sag southward into the area and bring chances of storms to the region for Thursday afternoon into the weekend. Chances for storms be will higher across central Kansas, NWS noted. A few strong to severe storms will be possible.
