CONCORDIA -- Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Cloud County Community College has made the decision to cancel this year’s Kid’s College.

“While we are extremely disappointed to make this decision, we feel it is in the best interest of public health,” said Dr. Adrian Douglas, Cloud County president. “Due to the nature of the activities that take place during Kid’s College, and the large number of participants, we did not feel we could adequately practice social distancing to keep kids safe.”

Kid’s College was originally scheduled for July 13-15 on the Concordia campus. Historically, nearly 300 kids from the area had attended the event. Douglas said the number of kids in close proximity, while also sharing supplies, would make social distancing nearly impossible.

“We definitely do not want to undo what we, as a community, have done to mitigate the spread of COVID-19,” Douglas said. “I know there will be a lot of disappointed future T-Birds who can’t attend one of our largest community events. But rest assured, we plan to continue Kid’s College next year.”

Central's Dyson receives Cash Hollistah Scholarship

Saline County has announced the reopening of a section of Old 40 Highway near Solomon.

Old 40 Highway between Donmyer Road and the City of Solomon is now open to through traffic, however, an asphalt overlay between Niles Road and the City of Solomon is currently under construction, according to information from the Saline County Road and Bridge Department. 

 The overlay operation is utilizing a pilot car for the traffic control.  Motorist must be prepared to stop at the flagger locations, the road and bridge information noted.  Also, there are several locations where the pavement is uneven, so&nbsp; motorists are urged to be cautious when traveling through this area and pay special attention to all construction signs.

County reopens Old Highway 40, overlay work continues

Scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms will impact the region today, with rainfall amounts up to around three-quarter of an inch across central and southeast Kansas, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Wichita. 

Locally higher amounts are likely, NWS noted.

A few strong to marginally severe thunderstorms are possible today through this evening. While widespread severe storms are not expected, the strongest activity may be capable of dime to quarter size hail and 50 to 60 mph winds, NWS reported.

NWS: Rainfall, storms expected today, tonight

An apparent BB gun shot damaged a window at a downtown business earlier this week.

The incident is suspect to have occurred between noon on Monday and 5:25 p.m. Wednesday at Farmer's Insurance Group, 154 South Seventh Street, according to Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester.

The owner of the business noticed that the front window had been damaged by what appeared to be a BB gun shot that caused the glass to crack in several different directions, Forrester explained. The six-foot by six-foot window is valued at $1,000, he added.

Apparent BB gun shot damages downtown window

A 29-year-old Salina man was arrested Wednesday on requested weapons, theft, and drug charges.

Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester reported this morning that an officer was sent to Wilson Securty Solutions, 527 South Broadway Boulevard, in regard to a concern about the behavior of Kristoffer Augustine, 29, of Salina. Augustine was in possession of a Taurus PT111 9mm handgun and was seeking assistance because the weapon was malfunctioning, Forrester explained. Augustine left the store before the officer arrived, he added.

During the course of the case, police learned that Augustine is a convicted felon and was not to be in possession of a firearm, Forrester explained.

According to Forrester, an officer located Augustine walking in the 1500 block of East Crawford Street. He was in possession of the handgun, as well as a methamphetamine pipe, Forrester noted. The handgun was registered to a 34-year-old Salina man, he added.

Police made contact with the owner of the handgun, who told them that he suspected Augustine of stealing the handgun between 11 p.m. Tuesday and 12:05 a.m. Wednesday, Forrester reported. The handgun, valued at $250, had been on a desk in the man's livingroom, but was missing when he awoke on Wednesday, Forrester noted. The man told police that he had not reported the gun stolen because he had to go to work.

Augustine was arrested on suspicion of the following, according to Forrester.

The Ike Book Talk series moves to virtual format

OLATHE – A Kansas State University food safety specialist encourages consumers to head out to their local farmers’ market, and to keep safety in mind.

“Shopping at farmers’ markets is a great way to get healthy fruits, vegetables and other foods while supporting local farmers,” said Londa Nwadike, who has a joint extension appointment with K-State Research and Extension and the University of Missouri

Yet, shopping at the farmers’ market during the COVID-19 pandemic requires some extra precautions, Nwadike said:

Be prepared.&nbsp;Call the market or check its website or social media pages to see which vendors and items will be available. “Give yourself extra time,” Nwadike said. “Shopping might take longer with extra safety measures in place, as many Kansas farmers’ markets have updated their procedures to provide extra safety to customers and vendors. Make a list so you can efficiently find the items you need.”

Before entering the market,&nbsp;remind yourself to avoid touching your face and cellphone. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends wearing a mask or other cloth face covering when in places where social distancing can be difficult.

“Make sure to use a designated entry point when going in,” Nwadike said. “The farmers’ market may have established separate entrances and exits to avoid bottlenecks of people coming and going.”

Choose items with your eyes, not your hands.&nbsp;Let vendors handle the products you select. Stay at least 6 feet away from other people as much as possible.

“You want to avoid standing shoulder-to-shoulder with other customers while examining items,” Nwadike said. “Be patient and courteous while people ahead of you complete their purchases.”

Avoid using cash when possible.&nbsp;Many vendors and markets accept debit, credit and EBT/SNAP cards.

Make use of hand washing stations or hand sanitizer.&nbsp;The CDC recommends hand washing with soap and water, but if hand washing is not available, hand sanitizer can also be used.

For now, resist the temptation to socialize while shopping.&nbsp;“Farmers’ markets are normally a place to enjoy the atmosphere and visit with the vendors and other friends, but right now, farmers’ markets are importantly a source of food and a way to support local farmers,” Nwadike said. Consider sending just one household member to the market at this time.

Wash all produce before eating.&nbsp;“Even though there is currently no evidence that COVID-19 has been transmitted through food or food packaging, it is always important to use good food safety practices, which will help control foodborne illness as well as COVID-19,” Nwadike said. “That means washing the whole produce, even if you don’t eat the peel. Wash items such as cantaloupe and potatoes with a produce brush.”

Nwadike said commercial produce washes have not been shown to be more effective than water from the kitchen faucet. “All the research shows that clean, running water is the best way for consumers to wash produce,” she said.

If you’re running multiple errands, Nwadike also recommends making the farmers’ market your last stop to minimize the amount of time perishable foods sit in the car.

Be prepared before you head out to farmers markets

The Saline County Health Department does not have any additional cases of COVID-19 to report today.

Saline County is following the Governors “Ad Astra: A Plan to Reopen Kansas” issued through Executive Order 20-29. Currently, Phase 1 is in effect meaning the following activities are not allowed to be open or occur during this time (this plan and additional information can be found at <a href="http://www.saline.org/coronavirus">www.saline.org/coronavirus</a>):

•Large entertainment venues with a capacity of 2,000 or more

•Fairs, festivals, parades, and graduations

•No organized sports team practices

As a reminder as we attempt to reopen Saline County, the entire community is counting on each person to follow the below recommendations to help reduce the spread of COVID-19.

•It is highly encouraged to continue to wear cloth masks and maintain social distancing.

•It is highly encouraged for people to only leave their homes for essentials.

•It is highly recommended those employees in any service industry wear PPE (especially cloth masks).

•It is highly encouraged to continue telework.

•Avoid socializing in person with groups of 10 or more individuals in both indoor and outdoor settings.

•Any employees exhibiting symptoms should be required to stay at home and asked to call their health care provider.

•It will take the effort to follow the above recommendations from everyone in our community to continue our reopening.

Don’t ignore or delay your health! It is important to address all of your health care needs with your provider. Medical issues and treatments, from all preventive care like well-child visits, vaccinations, cancer screenings, and routine annual physical exams to manage chronic diseases like diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease, do not go away during these times. •The City of Salina also issued a press release regarding City staff and operations affected by the economic impact of COVID-19. ELLSWORTH -- The Ellsworth County Health Department has reported the county's first confirmed COVID-19 case.

The reported case is a male over the age of 50 who is stable and is maintaining in-home isolation, the health department reported.

"The Ellsworth County Health Department is working diligently to identify any close contacts of the individual and those who were exposed will be contacted as soon as possible. Close contacts will be monitored for fever and respiratory symptoms," the health department noted in a letter to county residents.

On Monday,&nbsp; the Kansas Department of Transportation will begin a mill and overlay project on K-14, beginning from the Ellsworth city limits to Interstate 70, approximately seven miles.

Construction will occur during daylight hours, Monday through Friday, with occasional Saturday work. Traffic will be reduced to one 11-foot lane following a pilot car through the work zone. Drivers should expect a delay of up to 15 minutes and plan extra time in their travel schedules.

APAC Inc. of Hutchinson is the prime contractor and have scheduled this project to be completed in June, weather permitting, at a cost of $1.5 million.

KDOT urges all motorists to be alert and obey the warning signs when approach and driving through a highway work zone.&nbsp; To stay aware of all road construction projects across Kansas go to&nbsp;<a href="http://www.kandrive.org/" target="_blank">www.kandrive.org</a>&nbsp;or call 5-1-1.

OCCK Transportation, through Salina CityGo, is continuing the successful “Get On &amp; Go” program for Salina area youth ages 7-18 for the summer of 2020.&nbsp;

Youth ages 7-18 will be able to purchase a “Get On &amp; Go” Summer Youth Bus Pass for $5 (normally $10.00 but with the conditions of 2020, at the reduced rate).&nbsp;&nbsp;The pass will be good for unlimited rides on Salina CityGo from June 1 to August 31.&nbsp;&nbsp;Youth must show the drivers their “Get On &amp; Go” pass when they board the buses.&nbsp;

Riding the bus gives kids the freedom to get around in the summer.&nbsp;&nbsp;The “Get On &amp; Go” Summer Youth Bus Pass is a great way for kids to get to summer activities, summer lunches, community centers, parks, the library, shopping and more.&nbsp;&nbsp;Social distancing policies will be followed as needed.

CityGo offers special youth bus pass

A 32-year-old man was cited after a two-vehicle accident late Tuesday morning in central Salina.

Devin Buchenau, 32, of Salina, was eastbound on West Crawford Street at Montrose Street on a 2012 Dong Fang D150TKB motorcycle when he looked away from the street and rear-ended a 2019 Ford Expedition that was stopped in traffic, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester reported this morning.

The Expedition was driven by Maegan Lee, 42, of Lindsborg, he noted.

According to Forrester, Buchenau had road rash and injuries to his right elbow and arm, but refused medical treatment.

The motorcycle had disabling damage to the front, but was removed by Buchenau, and the Expedition had minor damage to the passenger side rear end and was removed by Lee, Forrester explained.

Buchenau was cited for inattentive driving, Forrester noted.

I’ve received a number of calls lately to reschedule appointments because of COVID-19. Aside from the monthly hair appointments, my kids and I will not be visiting our dentist or eye doctor at our originally scheduled times this spring.

In the past, I have generally made these appointments around the end of school when the kids have a more flexible schedule. As I was on one particular call looking at calendar options for later this summer, I began to notice all of the events and functions that didn’t happen.

After penciling in a new appointment, I continued to look at all of the things I had not deleted on my calendar. Things like the pre-K Mom’s Day Tea Party, a music program, our elementary school’s field day and our county’s All Schools Day parade.

These were all days I had planned to take off to spend some special time with my kiddos. This realization brought some tears to my eyes as I realized my kids and I wouldn’t be able to experience some established traditions this year. 

As I was wiping my eyes, my son and daughter came tromping into the farm office with Rosie our farm dog not far behind. The office has not only served as my remote workspace for nearly two months but has also served as the kids’ remote schoolhouse. Evidence of learning and life is scattered throughout the room.

My two young children, covered in a thick layer of dust, were looking for a snack break. They made a beeline to my desk drawer where I keep some goodies in the event of an all-to-often emergency snack. 

I handed them each a packet of peanut butter crackers and asked what they were up to. They began naming off all of the shenanigans they and Rosie were doing that afternoon. From riding their bikes around the farmyard, gathering materials for a tree fort, setting up the water slide and gathering sticks for the fire pit. They had a busy afternoon planned. After gobbling down their snacks, they took off for another round of fun outside.

As I hollered at them to “be careful” and “shut the office door,” it was then that I realized I have been witness to all of the scheduled traditional spring events I was so sad to miss — only in a modified form.

I have been able to eat lunch with both kiddos nearly every day. And while I haven’t donned any special hats, we do eat finger foods on occasion and have even enjoyed some cream puffs I had originally purchased for the actual Mom’s Day Tea Party school event. While it might not be as fancy, and we generally have an unrefined hairy, stinky farm dog plotting to steal our food, we are still able to enjoy lovely conversations while also sipping on peach tea or lemonade. Modified Tea Party — check.

My daughter Isannah wakes up every morning singing a song and proceeds to go about her day singing while making multiple wardrobe changes and adding to the laundry pile. Modified school music program — check.

My son Banks has been throwing balls, lifting bags of seed, climbing everything and racing Rosie all around the farm. Modified school field day — check.

Both kids ride their bikes all over the farm. Banks generally puts cards in his spokes to make noise when his wheels turn while Isannah generally fills the basket on her handlebars with flowers and grass that she throws to her crowd consisting of Rosie the dog and Sunflower the cow. Modified All School’s Day Parade — check.

While the traditional events that held space on the calendar might not be happening this year, I’ve realized sometimes you have to open your eyes a little more to recognize the essence of those special events are still present.

Saline County is closer to an agreement with the City of Salina concerning an expo center lease.

During Tuesday's county commission meeting, County Administrator Phillip Smith-Hanes notified commissioners that the city had forwarded to the county Monday night a draft lease agreement for the expo center property in Kenwood Park. 

According to information from Saline County, the document was sent to the county counselor. Smith-Hanes told commissioners that they should expect an executive session next week concerning the draft lease agreement, the county information noted.

Other business covered during the Tuesday commission meeting, according to information from the county, includes the following.

Commissioners approved for the purchase of a new patrol vehicle for the sheriff’s office for $43,999. This will replace a unit that was totaled in an accident earlier this year. Insurance reimbursement will be used to help with covering the cost, but remaining equipment improvement funds will be used to make up the difference.

This system was acquired by the State of Kansas through a resource request to FEMA. This system can decontaminate thousands of respirators at a time and each respirator can be decontaminated up to 20 times. There is no cost for the use of this system, but it was required that the county approve the service agreement to be able to cover all of the agencies in Saline County for the use of this system. Michelle Barkley, emergency management director, told commissioners that this system can decontaminate several different brands of respirators.Justin Mader, county engineer, presented a Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) agreement to receive emergency relief funds for two projects that needed extensive repairs from the 2019 flood. Originally, these projects were not going to be covered by any funding from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, however, KDOT was able to provide emergency relief funds for projects that met certain criteria. $114,269.84 will be coming back to Saline County for two projects that met that criteria and have already been completed. Commissioners voted to sign the agreement and accept the funds. Commissioners approved for the purchase of a new mower deck for the Road and Bridge Department at a cost of $16,070. This replaces a 2002 mower deck.Darren Fishel, road and bridge administrator, provided a department update for March and April. He noted several things that the department has worked on, including the following.•Response to two minor snow and ice events.•Completion of the rebuilding of Wasserman Way and Frisbee Way.•Pothole repairs on county asphalt roads.•Hauling of 16,226 ton of rock, 1,865 ton of AB-2, 6,120 ton of sand, and 26 ton of road salt.•Completion of the seasonal tree trimming and tree removal.•Completion of the “No Passing Zone” warning sign replacement.•Replacement of 564 traffic control signs.During his weekly update, Smith-Hanes told commissioners that County Health Officer Jason Tiller does not plan on adding additional restrictions at this time to the guidance issued by Governor Laura Kelly. The health department is continually monitoring the COVID-19 situation, he said. Smith-Hanes told commissioners that there will be a stakeholder meeting later this week, provided a brief on procedures at some of the other county buildings, and then reminded citizens that if they need to conduct business with a county office to be sure to call beforehand.Smith-Hanes also updated commissioners on the 2021 budget process. He said that during the next three commission meetings, the commissioners will hear from the different allocation agencies. A special commission meeting with department heads concerning budget requests is scheduled for May 27, he noted.Additionally, Smith-Hanes told commissioners that the sheriff's office received word that it had been awarded $58,008 from the U.S. Department of Justice through the Coronavirus Emergency Supplemental Funding Program. A request for formal acceptance of the funding will come before the commission next week, he said.
