A Lindsborg woman was killed in a two-vehicle accident in southern Saline County Thursday night.

Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said this morning that a 2014 Dodge Ram three-quarter-ton pickup driven by Eric Blomquist, 54, of Assaria, was eastbound in the 500 block of East Salemsborg Road when a 1998 Honda Accord driven by Elizabeth Scott, 39, of Lindsborg, pulled out from a private drive in front of the pickup. 

The pickup was not able to stop in time and struck the Accord on the driver's side, Soldan said. The accident occurred shortly after 8:30 p.m. Thursday, he said.

Scott was pronounced dead at the scene, Soldan said.

Salina USD 305 and NEA-Salina each presented their opening proposals identifying changes to the Negotiated Agreement for the 2020-2021 school year.

NEA-Salina proposed amendments to the agreement regarding procedures related to safety and equity concerns, plan-time, employee leave for illness and disability, as well as benefits. USD 305 presented a salary schedule change and increases to teacher compensation, as well as the addition of parental leave-time and calendar changes.

Both parties agreed to review the proposals which will be discussed at their next negotiations session on July 1 at 10 a.m. in the Board of Education Office.

Temperatures will be noticeably less hot today thanks to mostly cloudy skies and scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms around.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Wichita, occasional thunderstorms will continue this morning across central and south-central Kansas, potentially lingering into the afternoon hours. At this time, the threat of severe weather looks low, however, wind gusts to 45 mph and nuisance flooding will be possible, NWS noted.

Additional thunderstorms are possible tonight areawide, but once again the threat of severe weather looks low.

Multiple rounds of thunderstorms are expected over the weekend, potentially continuing into next week. At this time, the greatest risk of severe weather looks to be Sunday afternoon through Sunday night, with lower confidence beyond that time, NWS explained.

As of now, Father's Day looks to start out dry and very warm. By late in the day, the risk of thunderstorms may increase, especially across central Kansas, NWS reported. By the evening and overnight hours, that risk will expand east into parts of southern and eastern Kansas. Severe weather will be possible with this activity, so stay tuned for updates.

NWS: Not as hot Friday; multiple weekend storms forecast

CONCORDIA -- Fresenius Kidney Care has informed Cloud County Health Center that it will not to move its dialysis center into the new hospital facility under construction and will cease operations in early 2022.

Fresenius Kidney Care currently leases space at 1100 Highland Drive in a building that is scheduled to be torn down at the end of the lease. While the Health Center had allotted space for a clinic in the plans for the upcoming facility, the company informed Cloud County Health

Center that its dialysis center is not financially sustainable.

“While we are disappointed to learn that Fresenius Kidney Care will not be moving into our new facility, they have pledged to ensure their patients have the support and time needed to find another option that works with their schedule,” said David Garnas, of Cloud County Health Center. “Government insurance reimburses dialysis providers below the actual cost to provide treatment, forcing providers to rely on a mix of privately-insured patients. This issue unfortunately affects rural areas like Concordia, where patients have fewer options for care.”

Over the next year, staff at Fresenius Kidney Care Concordia, which currently treats 16 patients, will work with each patient and their nephrologist to ensure seamless continuation of treatment, either with another Fresenius Kidney Care clinic, another dialysis center in the area, or the option to dialyze at home.

Dialysis is a treatment for kidney failure that rids the body of unwanted toxins, waste products, and excess fluids by filtering the blood, essentially replacing some of the lost kidney function.

When kidneys fail, they are no longer able to filter the blood. Patients must either receive a kidney transplant, perform their dialysis treatments at home, or receive in center dialysis treatment three times a week.

Many experts agree that home dialysis—either peritoneal or hemodialysis—is the best option aside from transplant for treating kidney failure. Choosing home dialysis can mean fewer food restrictions, greater scheduling flexibility, less frequent transportation challenges, and better outcomes. This move toward home therapy reflects a national trend, aligning with the administration’s recent executive order to increase access to home dialysis, which so often is the best treatment for patients, empowering them to participate in their own care in the comfort of their homes.

Whatever treatment option you choose, it is important to know if you are getting the right amount of dialysis. Tests should be done regularly to check the amount of dialysis you receive.

Rock Community Foundation awarded over $59,000 to eight projects throughout

LINDSBORG -- Dr. Adam Pryor, dean of academic affairs and associate professor of religion, has been promoted to the role of vice president for academic and student affairs.

Pryor started working at Bethany College in 2013 as an assistant professor in the religion department. He previously supervised the Center of Discovery, Reflection, and Vocation from 2014-2017, served as the director of CORE Education from 2017-2019, and started as the dean of academic affairs for student success in 2019. Throughout his time at Bethany College, he has also been an active researcher serving in various capacities as a member of the American Academy of Religion and the North American Paul Tillich Society.

"I am so happy that Dr. Pryor has agreed to join my leadership team. Over the past two years, I have appreciated his dedication to our students and to Bethany,” said Interim President Elizabeth Mauch.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Wichita, strong to severe thunderstorms will be possible along a cold front this evening into the overnight hours, especially over central and northeast Kansas. The main hazards will be hail up to quarter size and damaging downburst winds up to 60 mph, NWS noted.

Scattered storms will be possible on Friday with storms becoming more widespread Friday night into Saturday morning, especially for northern Kansas. Nickel size hail and 50 to 55 mph winds will be possible, NWS reported.

Periodic storm chances will continue for Saturday through Wednesday of next week. Some of the storms could become strong and capable of producing small hail, gusty winds, and heavy rainfall, according to NWS.

MCPHERSON -- The McPherson County Health Department today reported the county's 41st confirmed case of COVID-19.

The newest positive case is a female in her teens who is currently isolating at home with known exposure to another positive case, a news release from the health department noted.

As of today, McPherson County county has 41 confirmed COVID-19 cases and one case identified as probable by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE). Of those cases, 30 have met KDHE recovery guidelines, the health department reported.

"McPherson County Health Department recommends McPherson County remains in Phase 3 until June 29th, 2020. The team will reevaluate the community standings and risk for spread later next week before recommending we move to Phase Out. This decision is based off of the current facility investigation, increases in positive cases over the last 14 days, and the recommendation from KDHE," the health department explained in the news release.

OCCK Transportation announces route between Salina, Abilene

Saline County Health Officer Jason Tiller this morning signed an order to move the county into the Phase Out portion of Governor Laura Kelly's Ad Astra plan.

The Phase Out begins at 12:01 a.m. Friday, according to the order. 

Under the order, mass gatherings will not be restricted, however, the order strongly recommends "that mass gatherings of all sizes follow social distancing guidelines to the extent possible."

Additionally, there will be no restrictions on businesses, however employers and businesses, as well as individuals, " are strongly encouraged to follow guidance" attached to the order.

Tiller signs order to move Saline County into Phase Out

A local man was arrested on requested drug and weapon charges after a traffic stop early this morning in central Salina.

Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning that at approximately 1:30 this morning in the 1800 block of South Ninth Street, an officer observed a maroon Dodge Durango that had an improper license plate. 

When the officer made a traffic stop on the Durango at Kraft Manor, the driver, Cassius Johnson, 37, of Salina, exited the vehicle and tried to walk away, Forrester said. Another officer arriving on the scene was able to detain Johnson, he said. Johnson had a suspended driver's license and no proof of insurance in the vehicle, Forrester added.

A police K9 was brought in and indicated the presence of illegal narcotics in the vehicle, Forrester said. When the Durango was searched, the following were found, he said.

Additionally, a baggie with 14.2 grams of methamphetamine was located in Johnson's pocket and another baggie with 10.8 grams of methamphetamine was found in the area where he was being detained, Forrester said.

Johnson was arrested on the following requested charges, Forrester said.

•Possession with intent to distribute a certain stimulant

•Possession of drug paraphernalia

•Criminal possession of a firearm by a felon

•Interference with a law enforcement officer
