The Saline County 4-H Development Fund has awarded area 4-H’ers scholarships for the 2020-2021 school year. 

The support of the scholarship winners and other 4-H activities is made possible through the generous donations of donors.

Saline County 4-Hers receive scholarships

ELLSWORTH COUNTY —Two people were injured in an accident just before 7:30p.m. Saturday in Ellsworth County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2019 Ford Fusion driven by Jazmine Shanell Peters, 23, Wichita, was fleeing from law enforcement&nbsp; Eastbound on Interstate 70 just west of the Sylvan Grove exit.

The driver attempted to avoid tire deflation devices,&nbsp; crossed the median and the westbound lanes of the interstate and entered the north ditch. 

The Ford then traveled back onto the roadway eastbound in the westbound lanes into oncoming traffic and struck a 2019 Volvo semi driven by William P. Woodley, 62, Salina.

EMS transported Peters to the hospital in Ellsworth.

EMS transported a passenger in the Ford Geneva Lee Walker, 19, Wichita, to Hays Medical Center. Woodley was not injured.&nbsp; Walker was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

The KHP did not report what prompted the chase or possible charges against Peters.

2 hospitalized after wrong-way crash on I-70 during chase

OCCK was selected by Sunflower Health Plan, a KanCare managed care organization, to be a regional distributor of almost 14,000 masks to 33 local agencies.&nbsp;

Masks were provided free of charge to nursing facilities, community mental health centers, and providers of home and community based services in the north central Kansas service area of OCCK.

Leslie Webb, OCCK’s risk manager, was the key point of contact for the agencies receiving PPE.&nbsp;&nbsp;She had this to say, “We are so grateful for the efforts of Sunflower Health to support the health and wellbeing of HCBS providers and customers.&nbsp;&nbsp;They saw a need and worked to fill it.&nbsp;&nbsp;We are proud to be a partner.”&nbsp;

Village Manor in Abilene was one recipient of the masks.&nbsp;&nbsp;Others included Brookdale Senior Living, Solomon Valley Hospice, Central Kansas Mental Health Center, Saline County Health Department/Home Health, Bethany Home, and TLC Professionals, as well as many others.

OCCK serves people in Saline, Ottawa, Cloud, Republic, Jewell, Mitchell, Lincoln, Ellsworth, and Dickinson counties.

Sunflower Health Plan distributed more than 450,000 PPE items across the state.&nbsp;

NWS releases two-day rainfall estimates

ABILENE --Get a virtual look at life at the Eisenhowers' Gettysburg farm during the next Lunch &amp; Learn program Thursday.

Life at the Farm ("I Don't Suppose You Could Ask for More") will be presented by guest speaker Alyce Evans, Eisenhower National Historic Site Park Guide. The virtual program will begin right at noon on Thursday, so please sign in early.

With the purchase of their Gettysburg Farm, Ike and Mamie finally achieved their dream of owning their very own home after 35 years of marriage. They dreamed of retiring quietly in the countryside, however their farm was much more than a simple retirement home. It served as a political and diplomatic tool throughout the president's two terms as well as a place for him to recuperate all while running a thriving cattle operation. 

This discussion explores the many facets of the place Ike and Mamie called home. Evans has worked for the National Park Service for more than a decade and as a full-time guide at the Eisenhower National Historic Site for two years.

Eisenhower Lunch & Learn to look at life at the Gettysburg farm

ABILENE -- What's a presidential library to do when a pandemic forces its closure? Why the staff finds alternative ways to continue working and interacting with the public, of course!

When the Eisenhower Presidential Library, Museum, and Boyhood Home in Abilene was closed by the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) on March 14 because of the COVID-19 pandemic, staff soon began working remotely.

"Our staff started working 100-percent remotely about a week later. Even though the facility has been closed, we have continued mission-critical work on a remote basis," Dawn Hammatt, director of the Eisenhower Presidential Library, told Salina Post.

At this point, the Eisenhower Presidential Library staff does not have definitive information about when the re-opening process will begin. They are, however, hopeful that Hammatt will soon be allowed back at the facility and, with the help of a handful of staff, will begin the first phase of the re-opening process.

With the size of the facility, the re-opening will be no small task.

"We have 22 acres and five buildings with varying levels of public space," Hammatt said. "Each space will receive specialized attention which will allow staff to create reopening plans that fit each space."

The safety of all persons at its facilities is of the utmost importance to NARA. 

"The National Archives and Records Administration has more than 40 facilities nationwide. Each with a unique building and staffing makeup. NARA has been working with several governmental agencies to ascertain the safest path to reopening. The agency leadership has been very thoughtful about the safety of our staff and our guests," Hammatt noted. 

A statement on the Eisenhower Presidential Library <a href="https://www.eisenhowerlibrary.gov/">website</a> includes the following.

"The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) is committed to protecting the health and safety of our visitors, customers, and employees during the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic. We are basing our reopening plans on guidance from the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), the Office of Personnel Management (OPM), the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), and others. Our reopening plans also consider the availability of  personal protective equipment, consideration of local conditions, and the need to negotiate changes with vendors that provide security and cleaning services as well as the Union that represents our staff.  We are working to reopen our facility to staff in the near future. After we have reopened to staff, we will continue our ongoing planning and implement necessary changes to allow us to safely reopen to the public."

Although the Eisenhower Presidential Library has been closed for more than three months, the staff has kept busy while working remotely.

"We have created additional <a href="https://www.eisenhowerlibrary.gov/">website</a> content and moved our public programs to a virtual space. We've also added educational materials, several virtual tours, and online exhibits both to our website and social media channels," Hammatt explained.

Additionally, the library's archives team has created electronic versions of cross reference sheets, she noted. 

"Nearly 60,000 pages have been transcribed. This new searchable electronic version of a previously analog document will allow researchers to more readily find the relevant materials in our holdings," Hammatt said.

Six sessions of library programs, such as the book club, the Lunch &amp; Learn series, and the Evenings at Ease lectures have been offered to the public in an online format, she said.

"We were even able to produce three virtual programs with the National World War II Museum in New Orleans which are now available on our YouTube channel," Hammatt said. "The opportunity to partner with a museum in another state has been fulfilling in a way that simply wasn’t possible with our in-person programs."

The online programming has proved to be successful.

"The ability to reach a new audience and have participants from Alaska to Florida and Minnesota to Oklahoma is phenomenal. We have had participants join in from more than 20 states so far that likely would not have been able to attend an in-person program," Hammatt explained.

She continued, "Participants have been incredibly gracious and eager to be a part of the Eisenhower experience through our virtual programming. The smiles, gratitude and true appreciation shown by the participants is incredibly moving and rewarding. I am proud to be a part of the National Archives mission and honored to have a role in sharing Ike’s legacy with the world."

Pandemic doesn't stop the work of the Eisenhower Library staff

If you've made outdoor plans for Father's Day, be sure to keep an eye on the weather. 

A few isolated showers and thunderstorms are expected in central Kansas this evening and overnight, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Wichita.

Sunday will be partly cloudy and hot with summer like temperatures, but by midafternoon Sunday, showers and thunderstorms will develop. This will be the time for the best chance for severe thunderstorms, NWS noted. Hail up to two inches and an isolated tornado are possible during Sunday afternoon, according to NWS. 

Sunday evening, scattered showers and thunderstorms will remain possible but the severe weather threat will diminish with wind (up to 70 mph) and very heavy rain becoming the more likely threat, NWS reported. The rain threat is expected to continue into the overnight hours Sunday night.

June 19 marks a turning point in American history.

It is&nbsp;<a href="https://www.juneteenth.com/history.htm" target="_blank">Juneteenth</a>, the holiday that celebrates the end of slavery nationwide.

We are at another turning point in our nation’s history, and people of good faith want to be part of that change. This week, the Freedom Forum’s Power Shift Project hosted a webinar titled Do You Qualify As An Ally? (Especially Now). Nearly 400 people, most of them journalists, tuned in.

So are polls.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.monmouth.edu/polling-institute/documents/monmouthpoll_us_060220.pdf/" target="_blank">Monmouth University</a>&nbsp;reported a robust, remarkable jump in the number of people agreeing that racism and ethnic discrimination is a big problem in the United States. From 51 percent five years ago, to 76 percent (including 71 percent of whites) today.

People want to change systems that are inherently biased.

But they also know they have to change themselves, too.

They want to take responsibility for being “a trusted force for good,” which is how The Power Shift Project describes allies.

People want to do the right thing, the right way.

From the very first Power Shift Summit in 2018, launched in the wake of the #MeToo scandals in media, we learned that harassment and discrimination are inseparable. So, as we tackled the cultural change needed to produce equitable workplaces for women, we didn’t focus on their challenges alone.

We took on marginalization, discrimination, harassment and bias affecting&nbsp;all&nbsp;who are underrepresented in journalism.

We listened to expert voices, learned from research and bore witness to open wounds.

But even as we developed a curriculum to upgrade workplace cultures, we heard repeatedly from people who wanted to do more – as individuals.

That’s why we launched “Do You Qualify as an Ally?” a year ago.

Before COVID-19 and its disproportionate effect on women and people of color.

Before Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, George Floyd and Rayshard Brooks lost their lives.

Before marches that filled our streets and our screens with clarion calls for change.

We knew it was time to update our Ally teaching; to build on what we started and match this moment.

And so do people of good will – people who are more ready than ever to learn.

The hundreds who joined us took in 10 (of many) ways to qualify as an ally, with practical of examples of each point:

And we told them that most of all, to do all of those things without expectation of credit or profit.

Be like the university professor who teaches his students how unconscious bias causes female professors to get lower evaluations from students – on the week they turn in those evaluations.

Be like the TV station group leadership team that sent a memo to employees, stating that as a journalism organization, they’ve traditionally refrained from commenting on political issues – but that racism isn’t political and employees have the right to speak out against it.

Be like the young NFL social media producer who “<a href="https://sports.yahoo.com/nfl-video-roger-goodell-racism-black-lives-matter-players-employees-110927703.html" target="_blank">went rogue,”</a>&nbsp;working behind the scenes with players to create their “Black Lives Matter” video, calling for change in the NFL.

Be like the media organizations that monitor their own progress on diversity – or lack of it, who create databases of diverse sources – and&nbsp;<a href="https://sources.npr.org/" target="_blank">share them</a>.

Be like the newsrooms that listened to the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nabj.org/news/512370/NABJ-Statement-on-Capitalizing-Black-and-Other-Racial-Identifiers.htm" target="_blank">National Association of Black journalists</a>, tossed out the AP Stylebook guidance, and have turned “black Americans” into “Black Americans” out of respect.

That’s a taste of what those 395 participants learned about for one hour on a Monday afternoon, on their journey to qualify as allies.

Concordia's Brandao on Lincoln Memorial University Dean's List

The task at hand sounds straight-forward – counting each person (only once) and recording where they live. It is something that has been done in our country every 10 years since President George Washington was in the White House.

But this year, that simple task must be completed in the face of unprecedented challenges. In the midst of a global pandemic, taking a few minutes to participate in the U.S. Census may not seem important right now. But that thinking is wrong.

Getting a complete and accurate count of the people living in Northwest Kansas may be more important now than ever. There aren’t as many of us here as there used to be. We can’t afford to have anyone go uncounted.

Why does it matter?&nbsp;Census results are used in determining the distribution of federal funding.&nbsp;The Counting for Dollars 2020 Project completed by the George Washington University Institute of Public Policy shows that Kansas receives more than $6 billion a year in funding through the 55 largest federal spending programs for infrastructure and services. Health clinics, housing, schools, senior services, fire stations, job training, veterans’ programs and hundreds of other services and programs receive federal funding.

If only 1 percent of the population of Kansas goes uncounted, the state could miss receiving nearly $604 million in federal funding over the next decade, according to a Kansas Counts estimate.

At this point, we are much more than 1 percent short on the count. According to a Kansas Counts estimate, if the census were to stop where it was in mid-June, Kansas – which was at about 65 percent in its response rate – stood to lose $2.2 billion&nbsp;every year&nbsp;for programs that improve the quality of life for all of us.&nbsp;For each person not counted, Kansas loses more than $20,000 in government funding over the coming decade.

And it’s not just about money. There’s also the original purpose of the Founding Fathers when they mandated in the Constitution that a census be taken every 10 years. Census population figures are used to set the number of representatives each state has in the U.S. House of Representatives, as well as the number of electoral votes for each state during a presidential election.

The Big 1st&nbsp;Congressional District, which includes Northwest Kansas, already covers more than half the state. A count that is not complete could needlessly cause the district to grow even more, diluting our representation in Congress.

Data is also used for community planning and business development.

The good news is, it’s not too late to do something about it. Census deadlines have been extended. If you can still find those census letters in the stack of things you thought you would get to later, pull one of them out and go online to 2020Census.gov and respond. If you received a letter but can’t find it, you can still respond online. If you have a post office box address, and a census worker left information on the door of your house, use that to respond.

If you aren’t comfortable responding online, you can either fill out the paper form you should have received in the mail or call, 1-844-330-2020 or for Spanish language, 1-844-468-2020.

If you have a neighbor or friend you think might need help responding to the census, ask if you can help them.&nbsp;By law, information collected is CONFIDENTIAL and only used for statistics. It cannot be shared in any way that could identify you.

For more than 56 years, the Dane G. But that thinking is wrong.Getting a complete and accurate count of the people living in Northwest Kansas may be more important now than ever. There aren’t as many of us here as there used to be. Responding to the census: A civic responsibility as important as voting

Today is Saturday, June 20, the 172nd day of 2020. There are 194 days left in the year. Summer begins at 5:44 p.m., Eastern time.

On June 20, 1837, Queen Victoria acceded to the British throne following the death of her uncle, King William IV.

In 1782, Congress approved the Great Seal of the United States, featuring the emblem of the bald eagle.

In 1893, a jury in New Bedford, Massachusetts, found Lizzie Borden not guilty of the ax murders of her father and stepmother.

In 1921, U.S. Rep. Alice Mary Robertson, R-Okla., became the first woman to preside over a session of the House of Representatives.

The dean's list comprises undergraduate students who meet requirements in the Colleges of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, Professional Schools and Science and Health.

All full-time admitted undergraduate students are eligible for the dean's list. To be included on the dean's list, students must have successfully completed at least 12 credit hours with at least a 3.5-grade point average for the semester. The spring list includes students from 15 states and U.S. territories and nine countries.

Avila University, a Catholic University founded and inspired by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, provides undergraduate and graduate education in the liberal arts and professional studies, preparing lifelong learners who make meaningful contributions to the global community.

Following is the Saline County COVID-19 update for Friday.

Over the past two days, the Saline County Health Department has seven new cases of COVID-19 to report:

•Three males in their 60’s.

All seven of these cases are associated with prior positive cases and all of these individuals are isolating at home. This brings the number of cases being actively monitored by the Health Department to 14.

The total number of cases for Saline County since the beginning of the COVID-19 emergency is now at 45.

There have been two deaths in Saline County; 29 other cases have met the criteria necessary to be considered recovered and have been released from daily monitoring and isolation. According to the Kansas Department of Health &amp; Environment, there are now 12,059 cases and 254 deaths statewide. This information can be found at <a href="https://www.coronavirus.kdheks.gov/">https://www.coronavirus.kdheks.gov/</a>.

One of the individuals associated with these new cases may have been at the Outlaws Bar, 1676 State Street in Salina, on the evening of Friday, June 12, or Saturday, June 13. Persons who were present at the establishment during those times should monitor themselves for symptoms of COVID-19 and contact their health care provider or the Saline County Health Department immediately if they experience fever, cough or other symptoms consistent with COVID-19. A reminder comparing symptoms of COVID-19 to other common seasonal illnesses is as follows.

As of 12:01 a.m. this morning, Saline County has progressed to Phase Out. The individuals who have contracted COVID-19 have done so during prior phases of Stay Home and Reopening. Community indicators such as hospitalization rates, hospital resource use and deaths have continued to support progress to Phase Out, as indicated on the attached graphic. However, the number of new cases reported this week is a negative and indicates that COVID-19 exposure remains a very present risk in Saline County.

Therefore, we are once again reminding everyone of the recommended measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19:

•Stay home if you’re sick

•Maximize physical distance (6 feet or more) in public settings

•Wash your hands frequently
