TOPEKA – Two Salina organizations have been awarded nearly $100,000 in grants to provide services for victims of crime, Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt announced today.

The grants were awarded to support the following programs:

Child Advocacy &amp; Parenting Services, Inc. (CAPS),&nbsp;$32,500 to increase support of child abuse victims through increased advocacy.

CAPS, $12,000 to continue to develop capacity to provide services to victims of human trafficking, and to increase public awareness about human trafficking through educational materials and public speakers.

CAPS,&nbsp;$5,400&nbsp;for operating expenditures for children’s advocacy centers.

Domestic Violence Association of Central Kansas,&nbsp;$50,000 to provide temporary emergency shelter and trauma-informed support services to victims of domestic violence, sexual assault and stalking, as well as their dependent children, in order to meet their immediate health and safety needs. Educational services will also continue to be provided to reduce the incidence of domestic and sexual violence.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

“Organizations across Kansas do great work every day to support victims of crime,” Schmidt said. “We are proud to support these organizations through the victims services grant programs.”

The awards were made from the Human Trafficking Victims Assistance Fund, the Protection from Abuse Fund, the State Crime Victims’ Assistance Fund, and the Children’s Advocacy Centers Fund. The Human Trafficking Victim Assistance Fund is funded through fines, penalties, forfeitures and State General Fund appropriations. The Protection from Abuse Fund is funded by State General Fund appropriations, marriage license fees, county court costs and municipal court assessments. The State Crime Victims’ Assistance Fund is funded though the remittance of applicable fines, penalties and forfeitures from clerks of the district courts. The Salina Fire Department won the American Red Cross Battle of the Badges blood drive competition between local fire, law enforcement and emergency medical services&gt;personnel.

The Salina Fire Department collected five more votes than the Salina Police Department and won bragging rights and a traveling trophy.

“We’re grateful for all those who donated in the competition,” said Terri Novotny, Kansas/Oklahoma&nbsp; Blood Services Region. “For those battling serious medical conditions, the Battle of the Badges helps ensure blood will be available whenever and wherever it is needed.”

The Battle of the Badges blood drive was held Monday through Wednesday and collected a total of more than 260 pints of blood. Battle of the Badges is a friendly competition between first responder groups to encourage community members to donate blood.

Salina Fire Department wins Battle of the Badges blood drive competition

A 14-year-old boy has been arrested in connection with multiple incidents in south Salina.

Salina Police Captain Gary Hanus reported this morning that Colton Worcester, 14, of Salina, was arrested Wednesday in connection to multiple incidents occurring between Aug. 21 and Wednesday.

According to Hanus, on Wednesday morning, officers located a stolen vehicle with the assistance of the owner who was using a GPS application. The vehicle was tracked to the area of South Columbia Avenue and Gypsum Avenue. The vehicle was observed being driven and was stopped near the intersection of East Iron Avenue and South Columbia Avenue, he noted.

At that point, Worcester ran from the vehicle and was apprehended after he was found hiding in the 700 block of East Iron Avenue, Hanus explained. Worcester was in possession of a stolen handgun taken in a vehicle burglary Monday night, Hanus added. 

Investigators with the Salina Police Department Detective Division interviewed Worcester and determined he was connected to multiple incidents in south Salina, Hanus reported. 

Worcester was arrested on the following requested charges and placed in the Juvenile Detention Center in Junction City, according to Hanus.

Hanus noted that the investigation is continuing and additional charges may be forthcoming.&nbsp;

The officers involved terminated their pursuits due to public safety when the driver began driving in a reckless manner.

The possible driver of the vehicle in these events is a white adult female with a medium build, dark hair, wearing a gray headband, tank-top and shorts. The person had a brace on her right ankle.

If you honestly feel like you deserve a raise because of your
effort and performance on the job, that’s fine. Sit down with your leader, and
make an objective, logical, and reasonable argument for why you deserve more
money. I wouldn’t mention your co-worker, because it’s just not relevant. What is
relevant is the value you bring to the company.&nbsp;

I understand how you feel right now. But no, you don’t have
the “right” to complain. You agreed on your pay when you took the job, and you
should perform your duties with <a href="https://www.daveramsey.com/blog/ways-to-be-a-leader-in-your-community">integrity and character</a>. What someone else does, or doesn’t
do, isn’t tied to your personal compensation.

If you think you deserve a raise, and you’ve got the results
to prove it, sit down and have a respectful conversation with you leader. Show
him or her the numbers, and the value you bring to the company, and explain why

seems like that would help me get out of debt faster.

I get what you’re saying. It might help speed up the process
a tiny bit, but the habits that got you into debt in the first place won’t
change just because you’ve switched credit card companies. What you’re talking
about is an easy way to lower the interest rates—temporarily, in most cases—but
it doesn’t keep you from taking on more <a href="https://www.daveramsey.com/blog/debt-consolidation-truth">debt.</a>

Many people think they’ve really done something to solve
their debt problems when they do this. But you’ve got to remember that getting
out of debt, and gaining control of your finances, is all about changing the
person you see in the mirror. You’ve got to make a commitment to getting out of
debt, staying out of debt, and sticking to a written, <a href="https://www.everydollar.com/guide-to-budgeting-dave-says">monthly budget</a>—that means keeping track of every,
single dollar and living on less than you make.

DAVE SAYS: Show your value, change the person in the mirror

MANHATTAN – It is certainly a good thing, Karen Blakeslee says, that September is widely known as Food Safety Education month.&nbsp;

But, says the longtime Kansas State University food safety specialist, knowing a little something about protecting yourself from food-borne illness is important all the time.&nbsp;

“We eat food every day,” said Blakeslee, who also is the coordinator of the university’s&nbsp;<a href="http://www.rrc.k-state.edu/" target="_blank">Rapid Response Center for Food Science</a>. “So, keeping food safe is a daily event, too. Using basic, safe food handling practices can eliminate many opportunities for foodborne illness.”&nbsp;

In September and every month, Blakeslee preaches the virtues of food safety’s four core principles:&nbsp;

Clean.&nbsp;Wash hands and keep cooking surfaces clean.

Cook.&nbsp;Use a food thermometer to ensure foods are cooked to a safe internal temperature, and to keep hot foods hot.

Chill.&nbsp;Put leftovers in the refrigerator promptly and keep cold foods cold.

Separate.&nbsp;When preparing and serving meals, keep raw foods away from cooked and ready-to-eat foods.&nbsp;

She added that good hygiene – always a food safety tenet&nbsp;–&nbsp;has come into greater light during the coronavirus pandemic, especially the importance of washing your hands. 

“Handwashing is your primary defense against spreading disease,” Blakeslee said, “not only for food safety, but overall health. Always wash your hands before, during and after handling any food.”&nbsp;

She notes&nbsp;<a href="https://extension.oregonstate.edu/collection/high-speed-hand-washing-resources" target="_blank">information from Oregon State University</a>&nbsp;that introduces the idea of high speed hand washing. The concept is intended to encourage school children or other large groups of people to take time to wash their hands.&nbsp;

Standing in line, the first person wets their hands and squirts them with soap. Then, they move to the back of the line to scrub hands while the others take their turn getting soap and water on their own hands.&nbsp;

By the time the first person reaches the front of the line again, they’re ready to rinse off the soap and dry their hands.&nbsp;

“We know that time is precious for everyone, especially in schools,” she said. “High speed hand washing can save time, keep the kids moving and most importantly get their hands washed. It also saves water, energy and ultimately helps prevent the spread of disease.”&nbsp;

Blakeslee said all food safety steps contribute to keeping meals safe.&nbsp;

“Do your part,” she said. “Not only for yourself, but for the health of your family and friends to prevent foodborne illness.”&nbsp;

A watch means that blue-green algae have been detected and a harmful algal bloom is present or likely to develop. People are encouraged to avoid areas of algae accumulation and keep pets and livestock away from the water. During the watch status, KDHE recommends the following precautions be taken:

●Water may be unsafe for humans/animals.

●Avoid areas of algae accumulation and do not let people/pets eat dried algae or drink contaminated water.

●Swimming, wading, skiing and jet skiing are discouraged near visible blooms.

●Boating and fishing are safe. However, inhalation of the spray may affect some individuals. Avoid direct contact with water, and wash with clean water after any contact.

●Clean fish well with potable water and eat fillet portion only.

KDHE investigates publicly-accessible bodies of water for blue-green algae when the agency receives reports of potential algae blooms in Kansas lakes. Based on credible field observation and sampling results, KDHE reports on potentially harmful conditions.

Kansans should be aware that blooms are unpredictable. They can develop rapidly and may float around the lake, requiring visitors to exercise their best judgment. If there is scum, a paint-like surface or the water is bright green, avoid contact and keep pets away. These are indications that a harmful bloom may be present. Pet owners should be aware that animals that swim in or drink water affected by a harmful algal bloom or eat dried algae along the shore may become seriously ill or die.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Wichita, central and eastern Kansas will experience one more hot day on Friday, with high temperatures in the middle to upper 90s. 

Heat index values will be even a little higher near 100 degrees, NWS noted.

MCPHERSON -- The McPherson County Health Department today reported four new confirmed cases of COVID-19 from Wednesday and today. Those cases bring the county total 194.

According to information from the health department, the following cases were identified.

●Positive case No. 191 is a symptomatic 18-year-old female with unknown exposure and is recovering at home.

●Positive case No. 192 is an asymptomatic female in her 20s with unknown exposure and is isolating at home.

●Positive case No. 193 is a symptomatic male in his 20s with unknown exposure and is recovering at home.

●Positive case No. 194 is an asymptomatic male in his 20s with travel exposure and is isolating at home (family of No. 190).

Of the 194 total cases, 175 have met Kansas Department of Health and Environment recovery guidelines, according to the health department. Two of the active cases are hospitalized, and one person has died, the health department noted.

In 1883, the catastrophic Krakatoa explosion reached a climax. Actually comprised of four stupendous explosions, the Krakatoa eruptions were so violent that two of the three volcanoes that were on the island, Danan and Perboewatan, disappeared when their magma chambers emptied causing both volcanoes to collapse. The north face of the third and largest volcano, Rakata, was sheared off. In all, around 75 percent of Krakatoa Island disappeared. The combined power of the four explosions was equivalent to a 200-megaton hydrogen bomb; 3.5 times more powerful than the 57-megaton Tsar Bomba, the most powerful nuclear bomb in history that exploded about 10 degrees north of the Arctic Circle over Novaya Zemlya on Oct. 30, 1961. The fourth and final explosion itself was 150 megatons. The collapsed volcanoes were responsible for the gigantic tsunamis that killed around 36,000 people. The highest wave reached around 150 feet while a second reached around 135 feet. The average global temperature in 1884 cooled 1.5 degrees Celsius and would be 1.2 degrees below normal for the next five years. The sun and moon appeared blue, green, and even lavender throughout the Pacific Basin. Believed to be the loudest noise ever recorded, the eruptions were heard around 3,000 miles away on the Western Indian Ocean island of Rodrigues. This Day in Weather History: Area south of Belleville pummeled in 1989

UPDATE:&nbsp;According to a post on the <a href="https://www.facebook.com/ConcordiaPoliceDepartment/">Concordia Police Department</a> Facebook page, the chase ended in Republic County. Ruffin was apprehended and taken to the Republic County Jail.

The Concordia Police Department has requested the following charges against Ruffin.

Requested charges from the Salina Police Department are pending, according to Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester.

A car stolen from a downtown Salina business was later recovered after a pursuit a couple of counties to the north.

Sometime on Tuesday or Wednesday, someone broke into Abner's Auto, 212 East Iron Avenue, and stole a small amount of cash and a 2007 Saturn Ion valued at $4,000, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester reported this morning. 

The front door window of the business had been shattered but remained intact and a 25-inch by 31-inch south side window was broken, he noted. According to Forrester, damage to both was estimated at $200. There was a stereo lying on the ground outside the window, he added.

Later on Wednesday, the Concordia Police Department was in a vehicle pursuit with a black 2007 Saturn Ion, and during the pursuit, the Ion struck a Belleville Police Department patrol vehicle that was assisting, Forrester explained.  

The driver, identified as Marquez Ruffin, 19, of Salina, fled but was later apprehended, Forrester reported. Charges are pending, he added.

111th annual Chapman Labor Day celebration canceled

Your first few days at a new job can be an emotional experience. You’re excited about the possibilities, but a little nervous about starting a new chapter in your career. There’s pressure to perform, and the expectation to achieve great things. There are a lot of new people to meet, too. It can feel like drinking from a firehose!

I believe you’ll feel more grounded and confident if you spend some time preparing for this transition. You may not be able to completely avoid a case of the jitters, but here are a few ideas that will help make your first days on the job rewarding and a little less stressful.

Don’t show up late on your first day at a new job! Use these tips:

●Drive your commute the morning before, so you can get a feel for traffic.

●Set a couple of alarms in case you sleep through the first one.

●Budget 20 extra minutes for the drive.

Your clothing makes a strong first impression. Choose something comfortable, but professional, for your new work environment.

You don’t have to crush all your goals or influence all your teammates on your first day. Just be present, and soak it all up.

Ask as many questions as you can, and carry a notebook to write down the answers. Pen and paper are obvious ways of showing you’re ready to learn. Typing on your phone, even if you’re taking notes, sends the wrong impression.

Make yourself available for lunch with coworkers on your first day. And hey, just because you’re the new kid on the block doesn’t mean&nbsp;you&nbsp;can’t extend the invitation. Going out to eat on your first day gives you one less thing to worry about at home—and it could lead to some productive conversations.

Walk around your new workspace and observe. Note the facilities, the layout, where the break room and fridge are, and where you can find a cup of coffee for your afternoon energy slumps. Also, take some time to settle into your own space.

You’re going to meet lots of new people. And yes, you’ll forget everyone’s names and have to ask them again. Don’t let that stop you from extending a firm handshake, offering a big smile, and being open and warm.

Everyone knows they should meet their leader the first week on the job. But I want you to be intentional about your early conversations with your leader. You should ask for crystal-clear clarity on what’s expected of you, so you can know your role, accept your role, and maximize your role. Ask your leader questions about their life outside work, too. This person is going to have a huge impact on your career, so start building your relationship now.

Most companies have an official organizational chart that explains the operating structure. Ask to see the org chart, and have your leader explain how it all works. Get a sense of how you fit into the big picture.

Company culture is the personality, beliefs, and values of the organization all rolled into one. Hopefully you did some digging into the culture during the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kencoleman.com/articles/job-interview-tips" target="_blank">interview process</a>, but now you get to see firsthand how it plays out day to day.

Take in as much information as possible before you start airing your own opinions. This is especially important if you’re stepping into a leadership position. You can’t start raising a ruckus and disrupting the culture until you’ve proven you’re worth following.

Connect with Human Resources to go over basic benefits questions. Here are a few topics you might want to discuss:

●Sick leave, paid time off and holidays. 

●Opportunities to get involved (softball league, anyone?)

The Crossroads Rock &amp; Rod Show, presented by Holm Buick GMC, is scheduled for Sept. 26 from 2-7 p.m. in the east parking lot of the Tony’s Pizza Events Center.

The event is set to feature classic cars, rat rods, customs and motorcycles from across the area, fun awards for registered vehicles, a stage with live music, and a beer garden. More details will be announced closer to the event date. Admission for spectators is free!

Registration for classic car and motorcycle owners is $25 per vehicle, and the first 100 registered vehicles will receive a dash plaque. Owners that pre-register their vehicles by Sept. 14 will also receive a t-shirt. Day-of-event registration will be available, but t-shirts and dash plaques may not be available.
