ELLSWORTH COUNTY -- One person was injured in an accident just before 7:30 p.m. Sunday in Ellsworth County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2003 Honda Odyssey driven by&nbsp; Christopher Andrew Lemon, 48, Maize, was eastbound on Interstate 70 just east of Kansas 14. 

The driver lost control when the van's rear right tire went flat. The van&nbsp; swerved into the median and overturned.&nbsp;

EMS transported&nbsp; Lemon to the hospital in Salina. Five passengers were not injured. All six were properly restrained at the time of the accident, according to the KHP.

There's a chance for rain late tonight into tomorrow in the area.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Wichita, chances of strong to severe storms will increase after midnight across the area. The strongest storms will be capable of quarter size hail, 60 mph wind gusts, and heavy rainfall, NWS noted.

Severe storms will be possible again tomorrow afternoon and evening. How the weather evolves tonight will influence whether or not storms develop tomorrow afternoon, NWS explained. If storms develop, the main threats will be golf ball size hail and damaging winds to 65 mph although a tornado can't be ruled out across southeast Kansas, according to NWS.

SFHC accredited by Assoc. of Diabetes Care & Education Specialists

UPDATE 3:40 p.m. Sunday: Kansas Bureau of Investigation agents and the Crime Scene Response Team (CSRT) are in Saline County at the request of the Salina Police Department (SPD) to investigate a multiple shooting scene incident that occurred early this morning.

The KBI noted that at approximately 2:30 a.m. Sunday, an SPD officer "observed a silver 2006 Lincoln Town Car that failed to stop at multiple stop signs. When the officer initiated a traffic stop on North Ninth St. in Thomas Park in Salina, the driver of the vehicle did not stop, and a pursuit began. An occupant of the Town Car fired multiple shots at the officer’s vehicle, and the officer was struck once in his foot."

The officer continued to pursue the Town Car north on North Ninth Street, then west on Pleasant Hill Road, and south on Halstead Road, the KBI, noted.

"The Saline County Sheriff’s Office and the Salina Police Department set up stop sticks near Halstead Rd. and I-70 in an effort to deflate the approaching vehicle’s tires. As they attempted to deploy the devices, an occupant of the vehicle fired at them. One police officer and one deputy returned fire. The vehicle’s tires were not deflated, and the chase continued," the KBI explained.

The driver lost control of the Town Car near the intersection of West Crawford Street and South Halstead Road and the vehicle crashed into a ditch. The subjects fled on foot. One of the subjects, a 37-year-old male from Wichita, was located in a nearby field and taken into custody, according to the KBI.

A search for the second suspect continued into Sunday afternoon. Based on information that the KBI developed, KHP troopers were able to locate the vehicle the 36-year-old man was traveling in after a Capitol police officer spotted the silver vehicle&nbsp; near the I-70 East Topeka Turnpike Interchange, according to office Jose Saucedo.

 KHP troopers made a felony stop on the Turnpike and took the man into custody without incident, according to the KBI.

"Based on information that the KBI developed, KHP troopers were able to locate the vehicle the 36-year-old man was traveling in. Then, at approximately 1 p.m. Sunday afternoon near the I-70 East Topeka Turnpike Interchange, KHP troopers stopped the vehicle and took the man into custody without incident," the KBI reported.

EMS transported the Salina Police officer to the Salina Regional Health Center for treatment. He is expected to fully recover.

Authorities released no additional details.

A Salina police officer was shot this morning during a chase that began in north Salina and one of two suspect remains at large.

According to information from the Salina Police Department (SPD), at 2:32 a.m. Sunday, a Salina police officer observed a vehicle failing to stop for multiple stops signs in north Salina. When the officer activated his emergency lights and siren to conduct a traffic stop, the vehicle fled. 

At the beginning of the pursuit, an occupant of the vehicle fired multiple gun shots at the pursuing police vehicle on North Ninth Street near Thomas Park. One of these rounds fired by the suspect struck the pursuing officer in his foot, the SPD information noted.

The vehicle pursuit left the Salina city limits on North Ninth Street and West Pleasant Hill Road with two Salina police officers pursuing the vehicle, according to the SPD information.

During the pursuit in Saline County, officers and Saline County Sheriff's deputies attempted to set up vehicle tire deflating devices in front of the fleeing vehicle. They, too, were fired upon by occupants of the fleeing vehicle while attempting to place these tire deflating devices on North Halstead Road near Interstate 70, SPD reported. Both the deputy and the officer returned fire.

A 2:40 a.m., the fleeing vehicle left the roadway in the area of West Crawford and South Halstead Road and crashed, SPD noted. The occupants of the vehicle fled from the vehicle. One occupant, a 37-year-old male from Wichita, was located hiding in a nearby field and taken into custody and a second suspect is still at large, according to information from SPD.

The SPD, the Saline County Sheriff’s Office, Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI), and the Kansas Highway Patrol have multiple personnel at the scene and are actively looking for the additional suspect who is believed to be armed and extremely dangerous.

The Salina police officer who was shot was transported to the Salina Regional Health Center by a Salina Fire Department EMS unit. He is presently in stable condition and it is anticipated he will make a full recovery, SPD reported.

The KBI has been called in to take over the investigation regarding this officer involved shooting, SPD noted.

NWS: Patchy dense fog possible over part of area

The thank-you note came from the office of former President George W. Bush, expressing appreciation for the wonderful pork rinds provided by this remarkable business. &nbsp;

Thaddeus and Kelly Perry are owners and founders of Perry’s Pork Rinds in Bronson.&nbsp;&nbsp;They grew up in southeast Kansas, married and moved to Bronson to be near family.

Thaddeus, a butcher, would occasionally fry pork rinds in the backyard as a hobby. Kelly remembered delicious pork rinds from the Ozarks.&nbsp;

When Kelly and Thaddeus wanted to earn some extra money for a cruise, they decided to sell pork rinds and funnel cakes at an upcoming fair in Missouri. &nbsp;

They looked online for seasonings and USDA-inspected pork rinds, borrowed a kettle, and set up a tent at the fair. Then a thunderstorm came through and ruined any chance of cooking. “I cried,” Kelly said. “But my husband is the hardest-working guy I know.&nbsp;&nbsp;After the storm passed, he cooked more pork rinds all night long.”&nbsp;

The pork rinds were a big hit. Kelly and Thaddeus were soon headed to his niece’s wedding in Manhattan and she posted on Facebook about the few bags of pork rinds they had remaining. When she checked messages after the wedding, she realized the rinds were in high demand. “We sold all we had left and paid for our cruise in full,” Kelly said.&nbsp;

Kelly and Thaddeus set up their own LLC as Perry’s Pork Rinds in September 2017. “We haven’t stopped since,” Kelly said.&nbsp;

“Several customers were interested in nutritional facts so we contacted Dr. Elizabeth Boyle and Dr. Fadi at K-State. They were so helpful with our nutrition labeling,” Kelly said. The Perrys also joined the Kansas Department of Agriculture’s From the Land of Kansas program.&nbsp;

“We use soybean oil and we heat it to just over 400 degrees,” Thaddeus said. “Soybean oil is a heart-healthy oil and it smells better than lard,” Kelly said. “We hand-season them. Our pork rinds are unique flavors, a very fresh, light crunch that’s not hard, a really good, low-carb snack option,” she said.&nbsp;

Perry’s Pork Rinds now offers this tasty snack in 10 flavors and three seasonal ones. “Everything we do is because we listen to our customers,” Kelly said. “I would post different flavors on Facebook and ask our customers to vote on them,” she said.&nbsp;

Today, Perry’s Pork Rinds come as original, spicy, ranch, barbecue, cinnamon sugar, sour cream &amp; onion, cheddar cheese, chili cheese, chili lime, and garlic parmesan. (Is your mouth watering yet?) Product sales got another boost when posted on the Shop Kansas Farms Facebook page. Sales boomed and two full-time employees were hired.&nbsp;

Kelly likes to experiment with recipes using pork rinds. “I made a bacon, jalapeño,&nbsp;cheddar-cheese, pork-rind meatloaf,” she said. “Anything that calls for breadcrumbs, you can use pork rinds for. They’re great in chili, taco salad, and other dishes,” she said. “It’s more than just a snack, it can help make a family meal,” Kelly said.&nbsp;

Perry’s Pork Rinds have gone to all 50 states plus Canada and as far away as Saudi Arabia. The office of former President Bush ordered products and sent a complimentary thank-you note afterward.&nbsp;

Sales in 2019 were up 328%. Perry’s Pork Rinds was named the Kansas Department of Commerce Minority-Owned Business of the Year in Sales and Distribution.&nbsp;

The Perrys plan to open the Famous Perry’s Pork Rind Country Store and production facility in a new building along Highway 54 at the site of a former gas station. This will feature other Kansas products including in-house made fudge, saltwater taffy, jerky, smoked cheese, popcorn and more.&nbsp;

That’s exciting to see in a rural community like Bronson, population 323 people. Now, that’s rural.&nbsp;

Bush, expressing appreciation for the wonderful pork rinds provided by this remarkable business. &nbsp;Thaddeus and Kelly Perry are owners and founders of Perry’s Pork Rinds in Bronson.&nbsp;&nbsp;They grew up in southeast Kansas, married and moved to Bronson to be near family. Thaddeus, a butcher, would occasionally fry pork rinds in the backyard as a hobby. Kelly remembered delicious pork rinds from the Ozarks.&nbsp;When Kelly and Thaddeus wanted to earn some extra money for a cruise, they decided to sell pork rinds and funnel cakes at an upcoming fair in Missouri. &nbsp;They looked online for seasonings and USDA-inspected pork rinds, borrowed a kettle, and set up a tent at the fair. Then a thunderstorm came through and ruined any chance of cooking. “I cried,” Kelly said. “But my husband is the hardest-working guy I know.&nbsp;&nbsp;After the storm passed, he cooked more pork rinds all night long.”&nbsp;The pork rinds were a big hit. Kelly and Thaddeus were soon headed to his niece’s wedding in Manhattan and she posted on Facebook about the few bags of pork rinds they had remaining. When she checked messages after the wedding, she realized the rinds were in high demand. “We sold all we had left and paid for our cruise in full,” Kelly said.&nbsp;<figure>

 </figure>Kelly and Thaddeus set up their own LLC as Perry’s Pork Rinds in September 2017. “We haven’t stopped since,” Kelly said.&nbsp;“Several customers were interested in nutritional facts so we contacted Dr. Elizabeth Boyle and Dr. Fadi at K-State. They were so helpful with our nutrition labeling,” Kelly said. The Perrys also joined the Kansas Department of Agriculture’s From the Land of Kansas program.&nbsp;“We use soybean oil and we heat it to just over 400 degrees,” Thaddeus said. “Soybean oil is a heart-healthy oil and it smells better than lard,” Kelly said. “We hand-season them. Our pork rinds are unique flavors, a very fresh, light crunch that’s not hard, a really good, low-carb snack option,” she said.&nbsp;Perry’s Pork Rinds now offers this tasty snack in 10 flavors and three seasonal ones. “Everything we do is because we listen to our customers,” Kelly said. “I would post different flavors on Facebook and ask our customers to vote on them,” she said.&nbsp;Today, Perry’s Pork Rinds come as original, spicy, ranch, barbecue, cinnamon sugar, sour cream &amp; onion, cheddar cheese, chili cheese, chili lime, and garlic parmesan. (Is your mouth watering yet?) Product sales got another boost when posted on the Shop Kansas Farms Facebook page. Sales boomed and two full-time employees were hired.&nbsp;Kelly likes to experiment with recipes using pork rinds. “I made a bacon, jalapeño,&nbsp;cheddar-cheese, pork-rind meatloaf,” she said. “Anything that calls for breadcrumbs, you can use pork rinds for. They’re great in chili, taco salad, and other dishes,” she said. “It’s more than just a snack, it can help make a family meal,” Kelly said.&nbsp;Perry’s Pork Rinds have gone to all 50 states plus Canada and as far away as Saudi Arabia. The office of former President Bush ordered products and sent a complimentary thank-you note afterward.&nbsp;Sales in 2019 were up 328%. Perry’s Pork Rinds was named the Kansas Department of Commerce Minority-Owned Business of the Year in Sales and Distribution.&nbsp;The Perrys plan to open the Famous Perry’s Pork Rind Country Store and production facility in a new building along Highway 54 at the site of a former gas station. Year-long study helps identify varieties ideal for dual-purpose system&nbsp;

MANHATTAN – Kansas State University researchers have released findings of a study to identify the best-performing varieties when producers are growing wheat for grain and grazing, known as a dual-purpose system.&nbsp;

K-State Research and Extension wheat specialist Romulo Lollato said he and his colleagues tested 28 wheat varieties at the South Central Experiment Field near Hutchinson – simulating grazing the crop in the winter and early spring and harvesting grain in the summer&nbsp;–&nbsp;to determine how the performance of different wheat varieties compared when managed under the dual-purpose system versus a grain-only system.&nbsp;

Their results are now available in a&nbsp;<a href="https://bookstore.ksre.ksu.edu/pubs/MF3312.pdf" target="_blank">publication available from the K-State Research and Extension bookstore</a>.&nbsp;

“The three most important things that we need to keep in mind when selecting a wheat variety for a dual purpose system are fall forage production, the date of the first hollow stem and how varieties respond to grazing stress,” Lollato said.&nbsp;

The yield potential of fall forage is important because it affects the potential beef production from cattle grazing wheat in the fall, winter and spring. Lollato said approximately 100 pounds of beef can be produced for every 1,000 pounds of dry matter, wheat forage production in an acre.&nbsp;

The date of the first hollow stem will determine when producers should stop grazing cattle. Grazing past the first hollow stem can decrease the following spring’s wheat yield by as much as 1% to 5% per day, Lollato said.&nbsp;

How well wheat varieties respond to stress often shows up in its’ grain yield following grazing, as compared to the ungrazed counterparts.&nbsp;

“The recovery of wheat varieties from grazing is very specific to the variety,” Lollato said.&nbsp;

He said that one trend researchers found in their study is that wheat yields in a grain-only system might not necessarily indicate how a variety would stack up in a dual-purpose system.&nbsp;

“What we saw this year is typically what we see year in and year out,” Lollato said. “Sometimes in the dual purpose situation, we have different varieties showing up toward the top (of the wheat yield rankings). The potential to bounce back from grazing is showing up whenever we look at the ranking of those varieties in the dual purpose situation.”&nbsp;

For example, Lollato said a few varieties were among the top yielding group in both grazed and ungrazed scenarios, including Rock Star (a Polansky variety) and two Westbred varieties, WB4269 and WB4699.&nbsp;

“When evaluating the grazed plus grain group only, other varieties, including a few from Oklahoma State University, also appeared in the top yielding group, showing that those varieties might be better suited for the dual-purpose system,” he said.&nbsp;

LINDSBORG -- While the COVID-19 situation dashed dreams and cancelled plans for many members of the Bethany community, students Zephra Rice and Antonia Waggoner saw an opportunity to help people in need. 

Working together on a relative’s farmland, Rice and Waggoner started a garden plot with the hopes of donating the produce to the local food bank. 

These amateur gardeners brought in a bountiful harvest, producing and donating what Rice estimates as “three cases of a couple hundred yellow, teardrop cherry tomatoes…20 acorn squash, ten butternut squash, four spaghetti squash, 30 red onions, 30 radishes, 30 big boy tomatoes, and…more tomatoes on the way!” 

They also harvested a handful of beans before the rabbits ate them all. 

Families struggling with food insecurity had fresh produce this summer, thanks to the efforts of these Bethany students.

The plan and funds to start a garden grew out of an experience Rice enjoyed with other students in December when Dr. Arminta Fox, director of the Varenhorst Center and assistant professor of religion, and Professor Andrea Ring, associate professor of psychology, led Bethany students in hosting a Christmas Party for residents of Ashby House&nbsp; in Salina. This experience was designed to extend the learning of the course to practical applications with families in poverty and was made possible through a CIC/NetVUE Program Development Grant of $50,000 that Bethany College received in May of 2019 to strengthen vocational exploration. 

The Ashby House trip was one of nine intended for the two-year grant period. Additional trips to worship sites in Wichita, to Heartland School, and to a Congressional session in Topeka, scheduled for late March 2020, were postponed due to the pandemic. Yet, even in the midst of hardship and rabbits, new life can take root and lead to abundance, as Rice and Waggoner have demonstrated.&nbsp;

LINDSBORG -- While the COVID-19 situation dashed dreams and cancelled plans for many members of the Bethany community, students Zephra Rice and Antonia Waggoner saw an opportunity to help people in need. Working together on a relative’s farmland, Rice and Waggoner started a garden plot with the hopes of donating the produce to the local food bank. These amateur gardeners brought in a bountiful harvest, producing and donating what Rice estimates as “three cases of a couple hundred yellow, teardrop cherry tomatoes…20 acorn squash, ten butternut squash, four spaghetti squash, 30 red onions, 30 radishes, 30 big boy tomatoes, and…more tomatoes on the way!” They also harvested a handful of beans before the rabbits ate them all. Families struggling with food insecurity had fresh produce this summer, thanks to the efforts of these Bethany students. The plan and funds to start a garden grew out of an experience Rice enjoyed with other students in December when Dr. Arminta Fox, director of the Varenhorst Center and assistant professor of religion, and Professor Andrea Ring, associate professor of psychology, led Bethany students in hosting a Christmas Party for residents of Ashby House&nbsp; in Salina. This experience was designed to extend the learning of the course to practical applications with families in poverty and was made possible through a CIC/NetVUE Program Development Grant of $50,000 that Bethany College received in May of 2019 to strengthen vocational exploration. The Ashby House trip was one of nine intended for the two-year grant period. Additional trips to worship sites in Wichita, to Heartland School, and to a Congressional session in Topeka, scheduled for late March 2020, were postponed due to the pandemic. Recent obituaries

Marches, protests and demonstrations, on the street or now online, are how the United States talks to itself. And, to the benefit of the nation, we are doing a lot of talking these days.

Propelled and protected by the First Amendment freedoms of speech, assembly and petition, we have taken to the streets today and in the past to call the country to consider national challenges and solve national inequities, to press for change or to voice opposition to policies, plans and practices.

Our next national moment: Friday, Aug. 28, the planned commemoration of the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. It could not come at a more appropriate time.

If 2020 is to be remembered for more than the COVID-19 pandemic, it will be as a year in which our fellow citizens — and, very often, those among us who see themselves as outside the majority in one way or another — demanded to be heard in matters of freedom and social justice and, even more, demanded more loudly than ever to see positive change as a result.

The planned commemorations will include&nbsp;Rep. John Lewis, the youngest speaker at the ’63 event and all but certain to be the patron-in-absentia for the event and others now planned:

The marches, however they mesh, will be about more than memories. Some will be demonstrating that day against continuing police brutality targeting Black citizens or other people of color. Others will press for major reforms in policing and funding for police overall, and for sentencing and prison reform.

Consider for a moment the lasting impact of the critical moment of the 1963 march, when&nbsp;Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his historic “I Have a Dream” speech, with words that have resounded through the years.

King’s speech, some 10 minutes longer than the six minutes he was allotted, didn’t include its memorable title until gospel singer&nbsp;Mahalia Jackson, recalling earlier King speeches as she stood behind him at the podium on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, said to him, “Tell ’em about the dream, Martin, tell ’em about the dream!”

Setting aside his prepared remarks, King told an estimated 150,000 at the memorial and nearby Reflecting Pool that “ … even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream … that … we will be able to speed up that day when all God’s children, Black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics, will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old Negro spiritual, ‘Free at last! Free at last! Thank God Almighty, we are free at last!’”

It may not be a focus of this year’s commemorations, but the march 57 years ago was rooted in a similar event planned but not held more than two decades earlier. In 1941,&nbsp;A. Philip Randolph, founder of the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters labor union, called for a march on Washington, D.C., to protest exclusion of Black workers from defense industry jobs. In return for cancelling that event, Randolph gained an executive order issued by&nbsp;President Franklin D. Roosevelt&nbsp;forming the Fair Employment Practices Commission to investigate racial discrimination in the national defense industry.

Lest we forget, commemorations around the 1963 march likely won’t be the only calls for a “redress of grievances” on that day. Ongoing national protests include groups opposing each other in public over COVID-19-related issues — back-to-school plans, government orders to wear face coverings in public, the renewal of limits on store hours or openings, restrictions on worship services and social public gatherings, even the very nature and extent of the pandemic itself.

The breadth of current public outcries may be surprising, but the depth of emotion behind them shouldn’t be — protest is backed into the nation’s civic DNA: From pre-revolutionary times, when colonials took to cobblestone streets to protest taxes and British rule, to rallies and marches by pro- and anti-slavery advocates in the early- to mid-1800s; from anti-draft demonstrations during the Civil War to a decade of anti-war rallies during the Vietnam War; from suffragette marches in the late 1800s and early 1900s to the ERA battles of the 1970s; from marches that led to a Prohibition amendment in 1920 to marches that led to its repeal in 1933; from white-robed Ku Klux Klan demonstrations across the nation peaking in the 1920s to the civil rights movement peaking in the 1960s; to the LGBTQ movement, from Stonewall in 1969 to recent demonstrations over marriage laws and employment equality.

“We Protest” may well stand next to “In God We Trust” as a national motto. Certainly, the founders saw those core freedoms of speech, assembly and petition as central to keeping the nation safe from the “tyranny of the majority,” where minority voices and calls for change were stifled before having any real chance to produce reforms or form a new majority, seen all-too often in the European nations of their time.

There’s no guarantee under the First Amendment that when America talks to itself, Americans will listen. But our history is marked by those moments when as a nation we do hear, sometimes belatedly, what protesters, demonstrators and marchers are saying. And we are a fairer, more honest, more just country as a result.

As King said in his last public speech in 1968, nearly five years after the March on Washington: “Somewhere I read of the freedom of assembly. Somewhere I read of the freedom of speech. Somewhere I read of the freedom of press. Somewhere I read that the greatness of America is the right to protest for right.”

March on, citizens, on Aug. 28 and the days after. Use your freedoms.

FIRST 5: We march, demonstrate and protest; we're America

Twenty-One new law enforcement officers graduated from the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center (KLETC) on Friday at a ceremony held in KLETC’s Integrity Auditorium.&nbsp;

Tyler Stephenson of the Baldwin City Police Department was the graduating class president. Rob McClarty, KLETC Instructor of Police and Class Coordinator for the 267th Basic Training Class, was the speaker for the ceremony.

Class president Stephenson was named to the Director’s Honor Roll and was also the recipient of the Welch Academic Award. Deputy Chandler Ford from the Mead County Sheriff’s Office and Logan Higbee from the Beloit Police Department were acknowledged for having shot 100% on their firearms qualification, with Officer Higbee being recognized as the class “Top Shot.”

McClarty also singled out students Logan Higbee, Levi Chermak, Austin Sievert, Tyler Stephenson, Shawn Hyde, Tanner Houck, Blake Stromgren and Chandler Ford for assisting a motorist who’s car had flipped. The students were en route to Cheney on their downtime when they noticed the overturned vehicle. They worked together to ensure that not only was the motorist safe, but that the area was safe as well. The students tended to the motorist and controlled traffic until the Reno County EMS, Pretty Prairie Fire Department, and Kansas Highway Patrol arrived on the scene.&nbsp;

Graduates receive certificates of course completion from KLETC and Kansas law enforcement certification from the Kansas Commission on Peace Officers’ Standards and Training, the state’s law enforcement licensing authority. The training course fulfills the state requirement for law enforcement training. Classroom lectures and hands-on applications help train officers to solve the increasingly complex problems they face in the line of duty.

Established by the Kansas Legislature in 1968, KLETC trains the majority of municipal, county and state law enforcement officers in Kansas and oversees the training of the remaining officers at seven authorized and certified academy programs operated by local law enforcement agencies and the Kansas Highway Patrol.

About 300 officers enroll annually in KLETC 14-week basic training programs. KLETC offers continuing education and specialized training to over 10,000 Kansas officers each year. KLETC is located one mile west and one mile south of Yoder, near Hutchinson, and is a division of University of Kansas Professional &amp; Continuing Education.

The graduates, who began their training in February 2020, represented 15 municipal, county and state law enforcement agencies from across Kansas. Graduates who granted permission to release their names are listed below by county and agency:
