President Obama crossed the Arctic Circle in a first by a sitting U.S. president, telling residents in the far-flung Alaska village of Kotzebue that their plight resulting from climate change should be the world's wake-up call on global warming. In one of the most haunting images from the Syrian migrant crisis, the lifeless body of 3-year-old Alan Kurdi was photographed lying on a Turkish beach after he, his 5-year-old brother and their mother died when their rubber boat capsized as it headed for Greece.

One year ago: A fire swept a boat carrying recreational scuba divers that was anchored near an island off the Southern California coast; the captain and four other crew members were able to escape the flames, but 34 people who were trapped below died. Hurricane Dorian unleashed massive flooding across the Bahamas as the fearsome Category 4 storm slowed almost to a standstill; the storm would leave at least 70 people dead and cause more than $3 billion in damage.

LAWRENCE — The names of more than 4,700 graduates from the University of Kansas this spring — representing 87 Kansas counties; 49 other states, territories, and Washington, D.C.; and 53 other countries — have been announced by the University Registrar.&nbsp;

Many spring and summer 2020 graduates celebrated their accomplishments as part of the virtual&nbsp;2020 commencement.&nbsp;Names of summer 2020 graduates will be published in the fall, and not all graduates elect to have their names published by KU News Service.

The university is&nbsp;planning an in-person&nbsp;<a href="https://chancellor.ku.edu/news/2020/jul29" target="_blank">commencement event</a>&nbsp;in May 2021 for the Class of 2020.

University of Kansas announces spring 2020 graduates

An officer with the Salina Police Department who was shot in the foot during a pursuit Sunday has been released from the hospital.

According to a post on the <a href="https://www.facebook.com/SalinaKSPD/">Salina Police Department</a> Facebook page, Officer Cody Way was released from Salina Regional Health Center this morning.

"His surgery went well and we are anticipaing (praying for) a full recovery!" the SPD Facebook post noted.

Way was shot while pursuing a 2006 Lincoln Town Car that failed to stop at multiple stop signs and ignored Way's attempt to stop the vehicle. An occupant of the Town Car fired multiple shots at Way's vehicle and one struck him in the foot.

Despite being shot, he continued to pursue the vehicle on North Ninth Street as other law enforcement personnel began joining in the attempt to stop the car. The pursuit went north out of the city limits, turned west, and then back south. 

The driver lost control of the Town Car near the intersection of West Crawford Street and South Halstead Road and the vehicle crashed into a ditch, at which point the subjects fled on foot. One of the subjects, a 37-year-old male from Wichita, was located in a nearby field and taken into custody, according to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI). The other suspect, a 36-year-old male, was apprehended later in the day on the Kansas Turnpike near the Interstate 70 East Topeka Turnpike Interchange, the KBI reported. 

The names of the suspects will not be released until they are charged in the case, the KBI told Salina Post earlier today.

Celebrations are meant to commemorate something special—a birthday, an anniversary, or a new job. While it might not seem that exciting, I want to open your eyes to the fact that if you have a 401(k), that’s also something worth celebrating. 401(k)s give you great tax advantages, but they vary depending on which type of account you have:

The Roth 401(k)&nbsp;allows you to invest after-tax dollars, which doesn’t give you a tax break immediately. However, you get to enjoy tax-free perks during retirement. When you start withdrawing money penalty-free at age 59 1/2, you get to keep every single penny of the money you’ve put into that account.

According to information from the district, elementary students will be on-site every day and grades 6-12 will continue hybrid beginning Sept. 8, 2020. This change is based upon gating criteria released by the Saline County Health Department, the district noted. 

The change will take place on Sept. 8 because school will not be in session on Monday due to the Labor Day holiday.

The <a href="https://www.usd305.com/connect2learn/gating_criteria">gating criteria</a>, applied to USD 305, can be found on the district <a href="http://usd305.com">website</a>. The webpage names the learning model under which USD 305 will operate.

“Our families are working to balance keeping their children safe and learning while they maintain jobs,” said Linn Exline, superintendent. “We know it is important for them to have as much notice as possible before moving to a different learning environment.” 

The district sent an email and text to parents informing them of the announcement.

Any future changes to the district’s learning model will depend upon the guidance from the Salina County Health Department and the status of COVID-19.

USD 305: Change to mode of learning

The Saline County Commission voted this morning to extend for another year the contract of County Administrator Phillip Smith-Hanes.

That action came after one of three executive sessions conducted by the commission this morning. The other two executive sessions were to discuss non-elected personnel and employee/employer negotiations.

“We are lucky that Mr. Smith-Hanes joined our staff and his leadership has been invaluable,” Commission Chair Robert Vidricksen said.

During this morning's regular commission meeting Smith-Hanes reminded commissioners that they are scheduled to meet with Salina City Commissioners to hear from staff concerning a vendor recommendation for the emergency radio communications project. The meeting is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Sept. 8 in the Visit Salina Annex, 120 West Ash Street.

Additionally, Smith-Hanes told commissioners that Saline County submitted its reimbursement and direct aid plans for the Coronavirus Relief Funding on Aug. 14 and on Friday state personnel indicated that they anticipate having answers to approval of county plans by this&nbsp;week. Staff has been in contact with the agencies that were selected to receive funding from the county to ensure all appropriate paperwork is on hand before funds are transferred to them, he noted.

Smith-Hanes also told commissioners that staff members had been working on  informational flyers and other items for outreach to the community regarding the jail project and the upcoming ballot question for the Nov. 3 general election.

Other business on today's county agenda includes the following.

Darren Fishel, Road and Bridge director, provided his department update for July and August. Several activities were completed including the replacement of 13 crossroad culverts, reshaping of a graveled road, repair of two bridges and three box culverts, ditch cleaning, and repair or replacement of 271 signs, Fishel said. Additionally, county-wide pavement marking (striping) has begun. Over the next few months, the department plans to replace 30 culverts and rebuild the roads in Sundowner West, he noted.

Commissioners nominated Commissioner Rodger Sparks as the primary and Commissioner Monte Shadwick as the alternate voting delegate to represent Saline County at the Kansas Workers Risk Cooperative for Counties annual meeting that will be held virtually after the Kansas Association of Counties Conference.

The meeting is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Sept. 8 in the Visit Salina Annex, 120 West Ash Street.Additionally, Smith-Hanes told commissioners that Saline County submitted its reimbursement and direct aid plans for the Coronavirus Relief Funding on Aug. 14 and on Friday state personnel indicated that they anticipate having answers to approval of county plans by this&nbsp;week. Staff has been in contact with the agencies that were selected to receive funding from the county to ensure all appropriate paperwork is on hand before funds are transferred to them, he noted.Smith-Hanes also told commissioners that staff members had been working on informational flyers and other items for outreach to the community regarding the jail project and the upcoming ballot question for the Nov. 3 general election.Other business on today's county agenda includes the following.Darren Fishel, Road and Bridge director, provided his department update for July and August. Several activities were completed including the replacement of 13 crossroad culverts, reshaping of a graveled road, repair of two bridges and three box culverts, ditch cleaning, and repair or replacement of 271 signs, Fishel said. Additionally, county-wide pavement marking (striping) has begun. Over the next few months, the department plans to replace 30 culverts and rebuild the roads in Sundowner West, he noted.Commissioners nominated Commissioner Rodger Sparks as the primary and Commissioner Monte Shadwick as the alternate voting delegate to represent Saline County at the Kansas Workers Risk Cooperative for Counties annual meeting that will be held virtually after the Kansas Association of Counties Conference.

Commission extends county administrator's contract

The Salina Area Chamber of Commerce has announced the hiring of Renee Duxler as economic and workforce development director. 

In this role, she will lead the chamber’s economic and workforce development department and the implementation of the Imagine Salina program of work. Imagine Salina focuses on two overarching initiatives; they are workforce development and business expansion and retention support.

Most recently she served as the executive director for the Douglas Design District in Wichita, where she participated in urban planning and its effect on economic opportunity and development, civic pride and engagement, talent recruitment and retention, and community connectivity and access. She also has served on the Wichita-Sedgwick County Metropolitan Planning Commission and was a 2019 graduate of Leadership Wichita. In addition, Duxler has experience in non-profit management and leadership, policy, and public relations.

Duxler grew up in McPherson, received her undergraduate degree from Kansas State University and a master's degree from Newman University. She and her partner, Mark Anderson, are bringing with them three children ages 10, 12 and 14, and a border collie rescue named Scout.

“Renee possesses a wide breadth of experience to our organization and community. Her experience in community building, strategizing, and talent recruitment and retention are perfect fits for the Chamber’s Imagine Salina initiative.” said Eric L. The Salina Area United Way (SAUW) has announced that its 2020-2021 annual campaign kick-off will be a combination virtual and come-and-go event.

The kickoff is scheduled for 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Sept. 22, according to information provided by SAUW.

The theme for the 2020-2021 annual campaign is “Building Bridges: Yesterday, Today, &amp; Tomorrow.” The campaign has a goal to raise $550,000.

This year’s kickoff will include a virtual event and a come-and-go event at the SAUW office, 210 East Walnut Street, Suite 100. Interested persons will be able to stream the event via the SAUW Facebook page and YouTube or join the staff and board of directors at the SAUW office.

The event will have virtual and in-person interviews with community partner directors, board members, and more.  3B’s BBQ Food Truck will be located at the SAUW office from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“We know this is a crucial time for our community and we want to be there to support them.  To reach our goal of $550,000 would be tremendous for our community partners especially during these tough times,” said Claire Mullen, executive director. “By starting the COVID-19 Relief Fund, we stepped up as a leader for our community and we want to continue on that same path with our annual campaign.”

Local United Way announces campaign kickoff, goal

Salina police are looking for a known suspect in an aggravated assault and battery that occurred early this morning.

Officers were dispatched to a residence in the 700 block of East Elm shortly after 2 a.m. Tuesday for the report of a disturbance, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester reported this morning.

According to Forrester, a 40-year-old Salina woman and a 43-year-old Salina man were sitting in a 2004 Dodge Durango when the woman's ex-boyfriend drove by in a tan 2006 Chevrolet Silverado pickup. The subject drove by several times, once swerving at the Durango without striking it, Forrester noted. He then turned around and was traveling eastbound and swerved and struck the vehicle with his pickup, Forrester added.

"The Durango suffered major driver side damage and was pushed up onto the easement. The pickup had the right front tire torn off the vehicle. The truck after striking the Durango continued and struck an AT&amp;T utility box, and then a fence in the yard of 259 N. Penn," Forrester reported.

The driver of the Silverado threatened the man and woman before fleeing the scene, Forrester noted.

Forrester stressed that the subject is a known person and the incident is not a random act.

Kajsa Erickson, 31, of Solomon, reported that sometime on Saturday or Sunday someone stole her light blue 2004 Buick LeSabre from the 2900 block of South Simpson Road, Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said this morning.

Erickson told police that she had gone to an event and had the key on a lanyard, but at some point lost the key, he said. 

Various items that were in the car also are missing. Those items include a couple of tool boxes with miscellaneous tools, a Milwaukee impact wrench, and a Mossberg 12 gauge shotgun, Soldan said.

The car, valued at $1,500, had a small dent in the right front fender and an NRA sticker on the bottom left of the windshield, he said.

Total loss is estimated at $2,185, Soldan added.
