Eagle Radio Salina hosts blood drive

The Saline County Health Department, Salina Family Healthcare Center, and Salina Regional Health Center have partnered to meet the significant demand for COVID-19 vaccinations for Phase 1 and Phase 2 populations.

The group has set up a temporary vaccination location at the former JC Penney site in the south end of the Central Mall. This singular location will help increase the efficient administration of as many vaccine doses as possible in the least amount of time. Currently, the county is still in Phase 1: vaccinations of healthcare workers, long-term care employees and patients, and EMS. There are five total phases, as shown in the graphic.

Currently, only Phase 1 is being scheduled and SFHC has already been in contact with all eligible healthcare workers. It is anticipated that Phase 1 will last through the end of January. A scheduling website will be available to handle vaccination appointments for eligible individuals. All communications about scheduled appointments will come from SFHC and their healthcare platform, Athena.

Many primary clinics in the area should also begin receiving their own COVID vaccine supply to help vaccinate their own patients during later Phases. The timing of this is uncertain.

When Phase 2 begins, more information will be released concerning the scheduling of appointments through the website. Please do not come to the vaccination site without an appointment and/or outside of your vaccination group.

Currently, partners in the county vaccination effort are being overwhelmed with calls from those outside of the Phase 1 group. This places an excess burden on an already stressed healthcare system. Information will be released about Phase 2 as soon as it is available.

Former Salina attorney new magistrate judge in Geary County

More than $3,100 worth of items were stolen from a Salina residence earlier this week.

Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester reported this morning that officers were sent to the 100 block of North Broadway Boulevard for the report of a burglary. According to Forrester, a witness saw two subjects with flashlights in the yard of the residence at approximately 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. They appeared to be jump starting a car, he added.

On Thursday, the witness realized that a piece of plywood had been removed from the door of a shed on the property, Forrester noted. The victim, Larry Mattison, 71, of Salina, went to the property and discovered that a 1983 Honda 50 cc motorcycle, valued at $1,000, with KS 32CUP tag, was missing, Forrester explained. 

Additionally, Anaili Fleites, 21, of Salina, who rents the residence, reported that her 2009 Nissan Versa had been broken into and a JBL stereo, JBL amplifier, JBL subwoofer, with a total value of $2,100, were missing. Additionally, a Goodyear tire and Cosco child seat, with a total value of $90, also were stolen, he noted.

Thieves steal multiple items from Salina residence

TOPEKA –&nbsp;The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has issued a boil water advisory for&nbsp;USD 306 Southeast Saline School, located in Saline County. This advisory is not related to COVID-19.

Customers should observe the following precautions until further notice:

●If your tap water appears dirty, flush the water lines by letting the water run until it clears.

●Boil water for one minute prior to drinking or food preparation or use bottled water.

●Dispose of ice cubes and do not use ice from a household automatic ice maker.

●Disinfect dishes and other food contact surfaces by immersion for at least one minute in clean tap water that contains one teaspoon of unscented household bleach per gallon of water.

●Water used for bathing does not generally need to be boiled. Supervision of children is necessary while bathing so that water is not ingested. Persons with cuts or severe rashes may wish to consult their physicians.

The advisory took effect on January 15, 2021 and will remain in effect until the conditions that placed the system at risk of bacterial contamination are resolved. KDHE issued the advisory because of a loss of pressure in the system due to an equipment failure. A failure to maintain adequate pressure can lead to a loss of chlorine residuals and bacterial contamination.

Regardless of whether the public water supplier or KDHE announced a boil water advisory, only KDHE can issue the rescind order following testing at a certified laboratory.

On Dec. 13, 2020, a Salina resident left his/her debit card in the ATM at the Kwik Shop, 2003 South Ohio Street. Afterward, the debit card was used at various retail establishments in Salina, including Hillside Liquor on Dec. 13, 2020 at 7:13 p.m.

At Hillside Liquor, a person using the card purchased more than $85 in liquor.

The person who used the card was described as a dark complected male wearing a black hooded sweatshirt with, "I love NY" on the chest and arms. The male was wearing a mask, dark hat, and black athletic pants with a red stripe. The male purchased a bottle of D'usse Cognac, and a bottle of Patron Tequila.

We just started teaching our seven-year-old about money. He’s very eager to learn, and he seems to be grasping the basic ideas quickly. He’s young, though, and of course he makes mistakes from time to time. Should we step in and fix things when a mistake he made means he can’t do something he wanted to do?

It’s always hard on parents when they see their&nbsp;<a href="https://www.daveramsey.com/askdave/relationships-and-money/deciding-what-the-kids-need-to-know" target="_blank">children</a>&nbsp;suffer because of a choice the child made. But sometimes it’s best to love them so much that you’ll let them make mistakes, and make sure they learn from them, while they’re still under your protection. Reality can be a great teacher when it comes to learning how the world works, and sometimes one sting from a bad decision when you’re young is all it takes to teach a kid a lesson that will last a lifetime.

<a href="https://www.daveramsey.com/askdave/debt/parents-need-to-parent" target="_blank">As a parent</a>, you’re always looking for teachable moments. First, make sure you’re giving him a chance to earn some money. That means&nbsp;work, no allowances. We’re talking about kid-sized, age-appropriate tasks. There’s a ton of value and self-esteem that go hand-in-hand with being paid for a job well done. Once you pay him for the work he does, then you have chances for more teachable moments about saving, spending, and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.daveramsey.com/blog/give-a-little-until-you-can-give-a-lot" target="_blank">giving</a>—and the importance of each.

If I were you, I wouldn’t run in and fix things. By this, I mean I wouldn’t just hand him money he didn’t earn so he can still get or do what he had in mind. But don’t fuss at him or brush it off, either. Gently explain why things didn’t work out the way he hoped. Then, talk through what he might have done differently to help make the situation better next time.

Kids are smarter and often have more understanding and comprehension skills than we give them credit for. My guess, Ethan, is you won’t need to have this kind of conversation more than once or twice!

MANHATTAN – Kansas State University officials have announced that the annual Winter Ranch Management series, slated to begin in late January, will highlight several topics important to beef cattle producers.&nbsp;

Hosted by three areas across the state of Kansas, the meetings feature presentations and comments by K-State Research and Extension educators and faculty in the Department of Animal Sciences and Industry to enhance management strategies employed by cow-calf producers.&nbsp;

“Our extension team has a breadth of experience in beef cattle management, reproduction, genetics, animal health and nutrition,” said beef cattle specialist Dale Blasi. “We’re here to help solve and prevent production problems with reliable information.”&nbsp;

Planned topics of discussion include bull management, nutrition and vaccine storage. The meetings will also feature a “town hall” style question-and-answer session between Kansas cattle producers and extension specialists.&nbsp;

“The series has a history of being a successful stretch of meetings, which are hosted throughout the state of Kansas,” Blasi said.&nbsp;

Of that total, 1,546 have either met recovery guidelines or have died and 18 of the active cases are hospitalized, the health department noted.

Christopher &amp; Banks, a specialty women's apparel retailer with stores in Salina's Central Mall, announced today that it has voluntarily filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, and will close a significant portion, if not all, of its brick-and-mortar stores.

The company also announced that it has launched a store-closing and liquidation process. 

As of Wednesday, the company operated 449 stores in 44 states consisting of 315 MPW stores, 76 Outlet stores, 31 Christopher &amp; Banks stores, and 28 stores in its women’s plus size clothing division CJ Banks. The company also operates the www.ChristopherandBanks.com eCommerce website.

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued both a red flag warning and and high wind warnings for much of the area on Friday.

A red flag warning means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now, or will shortly. A combination of strong winds, low relative humidity and warm temperatures can contribute to extreme fire behavior.

NWS in Wichita has issued a red flag warning in effect from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Friday for the following counties in our area.

Northwest winds of 30 to 40 mph with gusts of 55 to 60 mph and reative humidity as low as 30 percent are forecast.

Any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly and become very difficult to control. Outdoor burning is not recommended.

A high wind warning remains in effect until 6 p.m. Friday for the following counties in our area, according to NWS in Wichita.

Northwest winds of 30 to 45 mph with gusts up to 60 mph are forecast. On Friday, the highest wind speeds are expected in the afternoon.

Gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result. People should avoid being outside in forested areas and around trees and branches. If possible, remain in the lower levels of your home during the windstorm, and avoid windows. Use caution if you must drive.

A high wind warning remains in effect through 6 p.m. Friday for the following counties in our area, according to NWS in Topeka.

Northwest winds of 25 to 40 mph with gusts of 50 to 60 mph are expected.

Artist L.H. Sven Johnson is now exhibiting in the virtual Gallery 708 at Salina Public Library. 

The exhibit “The Grammatical Heirs” will be on display at <a href="http://salinapubliclibrary.org/virtual" target="_blank">salinapubliclibrary.org/virtual</a> until Jan. 31. It includes 14 mixed medium art prints that focus on existence and how everything in life changes but leaves a mark.

L.H. Sven Johnson attended the Minneapolis College of Art &amp; Design (1996-97) and received a B.A. in Art from the University of Iowa (2000). He has worn many hats throughout the years, including a six-year stint as a designer and builder of crates for the Art Institute of Chicago. He&nbsp; currently resides in the small studio he built among the wheat fields north of Galva.

Now on its fourth exhibit, the virtual Gallery 708 is making a difference in the Salina community by providing local artists a place to share their work during pandemic restrictions.&nbsp;

“The Salina Public Library's Gallery 708 is an important access point to the arts and for artists in the Salina community. Gallery 708 is one of only a handful of public gallery spaces in Salina offering an unbiased community space for local artwork to be shared,” Glory Benacka, programs coordinator and gallery manager, explained.&nbsp;

People from around the country have been able to browse the gallery online, which provides the library an exciting extension of services beyond traditional community borders. The appeal of the project doesn’t surprise Benacka who hopes the exhibits can act as a beacon for the community during challenging times.

“After the plague of the Middle Ages was the Renaissance,” she said. “I hope that in its own very small way Gallery 708 reminds people of life, hope and beauty that can come out of this time.”

There’s a new coronavirus-related scam making the rounds, but this time the crooks are targeting small businesses. 

It starts with an email that claims to come from the “Small Business Administration Office of Disaster Assistance.” It says you’re eligible for a loan of up to $250,000 and asks for personal information like birth date and Social Security number. 

Let’s do a CSI-style investigation to spot clues that the email is a fake.

Clue No. 1.&nbsp;You got an email or phone call out of the blue that claims to be from the IRS, the Social Security Administration, or – in this case – the Small Business Administration. The FTC has warned about&nbsp;<a href="https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0048-government-imposter-scams">government imposter scams&nbsp;</a>like this.

Clue No. 2. You were told that you’re automatically eligible for a big loan. Real lenders never do this.

Clue No. 3. You’re asked to hand over your date of birth and Social Security number. This is a tip-off that the sender is trying to steal your personal information.

Phishing attempts aren’t the only scam that business owners are reporting. We’ve heard from people who have applied for loans through websites pretending to be part of the SBA’s Economic Injury Disaster Loan program, which has been extended to December 31, 2021. And other people report they’ve been contacted to repay loans they never took out. The likely culprits? Criminals who illegally applied for loans in their name.

Here are steps you can take to help protect yourself.

Check your credit report.&nbsp;The worst time to learn that someone has taken out a loan in your name is when you’re applying for a loan yourself. So check your credit report first at&nbsp;<a href="http://www.annualcreditreport.com/">www.annualcreditreport.com</a>, the authorized source for the free reports consumers are guaranteed by law. In addition, the three major credit bureaus are offering free weekly online reports to consumers through April 2021. If you’re not in the market for credit or a loan,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0497-credit-freeze-faqs">freezing your credit&nbsp;</a>offers an extra – and free – measure of protection.

Look for reliable sources of information. Looking for a loan? Don’t click on a link in an unsolicited email and be careful with online search engine results. Scammers often bait their online traps with sound-alike names and URLs, phony endorsements, and professional-looking websites. For small business owners looking for COVID-relief programs, always start at&nbsp;<a href="http://www.sba.gov/">www.sba.gov</a>, the official site of the Small Business Administration. Or reach out to a trusted financial institution in your community.

Check out lenders before sharing personal information.&nbsp;Scammers who impersonate lenders have the perfect excuse to ask you for lots of personal information that can be used to steal your identity. Don’t leave a trail of personal information exposed by filling out lots of applications online with lenders you don’t know. Investigate lenders first and if you spot something amiss, stop. And then file a report at&nbsp;<a href="https://reportfraud.ftc.gov/">ReportFraud.ftc.gov</a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;

It is patently false that the Salina Police Department is refusing to act on complaints filed with the department due to some sort of on-going KBI investigation. Our department is NOT forwarding or referring these complaints to another law enforcement agency for investigation.

Local police departments are the first point of contact if you feel you are a victim of a crime, including perceived threats posted on social media.

SPD pushes back at social media comments about filing complaints

JEWELL COUNTY -- A small earthquake struck in Jewell County Wednesday night.

According to the Kansas Geological Survey, a 3.0 magnitude quake struck at 11:05 p.m. Wednesday south-southeast of Esbon. The quake was centered north of K Road and east of 70 Road in the west central part of Jewell County.

A Salina man was arrested on multiple requested charges after the car he was driving struck a parked pickup in central Salina late Wednesday.

Zachary VanBebber, 35, of Salina, was northbound in the 700 block of Hancock Street when the 2017 Toyota Corolla he was driving struck a parked 2001 Ford pickup owned by Boretec LLC, 1645 Copper Court, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester reported this morning. The impact pushed the pickup forward and up onto the curb, he added. The accident occurred at 11 p.m. Wednesday.

According to Forrester, VanBebber fled on foot from the scene.

Witnesses at the scene told officers that the driver was a male who was bald and had a long beard, Forrester noted.

Officers then received a 911 call from 673 South Third Street. They responded to that location and spoke to VanBebber, Forrester explained.

After investigating the crash and speaking to witnesses, officers arrested VanBebber on the following requested charges, Forrester reported.
