ELLSWORTH COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just after 1:30p.m. Wednesday in Ellsworth County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2017 GMC Savanna driven by Teresa Marie Corwin, 32, Salina, was eastbound on 3rd Road seven miles west of Kansas 156.

The driver lost of the van when it hit a bad patch on a dirt road. The driver overcorrected and the van overturned north of the road in a field.

EMS transported&nbsp;Cowin to Clara Barton Hospital in Hoisington. She was properly restrained at the time of the accident, according to the KHP.

Millions of dollars in tax credits go unclaimed each year because people don't know they are eligible. You can help these individuals by volunteering through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program sponsored by the Salina Area United Way. 

VITA volunteers help people apply for Earned Income Tax Credits and other eligible tax credits. The program serves Saline County and the surrounding area.

More than 30 volunteers are needed. Volunteers will assist people with low-to-moderate incomes at the new location with the new process due to the pandemic. Flexible daytime, evening, and Saturday hours.

●Free tax preparer volunteer training is available online with in-person support. 

●All VITA volunteers are IRS-certified and have on-going support at the VITA site. 

●Volunteer positions include: Greeter, Screener, Tax Preparer, Quality Reviewer, and Site Coordinator

Individuals who participate in the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program receive basic training and IRS Certification appropriate for their volunteer positions. Certification and training are through online resources on basic income tax law for federal and state returns. Self-study materials are online or hard copies may be picked up at the Salina Area United Way office.

Siblings duel for first in SES spelling bee

Sadly, we have been notified of two additional deaths due to COVID-19 since our last update on January 11. Eighty members of our community have lost their lives to this virus.&nbsp;Salina Regional Health Center notified us that they currently have 25 hospitalized COVID-19 patients.

There have been 125 new positive COVID-19 cases reported in Saline County since January 11. The total number of positive cases for Saline County has risen to 4,973.

The Health Department staff are now actively monitoring 1,859 cases. At least 3,034 have recovered. Our dashboard has been updated with the latest information:

Following the proven public health guidance to slow the spread of COVID-19 continues to be extremely important for everyone to do. Please:&nbsp;

Eighty members of our community have lost their lives to this virus.&nbsp;Salina Regional Health Center notified us that they currently have 25 hospitalized COVID-19 patients. There have been 125 new positive COVID-19 cases reported in Saline County since January 11. The total number of positive cases for Saline County has risen to 4,973. The Health Department staff are now actively monitoring 1,859 cases. At least 3,034 have recovered. Saline County: Two additional deaths, 125 new COVID-19 cases

New health apps are popping up every day, promising to help you track your health conditions, count your calories, manage your medications, or predict your ovulation. These apps often ask for some of your most sensitive personal information, like your health history, medication list, or whether you have ever suffered a miscarriage.

Some apps use that sensitive information only to give you services. But others may use it for their own research, to target you with ads, or disclose — or even sell — your data to other companies. And, unlike your doctor, these apps may not be covered by health privacy laws like HIPAA.

For example, Flo is a health app that functions as an ovulation calendar, period tracker, and pregnancy guide. In a settlement announced today, the <a href="https://www.ftc.gov/news-events/press-releases/2021/01/developer-popular-womens-fertility-tracking-app-settles-ftc">FTC said that the makers of the Flo app </a>shared users’ personal health information with marketing and analytics companies like Facebook and Google — even though it had promised users to keep this sensitive information private. As part of the settlement, Flo Health, Inc. has agreed to get users’ consent before it can share their information in the future. The settlement also requires Flo to get an outside review of the honesty of its privacy promises.

How can you avoid the risks associated with these types of health apps? Here are some things to consider:

●Compare privacy protections.&nbsp;Many competing health apps offer similar services. When choosing between apps, compare their privacy protections. Look for a privacy notice that explains in simple terms what health information the app collects from you, as well as how it uses and shares your information with other companies and users. If the app shares your information, does it tell you why, and does it limit what others can do with it?

●Take control of your sensitive information.&nbsp;Take a look at the app’s settings to see if it gives you control over what health information it collects and shares. An app’s default settings often encourage sharing, so it can be useful to select more protective options.

●Keep your app up to date.&nbsp;App updates sometimes include important fixes for privacy or security glitches. One of the best ways to protect your information is to keep your app (and your phone’s operating system) up to date.

●Recognize the risks.&nbsp;What sensitive information will the app have access to? Are the app’s services worth the risk of someone else getting hold of that? Some companies don’t uphold their privacy promises. In this case, we said that even if you reviewed Flo’s privacy promises and looked at the settings, your information could still have been disclosed to other companies. Sharing sensitive information always carries risks, so be sure you’re comfortable with what you’ve shared, in case privacy promises aren’t kept.

●Report your concerns.&nbsp;If you think a health app isn’t keeping up its end of the bargain,&nbsp;let the FTC know. The FTC regularly brings enforcement actions against companies that misrepresent how they use or disclose people’s sensitive health information.

TOPEKA—The&nbsp;<a href="https://kansascourts.org/l/pfOLYrv_uAu5HQUryA-dFiraZwQC7S1qBSTlJKwTSa0" target="_blank">9th Judicial District Nominating Commission</a>&nbsp;has selected Ellen Neufeld to fill a district magistrate judge vacancy in McPherson County.

The commission conducted public interviews of nominees by videoconference Jan. 12.

Neufeld's new position will be effective on her swearing in. She is an Inman attorney.

The 9th Judicial District is composed of Harvey and McPherson counties. The vacancy was created by Judge Steve Hilgers' Jan. 8 retirement. Four people had applied for the opening.

Kansas law requires that this district magistrate judge be:

●a resident of McPherson County at the time of taking office and while holding office;

●a graduate of a high school, a secondary school, or the equivalent; and

●either a lawyer admitted to practice in Kansas or able to pass an examination given by the Supreme Court to become certified within 18 months.

After serving one year in office, the new magistrate judge must stand for a retention vote in the next general election to remain in the position. If retained, the incumbent will serve a four-year term.

Neufeld picked for district magistrate judge in McPherson County

Police are looking for the driver of a red pickup that struck a pedestrian in west Salina Tuesday evening.

Gary Brown was attempting to cross the street in the 1500 block of West Crawford Street just east of Choctaw Avenue and was northbound using a handicap walking cart, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester reported this morning.

According to Forrester, a red pickup that was traveling westbound on West Crawford Street struck Brown and then continued westbound without stopping. 

Evidence left at the scene indicates the pickup is a 97-03 Ford, Forrester noted. Police are looking for surveillance video in the area for additional evidence, he added. 

Brown sustained serious, but not life threatening injuries, Forrester reported.

The Saline County Road and Bridge Department has announced the closing of a portion of Mentor Road for drainage work.

Mentor Road between South Woodward Road and South Cunningham Road will be closed to through traffic beginning Thursday for replacement of a cross-road drainage structure. Weather permitting the roadway will be opened by the beginning of March 2021. 

 Motorists are advised to allow a few extra minutes of travel time to reach their destinations.  Local and emergency traffic will be provided access to private property within the sections of closed road at all times but only from the side upon which the property lies.

The images of insurrection in the Capitol are as much our legacy now as putting a man on the moon. It’s a stark contrast of what happens when we choose to embrace what divides us rather than what unites us. There’s no doubt we all want the same things. We want the satisfaction from a good day’s work. We want a warm bed to sleep in. We all want safety and security for our friends and families. We all want our children to enjoy success greater than our own. While our opinions differ on the best way to achieve these goals, time and time again reaching consensus and moving forward together has proven to be the most effective option. In times of tragedy, like a death or natural disaster, we come together to mourn, recover and rebuild. In this moment, our national tragedy is manmade, but the solution is still unity and together we can mourn, recover and rebuild. I’m proud of the pragmatism Kansas Farm Bureau employs to advocate for the interest of farmers and ranchers. We have and will continue to work with leaders of all stripes to advance our grassroots policy and organizational goals. I must admit, I’d much rather work with leaders willing to tell hard, uncomfortable truths than ones who would placate me with promises that will never be realized. One of the best things we can do right now is demand truth from our elected representatives, no matter how unsavory it may be. We can overcome a difference of opinions, but we will be sunk by differing versions of reality. When our forefathers declared their independence at the birth of our nation, it’s said Benjamin Franklin said, “we must all hang together, or ... we shall all hang separately.” For nearly 250 years we’ve been strengthened by our unity and built one of the greatest societies of the world. For it to continue, we must choose to see the best in others. We must strive for consensus in areas where it’s obtainable, and we must continue debating in good faith in those were we can’t. Last week provided a compelling example. A few politicians entertained the idea the election results could be challenged. A mob stormed the Capitol in hopes of changing those results. In the end, the mob lost, and reality was certified. That result isn’t guaranteed in the future, and we now must choose if we want to continue on a path that will fray the fabric that holds us together or if we will rise to the occasion and let the stain fade as we have with other dark days in our history. As individuals, it’s our duty to listen to each other if we want to mend and heal our nation. If we do this together today, I can promise you tomorrow will be brighter in our United States.

INSIGHT: Strength of unity

Today is Wednesday, Jan. 13, the 13th day of 2021. There are 352 days left in the year. 

On Jan. 13, 1982, an Air Florida 737 crashed into Washington, D.C.'s 14th Street Bridge and fell into the Potomac River while trying to take off during a snowstorm, killing a total of 78 people, including four motorists on the bridge; four passengers and a flight attendant survived. 

In 1733, James Oglethorpe and some 120 English colonists arrived at Charleston, South Carolina, while en route to settle in present-day Georgia.

In 1794, President George Washington approved a measure adding two stars and two stripes to the American flag, following the admission of Vermont and Kentucky to the Union. (The number of stripes was later reduced to the original 13.)

A fire weather watch means that critical fire weather conditions are forecast to occur.

The National Weather Service (NWS) in Wichita has issued a fire weather watch effective Thursday morning through Thursday afternoon for the following counties in our area.

Extreme grassland fire danger is forecast. Winds from the northwest at 25 to 40 mph, with gusts 50 to 60 mph, and relative humidity as low as 25 percent are forecast.

Any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly and become very difficult or impossible to control, NWS noted. Outdoor burning is not recommended.

NWS in Wichita has issued a high wind watch in effect from Thursday morning through Thursday afternoon for the following counties in our area.

Northwest winds of 30 to 40 mph with gusts up to 60 mph are possible.

Damaging winds could blow down tree limbs and power lines, NWS reported. Numerous power outages are possible. Travel could be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles traveling on east to west roadways.

NWS in Hastings, Neb., has issued a high wind watch in effect from late Wednesday night through Friday afternoon for the following counties in our area.

Northwest winds of 30 to 40 mph with gusts of 55 to 60 mph are possible.

Damaging winds could blow down trees and power lines. Widespread power outages are possible. Travel could be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles.

The initial surge of strong northwest winds will occur behind a cold front late tonight, according to NWS. The strongest winds will be mid morning through late afternoon on both Thursday and Friday, with relative lulls expected early Thursday morning and again Thursday night into early Friday morning. Even during the relative lulls, wind gusts up to 45 mph will be   possible.

NWS has issued a wind advisory in effect from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Thursday for the following counties in our area.

Northwest winds of 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 50 mph are expected, NWS noted.

Gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects. Some small tree limbs could be knocked down along with a few power outages possible.
