Salina USD 305 has announced the selection of Brandon J. Cheeks as the Sunset Elementary principal effective July 1, 2021.

Cheeks has been an educator for 16 years, most recently serving as assistant principal at South Middle School. Previous experiences include two years as school administrator in Newton and 13 years teaching social studies at Lakewood Middle School. At Lakewood Middle School, he coached basketball, track and cross-country sports.

He is St. John’s MBC Assistant to the Pastor and is a student support advisor at Kansas Wesleyan University. Cheeks is a board member for the Greater Salina Community Foundation.

Cheeks earned his bachelor’s degree and teaching certificate from Kansas Wesleyan University. He earned his master’s degree in educational leadership from Kansas State University.

Lonny Schropp, currently principal at Sunset Elementary School, plans to retire at the end of this school year.

Saline County is close to moving to the next step of its COVID-19 vaccination plan.

"We expect to meet our milestone of vaccinating 30 percent of the over 65 population by the end of this week!" the Saline County Health Department noted in today's Vax Facts. "This allows us to start scheduling high-contact critical workers (HCCW) to receive their vaccinations beginning the week of February 15."

According to the health department, HCCWs included in this group include the following.

●First-responders, including law enforcement and firefighters

●City and county critical infrastructure workers

"Evening clinics will be available to accommodate the unique scheduling challenges of K-12 staff and childcare providers," the health department noted.

Additionally, vaccinations for those 65 and older, as well as those populations in Phase 1, will continue to be the priority until completion, the health department reported.

Persons age 65 or older, and anyone in Phase 1 who has yet to be vaccinated are currently eligible to be vaccinated.

Salina Central names students to first semester honor roll

Multiple recognitions, upcoming school calendars, and an Opportunity Now update are among the agenda items for today's USD 305 Board of Education meeting.

The meeting is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at the district offices, 1511 Gypsum.

HOPE -- Two additional earthquakes shook parts of Dickinson County overnight.

After a 3.1 magnitude quake struck northeast of Hope late Monday afternoon (<a href="https://salinapost.com/posts/7188c043-7d31-4f47-8ce1-bfaf98c8761d">read here</a>), a second quake rattled the area to the east of Hope at 11:52 p.m. Monday, according to the Kansas Geological Survey (KGS). That quake, reported to be a 2.5 magnitude temblor, was centered just east of Paint Road between Kansas Highway 4 and 600 Avenue.

A third earthquake shook the area northeast of Hope and northwest of Herington at 12:51 a.m. Tuesday. The 2.3 magnitude quake was centered north of 800 Avenue between Sage Road and Trail Road.

Webinars will help producers provide safe, healthy food to customers&nbsp;

MANHATTAN – John and Freida Miller thought it was just good business to wash lettuce before putting it out for sale at Cheney Lake Produce, a business they’ve operated for the past 12 years.&nbsp;

After attending a produce safety workshop hosted by the Kansas Department of Agriculture and K-State Research and Extension, the Millers learned that there was a better way to assure the safety of produce once it got into the hands of consumers.&nbsp;

There are no regulatory requirements to wash lettuce before selling it to consumers. So instead, the Millers began encouraging customers to wash lettuce once they got it home, which helps prevent the unintentional introduction of food pathogens during commercial washing.&nbsp;

For the Millers, that was one of the lessons learned at a Produce Safety Alliance (PSA) training, which will again be offered in Kansas beginning in March. A full list of&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ksre.k-state.edu/foodsafety/produce/index.html" target="_blank">upcoming trainings is available online</a>.&nbsp;

K-State Research and Extension produce safety associate Cal Jamerson invited Miller and his son, Walter, to attend PSA training. “Cal is very helpful,” Miller said. “He comes from a farming background, so it doesn’t take long to connect. I appreciate that Cal can speak from experience when he’s leading training.”&nbsp;

In addition to the changes in washing lettuce, Cheney Lake Produce also installed stainless steel cutting surfaces.&nbsp;

“We try to keep the whole growing process clean and sterile, so we don’t have to get rid of anything or add anything,” Miller said.&nbsp;

Jamerson called Miller “a great farmer…he has fantastic growing and post-harvest practices,” but noted that the Millers’ commitment is symbolic of many produce growers in Kansas.&nbsp;

“I can say from firsthand experience that Kansas growers strive to grow and distribute safe produce,” Jamerson said.&nbsp;

Londa Nwadike, an extension associate professor of food safety who has a dual appointment in Kansas and Missouri, said the upcoming&nbsp;<a href="http://www.ksre.k-state.edu/foodsafety/produce/index.html" target="_blank">produce safety training sessions are available online</a>&nbsp;at no- or low-cost, but registration is required.&nbsp;

Feb. 24 or April 21 (3-5 p.m.)&nbsp;– Good Agricultural Practices (GAPs) food safety plan.

March 5 (noon to 1 p.m.)&nbsp;–&nbsp;Kansas Produce Safety update.

March 18 and 25 (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.)&nbsp;–&nbsp;Food Safety Modernization Act and Produce Safety Alliance training.

March 24 (6-7 p.m.)&nbsp;–&nbsp;Wildlife control for produce growers.

May 10 (3-5 p.m.)&nbsp;– Introduction to produce safety and post-harvest handling.&nbsp;

In addition to the free webinars, K-State Research and Extension and the KDA can provide an On Farm Readiness Review to produce growers for free, according to Nwadike. K-State Research and Extension also continues to provide free water testing to produce growers and currently has cost-share funding for growers interested in GAPs certification.&nbsp;

“We can also provide general technical assistance in produce safety to growers,” Nwadike said.&nbsp;

The workshops are available to produce growers because of funding from various sources, including the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture; KDA and the Food and Drug Administration; and KDA specialty crop block grants.&nbsp;

“Grower education is a team effort, reflecting a partnership with the Produce Safety Alliance and K-State Research and Extension that results in On-Farm Readiness Reviews and other quality educational programs,” said Brad McMillan, a KDA food, drug, lodging surveyor.&nbsp;

“These efforts have helped hard-working produce growers understand the new produce safety rule and incorporate the new requirements into their production system to ensure they are providing safe, healthful food for consumers.”&nbsp;

Bridge bids, health insurance, the 2022 budget process, and an executive session are among the items on the Saline County Commission agenda for Tuesday.

The meeting is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. Tuesday via Zoom and the county's YouTube channel. This decision to revise the meeting format was made to align with the mass gathering limitations imposed by the Saline County Commission and Saline County Health Officer.

The Emergency Accident Reporting Plan has been implemented due to severe weather and/or hazardous driving conditions as the number of motor vehicle accidents exceeds the Department’s ability to respond in a timely manner.

Eligible accidents: Any non-hit and run, non-personal injury motor vehicle accident that does not require towing, and does not involve alcohol or drugs.

Driver requirements: Exchange personal information with the other driver(s) involved or property owner.

Complete an Emergency Accident Reporting Plan accident report form as completely as possible and mail or deliver the completed report to the Salina Police Department within 48 hours.

SALINE COUNTY —One person was injured in an accident just before 4:30p.m. Monday in Saline County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2016 Chevy Cobalt driven by Danny R. Marquez, 40, Colorado Springs, was southbound on Interstate 135 three miles south southwest of Assaria.

The driver lost control due adverse roadway conditions. The car entered the median, struck a guardrail and rolled over.

EMS transported Marquez to Salina Regional Health Center. He was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

Man hospitalized in Salina after car strikes guardrail, rolls

We are saddened to announce that there have been five additional deaths due to COVID-19 reported since February 5; this brings the total number of members of our community who have lost their lives to this deadly virus to 100. Salina Regional Health Center has notified us that they currently have 16 patients who require hospitalization for COVID-19.

There have been 50 new positive COVID-19 cases reported in Saline County since our last update on February 5, which brings the total number of positive cases for Saline County to 5,765.

Following the proven public health guidance to slow the spread of COVID-19 continues to be extremely important for everyone to do. Please:&nbsp;

 </figure>We are saddened to announce that there have been five additional deaths due to COVID-19 reported since February 5; this brings the total number of members of our community who have lost their lives to this deadly virus to 100. Salina Regional Health Center has notified us that they currently have 16 patients who require hospitalization for COVID-19. There have been 50 new positive COVID-19 cases reported in Saline County since our last update on February 5, which brings the total number of positive cases for Saline County to 5,765. The Health Department staff are now actively monitoring 1,303 cases. At least 4,362 have recovered.
