You’ve heard of <a href="https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/blog/2021/02/not-love-actually">romance scams</a>. But do you know how they happen? They start when scammers create fake profiles on dating apps or social media. Then, those scammers strike up a relationship with their targets and work to build trust. Sometime later, they make up a story and <a href="https://www.ftc.gov/news-events/blogs/data-spotlight/2021/02/romance-scams-take-record-dollars-2020">ask for money</a>.

So how do you spot a romance scammer? Here are some things to watch for:

●Any love interest who asks you to give them money on a gift card, by money transfer, or cryptocurrency is a scammer. Period.

●Romance scammers profess love quickly. They might say they can’t meet you because they’re overseas for business or military service — but, during the pandemic, they might just say they’re locked down.

 ●Romance scammers might try to lure you off the dating site.

●Scammers will find a reason to ask you for money — maybe to buy a phone card to keep chatting, maybe to help with a “medical emergency,” or maybe something else.

●Romance scammers sometimes build interesting dating profiles. But try a reverse-image search of the profile pictures. Are any photos associated with another name, or with details that don’t match up? That’s just more proof that it’s a scam.

If you’ve spotted any of these signs of a scam, tell the online dating app or social media platform right away. And then tell the FTC at <a href="https://reportfraud.ftc.gov/#/">ReportFraud.ftc.gov</a>

UPDATE: All counties in our area now have wind chill advisories

With the weather continuing to get colder, the Salvation Army has updated information concerning its warming shelter.

Captain Lynn Lopez issued the following statement late this afternoon.

The Salvation Army Emergency Day Shelter will be open from 8a-6p February 13-15 for the holiday weekend. We will have meals available inside for our homeless population. There will be no drive thru meals or social services available this weekend.

Salvation Army updates information about its warming shelter

Saline County is moving forward with the next step of Phase 2 COVID-19 vaccinations.

According to today's Vax Facts, more than 30 percent of the county's senior citizens have been vaccinated.

"While senior citizens remain the priority, hitting this milestone allows us to begin including additional Phase 2 populations in vaccine scheduling," the information from the Saline County Health Department noted. "Salina Family Healthcare Center has begun scheduling first responders, including law enforcement and firefighters, city and county critical infrastructure workers, K-12 staff and teachers, and childcare providers."

According to the health department, Saline County has been allocated 900 first-round doses for the week of Feb. 15. The distribution of those doses will be as follows.

●450 are allocated to those over the age of 65.

●300 are being designated for K-12 teachers and staff and childcare providers.

●150 are reserved for first responders and city and county critical infrastructure workers.

Evening clinics will be available to accommodate scheduling challenges of K-12 staff and childcare providers, the health department noted.

"If you believe you are eligible to receive your vaccine and have not yet registered please do so immediately. If you have already registered, please do not register twice," the health department urged.

Concordia's Teel among winners in KS Lottery Chiefs giveaway

Police are looking for a person who followed two people as they delivered food early this morning.

According to Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester, a man and a woman were delivering food for Door Dash at the Reserves, 2515 South Ohio Street, around midnight, when they noticed a black 2018 GMC Sierra 1500 pickup driving in the parking lot. They continued to deliver food and continued to see the pickup periodically while on their route.

They went to the 24/7 Travel Store, 671 Westport Boulevard, at approximately 2 a.m. to get gas, and again observed the pickup, which then followed them as they left eastbound on West Crawford Street, Forrester explained. 

The pickup eventually pulled alongside them and motioned for them to turn south onto Sheridan Street. Instead, they turned northbound and called the Salina Police Department to say they were headed there, Forrester noted. The pickup followed them to the front parking lot of the Salina Police Department, 255 North Tenth Street.

According to Forrester, the pickup was leaving as officers arrived. Officers attempted to stop the pickup but it fled northbound.

Through investigation, a suspect has been developed, Forrester noted.

A Salina man was arrested after a high-speed pursuit Wednesday afternoon.

At approximately 3:45 p.m. Wednesday, officers observed a 1996 Buick Regal traveling south in the 1800 block of North Ninth Street. When officers ran the temporary tag, they learned the vehicle was reported stolen out of Lawrence, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester explained this morning.

As officers attempted to stop the car near the intersection of North Ninth Street and Stimmel Road, the Buick accelerated and went east on Stimmel Road and south on North Fifth Street, at times reaching speeds of approximately 70 mph. The car also passed a school bus with its stop sign out in the 1000 block of North Fifth Street, Forrester  noted.

The pursuit continued through north Salina neighborhoods and eventually ended up on North Ohio Street northbound from Pacific Avenue, with speeds reaching approximately 90 mph on North Ohio Street. The car then went west on Interstate 70, reaching speeds of up to 100 mph, Forrester reported. The Buick then went south on Interstate 135 to the West Crawford Street exit, where it spun around facing northbound on the south bound off-ramp. The car then turned around and went east on West Crawford Street and then north on Beverly Drive.

According to Forrester, the car came to a stop in the 600 block of Rocket Avenue and the driver fled on foot. After a brief foot pursuit, the driver, identified as Anthony Richardson, 50, of Salina, was taken into custody.

The owner of the car was contacted and didn't know Richardson, Forrester noted.

Richardson, who had a suspended driver's license and an active Kansas Department of Corrections absconder warrant, was arrested on multiple requested charges, including felony flee and elude, possession of stolen property, felony interference with law enforcement, reckless driving, driving while suspended, and numerous other traffic offenses, Forrester reported.

Regardless, we each learned lessons in our childhoods that we’ve taken into adulthood. Some are good habits and healthy views on money that help us. Some are lessons we wish we could&nbsp;unlearn.

Talking through this with your spouse will be eye-opening. Knowing how your spouse grew up thinking about money might explain why&nbsp;they&nbsp;get buyer’s remorse after every purchase, why&nbsp;you&nbsp;hate budgeting, or why either of you gets uncomfortable talking about money. A group of 195 evacuees was cleared to end a two-week quarantine at a Southern California military base, where they had been staying since flying out of China amid the coronavirus outbreak.

In 1812, Massachusetts Gov. Elbridge Gerry signed a redistricting law favoring his Democratic-Republican Party — giving rise to the term "gerrymandering."

In 1847, American inventor Thomas Alva Edison was born in Milan, Ohio.

In 1861, President-elect Abraham Lincoln bade farewell to his adopted hometown of Springfield, Ill., as he headed to Washington for his inauguration.

Today in History -- Feb. 11

OTTAWA COUNTY —Two people died in an accident just after 7p.m. Wednesday in Ottawa County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2020 Ford Escape driven by Thomas Huiett, 96, Salina, was southbound in the northbound lanes of U.S. 81 eight miles north of Salina.

The Ford struck a 2017 Chevrolet Traverse driven by  Tasha Meitler, 30, Delphos, in the passing lane.

Huiett and Meitler were pronounced dead at the scene.&nbsp; EMS transported a passenger in the Chevy identified as Lexi&nbsp;Meitler, 8, Delphos, to Wesley Medical Center. Huiett was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

Local, area students earn academic honors at UNL

Following is the Saline County COVID-19 update for Wednesday.

We are saddened to announce that there has been one additional death due to COVID-19 reported since February 8; this brings the total number of members of our community who have lost their lives to this deadly virus to 101. Salina Regional Health Center has notified us that they currently have 13 patients who require hospitalization for COVID-19.

There have been 32 new positive COVID-19 cases reported in Saline County since our last update on February 8, which brings the total number of positive cases for Saline County to 5,797.

The Health Department staff are now actively monitoring 1,329 cases. At least 4,367 have recovered. Our dashboard has been updated with the latest information:

USD 305 presented Horizon Awards to two teachers who have demonstrated excellence during their first full year of teaching.

2021 Secondary Horizon Award Marysa McCartney, Central High School

McCartney is now a second-year business teacher at Central High School. She left a career as a corporate accountant, in the private sector, to become a classroom teacher. She understands what it take to be successful in business. To the benefit of her students, she converts that to her classroom.

McCartney sees her students as customers and teaching is the service she offers. She constantly seeks ways to improve lessons to engage her students better, asking students for feedback about what is working or not working so well.

She is dedicated to the Central High School community, evidenced in her coaching both volleyball and basketball. Her work ethic is a powerful influence for her students while modeling the many skills necessary to balance work, community involvement and a home life.

In her classroom you will find project- and discovery-based learning and she is always looking for ways to connect curriculum to interesting, useful projects. Her students know that they matter and are cared for, every day. 

“At the heart of my teaching will always be building a stronger relationship with students,” McCartney explained.

McCartney looks for opportunity in every challenge. During the COVID-19 experience, McCartney lists gains such as “we have improved the effectiveness of our teaching through technology; I was able to connect more, one-on-one, with students; I learned more about Google Meets and other applications; my students learned to communicate, professionally, over the internet; my students realized the privilege of being in the classroom.”

Kelly Heizman, assistant principal at Central High, added, “Marysa is a teacher who makes me proud of the education profession.”

2021 Elementary Horizon Award Larrah Bills, Heusner Elementary

Bills is in her second year as second&nbsp;grade teacher at Heusner Elementary School. Her expectations are high for both her students and herself and she models how to achieve these expectations. For instance, her passion about the importance of community inspires her to get to know each student in Heusner Elementary. Moreover, she works hard to address them all by name.

No minute is wasted in Bills' classroom. While working with one student on a math concept she can seamlessly give directions to other students. Her students experience love, support and accountability and learn they can accomplish anything through hard work. She teaches her students empowering mantras that come from a growth mindset. Her classroom becomes a close-knit community of learners who support each other as they grow.

Bills explains, “It is incredibly important to me to help my students grow as individuals, emotionally, socially, and academically, while helping them realize their potential. My students constantly hear me call them “world changers” and hear the phrase, “You make our world a better place.”&nbsp;

In Bills' class there are ample opportunities to work on disagreeing respectfully, problem solving, working through challenges that feel overwhelming and celebrating everyone’s successes, no matter the size of the success.

Lori Munsell, principal at Heusner, explains, “Larrah has found a way to meet students’ needs at the most foundational level. Larrah is each student’s champion, their cheerleader, their advocate, their voice. Larrah is one of those special teachers who makes a huge impact on students and staff.”

The USD 305 Board of Education on Tuesday recognized the district's Master Teacher for this year.

Members of NEA-Salina selected Melanie Hammond, science teacher at South High School, as the USD 305 Master Teacher. Hammond’s nomination to the Emporia State University Kansas Master Teacher program will occur in the 2021-2022 cycle, due to the suspension of their program because of COVID-19, according to information from the district.

Hammond earned her bachelor’s and two master’s degrees from Kansas State University. She has taught science for 20 years at South High School while becoming certified as an English Language Learner, an assistant girl’s swim coach, sponsor of SADD, Big Brothers/Big Sisters and Student Council. She is a mentor teacher and a building representative for NEA-Salina.

This inspired her to pilot Standards Referenced Grading, otherwise known as measuring students’ mastery on well-defined objectives, at South High.
