Richard B. Myers, current Kansas State University president, retired four-star general, and 15th chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, will be the featured speaker at the Salina Area Chamber of Commerce Annual Membership Meeting. 

In addition, Michael Schwanke, news anchor with KWCH, will be a special guest interviewing President Myers and discussing his leadership, military experience, and Salina’s Polytechnic Campus. The event will be held virtually, from noon to 1 p.m. on April 1.

General Richard B. Myers, (USAF, Ret.) returned to his home state and alma mater to serve as Kansas State University’s 14th President. He graduated from the university in 1965 with a Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering and joined the Air Force through K-State’s ROTC program. The native Kansan from Merriam loyally served his country and retired as a four-star general. From 2001-2005, he served as the 15th Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. As chairman, Myers was the highest-ranking uniformed officer of U.S. military forces and served as the principal military adviser to President George W. Bush, Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, and the National Security Council.

Myers selected as chamber annual meeting speaker

The Salvation Army has announced that its community center in north Salina is open to all persons needing to get out of the cold.

According to Captain Lynn Lopez, the facility at 1137 North Santa Fe Avenue is open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. "to the homeless and all folks needing a place to be in these drastic temperatures."

"They can hang out in the dining hall, watch movies, or play basketball/walk in the gym," Lopez noted. "If we need to add hours of operation, the officers will come earlier and stay later."

Lopez explained that juice, coffee, and hot breakfast, as well as hot lunch and hot supper will be served. The facility has a limit of two meals per person. If people are picking up meals to go, they can get two meals per family member, she added.

"Praying no one succumbs to the deep freeze by remaining outdoors!" Lopez noted.

Local Salvation Army facility open as warming, meal center

A Salina man was injured and cited after an SUV-pedestrian accident Thursday morning in south Salina.

Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester reported this morning that Christina Weber, 32, of Salina, was westbound in the 700 block of East Magnolia Road in a 2009 Ford Escape when a pedestrian identified as Julius Eaglefeather-Johnson, 28, of Salina, ran into the roadway and was struck by the SUV. The accident occurred at approximately 10:50 a.m. Thursday.

Witnesses reported that Eaglefeather-Johnson had been arguing with a female then took off running into the street and was struck, Forrester noted. Eaglefeather-Johnson was transported to SRHC with non-life-threatening injuries.

Pedestrian struck, cited after accident in south Salina

The Salina Police Department is seeking the public’s assistance in locating and checking the welfare of a female in the southeastern part of the city.

Investigators believe the person may have been in some type of medical distress. Area hospitals and shelters have been checked to no avail.

The woman is described as being 20-30 years in age, having dark hair, wearing a dark and light long sleeve top and light colored pants.  The female would have been wearing black socks, according to Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester. 

The female was seen at the Eaglecrest Assisted Living, 1501 East Magnolia Road, on Jan. 31 at 8:30 p.m.

On that same date, she was also possibly in the 1600 block of Eaglecrest Avenue, 2300 block of Katie Court, area of Magnolia Road and Shalimar Drive, and  the 2300 block of Shalimar Drive. 

On Feb. 1, she was seen in the area of area of South Ohio Street/Belmont Boulevard/Wayne Avenue at 8:39 a.m.  She was possibly near the Labor Building, 2055 South Ohio Street, on the same date. 

From the Labor Building, investigators believe she may have proceeded west across South Ohio Street or east into the neighborhood, Forrester noted.   

SPD is asking that citizens in the area check their personal or business surveillance systems to see whether images of the woman show up. 

If anyone has any information about this person, please contact the Salina Police Department at 785-826-7210.  The point of contact is Salina Investigations, Forrester noted.

A number of round hay bales were destroyed in an early Saturday morning fire that is being called suspicious.

Deputies and firefighters from Rural Fire District No. 1 were sent to the 3700 block of South Whitmore Road at 5:40 a.m. Saturday for the report of round hay bales on fire, Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said this morning. 

The fire has been called suspicious as nothing was known to have happened in the area to have started the fire, he said. It is believed that the bales had been burning most of the night. They were allowed to burn out, he added.

The bales, owned by Gregory Anderers, 65, of rural Gypsum, were valued at $3,500, Soldan said.

$3,500 worth of hay bales destroyed in early Saturday morning fire

A Salina man was injured after the car he was driving slid off the roadway and struck a power pole Sunday afternoon.

Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said this morning that Nicolas Rush, 19, of Salina, was westbound in the 1800 block of East Old Highway 40 just after 4 p.m. Sunday when he lost control of the 2001 Volkswagen Golf he was driving because of ice on the roadway. The car went into the north ditch, struck a power pole and severed it, then rolled onto the driver's side, Soldan said.

Rush was transported by personal vehicle to Salina Regional Health Center with undisclosed injuries, Soldan reported.

Plan on slippery road conditions and ice accumulation on vehicle windshields. These hazardous conditions will impact the morning commute. Use extreme caution if travel is necessary today.

Salina Area Technical College is hosting its second annual National Career and Technical Letter of Intent Signing Day on April 15, recognizing students who are entering the college this fall.

The event got its inspiration from the athletic signing days colleges have long hosted for incoming student-athletes. It is designed to honor students who are entering a technical field, and to celebrate the dignity of work.

The event started at Washburn Tech in Topeka in 2014, and has since expanded to technical colleges nationwide. The events are now sponsored by the National Coalition of Certification Centers, and individual member industries such as Kubota, Snap-On, Trane and 3M. This year, nearly 100 technical colleges nationwide are planning to participate.

Because of ongoing concerns about COVID, Salina Tech’s event this year will be pre-recorded and broadcast on Salina Tech’s Facebook page starting at 11 a.m. on April 15. Incoming students are being asked to submit photos or short videos of themselves signing their Letter of Intent, which will be incorporated into the video.

Each student participating in the event will receive a Salina Tech t-shirt and cap, as well as a $500 scholarship to the college, with half applied to the fall 2021 semester and half to the spring 2022 semester. To participate, students must have applied and been accepted to Salina Tech before March 2, and register for the Signing Day event.

Salina Tech is in the process of contacting and inviting students who have already applied for admission. Applicants who have not yet been contacted may contact the admissions office at 785-309-3100 or <a href="mailto:admissions@salinatech.edu">admissions@salinatech.edu</a>.

Salina Tech to host signing day event in April

The teacher in the next room down-the-hall from me was fired. I was teaching biology at a university lab school in 1973, where we gave college students their first teaching experiences in our high school classes. My colleague was an older, tenured math teacher who decided one week to begin preaching religion to his secondary students. “If you don’t get right with God, you are going to...” was what he said to his students, several of whom reported this to the principal.&nbsp; He admitted this to the principal when asked, and was told to cease and desist. If it happened again, he would be fired. It happened the very next week. And yes, he was fired.

“Free speech” is a concept for public arenas. And despite the belief that it is unlimited, there are limitations to public speech that beyond yelling “Fire!” in a crowded theater. &nbsp;

But speech in a K-12 or college classroom is more limited. Our “academic freedom” has professional constraints. My lab school colleague crossed that red line when he began proselytizing in school. That very same year, in&nbsp;CPERL v. Nyquist, the Court ruled that the First Amendment does not forbid all mention of religion in public schools, just its purposeful promotion or inhibition. And ten years earlier, in&nbsp;Abington v. Shemp, the Court ruled that if the study of the Bible and religion is presented objectively in a non-religious program of study, it is not unconstitutional. But my colleague was teaching a math class, not history or a survey of religions, and he was not being objectively informational.

A geology teacher would likewise be professionally incompetent teaching students that the world is flat. It violates our current professional understanding. And a population that believes the world is flat could never successfully launch a satellite.

This is not an abstract problem. From 1999 to 2005, I was on the Kansas committee of teachers who faced a State Board of Education that removed evolution from the state standards. Many biology teachers across the state chose to double down on teaching about evolution despite the anemic standards.

But when a teacher in California in 1994 asserted he had an academic freedom right to teach a non-science alternative to evolution in science class, the Court ruled in&nbsp;Peloza v. Capistrano&nbsp;that he did not. &nbsp;

It should be obvious that science teachers should not be using class time to promote religion or politics or other non-science.

But that brings us to the question of social studies and history teachers, where political institutions are the subject being studied. As teachers confront the dilemma of students talking about and asking questions about the storming of the Capitol on January 6, considerable concern has been expressed by teachers in the pages of&nbsp;Education Week&nbsp;(K–12) and even the&nbsp;Chronicle of Higher Education. Students who have witnessed their relatives and classmates emotionally disturbed over this event will likely find that this will become a flash memory for years to come, similar to 9/11 and other public tragedies. This will require teaching strategies that will differ from kindergarten students to college graduate seminars.

Meanwhile, three bills have been introduced by state legislators in Arkansas, Iowa, and Mississippi to ban the use of the “1619 Project” that frames U.S. history around the legacy of slavery. Rationale in those bills to ban this project includes their being “a racially divisive and revisionist account” or attempting to “deny or obfuscate the fundamental principles upon which the United States was founded.”

Another attempted political intrusion into teacher professionalism was the short-lived “1776 Commission” formed by the previous President last September to support “patriotic education.” That commission included no professionals in United States history.

Just as professional medical doctors determine the medicines to be prescribed—in accordance with the standards of their profession and unique needs of their patients, professional teachers likewise determine what they teach based on their profession and students. When a doctor sells snake oil, it is the professional board that pulls their license. That should also be the role of professional teaching boards.

Despite the occasional need for courts to intervene in occasional conflicts, the determination of what is professional practice remains defined by the profession. When it is ordered by the government, teaching becomes propaganda.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Students who have witnessed their relatives and classmates emotionally disturbed over this event will likely find that this will become a flash memory for years to come, similar to 9/11 and other public tragedies. This will require teaching strategies that will differ from kindergarten students to college graduate seminars. Meanwhile, three bills have been introduced by state legislators in Arkansas, Iowa, and Mississippi to ban the use of the “1619 Project” that frames U.S. history around the legacy of slavery. Rationale in those bills to ban this project includes their being “a racially divisive and revisionist account” or attempting to “deny or obfuscate the fundamental principles upon which the United States was founded.” Another attempted political intrusion into teacher professionalism was the short-lived “1776 Commission” formed by the previous President last September to support “patriotic education.” That commission included no professionals in United States history. Just as professional medical doctors determine the medicines to be prescribed—in accordance with the standards of their profession and unique needs of their patients, professional teachers likewise determine what they teach based on their profession and students. When a doctor sells snake oil, it is the professional board that pulls their license. That should also be the role of professional teaching boards. Despite the occasional need for courts to intervene in occasional conflicts, the determination of what is professional practice remains defined by the profession. When it is ordered by the government, teaching becomes propaganda.&nbsp;&nbsp;John Richard Schrock has trained biology teachers for more than 30 years in Kansas. He also has lectured at 27 universities in 20 trips to China. He holds the distinction of “Faculty Emeritus” at Emporia State University.

Dietary Guidelines for Americans is a road map to good health&nbsp;

MANHATTAN – Kansas State University food scientist Karen Blakeslee said the recently released&nbsp;<a href="https://www.dietaryguidelines.gov/" target="_blank">Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2020-2025</a>&nbsp;provide direction for living healthy through all life stages, birth through adulthood.&nbsp;

Blakeslee said the guidelines, announced in December 2020, mark the first time that the governmental agency has devoted chapters to each life stage, including sections on infants and toddlers, and women who are pregnant or lactating.&nbsp;

“We all can make changes to our dietary pattern that can be beneficial at any stage of life, infancy to older adulthood,” Blakeslee said. “The Dietary Guidelines take a lifespan approach to meet dietary needs at any age. Good nutrition during the first year of life helps set the foundation for healthy habits as children grow.”&nbsp;

Blakeslee champions the phrase from the Dietary Guidelines, ‘Make Every Bite Count,’ as a way to good health throughout life. She offers four guidelines:

●Eat a healthy diet throughout every life stage.

●Choose nutrient-dense foods that fit your personal preferences, cultural traditions and budget.

●Eat foods from each food group that are nutrient-dense and within calorie limits.

●Limit added sugars, saturated fat, sodium and alcoholic beverages.&nbsp;

She notes that those four principles can help reduce the incidence of chronic diseases that affect about 60% of Americans.&nbsp;

“Be intentional when making food choices to make every bite of food be the best that it can be for you,” Blakeslee said. “Food should be the primary source of nutrients, and including a variety of foods each day helps meet your personal nutritional needs. Nutrient-dense foods have little to no added sugar, saturated fat and sodium.”&nbsp;

She notes that the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2020-2025 are not intended to be a rigid prescription for eating right, but “they are a guide to make personal choices to meet your nutritional needs.”&nbsp;

“They are designed for all people, and using the guidelines can help slow the progression of many chronic diseases. The Dietary Guidelines for Americans are backed with scientific justification to help improve the lives of consumers.”&nbsp;

Nebraska man pleads no contest in Jewell County scam case

The 2020 People's Choice sculpture, vehicle and equipment purchases, and special assessment projects are among the items on Monday's Salina City Commission agenda.

Corbett, who for more than 20 years worked as a fabricator for Pestinger Heating and Air, died June 8, 2019. Corbett worked on the sculpture, which is made of scrap metal, at Pestinger's before work, during his lunch break, and after work. He loved to work with his hands and could create just about anything with metal. The project started in November of 2018 and was completed in May of 2019.

During the sculpture tour, For the Love of Steel was located in the 200 block of North Santa Fe Avenue on the west side of the street. Commissioners will decide whether it will stay in that location, as is being recommended.

Nearly 300 veterans receive COVID-19 vaccinations Saturday during a clinic at the Robert J. Dole VA Medical Center in Wichita. Now the clinic is headed our way.

An increase in allotted vaccine doses is allowing the Dole VA to get to rural areas with more doses, according to a news release from the Veterans Administration (VA). Vaccination clinics will be held in Parsons on Feb. 10, Hays Feb. 11, and Salina and Hutchinson on Feb. 13. Another Saturday clinic will be held at the Wichita facility on Feb. 20.

The Dole VA is currently offering the COVID-19 vaccine to veterans 65 years of age and older. Veterans can call 316-469-0914 to schedule an appointment.

K-State horticulturalist gets you ready for planting this year’s crop&nbsp;

MANHATTAN – It’s still nearly three months before Kansas gardeners begin to put tomato plants into the ground. 

Kansas State University horticulture expert Ward Upham says that’s an opportunity for gardeners to set themselves up for a bountiful season.&nbsp;

“Most of the varieties available to home gardeners are either indeterminate or semi-determinate,” Upham said.&nbsp;

Indeterminate plants are traditional tomatoes that never stop growing. They are capable of producing fruit throughout the season unless disease stops production or frost kills the plant.&nbsp;

Semi-determinate plants are more compact, but also are capable of producing fruit throughout the season. Another classification is known as determinate, or those varieties that produce one large crop but then virtually nothing afterwards.&nbsp;

“Gardeners with limited space will likely prefer indeterminate or semi-determinate types to stretch out the harvest season,” Upham said. “If there is space, you may want to grow a combination of all three, with the determinates used to produce a large harvest for canning or tomato juice, and the remainder for fresh eating.”&nbsp;

In Kansas, tomatoes are generally planted in early- to mid-May, or when daytime temperatures are above 70 degrees Fahrenheit and the state has passed the frost-free date. In some areas, such as the northwest part of the state, conditions might not be right for planting tomatoes until the middle of May or a bit later, according to Upham.&nbsp;

Even though indeterminate and semi-determinate varieties produce fruit throughout the season, “our hot Kansas summers often cause a dry spell in production in both types,” Upham said.&nbsp;

Tomatoes are less likely to set fruit when night temperatures remain above 75 F and day temperatures are above 95 F. Hot, dry winds make the situation worse, Upham said.&nbsp;

Each year,&nbsp;<a href="https://hnr.k-state.edu/extension/master-gardeners" target="_blank">Kansas Master Gardeners</a>&nbsp;plant and rate a number of tomato varieties. Upham noted that a subsequent trial is conducted by a colleague with the University of Missouri extension service.&nbsp;

Results of trials conducted by Kansas’ Master Gardeners vary by county. Interested persons are encouraged to&nbsp;<a href="http://www.ksre.k-state.edu/about/stateandareamaps.html" target="_blank">contact their local extension office</a>&nbsp;for more information on varieties that perform well in their area.&nbsp;

If you have to be out, watch out for slick roads, especially across southern Kansas, NWS noted.

Additionally, scattered areas of very light snow are expected late tonight through Monday morning across central and eastern Kansas, NWS reported. Some freezing drizzle is possible across south-central and southeast Kansas. This could result in slick roads and walks for the morning commute.
