Salina Area Technical College on Thursday inducted 16 students into its chapter of the National Technical Honor Society.

To qualify for membership in the National Technical Honor Society, students must have at least a 3.5 GPA, be nominated by an instructor, submit an essay about their community service activities and why they should be inducted, and be interviewed by a committee of college faculty and staff.

Because of COVID precautions, attendance at the induction ceremony was limited to the students, their instructors and college staff. It was recorded, and the video can be found on Salina Tech’s Facebook page.

There’s a reason we need a free press, despite its faults and foibles: Democracy won’t work without it.

The grand experiment in self-governance that is the United States is rooted in trust and confidence we all will work toward the greater good. But the nation’s founders had experience with a king and his expected benevolence — and what could happen when things didn’t work out.

So, they provided for three branches of government to balance each other, along with periodic elections and the rights for us to assemble and seek change when we think things have gone astray.

All fine, but also relatively long-term solutions. How do we know what our government is doing, how well it is operating or whether our elected officials are up to the job?

Enter the only profession mentioned in the Constitution: A free press, to serve as a “watchdog on government.” A free press the government cannot control, to offer an independent, regular update on behalf of the rest of us.

Let’s stop to acknowledge that many of us are dissatisfied with the free press we have. Survey after survey shows low public trust in our news outlets and in the journalists who staff them.

But in those same Freedom Forum surveys about the First Amendment that began in 1997, the desire for that watchdog role remains high, often supported by a majority of people questioned.

How can these two results co-exist? The answers rest in what kind of press we mean. Much of the highly visible kerfuffle on social sites today concerns national reporting, and more narrowly, the political pundits on cable TV and the tiny percentage of journalists who are the White House press corps.

For most of us, today’s journalism is something different — and much more relevant to us. We see a news media bringing us the day-to-day information we need to live our lives: What local officials are saying, weather forecasts and crime, health and safety reports for our communities. The work of journalists helps us get things done. Reporters ask the questions we would ask if we could be there.

Jurors in Des Moines, Iowa, this week appeared to support the role of journalists as watchdog when they acquitted reporter&nbsp;Andrea Sahouri, who was arrested while covering a Black Lives Matter protest despite her repeated protestations that she was a journalist.

Local journalists, who are the vast majority of the 24,000-plus on the job today, live in the communities on which they report. In just the past month, they have reported on COVID-19 vaccination programs — both the successes and failures by officials we depend upon to keep us safe and fight the pandemic.

Other recent stories told by big and small news operations alike will benefit hundreds of thousands, if not millions of us.

A report on nursing homes in New York state disclosed they may have tested unproven COVID-19 treatments on residents, despite safety warnings, without telling family members. A news partnership in South Carolina found the state has dropped virtually all oversight of local officials’ activities, leading to “questionable or illegal perks of holding public office.” In Mississippi, residents now know a biodiesel plant is accused of illegally dumping hazardous material into public waterways.

Throughout our nation’s history, it has been a free press that has probed, prodded and produced safer food and medicines and helped reveal waste, fraud and abuse of public trust.

Reporters uncover these stories only by poring over records, reviewing court documents and interviewing sources — activities most of us don’t have the time, skill or opportunity to do.

The guarantee that a press is free does not guarantee it will always be good or correct, or that we will like what it presents. But there are more ways than ever to get news and information and to find reports we can trust or verify.

Ironically, the newest source for news and information has helped create some of the greatest threats to a free press in the nation’s history:

●The web has decimated financial support for traditional media, and newer media is not yet robust enough to take its place. This results in “news deserts,” where no regular sources of journalism exist.

 ●Misinformation can now spread across the globe in milliseconds, sowing doubt, confusion and mistrust of the reports and motives of a free press.

●The free press in any form has been weakened by cuts in staff, with surveys showing the ranks to be less than half of what they were 20 years ago.

Not all the news about a free press is bleak. New financial models are being tested. Collaborations between news organizations and nonpartisan expert collectives have shown results. New attention is focused on regrowing the ranks of local journalism. But more is needed, from increased public support to new revenue sources to regaining the public trust.

On March 16, we celebrate the birthday of James Madison, the principal author of the First Amendment and the rest of the Bill of Rights. He called a free press “one of the great bulwarks of liberty.”

This generation, perhaps unlike any other, is being called on to defend that bulwark and, in the process, protect our liberty.

FIRST FIVE: You can't have democracy without a free press

WICHITA – The arrival of Daylight Saving Time this weekend means one less hour of sleep and the potential for more sleepy drivers on the road.

 AAA Kansas is reminding drivers to adjust your clock and your sleeping habits to make sure you are alert behind the wheel.

According to a study by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, the percentage of crashes involving drowsiness is nearly eight times higher than federal estimates. The difficulty in detecting drowsiness following a crash makes drowsy driving one of the most underreported traffic safety issues.

"When the clocks change, sleep cycles are interrupted and drivers can be more tired than they realize," said Shawn Steward, spokesman for AAA Kansas.&nbsp;"Losing one hour of sleep takes an adjustment and motorists need to prepare by getting more rest, especially on Sunday."

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that 35% of U.S. drivers sleep less than the recommended minimum of seven hours daily. In AAA’s study, nearly all drivers (96 percent) say they view drowsy driving as a serious threat to their safety and a completely unacceptable behavior. However, 29 percent admitted to driving when they were so tired they had a hard time keeping their eyes open at some point in the past month.

"As many Americans struggle to balance their busy schedules, missing a few hours of sleep each day can often seem harmless," Steward added. "But missing just two to three hours of sleep can more than quadruple your risk for a crash, which is the equivalent of driving drunk."

Knowing the warning signs of drowsiness can help drivers avoid dozing off behind the wheel. The most common symptoms include:

●Having trouble keeping your eyes open. 

●Not remembering the last few miles driven

Drivers however should not rely on their bodies to provide warning signs for drowsiness and should instead prioritize getting at least seven hours of sleep before hitting the road.

●Travel at times of the day when they are normally awake. 

●Avoid medications that cause drowsiness or other impairment

●Schedule a break every two hours or every 100 miles. 

●Travel with an alert passenger and take turns driving. 

●Do not underestimate the power of a quick nap. Pulling into a rest stop and taking a quick catnap―at least 20 minutes and no more than 30 minutes of sleep―can help to keep you alert on the road.

Darker morning 'commute' increases risk for pedestrians/students

The other issue increasing risk with the time change is darkness. The Monday morning commute, and the morning commute for several weeks to come, will be much darker than what drivers are used to, a serious concern because 76% of pedestrian fatalities happen when it’s dark, according to&nbsp;<a href="http://aaacluballiance.pr-optout.com/Tracking.aspx?Data=HHL%3d844280-%3eLCE59.%3c5%3a%26SDG%3c90%3a.&amp;RE=MC&amp;RI=5430239&amp;Preview=False&amp;DistributionActionID=383405&amp;Action=Follow+Link" target="_blank">findings</a>&nbsp;from the Governor’s Highway Safety Association (GHSA) released in February 2020.

Seasonal transitions not only can mean lack of sleep, but also allergy issues. AAA wants to warn motorists to be mindful of how medications taken to cure the seasonal flare-ups may impair their ability to drive, causing drowsiness. MANHATTAN --&nbsp;K-State Research and Extension, in partnership with the Kansas Department of Agriculture, is offering online classes at two different times to help people earn the necessary approval to sell wild morel mushrooms.&nbsp;

The classes will be offered online through Zoom on March 23 from noon to 1 p.m., and on March 29 from 6-7 p.m.&nbsp;

Morel mushrooms grow in the wild but can be hard to find. For that reason, they are highly favored among chefs and mushroom enthusiasts. False morels include a number of species that look similar but are actually poisonous.&nbsp;

The classes are intended to help ensure that wild harvested mushrooms sold as morels in the state of Kansas are safe to consume. Current regulations under KDA’s food safety and lodging program require that mushrooms picked in the wild for sale must be individually inspected for safety by a registered mushroom identifier.&nbsp;

Upon completing the class -- which includes passing an online exam -- participants will be recognized as registered morel identifiers in Kansas to meet this regulation. &nbsp;

Registration for the classes is now open at&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ksre.k-state.edu/foodsafety" target="_blank">https://www.ksre.k-state.edu/foodsafety</a>&nbsp;and costs $5. Participants will receive the Zoom link for the training after registering.&nbsp;

Saline County has reported 12 new confirmed COVID-19 cases since Wednesday, pushing the overall county total above 6,000 for the pandemic.

Saline County reports 12 new COVID-19 cases since Wednesday

WASHINGTON&nbsp;– U.S. Senator Jerry Moran (R-Kan.) today announced $8,903,293 in U.S. Department of Transportation grants for 23 Kansas airports to help with expenses related to COVID-19. 

The grants were made available by the Federal Aviation Administration as part of the&nbsp;Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations (CRRSA) Act.

Moran: Salina, area airports to receive DOT grant funds

At approximately 11:42 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 23, 2021, Salina Fire Department EMS and Salina Police Officers were dispatched to the 700 block of North Fourth Street for a report of the sound of gunfire and someone screaming. 

Upon arrival, Salina Police Officers located a female inside a vehicle at 731 North Fourth Street. This female had a gunshot wound and was pronounced deceased by Salina Fire Department EMS personnel. The deceased female was identified as Courtney Ann Hoffman, 36 years old, of Salina.

The Salina Police Department investigated innumerable leads during this homicide investigation. This resulted in Nelson Gerrod Hull III being identified as the suspect in the killing of Courtney Ann Hoffman. An arrest warrant for Murder in the 1st Degree was issued by the Saline County District Court for Hull.

Law enforcement is actively seeking the whereabouts of Hull and he should be considered armed and dangerous. If you have any information pertaining to Hull’s current location contact 911 immediately.

KIPP -- Four hundred round bales were destroyed in a fire late Thursday night just south of Kipp.

The fire was reported at 11:40 p.m. after someone noticed an orange glow just south of town, Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said this morning.

The 400 hay bales belonged to Dwight Tarn, 50, of rural Kipp. Loss was estimated at $20,000.

Soldan said the cause of the fire is not known at this time. 

Firefighters with Rural Fire District No. 1 responded to the blaze and remained on the scene throughout the night to monitor the fire, Soldan explained.

400 round bales destroyed in blaze south of Kipp

A car was damaged in a hit-and-run accident late Thursday afternoon in central Salina.

A vehicle described as a gray four-door sedan was westbound in the 400 block of Charles Street when it struck a legally parked 2007 Toyota Yaris, according to Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester. The incident occurred at 5:50 p.m. Thursday.

A witness told police that the gray vehicle was possibly a 2000s model Chevy Impala.

The Yaris sustained damage to the driver side mirror and the wheel well, and the front bumper had been detached, Forrester noted.

Police are looking for a pickup that was stolen from a northwest Salina neighborhood early Thursday.

Thomas Wilcome, 50, of Salina, told police that sometime between midnight and 6 a.m. Thursday, someone stole his 1990 GMC 1500 pickup that was parked on the street in the 100 block of North College Avenue, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester reported this morning. Wilcome had left the keys inside the vehicle, Forrester noted.

The pickup, valued at $3,500, is described as being maroon in color with silver bed rails and silver running boards. It had a Kansas license plate  of 366 MNV.

Why do you seem to put so much emphasis on teaching young children about money? Isn’t there time for that later when they’re older?

I firmly believe that one of the best ways you can make sure your kids are ready to face adulthood when the time comes is to teach them how to handle money at an early age. The reason? Learning about money, and how to manage it in a wise, mature fashion, is about a lot more than just dollars and cents.

There’s a quote from author Andy Andrews I really love. He says, “The goal is not to raise great kids. It’s to raise kids who become great adults.” If you think about it, there’s a subtle but powerful distinction here.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.daveramsey.com/blog/why-kids-shouldnt-get-an-allowance" target="_blank">Kids</a>&nbsp;might behave well out of a sense of obedience or even fear, but that doesn’t mean they’ll do what’s best for them once they’re on their own. To raise kids who later become great adults, you have to begin instilling good character traits in them at an early age.

Work equals money. When you teach kids to&nbsp;work, you’re teaching them responsibility. Whether it’s chores around the house or a job at the mall, work involves accountability and following through on tasks. Work shows kids&nbsp;they&nbsp;are in control of their actions, and that&nbsp;they&nbsp;will reap the rewards or consequences of those actions.

Teaching kids to&nbsp;<a href="https://www.daveramsey.com/blog/save-like-you-mean-it" target="_blank">save</a>&nbsp;teaches them patience. Today’s world is one of instant gratification, and saving money makes you slow down and think. It also shows kids they can’t have every little thing they want the moment they want it.

When you teach kids to&nbsp;<a href="https://www.daveramsey.com/blog/why-giving-makes-you-feel-good" target="_blank">give</a>, you’re teaching them generosity.&nbsp;A willingness and desire to give doesn’t always come natural to us when we’re young. Parents should encourage and model the act of giving, because generosity is a wonderful character trait and a powerful weapon in the fight against selfishness and greed.

Finally, teaching kids to&nbsp;<a href="https://www.daveramsey.com/blog/fun-money-in-budget" target="_blank">spend</a>&nbsp;responsibly is a great way to teach wisdom. All kids totally get the idea that spending money is fun. That’s a no brainer. But when you get involved in teaching spending as something that should be thought through and done with care and reason, you’re imparting the idea of using good judgment and thoughtfulness before taking action.

PRATT – Lesser and greater prairie chicken population trends will be the focus of upcoming aerial surveys.

The aerial surveys conducted by helicopters will begin Tuesday and continue through early May in areas of Kansas containing prairie chicken habitat. 

The surveys are conducted annually by the Western Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies (WAFWA) and the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism (KDWPT) to document population trends and determine how populations are responding to current management strategies.

From sunrise until three hours after sunrise, KDWPT biologists will work with a contracted aerial service company to operate three helicopters throughout the state’s prairie chicken range (western, northcentral and eastern portions of the state). Surveys will be conducted during the prairie chicken lekking period when the birds are displaying on leks – also called “booming grounds.” While surveying, the helicopters will fly pre-determined routes at altitudes less than 50 feet above the ground.

Data collected from the aerial surveys will be used in conjunction with data from KDWPT’s annual ground surveys to inform future management efforts.

Initial results will be available beginning July 1.
