The American Red Cross is in great need of blood, and you can help.

A blood drive is scheduled for Monday through Wednesday in Salina and many appointment times are still available, according to Teri Novotny of the American Red Cross.

"The Red Cross is now experiencing the lowest blood donor turnout since the pandemic began and more blood donors are needed now," Novotny told Salina Post. "Right now our appointments are far from full. We have almost 150 openings. I’m hopeful we’ll see more folks making appointments in the next day or two."

The Salina Community Blood Drive is scheduled for noon to 7 p.m. Monday and Tuesday and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday in the multi-purpose room of Sunrise Presbyterian Church, 825 E. Beloit Avenue.

To schedule an appointment, call 1-800-733-2767 or visit <a href="http://redcrossblood.org">redcrossblood.org</a> and enter "Salina." With more people receiving a COVID-19 vaccine, the American Red Cross needs to known the vaccine manufacturer's name for each vaccinated donor in order to determine blood donation eligibility.

Three-day Red Cross blood drive begins today in Salina

A hundred years ago this month, 16-year-old Mary White struck her head on a low-hanging limb while riding her horse in Emporia, slid dazed from the saddle, staggered a bit and fell unconscious to the ground. The accident did not surprise anyone who knew her, for Mary was a rambunctious girl who rode horses and drove cars with the same reckless intensity; she’d already had a few mishaps that left more than her pride bruised.

On that Tuesday afternoon, Mary was riding a skittish mare named Hardtack. Having changed from school clothes to her riding khakis, she aimed as usual for the green country roads north of Emporia. But on Merchant Street — about where the parking lot of the Emporia State University library is now — she was distracted by the passing of a high school friend, a boy delivering copies of the Emporia Gazette on bicycle. Mary turned to wave, but she apparently used her bridle hand, which caused Hardtack to dart from the road and plunge beneath a catalpa tree. Still turned to wave, Mary may not have seen — or could not avoid — the collision with the fatal branch.

Mary was taken to the White family’s temporary home in Emporia, where she lay unconscious in the front room. The family’s large home (“<a href="https://www.kshs.org/p/red-rocks-home-of-the-william-allen-white-family/19569">Red Rocks</a>,” named for Estes Park, their favorite Colorado vacation spot) was undergoing renovation. Her father, editor William Allen White, was back east on business. He was informed of the accident by telegram, and the tone suggested it was just another of Mary’s accidents — but her mother, Sallie, declared the “Horse absolutely has to go.”

When Mary’s condition did not improve, her doctor X-rayed her head, revealing a skull fracture.

William Allen White was en route back to Emporia and received the news by telegram in Chicago. Her funeral was held that Monday at the First Congregational Church at Emporia, and the next day her father sat in his office at the Gazette and hammered out on his typewriter&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kshs.org/kansapedia/mary-white-obituary/10159">an editorial about his late daughter</a>. The piece is remarkable in that White describes his daughter’s life with emotion, but without resorting to much sentimentality.

Mary White, nearly 17, comes to us as a real person, “as full of faults as an old shoe.” She struggled with her grades, cared little about clothes, and joined the Congregational Church not because of any particular religious conviction but because she felt it was the best way to help people. “She hungered and thirsted for righteousness,” her father recalled, “and was the most impious creature in the world.”

She loved Twain and Dickens and Wells, was an aspiring cartoonist, worked on the high school yearbook and had a sharply mocking sense of humor. She had many friends, both white and Black, and fought to give the “colored” students at her high school a lounge so that they could study in comfort as easily as the white children. She chaired a committee to make sure the poor at the county home had a proper Christmas dinner. She delighted in giving equal opportunity rides in the family car.

She was a tomboy, her father tells us, who preferred her hair in pigtails rather than a more grown-up cut because she could get away with more mischief. On the day of her death, she had been called to the principal’s office — for lampooning, in a piece of art, the principal. Her male friends ranged from newsboys to university professors, including her Latin instructor, William L. Holt, who was among her pallbearers.

“Above every other passion of her life was her passion not to grow up, to be a child,” William Allen White said.

Newspapers across the county picked up White’s editorial (often wrongly called an obituary) and it was soon reprinted in magazines, anthologized and used in dozens of textbooks. For decades, it was required reading for many Kansas high school students. In addition to being a mostly clear-eyed tribute to a lost daughter, White’s piece is remarkable for its discussion of race in a time when the Ku Klux Klan was a powerful political machine that paraded in hoods down the main streets of many Kansas towns.

If there is a place in the editorial where White allowed his fatherly love to overcome his journalistic instincts, it may be where he claimed that Mary had no interest in boys and did not want to grow up. This is gently pointed out in a remarkable and authoritatively researched 2010 children’s book, “<a href="https://www.watermarkbooks.com/product/prairie-peter-pan-story-mary-white">A Prairie Peter Pan: The Story of Mary White</a>,” by&nbsp;<a href="https://kansasreflector.com/2020/10/31/when-real-american-william-allen-white-ran-for-office-to-save-kansas-from-the-kkk/">Beverley Olson Buller</a>.

“At 16, Mary acted much as she always had,” Buller writes. “But friends noticed small changes. One friend saw Mary with a boy from out of town. To another, Mary showed an interest in face cream. She wrote an essay in language class suggesting girls pay on dates with boys.”

Having a famous father also seems to have been a source of inner conflict for Mary.

“I’m sick and tired of being William Allen White’s daughter,” she once told a teacher, according to Buller. Her privilege was such that, at her birth, President Theodore Roosevelt telegrammed the family congratulations from the White House. At the time of her death, she had already been accepted to Wellesley. The exclusive women’s college dedicated its 1926 yearbook — the year Mary would have graduated — to her memory.

Yet, despite the good fortune to be born to a famous family, there is something about Mary White’s adventurous and sometimes rebellious nature that bridges class divisions.

Here was a generous and reckless and puckish soul who was taken, by bad luck and her own folly, on the very cusp of adulthood. Death is the great equalizer among families. We feel a tinge of panic in reading of Mary White’s death, even so long after the fact, because no amount of money or influence can claw back those we loved from the undiscovered country.

I have a slight connection to Holt — the pallbearer and Latin teacher — because I own what was his house on Constitution Street. Mary might have come here to visit Bill and his wife, Martha. The house is a rambling Princess Anne, and the intervening century has not been kind, but there is comfort in the stained glass that remains above the large square windows in the parlor and living rooms; both are art nouveau designs of torches of knowledge that are flanked by fleurs-de-lis. When the sun is low in the west and the windows illuminated by shafts of distant fire, it is difficult to walk past without pausing at their beauty.

I wonder if Bill Holt — or even his friend, young Mary White — on some long-ago evening also paused and reflected on the meaning of those blazing torches. Would she have felt the same? Books were important to her, so perhaps.

One of the best photos of Mary shows her leaning against a stone column, at the entrance of some serious building, an open book in her hands. You can see a near life-size cutout of the photo at the visitor’s center at Red Rocks, which is now a state historic site at Emporia. During tours of the home you will see a few items that belonged to Mary — riding gloves, as I recall, and a few pieces of schoolgirl art — and see the room that was being remodeled for her.

We don’t know what Mary would have become if she had survived that ill-fated ride in 1921. She may have lived up to the promise of her station and talent, or not. I’ve always suspected she was more of a hellion than has been popularly portrayed, particularly in the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.amazon.com/Mary-White-Ed-Flanders/dp/B08XWPJMY6/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&amp;keywords=mary+white&amp;qid=1619802356&amp;s=instant-video&amp;sr=1-1">1977 made-for-television movie</a>&nbsp;with Kathleen Beller in the title role. But what we do know about her, from the editorial eulogy and other clues, is that — like her father — she refused to look away from the injustices of her day.

A hundred years later, we need more of that youthful activism now. The injustices that drove Mary White to help feed the poor and advocate for equality remain. As we carry her life story into a new century, we should remember what was important to this impulsive 16-year-old whose untimely death has been woven into the fabric of Kansas culture.

When the sun is low in the west and the windows illuminated by shafts of distant fire, it is difficult to walk past without pausing at their beauty.I wonder if Bill Holt — or even his friend, young Mary White — on some long-ago evening also paused and reflected on the meaning of those blazing torches. Would she have felt the same? Books were important to her, so perhaps.One of the best photos of Mary shows her leaning against a stone column, at the entrance of some serious building, an open book in her hands. You can see a near life-size cutout of the photo at the visitor’s center at Red Rocks, which is now a state historic site at Emporia. During tours of the home you will see a few items that belonged to Mary — riding gloves, as I recall, and a few pieces of schoolgirl art — and see the room that was being remodeled for her.<figure>

 </figure>We don’t know what Mary would have become if she had survived that ill-fated ride in 1921. She may have lived up to the promise of her station and talent, or not. I’ve always suspected she was more of a hellion than has been popularly portrayed, particularly in the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.amazon.com/Mary-White-Ed-Flanders/dp/B08XWPJMY6/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&amp;keywords=mary+white&amp;qid=1619802356&amp;s=instant-video&amp;sr=1-1">1977 made-for-television movie</a>&nbsp;with Kathleen Beller in the title role. But what we do know about her, from the editorial eulogy and other clues, is that — like her father — she refused to look away from the injustices of her day.A hundred years later, we need more of that youthful activism now. The injustices that drove Mary White to help feed the poor and advocate for equality remain. Beloit's Long wins award from University Honors Program at Nebraska

MANHATTAN — The&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cancer.k-state.edu/" target="_blank">Johnson Cancer Research Center</a>&nbsp;at Kansas State University has selected 14 graduate students to receive cancer research awards to support their summer research endeavors. Graduate Cancer Research Awards are made on a competitive basis to provide outstanding graduate students the opportunity to conduct their cancer research and publishing full-time during the summer without the interruption of classes. "These are the workhorses of the laboratory," said Sherry Fleming, the center's director and a professor of biology. "Their work is critical to the lab's success and most of the students continue on to become scientists studying cancer and related areas that contribute to the fight against cancer." The awards generally provide $5,000 to $7,500 to graduate students working in a Johnson Cancer Research Center member lab. The funds allow them to spend more time working on research than on non-academic jobs. The Johnson Cancer Research Center, a unit of the university's College of Arts and Sciences, supports the cancer research and training of its faculty members and their undergraduate and graduate students. All of its programs are funded through private gifts. This performance starts at 5 p.m. at the outdoor public plaza near the corner of N. Santa Fe Avenue and W. Ash Street.&nbsp;Bring your lawn chairs to enjoy the jazz combo’s entire set, or stop by as you check out downtown arts offerings, shop, or grab dinner. Masks are required, per City of Salina Ordnance.

The musical group is made of up eight Salina Central High School (CHS) students and is organized by Ben Rohrer, with rehearsals run by the students. This year’s leader is senior bassist Nelson Gutsch, who will attend Oberlin Conservatory of Music in the fall.

The Salina Central combo had its beginnings in 1995-96. A small group of SCHS students, Grant Mathews (drums), Mike Weber (keyboard), Stephen Rogers (saxophone), and Michael Hamilton (bass) started rehearsing in Mathews’ basement. They wound up getting several gigs during their high-school years. The combo evolved into a student group that rehearsed at Central before school, and has existed ever since.

The group was the featured jazz group at two Kansas Music Educators Conventions – one in 1999 and again last year in 2020. Group members say among its more memorable recent performances was in June 2020, when during the pandemic the combo snuck over to Eric Stein Stage in Oakdale Park and performed a set during the time slot they’d been scheduled to play at the River Festival, had it not been cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Salina Central Jazz Combo to perform First Friday concert

If floorboards could speak, what stories they would tell! Join Judy Lilly as she shares a few stories of the upstairs rooms of Salina’s downtown buildings. 

Since Salina’s beginning in 1858, second stories along Santa Fe and Iron Avenues held business, amusements, shopping and all manner of services – dentists, dressmakers, milliners, shoemakers, tailors, beer joint owners and more. Hear stories of the upstairs downtown, sometimes short-lived, always varied. 

Lilly is a writer, local history researcher, and member of Western Writers of America.

Scattered storms are expected tonight as a cold front pushes south through the state.

According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, a few strong storms will be possible for areas generally northwest of Hutchinson to Marion line. 

The stronger storms will be capable of nickel size hail and wind gusts of 50 to 60 mph, the weather service noted.

SANTA FE, N.M.&nbsp;- The National Park Service (NPS) is currently working on the Pike National Historic Trail Feasibility Study, and public input is needed. 

The study will evaluate the eligibility, suitability, and feasibility of designating the route taken by Zebulon Pike’s 1806-1807 expedition as a new national historic trail.

Lieutenant Zebulon Pike’s expedition was among the first United States government-ordered, American led explorations into the southern portions of the Louisiana Purchase. The expedition traveled approximately 2,700 miles in present-day Colorado, Kansas, Louisiana, Missouri, Nebraska, New Mexico, and Texas, with an additional 1,000 miles of trail in Mexico.

The NPS will hold a series of virtual public meetings in May and June, 2021. Everyone with an interest in the trail and its history are invited to attend. Each on-line meeting will provide an opportunity to learn about the trail study process, ask questions, and submit written comments to be included in the report.&nbsp;&nbsp;Meetings are organized by state.&nbsp;One meeting will be conducted in Spanish.

Genetic advances give gardeners many choices

MANHATTAN – There was a day, says Ward Upham, when it was very easy to decide which sweet corn variety to plant.&nbsp;

“You simply chose a cultivar and planted when the soil temperature reached 55 degrees,” said Upham, a horticulture expert at Kansas State University. “Now it has become more complicated due to genetic advances in sweet corn.”&nbsp;

Breeders have successfully incorporated certain genes to improve upon what was once considered ‘standard’ sweet corn, Upham said.&nbsp;

Here’s a rundown of what to know about each type of sweet corn commonly available to homeowners.&nbsp;

According to Upham, “this our ‘old’ sweet corn and contains a ‘sugary gene,’ called&nbsp;su. Standard corn should be isolated from corn, popcorn, supersweets and ornamental corn – or, not planted within 200 to 250 feet or differ in maturity by 12-14 days.&nbsp;

Plant standard sweet corn when the soil temperature reaches at least 55 degrees F. Upham’s recommended varieties include Honey and Cream, Silver Queen, Sterling Silver, Jubilee, and Merit.&nbsp;

These have up to three times the sweetness of standard corns and hold their sweetness longer after harvest due to the&nbsp;sh2&nbsp;gene. “They do have some drawbacks such as tougher kernels and a lack of some of that good ‘corn’ flavor,” Upham said.&nbsp;

Supersweet corn also needs to be isolated from other sweet corn types and are sensitive to cooler soils.&nbsp;

Plant when the soil temperature reaches 65 F. Upham’s recommended varieties include Candy Store, Florida Staysweet, Sugar Loaf, Sweet Time, and Sweetie.&nbsp;

Upham said these are probably the most popular type of sweet corn grown due to their tender kernels, good flavor and less sensitivity to cool soils. Plant when the soil temperature reaches 60 F. The sugar enhanced, which benefit from the&nbsp;se&nbsp;gene, do not need to be isolated, other than from the supersweets.&nbsp;

“They hold their post-harvest sweetness longer than standard types but will not hold sweetness as long as the supersweets,” said Upham, who recommends Bodacious, Ambrosia, Sweet Temptation, Delectable, and Miracle.&nbsp;

These include a blend of genes from standard, supersweet and sugar enhanced types, in hopes of combining the best characteristics of each. Upham recommends Serendipity, Polka, Avalon, and Frisky.&nbsp;

Sweet Corn Primer: Which variety do you prefer?

Lights, camera, action! The cameras roll as the actors say their lines, and the commercial is recorded. That’s a frequent occurrence in a Hollywood studio, but this filming took place in a rural Kansas barn.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Last week we met Kevin and Julie Kirkwood of Kirkwood Kreations Photography. Kevin and Julie are farmers and award-winning photographers who specialize in farm and ranch landscape scenes.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

One day in 2013, Kevin learned of an unusual request. Marci Penner’s Kansas Sampler Foundation and the Kansas Barn Alliance sent the word that a New York film director was looking for a picturesque barn in which to film a Coca-Cola commercial. People were encouraged to submit photos of suitable barns.&nbsp;

Kevin realized that he and Julie had a photo of a barn which would be ideal. The photo had been taken when Kevin was out for a ride in Dickinson County with Julie and her father and stepmother, Larry and Donna Schlappi. “We were drivin’ down some road and as we drove by this barn, Larry said, ‘Hey Julie, your grandfather and your great-grandfather and I used to farm that land and we used that barn,’” Kevin said.&nbsp;

Kevin took a picture of it. It was a classic Kansas scene: A weathered wooden barn, surrounded by a field of golden wheat.&nbsp;

When the call came for photos, Kevin submitted his barn picture. Out of 2,000 barn photos, the picture that was selected was Kevin’s.&nbsp;

Zach Lowry was the New York film director. He and his business partner Luke Rafferty were students at a film school in New York. They had an idea for a Coca-Cola commercial which they wanted to produce and sell to the Coca-Cola company. Their idea for the Coke commercial was based on the 50th&nbsp;anniversary of the creation of Coca-Cola and the 50th&nbsp;anniversary of the Ford Mustang.&nbsp;

The script for the commercial described a little boy and his grandfather, going into an old barn on a hot summer day. The grandfather shows the boy an old, beat-up Mustang automobile. The two work on restoring the Mustang while, of course, consuming some tasty bottles of Coke. The next scene, presumably years later, features a grown-up young man walking into the barn to see the beautiful, fully restored candy-apple red Mustang. He takes it for a drive, while drinking another bottle of Coke. He glances at a black-and-white photo hanging on the rearview mirror, showing him and his grandfather together. The commercial ends with an aerial view of the Mustang zipping along the wide-open country roads.&nbsp;

Zach notified Kevin Kirkwood that the exterior of the barn looked ideal for filming. Unfortunately, the inside of the barn was a different story. The interior needed major renovations for the barn to be workable.&nbsp;

Kevin tracked down the barn owner, Lonnie Heigele who lives at the nearby rural community of New Cambria, population 126 people. Now, that’s rural. Lonnie gave permission for the renovations because the project would help the students at the film school.&nbsp;

Kevin, Julie, and friends set out to make the renovations. It was like an old-fashioned barn-raising, with volunteers pitching in together. Others donated props, including a beautifully restored Mustang.&nbsp;

In three days during 2014, Zach. Luke, and seven New York film students filmed the video in the barn in Kansas. In the end, Coca-Cola did not purchase the commercial, but the students received an invaluable experience. In 2015, the commercial was revealed at a special announcement in Chapman.&nbsp;

Zach stated at the announcement that he was blown away by the hospitality and support which he found in rural Kansas. Folks in Kansas even helped out when Luke’s own car broke down. “This (project) took months and months of work and dedication and the unbelievable, indescribable generosity of the people in Kansas,” Zach said. That’s a frequent occurrence in a Hollywood studio, but this filming took place in a rural Kansas barn.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Last week we met Kevin and Julie Kirkwood of Kirkwood Kreations Photography. Kevin and Julie are farmers and award-winning photographers who specialize in farm and ranch landscape scenes.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;One day in 2013, Kevin learned of an unusual request. Marci Penner’s Kansas Sampler Foundation and the Kansas Barn Alliance sent the word that a New York film director was looking for a picturesque barn in which to film a Coca-Cola commercial. People were encouraged to submit photos of suitable barns.&nbsp;Kevin realized that he and Julie had a photo of a barn which would be ideal. The photo had been taken when Kevin was out for a ride in Dickinson County with Julie and her father and stepmother, Larry and Donna Schlappi. “We were drivin’ down some road and as we drove by this barn, Larry said, ‘Hey Julie, your grandfather and your great-grandfather and I used to farm that land and we used that barn,’” Kevin said.&nbsp;<figure>

It was a classic Kansas scene: A weathered wooden barn, surrounded by a field of golden wheat.&nbsp;When the call came for photos, Kevin submitted his barn picture. Out of 2,000 barn photos, the picture that was selected was Kevin’s.&nbsp;Zach Lowry was the New York film director. He and his business partner Luke Rafferty were students at a film school in New York. They had an idea for a Coca-Cola commercial which they wanted to produce and sell to the Coca-Cola company. Their idea for the Coke commercial was based on the 50th&nbsp;anniversary of the creation of Coca-Cola and the 50th&nbsp;anniversary of the Ford Mustang.&nbsp;The script for the commercial described a little boy and his grandfather, going into an old barn on a hot summer day. The grandfather shows the boy an old, beat-up Mustang automobile. The two work on restoring the Mustang while, of course, consuming some tasty bottles of Coke. The next scene, presumably years later, features a grown-up young man walking into the barn to see the beautiful, fully restored candy-apple red Mustang. He takes it for a drive, while drinking another bottle of Coke. He glances at a black-and-white photo hanging on the rearview mirror, showing him and his grandfather together.
