MARION -- A minor earthquake rattled part of Marion County Friday afternoon.

According to the Kansas Geological Survey, the 2.3 magnitude quake struck at 3:56 p.m. southeast of Marion. It was centered just west of Wagonwheel Road between 170th Street and 180th Street.

There have been 14 new positive COVID-19 cases reported in Saline County since our last update on April 28.The total number of positive cases for Saline County to 6,216.

The UK variant, B.1.1.7, has been identified in one of the positive cases in Saline County.

UK variant ID'd in Saline County; 14 new COVID-19 cases

United States Senator Jerry Moran was in Salina today to speak at the Schwan's construction site concerning a $3.8 million federal grant the City of Salina has received in connection to the expansion.

U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo today announced that the department’s Economic Development Administration (EDA) is awarding a $3.8 million CARES Act Recovery Assistance grant to the City of Salina for drainage and road improvements to allow for the Schwan's expansion.

The EDA grant, to be matched with $939,200 in local investment, helps pave the way for the Schwan's expansion, the U.S. Department of Commerce noted.

On Aug. 10, Schwan's announced the 400,000-square-foot expansion of its pizza manufacturing facility at the Salina Airport Industrial Center, bringing with it 225 new full-time jobs by 2023. The move also helps secure the future of more than 1,100 current jobs at the Schwan's facility.

“President Biden is committed to unleashing the full power of the federal government to ensure our nation not only recovers from this pandemic but builds back stronger,” Raimondo said in a news release from the U.S. Department of Commerce. “This EDA investment in Salina will provide infrastructure improvements needed to support the expansion of a major food manufacturer – creating a stronger, more resilient regional economy.”

“Strong local economies are key to recovering from this pandemic, and federal investments like this one help accomplish important regional economic development goals,” Moran said. “This grant will support local business expansion in Salina, keeping jobs in the area and creating new opportunities for the local workforce. I will continue to work with our federal agencies to make certain that Kansas is a priority when these resources are distributed.”

Salina City Commissioners are scheduled to discuss on Monday filling a vacancy on the commission after loved ones of Rod Franz submitted on his behalf a letter of resignation.

In a letter to Mayor Melissa Hodges, Chris Franz, Brian Franz, and Gayle Martin, all who have power of attorney for Franz, wrote:

We are writing on behalf of City Commissioner Rod Franz to submit his resignation from the Salina City Commission effective April 29, 2021. This move will allow Rod, his family, and partner to concentrate on his recovery from injuries sustained in an April 6, 2021 fall.

Rod's entire career and retirement years are devoted to public service and doing what is best for his community. We thank you, his fellow city commissioners, city staff and advisory board members for their past and future professionalism and assistance in emulating his devotion and leadership.

After his election in November of 2019, Franz began a two-year term on Jan. 13, 2020. His term was set to expire on Jan. 10, 2022, according to information from the city.

Both Kansas statute and city code allow for the remaining city commissioners to appoint someone to fill the remainder of a vacant commission position.

During their regular Monday meeting city commissioners will be asked by staff to consider formalizing an agreed upon format to fill the vacancy created by the Franz resignation.

Abilene physicians issue warning about scam

Police are investigating the theft of three catalytic converters from vehicles belonging to a Salina business.

Sometime between April 12 and Monday, someone cut the catalytic converters from a Ford F350 pickup and two Ford F450 pickups belonging to J. Carlson Services, Inc., 1104 W. South Street, according to Salina Police Captain Gary Hanus. 

The catalytic converters were valued at $2,500. Damage to the pickups was estimated at $1,300.

It isn't often that a trash truck dumps its load in a field, but that was the case Thursday afternoon east of Mentor.

Deputies and firefighters from Rural Fire District No. 2 were sent to the 9900 block of S. Ohio Street at 1:47 p.m. for the report of trash burning inside a Salina Waste Systems 2016 Freightliner trash truck, Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said this morning.

The trash truck dumped part of its load in a field so that the burning trash could be extinguished, he said.

No damage was done to the truck, Soldan said. The cause of the fire was not determined, he added.

An SUV stolen from a central Salina car lot was later located nearly 50 miles away.

Salina Police Captain Gary Hanus reported this morning that sometime between 6 p.m. Wednesday and 5:45 p.m. Thursday, someone stole a gray 2013 Ford Edge from Salina Used Cars, 833 E. Crawford. The SUV was valued at $7,900. The key fob was in the vehicle.

The SUV was later located in Junction City, where it was impounded until someone from Salina Used Cars could pick it up, Hanus noted.

A representative of Salina Power Sports, 632 S. Broadway Boulevard, told police that sometime between 1:15-1:30 a.m. Thursday, someone forcibly entered the busines via a window at the back, causing $75 in damage, Salina Police Captain Gary Hanus reported this morning. 

While in the business, the suspect loaded some tool bags with tools from within the business and placed them by a door. The suspect then exited the business and attempted to start a golf cart. When it wouldn't start, the suspect then started a red and black motor bike. After driving the bike to the rear of the property, the suspect leaned the bike against a dumpster on the property. 

The suspect did not return for any property in the business nor was the bike removed from the premises, according to Hanus.

MANHATTAN – Seniors Luke Ryan and Blake Kirchhoff posted a 1-2 finish to lead the Kansas State University crops team to a first place finish at the national invitational crops contest recently.&nbsp;

The squad jumped back into in-person competition this spring after a pause caused by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.&nbsp;

Ryan, who is from Solomon, and Kirchhoff, from Hardy, Neb., grabbed the top two individual spots, but were followed closely by teammates Evan Bott (junior from Palmer) in fourth and Trevor Mullen (junior from Salina) in twelfth.&nbsp;

The alternate team members included Alex Kaufmann (junior from Concordia, Kansas, who placed eighth overall) Jayden Strohl (junior from&nbsp;Cunningham)&nbsp;and Austin Hobbs (junior from Buffalo). All are agronomy majors at K-State.&nbsp;

The national invitational was hosted by Hutchinson Community College. K-State beat Iowa State (second) and the University of Nebraska (third). Nine four-year schools, four two-year schools, and four high school teams also competed.&nbsp;

Crops teams compete in four categories, including laboratory practical, agronomic exam, math practical and plant and seed identification. As a team, K-State placed first in lab and exam and second in math and identification. Individually, Ryan was first in all four components, while Kirchhoff tied for first in math and was second in lab and identification. Bott was third in laboratory practical.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

This was the second spring competition for K-State’s team. At the regional contest in March, K-State placed second to Iowa State. Ryan and Kirchhoff also swept the top two individual spots at regionals.&nbsp;

Last fall, K-State’s crops team won a virtual crops contest held online during the national meeting of the Students of Agronomy Soils and Environmental Sciences. Ryan and Kirchoff swept the top two spots and Madison Tunnell (senior from Overland Park, Kansas) placed fifth. Tunnell graduated in December and did not compete with the team this spring.&nbsp;

The team is coached by K-State professor of agronomy Kevin Donnelly and graduate student Sarah Zerger.&nbsp;

Crimestoppers seeks tips about shoplifting at hardware store

My wife and I are in our late twenties, we have no debt, and our household income is about $180,000 year. We’re thinking about building a home, but we’re not sure whether to build just for us, or maybe building a multi-family place so we could live upstairs, rent the rest, and make some money. Looking at the other side, you’ll make money with a multi-family construction, but it’ll probably be a pain in the butt. You’ll be giving up some things if you go that route.

Let me put it this way, Joel. I’ve owned a ton of&nbsp;<a href="https://www.daveramsey.com/smartvestor/investment-calculator?snid=tools.investingcalc" target="_blank">investment</a>&nbsp;real estate in my life, and my wife didn’t want to live in any of those properties. Still, there’s nothing inherently wrong with either decision. Just make sure your mortgage is a 15-year, fixed rate loan, and the monthly payments are no more than 25 percent of your combined take home pay. Save up for a down payment of at least 20 percent to avoid PMI, too.

Take a hard look at the numbers, and make sure you and your wife have a long, long talk about everything. You two should be in complete agreement about every aspect of this situation before moving forward!

DAVE SAYS: Good news and bad news

There is a team in Salina that is mentioned in the same breath as the universities of Texas and Wisconsin, schools that average more than 45,000 additional students in their population. It has hit the same heights as Ryerson University in Canada, a massive 44,000-student institution, and it is far better than any other school in the surrounding states.

That team is Kansas Wesleyan’s DECA squad, which recorded outstanding results at the business-based event’s international competition, contested in mid-April. Eleven of KWU’s 16 competitors advanced to the second round, eight earned top-10 finishes and Matthew Whitsitt and Karley Benson each finished third in their respective events. All told, KWU was one of 10 schools (among 300-plus competing with more than 1,000 total competitors) that had at least 10 students advance to the second round.

“You start to hear a school mentioned frequently during results, and they wind up on your radar,” said Dr. Trish Petak, chair of the Department of Business and Accounting and DECA team coach. “Two years ago, a school from Canada was mentioned over and over and my students wondered, ‘What’s that school in Canada?’ I wanted us to get to the level where people would ask, ‘What’s that school in Kansas?’”

Whitsitt (Newton) finished third in Managerial Accounting and Benson (Salina), who switched events this season to Restaurant and Food Service Management, also tallied a third-place finish.

“Placing in the top three is special, because it’s the first time anyone from KWU has done that,” said Whitsitt. “I believe it is a reflection of the investment that our advisors and professors put into students at KWU.”

“Dr. Petak suggested that I switch events this year, given my history working in food service,” said Benson. “The hands-on experience made the transition smooth, but it’s the content and skills I’ve learned at KWU that align with the objectives of DECA competition. The coursework and mentorship from the professors has given me a solid background in marketing and leadership, as well as a well-rounded base of knowledge in finance and common business practices. Our team’s success is a testament to how applicable our education is to post-graduate careers.”

KWU DECA hits new levels at international meet

Alena Tran-Nguyen and Diana Geist of Salina High School South have ranked nationally in the 86th&nbsp;Le Grand Concours<a></a>, a national competition sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of French.&nbsp;

Students were evaluated for their written, oral, and listening comprehension skills in French. In spite of the pandemic and all of the difficulties overcome in schools this past year, nearly 30,000 students in all 50 states competed in the 2021 event.

●Alena Tran-Nguyen, freshman at Salina South, received an Honorable Mention in the National rankings and placed 1st&nbsp;in the State rankings. She is a French 1 student of Brenda Geist.

●Diana Geist, senior at Salina South, received a Bronze Medal in the National rankings and placed 1st&nbsp;in the State rankings. She is a French 3 student of Jan Denning.

In Kansas, 109 students from nine schools participated in Le Grand Concours. Join the Smoky Hill Museum as it celebrates the birth, growth, and change of downtown in a new exhibit, The Crossroads.

The exhibit opens today and runs through March 26, 2022.

In 1858, the story of Salina began with a group of six individuals who envisioned a community on the central plains of Kansas. This community was not only located at a natural crossroads, but also defined a new one centered at Iron and Santa Fe avenues. This crossroads marks where Salina began. Born from a few wooden structures, downtown was once the sole destination for food, merchandise, transportation, and services.

While the city as a whole has expanded, the core of downtown morphed from one decade to the next. Leaders in the community continually sought new ways to attract business from the region. This area has constantly been building, shifting and evolving for 163 years. Each milestone is an inspiration for what lies ahead.

Within the museum’s newest exhibit, The Crossroads, visitors will learn of this fascinating story in three unique sections. In Area 1 you will learn of the birth of Salina’s downtown. Area 2 will focus on a period of growth. Lastly, Area 3 will explore a period of great change.

Through this exploration, one will see a history that solidifies the forward looking nature of the community. A city that has been unafraid to take risk and action. A place that strived to move in new directions and in doing so ensured the viability of the city’s heart.

The Smoky Hill Museum, 211 W. Iron Avenue, is a nationally accredited history museum, in the heart of downtown Salina. This free museum is open Tuesday-Friday 11 a.m.-4 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

New museum exhibit explores the history of downtown Salina

Today is Friday, April 30, the 120th day of 2021. There are 245 days left in the year.

In 1517, Londoners began attacking foreign residents in rioting that carried over into the next day; no deaths were reported from what came to be known as "Evil May Day," but about a dozen rioters, maybe more, ended up being executed.

One year ago: The number of Americans filing for unemployment benefits soared past 30 million in the six weeks since the virus outbreak took hold. The Republican-led Michigan legislature refused to extend the state's emergency declaration and voted to authorize a lawsuit challenging the authority of Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer to deal with the pandemic; Whitmer responded by declaring a new 28-day state of emergency. Hundreds of conservative activists, some openly carrying assault rifles, returned to the Michigan state Capitol to denounce the governor's stay-home order. MARION COUNTY — One person was injured in an accident just after 9:30 p.m. Thursday in Marion County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2014 Hyundai Sonata driven by Veronica A. Crabtree, 64,&nbsp; Peabody, was traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes of U.S. 50 just east of Limestone Road.

Crabtree, 64,&nbsp; Peabody, was traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes of U.S. 50 just east of Limestone Road.The Hyundai struck a 2022 Freightliner truck driven by Sekhon Ranjit&nbsp;Singhjit, 35, Fresno, CA., head-on.EMS transported Crabtree to Wesley Medical Center. Singh and a passenger in the truck were not injured. All three were properly restrained at the time of the accident, according to the KHP.
