City: New collection routes to come with waste automation

Posted Jun 15, 2021 7:12 PM

Automated waste collection is fast approaching City of Salina Sanitation customers! Waste automation begins the week of July 18.

As a reminder, the waste cart selection postcards should be responded to either online or by mail before June 18. If a customer did not receive or misplaced their postcard they can call the City of Salina General Services office at 785-309-5750, to retrieve their verification code. Once the verification code is retrieved, they must enter it on SelectMyCart.com/Salina to order their new waste cart(s). No action is necessary if customers would only like one waste cart to be delivered.

Beginning July 5, the new City of Salina waste carts will be delivered and all old city trash and yard waste carts will start to be removed. On the first regular collection day on or after July 5, please set out all old existing trash and yard waste carts for collection and removal. If customers receive their new waste cart(s), and their old trash and yard waste carts were not removed, please leave the old carts out and empty until they are. The old carts should be removed over the next few days, if not immediately. If customers find that their new waste carts were not delivered the week of July 5, it is asked that they please set out all of their existing waste carts the following week as normal, to be collected and/or removed.

When waste automation begins, the week of July 18, the new sanitation collection route map will take effect. For some customers, their collection day will remain the same, however, all customers are encouraged to check the new sanitation collection route map to stay informed. The new map can be found on the City of Salina sanitation website (salina.ks.us/Sanitation) and a paper copy of the map will be given to customers when their new waste cart(s) are delivered. The new sanitation collection route map divides the City’s routes by day moving from west to east. Monday collection for the far west side of town, and Friday for the northern and far east sides of town. The ledger, found on the bottom right of the new map, is color-coded to assist customers in determining their collection day. Monday collection being yellow, Tuesday being orange, Wednesday being purple, Thursday being green, and Friday being blue.

With many customers’ collection days changing, some will experience a gap of ten (10) or more days from their current collection day to their new collection day. The households who are affected by a ten-plus day gap are the customers located in the green portion of the new sanitation collection route map south of E. Wayne Avenue west of Ohio Street, and the blue portion of the new map, south of Magnolia Road. If you are a customer residing in one of the areas listed above, please keep an eye out for a notice arriving July 12, which explains the waste collection plan for July 19.

For the customers located in the green portion of the new sanitation collection route map, south of E. Wayne Avenue west of Ohio Street, their collection day will be changing from Monday to Thursday. For these customers, their last regular collection day before automation is July 12 and their first automated collection day will be July 22, a ten-day gap in service. The City of Salina sanitation workgroup is aware that this is a large gap in service and will be providing waste collection services to these customers on July 19 to prevent waste build-up. Meaning the week of July 18 these customers will have two collection days, Monday (July 19) and Thursday (July 22). From that week on, Thursday will be their waste collection day.

For the customers located in the blue portion of the new sanitation collection route map, south of Magnolia Road, your collection day will be changing from Monday to Friday. For these customers, their last regular collection day before automation will be July 12 and their first automated collection day will be July 23, an 11-day gap in service. The City of Salina sanitation workgroup is aware that this is a large gap in service and will be providing waste collection service to these customers on July 19 to prevent waste build-up. Meaning the week of July 18 these customers will have two collection days, Monday (July 19) and Friday (July 23). From that week on, Friday will be their waste collection day.
