Commissioners are scheduled to consider two items concerning the replacement of part of the N. Ninth Street Bridge over Mulberry Creek.

According to information from the city, the northbound bridge did not need to be replaced when the southbound bridge was reconstructed in 2003, however replacement is now necessary. The new bridge will be configured for two lanes, a 12-foot wide lane and a 14-foot wide lane. There also will be a seven-foot-wide sidewalk that will be separated by a corral rail similar to those on the Lakewood and Greely Avenue bridges.

On March 4, 2019, the city commission approved a resolution authorizing the design and construction of the bridge for an amount not to exceed $2 million, however, "upon letting of the bids for the construction, staff identified the need to increase this authorized amount in order to complete the project as originally approved." Commissioners are being asked on Monday to consider increasing that amount to $2.5 million in order to cover the cost of design and replacement of the bridge.

Bids for the bridge replacement project were received on April 8 and are as follows.

Commissioners also are being asked to consider awarding the bid for the bridge replacement to A.M. Cohron &amp; Son, Inc. According to information from the city, "A.M. Cohron &amp; Son, Inc. is a pre-qualified contractor with the Kansas Department of Transportation who has successfully performed this type of work for many years."

Appointments to two boards also are on the city agenda. Commissioners are being asked to consider appointing the following people.

Commissioners also are scheduled to consider amending sanitation fees. The comprehensive fee schedule for 2021 was approved by the commission on Aug. 17. On Sept. 28, commissioners authorized the purchase of six automated side-load sanitation packer trucks and approximately 18,800 new 96-gallon refuse carts.

According to information from the city, the current sanitation fee for one cart is $17 per month. The recommended amendment is to charge $2 per month per cart for any additional carts customers require. Currently, customers are able to place trash and yard waste bags or bulk items outside the cart for pickup at no additional charge, however, the new automated system will eliminate such collection without an additional fee. Additionally, yard waste carts will be eliminated.

Commissioners also are scheduled to consider proclaiming the week of May 9-15, 2021 as Professional Municipal Clerks Week in the City of Salina. Mayor Melissa Rose Hodges is scheduled to read the proclamation.

Other items on the city agenda for Monday include the following.

●Consider approving a resolution setting June 28 as the public hearing date for a dangerous structure located at 823 Spruce Street.

●Consider authorizing the city manager to sign a request from the Kansas Department of Revenue to exchange 2021 federal funds per the KDOT master agreement.

●Consider the purchase of 2021 vehicles and equipment and authorize he city manager to sign contracts with selected vendors.

The heavy rains prompted the National Weather Service to issue a flood warning for Saline County for the early morning hours of Sunday. In addition to the rain, up to quarter-sized hail fell in the county, while there were reports of up to two-inch hail in Lincoln County.

Additionally, the storms brought with them some wind, which remained for a bit once the storms moved through. At the Salina Regional Airport, a wind gust of 45 mph was recorded at 2:53 a.m. A wind advisory that was to be in effect until 10 a.m. this morning has been canceled.

At the Salina Regional Airport, 1.94 was reported for the 24-hour period that ended at 7 a.m. Sunday. In north-central Salina, 4 inches were reported early this morning. In southeast Salina near the Eagle Radio studios, 2.6 inches was reported.

Saline County gets soaked, other counties not so much; hail also a factor

The City of Salina has announced that crack sealing will continue this week on city streets.

Monday through Friday, APAC Shears of Salina will seal cracks on the following City of Salina streets, weather permitting:

Residents will be asked
to remove their cars from streets to facilitate the work, which will take place
generally between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. &nbsp;Access to properties within work zones will be
maintained at all times. &nbsp;“Road Work
Ahead” signs will be placed in advance of work zones, and temporary single-lane
closures are to be expected. &nbsp;Motorists
are asked to proceed with caution when approaching work zones for the safety of
the crews performing the work.

The annual crack and joint sealing
program is an important and cost-effective preventive maintenance component of
the City of Salina’s annual street repair program. Crack sealing the pavement helps prevent water
from penetrating into the pavement structure or sub-base material and aids in
reducing a number of pavement problems which include: crack spreading; formation of voids under
pavement; swelling and shrinking of sub-base materials; freeze-thaw action;
alligator cracking; potholing; and complete failure. Because of its importance and cost- effectiveness,
the Department of Public Works strives to seal each asphalt street in Salina no
less often than every seven years. Approximately 31 centerline miles of streets
will be sealed in 2021.

The $460,000 project is a major component of the City of Salina’s $4.7 million 2021 maintenance capital improvement program.

maintained at all times. &nbsp;“Road Work
Ahead” signs will be placed in advance of work zones, and temporary single-lane
closures are to be expected. &nbsp;Motorists
are asked to proceed with caution when approaching work zones for the safety of
the crews performing the work.The annual crack and joint sealing
program is an important and cost-effective preventive maintenance component of
the City of Salina’s annual street repair program. Crack sealing the pavement helps prevent water
from penetrating into the pavement structure or sub-base material and aids in
reducing a number of pavement problems which include: crack spreading; formation of voids under
pavement; swelling and shrinking of sub-base materials; freeze-thaw action;
alligator cracking; potholing; and complete failure. Because of its importance and cost- effectiveness,
the Department of Public Works strives to seal each asphalt street in Salina no
less often than every seven years. Approximately 31 centerline miles of streets
will be sealed in 2021.The $460,000 project is a major component of the City of Salina’s $4.7 million 2021 maintenance capital improvement program.

Crack sealing work continues this week on city streets 

In February, members of the East Tennessee State University (ETSU) basketball team&nbsp;<a href="https://www.tennessean.com/story/news/politics/2021/02/23/republican-state-senators-tennessee-public-colleges-stop-athletes-kneeling-during-national-anthem/4556148001/" target="_blank">locked arms and took a knee</a>&nbsp;in what&nbsp;Coach Jason Shay&nbsp;called a symbolic protest against “racial inequalities and injustices.”

The First Amendment protects such peaceful, political symbolic expression, but that did not stop a group of Tennessee state senators from calling on universities to prohibit athletes from kneeling in protest.

They&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/PaulBaileyforTN/status/1364285667077947396" target="_blank">sent a letter</a>&nbsp;to the presidents of the state’s public universities, asking them to punish such peaceful protests. “When they don the jersey of a Tennessee university, they step out of their personal roles and into the role of an ambassador of our state,” the Republican lawmakers wrote. “We expect all those who walk onto the field of play representing our universities to also walk onto the field of play to show respect for our national anthem.”

Most people stand respectfully during the playing of the national anthem. But the First Amendment gives us each the right to differ, to take a stand or to peacefully protest. Furthermore, the First Amendment protects not only verbal or printed expression but also much “symbolic speech,” or actions of expression.

In their call to discipline the basketball players, the state senators are out of bounds and acting outside the letter and spirit of fundamental First Amendment principles.

Courts have agreed that the First Amendment protects symbolic expression, including by public school students. Nearly 80 years ago, the U.S. Supreme Court declared in&nbsp;<a href="https://www.oyez.org/cases/1940-1955/319us624" target="_blank">West Virginia Board of Education v. Barnette</a>&nbsp;that public school officials could not punish students for choosing not to salute the flag and recite the Pledge of Allegiance.

The court ruled in&nbsp;<a href="https://www.oyez.org/cases/1900-1940/283us359" target="_blank">Stromberg v. California</a>&nbsp;in 1931 that 19-year-old&nbsp;Yetta Stromberg, a member of the Young Communist League, had a free-speech right to display a red flag, an emblem of opposition to the U.S. government, at the summer camp where she worked. In the landmark 1969 student-speech case,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.oyez.org/cases/1968/21" target="_blank">Tinker v. Des Moines Independent Community School District</a>, the court ruled that siblings&nbsp;Mary Beth&nbsp;and&nbsp;John Tinker&nbsp;had a free-speech right to wear black armbands to protest U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War.

The ETSU basketball players aren’t the first athletes to engage in symbolic protest — or to face a backlash for their acts of expression. Most famously, U.S. sprinters&nbsp;Tommie Smith&nbsp;and&nbsp;John Carlos, who captured gold and bronze medals respectively at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics, bowed their heads and raised their black-gloved fists in a symbolic protest seen and heard around the globe. Sports announcer&nbsp;Howard Cosell&nbsp;said it was a “silent gesture that everyone in the world would hear.”

It was heard, and Smith and Carlos suffered for using the medal stand as a platform for protest. As sports journalist and author&nbsp;Richard Hoffer&nbsp;explains, “They came home as outcasts, terrorists, when they might have been welcomed as heroes.”

In 2016, then-San Francisco 49ers quarterback&nbsp;Colin Kaepernick&nbsp;faced both support and scorn when he took a knee on NFL sidelines to draw attention to racial injustice. The action ultimately cost him his professional football career. Kaepernick isn’t the only athlete to exercise the right to symbolic speech. WNBA players<a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2020/10/16/sports/basketball/wnba-loeffler-protest-kneeling.html" target="_blank">&nbsp;have long been known</a>, on and off the court, for acting and speaking in support of social justice causes. During the summer of 2020, WNBA and&nbsp;<a href="https://mashable.com/article/lebron-james-nba-players-support-walkout-over-shooting-of-jacob-blake/" target="_blank">NBA players walked off the court</a>&nbsp;amid worldwide protests over the deaths of Black Americans at the hands of police.

Athlete activism has included not only professionals and university athletes like the ETSU basketball team, but also high school athletes across the country. Thousands of student athletes have&nbsp;<a href="https://www.freedomforuminstitute.org/2018/01/08/federal-judge-rules-student-athlete-has-right-to-kneel-during-national-anthem/" target="_blank">engaged in symbolic protest.</a>

ETSU’s Coach Shay resigned following pressure against his players. When asked if he would support the students in continuing acts of expression, the newly hired replacement coach said he would&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wjhl.com/sports/college-sports-2/etsu-bucs/etsus-new-mens-basketball-coach-addresses-kneeling-controversy/" target="_blank">work with his athletes on “communicating” to “create change.”</a>

You may disagree with the kneeling athletes or applaud the courage of their convictions. What is undeniable is that&nbsp;<a href="https://www.freedomforum.org/2021/03/31/perspective-faith-on-the-field-athletes-exercise-religious-freedom/" target="_blank">exercising the right to expression isn’t easy</a>&nbsp;— and it’s often too difficult. Government officials not only make it harder, they violate the First Amendment when they attempt to punish student athletes for their peaceful, symbolic expression.

FIRST FIVE: Student athletes have a right to peaceful protest

Today is Sunday, May 9, the 129th day of 2021. There are 236 days left in the year. This is Mother's Day. 

On May 9, 1994, South Africa's newly elected parliament chose Nelson Mandela to be the country's first Black president. 

In 1712, the Carolina Colony was officially divided into two entities: North Carolina and South Carolina. 

In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson, acting on a joint congressional resolution, signed a proclamation designating the second Sunday in May as Mother's Day.

In 1926, Americans Richard Byrd and Floyd Bennett supposedly became the first men to fly over the North Pole. (However, U.S. scholars announced in 1996 that their examination of Byrd's flight diary suggested he had turned back 150 miles short of his goal.) 

In 1945, with World War II in Europe at an end, Soviet forces liberated Czechoslovakia from Nazi occupation. U.S. officials announced that a midnight entertainment curfew was being lifted immediately.

In 1951, the U.S. conducted its first thermonuclear experiment as part of Operation Greenhouse by detonating a 225-kiloton device on Enewetak Atoll in the Pacific nicknamed "George."

In 1961, in a speech to the National Association of Broadcasters, Federal Communications Commission Chairman Newton N. Minow decried the majority of television programming as a "vast wasteland."

Belgian cyclist Wouter Weylandt lost control of his bike and tumbled down a mountain pass to his death during the third stage of the Giro d'Italia.

Five years ago: Filipinos went to the polls to elect Rodrigo Duterte, the controversial, tough-talking mayor of Davao city, to be their country's next president.

One year ago: The Food and Drug Administration approved a coronavirus antigen test that could quickly detect virus proteins from swabs that were swiped inside the naval cavity. Rock 'n' roll pioneer Little Richard, known for his piercing wail, pounding piano and towering pompadour, died in Tennessee at the age of 87 after battling bone cancer; he had helped shatter the color line on the music charts while introducing Black R&amp;B to white America.

Today in History - May 9

Normal dress for Mike Wagner is a plaid shirt, blue jeans and work boots, but this coming weekend is different.

Accompanying his long black &amp; gray beard —&nbsp;&nbsp;trimmed and groomed — the diesel mechanic and businessman from Hays, has acquired more of an Ivy League wardrobe for the grand opening of St. John’s Military School Historical Museum.

For much of the three days packed with events — many of them aiming to raise money for the museum — the 1991 SJMS graduate will don suits and neckties to greet his beloved cadet-mates, former faculty and staff, and supporters, when they visit the old campus in north Salina.

They will pay homage to the school that closed in May 2019, also reminisce and celebrate their times and blessings gained from the 131-year-old institution.

“St. John’s gave me a way to use my own skills to better myself, when I didn’t even know I had them,” Wagner said.

Founded in 1887, the tradition-rich school for boys that opened 29 years after Salina’s founding, and 26 years after Kansas statehood,&nbsp;&nbsp;closed in May 2019 after the graduation of the 131st Corps.

Reasons cited were low enrollment, higher costs, and negative publicity.

The campus at 110 W. Otis Avenue in north Salina, was transferred to St. Francis Ministries, but use of Linger Hall, the rectangular building that borders N. Ninth Street and housed classrooms for decades, was dedicated to be used as the museum.&nbsp;

It is home to more than a century of memories. Uniforms, sabres, photographs and hundreds of other artifacts, decorate the attractive hall.

Outside are bronze busts of SJMS leaders and a portion of the Moving Vietnam Memorial Wall bearing the name of U.S. Air Force Capt. Dennis Pugh, of Saline County, who died in Laos March 19, 1970.

The Old Boys Association that dissolved in 2019, transitioned its leadership to the museum board. Linger Hall was remodeled with operating proceeds from the school, said Larry Britegam, a former member of the SJMS board of trustees, and a former board chairman.

He and three other board members, Dale Browning, Rob Exline, and Tom Pestinger, were directed to transition remaining assets from the school to the museum. The trustees also created an endowment with the Greater Salina Community Foundation, Britegam said, some of which will be used to maintain the museum going forward. He added that earnings from that fund will also provide two $5,000 scholarships a year, in memory of Tom Orton.

A member of the school’s Class of 1949, Orton, of Denver, created an endowment for the museum and the scholarship, Wagner said.

Roughly 100 guests have toured the museum, mostly from a Salina Area Chamber of Commerce First Look April 22, and members of the Salina Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 809, who took a look weeks earlier.

So far, said Kent Tretheway, the volunteer director and curator, first impressions have been stellar. A U.S. Air Force veteran, he’s a member of the SJMS Class of 1971.

“They’ve been pretty well amazed at what we’ve been able to accomplish in a short time, with the number of artifacts and other memorabilia we’ve been able to accumulate and put on display,” he said.

The museum celebrates the entire history of the school, Britegam said.

This week marks the first reunion since the school closed.

“Anybody who had any attachment to the school felt the hurt. It was so very important to so many people for 131 years,” said Britegam, who attended SJMS from September 1967 through May 1969.

“There’s no way one can articulate the depth of sadness of having to close, from the young men who attended the school for 131 years,” said Dale Browning, of Denver, a member of the SJMS class of 1955.

He served as a counselor, teacher, coach, and “maintenance guy,” who was interim president from 2007 to 2009 and headmaster in 2009, and served on the board of trustees since 1976.

Browning assisted in the acquisition of Linger Hall for the museum, and will take his initial tour this week.

“I’m looking forward to it,” he said. “I couldn’t be prouder of the job they’ve done. I’m deeply grateful to Kent Tretheway for insuring the museum’s completion. He’s a devoted, committed person.”

Now the legacy of St. John’s Military School will be preserved for future generations, Browning said.&nbsp;

“The museum helps to continue the legacy of St. John’s and it’s importance to the history of Salina,” he said.

Wagner has other reasons for revelry Thursday through Sunday.

“Friday is the grand opening, my 48th birthday and our 30th class reunion,” he said. “I want this to bring the St. John’s community together along with the Salina community to perpetuate the history of SJMS.”

The president of the museum board of directors, Wagner and three other members of his class, will greet fellow duffers with a touch of outlandish dress that includes school colors, beginning at 9 a.m. Thursday for the Muleskinner four-person scramble golf tournament at Vandy’s Golf Course, (formerly Great Life), 1800 S. Marymount Road.

“We will unveil a new look for Salina golf,” he said. “It oughta be fun. I’ve never golfed a day in my life.”

His foursome includes Darren Johnson, Grapevine, Texas; Trevor Sullivan, Kansas City; and Aric Inglett, Winfield.

A slew of events on the campus that is now home to St. Francis Ministries, begin at 8 a.m. Friday morning with registration and a walk-through at the museum for SJMS alums and former faculty and staff.

The grand opening is 1 to 3 p.m. and the public is invited. Admission information and an itinerary are at&nbsp;<a href="http://sjmsmuseum.org/" target="_blank">sjmsmuseum.org</a>.

A museum barbecue and social that includes reunions of the SJMS classes of 1961, 1971, 1981, 1991, 2001, and 2011, begins at 6:15 p.m. at the Quality Inn, 2110 W. Crawford Street.

A memorial service for two St. John’s Military School icons — Liz Duckers and Donna Vanier —is 9 a.m. Saturday in Armstrong Chapel on the campus. The public is invited.

Anticipating that the chapel will fill, organizers also seek to have the service live-streamed at the museum and possibly other locations, Tretheway said. Stay tuned to&nbsp;<a href="http://sjmsmuseum.org/" target="_blank">sjmsmuseum.org</a>&nbsp;for updates on those endeavors.

A continental breakfast will follow at 9 a.m. in the museum.

Duckers was the wife of Keith Duckers, who was president/ superintendent of St. John’s from 1968 to 1993, also a former Salina mayor and city commissioner. Liz Duckers, a former reporter and columnist at the Salina Journal, was known for her gardens and landscaping on the SJMS grounds. She also edited and proofread “The Skirmisher” school newspaper, well after her retirement. The school made her an honorary colonel.

“Liz was a big part of the school for most of her adult working life,” Britegam said. “She was a teacher and a mother image. She and Keith committed their lives to helping kids. What better life is there?

“Keith was personally one of my early mentors. I have so much respect for what he did to help kids become better productive citizens.”

Donna and Jack Vanier were longtime SJMS benefactors. Examples are the Vanier Academic Center and Jack Vanier Hall on campus.

“They supported us with other projects and annual scholarships for years,” Britegam said. “Donna volunteered at the school for several years, was a board member, and did a lot of fund raising. The chapel was one of her pride and joys. She used to say ‘You can mess with any building, but do not mess with my chapel.’ ”

The memorial service is among the most important events, Browning said.

“(Duckers and Vanier) did so much for the school and also for Salina,” he said. “The service will renew our memories of two very fine ladies.”

The special weekend concludes with the Muleskinner Dinner beginning 6 p.m. Saturday at the Tony’s Pizza Events Center.

An official museum unveiling is a major reason to gather, Wagner said, and events are planned to help raise money for the completion of phase two of the museum project.

That includes building a brick walkway that takes visitors by the Muleskinner statue, Guernsey/Loy Memorial, Freedom tree, SJMS Veterans Memorials and flag pole. The walk will be lined with flag memorial markers and named pavers.

Museum leaders have a goal of raising enough money to complete phase two by the end of this year.

Moving the chapel and adding closer parking to the museum have also been mentioned as future projects, Wagner said.

“I have tremendous pride in this museum. That’s how I feel,” he said. “I’m excited.”

 </figure>For much of the three days packed with events — many of them aiming to raise money for the museum — the 1991 SJMS graduate will don suits and neckties to greet his beloved cadet-mates, former faculty and staff, and supporters, when they visit the old campus in north Salina.They will pay homage to the school that closed in May 2019, also reminisce and celebrate their times and blessings gained from the 131-year-old institution.“St. John’s gave me a way to use my own skills to better myself, when I didn’t even know I had them,” Wagner said.<figure>

 </figure>Founded in 1887, the tradition-rich school for boys that opened 29 years after Salina’s founding, and 26 years after Kansas statehood,&nbsp;&nbsp;closed in May 2019 after the graduation of the 131st Corps.Reasons cited were low enrollment, higher costs, and negative publicity.The campus at 110 W. Otis Avenue in north Salina, was transferred to St. Francis Ministries, but use of Linger Hall, the rectangular building that borders N. Ninth Street and housed classrooms for decades, was dedicated to be used as the museum.&nbsp;It is home to more than a century of memories. Uniforms, sabres, photographs and hundreds of other artifacts, decorate the attractive hall.Outside are bronze busts of SJMS leaders and a portion of the Moving Vietnam Memorial Wall bearing the name of U.S. Air Force Capt. Dennis Pugh, of Saline County, who died in Laos March 19, 1970.The Old Boys Association that dissolved in 2019, transitioned its leadership to the museum board. Linger Hall was remodeled with operating proceeds from the school, said Larry Britegam, a former member of the SJMS board of trustees, and a former board chairman.<figure>

 </figure>He and three other board members, Dale Browning, Rob Exline, and Tom Pestinger, were directed to transition remaining assets from the school to the museum. The trustees also created an endowment with the Greater Salina Community Foundation, Britegam said, some of which will be used to maintain the museum going forward. He added that earnings from that fund will also provide two $5,000 scholarships a year, in memory of Tom Orton.A member of the school’s Class of 1949, Orton, of Denver, created an endowment for the museum and the scholarship, Wagner said.Roughly 100 guests have toured the museum, mostly from a Salina Area Chamber of Commerce First Look April 22, and members of the Salina Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 809, who took a look weeks earlier.So far, said Kent Tretheway, the volunteer director and curator, first impressions have been stellar. A U.S. Air Force veteran, he’s a member of the SJMS Class of 1971.“They’ve been pretty well amazed at what we’ve been able to accomplish in a short time, with the number of artifacts and other memorabilia we’ve been able to accumulate and put on display,” he said.The museum celebrates the entire history of the school, Britegam said.This week marks the first reunion since the school closed.<figure>

The National Weather Service in Wichita has issued a wind advisory for multiple counties in our area for Sunday morning.

A wind advisory will be in effect from midnight to 10 a.m. Sunday for the following counties in our area.

Northwest winds at 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 45 mph are expected.

Gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result. Use extra caution when driving, especially if operating a high profile vehicle.

The National Weather Service in Wichita has issued a flood warning for Saline County in effect until 3 a.m. Sunday. 

At 10:47 p.m. CDT, Doppler radar indicated heavy rain due to thunderstorms. Flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly in the warned area.

Some locations that will experience flooding include Salina, Gypsum, Brookville, Smolan, New Cambria, Glendale, Salina Airport, and Kipp.

Do not drive into flooded areas or go around barricades. Nearly two feet of water will carry most vehicles away. Turn around, don`t drown.

HOPE - Three earthquakes shook parts of Dickinson County Saturday.

The first was a 3.6 magnitude quake that struck northeast of Hope at 6:04 a.m. Saturday, according to the Kansas Geological Survey. It was centered north of 800 Avenue between Rain Road and Quail Road.

The second quake, a 3.4 magnitude temblor, struck east of Hope at 12:05 p.m. Saturday. It was centered between Kansas Highway 4 (K-4) and 600 Avenue on the north and south and Rain Road and Quail Road on the east and west.

A smaller 2.9 magnitude quake struck northeast of Hope at 4:06 p.m. Saturday. It was centered just east of Quail Road between K-4 and 800 Avenue.

Three quakes shake part of Dickinson County near Hope Saturday

Dr. Shelly Cline with the Midwest Center for Holocaust Education returns as we continue focusing on holocaust education and remembrance this month. Holocaust history raises important questions about what Europeans could have done to stop the rise of Nazism in Germany and its assault on Europe’s Jews. Questions must also be asked about the responsibility of the international community, including the United States. What did the American people know about the treatment and fate of Europe’s Jews? What responses were possible? This talk will also discuss the priorities for Americans during the 1930s and 1940s and the U.S. role in the liberation of Europe.  

Dr. Cline is the Historian and Director of Education at the Midwest Center for Holocaust Education in Overland Park, Kan. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Kansas. Her research focuses on the SS Aufseherinnen in the concentration camp system and the gendered perpetration of the Holocaust. Her research has been supported by grants from the University of Kansas (KU) and Universität Hamburg. Cline has been an instructor in the KU Humanities Program and Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Department. She also served on the faculties of the Kansas City Art Institute and University of Missouri Kansas City.

Thunderstorms are expected to develop over western Kansas then spread eastward across central and northern parts of Kansas tonight. Greatest risk for severe weather is in orange shaded areas after 5 p.m. Saturday to 1 a.m. Sunday, the weather service noted.

The primary hazards will be large hail up to approximately two inches in diameter, and damaging winds up to approximately 70 mph. Additionally, an isolated tornado cannot be ruled out.

Students from Salina Area Technical College brought home 10 medals from the statewide SkillsUSA competition in late April.

The Kansas competition is typically held in Hutchinson, but because of COVID each school’s team competed on its own campus, with judges either in-person or monitoring students were via webcams.
