The average American uses only 37% of the information they learned in high school post-graduation, according to a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.studyfinds.org/survey-americans-use-37-percent-knowledge-learned-high-school/">2019 study</a>&nbsp;by H&amp;R Block.

Luckily, I am confident I’ll use much more than 37% thanks to an incredible teacher at&nbsp;<a href="https://www.usd379.org/o/clay-center-hs">Clay Center Community High School</a>&nbsp;and support from some incredible community members.

My classmates and I at CCCHS are fortunate to be taught by Rhonda Gierhan, who leads our business essentials class. An educator with 34 years of experience, Mrs. Gierhan takes on the job of ensuring her students learn skills and have educational experiences that will last a lifetime.

Mrs. Gierhan knows students often learn best when they have hands-on experiences. That’s why she challenged our class to go beyond just reading and writing about business, and to actually learn the ins and outs of business by starting and operating a business of our own.

So that’s what we did. After lots of discussion, our class identified a gap in the local market and decided to launch an apparel business representing our school. And so, the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.facebook.com/ccchsroarstore">Roar Store</a>&nbsp;was born.

From billing and invoicing to designing and producing, our class manages every aspect of our business with supervision from Mrs. Gierhan to provide spirit apparel for our students, parents and community. We also span our business to include other CCCHS classes, such as web design for our&nbsp;<a href="https://roarstore2.wixsite.com/ccchs">website</a>&nbsp;and digital media to produce commercials, and run our social media.

When we launched our small business, we were starting from ground zero. With no experience in the apparel business, we sought out to learn anything and everything we could. That’s when we turned to community members for guidance and support.

While our team is incredibly passionate about and dedicated to our business, it would have been difficult to get it off the ground without the help from members of Clay Center and the extended small business community.

If you’re looking to support students in your community who have a passion for business, here are some ways they helped us:

Helping out high schoolers who have the potential to be future leaders will only come back to benefit your community. A lot of industries tend to be exclusive and competitive, but The Roar Store received incredible support from other small businesses in our community. Our local printing shop,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.facebook.com/Gate9Graphics/">Gate 9 Graphics</a>, played a fundamental role in the launch of our business. Our friends at Gate 9 were kind enough to share lessons learned though their years of experience and gave us incredible insights on tools and equipment to use and set us off in the right direction.

The takeaway here is to not view young entrepreneurs as competition but as partners. The more you each do to bring awareness to your industry and your community, the better off you will both be!

Support unconventional ideas and programs

Our class wouldn’t have been able to launch our business without an “OK” from administrators at our school. Our class’ curriculum differs from the “norm” and it would have been easy for administrators to turn down Mrs. Gierhan’s idea and insist we follow a traditional classroom set-up. Without the opportunity to take a risk and try something new, our class would have never learned the invaluable skills of creating and operating a business, which are talents we can use long after graduation.

The “big break” for our small business came when we applied for the Stahl Family Small Business Fund’s&nbsp;<a href="https://www.stahls.com/a2z-heat-press-scholarship">Pure Imagination Scholarship</a>. The Stahl Family Small Business Fund was founded by the Michigan-based&nbsp;<a href="https://www.stahls.com/home">Stahls’</a>, a world class innovator of custom garment decoration and equipment. Stahls’ is now an industry leader, but also has vast experience as a small business, as the family-owned company founded in a Detroit garage in 1932.

The scholarship program granted us a Stahls’ entry level heat press, heat printing materials and a full year of one-on-one coaching from industry experts at Stahls’.

A scholarship program is just one incredible way for established businesses that have found success to support those just getting started in their industry.

You can also support high schoolers interested in business by making donations to educational programs or by volunteering as a coach or mentor in the industry.

OPINION: How community helped these students succeed in business

Applications are now being accepted in two categories of the Horizons Grants Program.

The Lana Jordan Developing Artist Grants and the Organizational Project Grants are now open for application. These grants support artistic growth through Saline County’s cultural and nonprofit organizations and practicing artists.

The Lana Jordan Developing Artist Grants (up to $2,000, requiring a 1:2 match) are available to any visual, performing, literary, and interdisciplinary artist who has demonstrated seriousness to an art form. Artists living in Saline County for at least one year and who are 18 years or older are eligible to apply.

The purpose of the Lana Jordan Developing Artist Grant is to:

●strengthen the ability of artists to build partnerships

●implement a public component to engage the community

Organizational Project Grants (up to $6,000, requiring a 1:1 match) provide support for projects that place the arts at the heart of community development, to build community through the arts.

The grant application deadline is Nov. 1, 2021, in either category, for projects that will occur during the 2022 grant cycle (Feb. 1 - Nov. 30, 2022.) All new applicants for the Developing Artist or Organizational Project grants must schedule a meeting with SAH staff no later than Sept. 20, 2021. All returning applicants must notify SAH staff by Oct. 4, 2021, of their intent to apply.

Additionally, Horizons Enrichment Grants (up to $500) are available on an ongoing basis, with applications submitted four to six weeks before the beginning of the proposed project. Enrichment Grants are available until Nov. 15, 2021, for projects that take place in 2021.

Horizons grant applications now being accepted

ABILENE -- An Ohio woman was arrested after more than five pounds of fentanyl was found in her car during a traffic stop on Interstate 70 (I-70) last week.

The Dickinson County Sheriff's Office reported Monday that on Wednesday morning, a member of the Dickinson County Sheriff's Office Drug Enforcement Unit conducted a stop for numerous traffic violations on a passenger car at mile marker 274 on I-70. During the stop, the deputy became suspicious of criminal activity and the sheriff's office K-9 was deployed. According to a release from the sheriff's office, 5.2 pounds of fentanyl was located in the car.

The driver, Latoya Walker, 39, of Dublin, Ohio, was arrested on requested narcotics-related charges for trafficking fentanyl.

The sheriff's office reminds the public that fentanyl can be lethal in extremely small doses. Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that is 80-100 times stronger than morphine, and has been responsible for thousands of deaths across the United States, the sheriff's office noted.

According to the Kansas Geological Survey, a magnitude 2 quake struck at 11:14 p.m. Monday in far western Saline County west of the Smoky Hill Weapons Range and southwest of Brookville. It was centered just east of the Saline-Ellsworth county line near W. Parsons Road.

Then, at 3:52 a.m., a 2.2 magnitude quake shook part of Dickinson County east-northeast of Hope. The quake was centered just north of Kansas Highway 4 approximately three miles east of Hope.

The donation was designated for the Abilene Public Transportation Fund, a fund that provides public transportation rides to and from medical appointments within Abilene city limits.

Do you have a hard time falling asleep? Or do you bolt awake at 2:00 a.m. every morning with a racing heart? According to a recent survey from our research team at Ramsey Solutions, you’re probably worried about money. In the first quarter of 2021, Americans listed “personal finances” as their top stressor. In fact, one in three of us loses sleep over it.

That’s millions of hours of lost sleep across our neighborhoods, our cities, and our country.&nbsp;

But stress itself isn’t the enemy. Anxiety is like an alarm: It alerts you to something in your environment that makes you feel unsafe, disconnected and/or out of control. It’s&nbsp;your brain and your body’s way of protecting you (even though it doesn’t necessarily feel that way).

The good news is that by getting connected with people and changing your thoughts and actions, you can begin to transform your bank account&nbsp;and&nbsp;your mental health. Here are a few practices that will help you get started.&nbsp;

Take responsibility for your personal finances

One of the most painful data points that emerged from the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ramseysolutions.com/debt/state-of-personal-finance-2021-q1-research" target="_blank">state of personal finances study</a>&nbsp;is that a third of Americans believe they won’t ever recover from the financial setbacks of the pandemic. I know that the horrors of the past year have been devastating. I’ve personally talked to thousands of you on the radio. If you’re scared or hurting, my heart goes out to you.&nbsp;&nbsp;

But here’s the reality: You cannot edit the past. The only question that matters is what you will do next. Change begins when you look in the mirror, own your grief, and decide to do things differently. Don’t sweep your money stress under the rug, or wait for some government official to come to the rescue. Starting today, chart a different path for your future.

Going (further) into debt when you’re in a bad financial situation is like drinking salt water to quench your thirst. It looks good at first, but it will kill you. Of the people we surveyed, we found that Americans with consumer debt are twice as unhappy with their lives as people who are debt-free.

If you owe money to anyone for any reason, get out of debt as quickly as possible. Do whatever it takes. Get a second or a third job, and work extra until you can say goodbye to debt forever.

Hard times will come, so instead of worrying about them we must do our best to be prepared. This is where an emergency fund comes in. An emergency fund isn’t sexy: It doesn’t compound your money, and it doesn’t get you more shiny toys in your garage. But it does help you sleep. It does help you laugh a little bit easier, and breathe a bit deeper. Once you’re debt-free except for your home, save enough money to cover three to six months of expenses. That way, when you lose your job or your HVAC unit is on the fritz, you’ll be faced with an inconvenience—not a crisis.

In addition to a financial disaster, we are living in a loneliness epidemic. People are your emergency fund for life, both the good and the bad times. If you’re stressed about money, grab a cup of coffee with an old friend. Go for a walk with your spouse. Go back to church. After all, money is just a resource that allows you to live a meaningful life—and relationships are the foundation of that life.

Take responsibility, don’t take on debt, build an emergency fund, and connect with real people in real life. You are worth being well in every area of your life, including your finances. Don’t put this off any longer!

DELONY: One-third of Americans are losing sleep over money 

Flexibility and adaptability have been the name of the game for Paula Rolph throughout her college career.

That adaptability came into play as Rolph, a second-generation KWU student, considered what to do after her Saturday graduation. She thought she’d&nbsp;go&nbsp;on to perform in music theatre&nbsp;and transition into teaching, however, the COVID-19 pandemic caused her to re-evaluate her plans.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

“In the fall of 2020,&nbsp;professional&nbsp;theatre wasn’t much&nbsp;of a thing," she said, referring to the shuttering of Broadway. “I thought, ‘I&nbsp;need another plan.’”

During her time in Salina, she performed on stage at both Kansas Wesleyan University and the Salina Community Theatre.&nbsp;At KWU, she was in The&nbsp;Spitfire Grill, Alice in Wonderland, Cyrano, The Dining Room, It’s&nbsp;A&nbsp;Wonderful&nbsp;Life: A Live Radio Play and most recently Little Shop of Horrors. At the SCT,&nbsp;her credits included Tuck Everlasting, The Music Man and A&nbsp;Gentlemen’s Guide to Love and Murder.

Throughout her time at KWU, she was a member of the&nbsp;Philharmonic Choir and played trumpet in the Wind Ensemble.&nbsp;As&nbsp;Rolph approached her senior year, the idea of music therapy swam around in her mind for&nbsp;awhile, but “it wasn’t quite clicking,” she said.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

One day,&nbsp;she was waiting for class to begin&nbsp;and thought, “Music therapy isn’t quite right for me, but I wonder if there is such a thing as drama therapy?” She began researching and learned&nbsp;that&nbsp;Kansas State University in Manhattan&nbsp;offered a master’s program.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

“I researched what drama therapy was and it clicked,”&nbsp;Rolph&nbsp;said. “I still want to do something with theatre. For me, drama therapy filled in where music therapy was lacking. I could use something that was ‘my thing’ to help people.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“Drama therapy is in the same school of thought as music therapy. It is similar in a lot of ways.&nbsp;It can be used to help people who have gone through trauma, to help them take control of a situation they ultimately didn’t have control over. You can help kids with behavioral issues learn the consequences&nbsp;of actions. They can see possible consequences of doing something without it directly affecting them. It’s only limited by your imagination.”

She works with youth at an after-school program at a local grade school, and also teaches musical theatre class at the Center for Theatre Arts at the Salina Community Theatre.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

“I see a lot of good kids&nbsp;who are&nbsp;good at heart,&nbsp;but&nbsp;lose&nbsp;their temper. This can help give me better skills to help these kids,” Rolph said.&nbsp;“I can take&nbsp;(my drama therapy degree)&nbsp;and use it to bring&nbsp;further&nbsp;awareness to the arts&nbsp;—&nbsp;but also help a&nbsp;child&nbsp;who is having behavioral issues.”&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

A native of Delphos who graduated from&nbsp;Miltonvale&nbsp;High School, Rolph said KWU was the perfect fit for her undergraduate experience.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

“Salina was close enough, but&nbsp;not too large,” she said. “If I had gone to&nbsp;KU or&nbsp;K-State after high school, it would have been overwhelming. I was familiar with Salina&nbsp;because both of my parents and my aunt&nbsp;attended KWU.&nbsp;This has been a great stepping stone in figuring out being an adult.”

Rolph said her undergraduate degree was about branching out from her small-town roots.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

“I've&nbsp;definitely grown a lot; I feel like that’s the nature of college,” she said. “I think I’ve built a really good support system of friends and professors&nbsp;while at KWU. I can call and ask&nbsp;them&nbsp;if I have questions or trouble. I think the best thing to come out of college is a good network and support system.”

During May, the FTC and federal and state organizations nationwide will celebrate <a href="https://acl.gov/oam/2021/older-americans-month-2021">Older Americans Month</a>, with “Communities of Strength” as its theme. The FTC works to protect older adults year round, through law enforcement actions and the <a href="https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/features/feature-0030-pass-it">Pass It On</a> fraud prevention campaign. Pass It On encourages people to share what they know to protect someone from a fraud, and to be a resource that others can turn to.

<a>The FTC has taken several </a><a href="https://www.ftc.gov/news-events/press-releases/2020/10/ftc-issues-annual-report-congress-protecting-older-adults">recent enforcement actions</a> to protect older adults. For example, it’s sued companies that tried to trick people into work-at-home and other moneymaking schemes, bogus credit card interest rate reduction offers, and health claims that aren’t supported by the necessary science. Some of those claims were related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

While scammers are busy, <a href="https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/features/feature-0030-pass-it">Pass It On</a> gives older adults and the people who work with them tools to fight those frauds. The campaign’s fact sheets explain 13 fraud topics, including <a href="https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/features/pass-it-on/imposter-scams/grandkid-scams">grandchild</a> and <a href="https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/features/pass-it-on/imposter-scams/online-dating-scams">romance scams</a>, <a href="https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/features/pass-it-on/unwanted-calls">unwanted calls</a>, and <a href="https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/features/pass-it-on/work-at-home-scams">work-at-home scams</a>. The campaign leverages the rich experience and accumulated knowledge of older adults, and gives them information they can pass on to family and friends, starting conversations and sharing their expertise.

Kansas Wesleyan announced Monday that it will continue a recent trend of remembering&nbsp;the&nbsp;educational history&nbsp;of the region, as KWU will grant children and grandchildren of St. Mary of the Plains College alumni a 50 percent tuition scholarship. 

The announcement follows April 13’s news of a similar scholarship being launched for families of Marymount College alumni.

The scholarship applies to new full-time, on-ground, on-campus undergraduate students beginning in the fall of 2021.

“Both Marymount College and St. Mary of the Plains helped build the small college landscape we see in Kansas today,” said Ken Oliver, KWU vice president of advancement, admissions and marketing. “We’re honored to remember both institutions with scholarship offerings.”

St. Mary of the Plains opened as a boarding school in Dodge City in September 1913, before becoming a college in September 1952. The college was accredited in 1963 and contested athletics as a part of the KCAC. It closed in 1992.

Educational records from St. Mary of the Plains are housed at Kansas Wesleyan.

The meeting is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. Tuesday in room 107 of the City-County Building, 300 West Ash Street. A time for public comment is scheduled near the beginning of the meeting.

County Commission meetings are now available by several options. The Board of County Commissioners encourage citizen participation in local governance processes. Salina Parks and Recreation invites community members to share their input regarding the future of the pond at Jerry Ivey Park at 4:30 p.m. on May 19 in room 107 of the City-County Building, 300 W. Ash Street.

Representatives from consultants to the City of Salina, the Salina Parks and Recreation Advisory Board, along with members of the Parks and Recreation Department, will conduct an open house to share information regarding adverse existing conditions with the pond water feature in Jerry Ivey Park. 

The representatives will also solicit input on potential improvements desired by citizens for the pond water feature and also general thoughts or comments for Jerry Ivey Park.

Per City of Salina Ordinance, masks are required to be worn inside the City-County Building.

ASSARIA - Multiple vehicles were damaged and multiple tools were stolen in an incident south of Assaria.

Sometime between April 28 and Saturday, someone did the following damage at a location in the 400 block of E. Lapsley Road, Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said this morning.

●Broke a window on a 1996 Chevrolet Caprice, $400 estimated damage

●Broke the windshield and back window of a 2000 Ford Taurus, $400 estimated damage

●Broke the windshield of a 1989 Chevrolet Caprice, $800 estimated damage

●Damaged a 1973 Road Ranger camper, $500

●Damaged a 1973 Homette mobile home, $700

Additionally, a red Snap-on Road Chest tool box full of hand tools and valued at $2,200 was stolen, Soldan said.

The damaged property and stolen tools belonged to Derald Blake, Assaria, Benjamin Workman, Smolan, and Brandon Clintsman, Lindsborg, Soldan said.

HAYS – The first five winners of the Robert E. and Patricia A. Schmidt Foundation scholarships to attend Fort Hays State University have been announced.

The inaugural class of Schmidt Foundation Scholars is comprised of Edwin Garcia-Arreola, Lakin; Bianca Bultman, Elkhart; Makenna Bartholomew, Gypsum; Julina Wall, Ingalls; and German Hernandez, Leoti. Those incoming freshmen will receive full-ride, $14,900 scholarships for the 2021-22 school year.

Those students’ counselors, teachers, coaches, or principals made arrangements with the FHSU Foundation last week for a surprise announcement with the students via Zoom.

Preference for these scholarships are given to first-generation students from Kansas planning to&nbsp;major in healthcare, education, business, entrepreneurship, arts, or communication programs.

The Schmidt Foundation scholarship includes 30 hours of tuition and fees for fall and spring courses, books, room and board. Recipients can renew their scholarships for up to three additional years by maintaining their academic standing and continuing to meet the scholarship requirements.

The selection committee made its selections based on&nbsp;demonstrations of strong academic ability, resilience, and the leadership skills necessary to make significant contributions to the university, the community of Hays, and the state of Kansas.

“We hoped to find students who would value the mentoring opportunities included in the Schmidt Foundation Scholars program and would make the most of the future networking connections that will come,” said Jessica Albin, case manager for FHSU’s Kelly Center and chair of the selection committee. “Bianca, Edwin, German, Julina, and Makenna are exactly the type of students we hoped to connect with through this process and we fully believe they will find great success at FHSU.”&nbsp;

Small quakes shake part of Dickinson County Sunday night

Students at&nbsp;<a href="https://polytechnic.k-state.edu/" target="_blank">Kansas State University Polytechnic Campus</a>&nbsp;recently elected new Student Governing Association, or SGA, leadership for the 2021-22 academic year. Jon Martin, junior in computer systems technology,&nbsp;Bennington, will serve as student body president and Eric Webb, junior in computer systems technology,&nbsp;Wichita, will serve as student body vice president. Both Martin and Webb previously held SGA positions. Martin served on the cabinet as treasurer, and Webb was a senator and webmaster. "While I'm president, I will be working with our student government and the administration to build a strong sense of community on campus — something that has become even more important because of COVID-19," said Martin. Webb echoes Martin's goal as many clubs dissolved during the pandemic. In the fall semester, the duo will strive to increase student involvement. "With everybody coming back after losing a year together, we want to focus on unifying the student body to bring back the sense of belonging and family to campus," Webb said. Leading by example, Martin and Webb want to remind students about the importance of academic and social clubs. Both leaders plan to revive the Association for Computing Machinery club. The association is the professional organization for computer scientists. The student chapter sponsors guest speakers, programming contests and game nights. The group also organizes open house activities and conducts tutoring sessions for computer science courses. During the pandemic, the K-State Polytechnic's SGA moved its meetings online. Every student was invited to join the weekly sessions via Zoom. SGA's new leadership will continue using the online platform to be all-inclusive, but in-person meetings following social distancing guidelines are planned. Martin is confident his team will make a positive difference. "When I decided to run, I immediately reached out to Eric, the most hardworking and responsible person I know with a real passion for our student government," Martin said. Martin also appreciates the faculty at K-State Polytechnic. "Never have I been a part of a community so dedicated to everyone's success and well-being," he said. "Professors and other staff alike are great resources. They encourage and lead you to accomplish your goals."&nbsp; &nbsp;

Across the United States, budget cuts are being made to public universities, resulting in the elimination of a wide range of college programs. While these are mainly in the arts and humanities, foreign languages and physics programs are also being canceled. Much of the drive behind this is a belief that students select the best programs and those with lower enrollments are therefore inferior.

That was the business school theory for deciding what products should remain on the store shelf.&nbsp; Calculate the space required and the profits each product produced. Then remove any product that did not “carry its weight” in making money for the big box stores. But when customers came to the general store and could not find that product they only occasionally needed, they went elsewhere to where it was available and bought their everyday products there as well.

It did not take long before the big stores returned those less-commonly-bought products to their shelves. The big stores were ultimately serving their selfish profit line, keeping the less-bought items so they wouldn’t lose customers. But they were also providing an important service in supplying their customers with the less-profitable but nevertheless vital commodities.

Our universities are in a similar situation. Thanks to the television-shows-of-the era, many students will enroll in undergraduate forensic science programs, perhaps producing twice as many graduates as law enforcement needs. Meanwhile, too few major in physics teaching, producing perhaps one graduate for every ten physics teacher vacancies. When legislators cut funding for public state universities, and push universities to treat students as customers, they ignore their the state’s need for physics teachers.

But when customers came to the general store and could not find that product they only occasionally needed, they went elsewhere to where it was available and bought their everyday products there as well. It did not take long before the big stores returned those less-commonly-bought products to their shelves. The big stores were ultimately serving their selfish profit line, keeping the less-bought items so they wouldn’t lose customers. But they were also providing an important service in supplying their customers with the less-profitable but nevertheless vital commodities. Our universities are in a similar situation. Thanks to the television-shows-of-the era, many students will enroll in undergraduate forensic science programs, perhaps producing twice as many graduates as law enforcement needs. Meanwhile, too few major in physics teaching, producing perhaps one graduate for every ten physics teacher vacancies. When legislators cut funding for public state universities, and push universities to treat students as customers, they ignore their the state’s need for physics teachers. One fact stands out in this situation: over 60 percent of U.S. public university students change their major at least once! That causes students to take more than the four years of coursework required. Most students enter college with only a faint idea of what major they want to pursue. That is where the broader range of general education courses become important and where a majority of our students come to realize where their passion is. When funding is cut to universities and they follow the student as a “customer,” our students’ lose the some of the opportunity to find their passion, as when the school cuts its foreign language or physics education programs. Keeping these lower enrollment programs is not a luxury. It is important for the future well-being of the population. I knew one administrator who would tell students: “If you find a career that you love, you will never work a day in your life!”&nbsp; By this he meant that you would go to work early and love what you do. The paycheck would arrive as an afterthought. This advantage of our traditional U.S. educational system became very evident while I was briefly at a Chinese university before the pandemic. I was invited by a student club to come talk. There were no Chinese professors present. The students were very blunt. “We want to follow our dreams.” Like their American student counterparts, 60 percent of them wanted to change their major. But they couldn’t. China dramatically expanded its universities since 1980—nearly 12-fold. Most class sizes have 60 or 120 students. There are no spare seats and no capacity for a student to change major and stay an extra year. They seized the opportunity to attend the highest ranked university their high school leaving test score will allow, and often had to select a major of temporary interest. But then they get more excited about another student’s textbooks in a different major. But they cannot change. To stay another year would deny an entering freshman. “We are stuck in our major; we cannot change.” What can I tell them? “Did your parents and grandparents have this opportunity?” I ask, knowing the answer. “No, very few could go to college. Our parents knew hunger. Our grandparents, before 1949, saw starvation,” they admitted. Students know they are more fortunate, but still limited by university capacity. “China is building even more university capacity, especially in the southern provinces,” I tell them. “Perhaps someday your children will have the opportunity to change majors and attend five years.” Meanwhile, American public universities are cutting programs. Our students will have fewer options to find a job they will love.
