Photographer Shelley Griffith is making sure people keep an eye on local business professionals.

Griffith is now exhibiting in the virtual Gallery 708 at Salina Public Library. The exhibit, Eye Do,&nbsp; will be on display at <a href="http://salinapubliclibrary.org/virtual" target="_blank">salinapubliclibrary.org/virtual</a>
until May 31. The show includes unique portraits of local business professionals that include elements that represent their careers.&nbsp;

Viewers
are encouraged to examine each portrait and try to guess what they do before reading on. Griffith says her intention behind this gallery is to “bring awareness to the community of different and unique businesses in our city and to help people put a face to
the name.”

Shelley
Griffith is a professional photographer who started her photography journey as a college student just needing that GPA booster class. She has been patiently building her skills and business over a period of 18 years. Much of her inspiration comes from life
itself and the people in it. 

Capturing moments in life that can never be recaptured drives her passion for photography. The truth of how simple and fragile life is gives her inspiration to push the limits, explore and make each session its own. Connecting to
those around her gives her purpose and keeps her looking at life with childlike eyes each time she pulls out the camera.

According to the Kansas Geological Survey, a 2.3 magnitude struck northeast of Randall at 4:52 p.m. Friday. The quake was just east of 290 Road between H Road and I Road.

The second temblor, a 2.1 magnitude quake, struck north-northeast of Randall at 6:11 p.m. The quake was centered just north of J Road between 260 Road and 270 Road.

Pay attention to the weather on Saturday!

Severe storms appear possible for Saturday afternoon and Saturday evening, according to the National Weather Service in Wichita. 

The area of greatest concern will be across central Kansas, north of Hutchinson to Salina line. All severe hazards are possible with golf ball size hail, 60-70 mph, and a tornado or two possible. 

A more conditional threat of severe storms is possible across south central Kansas late Saturday evening with golf ball size hail and wind gusts to 65 mph the main concerns.

Weather History for Friday, May 7, 2021, from the National Weather Service in Wichita: In 1927, a huge F5 tornado nearly two miles wide raced 95 miles from extreme south-central Kansas to central Kansas. The tornado killed 10, injured 300, and caused around $1.3 million damage. Most of the approximately 100 farmsteads that were hit vanished. The twister began in extreme southeast Comanche County. The vortex quickly intensified, reaching nearly one mile wide. The tornado tore through Barber, Kingman, eastern Reno and southwest McPherson counties before lifting seven miles south-southwest of McPherson. Four fatalities occurred one mile southeast of Medicine Lodge, one was two miles west of Kingman, three were in east Hutchinson, and two were in McPherson County. Damage in east Hutchinson totaled $750,000.

In 1840, the Great Natchez, Miss., Tornado roared into the record books. The huge vortex formed just southwest of Natchez just before 1 p.m. and moved northeast along the Mississippi River. The tornado killed 317 and injured 109. It was the deadliest tornado in United States history until the Tri-State Tornado of March 18, 1925, that killed 695 and injured 2,027. It is still the second deadliest United States tornado on record. It is also the only massive tornado in United States history to have killed more people than it injured, at almost a 3 to 1 margin.&nbsp;&nbsp;

According to the Kansas Geological Survey, a 3.5 magnitude earthquake struck east-northeast of Hope at 1:30 a.m. Friday.

The quake was centered north of Kansas Highway 4 between Rain Road and Quail Road.

3.5 magnitude quake shakes part of Dickinson County

Police are looking for a driver who fled the scene after a two-vehicle accident early this morning in south Salina.

Barbara Adams, 58, of Salina, was traveling northbound in the 2000 block of S. Ohio Street at 2:20 a.m. Friday in a 2002 Chevrolet Tahoe when someone in an unknown make/model of vehicle pulled out of the parking lot of Speakeasy, 2030 S. Ohio Street, to also go northbound on Ohio, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester reported this morning. 

The vehicle struck the rear driver-side quarter panel of the Tahoe, causing it to roll one time, coming to rest on its wheels facing southbound in the southbound lanes of S. Ohio Street. The driver of the vehicle fled the scene, Forrester noted.

The Tahoe had damage to both sides and the top, and was towed from the scene. The other vehicle should have damage to the passenger side, he added.

On April 30, officers were dispatched to investigate a belated shooting into an occupied building. 

It was reported that between April 26 at 12:01 a.m., and April 30 at 5:55 p.m., an unknown person or persons discharged a weapon and damaged the front door of an 85-year-old Salina resident.

The incident occurred at The Heritage at Hawthorne Village Apartments, 715 N. Ninth Street.

The investigation revealed several indentations of the man’s front door, which appears to be bullet strikes.

Severe storms expected Saturday across the area

You talk a lot about budgeting, and how important it is in getting control of your money. But don’t most people already have a good idea of what they’re spending, and how much they have in the bank, without going through all the time and trouble of developing an actual budget?

That's the word from Jewell County Emergency Preparedness Director Kevin Peroutek. 

"We've had calls, especially from those in the Formoso area but not as many you might think. The area has a history of small quakes," he said.

Another earthquake shook part of Jewell County late last night, bring the temblor total to seven.

According to the Kansas Geological Survey, a 2.8 magnitude quake struck southwest of Formoso at 11:12 p.m. Thursday. It was centered north of N Road and east of 260 Road.

JEWELL COUNTY -- Six earthquakes have rocked Jewell County thus far since early this morning, with the strongest being a 4.1 magnitude temblor.

According to the Kansas Geological Survey, a 4.1 magnitude quake struck at 6:35 a.m. Thursday. It was located southwest of Formoso, just north of M Road between 250 Road and 260 Road.

A magnitude 2.6 quake then struck at 6:47 a.m. Thursday. It also was located southwest of Formoso, a little more than a mile north of the first quake, between N Road and O Road on the south and north and 250 Road and 260 Road on the west and east.

At 7:16 a.m. Thursday, a magnitude 2.3 quake rattled the area west-southwest of Formoso. It was centered just north of O Road and just east of 260 Road.

At 8:04 a.m., a 3.2 magnitude quake struck further southwest of Formoso. It was centred north of L Road and east of 250 Road

A 3.5 magnitude quake then struck at 1:20 p.m. approximately a mile east of the 8:04 a.m. quake. It was centered north of L Road and east of 260 Road.

At 4:52 p.m., a magnitude 2.5 quake struck southwest of Formoso. It was on 270 Road between N Road and O Road.

It is a day that means so much to college students near and far, whether they are first-generation graduates or coming from a long line of alumni. It’s a day that can change lives, and it’s a true rarity in life — it’s both a start and an end. It’s a collegiate commencement ceremony, and Kansas Wesleyan’s is fast approaching.

Commencement week begins Sunday with the traditional baccalaureate service. For the second consecutive year, the service will be conducted virtually. Streaming will begin promptly at 2 p.m., and the service will feature words from multiple KWU students and performances from the Rise Up! ensemble.

The annual nursing pinning will take place at 5:30 p.m. on May 14 in Mabee Arena. The ceremony will include numerous traditions, including the Nightingale Pledge, and will send the first graduating class to experience the Nursing Education Center into the workforce.&nbsp;

The following day is Commencement Saturday, and doors will open at 8:30 a.m. at Tony’s Pizza Events Center for graduates and guests. RSVP’s were required for all in attendance at the ceremony, which will begin at 10:30 a.m. This year’s featured speaker, Montric Santee ’12, will address the more than 150 individuals expected to walk across the stage.&nbsp;

All three events will be streamed free of charge at <a href="http://portal.stretchinternet.com/KWU">portal.stretchinternet.com/KWU</a>. In addition, many of the traditional senior awards will be announced via two videos that will launch during the week on the KWU social media outlets.&nbsp;

Both graduates and those participating in the nursing pinning were allowed up to 10 guests each. This was a university decision to facilitate appropriate social distancing in both venues. Face coverings will be required for all who are in attendance.&nbsp;

KWU readies for Commencement Week

Renovations for a west Salina neighborhood park are the subject of a meeting scheduled for next week by a group of concerned citizens.

"We have been trying to get the City of Salina to do what has been promised for several years with Centennial Park. There are many older residents who were here back in the late 60s when these promises started," Molly Van Auken, Friends of Centennial Park president, told Salina Post.

"The reason for this meeting stems from us meeting with the city and the parks department last month. We were told that Centennial Park is next on the list," Van Auken explained. "Not completely sure what list they are referring to but we want to make sure that all Salina residents, but especially the residents who use Centennial Park, have their voices heard." 

The meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Thursday in the Friendship Center at Centennial Park, 746 Commanche Avenue. For persons who will not be able to attend, an online survey is available at <a href="https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/TH6LL3S">surveymonkey.com/r/TH6LL3S</a>.

According to the Salina Parks &amp; Recreation Master Plan dated July 23, 2018, the condition of the above amenities "is rather tired and in need of updating."

Master plan recommendations for the park include the following.

●Remove old driveways from the south end of the park.

●Upgrade play equipment and surfacing and consider making it a destination playground.

●Improve turf in southern half of the park and remove trees to allow for active play areas.

●Construct a loop trail or perimeter sidewalks.

●Add three to four small to medium size shelters with two to four picnic tables and one large shelter with six to eight tables.

●Remove and relocate the skate park to Kenwood Park.

●Develop pickle ball courts in the area where the skate park is currently located.

Van Auken provided her own list of issues with the park.

She noted that "the skate park is made of unsafe metal ramps and the concrete they sit on contains gaps that catch the skaters wheels causing injuries."

According to Van Auken, "the soccer field mentioned in the master plan as already existing is inaccurate. There are two goals that have been sat in the middle of an uneven area of ground surrounded by trees."

She also expressed concern that the sand in the volleyball court and sand in the playground area has broken glass and debris in it. She noted that the park is mowed only once every three weeks, has four-foot weeds around the perimeter, and has broken limbs that have fallen from past storms. Additionally, Van Auken expressed concern about weak and incorrectly positioned lighting, as well as about homeless men sleeping in the park during the past several months.

Not the first time Centennial Park neighborhood residents have met

In October of 2019, a group of park neighbors met to express concern about the undeveloped southern part of the park being rezoned so it could be used for low income housing.

“Centennial Park was to be renovated years ago. This hasn’t happened yet. Now, city officials want to zone the property for more low income housing homes. We want to hear your voices on this issue. If you live near Centennial Park or visit it frequently please come share your opinion," a flier for the meeting stated.

In an Oct. 7, 2019, interview with Salina Post, City Manager Mike Schrage said that the issue hadn't gotten that far. He said that there had only been a discussion about what might be done with the south end of the park.

"Since the master plan was published, there has been talk by the city commission about using this 2.2 acre area for housing. However, instead of houses being built, an apartment complex would be developed. Citizens within the community held an open meeting and invited the city commissioners, the mayor, and members of the parks department to attend. This meeting ended without resolution," Van Auken told Salina Post.

"Even though this section of the park is undeveloped and hardly maintained, it is still utilized. My children and I use it for flying kites, playing frisbee, catching butterflies, blowing bubbles that span as far as we can see, and so much more. I see people daily utilizing it to play with their dogs, take daily walks, and play a game of soccer with their friends," she explained. "If we are using it this much, I can only imagine how much it would be used if it was improved."

TOPEKA – The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE), in conjunction with the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism (KDWPT), continues to maintain a public health warning for Marion County Lake due to blue-green algae.

When a warning is issued, KDHE recommends the following precautions be taken:

●Lake water is not safe to drink for pets or livestock.

●Lake water, regardless of blue-green algae status, should never be consumed by humans.

●Fish may be eaten if they are rinsed with clean water and only the fillet portion is consumed, while all other parts are discarded.

●If lake water contacts skin, wash with clean water as soon as possible.

 ●Avoid areas of visible algae accumulation.

KDHE investigates publicly-accessible bodies of water for blue-green algae when the agency receives reports of potential algae blooms in Kansas lakes. Based on credible field observation and sampling results, KDHE reports on potentially harmful conditions.

Kansans should be aware that blooms are unpredictable. They can develop rapidly and may float around the lake, requiring visitors to exercise their best judgment. If there is scum, a paint-like surface or the water is bright green, avoid contact and keep pets away. These are indications that a harmful bloom may be present. Pet owners should be aware that animals that swim in or drink water affected by a harmful algal bloom or eat dried algae along the shore may become seriously ill or die.

A cluster of storms may develop during the predawn hours on Friday, but it appears that, as of now, the strongest of the storms will be to our southwest. 

Some of these storms may be capable of producing half dollar sized hail during the morning hours on Friday, according to the National Weather Service in Wichita.

Beginning today, the following recommendations are in place.

●No gathering limit when all persons wear masks

●Practice 6-foot distancing where possible

●If all persons in a gathering have been fully vaccinated for at least 2 weeks, masks and distancing may not be necessary

●Entities and businesses may continue to be more stringent in both private and public situations at their discretion

The health department developed the new guidelines after assessing vaccination rates and new case trends in McPherson County.

Currently, McPherson County is vaccinating anyone 16 years of age or older for COVID-19. The health department provided the following information concerning vaccinations in the county.

●As of May 5, 2021, according to the Kansas Immunization Registry, KSWebIZ, 14,757 doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered to McPherson County residents. The majority of doses administered have been Moderna (10,413), followed by Pfizer (3,798) and Johnson and Johnson/Janssen (546).
